KFC becomes Credit Union
It’s been a derelict building for some time, but what used to be the KFC building on Wainuiomata Rd is finally to be utilised again. NZCU Baywide — Wainuiomata is moving its branch to the premises at 8 Wainuiomata Rd this Saturday and wants to celebrate the move with its members and the Wainuiomata community. ‘‘The investment in the new branch is a reflection of the commitment NZCU Baywide has to the Wainuiomata community and the fantastic support the credit union has from the Wainuiomata community,’’ NZCU Baywide chief executive Gavin Earle says.

The Site Employees Credit Union was formed in 1983 by employees, led by Tony Swanink, at the Ford assembly plant in Seaview. At that time the Credit Union was run on a voluntary basis and members of the Credit Union had to be a Ford employee. The support was so great that closure of the Ford plant in 1988 did not see the end of the Credit Union. Mr Swanink moved the Credit Union to Wainuiomata, operating from his home, with the support of his wife, Margaret. The Credit Union’s name was changed to Hutt Valley Cooperative Credit Union (HVCCU) and its common bond was also
changed to allow people of the Lower Hutt community to join. The credit union was still operated on a voluntary basis. In 1996, HVCCU opened an office at Wainuiomata Shopping Centre and hired its first paid employees while still led by Mr Swanink. One of those original employees, Kay Smith, is still working for the Credit Union in Wainuiomata. ‘‘The Credit Union in Wainuiomata has been a part of the community for over 20 years, we have members who are third and fourth generation,’’ says Mrs Smith. After 22 years of service, Mr Swanink retired in 2005 and
Beverley Wheoki took over the reins. In 2008 HVCCU merged with NZCU Baywide. Team Leader Jenny McMurchie is excited about the move. ‘‘We have a dedicated team and we are all looking forward to being able to offer a complete banking service, in much more comfortable surroundings, to our members.’’ It has been nearly two years since the building was last used, as a short-lived, American-style restaurant. In December 2008 its previous tenant, KFC, closed its doors after 25 years in the valley. The official opening will be held from 12.30pm to 3pm.
