Blenheim and Picton i-Sites take awards By Jacob Page Blenheim and Picton’s i-SITE visitor centres in Picton and Blenheim were presented as the joint winners of ServiceIQ’s 2015 Staff Professional Development Award at the national i-SITE Conference in Whangarei last week. Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston says Marlborough’s i-SITE staff are on deck 364 days a year influencing visitors’ travel decisions and encouraging them to spend more time in the region. “Continued skills development and product knowledge is a high priority for Destination Marlborough. ington says it’s important to acknowledge the contribution that a commitment to continued education makes in the tourism visitor centres. The Picton and Blenheim i-SITEs won this year’s award for high levels of achievement in on-going education, with five staff in the last year gaining a range of national qualifications in tourism and retail, up to management level. The winners received vouchers covering the training costs for two staff to complete a National Certificate in Tourism Aotearoa Level 3 qualification. ServiceIQ is New Zealand’s official industry training organisation (ITO) for the aviation, hospitality, retail, travel, tourism and museum sectors.

Boneseed is being eradicated around the Marlborough Sounds.
Banishing boneseed from Marlborough The Marlborough District Council and Department of Conservation staff are once again tackling boneseed in the Marlborough Sounds in their long term goal to eradicate this weed from the district. Fast-growing and a prolific seeder, boneseed can rapidly replace native plants, and its dense thickets can also restrict people’s access to beaches. Introduced from South Africa as an ornamental garden plant, boneseed has been in New Zealand since the 1870s. It has become widespread in coastal habitats throughout the country. In Marlborough, scattered infestations exist in the Marlborough Sounds and on the Rarangi coast and it has been declared a “total control pest plant”. Large specimens can produce up to 50,000 seeds with seed remaining viable for up to 10 years.
Boneseed’s fruit is eaten by birds and possums which spread the undigested seed. The weed programme has been occurring annually since 2001, and DOC ranger Johnny Joseph is pleased with the low number of plants they have seen this year. “It looks like we are finally getting on top of this weed with very few plants found where they used to be abundant. However, we still need to be vigilant in hunting out this weed, as it can grow in low light under dense vegetation and can colonise a large area unnoticed”. If you think you have this weed on your property please call the Marlborough District Council on 5207400 and biosecurity officers will assist you in removing it. September is the perfect time to find this weed as the bright yellow flowers easily identify it.
