Farm deal sealed David Haxton

An end of an era looms in Paekakariki. After lengthy negotiations, the wellknown Perkins family farm in Paekakariki has been sold to the Transport Agency. The farm will be swallowed up by the proposed Transmission Gully motorway. The 400-hectare farm sits in the way of the northern end of the gully route. The sale of the farm has taken years to finalise, initially the Transport Agency only wanted a slice of the farm but the Perkins’ held firm telling the agency

it had to be the whole farm or nothing. Once the agency agreed to buy the whole farm, the issue came down to price. A deal has now been struck by the Perkins family and the government road builder. ‘‘They’ve paid us a deposit,’’ John Perkins said. The agency has given the Perkins family, which includes three generations living on the farm, some breathing space to get the farm in order as well as find another farm to buy. ‘‘We’ve got until about November next year. ‘‘We’ve been looking for another farm but haven’t

found a suitable one yet. ‘‘We’ve been up to the Hawke’s Bay and back down to here looking. ‘‘We’ll never find another one like this one though.’’ He’s not looking forward to leaving the farm. ‘‘It will be a huge wrench. ‘‘It’s going to be sad to move from Paekak. ‘‘My first job was on this coast after leaving college.’’ The farm dates back about 170 years — the Smith family were the first owners. By 1970 John and Betty Perkins took over the farm after his uncle died.

IN BRIEF INDECENT BEHAVIOUR

Police have charged a 38-year-old Picton man with indecent assault after he allegedly interfered with a 16-year-old girl on an Intercity bus. The man sat next to the unaccompanied girl and made small talk before touching her inappropriately. She told him to go away but he repeated the action. A male passenger got into a scuffle with the man, which continued when the bus stopped at Waikanae. The offender received a cut to the back of his head. The Picton man was to appear in the Porirua District Court yesterday.

ARRESTS

CHALLENGE: Paraparaumu College champion debaters, from front left, Callum Brazier, Hannah Tomlinson and Victoria Bell. The trio beat Kapiti College students, pictured from back left, Jean Allan, Sassy Shepheard, Tara Doak, to claim this year’s inter-college debating title. The debate was whether beauty is more useful than brains. Kapiti College choose the affirmative position, Paraparaumu College the negative. The Combined Probus Club of Waikanae debate, held at the Waikanae Senior Citizens Clubrooms on Tuesday August 14, saw Paraparaumu College score 90 points and Kapiti College 70 points. Victoria Bell, from Paraparaumu College was judged best speaker. It was the 13th year both Photo: CCN170812SPLdebate colleges have contested the debating title.

Kapiti police investigating the death of Izak Millanta, 17, have made a number of unrelated arrests in connection to other alleged assaults which occurred on the same night. Izak was found by police unconscious at the back of KFC in the Coastlands carpark around 3am on Saturday August 11. He died in Wellington Hospital the following day. As a result of inquiries into Izak’s death, police became aware of other alleged incidents in the carpark of the Kapiti Lights complex and surrounding area on Friday night and into Saturday morning. Four males aged between 19 and 26 years have been arrested and dealt with on charges of assault, fighting in a public place and injuring with intent to injure. One appeared in the Porirua District Court yesterday and the remaining three were dealt with by pre charge warning.

VANDALS STRIKE

Waikanae School was vandalised on Wednesday including broken glass bottles, new scooter racks wrenched from concrete and a heavy concrete block from a construction area thrown at the PE shed. ‘‘It is very disappointing to see a community place like our school being damaged,’’ teacher Peter Corlett said. ‘‘It is particularly upsetting for our children who can’t understand why people would do this and who would treat their school in this way.’’ There have been on-going incidents of vandalism at the school over the years including graffiti, broken windows in the hall, forced entry into the PE shed and caretaker’s shed, youths running on the building roofs, rubbish bins in the playground and attached to buildings set on fire, and in one instance, faeces smeared on the windows and door handles of the office block.

Rob’s a real survivor ■

David Haxton

suggested he should stay put and wait for help. And there was another thing to consider: ‘‘If I didn’t make it I would die.’’ Moreover, within about 45 minutes he saw the Westpac Rescue helicopter and felt rescue wasn’t far away. Hewitt regretted not having a safety sausage with him — a safety sausage is a brightly coloured self inflating surface marker buoy. ‘‘I thought I was a big Navy diver and didn’t need one.’’ Thus began a journey that would see him in the water for 75 hours drifting in currents between Mana and Kapiti Islands. As the hours passed by, his body started breaking down physically, he started hallucinating, he ate the four kina and a crayfish in his grabbag, he has some short sleeps, and he had a lot of time to think. Into his fourth day in the water, and in a state of depression, he decided it was time to die. He removed his wetsuit and hood, and the cold ocean started draining his body heat. ‘‘I was just waiting to die.’’ But suddenly he heard a humming noise and smelt some boat fuel. Then he looked up and saw two of his Navy mates staring at him. ‘‘Kia ora bro, what are you fellas doing here?’’ he said. Being embraced by whanau and friends was very special. ‘You don’t realise important you are, until you realise how important you are to other people.’’ Hewitt also told the students to back their initial reaction. ‘‘Your gut instinct is usually the right instinct.’’

Many students throughout Kapiti have been listening to Rob Hewitt talk about his remarkable real life sea survival story. Hewitt has been visiting schools this week as part of a initiative by the Kapiti Kids Motivation Trust. In February 2006, Hewitt spent 75 hours lost in the water between Mana and Kapiti Islands after a diving adventure went wrong. At Paraparaumu College on Monday, Hewitt recounted aspects of his survival. Hewitt and a group of other divers had been diving near Mana Island for crayfish and kina. When Hewitt’s dive buddy didn’t go down for their second dive, Hewitt decided he would go alone. His reason to go alone, and break a diving golden rule, were twofold — he couldn’t go home without any crayfish, and he’d get a ribbing from dive mates if he didn’t catch anything. ‘‘You start making mistakes when ego jumps in.’’ On his second dive he started filling his grab-bag with seafood but as he dived deeper to get his second crayfish a strong current propelled him about 600 to 800 metres in about 15 to 20 seconds, he estimates. ‘‘It was like being in a hydroslide.’’ When he surfaced he was a long way behind the dive boat. ‘‘I could see the boat but couldn’t understand why they couldn’t see me.’’ He thought about removing some of his heavy dive gear and swimming to Plimmerton Point but wasn’t sure he could make it, besides his Navy dive training

It provided a good location for the kids growing up, the beach was nearby, and the farm provided a steady income — at one stage Mr Perkins had 2400 ewes on the farm. ‘‘We’ve probably spent more than we’ve earned,’’ he chuckled. Things haven’t always been smooth though. There has been family heartache — of their six children, three have died including their eldest Jane, and

Mr Perkins, a salt-of-the-earth type character, has memories of the farm dating back to World War II. As a child he remembers sitting on the homestead’s porch, with a tin hat on, watching US Marines firing guns out to sea. ‘‘It was like Guy Fawkes’ night.’’ Over the years the farm has given a lot of pleasure.

Betty’s health hasn’t been good recently which has meant hospital care. The farm also took a hit on October 3, 2003, when a weather bomb struck Paekakariki. ‘‘We didn’t come out of that well — all the weather seemed to dump here. ‘‘There were so many washouts. The farm never recovered.’’ And John bristles at rates increases — rates have gone from $600 to over $7000 a year.

Arrive at September’s Daffodil Carnival by steam train, the Daffodil Express. Bookings are limited for the Sunday, September 9 trip between Wellington and Carterton and return. See steaminc.org.nz. Adult return fare $75. To book, phone 0800 783264 or email bookings@steaminc.org.nz.

Over the years, John and Betty, who have been married for over 50 years, have also been very active in the Paekakariki community. ‘‘We toted it up and between us we were involved in 30 different organisations,’’ Mr Perkins said. ‘‘We’ve seen a lot come and go. We’re part of the history of the village. ‘‘It was a tight knit community but everything is changing.’’

Six steps to style

Step 4 — Reflect your personality

Just to recap from last week, we believe that if you follow the ‘‘six style steps’’ approach, you will stay on track with looking and feeling fabulous. Step 3 was wear the right colours. Once you feel confident with your best colours and styles of clothes, you want to also feel competent with pulling your whole look together and this is where you style personality comes into play. There is no point in wearing an outfit that ticks all the above boxes when you actually just don’t like the outfit or how it has been put together. Once you understand your own style personality, putting your outfit together will become second nature. Your personality will not only dictate which styles you prefer but also the type of fabrics, textures and patterns you are attracted to. If you take a haphazard approach to shopping you could end up with a muddle of different pieces that don’t mix and match well together. Your look may change as you progress through life but the first place to start is to look at your current wardrobe and identify the outfits that you love to wear, see if you can see the common style you are attracted to. Maybe you like anything feminine, floaty and romantic or perhaps you feel great in outfits with wow factor. You may prefer a classic style that is timeless and simple or maybe comfort is more important to you. Wear outfits that make you feel wonderful. Next week Step 5 — Plan your wardrobe

Kapiti College’s principal Tony Kane and vice principal Andy Pook had to pay their dues to the college’s World Vision team on Thursday. Also stepping up to the mark with them was Ido Drent, who plays Daniel Potts of TV2’s Shortland Street fame. Mr Kane and Mr Pook appeared before the senior and junior assemblies attired as well-dressed women, while Mr Drent had come down from Auckland for the day. All this was in order to congratulate Kapiti College World Vision team for a really amazing 40 Hour Famine total of $22,018. Why the dress up? Katie Smith, the college’s famine director had assured Mr Kane that the college could double the previous year’s total of $9700 and the principal’s response was to offer to dress up if they made it. ‘‘I never thought they could possibly do it,’’ he said. Ido Drent has been the national leader of the ‘blue team’ for World Vision for three years. He was asked by the CEO of the organisation if he would agree to go to Kapiti College to congratulate them personally if they made their target. He too had doubted that he would be called upon. In an inspiring address to the students Mr Drent said: ‘‘I was blown out of the water — you just went nuts — all out. ‘‘You were one of very few schools who had made double the total of the previous year. ‘‘Some had gone from $1000 to $2000 but not on this scale.’’ He challenged them: ‘‘It doesn’t have to stop here, by your choice to do this you have been agents of change for the children of Mali and Niger.

PAY UP WITH A SMILE: Kapiti College principal Tony Kane, left, with vice principal Andy Pook, TV star Ido Drent and Photo: Ann Reading / CCN160812ARwldvsn Katie Smith. ‘‘Dare to dream greatly and do it with other things in life.’’ He said that poverty was not just the not having of things, it was not having any choice for what their life could be like. ‘‘The choice of you young people to get on board (the 40 hour famine) has been to give others in countries like East Timor, Mali and Niger a choice for life.’’ Mr Drent presented small prizes at both senior and junior assemblies to the three (non-team members) who had earned the most for World Vision, before the team went for a group chat with him over a pizza lunch. Mr Kane made everyone laugh and earned applause for saying that he had discovered two things about wearing the clothes he had on.

‘‘Stockings are cold, and there’s nowhere to put your cellphone.’’ However he had discovered a new use for the phone, putting actions to words he said: ‘‘It is useful for putting on lipstick — turn it onto camera and you can see what you are doing.’’ He congratulated Katie Smith and her team and said he was very proud of them. He also introduced Jo-Jo Gibbs who will be the college’s youth ambassador to World Vision for 2013. Mr Drent said it was very unusual for any college to have the continuity of having a youth ambassador two years in succession and therefore able to maintain the momentum of interest and involvement that this created.

He also told the team over lunch that a special scholarship had now been created for a student to attend a high-level World Vision conference in Auckland and that Kapiti College had been selected to sent a representative. * Junior prizewinning earners:- Michaela Stella (third — earned $210.30); Naomi Berger (second — $225); Sam Smith and Oscar Jackson team effort (First $664). * Seniors:- Lily Pryor Rodgers (third — $119.80); Joana Reid (second — $229.80) Sam Norris (first $200.33). * Raumati South School Amelia Gabby (third $221.80); Emily Wakelin (second — $229.80) Aidan Berger (first $250). Raumati Village Bakery donated $100 for the prizes.

Option evening for students, families An option information evening at Paraparaumu College attracted more than 200 families. ‘‘The event was designed to help students make the right subject choice for 2013 and beyond,’’ Paraparaumu College assistant principal Andrea Stonehouse said. ‘‘There were no formal presentations, just opportunities to ask questions and find information. ‘‘It is hoped that this

presentation would encourage students to focus their efforts and aim high in their exams and assessments.’’ College teachers from more than 35 subjects were available, deans and careers advisers were available, and also representatives from Victoria University, Otago University, Massey University, Auckland University, Defence Careers, Whitireia NZ, WelTec, NZ Fashion Tech, Taratahi

Agricultural Training Centre, NZ Institute of Sport. ‘‘This is the first time the college has held this event, and parents and staff alike commented on how valuable and informative it was,’’ Andrea said. ‘‘There was a real buzz about the evening and many parents commented that not only did it give their children a more specific direction in their education but it also gave the parents a more

Panel seeks your views

The Wellington region local government review panel wants feedback from Kapiti residents. Three of the four panel members, Sir Geoffrey Palmer, Sir Wira Gardiner and Bryan Jackson will front a public meeting in the Paraparaumu Library on Thursday, August 30 from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. The panel is expected to announce a recommended option in late October for potential local government reform in the Wellington region. ‘‘This panel has no vested interest in any outcome other than one that advances the interests of the people who live here,’’ Sir Geoffrey said in a statement. ‘‘We want as much public feedback as possible. ‘‘The panel wants to discuss issues that span across the Wellington region — these are issues such as transport, flood protection, water quality and regional planning. ‘‘We released an issues paper in July outlining the key issues and needs of ratepayers and residents in the greater Wellington region, and this public meeting is one of the ways Kapiti residents can respond to those issues and have their say. ‘‘As a region we have some big

issues to consider. The pronounced economic decline in the Wellington region has continued with serious social and economic implications. ‘‘Demographic changes mean councils will need to increase their focus on the needs and services of an ageing population.’’ Sir Geoffrey said councils are also under considerable pressure to deliver services to the community more efficiently while at the same time improving quality. ‘‘We need to find solutions that address the needs of local communities and how they interact regionally. ‘‘There is no doubt there is a strong sense of community in this region, but we are also one of the most highly mobile and diverse populations in the country. ‘‘Each day, over 53,000 people travel to other parts of the region for work, and a large number of residents have a second home in another territorial authority area. ‘‘Residents are encouraged to make a submission to the panel with their thoughts on the future of local governance in the Wellington region.’’ The ways to do so are outlined at www.wellingtonreviewpanel.org.nz.

Late run not a winner it at a racetrack before,’’ Balcolmbe added. ‘‘He ran along the outside of the course as the horses charged to the winning post. He even crossed the line himself. ‘‘The guy had been drinking but he wasn’t completely legless. He is a bloody idiot.’’ The groom-to-be — believed to be in his late 20s — has been banned from the course. Shocked people at the track took to Facebook to share what they had just witnessed. Kate Goodrich posted: ‘‘Did anyone just see that race at Otaki?? See the idiot on the track faceplant on the line!’’ The race wasn’t disrupted and was won by Derby Dan.

Battle for the Tararuas

THRIVING: The Department of Conservation says some species of bird in the Tararuas, such as kakariki, pictured, Photo: CCN150812SPLbird are thriving since a 1080 poison drop.

1080 credited for increased bird life A 1080 poison drop in the Tararuas has led to a drop in pest numbers and an increase in some bird populations, the Department of Conservation says. The aerial 1080 pest control operation drop took place in late 2010 as part of Project Kaka. Although still early days, Dr James Griffiths of DOC said signs for some bird species were promising. ‘‘Counts have shown that rifleman, whitehead and kakariki have all increased following the operation, compared to the non-treatment area where no 1080 was applied.

‘‘A decrease in possum and rat numbers, which have stayed at low levels for the two years following the operation, is also encouraging. ‘‘Stoat numbers are also tracking at low levels, but we haven’t detected a significant change as they were at low levels prior to the operation. ‘‘If stoat numbers had been high prior to the operation we would have expected to see a significant drop now.’’ Project Kaka is a 10-year DOC programme aimed at restoring the health of a 22,000 hectare belt of the Tararua Forest Park stretching from Otaki Forks to

Holdsworth in the Wairarapa. ‘‘As we collect more data over the 10-year term of the project, the effect of 1080 on forest birds and pest animals in the Tararua Forest Park will become clearer,’’ Dr Griffiths said. ‘‘We may also start to see positive changes in the bird counts for slower breeding species such as kaka.’’ Rat, possum and stoat numbers will be controlled every three years in the Project Kaka zone through the aerial application of 1080, with the next operation scheduled for spring 2013.

The Upper Hutt man — who was decked out in a minidress and a blonde wig — was collared by security staff and ejected from the course. ‘‘What he did was crazy,’’ Otaki-Maori Racing Club racing boss Darin Balcombe said. ‘‘If the horses had been running wide as they sometimes do during the winter, he could easily have been killed.’’ The incident happened in the closing stages of race 3 at 1.40pm on Saturday. ‘‘I’ve never seen anything like

Kapiti residents have their say

Congratulations Kapiti! More than 681 submissions have been lodged with the Environmental Protection Authority on the Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway proposal. I have long believed our district is the ‘‘Submissions Capital’’ of New Zealand and you have not proved me wrong! From what I understand the community is almost evenly divided for and against the proposal, so it’s good to see people who want to speak out having the courage of their convictions and having their say. Given the number of submissions lodged and the number of parties requesting to be heard, this promises to be a lengthy and hotly contested process. You can look at the council submission on www.kapiticoast.govt.nz if you’re interested in our say. On another completely un-related topic, many of you will know that council recently discontinued its contract with Nature Coast and as part of this process we have developed a new Economic Development strategy. Clearly the winds of change are blowing locally, nationally and internationally. Key impacts for the district will come from the state of the economy, the proposed new Expressway and the Government’s desire for major reform in local government, particularly in our region. Whatever happens, we all need to work together to create the kind of economic development that will re-fire the region and create jobs. Council has shaped the new strategy to support this process. Note that the

Kapiti News

key word is ‘‘support’’. We are clear that our role is to set the direction for the waka, support the journey and make sure it gets to the right destination. Strategically, we want to see more good quality local jobs in the district that will make Kapiti a great place to ‘‘live, work and play’’. We also want to lay the foundations for a healthy and vibrant economy for the first half of the 21st century. To do this we need to build good partnerships with the business community, tangata whenua and a range of local, regional and national organisations. In the new scheme of things, we have established two new external contracts; one responsible for running our i-SITES and working with a range of tourism operators to derive economic benefit for the region, and another to provide a range of business services for the community. In addition we have brought the remaining budget back into the council so we can work on economic priority areas such as clean technology and food production. I will be talking about these issues at the next Kapiti Electra Business Breakfast at Southwards on September 5. Look forward to seeing you there.

Council lines in the sand Sometimes when I drop my son Ari at Kapiti College I take Kaizer, our German Shepherd, along. We park by the Raumati pools before crossing the Wharemauku bridge to head north. At low tide this a lovely expansive beach with Kapiti Island standing sentinel beyond. But when the tide is high and she’s blowing a storm, the waves hammer the land. These natural wounds are visible. Property owners along this stretch have responded to this erosion of their beach front properties in fascinating ways. These King Canute engineering attempts cover everything from walls of garden clippings tucked behind fencing wire, to one property with impressive threestaged concrete defensive walls. Railway steel tracks hammered into the sand, backed by a stockade of heavy driftwood, is a popular choice. These are probably British industrial steel from the empire days where the sun never sat. Kaizer, for some reason, likes to cock his leg against these corroding ferrous reminders. A passing walker, Lyall Perris, and I, strike a conversation about these King Canute attempts. ‘‘People who buy and enjoy these beachfront properties should also take the risks that go with it,’’ was his

view. For some properties that risk is as close as three to 10 meters from buildings. But risk management has never been solely an individual necessity. Local authorities have collective responsibilities. In the case of coastal hazards the responsibility has been imposed on them by central government. All local authorities now have to legally ‘‘give effect’’ to the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement 2010. A key part of the NZCPS is managing the expected effects of sea level rises anticipated over the next 100 years. It requires local authorities to give certainty to developers and communities about where subdivisions and development will be appropriate, where it needs special consideration and where it should not be allowed. Coastal property owners will be affected as local authorities manage these of projected sea-level rise. These will create zones where development activities may be restricted. These lines will go further inland and impose conditions and impact on properties which normally do not consider themselves to be ‘beachfront’.

While this is risk management over a long span of time involving big financial numbers. But, there is also immediacy. Because local authorities are legally required by central government to ‘‘give effect’’ to it, whatever any information secured by local authorities about the threat of sea level changes in their coastal areas has to be include in the Land Information Memorandum of every affected individual property. There are a whole range of issues to consider. The good thing is that the NZCPS is not a binding set of rules. The RMA process is one where issues are weighed against other matters. It is evidence based and contestable, and the whole process has to go through a public consultation process. Councils have to show that these lines in the sand are backed by robust methodology and evidence. Equally, those wanting to challenge the veracity of these projected lines will also have to back it with evidence. One useful bit of information is that over recent years Valuation New Zealand has noted that beachfront property values have continued to rise. But the rate of increase has not been as steep as before because the market has become more aware of the challenges posed by climate change.

Last Friday I hosted Health Minister Tony Ryall for a visit to Levin to see some great work being done by local health and social providers. We visited the Horowhenua Community Practice, based at the Horowhenua Health Centre, which now has around 8500 patients. It has had a challenging time in attracting GP recruits, but it is very pleasing to hear another four GPs are on their way which will help relieve the pressure. We also visited Life to the Max, which is a wrap-around service for at-risk young people who might otherwise slip through the cracks. This service is one of several ‘‘high trust’’ contracts signed around the country where the Government enables local groups to provide local solutions. Life to the Max now has two fulltime drug and alcohol counsellors, and has formed strong partnerships with other government departments and local community groups. Its activities have included a literacy programme and outdoors activities. Already this is making an impact. Fewer students are skipping class and making a nuisance of themselves in town, and Levin Police are starting to see a real

reduction in youth offending which is good news. This is a three-year trial which has allowed Life to the Max to be more flexible with its day to day decision making and funding decisions.

FROM MY DIARY

* Cabinet met on Monday and Parliament is sitting all week. * I’ve had a very busy two-day ministerial trip to Australia on Tuesday and Wednesday. I’ve been in Canberra and Sydney to meet with the Australian Minister of Immigration, the Minister of Veterans’ Affairs and the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. We’ve discussed issues facing both countries such as illegal migrants, logging and the 2015 Gallipoli commemorations in Turkey. * Thursday I am in Hamilton representing the Government at a water rights forum, along with the Prime Minister and other senior ministers. * Saturday I hope to watch HorowhenuaKapiti play Poverty Bay in Levin, in the opening round of the Heartland rugby competition. Good luck.

Training for the Real World The trend in fitness training around the world is to “functional fitness” - the programmes used every day at FIT CLUB, according to co-owner Kelly Hynson.

“It makes sense to train for the moves you are making every day in your work, in your sport and in daily life. We train for every day function and develop strength, power, agility, stability and flexibility that will benefit you outside of the gym walls”. “Some gym training tends to send people down a type of body building model. Functional fitness is really relevant to the life you live and your individual goal, whether it is sport fitness, weight loss or gym training for exercise and health” Kelly says functional fitness can trace its origins to physiotherapy and sports conditioning and is great for injury prevention and rehabilitation as well as building strength, working all the muscles and strengthening the body’s core. It is also the favoured sports conditioning model for training. “Because FIT CLUB is owned by a physiotherapy company, KCP Physiotherapy, and has a physio on-site, the principles of functional fitness are embodied in all FIT CLUB training. The Tongariro St gym has an impressive array of machines and Kelly says they have their uses within the programmes but they are only part of a wider training regime. “When people sign up to the gym they are given a complimentary ‘kick start’. We sit down and assess their goals and depending on their level of fitness, we take them through functional fitness exercises including kettle bells, free weights, resistance bands and chains – anything that will get a sweat up and get results. We also specialise in rehabilitation, injury prevention and programmes for the mature aged population, so if a gentle and cautious approach is what’s needed then that’s exactly what we’ll give our members” “We have a wide range of Les Mills Group Fitness programmes that are developed here in New Zealand and used around the world. These classes are designed to improve our function also.” Another area that we’re developing at FIT CLUB is CrossFit. We have three CrossFit certified instructors. CrossFit also falls into ‘functional fitness’ and is an international sport taking the world by storm and an exciting prospect for anyone looking for an exercise challenge.” CrossFit is

basically the sport of training and is defined as “constantly varied functional movement completed at high intensity” and is applicable to anyone that likes training. All routines can be scaled to suit attendees. We have a large area set aside just for CrossFit. One thing that makes this form of training so much fun is that your “workout of the day” is constantly changing so you never get bored! Fit Club and the Community. Fit Club trainers work with several sports teams on their offseason and pre-season conditioning. “We absolutely have a vision that sports people on the Kapiti Coast could be so much better. We’re not coaching – we’re supporting their fitness.” They are also the sole Gym Sports Card sponsors for both Kapiti and Paraparaumu colleges and for every student who signs up, a donation is made to the school.

The team. Owners Yurri and Kelly Hynson say their passion for sports training is driven by their own personal experiences. “Not only have we both had the privilege of playing sport at a national level, Yurri also competed internationally in Olympic Freestyle wrestling,” Kelly says. Yurri holds a Masters degree in Physiotherapy and is the director of KCP Physiotherapy. There are also two other qualified Sports Physiotherapists in the business. The instructors, Mat Brown, Alan Hynson, Isaac King, Alina Renner, Marcel Austmann, Alina Renner, Kelly Chapman and Aaron Kearney are highly qualified and committed to assisting their clients to reach their goals. On the Wednesdays in August, FIT CLUB is holding Open Days for all comers from 8am to 11 am and from 6pm in the evening with a live DJ

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

One-way option

Kapiti Island from above Maungakotukutuku Road.

Unfortunately, I have been overseas for the past three weeks and have only just perused the Wednesday, August 8 edition of the Kapiti News. Articles on pages 4 and 5 relate to the proposed expressway, one by the ‘‘Save Kapiti’’ group, which draws our attention to the heights above ground level involved for its ‘‘raised embankment’’ style of construction. These will range between 6.0 and 8.6 metres across its length; a frightening thought indeed. Mention is made of the ‘‘flat road design’’ of the proposed Western Link Road. The other opinion is from the Kapiti Chamber of Commerce, which favours the expressway with their eight-page submission to the Resource Management committee. They state that all arguments against the expressway offer no credible alternatives. My credible alternative is to build the Western Link Road but as a one-way road heading north, with access to the present road system as planned. The present State Highway 1 would become a one-way road heading south, with some upgrading maybe. I have noticed that the Paraparaumu Fire Brigade and the Southward Car Museum are concerned at lack of easy access to and from their premises if the expressway is built. The residents of the Kapiti region, and also our many visitors, would be much better served with the two roads but the main gain is the much reduced cost of implementation from billions down to a million plus. Perhaps such an idea has already been put forward and I

apologise if that is so but if it hasn’t, I await others’ comments with interest. ROY H FRISBY Waikanae

Offensive demand

I recently received a letter from IHC which contained a statement I thought was quite offensive. It said: ‘‘Without $50 from you by August 25, this workplace discrimination against intellectually handicapped people will continue.’’ The letter contains a petition form addressed to Paula Bennett and the usual type of donation form attached. I have been a regular donor [to IHC] for over 40 years. I am interested in hearing what others think including anyone who has received a similar letter. I do believe the IHC have a case but in the past I have never been asked for money when signing any petition. TREVOR BETTANY Raumati Beach

Water concern

It’s worrying to read Councillor Gurunathan’s recent column, where he warns us that water privatisation is indeed a real and looming threat, and suggests we must take steps to prevent it. Cr Gurunathan should be congratulated for raising this matter rather than accepting the blithe assurances of the Kapiti Coast District Council that the institution of water meters and userpays charging would not lead to privatisation, and that the council had arranged matters to make privatisation next to impossible. After 25 years of assorted govern-

ments pushing privatisation policies, the KCDC’s lack of concern seems hard to fathom. SAM BUCHANAN Kapiti Concerned Citizens (abridged)

Right to question

KCDC criticism of critic Dale Evans for asking nine questions about Council costs (Kapiti News, August 15) is absurd. As a ratepayer he is perfectly entitled to seek information about where our rates are being spent without being blamed for the cost involved.. The Council’s criticism that those questions cost $1863 reflecting a total of 27.5 hours and the involvement of no less than 18 staff is more a reflection on the bureaucratic way the Council chooses to engage with its own ratepayers. Let’s remember it was the Council which decided as a matter of policy to treat all requests for information as Official Information Act (OIA). Instead of just knocking out a basic reply it puts requests through a complex process in which it applies the letter of the law of the OIA. How silly! If the Council communicated effectively with ratepayers in the first place and built up a climate of trust, ratepayers wouldn’t need to ask so many questions. Instead, the signal the Council sends out is of an embattled local authority which is constantly on the defensive. Sadly, it’s ratepayers who once again have to pick up the extra costs of an over-the-top Council policy. CHRIS TURVER Te Horo

Set a summer you

Need to lose 5kg before summer arrives? Carrying extra weight can really make you feel self conscious and uncomfortable; along with the health risks of being overweight it can get you down mentally and make other areas of your life worse. I’ve put together my top tips to help you lose some excess kilos before summer. ■ Set a date — There are truckloads of reasons to not start your new weight loss routine: I have a wedding to go to, a big night out, work is stressful right now. Forget all of them and just make the change. The longer you put it off the less likely you are to actually start. ■ Tell your friends and family — You’re going to have days when you feel like giving up and going back to your old habits, especially in the early days of a new you. By informing those close to you of your intentions you can rely on them for support and motivation when you’re struggling. They can stop you reaching for the biscuit jar when you’re feeling sorry for yourself. ■ Keep a food and exercise diary — Numerous studies show people who keep a weight loss diary are more successful than those who don’t. Keeping track of your progress allows you to easily see what is working and what is not, so over time your weight loss progress can actually improve. ■ Stay hydrated — We often mistake thirst for hunger and end up eating way more than we should. As a general rule you should drink at least six glasses of water per day. Try to get this fluid from water and not fizzy drinks or fruit juices which can be high in calories and have a diuretic effect on the body. Water also helps the body to work efficiently.

■ Set realistic goals — You are not going to lose 5kg a week for 10 weeks, and chances are you’re not going to give up alcohol for six months either. Set regular, small, attainable goals; this will help to keep you motivated and enable you to see regular progress. ■ Don’t go to extremes — People often go from one extreme to the other when dieting. From a relatively poor diet to eating super healthy. Changes need to be small and regular to allow your body, mind and wellbeing to adapt. Side note: crazy weight loss pills don’t work. ■ Exercise regularly — If you are dieting but not exercising you’re not maximising your potential. Exercise will help to burn extra calories and will also assist your body in maintaining muscle structure and using stored fat as a source of energy. Choose cycling, walking, running, fitness classes, strength training, mix it up and keep it regular, ie five times a week. Losing weight is like riding a rollercoaster: one week you’ll be on cloud nine as you lose a kilo, the next you’ll lose nothing and feel like giving in. DON’T. Hang on to the rollercoaster and keep riding because you’ll get there in the end and boy, it will feel good. The struggle will make you feel stronger.

HOPE SPRINGS

8785983AH

Rated: M Duration: 1hr 40mins Cast: Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell After 30 years of marriage, Kay Soames (Meryl Streep) decides her marriage needs to be spruced up. Although Kay and her husband Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) are dedicated to each other, they’ve lost the spark in their relationship and sleep in separate rooms.

Kay hears about a famous relationship guru — Dr Bernie Feld (Steve Carell) — and signs them up for one week of intense marriage therapy in the small town of Great Hope Springs where Dr Feld is located. Arnold is sceptical and Kay has a hard time convincing him to go. Eventually, the couple leaves for the coast, only to face their real challenges: letting go of the past, revitalizing their marriage, and finding the spark that made them fall in love in the first place. ■ Hope Springs starts at the ShoreLine Cinema Waikanae on August 23.

Its debate on the validity of war, the tragic pretensions of its characters and the investigation of numerous infidelities, are all themes relevant to the 20th Century. It is not an easy play, but very rewarding to study and discuss. Please bring a copy of the text. The Waikanae Music Society’s next concert on Sunday September 2 features a welcome return visit from pianist John Chen, youngest winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition, and one of New Zealand’s most respected professional concert pianists. John is returning to New Zealand from his busy schedule and burgeoning career in Europe for only three concerts — Auckland, Tauranga and Waikanae. This will be the fourth time that John has appeared in Waikanae. He played two solo recitals in 2006 and 2008 and in 2009 returned to play with the T’ang Quartet from Singapore. His 2006 concert still holds the record as the most popular piano recital ever held in Waikanae, with a near capacity audience. Since that time he has been in great demand overseas and is now based in Hamburg with his award-winning Saguaro Piano Trio which gained international attention by taking first prize at the Hamburg Chamber Music Competition in September 2009. His programme is an interesting and varied one, with a Mozart Sonata to open, followed by a piece by the Romanian composer Ensecu, whose music is very expressive and in the romantic style. After the interval there will be a brief piece — From the Mountains to the Sea by New Zealand composer Dorothy Buchanan. The last and most substantial work in

Wellington’s singing sensations The Doubtful Sounds are teaming up with the highly accomplished Strung Out string quartet to perform their unique takes on much-loved pop hits by artists such as Adele, Coldplay, Prince, Guns N’ Roses, Th’ Dudes and many others. ‘‘The bringing together of voices and strings is exciting for us as performers and brings new life and colour to these well-known songs. I think audiences will be blown away by the result,’’ says Bryan Crump, choir leader and arranger of The Doubtful Sounds. Bryan is the host of Radio New Zealand National’s ‘‘Nights With Bryan Crump’’ radio show, and the Doubtful Sounds has grown from being a shared passion for singing amongst his friends and workmates to where it is now an established feature of Wellington’s choral scene. Strung Out, led by cellist and

Paekakariki local Janet Holborow, arrange and perform jazz and Latininspired music, and provide their own arrangements of pop and rock music from the 60s to the 21st century. They have recorded for many major artists and for film soundtracks, and have made numerous appearances for television, films, theatre and dance. The Doubtful Sounds and Strung Out came together for a popular and well-received concert in the Paekakariki Memorial Hall last year. ‘‘Strung Out have always been keen on playing an unexpected variety of music on strings, and it’s great to team up with a choir with a similar passion,’’ says Janet. ■ The Doubtful Sounds and Strung Out will perform in the Paekakariki Memorial Hall on Sunday August 26 from 2.30pm. Entry is $15 for waged, and by koha for unwaged.

Parcel test a challenge ■

GUEST: Ken Milne, left, of the Rotary Club of Kapiti introduces guest speaker Roger Clausen.

Island plan presented

Well-known adventurer and philanthropist Roger Clausen was guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Kapiti. He had accompanied economist Dr Gareth Morgan on a Russian ice-breaker to Antarctica earlier this year. The purpose of this visit was to gain more knowledge of the territory, and to ascertain what assistance could be provided to enhance the southernmost environment. Ten scientific experts and 40 everyday New Zealanders made up the party. Following visits to Scott Base and Shackleton’s Hut at Cape Royds, the ship called at Campbell Island and Antipodes Island, where it was learned from DOC personnel that mice have infested the whole island. ‘‘We became aware that the mice are destroying albatross chicks and young penguins,’’ Mr Clausen said. ‘‘On the spot, it was decided to raise the money necessary to launch an eradication programme to protect the natural habitat of this wonderful island.’’ The group headed by Mr Clausen and Gareth Morgan, are now well on the way to securing the $1 million to enable DOC to completely eradicate mice from Antipodes Island.

Paraparaumu College Year 12 home economics students were surprised to discover how many people in Kapiti relied on food bank parcels to feed their families. Fifteen students were tasked with examining the subject of food insecurity helped by information from Kapiti Community Food Bank. ‘‘I don’t think they realised how big a problem food insecurity is in Paraparaumu, not knowing where your next meal is coming from,’’ said Michelle Green head of home economics department, ‘‘people have to decide which bills to pay, after the rent and the power there isn’t enough money for food.’’ The challenge set to the students then was, ‘‘you now have to pick some of the ingredients that are in a typical food box and produce recipes of things you would like to eat — only from those boxes.’’ They were also allowed one dollar but could not assume that there were any of the extras like fish or soy sauce already in the cupboard and only given salt and pepper as seasoning. ‘‘It was quite a challenge,’’ Ms Green said. Both Naykita ShelfordHinds and Megan Dixon had persevered where others found it too difficult and dropped out. ‘‘I told the class that whoever could come up with the most inventive ideas I would find some prizes for.’’ Naykita made fish pie using tinned fish and potatoes (the fresh element provided by a food bank). She said the most difficult part was making a cheeseless cheese sauce.

Megan had chosen to make a vegetarian risotto using ordinary rice (there was no special arborio rice in the food box). Ms Green said Megan practised at home assessing how to make the rice absorb liquid and the amount of time needed. Megan said she used a tin of

Two shows at Mahara

Two new exhibitions are opening at Mahara Gallery Waikanae. Toi Tu¯, Firstly, Toi Tu, Toi Matanui, Toi te Kupu features artworks created by students, tutors and associate artists of Toi Whakarakai, the Design and Art school of Te Wananga o Raukawa, based in Otaki. Toi Whakarakai endeavours to nurture the artistry and customary weaving and carving practices of the ancestors. ‘Art Standing Proudly; Art Out in the Open; transports these ancient techniques into the contemporary arena as we re-instate and extend skills practised by our grandparents’. In Neww SPACE is Greg Chaston’s exhibition: Being There — Impressions of New Zealand Greg Chaston’s paintings reflect New Zealand influences in his life ranging from childhood through to poetry, particularly that of James K. Baxter, and stories of New Zealand heroes including Pohe and von Tempsky, which also deal with aspects of New Zealand’s bi-cultural history. He is also a landscape painter and combines linear elements and texture in works that shift fluidly between abstraction and representation. Waikanae-based Chaston studied at Wellington School of Design and exhibited in solo and group shows during the 1970s. After 20 years of working in the commercial sector Chaston returned to more serious painting and was a founding member of ‘The Mercer 5’ a Wellington artists’ co-operative. Chaston has exhibited in group and solo shows at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, at his own FrontLawn Gallery in Waikanae, and has twice been a finalist in both the Molly Morpeth Canaday exhibition at Whakatane Museum, and the Adam Portrait Award at the NZ Portrait Gallery, Wellington. The Exhibitions open on Friday

Start thinking about how you can decorate the outside of you home or business in lights for all of Kapiti to see and enjoy. Watch this space or listen to Beach FM for more information.

Magic melodies, smooth harmonies and steaming hot dancing will be served up in the latest show from Coasters Musical Theatre — Inspirations, devised and directed by Charlotte Kerrigan. Jazz, blues and a smattering of soul from the 1930-60s combined with songwriters from today who may have been inspired by those old classics are given a rework by the small but talented cast of 15, ranging in age from 17 to somewhere in the 70s! Standards such as Fly me to the Moon square off with Michael Buble’s Haven’t met you yet. Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald face off against Norah Jones and Amy Winehouse. The Andrew Sisters are

given a run for their money by Christina Aguilera. Audiences will be treated to familiar standards as well as some ‘new classics’ and will leave snapping their fingers and tapping their toes. Newcomers to Coasters in the cast include three Kapiti College students Trent Taylor, Sally Brady and Ryan Coughlan, two of who have just returned from competing in the World Choir Games in America where the Jazz Choir won two silver medals. Another coup for the cast is Dez McCormack who has previously sung professionally in Australia including in Les Miserables at the Princess Theatre. Also singing in the show are all four Retro Divas, a local

covers band who specialise in music of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Director Charlotte Kerrigan, a music teacher at Raumati Beach School has just finished directing an abbreviated show for the school Glee Club which was also put on at Coasters Musical Theatre. The standard of the school production set the bar very high, but they have more than met their match with the current version . ■ Inspirations: A Jazz and Blues Cabaret runs from Aug 24 to Sept 8. proven technologies on their journey to commercialisation.’’ Trust members include Simon Arnold, a Wellington businessman who has been involved in clean technology start-up companies; Tim Armstrong, a Te Horo energy management and renewable technologies consultant; Kapiti property developer Stuart Pritchard; Kapiti Coast District Council councillor Tony Lester and Kapiti resident Ann Verboeket, a senior economic development associate for Economic Development Agencies of New Zealand. Dr Steven Finlay, former manager of the Clean Technology Centre of Excellence for Grow Wellington, has been appointed CEO. Mr Moloney says he is looking forward to working with experienced

people of such high calibre. ‘‘I can’t imagine a better team to be driving such a significant venture. ‘‘This is about promoting cutting edge technology, which is in huge demand internationally. If we get this right the benefits for Kapiti and the wider Wellington region will be enormous,’’ says Mr Moloney. Kapiti Coast District Council has approved a $1.5 million loan to help the trust with set-up and development costs. Part of the council’s staged loan to the trust will be used to fund innovative projects in partnership with agencies such as the Ministry of Science and Innovation. Long term, the trust aims to develop a clean technology business park in Otaki, adjacent to the Clean Technology Centre.

BIG SPLASH: Raumati Swimming Club entered two teams in to the Wellington region under 13 2012 interclub league series. The teams consisted of eight RSC swimmers each and competed against 18 other teams in the Wellington area. The club series consists of four meets over the winter period with individual events and a strong emphasis on relay events. RSC Team A came second and RSC Team B was third over all Wellington clubs. RSC Team A actually won two of the series but lost on overall points by a narrow margin. Junior club coach Chris Roberts was thrilled with the results and says this shows the high calibre of junior swimmers coming through the club and beginning to compete at a high level.

Is your body on fire?

(Part 3)

l John Arts This week we look at perhaps a more sinister type of inflammation. This type is often described as “silent” inflammation as it has no particular signs. You can appear to be fit and healthy and yet have this low grade inflammation causing massive destruction especially to your blood vessels.

0800 ASPHALT 04 298 1066 COMPLETE CONSTRUCTION SERVICES from concept to completion

This silent inflammation is a little like a dripping tap. The amount of water dripping is low but over time it can overflow the sink and cause damage. We all have a level of background inflammation. Your doctor can arrange a high sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP) blood test to check your levels. According to Paul Ridker a CRP reading of over 3 puts you at a high risk of cardiovascular disease. A reading between 1 and 3 indicates a moderate risk and a level of below 1 a low risk.

This type of inflammation is involved in the hardening of arteries and the formation of plaques that restrict blood flow. Leading cardiac researcher’s such as cardiologist Paul Ridker have identified this type of inflammation as posing a greater risk to heart arteries than cholesterol. The result is a wide range of circulatory diseases from heart artery disease, strokes, poor peripheral circulation, raised blood pressure and even male impotence and cramps. Research by Ridker and many others have clearly established that arteriosclerosis, the formation of plaques in arteries, is a result of the inflammatory process rather than just high cholesterol. The series of events starts with LDL cholesterol becoming trapped within artery walls.

process occurs over a long period, plaques can grow restricting blood supply and at worst can rupture causing clots leading to heart attacks and strokes.

Fortunately this type of low grade silent inflammation can be readily influenced by changing nutrient intakes. Next time you are having your cholesterol tested, ask for an hsCRP test. If this is over 2 you should get advice and create an antiinflammatory diet and supplement action to help you to live a full life free from circulatory disease. Give me a call if you need help.

Future seen for Mahara The future for Mahara Gallery in Waikanae looks even brighter since the Kapiti Coast District Council finalised its long term (20 year) plan that includes a commitment to continue its support and expansion. Mahara Trust board chairman John Mowbray said: ‘‘This is a great step forward for the region. ‘‘We are pleased the council has looked at the

evidence and seen value in this investment which will reward the community culturally and economically. ‘‘There is still much work to be done and the board is looking forward to working with the council.’’ He said council has agreed to fund one third of the proposed gallery redevelopment, spread over three years, providing the Mahara Gallery Trust comes

up with the balance of the required funds. ‘‘This means that the trust can restart its fundraising campaign with renewed confidence,’’ Mr Mowbray said. ‘‘Other potential funders can now be secure that the project has council backing and input.’’ Council will contribute $1,196,000 (plus CPI) and $250,000 will come from the

Waikanae Community Board. Work on the joint Mahara Gallery/Waikanae Library project will be deferred until 2015/16 to give Mahara Trust time to raise the remaining two thirds of the funds estimated for the gallery upgrade. If the Mahara Trust raises the required two thirds before 2015/16 the council will consider bringing the project forward.

Students gain hands-on aid skills ASSIST: Waikanae School pupil Natalie Watson tilts Tommie Milne’s head to open her airway during a medical skills session. Lou Woodney from NZ Red Cross spent a week at the school running a first aid course. Children were involved in practical activities such as implementing the ABCs and putting the ‘patient’ in a recovery position. A number of common scenarios were covered. The children learnt how to help someone who was choking and practised using slaps on the back and chest thrusts if the patient can’t cough or speak. They discovered they can use plastic bags or gloves to protect themselves if someone is bleeding, how to apply direct pressure to a wound, and to elevate the wounded area to reduce blood loss. Also covered were how to deal with broken bones by keeping the injury still and supporting it, nose bleeds (sit down, pinch the nose and lean forward), burns and scalds (cool it, cover it and call for help), poisons found in the home or in the community and the 0800 POISON centre, and how to help someone in Photo: CCN310712SPLabc shock.

Daffodil Day

Fingers Crossed for • By Kim Dunne

The abundance of those cheerful, bright yellow flowers on the Cancer Society’s ‘Daffodil Day’ is something many of us have become accustomed to over the years. But as spring arrives, it’s not always plain sailing for the growers responsible for making sure there are enough fresh daffodils to brighten up offices and homes all around Wellington. John Atkins, Regional Manager for their main supplier, is used to the uncertainty that comes at this very busy time, and after 16 years in the job, he’s bracing himself for whatever the season may bring.

EASY THERE: Floran, a Lord of the Rings horse, arrives at the launch of Super Minx in Otaki, with rider Jane Lenaghan. Photo: Supplied / CCN200812SPLhorse

“It’s always a bit of a juggling act because the weather is such a dominant feature. Last year, winter came late, bringing snow, and that slowed up the whole process. Now this year with the warmer weather, the daffodils are budding a little early. You just never know how things will go, but we always seem to get there in the end,” he says.

Surprises mounted

It may be a difficult job to co-ordinate, but the Cancer Society’s ‘Daffodil Day’ is the most important in its calendar for raising awareness and vital funds. Now in its 22nd year, this iconic event, which takes place on August 31, will again be spreading joy and hope for the 1 in 3 New Zealanders affected by cancer.

Some people describe the sound as a deep rumbling noise. It sounds like a truck idling or a drilling, vibrating sound. The noise had been heard in Waikanae and Kapiti. The noise is often worse after midnight and can be worse indoors. If you are being annoyed by the constant sound of the humm. Then please email us at tickets@xtra.co.nz and let us know your location/ address and how long you have noticed this noise.

When advertising agency Luvly promised Minx Shoes a launch night to remember, it’s likely it lived up to that promise. The newly rebranded Super Minx held a relaunch night at the Otaki Civic Theatre with a circus atmosphere and ‘‘Surprise’’ theme, which included a horse and rider entering the party. That horse was Floran, with local owner and rider Jane Lenaghan. Floran was Liv Tyler’s horse in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, while Ms Lenaghan was Tyler’s stunt double.

Luvly artistic director Maggie Mouat says they wanted to make the relaunch memorable, ‘‘an event that you truly got surprised from’’. She says Floran had an ‘‘unbelievable temperament’’ and was very welltrained. Their brief, of ‘‘surprises’’, also stems from Super Minx incorporating overseas products. ‘‘So every box you open is a bit of a surprise, some are Minx, some are overseas brands. ‘‘We promised our client that it would be a night to remember. ‘‘I think we achieved that.’’

IN BRIEF SINGLE ISSUE

The council has written to retailers asking for help during the transition from paper to plastic rubbish bags. The official paper rubbish bags, which have been phased out, used to be sold individually whereas the yellow biodegradable plastic ones are sold in packs of five. ‘‘It seems some people buy only one rubbish bag a week and can’t afford to pay for a pack of five,’’ council infrastructure services manager Sean Mallon said. ‘‘To help them out we have asked retailers to sell single bags where possible.’’ Single bags can also be bought through council service centres and the council will look at asking suppliers to provide boxes of single bags with barcodes during the next tender round in October.

The recommended retail price for a single bag is $3.60.

Music lessons offered A trio of leading contemporary musicians and singers have come together to offer introductory lessons the Kapiti Community Centre starting on Wednesday August 22. These beginners’ lessons in singing, guitar and ukulele, are a great way for people to get started, without the expense of one-on-one lessons. Fiona Bee, who studied at NASDA has sung several bilingual children’s songs for television as well as appearing on the Good Morning Show and Showcase were she was voted back as the viewer favourite. After finding a talent and passion in blues, soul and power ballad styles, she began teaching and then moved on to sing with the Disco Divas and co-formed a soul and blues band Frankie and the Bee that perform throughout central NZ. Cam Sutton has been playing guitar for 27 years. Cam studied guitar and drama at the Excel School of Performing Arts in Auckland and toured NZ with them in 1997. Since then most of his playing has revolved around church

music. Cam played guitar for two series of Lads TV, an American made kids TV series. He picked up the Ukulele a couple of years ago, transferring his knowledge of guitar playing on to the smaller instrument. Kieran Gallaghar has been playing guitar for around 17 years, beginning with local teacher Dieter Burmester. In high school his band won the Wellington Rockquest final and he’s now played in bands for around 12 years and toured the country several times. He currently teaches private lessons in Kapiti and Johnsonville, and performs in two Wellington bands. He has a diploma in guitar teaching. ■ Singing lessons with Fiona start Wednesday, August 22, at 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Ukulele and guitar lessons with Cam start Tuesday, August 28, at 7pm and 8pm respectively. Guitar lessons for all ages with Kieran start Sunday, August 26, at 6pm. The New Zealand Chocolate Festival (NZCF) will bring more than one and a half tonnes of chocolate to Wellington at the end of the week, tempting its residents to dip their digits in the sweet stuff. Chocolate lovers will get a chance to make their own chocolate truffles in the festival’s new Heilala Vanilla Chocolate Factory. NZCF director Frank Stoltenberg says that along with demonstrations from the New Zealand Pastry Team and some of New Zealand’s top chocolatiers, this year people will start to appreciate the art of working with chocolate not only by seeing, but by doing. ‘‘We want to bring everyone a step closer to discovering what it takes to work with this much loved but highly temperamental ingredient. ‘‘Our chefs will prepare gallons of creamy chocolate ganache, which factory visitors will get to shape with their own hands into one of the oldest known types of chocolate indulgences — the classic chocolate truffle. ‘‘After coarsely coating the truffles with cacao powder or ground nuts, they will be welcome to take them away or eat them on the spot if temptation proves too much to resist. ‘‘Of course, everyone will walk away with the

Shining a light on bullying At The Lighthouse After School centre in Paraparaumu, a group of school children are painting anti-bullying slogans on some of the windows. “Say no to Bullying” it reads. Students, their parents and the staff at the centre are working together to create new anti-bullying policy and procedures for the centre which provides an after-school and school holiday programmes. “We already have a policy, but we are working together to make it more robust,” children’s coordinator Shelley Tomlinson said. “We have a student social worker visiting the centre who is talking to the children and getting their ideas. Every child and every family has a different perception of bullying so we want to make our policies and procedures relevant. I don’t believe we have any bullying, but it would be naïve of me to suggest it couldn’t happen with the number of children we have here.” While younger children are wielding their paintbrushes to reinforce the “no bullying”message, the students in the Youth programme for 11 to 13 year olds are preparing for a fundraiser for the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day. Shelley says they will be baking cakes to sell to the children of the after-school programme and their parents. It is this interaction between the Lighthouse, the families and the wider community that has earned The Lighthouse the title of Best Oscar Programme three times in its ten years. Though the Oscar (Out of School Care and Recreation) Foundation has now been disbanded, the Ministry of Social Development is looking to establish somethng similar to tale its place, Shelley says. Last year, staff and members of the youth programme went to Christchurch to run a school holiday programme for Christchurch youngsters affected by the earthquakes. They took with them quilts donated by a church group in the United States and the publicity generated by this has resulted in many more quilts being sent. A donation of 500 pairs of shoes was also sent to Christchurch where they were sold

to raise funds for the church youth group where the school holiday programme was held. Children from schools across Paraparaumu and Raumati attend The Lighthouse After School programme and Shelley says about 80 per cent of the families receive WINZ funding. “That shows we are reaching the people we want to help – the solo parents and lower income families.” The Lighthouse is about to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its opening by Gene and Shelley Tomlinson. “That will be the theme of our next school holiday programme – a celebration of ten years,” Shelley says. The original Lighthouse was founded in the former Pier Hotel, now the site of the Pier Apartments, where it operated until the move to the present site in Magrath Ave, Paraparaumu. Our teachers respect each child as an individual. This is supported by a curriculum that encourages exploration and the development of independent thinking and learning. Children throughout the centre are encouraged to recognise that learning is not always confined to the classroom through experiencing excursions into the community that extend and build on their interests and knowledge. Learning and natural curiosity are enhanced throughout all age groups, developmental stages and abilities with a programme that includes opportunities for self-expression and self-discovery through music, art, drama and play.Numeracy, literacy and science are interwoven throughout the curriculum from Infants & Toddlers through to our Stepping Stones Licence. Our Young Childrens Licence is designed to promote small group interactions and positive play experiences. Breakfast like a King Waikanae Montessori families will come together to Breakfast like a King on Tuesday next week. Head teacher Margaret de Vries says the annual event is based on the old healthy eating adage: “Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and have dinner like a pauper.” “We are promoting breakfast as the most important meal of the day to the children,” Mrs De Vries said.

Mrs de Vries says it is important to reinforce ritual and traditions for parents and children. “Many of our children are here for three years. The first year the children don’t take much in – they are probably sitting on their mother’s knees. The second year they participate and by the time their third Breakfast like a King comes round they remember and are excited by the prospect.”

“Parents will supply fruit and cereals, yoghurt, bacon and eggs and other breakfast foods. The tables will be set and decorated with flowers and each pupil will make a crown to wear to the breakfast.

Any parents interested in finding out more about Waikanae Montessori will receive a warm welcome and be shown around the classrooms and the beautiful grounds.

“It’s quite overwhelming for the children to see such a variety of choices for breakfast. We are stimulating the idea that there’s a lot of healthy food out there. It also fits in with the Olympic studies we have just done, where we learnt that sports people have to eat healthy food to do well at their sport.”

The Montessori method of pre-school education is known and respected in many countries around the world and the Waikanae pre-school was one of the first to be established in New Zealand and is now one of three operating in the Kapiti area. For more information visit the website, http:// waikanaemontessori.school.nz or phone 902 6135. Waikanae Montesori Pre-school is at 1b Seddon St, Waikane.

Breakfast like a King has been run for 15 years at Waikanae Montessori pre-School and is part of the philosophy for children in Montessori schools worldwide - “Help me to help myself” “I think we have a serious problem here in New Zealand and it will impose more strain on the public health system,”Mrs de Vries says. “The more we can do to keep our bodies healthy, and help our children to learn about healthy eating the better. We’re here to promote the well-rounded aspcts of all facets of the human being. Education for life is to have a high quality of life.” The celebration serves another valuable function, being a social bonding for parents.

And After School Care

Choosing for your child.

Life changes impact on every member of the family – not least the children.

For pre-schoolers, in-home child care may be the answer, where a baby is cared for in a family setting or you may prefer a creche or day-care environment for your youngster.

For the children in most families, they are in the care of one or both of their parents for the first few months of life. After that, the situation often becomes more fluid. A mother’s maternity leave may expire and she wishes to return to her former job. A training opportunity arises and with it the challenge of taking on a new career. An unemployed Dad finds work or a promotion means longer working hours. Financial circumstances mean both parents must work. At any time in a child’s life, at least until age 14, there may be a need for full-time or part time care away from the family home.

Do your research. What is the philosophy of the care programmes you are looking at. A number are founded on religious principles and will incorporate their values into their activities. While this suits many parents – it does not suit all.

Pre-school care and education, before and after school care, holiday programmes – how do you choose? Geography will be a prime consideration. If you are commuting a long distance every day you may not want a long detour at the beginning and end of your day to drop off and pick up youngsters. Check out the carers in your neighbourhood and talk to parents whose children are happy and enjoying their care situation. Arrange to visit the centre and prepare a list of questions that are important to you.

Holiday programmes offer exciting possibilities in a wide range of situations – not just day care. It may be that a child needs some extra stimulation and company over the holiday break. If there are younger children in the household, parents may find it difficult to organise a lot of outings and activities and the many holiday programmes on the Coast give a range of options for time spent away from the PlayStation.

Advance planning is ideal as not every centre will be able to accept a new child with no advance notice. Looking to the New Year, this is probably the ideal time to consider your options for 2013.

Grandparents caring for children find day care a welcome break as the catch up on their own activities. Care, company and creativity for kids. Check out the opportunities these pages afford.

Websites will often give you guidelines to what you can expect from pre-school or after-school care. Funding is available in most circumstances to assist with your child’s placement.

Kapiti has baggage Local authorities in the Wellington region wanting to amalgamate with Kapiti may have to think twice, councillor K Gurunathan says. Joining with Kapiti could lead to the authorities having to embrace the introduction of universal water meters, he said. Mr Gurunathan said Kapiti Coast District Council will have fully introduced water meters and volumetric charging by the end of next year — the only local authority to do so in the region. ‘‘A pilot study commissioned by the council for Infrastructure Development and Water New Zealand, released last month, said councils were resisting water meters because of strong community resistance. ‘‘The Government’s National Infrastructure Plan 2011 advocates water meters. ‘‘This same Government is also pushing an agenda for amalgamation. ‘‘Given the entrenched public opposition to water meters in the Hutt councils, Wellington and Porirua cities, any amalgamation with Kapiti poses the danger of a toxic policy backflow and a precedent for the introduction of water meters in those

Packaging bulk of waste audit

Given the entrenched public opposition to water meters in the Hutt councils, Wellington and Porirua cities, any amalgamation with Kapiti poses the danger of a toxic policy backflow and a precedent for the introduction of water meters in those communities.

Students from local enviroschool, Kapiti College, gave up their lunch hour last Wednesday, to sort through and analyse one day’s worth of school waste from the previous day. An audit of almost 42kg of waste was carried out, filling eight large rubbish sacks from bins across the school. With gloved hands, the Green Team sorted items into separate bins for food scraps, paper towels, paper and cardboard, recyclables (metal, glass and plastic), and general waste. These bins were then weighed and measured. ‘‘Disposable food packaging comprised a significant proportion of the general waste,’’ said Kapiti Coast District Council waste minimisation officer Simon Calcinai, who helped with the audit. ‘‘Some of this could be avoided by opting for reusable containers and cups or mugs. ‘‘Paper and cardboard use

communities. ‘‘It would be useful to know how the advocates of super councils, like Fran Wilde and Kapiti’s Nigel Wilson, hope to manage this problem.’’ Cr Gurunathan said others advocating various lesser levels of amalgamation also face the same question.

‘‘Would they ditch Kapiti’s water meters after amalgamation? ‘‘Given the Government’s advocacy for water meters, would the new and bigger council impose water meters on all the communities? ‘‘Or, would they manage Kapiti’s already metered communities separately?’’

Providing:

and disposal is a huge issue in schools, but savings can be made once recycling systems are in place. ‘‘Paper/cardboard recycling collection for schools is typically cheaper than general waste collection on a volumetric basis.’’ The main items in the general (non-recyclable) waste category were chip punnets from the canteen, and plastic wrap from home lunches as well as the canteen. The school-wide waste audit follows an audit of staff rubbish the students carried out in June. During this audit, 12.5kg of waste was sorted and examined. The Green Team’s message to students and staff alike is: ‘‘Think about what you’re throwing in the bin, and where it goes. ‘‘Think about what you use in the first place.’’ Their vision is to reduce paper wastage through recycling, and create compost and worm farm systems.

Financial check for home loan

When applying for a home loan it is common that banks will ask for a copy of your last three months’ bank statements. They do this as part of their assessment of your home loan application. The things they check for are dishonoured payments, unauthorised overdrafts, failed direct debits, undisclosed debts and check what income is deposited. They check that your bank statement income matches your payslip and the application form. Boarder income can also be verified and to a lesser extent they do look at spending habits. For example, are you spending more than you earn or making multiple cash withdrawals at casinos and race tracks? If it’s your first home, the bank will look at your savings account statements to see that you have been making regular savings. Often you will need to show you have genuinely saved 5 per cent deposit with regular deposits. To give your home loan application the best possible chance for approval it pays to look carefully at your bank statements. Make sure that in the three months leading up to applying for a home loan, you keep your statements as ‘clean and tidy’ as possible. That means not going into unauthorised overdrafts, making sure that any little debts that you have are paid off if possible and all liabilities

8832597AA

that are stated in your application do match up with what is being paid out of your accounts. It is critical to make sure that there are no dishonoured payments or unauthorised overdrafts as this will show that you cannot manage your money properly. If refinancing to another bank, then up to six months’ bank statements on the loan account will be required. In this instance the bank looks for things like loan arrears or missed mortgage payments. If you have missed mortgage payments in the last three to six months it’s less likely a bank will want your business. If you are consolidating debts as part of a refinance or a top-up then normally you need to provide a minimum three months’ worth of statements for the debt with a good repayment history. So prior to any home loan application it’s critical to do your homework first and in need, get expert help to give yourself the best chance of approval. This will in turn make you more attractive as a client and increase your negotiating power. ■ For a free copy of our First Home Buyer Guide contact our team 7 days a week on 0800 000 517 or email craig@craigpope.co.nz for all your mortgage and insurance needs. Low-cost pet care tips

51

A

CCORDING to the New Zealand Pet Food Manufacturers Association, New Zealand’s pet ownership statistics are among the highest in the world. They say more than 48 per cent of households own at least one cat and 20 per cent own two or more. That is more than a million cats. Just over 29 per cent of households own a dog . . . medium and large breeds are most popular but there is a definite trend towards smaller breeds. People living off the smell of an oily rag may need to think twice or thrice about how much they spend on pets, and be imaginative in ways they can reduce the costs but continue to enjoy the pleasures of pets. The first thing oily rag pet owners can do is figure out how much pets are costing. Keep a record over the next month. One of the biggest costs will be food. Although cats eat less than dogs their food is twice as expensive, because they tend to be a fussy lot. About 51 per cent of all cat food sold is in cans, which is expensive, compared to 13 per cent for dogs. About 42 per cent of dog food is sold as dog sausage. Oily raggers are keen on pets and the oily rag mailbags have been full of cost-saving tips on pet care. ■ Having a dog invariably means dog hair and doggie-doos on the carpet. A reader recommends cleaning carpets with baking soda. Pierce the lid of a jar with about eight holes. Fill the jar with baking soda and shake it all over the carpet. Leave for about 30 minutes then vacuum. ■ Another reader makes their own dog shampoo. She mixes baking soda with water to make a wet shampoo and rubs it into her dog’s coat. The baking soda neutralises

odours and is gritty, so it removes dirt and oils. ■ Another has a recipe for a lowcost flea repellent. Simply mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Place in a spray bottle and spray on to your dog’s coat, then rub in. Apparently, fleas are not keen on the smell of vinegar. Another reader says they put a clove of garlic in their dog’s drinking water — they say it keeps fleas at bay and also works as a worm treatment. ■ Another reader says, ‘‘Our dog developed an allergy to red meat (very common in older dogs). The vet recommended a diet of cooked rice, veges and a little dried dog food. He advised us to buy the cheapest rice and cook it in bulk and to add carrots and greens. She lived another eight years on this diet and was very healthy and happy.’’ ■ Treat pet sores with a leaf from the aloe vera plant. Break open a leaf and apply its gel to the sore. ■ Margaret, from Whangarei, adds linseed to her dogs’ cooked food to give them shiny coats. She buys cheap reject cuts of meat from a butcher and freezes them, and she buys dog biscuits in bulk from a rural wholesale outlet. ■ Kaye, from Te Puke, says, ‘‘When feeding puppies or younger dogs, boil all your vege scraps (potato skins and carrot peelings, etc) then, when soft, mash them up . . . they really love it and it’s great

for them. Also, freshly picked lavender rubbed along a dog’s back keeps away fleas.’’ ■ Be sensible about vet care. If the procedure required is pretty standard (such as a chip implant) shop around for the best price. If it is something else, ask your vet for a cost estimate before they start. The internet has as much information as you will ever need to know about vaccinations, flea treatments, common ailments, natural remedies, and so on. You could also become your pet’s dental hygienist. ■ ‘‘Free to a good home’’ is the best way to ‘‘buy’’ pets. No need to waste money when so many pets need homes. Alternatively, you could try the local pound, but watch out — the pet may be free, but vaccination charges and other add-ons won’t be. ■ Stella, from Napier, has a tip on transporting pets. ‘‘Put in a pet cage and cover with a towel to keep pet calm. Securing cage with a seatbelt gives extra protection in case of accident.’’ Do you have a favourite moneysaving pet-care tip that you would like to share with others? Let us know by going to www.oilyrag.co.nz or writing to PO Box 984, Whangarei. ■ Frank and Muriel Newman are the authors of Living Off the Smell of an Oily Rag in NZ. Readers can submit their oily rag tips at www.oilyrag.co.nz.

Paraparaumu College junior girls’ badminton team have come back from the CSW junior individual tournament and the CSW junior regional champs, having previously won the junior girls’ northern division 1 convincingly. The team comprised Brooke Lawry, Macaela Syman, Kristen Yorker, Kimiya Zerafat and Rachel Cosgrove. The CSW junior tournament saw all the girls entered as individuals with much better results than predicted. Kimiya and Rachel were unfortunately knocked out in the first round and went onto the plate competition. Rachel progressed through to the plate final but was beaten. Brooke won her first game and in her second game, was unlucky to come up against the top seed who eventually won the competition. Kristen and Macaela both progressed very well with Kristen making the quarterfinals and Macaela the semifinals, being beaten by the second seed. Coach Gaye Syman said: “I

was extremely pleased with their progress at this tournament. ‘‘This was their first outing against players from the whole Wellington region and they have all done very well.” In order to play for the title of regional champs the girls had to play St Oran’s. It was the first to 21 points and the results ended with one singles match and one doubles match being won but St Oran’s took it out to face St Catherine’s in the final, with St Oran’s being the eventual winners. Badminton convenor Guy Martin said: “The girls played really well with Macaela winning her singles by one point and Brooke losing her singles by one. ‘‘Rachel and Brooke also won their doubles, which was a good lift for them. ‘‘The girls are

Tawa College 2 beat Otaki College 3-1 in the College Sport Wellington girls northern division 2 football final played at Haruatai Park, Otaki. Tawa led 1-0 at half time but Otaki levelled early into the second half through Niwi Kiriona. But after a hard midfield tussle Tawa ended up winning 3-1 with the final goal minutes before full time. Otaki had topped the table, winning the home venue. During the season the teams had played twice, sharing the honours. ‘‘This year’s Otaki College team has made huge progress,’’ coach John Heenan said. ‘‘With only two players returning to the team from last year there has been a lot of improvement from a very inexperienced squad.’’ The finals team had six Year 13 players, only captain

GO ASHLEIGH: Ashleigh Stevenson competing in midfield and fast paced work on both sides when Tawa Girls 2 played Otaki Girls at Haruatai last Wednesday, background Otaki players Sjaan Anderson, left, Moihi Hakaria, right.

Alisha Andrews played for the school last year. The team included six Year 9 students and one Year 10, all new to this year’s team and a great foundation for next the next year or two.

Smylie a winner Kapiti men’s basketball player Hamish Smylie was selected for an invitation under 23 team that competed at the Melbourne Tigers tournament held at Dandenong Stadium, Melbourne in July. The team called Aotearoa Basketball and coached by Junior Tall Black coach Deslea Wrathall, took out the tournament —undefeated. ‘‘It was a great experience and great to come away with a NZ team winning the tournament and a huge coup to come away having gone through the tournament undefeated,’’ Smylie said. ‘‘The only team to come close to us was the team we played in the final which was a Melbourne club team, we won the final by 10 points. ‘‘They had 20 minute halves and no shot clock so the Aussie teams played slow and did not let us run much which was our strength.’’ Hamish received plenty of court time playing about half a game every game. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
