Gardeners’ gala ANN READING Kapiti In Bloom is the theme for this year’s annual Kapiti Horticultural Society flower show. The show is being held on Saturday October 19 at the school hall at Kapiti Primary School, Rimu Rd, opposite Coastlands, and Kapiti Mayor Jenny Rowan will perform the official opening at 11am. There will be something for everyone, from a continuous running barbecue to sales tables of plants grown by society members. Local schools Kapiti Primary School, Paraparaumu Beach School and Te Ra School are participating this year with art displays and other garden ideas on which they are working.
There will also be trade stalls with items of interest to gardeners young and old. A hydroponic display will be set up and a small hydroponic unit will be given away on the day to one lucky customer. The Society’s ladies’ floral group will be staging a large display of floral art and also decorating the hall for the event. Throughout the day there will be demonstrations of how to pot up a hanging basket, how to divide an orchid and how to get the best out of your vegetable garden. There will be plenty of raffles of plants and goodies to be won and the society is looking forward to a large crowd attending to find out about what’s new and interesting in gardening in Kapiti.
Three members from the Probus Club of Kapiti Coast will be attending the Probus Rendezvous at Albury and Wodonga, Australia, in October. The trio include past president Pam Ward, president Gillian Graham and vice president Richard Chilton. The Probus Rendezvous is a networking opportunity among various Probus club members as well as various activities. ‘‘We don’t think many from New Zealand will be going there,’’ Mr Chilton said. ‘‘It’s like a conference but it’s quite social,’’ Ms Graham added. ‘‘Last year it was held in Palmerston North.’’ It’s a busy time for the Probus Club of Kapiti Coast, which is the first Probus club established in the Southern Hemisphere. Next year in November is the club’s 40th anniversary. ‘‘We’re planning a celebration,’’ Mr Chilton said. Looking ahead, the club would like Probus Rendezvous to be held in Kapiti in their 50th year. ‘‘It’s something we would be looking for,’’ he said. Having a Probus Rendezvous in Kapiti could be drawcard for many people especially as the district has 12 Probus clubs between Otaki and Raumati comprising about 2000 members. Probus clubs, which are offshoots of Rotary clubs, are

Probus originated in the United Kingdom via two community based social clubs in the 1960s and is now a worldwide movement in 23 countries. The Probus Club of Kapiti Coast was founded towards the end of 1974 on the initiative of Paraparaumu businessman and Rotarian, Gordon Roatz, club history

Mr Roatz found out about Probus clubs while visiting two of his wife’s cousins in Scotland. ‘‘It occurred to Gordon that the idea was worth introducing to the growing number of retired residents in Kapiti. ‘‘He returned and secured his Rotary club’s authority to initiate moves to found a Probus club in this district.’’ An initial meeting was held in the Kapiti Boating Club on Tuesday November 5, 1974.
