signs By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim signwriting company has been rewarded on a national level, winning medals for two of its projects recently. BB Signs won gold and bronze medals at the New Zealand Sign and Display Awards in Rotorua last weekend. BB Signs owner Brian Benseman took gold for signwriting a 1932 Ford Delivery, his first gold in his preferred signwriting category. He says he was excited and surprised when his name was called. “You don’t want to hear that (what I said)… the lady could tell I was a little bit happy. “I didn’t expect it. We had very good stuff in the competition this year but we didn’t expect that one to win.” Continued page 2.

Police seize 25kg of cannabis Marlborough Police have recovered 25kg of cannabis from a 55ft yacht moored at Waikawa Bay. Two search warrants were executed on Friday in relation to the operation. One was at a Christchurch address and the second was on the yacht.
More than 25kg of cannabis was found on board the yacht, along with a taser. The yacht has been seized, along with two smaller vessels and a vehicle. A 45-year-old man was arrested on board the yacht. A 51-year-old man was arrested in Picton and the 64-year-old
owner of the yacht was arrested in Christchurch. All three have been remanded in custody on charges of cultivating cannabis, possession of equipment to cultivate cannabis and possession of cannabis for supply. The 45 year old and the 51 year old will appear in the
Blenheim District Court today and the 64 year old will appear on 7 May. Marlborough Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham says the quantity and quality of the cannabis recovered all pointed towards the men being involved in well organised commercial activity.

The sign, which says ‘Bossamans Deliveries,’ is Woodfine’s tribute to his dog. “It’s an even better thing to do it for really nice customers. It’s been even more of a buzz to ring and tell them,” Brian says. “You don’t signwrite vehicles much anymore. It’s very rare. “My shoulders ached but it was cool. You don’t get stressed signwriting as you do using a computer.” BB Signs employee Adam Lonergan also took home a medal, winning bronze in the illumination category. He lit up an antique ‘bar’ sign for use by local company Vintage Events. “We have a rule with the boys – if they see a job they think is really cool we just let them go,” Brian says. The gold is BB Signs’s first since 2008, and follows on from two bronze medals in each of the last two years. Brian says even after 35 years in the trade, the medals give him a buzz. “You come back all enthusiastic. You want to do something cool.”

Roof strengthened for earthquakes By Jacob Page New World Blenheim is strengthening its roof against earthquakes. Owner operator Ashley Shore says scaffold will be seen around the store for the next five to six weeks as new bracing is put in to the ceiling to ensure it is more capable of handling earthquakes. The work has been scheduled since the Seddon earthquake of 2013 and is part
of many moves the store is taking to increase shopper safety. “A lot of the things we are trying to incorporate are things that were used in Christchurch following their earthquakes.” Ashley says they have incorporated transparent thermoplastic fronts to some of their more perishable and glass items like jam jars, also there are extra shelves
to minimise the need for stacking. Wiring has also been introduced to the front of the wine section which means glass is less likely to fall and break and cause danger to customers. “It’s all about shopper safety,” Ashley says. “If there is less glass on the floor then there is less of an issue for customers and we can keep trading.

Marlborough Express general manager Vanessa Watson is set to leave the paper in May. Watson confirmed she was leaving as parent company Fairfax continues to restructure its newsrooms and business across New Zealand. The former Express advertising manager replaced Roger Rose as general manager in July 2011 almost 30 years after joining the company as a receptionist. It is understood Fairfax will be changing the way their provincial newspapers are led and those changes are likely to happen over the next few months.
Netball to move ‘ASAP’ - Sowman By Jacob Page Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman wants netball to be at Lansdowne Park from next season. Marlborough District Council’s assets and services committee on Tuesday agreed with a study that suggested the current home of rugby was the best option to future-proof the game. It beat out present location of Horton Park. It is understood to need money spent to upgrade courts and another alternative site at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. The Lansdowne Park move would involve the construction of 15 new courts at Lansdowne Park, with three covered courts and three plexipave courts. The cost of the development at Lansdowne Park
was $1.48 million without covered courts. The price tag would double to install covered courts. Sowman says with the Horton Park courts needing hundreds of thousands of dollars spent to maintain them, he was hopeful of making this netball season the last at the site. “At the moment the move is pencilled in for 2022 but that’s too far away for my liking and I’ve asked council staff to see if that can be looked at. “It doesn’t seem right to spend money on the Horton Park courts when that money could be spent on the move instead. Sowman says if they can sell the land that would be money that could be spent on the new courts and would make the move cheaper.

Workers move in Workers have begun to shift into Blenheim’s new health hub on Queen Street this week. About 70 workers from the Primary Health Organisation, Public Health, Child Development Services and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, started to move in on Tuesday. The building was officially opened by Prime Minister John Key late last month.
Roadshow comes to town To mark the release of a fleet of new Ford vehicles the company is holding a Blue Oval Roadshow in Blenheim this week. The event is being held at Alan Scott Wines today and tomorrow, from 10am-3pm. It will run through 2015, travelling thorugh the North Island in the second half of the year. By Adam Poulopoulos The Marlborough Vintners Hotel and Forrest Wines are joining forces to host a breakfast for both pink ribbon awareness and the region’s mothers. The pink ribbon breakfast will be held on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, from 9:30-noon at Marlborough Vintners. An auction, including prizes like dinner for two at Marlborough Vintners, bottles of Forrest wine and flights and accommodation for a weekend for two in Wellington, will be held on the day. Marlborough Vintners Hotel general manager Tracy Purcell says they are aiming to raise $2000 for the New Zealand
Breast Cancer Foundation at the event. She says all are welcome to attend. “It’s not just for women, it’s for husbands and sons too. “It’s something to do for Mother’s Day and it’s raising money for a good cause.” Tracy says Marlborough Vintners and Forrest will consider hosting more events in the future if the breakfast is well-supported. Nearly half of the $39 ticket fee goes to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Donations for St Mark’s Society Life Education Trust By Adam Poulopoulos The Blenheim South Rotary donated a combined $24,000 in funds at a dinner this week. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre St Mark’s Society received $15,000, while children’s education charity Life Education Trust received $9000. The funds were presented at a rotary dinner at the Scenic Hotel on Tuesday night. Rotary president Peter Edwards says the organisation wanted to help those in need at both ends of the age spectrum. “To use the words of the Life Education Trust, we’re helping people to make better choices. “We’re partly looking at those who have fallen off the wagon at
the top end, and the Life Education Trust encourages young people to make good choices.” The funds were raised at last year’s annual rotary dinner, which about 300 people attended. St Mark’s Society chairman John Inder says the group will be using their funds to create a multi-functional room for the centre, including office space, and space for group therapy and lectures. Work on the room, which is part of a wider site refurbishment, is set to begin next year. Life Education Trust chairperson Rob Simcic says their funds will go towards refurbishing the inside of their mobile van.

Why river weed is left to flourish From time to time members of the public express concern about the amount of weed they can see in our town waterways. Council is responsible for these rivers within the urban boundaries and it’s a finely balanced matter; maintaining the ecology of the waterways while ensuring there’s sufficient drainage. Keeping the waterways ‘clean’ means removing the vegetation that fish and invertebrates depend upon; Marlborough’s whitebait, for example, relies on these vegetation beds for their food - the small invertebrates that
feed on river plants. However if our Rivers team believes the weed has become so dense that it’s going to affect the river flows then action is taken. If there’s a risk of raising water levels, affecting the gravity drainage from the Taylor’s tributary creeks or if silt is building up and diverting the flow into vulnerable sections of riverbank then some weed will be cleared. At present most of the weed in the Taylor River above Hutcheson Street is growing in the silts and gravels of shallow water. It’s being left for as long as possible for
the sake of the fish life but our Rivers team says the thickest parts will probably have to be weed-raked before winter. Downstream of Hutcheson Street through town to Raupo, weeds are sprayed once or twice a year and beyond that, in the lower Opawa River, the
waterway is cleared three or four times a year with the weedcutter boat. Our water scientists remind us regularly that a clearly visible riverbed is not necessarily the sign of a healthy river and river vegetation is an important part of the river lifecycle.
Change proposed to Council’s Development Contributions Policy New residential, commercial, retail or industrial developments incur a development contribution levy. This helps meet the cost that new developments place on infrastructure and demand for Council services such as roading, water supply, waste water and reserves and community facilities. Council has reviewed its Development Contributions Policy to comply with recent amendments to the Local
Government Act 2002. Development contributions may be levied on those undertaking development so they pay a fair and proportional share of the costs incurred supporting
that growth. Over recent years Council has decided not to recover the full costs incurred by developments with a view to stimulating growth. Significant economic growth has now occurred and Council is looking to recover a greater portion of growth related costs from developers. This would mean that the portion of ratepayer funding needed to meet development costs will reduce.

Council will meet the immediate cost for approved home insulation products and the installation charges - which you then pay back over a nineyear term through a targeted homeowner property rate. The arrangement includes a charge for interest, administration and GST on all costs.

Stop bank where ? Looked with interest at the 4 conceptual designs of the proposed Taylor River precinct printed in your paper. Look lovely but did anyone else notice the complete absence of the stop bank? Grassed area and buildings all seem to be shown at river level. Will the new library be pleased to have its first floor flooded every winter?
Speeding car Reading your road safety article in weds paper reminded me of an incident on Friday night. Our family were walking back to our car from the Anzac service. It was about 6.55pm. We stopped at the pedestrian crossing on High st just past the roundabout. There were no cars so we stepped out and walked across. Our boys ran ahead of us and we were all surprised by a speeding Dominoes Pizza car who zoomed up the road from town & straight through the crossing, only closely missing our boys. The car seemed to come from nowhere, was speeding, did not slow down when going thru roundabout & didnt notice us even after it nearly knocked us all down. Cars please slow down & look when approaching crossings. Dominoes Pizza, please teach your drivers to be more careful.

Dancing in Havelock A group of Havelock kids have an extra spring in their step thanks to a community project bringing dance classes to the town. Local charitable trust Havelock Vision 2020 has organised weekly classes for children aged five to 17, which began in February. So far, about 30 people have been attending the after-school Wednesday classes in the Havelock Town Hall run by Star Dance Academy. They are learning dance styles including hip hop and salsa. Havelock Vision 2020 community liaison officer/ office manager Janet Brownson says they have been trying to get a dance instructor to Havelock for several years, but financial constraints had not made it viable until now. She says the classes have been a hit. “The hall is next door to the building where I work and I can’t resist going in there every Wednesday just to see the smiles on those faces.” Since being formed in 2010 Havelock Vision 2020 has been involved in several initiatives, including this $11,000 project, forming a monthly newsletter and radio station, holding an annual expo and bonfire night and more. A $5000 Kiwisport grant from Sport Tasman has helped the dance classes get off the ground.

One of my best holidays was... When I was travelling on my OE through France I lived with a family and worked in their vineyard. I got to press grapes with my feet which were red for days.
My guilty TV pleasure is... Coronation Street. I’ve been watching it all my life and feel that somehow I am related to them.

I’m inspired by... The fun group of volunteers that support us at Alzheimers Marlborough. They have a wide variety of backgrounds but they are all there because they have big hearts and want to help. What’s one thing that you’ll never throw away? My late mother’s letters – she had the most beautiful handwriting and they are a tangible reminder of her.
Who would you love to have a meal with? Karl Marx, Ghandi, Albert Eilstein and Richie McCaw. The first three because they were all inspiration leaders for social justice and Ritchie because he’s gorgeous.

What would you spend your last $100 on? My children, Jack and Lilly because they are the best.
What’s next on your wish list? I brought myself a new sewing machine and currently doing a sewing course in an effort to learn how to use it.

Marlborough Anzac tribute By Adam Poulopoulos A Picton couple are using their European trip to visit the Gallipoli Peninsula, and are inviting Marlburians to give to their Anzac tribute. Robin and Olive Day will be leaving for Europe on Tuesday, May 5, and arrive at the Gallipoli Peninsula for a tour at the start of June. While there, they will place paper poppies donated by the Marlborough community at the base of the New Zealand memorial at Chunuk Bair. The bag is at Mikey’s Bar in Picton, where Robin works as a bartender. Marlburians are invited to drop their poppies off before Sunday, May 3,
when the bag will be packed away for the journey. Robin has never been to the peninsula, and says he is looking forward to it. “Olive has been there before…she said it would good for me to go and see me and I totally agree. “I’ve wanted to go for a while, but I needed a push. It seemed the logical thing to do.” Olive says all Marlburians can drop off their poppies. “Anyone who’d like us to take a poppy is more than welcome to contribute, and say hi to Robin if he’s working.” Robin and Olive return to Marlborough shortly after their visit to the peninsula. The Marlborough Civic Orchestra will be hoping to drum up interest when they play two shows this weekend. The orchestra will be performing ‘Autumn Encore’ with two shows, one tonight at 7:30pm and one tomorrow at 4pm. Both shows will be held at the Wesley Centre on Henry Street. The Marlborough Civic Orchestra was formed from the Marlborough Youth Orchestra in the middle of last year, and held their first concert, Upbeat, in September. In the lead-up to this weekend’s show, the orchestra held a workshop with violinist Jean-Francois Robert, the second time he was worked with the orchestra.

Squeaky clean Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The squeaky clean toothy grins of Mayfield Kindergarten children is testament to the importance of oral health programmes provided in Marlborough. On Wednesday an orientation was held with the Marlborough Kindergarten Association and their seven kindergartens, which saw the teachers participate in a ‘training the trainer’ session. The session was hosted by NMDHB Oral Health
Educator Esme Palliser, before the teachers visited the Blenheim Community Oral Health Clinic. Esme introduced a twoyear partnership toothbrushing programme and begins on May 18 which will see around 425 kindergarten children take part. The children will be provided with fluoride toothpaste and toothbrushes, and their brushing and oral care will be measured and monitored over time to asses behavioural change and improvements.
The results of this programme will then be measured against the same number of children elsewhere in the Top-of-the-South. “As you will know, Marlborough’s water is not fluoridated so this project is about improving oral health among our little ones. “When children are actively brushing their teeth at kindergarten, they are enthusiastic about doing it regularly at home too,” Esme says. Group kicks into gear By Adam Poulopoulos The co-organiser of the new Seddon Youth Group says her nephew moving in with her was the inspiration she needed to start it up. Tracy Davis and Phyllis Heard are the organisers of the new group, which meets every Friday night from 7-9pm at the Awatere Community Hall. About 10 teenagers attended the first meeting held last week. The group is aimed at 13-18 year-olds, and involves activities like crafts, cooking, sport, group challenges and movie nights. Boar breaking news, the hunt is on By Celeste Lodewyk It’s official, New Zealand’s largest pig hunting competition is back for 2015. The annual Boar Slaying Super Comp, organised and run by Hooked On Boars Magazine owners Matt and Lisa Willis, is back with a whole new format and lineup of prizes. Traditionally an annual event, Matt and Lisa took last year off from holding the competition to focus on their businesses and Matt’s new television programme ‘Hooked on the Outdoors’ on Country TV.
Due to the amount of inquiries from all around the country, Matt and Lisa can reveal that the competition will be held on July 9, 10 and 11. What they won’t reveal just yet are the major spot prizes, new sponsors and new venue. “We are really excited about how things are looking, especially with a whole new venue that is bigger, more accessible for families and in Blenheim,” Lisa says. By changing the competition days to Thursday, Friday and Saturday, hunters travelling from out of the region will have Sunday to

Record crop Timaru-based farmers, Warren and Joy Darling have entered the renowned book of Guinness World Records, after producing the world’s largest crop of barley, breaking a 25 year record. The couple produced a staggering 13.8 tonnes of barley per hectare, smashing the previous record of 12.2 tonnes, which has been held by a Scottish grower, Gordon Rennie of Stockton Park Ltd, since 1989. This is equivalent to the weight of more than 17,000 loaves of bread per hectare!

Wheeler out Highlanders and Tasman Makos lock Joe Wheeler has been ruled out of the rest of the Super Rugby season due to injury. Wheeler ruptured knee ligaments in last weekend’s loss to the Brumbies. He is expected to miss about two months.

Bournemouth’s boom For the first time in their 116-year history, AFC Bournemouth will play in the top flight of English football next season. The south coast club all-butconfirmed their promotion to English football’s top flight earlier this week after a 3-0 win over Bolton Wanderers. The result left them in the final automatic promotion place in the Championship, three points and 19 goals ahead of third-placed Middlesbrough with one game to play. The bedlam at the club’s Goldsands Stadium home ground after the Bolton game was great to see, but the euphoria was probably heightened by the financial austerity of the previous 20 years. Quinn Udy took silver in the under-17 boys’ competition at the recent Oceania Junior Squash Championships in Invercargill. Udy was one of seven Marlburians to compete at the tournament.
Bowls The Blenheim South team defeated a Clubs of Marlborough team 10-8 to win the local mixed fours Cresswell Trophy recently. Blenheim South has won the right to represent Marlborough in the zone final in Hokitika on July 4. The winner of the Zone final will earn a place in the National Mixed Fours event held at Upper Hutt on July 25th.

The 12-year-old is heading to the South Island Golden Gloves tournament in Christchurch on May 23 and 24, and the New Zealand Boxing Championships in Invercargill in October. Caeden, who weighs in at 38 kilograms, will be fighting in the cadet division at the Golden Gloves. He was the New Zealand mini cadet champion two years ago, but had to wait to turn 12 before he could compete in the Golden Gloves. He wants to make the New Zealand Junior Boxing Team after he turns 15, but his end goal is to move into mixed martial arts. Caeden is already combining Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training with his boxing commitments, and his father and boxing coach James Skipper sees a

Meg Hocquard and Tegan Williams have been named in the Tasman under-18 girls’ hockey squad. The squad will be trimmed back after a training camp is held in Nelson in the middle of next month. The team has tournaments in Christchurch and the Wairarapa in June, before nationals are held in Dunedin in early July.

I think in five to 10 years a lot of boxers will be doing MMA.” He says the discipline Caeden has developed can help him succeed. “Caeden’s not afraid to train hard. He’s not lazy. He’s been training in my men’s class since he was eight. “He will go along to any sort of training session to learn and listen.” Caeden has a Facebook page, ‘Caeden Skipper MMA,’ which has seen interest in him rise. Kickboxer Zane Hopman is sponsoring his trip to the Golden Gloves, while Tasman Makos and Chiefs hooker Quentin MacDonald and Main Event Apparel have also made contact.

Former Black Stick visits schools Former New Zealand hockey international and two-time Olympian Niniwa Roberts paid a visit to several schools around the Marlborough region as part of ANZ’s Olympic Schools Programme. Roberts visited St Mary’s School, Havelock School and Grovetown School on Wednesday, talking about the Olympic experience and the path she took to get there. For every home loan over $50,000 drawn down with ANZ’s programme, the connected school can earn 800 credits, or about $400, to spend with their school or get the chance to secure an Olympic Ambassador visit. So far ANZ has donated $21,600 worth of credit to 17 schools around the Marlborough region. Roberts played 146 times for the Black Sticks Women over an eight-year career, attending both the 2004 Athens Olympics and the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
