A hobbit, a wimpy kid, Batman and Bond

In amongst some questionable re-releases in 3D, the usual number of remakes and a heap of sequels, Kate Bleasdale finds some films due for release this year that should be worth a trip to the cinema.

Sione’s 2: Unfinished Business The cheeky Island boys are back in this sequel to the 2006 local hit, Sione’s Wedding. Now it’s five years later, and the gang has been ordered to find their friend Paul (David Fane), who seems to be running around Auckland in disguise. The storyline may not be as strong as the first, but there should be some good local humour in there. Opening January 19 We Need to Talk About Kevin Created from the chilling novel by Lionel Shriver, the story follows a firsttime mother who doesn’t love her son, and how he grows up to become a mass murderer. The book is quite intense and the film seems to pick on the same vibe. Needless to say, it might put some people off having kids. Opening February 19 Project X An original film by first-time director Nima Nourizadeh, this time it’s the geeky kid’s turn to throw a massive house party. While the plot sounds cliched, the whole thing has been filmed in the first-person (think Blair Witch Project) and with an

entire cast of unknowns. Apparently there was a lot of secrecy around Project X, and cast members weren’t allowed to take the script off set. Opening March 1 21 Jump Street It looks like this remake has erred more on the side of comedy than action. The film version of the 1980s action series starring Johnny Depp (pictured in character) is written and starring Jonah Hill (Superbad). So there’s plenty of R-rated humour. Two new cops find themselves thrown back into high school to try and uncover a student drug ring. Keep your eyes peeled for a cameo by the Deppster. Opening March 22 The Lorax Dr Seuss’ children’s story of a world with no trees is becoming ever relevant, and now it’s been turned into an animated film. Featuring the voices of Danny Devito, Zac Efron (High School Musical) and singer Taylor Swift, the story follows a young boy who endeavours to find out about the Lorax’s world to capture the heart of the girl of his dreams. From the

creators of Despicable Me. Opening March 29 The Dark Knight Rises This is the third and final of director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, taking a much darker angle than the 90s films. In this instalment, Batman (Christian Bale) comes up against superstrong villain Bane (Tom Hardy) and Catwoman (Anne Hathaway). Opening July 19 Skyfall Daniel Craig makes his third outing as James Bond, where the focus is on M’s (Judi Dench) past and 007’s loyalty to her. M16 comes under attack, and Bond must track down the threat. Javier Bardrem (No Country for Old Men) has been confirmed as the villain. Opening November 22 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey This is the one that’s been happening under our noses for the past couple of years. Peter Jackson takes on Bilbo’s (Martin Freeman) epic adventure with Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and a group of 13 dwarfs to slay the dragon Smaug.

Opening December 14 The Rum Diary Following after 1998’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is another experience of Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, this time of a stint in Puerto

Rico during the 1950s. Johnny Depp takes on the role of Thompson yet again, and embarks on an adventure fuelled by booze, maniacal ideas and a dangerous love triangle. No release date yet for New Zealand, but due to be out in the United States in October.
