Festival hits record The annual LUX festival of lights in Wellington attracted a record number of visitors. More than 50,000 checked out some of the displays throughout the city.

PHOTOS: Sam Duff Six students from Lyall Bay School, which has run radio station Maranui FM for five years, have negotiated with Ryman Healthcare to air a special Rita Angus hour twice a week. The youngsters will interview residents, play a few tunes and air news items in the timeslot on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Deputy Principal Clint Chalmers says the deal is a fantastic opportunity for the school. “We jumped at the chance,” he says. “It’s just amazing.” “It’s a great learning experience for the students.” RADIO STARS:Elisabeth Matsis, Oliver Brow and Asha Pulepule Clint says the year five and test out their vocal skills. six kids worked hard and were
eager to get to school each day to work on the project. “They have done everything from advertising to business plans.” Margot Boock, from Rita Angus Retirement Village, says the 230 residents enjoy staying involved in the local community and like tuning into Maranui FM. “It’s good for them to be part of the younger community,” Margot says. “It’s something we strive for.” “The residents wanted to know all about it and how there’s a radio station at a school. “They didn’t have radio stations at school when they went.” David King from Ryman Healthcare says the students negotiated hard to get a good deal and really had to fight for it. “They were great,” he says. “They were very professional.”
Jefferson fronts for yellow trucks

Youngster Jefferson Mann is the new famous face on the block. The Lyall Bay School pupil is this year’s poster boy for the annual Wellington Free Ambulance street appeal. Leaky home crisis continues Ten years after the government instituted remedies for people with leaky homes, people are still living in leaking homes. Homeowners L + J received a payout from WHRS but that barely covered legal fees. Homeowner LD has been accepted for repairs under the FAP system but has been waiting 11 months for the paperwork to be accepted. Architect Bruce Welsh says "the process is not focused on repairing houses and getting people back to a normal life. We need a better system and leadership."

Dianne Livingston, from WFA, says she is grateful for Jefferson’s help. “We think Jefferson is a real star,” she says. “We need to raise money every year to keep our service free for people like Jefferson, so we’re thrilled to have [his] help.”

Wellington Free Ambulance is the only free ambulance service in New Zealand and relies on donations from the public for funding. Jefferson will ride in an ambulance at the front of the WFA parade this Friday, which will mark the beginning of the annual street appeal.
