Wadestown Library's Community coordinator Louise Davies pours a cup of tea, in preparation for the Library's Russian Tea Party taking place next Thursday, May 30 at 2pm. The special Russian Tea Party will be hosted by local librarian Marina Babitcheva, from Russia, who will serve Russian tea from a Samovar and talk about the important aspect of Russian culture. Marina came out to New Zealand from Russia with her husband in the mid-nineties. She is looking forward to demonstrating a key aspect of Russian daily life which is tea drinking and introducing the experience to locals. This is a collaborative event between City Communities and library staff who, as a result of the recent restructure, now work in the same business unit and are enjoying working together on library based events. For more information call Louise on 499-1825 or email Louise. Davies@wcc.govt.nz.

Wellington New World launches charity Last Week Wellington City New World launched the Gillies McIndoe Research Charity fund. The charity was established to aid the work of a team led by Professor Swee Tan, of Khandallah, at the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute. P resent was fou r-yea r- old Heather Ward, from Hataitai, who unveiled a sign showing before and after shots of herself as a baby. Heather underwent treatment as a baby to remove a strawberry birthmark on her nose Strawberry birthmarks are a
vascular tumor that begins to appear after birth, and Professor Tan and his team have been working on a treatment that removes these birthmarks. Heather was one of the first to undergo treatment as part of an experimental research programme. The treatment prevented Heather from having to undergo countless operations, high dose steroids, and even chemotherapy. As a result of a propranolol treatment, Heather’s birthmark had disappeared after eight months. Heather’s mother Karen Ward
says her family feels forever indebted to Professor Tan for his incredible work. “We feel very indebted to Professor Tan. He saved her from countless operations and much nastiness. It is pioneering and the treatment really does work.” Wellington City New World has made a financial commitment to support the work of the Gillies McIndoe Research Charity, and will be encouraging the public to support the cause by contributing to the charity fund over the next three years.
