Donation to keep the fire burning CLOE WILLETTS A young Kapiti entrepreneur is giving back to the community this winter with a gift that will warm the home of a deserving family. James Davis, 24, who owns Waikanae’s recently-opened Kapiti Organic Landscape Supplies, is giving away a winter’s supply of mac, pine and gum firewood, worth $340. Mr Davis, who works on-site at the Parata St premises, also home to his Kapiti Signs business, said Kapiti Organic Landscape Supplies has seen steady progress since its launch into the local agricultural market in December last year, thanks to Kapiti’s ‘‘dedication to healthy living.

‘‘We supply 100 per cent organic earth and firewood products, and it has taken off quite well because people generally prefer to use unprocessed products in their homes,’’ he said. ‘‘Not all families can afford to purchase firewood though, let alone quality longburning and quick heating types, which is why we want to help a family that really needs it.’’ ■ The community can nominate a deserving family by emailing supplies@kapitiorganiclandscape.co.nz Mr Davis said entries will close May 30 and the firewood will be dropped off to the chosen family on May 31.

Council has decided the controversial tui sculpture, taken down from its Paraparaumu Beach site in 2012, will be sold through an appropriate public sales process. The steel sculpture attracted adverse publicity when it was discovered the man who built it, Paekakariki artist Brendan Nolan, was a sex offender. Council also resolved that all funds from the sale of the sculpture be used towards funding a replacement artwork located at a suitable site at Paraparaumu Beach and that this should be done in consultation with the Paraparaumu Raumati Community Board. The fate of a second council-owned Nolan work, a portrait of Paekakariki writer and academic Jackie Sturm, will be decided once the Sturm family has been consulted.

TUI TO BE SOLD

Council has remodelled the ramps on a new raised pedestrian crossing by Paraparaumu Primary School so the incline is less steep. This has reduced the impact on cars going over the crossing, but is still enough to reduce the speed of cars driving by the school. The new crossing was put in because there was an ongoing problem with cars driving too fast down Ruapehu St where the school is located. ‘‘We’ve had great feedback from the school and parents about how pleased they are with the new crossing and the fact it’s making the road by the school much safer,’’ council school travel planner Brent Cherry said.

RANGE OF VIEWS

A total of 745 people have made a submission on a range of topics in this year’s Draft Annual Plan. The plan details council services, planned activities and investments and aims to reflect the community’s wishes as much as possible. A total of 627 submissions were received on fluoride alone. Of these, 366 were in favour and 261 against fluoride being added to the district’s water supply. Submission hearing days from May 20-22 will give the 104 people who have asked to speak about their submissions an opportunity to do so.

BURGLARIES

Three burglaries took place in commercial buildings in the early hours of Tuesday, May 6. One at the Garden Deli cafe on Raumati Rd, entry attempted at Diana’s Lotto shop on Maclean St and entry gained to Xpress Net on Maclean St, Paraparaumu Beach.
