By Sam Duff A search has been launched for the oldest bible in Hataitai and Kilbirnie.

Reverend Simon Winn from All Saints’ Church in Hataitai says he wanted to find an interesting way of celebrating New Zealand Bible Month in July.

“I thought; let’s find the oldest bible or the bible with the most interesting story in our community,” he says.

“Maybe it’s written in a different language, maybe it was taken to war or maybe it was given to you by a special person.”

Reverend Winn says it is 200 years since the Christian faith was introduced to New Zealand when missionary Samuel Marsden landed in the Bay of Islands.

“As a parish we’re doing a series of Sunday services that focus on the journey of the Anglican faith in New Zealand,” he says.

“What we’re inviting people to do is to bring the bible and share its story with those who are here.”

Reverend Winn’s oldest personal bible dates back to 1966 when he was baptised as a child.

All Saints’ Church was built in 1894 and he is hoping to see a bible of a similar age.

“We would like to make sure everyone is talking to come up with the best solution for our community,” she says.

rima Street becomes a one way street then traffic will gridlock nearby streets such as Hamilton Road and Moxham Avenue.

Kilbirnie School principal Mike McGimpsey says NZTA have not given any thought to the traffic impact on Hamilton Road, where the school is located.

Another concern is a potential increase in the number of lanes on Wellington Road and

how children would safely cross, Montgomerie says.

“We often have class groups going to the facilities in Kilbirnie.

“It’s difficult to get a class of 30 kids across there at the moment and it’s only four lanes.”

An over-bridge from Kilbirnie to Hataitai could be an option, she says.

NZTA highways manager Rod James says the school’s concerns are being listened to.

“This project actually presents a real opportunity to make safety improvements on local roads through Hataitai, and we’ll be working closely with the school as we explore these possibilities,” he says.

“It is very early days and there will be plenty of time for the community to have a genuine input to these plans.”

He expects a public consultation process to begin towards the end of the year.

Children’s Commissioner Dr Russell Wills released new anti-bullying guidelines for schools at Wellington High last week.

He spoke about how organisations such as police, PPTA and NetSafe could join together to combat the problem.

A Newtown business is relocating to a new location for at least a year after a fire damaged their building last week.

Fire fighters were quick to the scene as they only had to cross the road from the station to the French Door Factory on Mansfield Street.

Owner Alan Chambers says the support he has received from the community has been overwhelming since the fire on June 23.

“I sent the insurance company a text and they had an assessor down here watching it burn down pretty quickly,” he says.

Alan, who has owned the company for three and a half years, says a Joiner in the Hutt had already offered him some space.

“You can take a positive note that nobody was hurt and we can come back from this.

“We have chosen to get on with it.”

Alan says the fire may have started from a pile of sawdust in the factory.

Several expensive pieces of machinery were damaged, he says.

Trolley buses voted out

NZ Bus says they are disappointed Wellington Regional Council has voted to remove trolley buses from the regions roads in 2017.

NZ Bus chief executive Zane Fulljames says time will tell if the Council has got the trolley bus decision right.

“We are strong advocates

of modernising Wellington's bus network to make it more efficient, reliable and accessible for everyone,” he says.

“While today's decision to terminate trolley bus services is disappointing, we will take some time to reflect on how this will impact on our business.

“What is most important now is that a clear and sensible transition plan is developed which provides certainty for all parties.”

Wellington Regional Council voted in favour of its regional public transport plan on Thursday which signed the death warrant for the iconic buses.

Newtown Protest Chinese spiritual group Falun Gong are protesting in Newtown.

Follower Margo MacVicar says the group want the editor of newspaper ‘Home Voice’ to apologise to the group for a letter published in the paper.

She says the group have been protesting for two weeks and will stay until an apology is given.

The protest group ranges from three to 15 weeks, MacVicar says.

Hanging up the stethoscope

By Sam Duff A Newtown doctor will spend more time pruning her roses after bowing out of practice last week.

Dr Indra Rajendran, a Miramar local, has been working at the Ora Toa health centre for nine years.

“I am going to miss my patients,” she says. “They’ve been a big part of my life.”

Indra, who trained in Sri Lanka, says the profession is very rewarding and she may do some locum work.

“It is lovely when somebody comes to me and tells me that I saved their life,” she says.

Indra has spent more than 40 years healing the sick after dreaming of becoming a doctor as a young girl.

“My dream became stronger

when I lost my younger sister when she was small,” she says.

“The doctors didn’t pick up on her illness and I wanted to do a better job.”

Letters and presents have overwhelmed Indra in her final few days at the practice.

“They bought tears to my eyes,” she says. “We do the job without expecting anything in return.”

Dr Indra’s husband was a fellow doctor until his death from pancreatic cancer six years ago.

She says her advice to budding doctors is to have compassion for the patients.

A move to Tawa, babysitting the grandchildren, time in the garden, and a spot of religious devotional singing are how Indra will enjoy her retirement.

Thick socks, shaving razors and deodorant are just a few of the things being dished out by the Wellington Night Shelter this winter.

The shelter has been donated 400 care packs by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hataitai.

Tania Torea from the Church says 40 young people from across the country had come to Wellington to put the packs together.

“There’s always a need because they rely on goodwill and donations,” she says.

Night Shelter manager Mike Leon says the packs will make a big difference for the shelter, which sees more than 20 new homeless a month come through its doors.

“Things such as good quality thick socks make a big difference,” he says.

“It makes them feel a bit more welcome if we’re able to give them a pack when they first get here.”

Leon says the homeless problem in Wellington has certainly grown since he started working at the Night Shelter 19 years ago.

“If we weren’t here it would be a lot more evident,” he says.

Wellington’s first mountain bike track for children has opened in Island Bay. The South Coast Kids Track is located opposite Wakefield Park, and the 500m off-road bike track caters for children as young as three.

Council project manager David Halliday says parents wanted a place where children could develop their cycling skills in a safe and fun environment.

“It will appeal to all ages, skills and bike types - even beginner parents.”

The bottom of the loop track is for beginners.The downhill run starts out through the trees for the more confident rider, and an uphill section provides the biggest challenge. David says the outside of the dirt berms will be covered with native plants in keeping with the south coast. One planting session has already been completed.

ChangeMakers Refugee Forum, who held a fun day at the Poneke clubrooms.

The event included music, video games, football matches and group dancing from Ethiopia, Colombia and Burma.

ChangeMakers is an organisation that helps refugees settle and participate fully in New Zealand life.

ChangeMakers General manager Thomas Banda says World Refugee Day is about honouring people who have been displaced from their homelands.

“It is a unique day of reflection for us in Wellington and we are trying to play a part in terms of recognising those in the community that have been affected by the displacement from their own homeland,” he says.

Dear Ed, Matariki at Tapu Te Ranga Marae in Island Bay was an impressive event! Welcoming young women took us on tours.

It was great to have the opportunity to look around those amazing wooden buildings. They have such unique 'organic' architecture.

How poignant to stand in that big meeting room where I remember David Lange giving an entertaining talk all those years ago. I enjoyed admiring again the reddish buffed floor and huge photos and portraits.

This is an iconic Island Bay place that we are fortunate to have.

Dear Ed, Critics of the Island Bay Cycle Way who call it "a cycleway to nowhere" are ignoring what a key destination for recreation Wakefield Park has become.

Any cycleway in Island Bay simply has to go via Wakefield Park.

This fact also counters the argument that a master plan for the entire route needs to be in place first.

Does your leather suite look faded and worn like this?

It doesn't, and delaying Section one for this reason risks the entire project being bogged down in bureaucracy for years.

By connecting Shorland Park and Wakefield Park and enabling safe, easy cycling around Island Bay the cycleway is completely justified in itself.

Cycleway debate goes on Dear Ed, I’ve been listening at the Citizens’ Panel that is planning the cycleway through Berhampore and Newtown.

Speakers from Frocks on Bikes said that women want a route that is comfortable, convenient and connected.

That means avoiding hilly routes, separation from busy or fast traffic, and easy connections to destinations such as schools, shops, cafes and hospitals.

Other speakers favoured routes through the Town Belt.

A cycle skills instructor surveyed Berhampore School and reported that most kids have access to a bike but want more safe places to ride.

We’ve heard concerns about lack of consultation, but one presenter said that the 2013 council election was a clear mandate for building safe bike lanes. She said, “respect the process.”

Popular Wellington fun run Round the Bays has lost one of its biggest sponsors.

AMI has chosen not to renew its arrangement with Sport Wellington to sponsor the event.

Round the Bays is New Zealand’s third largest sport and recreation event with a record 14,172 participants taking part in this year’s race.

AMI general manager of customer delivery Kevin Hughes says the decision is not a reflection on the relationship between the insurance company and Sport Wellington.

“AMI is moving in a different direc-

tion with its sponsorship strategy,” he says.

Sport Wellington will continue to run the event, says chief executive Phil Gibbons.

“We are excited to see what the future holds for upcoming Round the Bays events,” he says.

Sport Wellington is looking for a new sponsor for the event, Gibbons says.

Round the Bays has been running in Wellington since 1978 and has been owned by Sport Wellington since 1999.

Housing Accord to provide 7000 homes A Housing Accord between the Government and the council has been proposed in order to help increase the supply of housing in Wellington.

Housing Minster Dr Nick Smith says the supply and affordability of housing in Wellington needs to rise.

“The Accord will give us access to fast-track planning and consenting tools that will bring more houses to the market more quickly,” he says.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says that Wellington needs more housing.

“Over the last few years we have been building fewer homes than we need in the city to meet forecast growth. The Accord is one tool to help the council deliver on our growth plans,” Ms WadeBrown says.

Under the proposed Wellington Housing Accord, the Government and council would work together to encourage a good supply of quality housing in the capital. It

sets a target of 7000 additional homes over the next five years.

The Accord is subject to formal approval and is due to be discussed publicly this Thursday at the Wellington City Council.

“Affordability is an issue.

Wellington’s housing market is rated as ‘severely unaffordable’

by Demographia with the median house price five and a half times the median income,” Ms WadeBrown says.

“Increasing the supply of good quality housing will give people choice and make sure homes are more accessible across a range of different price points, from apartments in the city to first homes in our suburbs. There will be something for everyone.

“Our commitment to housing in Wellington is important. From our Social Housing Upgrade Programme through to providing regulation, the Accord supports our plans for a diverse, healthy and prosperous Wellington,” Ms Wade-Brown says.

Erskine waits for decision

By Sam Duff Island Bay locals braved the weather and turned up in force last week to hear about the future of Erskine College.

About 150 people came to listen to groups involved, council, and the owner of the land and buildings, Ian Cassells.

Councillor Paul Eagle chaired the meeting while Councillor Nicola Young recalled memories from at-

tending the school.

Residents raised concerns about the quality of housing that would be built on spare land, increased traffic in the area, and whether Avon Street would be widened.

The crowd came to life with a standing ovation when it was decided that working together was the best way forward.

Mr Eagle says the meeting was a great triumph and more progress had been made than

since the school closed.

“People are 100 percent committed to saving the chapel and people are also 100 percent committed to saving as much of the convent school as possible.”

Another proposal put forth at the meeting was a possible Southern Bays Historical Society museum on the site.

A community open day may be held at the college to show locals the condition of the buildings, Mr Eagle says.

Council housing tenants recall memories

MEMORIES: Local council housing tenants have shared their tears and fears in a documentary to screen at Colonial Cottage Museum.

A new documentary will showcase a number of local council housing tenants sharing their personal stories.

From Grandma’s nipple being caught in a mangle to cultural songs, My Memories of Home will showcase memories of tenants aged 65 and over.

Participants have recalled childhood tales with a focus on family and domestic life in the area for the documentary which will play in the Colonial Cottage Museum visitor centre.

The exhibit is a collaboration between Voice Arts Trust, Wellington City Council’s City Housing and the

Wellington Museums Trust.

Colonial Cottage deputy director Paul Thompson says he is excited to see how the Colonial Cottage story and environment inspires storytelling within the community.

The Cottage has been the starting point for inspiration, with the participants asked to ref lect on and share histories, experiences, cult u r a l i d e n t it i e s , i d e a s a nd b el iefs, Pau l says.

Participant Norrie Power says he has started to remember tales from his younger days by taking part in the project.

The documentary will play in the Cottage’s Visitors Centre from Wednesday July 9.

The sleek Cascada convertible will come to Australia and New Zealand for the first time, joined by the Astra GTC and VXR three-door hatches and the sophisticated Insignia VXR performance sedan.

Liam gives back to club

By Sam Duff A local school boy that won a sports scholarship is giving the money to his local cricket club to replace gear lost in a fire.

Liam Delaney, 8, is a keen cricket player and recently won a $250 Lance Williams scholarship.

The Lyall Bay School student won after writing a letter saying he wanted to give the money to the Eastern Suburb’s Cricket Club, who lost all of their gear in the Kiwi Storage fire.

Liam, who is in his first season with the Eastern Suburb’s Jackals, says he really enjoys playing cricket.

“I just really like the cricket club because they’re really good and I had a really good season with them,” he says.

“I would like to be a Black

Cap one day.”

Liam says his favour ite cricket player is Brandon McCullum.

Lance Williams from Leaders Kilbirnie says every time a member of his team sells a house he gives a $250 scholarship to a local child.

He says Liam’s letter stood out.

“Liam’s letter was not for himself but for the club,” Williams says.

Marty Brooky from the Eastern Suburb’s Cricket Club says the money will go towards replacing gear that was lost in the Kiwi Storage fi re earlier this year.

The club, which was uninsured, needs $30,000 to replace the gear destroyed in the fire and has so far fundraised a third of that.

Pulse get young netballers moving

By Josh Riddiford Cook Strait News Intern Players from the Central Pulse have been out and about in the community encouraging school children to play Netball.

Newtown school students had plenty of questions and enjoyed a session with players Paula Griffin and Donna Wilkins when they visited the school last week.

They wanted to spread the word that netball is a good way of keeping fit, healthy and active.

Budding Pulse player Sabitra Pradhan, 9, has only been playing for a month but was recently player of the day for her Newtown Takapo team.

She says she learnt a lot from the session.

“I learned that if you encourage each other you get the netball around really

fast,” Sabitra says.

Sabitra knew what she liked most about the game.

“I like when it’s fast and I like running and I like shooting goals.”

Almost 30 students took part in the Newtown session, which involved developing the basic skills of catching and passing, when the Cook Strait News caught up with them.

Wilkins says she had to adapt to her new role as

a living goal post for the kids.

Griffin says it is cool to get into the community and for Pulse players the programme is about remembering to be a role model.

Schools are being very welcoming, she says.

Griffin says the coaching sessions are an opportunity for the Wellington community to know the Pulse is behind them.

A big feed of fish and chips and a lie down was in order for the winner of the Wellington Marathon after crossing the finishing line.

Auckland Accountant Matt Harris beat off 404 other runners in the main event, the Armstrong Motor Group Marathon on June 22.

“I sort of felt alright for the first 15 kilometres,” he says. “My body was going through a bit of a rollercoaster ride.”

“I had a lie down for a while after I finished.”

Harris says he has taken part in two half marathons previously but the Wellington Marathon was his first national title.

His winning time was 2 hours 37 minutes, while the average for the race was 4 hours 5 mins.

The day was made up of six separate races, including the Classic Hits Kids Magic Mile.

Event organiser Michael Jacques says there were 4,992 entrants throughout the six races.

“The day was a great success,” he says.

“It’s always a great atmosphere.”

“The entries were really strong. We got a lot of post-race emails saying how great it was.”

Jacques says the marathon allows people to achieve things they would not otherwise achieve He says next year will be the 30th anniversary of the event, which is organised by the Wellington Marathon Clinic.

“It’s pretty positive for Wellington,” he says.
