Service club to make a comeback Continued from page 1 One of the main reasons for the reformation of an RSA in Wainuiomata is so Anzac Day and civic services can be led by club members, rather than by council representatives. A fear that the new club would end up like the old one was a concern of many that attended the meeting, and local Makere Jordan-Kaa says members of the public do not want old committee members involved. The old Wainuiomata RSA went into liquidation last year after those involved were warned it could face ongoing debts. Even though it formally had a membership of about 700, only 50 to 60 were regularly turning up. Stephen Hyde was nominated for the secretary position at

Tuesday’s meeting, with Tony Odell and Jane Chamberlain voted for as new committee members. Mr Bartlett was selected to become the chairman as well. Memberships and club fees were also a concern. Mr Bartlett says the next step would involve deciding which way to go, talking with the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association chief executive David Moger to find out what the best option would be. “It’s great to see the public excited to have an RSA come back to the community,” Mr Moger says. “Each one is a local entity and can customise themselves in their own way. We’re in the process of helping them towards re-establishing a club...

We’re supporting them find a way forward,” he says. Over the next few months,

an RSA club could be granted back to the Wainuiomata community, otherwise members would face becoming part of a club in the Hutt Valley as a sub-branch. At this stage, Mr Bartlett is confident a club will be formed and return incorporated with the Wainuiomata Bowling Club, using its premises as a meeting place. “You can’t compare Wainuiomata to other clubs around Wellington. We need our own club and that’s what the public wants,” Mr Bartlett says. “There’s a bit of work to be done but, we have achieved what we wanted to achieve,” Mr Bartlett says.
