Protest march planned for pond Andrew Board

Supporters of Tahunanui’s Modellers Pond are preparing a protest march before delivering a petition of signatures to Nelson City Council in a bid to ensure the pond doesn’t get filled in. The Nelson Modellers Society has prepared a submission to the council and it will be

accompanied by petition forms, signed by thousands of Nelsonians. Supporters of the pond say they want to send the strongest possible message to councillors and, with widespread support, they hope a protest march will do that. The Modellers Pond, near Tahuna beach, has had severe algae problems since strong chemicals that were used to control it were

banned by the council. The council has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on investigations and attempted solutions to clean the pond, to no avail. Tracy Gibbs of the Nelson Modeller’s Society says they would like to see the bottom of the pond sealed with concrete and controlled with regular cleaning.

“It’s a community asset, it’s an icon. We don’t want to lose it. Councillors need to look at the economics, but sometimes life is more than economics.” She says whatever the council decides money will need to be spent, and she’d like to see that money go towards fixing

EXPERIENCE EFFICIENCY INTEGRITY Fibre broadband reaches halfway mark: More than 13,500 Nelson homes now have access to ultrafast broadband, although only 1300 have signed on for the new service. Chorus have now rolled out UFB fibre to 50 per cent of the region. Independent broadband monitoring service, TrueNet, say they are already starting to see congestion occurring on the UFB network, although not at levels high enough to slow things down. “I think they should spend the money and fix it up. There’s too few entertainment options for kids to go where people can do their hobbies.”

“I’m on the fence about that one. It would be nice to have the pond done up but if it’s going to cost $100,000s then I don’t know it’s worth it.”

“I think they should do it up. It’s in such a mess, everybody is doing such good work pulling those weeds out.”

“They should fill it in and turn it into a picnic area. It doesn’t seem to be used and the guys with the model boats are using Monaco.”

March planned for pond FROM PAGE 1 the problem. “We already have two playgrounds at the beach. The pond is something different that can be utilised.” Tracy says the other major issue for the council is the stormwater pipe from the Tahuna Hills that flows into the pond when water levels are high. “If they fill in the pond they’ll have to find somewhere else to put that pipe, and the reason they chose the pond in the first place is

that it was the safest.” Support to save the pond has been growing. Tracy says more than 1000 signatures have been collected at the pond alone and there are dozens more petition forms in businesses around Tahunanui, Nelson and Richmond. A Facebook page has also been set up and that has attracted 300 likes. She says a date for the march hasn’t been decided yet, but it will be before June 11 when their submission needs to be presented to council.

Community constable Peter Crins wants people to start locking their bikes after a recent spike in bike thefts. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Stolen bikes concern police Nelson police want bicycle riders to start locking their bikes as the number of bike thefts around the region increases. Community Constable Peter Crins says bikes are the most targeted and easily accessible stolen property in the Nelson Bays area and that 90 per cent of the bikes stolen are not secured. Although Peter didn’t have the latest figures for reported bike thefts, he says the number of stolen bikes that have been recovered by police is growing. “It’s a year-round problem and at the moment we have around 40 unclaimed stolen bikes at

the Nelson station and another 20 in Richmond,” Peter says. “People need to start securing their bikes and store them out of view to help prevent the thefts.” Peter also warns that bikes should be locked even if they are being left outside a shop for “just a few seconds”. “We had a $10,000 bike reported stolen recently. The person went into a cafe and left it outside and when they came out it was gone - it didn’t take long.” In addition, bikes owners should record the serial number of their bikes so that they could be identified if they were

stolen. “We have all these stolen bikes at the station but we can’t give them back if we can’t be certain who owns them. And we can’t just keep storing them because we’d run out of room, so they get auctioned off about every four months.” Peter suspects most of the stolen bikes are used by the thieves for a while and then discarded or sold. Peter is starting a low-key preventative campaign to try and reduce the number of bike thefts, working with Neighbourhood Support to promote the secure-your-bike message.

Bird is the word at poultry show Nelson poultry, pigeon and duck breeders had something to crow about after taking out most of the big prizes at the Nelson Poultry and Pigeon Club annual show, held at the Hope Hall over the weekend. Rai Valley’s Hartley Neal had a quacking good show, winning the Best Waterfowl with his Pekin duck as well as the Best Game Bantam with a light red male bird. It was the second success for Hartley in a week after winning the Best Game Bird with a Khaki Campbell at the West Coast Show last weekend. “I’ve only been showing for about 15 years and this is the best result I’ve ever had,” Hartley says. One of the show’s organisers, Pam Buschl, says Hartley’s champion Pekin was one of 125 ducks entered in the show, that also attracted 434 chickens, bantams and pigeons. Pam says the standard of entries in this year’s show was exceptionally high, reflecting all the hard work breeders had put into their entries. “We had really good breeding conditions back in July and August and that was apparent in the show,” Pam says. “The breeders have also put a lot of work into preparing their birds for the show.” David Dredge of Stoke won the Best Homer Pigeon, Laura Inglis of Mapua won the Best Junior Entry with her white Pekin Duck, and Pam and her husband Rodger won the Best Heavy Breed with their Australorp pullet. Nelson College student Cameron Taylor says he entered about 90 birds into the show. “Some people will start prepping their birds about two months before the show. They put their birds on different feeds and clean their toenails and heads, that sort of thing. It’s judged on everything from the toes to the beak, the head and the eyes, feathers and colouring.”

Pipe band drummer off to world's top event

Pipe band tenor drummer Tiffany Gilchrist has always dreamed of playing at the prestigious Pipe Band World Championships, but never imagined her turn would come so soon. At only 15 years old, Tiffany has been invited to join the Canadian based Simon Fraser University Senior Pipe Band, which has won the competitive grade one World Pipe Band Championships six times. She met Simon Fraser Univer-

sity Pipe Band lead drummer, Reid Maxwell, via Skype, when attending a New Zealand Youth Band practice session. Tiffany’s older brother, Callum, played in the band at the World Pipe Band Championships for the first time last year and Reid approached him to see if Tiffany would be interested in joining. The day after she returned from the New Zealand Youth Band camp, Reid contacted her father Bryce. “When I got home from school,

Dad said Reid Maxwell has asked if you would like to play with the band at the world championships, I was excited but also in shock, now that it has sunk in a little, it is a really good feeling and I am looking forward to going, but I am nervous at the same time as there is a lot of music to learn,” says Tiffany. To be able to practice with the band and meet the high standard, Tiffany will head over to Canada on June 10 to practice for two months prior to the world championships, which will be held in Glasgow on August 14 and 15. “It’s a great programme and we’re really pleased Garin and Nelson College joined in this year. It encourages and develops New Zealand’s next generation of business people and entrepreneurs.” Team I Spy won the challenge, developing a $40 portable tracking device that works on mobile phones which the judges thought was “innovative, with potential for future development and opportunities”. The team members were Brooke Gill, Jade Scandrett-Huriwai, Mitchell Trow and Jordan Williamson of Waimea College, Shannon Norton and Jessica Stock of Garin College and Rafe Charles and Sam Christian of Nelson College. I Spy members each won a Waimea College pen and Subway voucher. The programme was delivered by Greig and Marijke Caigou on behalf of Young Enterprise, and was judged by Robert Panzer, Tony Perkins, Susan Schuler and Sarah Holmes.

A solar-powered, life-proof cellphone case, a water-resistant sport’s spray and a mobile phone app for tracking, were just some of the innovative products researched, developed and marketed by teams of Nelson year 10 and 11 students in last week’s BP Business Challenge. Waimea College students have participated in the BP Business Challenge for the last three years, and this year were joined by students from Garin College and Nelson College. Ten teams of eight students completed the three-day practical workshop at Waimea College, creating a virtual company to develop a new product which they pitched to judges on the final day, on Friday. “It introduces secondary students to the world of business in a fun and engaging way,” Waimea College’s head of business and information systems, Yvonne Daly, says. “They all take different roles in the company and learn about research and development, finances, marketing, and how to work as a team.

Therapy turns into exhibition for artists

Marina McPherson, Phill Sigglekow and Finn Smith, with some of their artwork that will be on display at the Creative Lights exhibition, at the G-Space gallery at NMIT next week. All three artists go to Magenta Creative Space, for people with mental illness. Photo: Andrew Board.

Andrew Board For what started as therapy for three Nelson artists has led to an exhibition featuring their work. Phill Sigglekow, Finn Smith and Marina McPherson have all dealt with varying degrees of mental health illness, but art has proven to be a welcome distraction and inspiration for them. Next week, the three Magenta artists will have their work take centre stage at the Creative Lights exhibition at NMIT. The exhibition is being organised by NMIT arts and media students Petra Malkova and Jess Shirley at the G-Space and will open next Tuesday night, June 9. Magenta Creative Space is an art group for people with mental illness. It meets several times a week in a building at the back of Old St Johns on Hardy St. Phill Sigglekow was one of the first to use Magenta and he says it’s given him a creative outlet. “My experience in having a mental illness has been helped by painting. When I first started my paintings were very graphic and it showed a lot of pain and suffering, because that’s how I felt. But it’s amazing how it’s actually evolved into what it is now.” Phill paints superheroes almost exclusively. “I see their powers as uplifting for me and I respect their powers. I’ve found a good niche. I’ve sold quite a few works in my time.” Like Phill, Marina has also been a part of an exhibition before, but says she’s excited about this latest exhibition. “I did art at college but I didn’t get back into it until I went to Ngawhatu Hospital and I’ve enjoyed it since. My art is about contentment – it’s my middle ground, a place where I’m not high or low. I do it day-today to keep well.” Finn found art after a breakdown. “When I first broke down I felt quite isolated because a lot of my friends had moved overseas, so being able to talk to people online, get to know them and then draw their portraits helped. I got such great feedback that I had people asking me to draw them.” The three artists are great friends and say everyone is welcome to attend the exhibition. It will be open all day from June 10 to June 12.

If people coming out of Elms St cannot safely merge, they should turn left and then, at next roundabout, turn left to get on southbound motorway, or go right round the Saxton Rd intersection and back. For many years, the people coming out of the Salisbury School and St Paul's driveway, who have been unable to turn right have been turning left and going to the Champion Rd roundabout and back to safely merge at busy times. Carol Stewart.

Slower cars equal even smaller gaps in the traffic. It was bad enough that they removed the left turn merge lane. They need to make the right turn one longer for a start.. Try turning right out of Poutama Street when it's busy, damn near impossible cos it's 50kph and the cars are just bumper to bumper. Tristan Fish. Roundabout. Kathy Pantling. Turn left out of Elm St and go around the Saxon roundabout if you are going to Richmond in peak traffic. End of problem - use you head, drivers. Craig Anderson. They should have planned it better from the beginning, and had the exit onto Saxton Road. Craig Dodds. Again. Poor road design. There is an empty section there why not put a merging lane in only turning left out of Elm St. There use to bea merge there and it got painted out. I'm a truck driver, and picking trucks up from Heslops and trying to get out of there is so easy to go left, simple. Kevan Leslie. It's been like it since I was a kid. Think people just need to look properly. Not follow too close, either. This just sums up Nelson drivers. Nathan Wells. People just need to bloody drive to the conditions keep there eyes open and be more vigilant, we don't need any more lights or roundabouts. Jeff Mills. Half of Nelson connected to Ultra Fast Broadband: Don't do it. We connected to UFB. It's not faster. We have had troubles with our phone lines. And our chip driveway now has tarseal patches the length of it, and another tarseal patch where the drill bit broke and they had to dig it up. My parents phone has worked on and off for the last month since they got UFB. I would never recommend it. I think we were sold a lemon. In fact my iPad is slower as it can't cope. Diane Chandler. Agree with above, it is certainly not faster for us either, although ours was installed OK and we don't seem to have phone problems. Christine Roberts.

Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch has been more than just a home away from home for Nelson mum Jordan Huizinga and her two young sons, Ashton and Cooper - it has been a lifesaver. Jordan and her children have spent what seems like a lifetime at Ronald McDonald House since Cooper, aged four, was diagnosed with the rare disease Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), three years ago. Although the last three years have been physically and emotionally challenging for Jordan, she says it would have been almost impossible without the support of Ronald McDonald House. The charity’s four houses provide free accommodation and support for children up to age 21 and their families while they are in hospital, and Jordan says “they are amazing”. “It’s been a difficult time, but it would have been really stressful without Ronald McDonald. It was so nice coming back after a long day at the hospital and there’d be a dinner waiting for you. “The staff and volunteers are great and it was nice being surrounded by people who understand what you are going

Jordan says Ronald McDonald House provided such a supportive environment in their first seven-week stay, she didn’t want to come home to Nelson. “Ronald McDonald House was home away from home. It was a small, tidy apartment and they looked after us - it was so simple I didn’t want to go home and deal with all that other stuff.” Jordan is optimistic that Cooper’s three year medical journey, which was extendJordan Huizinga and her son ed after he was rediagnosed Cooper have been regulars at Ron- with LCH after the initial ald McDonald House in Christch- treatment, is almost over. Waimea, Wanderers to meet in final

The two dominate teams of Nelson club rugby over the past three seasons will once again square off in a battle for Tasman supremacy. Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers were already guaranteed a place in the Tasman Trophy final before last weekend’s games, but both warmed up in the best possible way, with big wins. The Tasman Trophy involves all senior club teams from Nelson and Marlborough. The final will double as a Nelson Bays club competition match, so won't be played until June 13. Waimea have been undefeated all season and continued that good form at Trafalgar Park on Friday night, beating Central 60-23. Wanderers have lost two club finals in a row to Waimea and will be hungry for redemption. They beat Harlequins 60-20 in Brightwater on Saturday. In other Tasman Trophy games, Marist beat Renwick 83-13, Nelson beat Waitohi 30-10 and Stoke beat Moutere 39-15

Tough tournament for rep netballers Carol Cook

Coach Mandy Whiting, far right, with the Russells Curtains and Blinds Nelson under 17 representative team in Wellington over the weekend. The team had a mixed weekend but gained valuable experience.

Netball Reporter editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz Nelson was 7-15 in arrears at half time against Kapiti, however a number of positional changes worked wonders. Taylah Kirker and Natasha Bannister teamed up to present a formidable duo in the defensive circle, while Demi Woolley and Kalyssa Rasmussen were on-song in the offensive circle. Nelson lost 22- 23. Nelson was seeded fourth in their pool, on goal differential, and met Marlborough in their first crossover game, which they lost. In the play off for seventh and eighth, Nelson lost to Hawkes Bay 25- 28 after being up 14-11 at the break. While Poppy came in for praise from her coach, so to did Natasha who had a great tournament. Shooter Kalyssa worked hard throughout, and shot in excess of 80 per cent. Courtney Lott was the powerhouse through the mid court, as she kept going and going. Tali Uia was Nelson’s most improved player – coach Whiting, said she was a quick learner and her performances were rewarded with her selection in the tournament team. Nelson’s next outing will be the Top of the South Tournament in Blenheim in three weeks, with their New Zealand Tournament in Mt Maunganui in July.

Russells Curtains Nelson Under 17 representative team travelled to Wellington to compete at the Marj Jenden Tournament over the weekend. While the team has had a fairly limited build up, the tournament is used to test their skills against the North Island teams and generally work on gelling their combinations. In their opening game, Nelson were one goal down with a minute to go against Kapi Mana, however they ended the game on the wrong side of the ledger – going down 19-23. Nelson learnt from their previous game when they met Wellington Gold. The game was tight throughout, however the girls kept their heads to the final whistle. With the score tied, Wellington turned the ball over, however Nelson worked hard to regain possession and convert to win the game 20-19. Nelson did not have their best performance against Wanganui and were beaten 19-25. Wairarapa were not as strong as previous opposition, however Nelson played good structured netball to dominate all facets of play to win 40-6. Coach Mandy Whiting said the margin was the largest of the tournament and she was able to give good court time minutes to all her roster. Nelson lost their inspirational captain, Poppy Restieaux, with an ankle injury and her leadership was missed on court.
