300 apply for Warehouse jobs

Three hundred people have applied to work at The Warehouse in Richmond, however most of the job hunters will be let down. The Warehouse will employ around 70 team members at its peak for the store and Simon Turner, CEO of The Warehouse,

confirmed that 300 people had applied for jobs at the store but they are no longer looking to recruit staff. Five hundred people applied for jobs at Kmart, with 90 of those getting work when the store opened. Their staffing roll has since lowered to between 70 and 60. The 3500m2 The Warehouse store will

The new Warehouse building. open on Queen St on August 28, and all of the building work is on track for that date.

The Warehouse will be part of the Gibbons development project which also includes Kmart, Couplands, Benge & Co, Columbus Coffee and Aki Sushi. There will also be another yet-be-announced retailer on site. Simon says the company was attracted to Richmond as it is “one of New Zealand’s fastest growing regions.”

“No, it’s not going to change my shopping habits. We’ll go to the local one instead of the one in Nelson.”

“I’ll be still shopping at the mall here. I think it’s a great idea. I had to go into the Warehouse yesterday but if it had been here I definitely wouldn’t have gone into Nelson.”

“I will use it a bit. I like it for tshirts and things. I would certainly use it, in fact I can’t wait. Briscoes and the Warehouse would be the only reason we’d go into Nelson really.”

“Yeah I guess we are. I suppose it’s good to get Richmond up and going, it’s going to bring more people to Richmond.”

Saving Tadmor’s historic church Stolen fuel Tadmor residents are trying to buy back their 100 year old church and cemetery, before it’s sold and turned into a house. The residents – most of them are farmers – formed the Tadmor Church Society and are hoping to raise $35,000 in order to keep the church and burial ground open to the community. The church services stopped about 20 years ago, and the building has predominantly been used for weddings and funerals since then. It’s currently owned by the Anglican Diocesan Trust who received an offer from a potential buyer. But, with some public pressure, they have agreed to sell it to the society if they can raise $35,000 before October. If it is ever on-sold, they will have to come up with a further

$60,000 which makes up the current market value. The society has already managed to raise $15,000 and chairman Bruce Moffitt, whose grandfather donated the land which the church is built on in 1914, wants it to remain in the community. “Originally the land was given to them by my grandparents. The people donated all of the materials and everything to build the church, so it belongs to the community and it’s a pity we’ve got to buy it back,” he says. “A lot of people are still being buried in the cemetery and we want to keep it operating. We want to make sure people with relatives buried there

can still visit.” Bruce is happy with how the fundraising effort is going, and the society was buoyed by a recent fundraising motorcycle ride with the Nelson Motorcycle Club which raised $2235. “We hope we can get to our target. We sent out over 100 letters to individuals who have shown an interest to give us a donation so we’re waiting for some of those to come in now. We’re nearly halfway there so we just need some support.” After they have completed the purchase, the residents and the society plan to hold a special service and a celebration to mark the church’s 100 year anniversary. To enquire about supporting the church, phone Bruce on 03 522 3039.

worries police Police are very concerned about the number and frequency of fuel thefts from properties in the Nelson Bays area in recent months, and the lengths offenders seem prepared to go to. Between April 1 and July 2, there were 50 fuel thefts reported from properties between Richmond and Motueka. The incidents have included offenders forcing entry into enclosed yards, siphoning industrial machinery such as diggers parked on the roadside and siphoning from farm vehicles, farm storage

tanks and cars. Fuel tanks have also been taken from boats. In the most recent incident, police believe the offenders may have been disturbed by a property owner's dog in the early hours of Thursday morning while they were attempting to steal diesel at Hope. Cans of diesel were found hidden in a hedge and the family's labrador was found dead nearby. Sergeant Dave Prentice says police would like to speak to anyone who has information about people involved in this type of offending.

Families make most of Rainbow snow Alicia Burrow It was a bluebird day at the More FM Rainbow Family Snow Day over the weekend. Delighted children gathered around the games tent for snow bulls-eye, lolly scrambles, sledding, and tug of war games, at Rainbow Ski Area. The weather also made for optimal snow machine conditions, and vice chair of the ski area, Hamish Neill, says punters enjoyed the most manmade snow ever created there, due to the combination of cold nights and fine days.

“A bonus, because it’s more durable than natural snow and as a result more people come up,” he explains. And more people did go up, says marketing and events liaison Georgie Tudor-Jones. “Excluding member cardholders which we have sold a lot of, we’ve sold over a hundred more passes against this time last year.” Weekend visitor Gavin Beatie says Rainbow Ski Area is a great place for groups of families to come because the layout makes it easy to keep track of children.

Hamish says they’re hoping the season kicks on from the good start they’ve had and that comes down to the weather. “A good snowfall at the end of July sets the season up, and, if this weekend is anything to go by, it’s already happening” says Hamish. The timing of this year’s good weather couldn’t be better as it coincides with Rainbow Sports Club’s 10th year celebration of owning and operating Rainbow Ski Area. The next event to look forward to is the Summit Batty Rainbow Club Champs on August 9.

Rocks Rd plan goes public Blessing for an already ‘very good’ fishing season Nelsonians can have their say about the proposed promenade along Rocks Rd after Nelson City councillors unanimously agreed to send two concepts out for consultation. But that’s where the agreement on the plans ended, with several councillors voicing their opposition to it, saying the road is too busy and dangerous for a cycling walkway to work effectively. The promenade could see a three to four metre wide pathway on the sea side of Rocks Rd that could be used by cyclists, walkers and jog-

gers. Both of the options going out for consultation will see a loss of car parks and the introduction of five pedestrian crossings along the road, with the one opposite Guytons to have traffic lights. Concept One will cost between $9-13 million, with $2-3 million of that from the council, the rest from NZTA. For Concept Two, the estimated cost is approximately $11-15 million, with $2.5-3.5 million from the council. The feedback period opens on July 24 and closes on August 25.

Nelson’s fishing community paused for a few hours on Saturday to remember the lives of those who have been lost at sea, but then it was all hands back on deck as the hoki season gets off to another “very good” start. A big crowd lined the Port Nelson waterfront for Saturday’s annual Blessing of the Fleet, which is both a poignant memorial and a blessing for people from around the NelsonTasman region who will work at sea this season. The annual ceremony started on Friday night with a fireworks display and continued on Saturday when a fleet of fishing boats, offshore from Wakefield Quay, was blessed by Bishop Richard Ellena, Reverend Jeff Cotton and Father David Gruschow. The blessing was followed by a fresh fish market and a display by the Coastguard while spectators enjoyed fish and chips cooked by Nelson Rotarians. Seafarers Memorial Trust chairman and event organiser, Mike Smith, says he was delighted with the ceremony, which is not only a time for people to reflect on the tragedy

I believe that 26 per cent of the working population are involved in the fishing industry.” Although the blessing marks the official start of the hoki season, Sealord fishing general manager Doug Paulin says they have been catching hoki offshore from the West Coast for the last month. Sealord has three factory trawlers and three chartered Ukrainian vessels fishing for hoki and Doug says they have had a great start to the season. Sealord has 344 sea-going staff

and 250 land-based staff working on the hoki season that is expected to continue until early or mid-September. Sealord has a quota for 43,000 tonnes of hoki and has purchased another 9000 tonnes of the total allowable commercial catch of 150,000 tonnes. Talley’s Nelson division manager Tony Hazlett says they already have three large vessels and “a heap of small inshore owner-operator boats” fishing for hoki off the West Coast. Talley’s has 135 people aboard the large trawlers and 430 landbased staff for the hoki season. “It’s looking very good for the future.”

TDC weighs up sugary drinks ban Sugary drinks will be off the menu at Nelson City Council events and venues, but Tasman District Council is undecided whether it will follow suit. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese made the announcement at the Local Government NZ conference earlier this week – making it the first council in New Zealand to impose such a ban. The sugar-free drinks policy means that all venues like Riverside Pool, Founders and the council buildings will be free of sugary drinks. As will events it manages, like the masked parade, Ecofest, Opera in the Park and Isel in Bloom.

NEWS in brief

Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Rachel says type two diabetes, childhood obesity and dental disease are major issues in New Zealand, and have a significant impact on our community. The announcement comes months after the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board became the first health board in the country to do the same. In July last year, Dr Robert Beaglehole, principal dental officer for the Nelson

Marlborough District Health Board, spoke with both councils, and told them a rise in obesity and teeth extractions could be prevented if sugary refreshments are no longer available at any event held on council property. “Last year we put to sleep almost 300 adults and children and took out a lot of their teeth, and that’s costing the DHB between $1million and $1.5million a year,” he said at the time. “The majority of the teeth were taken out because they were rotten, which was because of too many fizzy drinks and it’s totally preventable.” Last year Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne ruled out the ban, but this

week he says he was still weighing up the idea. “I’m still weighing it up and I think that Rob is wanting to have another chat with me. But at this stage we haven’t got definite plans to get into that space,” he says. Richard was not surprised by NCC’s decision and says it doesn’t put any pressure on TDC to follow. “We have to think our own process through. It doesn’t put any pressure on us but we will reconsider do we do it, or not.” Richard says the main reason for not imposing a ban comes down to the question of whether it should be a personal choice.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONFERENCE: More than 500 people are in Nelson for the annual Local Government New Zealand conference which ends today. The conference is being jointly hosted by Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council and was held at the Rutherford Hotel from Sunday. The theme this year was “powering economies and building vibrant communities”. NEW VENUE FOR ECOFEST: Ecofest is this year partnering with Growables gardening show at Founders Heritage Park to create a bumper day of “green” activities, products, services and produce for Nelsonians. Formerly held at the Trafalgar Centre, this year’s Ecofest has been repackaged to include a one day expo in both Nelson and Motueka, along with a series of interesting seminars and handson workshops. PEDESTRIAN HIT BY CAR NAMED: Police investigating a fatal crash on the Moutere Highway last Sunday evening have identified the pedestrian who was killed. He was Thomas Kochwasser, aged 40, of Redwood Valley. His family in Germany have been advised of his death.

The Wakefield Country Players are about to warm up winter with celebrated New Zealand playwright Roger Hall’s Cinderella, a traditional pantomime. But is this take really traditional? Not quite, according to the cast behind it. They’ve described their version as a “Kiwi retelling of the legend, with King John Key, Cinderella as an Intrepid Journeys wannabe and two captivatingly vile ugly sisters whose budget

shopping tastes are sartorially spectacular.” Throw in a fairy godmother whose wands only work with Wi-Fi, a pair of WOOFers, a disarmingly modest Prince (George, of course), the (very) odd villain or two, and they believe they’ve created hilarity and mayhem to warm the coldest winter night. The cast and crew have been hard at work for three months to bring Cinderella to life in their ever-popular dinner thea-

tre format at the Wakefield village hall, from Friday, July 25 to Saturday, August 2. All Friday and Saturday performances are dinner/theatre, so event-goers can enjoy a fully-catered midwinter feast and show for $38 per person. Wednesday performance is picnic night, so you can bring your own food and drinks while tea and coffee are supplied. Those tickets are $15. For bookings, contact Dixie McDonald, phone 541 8862.

Nelson Symphony Orchestra: We’ll make you smile with $10k The entries are rolling in for the Car Company Charity Drive, with dozens already in before the deadline on August 22. Each week, Waimea Weekly will be speaking with an entrant about what the $10,000 would do for their group. This week we speak with the Nelson Symphony Orchestra. For more than 40 years the Nelson Symphony Orchestra has been delighting the senses of appreciative Nelson audiences and this week it will again take centre stage – although not at its traditional home. For the vast majority of its history, the Nelson School of Music has been home to the orchestra. But with the earthquake status of the school of music meaning it remains closed, the orchestra has been practising at Old St John’s on Nelson’s Hardy St, and it’s there that they will perform this Saturday’s concert. That would bring enjoyment to the people of Nelson, because they are the ones who will come along and enjoy the music of these international artists.” The orchestra currently has between 40 and 50 members and this week they’ll be rehearsing two hours every day until the

concert on Saturday night. Pam says the concert will be a special performance of music written by those who died in World War One. “The music is not particularly well known, but it is lovely and written by men who gave their lives.” The concert will also feature some poetry written by soldiers and starts at 7.30pm in Old St John’s this Saturday night. For charities to be in with a chance of winning the $10,000 from the Car Company, they just need to pick up an application form from any Car Company yard in Nelson, Tahuna or Richmond, or visit www.carcompanynelson.co.nz. Ford lovers to gather for founder’s birthday Owen Hannah has always been a Ford man – he once owned an Anglia, and now he’s on to his third Zephyr, a 1965 Mark 3. But it’s not the look that appeals to Owen, and it’s not what is under the hood either. It’s the fact they make great towing cars. “When it was my main car I was towing a caravan. I’ve driven through both the North and South Island and when I had a stockcar I took that with it, too. It was a real workhorse back in its day,” the Richmond man explains. “But now it takes its place in the shed and when I go on Ford runs and other special trips.” And the next special occasion will be this Sunday, with the Nelson Classic Ford Car Club, who annually celebrate Henry Ford’s birthday with a large get-together at Rabbit

Island. “We have a massive turnout, especially if it’s a beautiful day. The number of cars is just incredible, some real old Model As, and there are quite a few Mark 2 and 3 Zephyrs, as well.” The event is open to the public from 11am until 2:30pm, and anyone with a Ford is welcome to bring it along, and have a slice of the birthday cake. There will spot prizes and a barbeque, and event-goers are also encouraged to “bring lunch and make a day of it”. For further information, contact club president Diane Kemp on 545 0325.

It’s sing-a-long with Philip Steans this Saturday night it will be great fun

Dog walkers well worth it: Gorgeous photo of my staffordshire Dexter and his friends on page 3 in this week’s edition. Thank you:-) Love, love the pet sitters. They do an amazing job. Worth every penny. Dexter has been going for walkies with them for almost two years. Dexter loves them and he’s such a lovely dog. Credits to Wendy Mackay and Lasma and the rest of the team. Highly recommended. Suzy Evans.

Light Nelson: Glad we went Saturday! Think it should go for no less than 3 days. I don’t mind making a gold coin donation either if that would help. Do think there was less to see than last year’s. Maybe because they were more spread out. Lacked the same effect and atmosphere. Don’t want to see it stop though. Nelson needs something like this in the winter. Suzy Andrew.

with it any longer. My 3 year old was not having fun. So we missed out on most of it. Diana Sim.

direction people should be going. Debbie Dawkins.

Didn’t get to go this year as were away, but, for all the effort the organisers etc put into it, thought it could easily run over two weekends and the week. Carol Edmonds.

Gold coin donation and a proper route. It wasn’t as good as last year but probably cause we couldn’t see half of it. Had one slightly grumpy bub by the end of it. Maybe drag it out over 4 days. Tristan Fish.

No wonder it was horrible. 30 000 people all going every which way a parental nightmare with toddlers. What lights we did actually see was pretty cool though! Ngaire Piggott. I KNEW it was gonna be mad busy, especially with the weather! It’s FREE! It’s family friendly, and it’s apparently amazing! What did people expect? Maybe a gold coin donation, or tickets needing to be purchased for the event might give a better forecast of how many people will go? Amiee Baker.

I think both...and have a route set out that everyone follows, so we all go the same way. Helen Gowland.

The place is amazing!! Given it’s school holidays, over a longer period would be better. Bridget Hobden.

Should be in one gate, out the other, instead of everyone going in all different directions. I went home because I just couldn’t deal

Larger venue. These people do an amazing job for a free event but was way too crowded. Maybe glow-in-dark arrows to show

Well, I thought Light Nelson was fantastic. Good on those people who stuck their neck out to organise such an event and good on those artists who spent hours to produce the magnificent work we saw. I know it was busy, but I can’t get over some people complaining about this fantastic FREE community event. Can’t wait for next LIMITED year’s. Via text.

Gary Neale of Brightwater Vineyards says he was thrilled with the results from the competition. “These wines have not been released yet and this is the first time either of them has been judged,” he says. “To receive gold and silver in their first show is very good indeed. Just a thought... What about turning off the internet two evenings a week? That might be too hard – why not try one evening a week? The gadgets that are meant to make our lives easier to manage and enable us to be more connected seem to create more isolation, both within and outside our households. In the school holidays, our family were able to go back and visit a community in the jungle on Santo Island of Vanuatu, where we lived for two years several years ago. During our visit we had no internet and so gadgets designed to make us connected didn’t work, and yet we were more connected to each other than normal. For us it was a time to catch up with friends. Each evening was spent with a different household, eating with them and remembering the past. On the evening we had our meal with the chief of the community, he invited everyone in the room to tell their story, before discussion moved to various social issues facing Vanuatu. It was a special night where we Jon Parkes, were all connected and St David's Prespresent to each other. byterian Church. At the end of each day, we as a family would retire to an area where we could sit on the floor and talk to each other. We talked and laughed and shared memories – and because there was little electricity and we were not connected to the internet – the talking was deeper and precious. In some way, our time was not too dissimilar to when any family goes on a camping holiday or tramping and people play various games during the evenings enjoying good banter. The thing is, everyone was connected and the interaction was very special. Our last evening was back in “town” in order to connect to international flights, and, seated around a table eating normal food, I asked the family what they enjoyed most about the past week. Everyone agreed it was the evenings where we as a family were truly connected together and fully present with each other, instead of some of us being glued to a smartphone or tablet or TV screen. The next day in the airport, even though we were sitting together, instead of being connected to each other, we were connected to the internet and no longer present to where we were sitting, and we lost something (that is hard to articulate). I’ve decided that one evening a week I’ll be internet free (and screen free). Not because internet or screens are wrong – but because relationships are the most important thing in life. Relationship with God and with each other are the most important things in this world.

Light Nelson likely to expand Until 30 Sept 2014. Time limits apply. *Wakatu carpark excluded

The trust behind Light Nelson will expand the event next year, creating more space to ensure it can cope with its rapidly growing demand. Around 40,000 people attended Light Nelson last weekend, with an incredible 30,000 of those trying to get into the Queens Gardens. Because wet weather forced

Friday night to be canned, it seems the majority of eventgoers waited until the last and clearest opportunity to go. That caused long queues throughout the gardens. Light Nelson Trust chair Brian Riley said that there was no way they expected 24,000 more people than the year before, and the event will expand

outside the Queens Gardens. “Absolutely. The fact we’ve had such a fantastic response and turnout means we are now fast tracking our vision to the future,” he says. That vision should see Light Nelson extend along the Maitai, through town and could even include parts of Tahunanui or around the port.

Winning a national award could open some new doors for Richmond business Waimea West Joinery. Alan and Kathy Gibb have been operating their business for 26 years but have never even entered a national competition. But that changed when their Laminex supplier Phil Thompson persuaded them put a large oak door they made for an Atawhai house into the Master Joiners Awards. And it was a case of first time lucky with Waimea West being presented with the Nelson Regional Award and the Herman Pacific Best Door or Window Award at the Master Joiner Awards dinner in New Plymouth late last month. “We haven’t entered anything like that before but we got talked into it by Phil. He thought the door was a real statement and suggested we enter so we did and we won.”

Waimea West Joinery’s; from left; Blake; Kathy and Alan Gibbs with the awards the joinery won at the Master Joiners annual awards. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Alan says the door’s made from imported American white oak and is 2.4 metres high by 1.2 metre wide and weighs around 120 kilograms. He says the client wanted a door that worked-in well with the wood and stone around the entranceway and Nelson architects Arthouse came up with a great design. “It took Daniel [Watson] and I

about 40 hours to build. American white oak is a perfect timber for a door because it’s really stable and has a nice grain.” The judges commented on the “excellent workmanship and effect on this large handcrafted entrance door”. Alan and Kathy employ nine staff at their Beach Rd joinery including their son Blake and daughter Rebecca.

You’ve nominated who you think does it best, now it’s time to vote. The 2014 New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards are the most prestigious local awards the industry has and recognises the best in the hospitality business. This year, hundreds of businesses and workers were nominated by people from Golden Bay to Murchison to Rai Valley, and everywhere in between. There was an overwhelming response so the finalists were narrowed down to the top in each category, based on the number of nominated votes. The awards are split into two categories – industry awards, which are judged by experts, and the people’s choice awards, voted and judged by you. So it’s important you have your say! Simply fill in who you want to win, cut out the form and drop it off to either newspaper office in Selwyn Pl, Nelson or Salisbury Rd, Richmond. Or send

it to Nelson Hospitality Awards, PO Box 503 Wellington. Voting will close at 12 noon on Friday 8 August, so get your entry form in before then. The winners will be announced at the biannual New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards event to be held on Monday 25 August, venue to be confirmed. Tickets will be on sale at Hardys Bar. The ticket price will be $65, which includes drinks served and a three course dinner.

You can vote in as many categories as you wish, only one vote per category. Voting closes Friday 8 August at 12 noon. Voting forms must be clipped from the paper, no photocopies accepted. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Sponsors, their employees and immediate families may vote but are ineligible to win a prize.

David, Page, Hazel and Sarah Stuart enjoy a lovely warm cup of vegetable soup at Pinegrove Kindergarten’s celebration of the Maori New Year and the kindergarten’s 16th birthday, and the blessing of a newly donated piece of land. We are currently in discussion with TDC to find a solution to the drainage issues with the carpark behind the shops and the village green, and are hopeful of coming up with a successful solution soon. We have recently received a complaint of pedestrians on footpaths around Brightwater being hit by cyclists. This relates to cyclists riding on the Ellis Street footpath. We would like to remind cyclists that it is illegal to ride bikes on footpaths. The late Roy Potter developed a great rambling garden on the banks of the Waiiti River at the Tomlinson Reserve and we have asked that it now be managed by the Reserve Division of the TDC. Also, out of respect for Roy’s hard work, a request has been made to place a plaque on the picnic table at Waimea West to record and acknowledge his dedication and good deeds. We hope you are all keeping nice

and warm during this winter weather. Andy McQueen Chairperson Brightwater Community Association Wednesday Morning Community Preschool Playgroup Raising children - It is one of the most important jobs you will do in your life. It has been said that it takes a village to bring children up and this is one of the reasons that we hold a Wednesday morning community play group at the Brightwater Community Anglican Church crèche building. This playgroup provides a time for children to play with all sorts of toys while parents can informally mix and meet new people. It is place where you can ask questions like, what do you do when …? or just have a pleasant morning talking to other adults. Playgroup begins at 10am and runs through to mid day.

New Show Home at 5 Fairose Drive, matic experience for the mother, father and those close to them, whether it is a result of still birth or miscarriage. The Brightwater Community Anglican Church is facilitating a remembrance service for people who have lost a child at any stage of pregnancy, at birth or in infancy, whether t occurred last week or decades ago. The service will give you the opportunity to stand

with other people ‘who know’ the pain of losing a child. The service is for women and men who have suffered loss, their children and their extended family and friends, whether the loss is recent or historic. The service will be held at St Pauls Church Hall, 68 Waimea West Rd, Brightwater on Sunday, 27 July at 3pm. Come and rejoice in your baby’s life, grieve and remember.

Snowden’s Bush in Brightwater is home to one of the few remaining lowland totara forests in the Nelson region. Snowden’s Bush This area, one of the few remaining treasures of the original bush cover typical of our district was owned by the Snowden family who lived in a cob house behind the bush. The cob house’s replacement became the residence of Mr and Mrs Len Gray and is now lived in by their granddaughter, Kylie O’Connell and her family. The Waimea County records of August 1920 show that a remit to a Conference of Local Bodies recommended that Snowden’s Bush be purchased for recreation pur Music and Rhythm On Monday mornings the Brightwater Community Anglican church hall resounds with upbeat music and the voices of preschoolers as they enjoy a half hour of music and fun, beginning at 10am. The children sing and do actions to a wide variety of songs while using equipment like the parachutes, ribbons, and noise making toys. These activities help the children develop gross and fine motor skills, language, imagination, mathematical and pre-reading skills, as well providing the opportunity for them to socialise with others. After all that hard work it is time for morning tea and a well earned play with the toys. By the time the last one leaves it is getting on towards lunch time and for the younger ones a well deserved nap. What a BUZZ If you had been at the church hall on Thursday afternoons (from 3:30-4:30pm) you would have been amazed at the number of children that just kept coming in. In terms two and three children in years 3 to 6 at school, turn up for the Buzz Club @ Brightwater after school club. BQD offers customers a fully-transparent building solution with an approach which gives their customers total flexibility throughout their entire project. Managing director David Horncastle jointly created the building management company to offer superior support and service in any home-build project, whether a new home or alteration. “The whole idea of BQD was to give total disclosure to customers and give them a better understanding of building to ensure pitfalls, like nonspecified general allocations [PC Sums] were removed. Customers get a total understanding of where their costs are, enabling them to make more-educated decisions, especially in the early stages of projects,” says David.

1pm - 4pm

Unexpected costs, lack of information and control, poor listening and communication, are all factors in a poorly-managed project, and everything BQD strives to get right. They have a one-stop-shop approach, and a process that is continually developed to benefit the customer and provide superior value for money. “We’re very structured in what we do and how we do it,” says David. “Right from the start, at the concept stage, everything is specified, everything is quoted, there’s no PC sums or guesstimates. With every job that we’ve completed, there’s always something that we learn and apply to the next job. We’re always evolving and making the BQD system better and better.”

Managing Director David Horncastle with Jo Managh and David Peacock are the team at BQD who take all the stress out of a building project. “At whatever stage people are up to, and even prior to purchasing a section, we can help customers through the process,” says David. Whether your home is still a far away vision in your mind or you have existing house plans, BQD can work with you and assist you with bring your project to life. If you’re starting a build from scratch, BQD will start by working through the client’s specific requirements as well as their budget, to get a design that is specific to them without the restrictions of a standard plan. “We can show customer’s plans of houses we’ve completed but they are the only plans we refer back to, apart from that it really is just starting from scratch and working with customer’s ideas and character, to produce a design that is uniquely them. It can be as economic, if not more, customising verses choosing from standard plans, and some-

times, with standard plans you have to compromise with something on a site that may not necessarily work as well as it could. By customising right from the start, everything is designed to suit the client’s project in its entirety, including lifestyle requirements, budget and the site itself. Building is a major investment, therefore, why compromise such an investment with a design that may not offer a true reflection of the owner and not offer the resale value that it should.” Once you have your plan or an existing house design, BQD will price your project through a tender system which can offer great savings or alternatively, deal direct with preferred contractors who have been involved in their show home (as shown in advertisement). Customers also have the flexibility to provide any friends and/or contractor names they would like to give the opportunity to work on their

BQD construction management allows customers active involvement in the build of their home or, alternatively, they can be completely hands-off. BQD tailor their services to meet customers’ requirements. “Everyone is different. They can be as involved as they like or as little as they like. A lot of our customers would generally like more involvement throughout the construction phase and the flexibility of our processes cater for this. We like our customer’s involvement because there are decisions to be made along the way and it’s about ensuring that customers have the ability and the opportunity to make these decisions and not have these made for them.”

Don‘t BuilD til you BQD. The BQD concept has proven itself time and time again in giving clients a comprehensive pricing analysis, total flexibility, budget control and complete disclosure throughout the entire process. “It’s a big undertaking to go into a project where you’re dealing with grey areas,” says David. “So it’s removing those grey areas and ensuring that cus-

tomers know exactly what they are getting and what the costs are.” Their clients’ financial security is also important, so there are no building deposits or predetermined lump sum payments. Instead, construction progress payments are due only on work that has been completed and customer’s money is paid directly to the contractor. “All invoices come through to us, we check them off, make sure that the job has been done and present them to the customer on a monthly basis for payment.” The last focus of BQD is their 180 day maintenance period, where any maintenance issues can be identified and rectified by tradesmen so you finish the process with a complete and perfect home. Hope for new choir Everyone has a voice inside them and Alice Robin just wants to bring them out. Her history with choral music has seen her lead and organise a number of choir groups and festivals in England, but after her move to New Zealand she formed a successful evening community choir which draws around 60 singers regularly to The Boathouse in Nelson. Now Alice is starting a new sister community choir in Hope. “If you sing at the end of the day you might be a bit tired after work, but in the morning, if you know that’s what you going do it’s fantastic. In England I had two choirs and they were both wonderful, but people were always there at the day one,” says Alice. The choir will be gathering in the youth hall at Hope community and everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the magic of creating music in a group. Alice encourages anyone who is even slightly interested to come along and give it a go. “You get a

Over time we develop ways of making our voices blend together, but no one will ever be criticised for their voice, as a group we’ll make the best sound we can.”

The new community choir starts on July 25 and will meet weekly on Friday mornings 10am to 12 noon in the Youth Hall at Hope Community Church, Ranzau Rd. Their repertoire of songs ranges from pop, soul and gospel to folk and funk, with ethnic songs from around the world as well as the occasional classical piece, so for more information call Alice on 553 0448 or email alice@leavesofgreen.co.nz

Go Organic Part-time Day/Night courses starting soon! Explore the latest trends in sustainable farming through a science-based approach to a wide range of organic techniques and systems. Ideal for lifestyle block owners, home gardeners and/or commercial growers, this course will provide key knowledge and skills required for organic growing. Learn to build ecosystems, promote biodiversity and increase soil and plant health, instead of relying on artificial fertilisers and poisonous sprays. Topics covered include organic philosophies, certification, soil management, soil food webs, composting, companion planting, crop rotation, green manures, weed control, pest and disease management, plant knowledge and an introduction to permaculture.

Some prior knowledge of horticulture and growing plants is recommended although keen beginners are invited to apply. Although this programme has a horticultural bias, pastoral farmers wishing to get an understanding of what organic farming is all about will also find this course of value. On successful completion you will be awarded a Certificate in Organic Horticulture (Level 3). Networking between organic growing enthusiasts is an added bonus to joining this course. Note: Minimum numbers required for course to commence.

For more information or to apply, contact us now!

This knowledge can be applied not only to food crops, but to the cultivation of any plants – from suburban gardens to pastures, orchards, shelter belts and woodlots. In addition to attending tutorials and workshops or field trips, students will need to complete practical and theory assignments in their own time.

Over the last few weeks or so the weather has hampered getting out fishing with few reports coming in, so I thought it might be a good chance to remind everyone of some basic safety precautions and how to develop your own critical checklist before heading out boating. Whenever you are going out on the water, make sure people are aware of where you are going and, more importantly, when you intend to be back. That way, friends and family won’t get unnecessarily worried and contact authorities causing in some cases, expensive and time consuming searches to be mounted. It pays to prepare a Two Minute form that has the details of your vessel, where you are going boating and when you are returning. Give it to someone who can contact the authorities if you don’t return by your scheduled time then someone can contact the Coastguard. Make sure you wear the appropriate clothing when going boating. Always wear a lifejacket when you go boating and always wear clothing that is appropriate for the conditions. A rule of thumb is that you should go for several layers of thinner clothing rather than one thick layer (thinner, multi layers trap air and retains heat better). You can always remove a layer if you get too warm. When going boating you must carry some form of communication device in case you get into difficulty. It is important when going boating that you carry at least two forms of communication. You never know when you might need to contact someone in a hurry. By far the best form of communication is a marine VHF radio. When you

use a VHF radio it can be picked up by a range of different people at once, whereas a cellphone will only be picked up by one person. If you have a cellphone, then make sure that it is in a waterproof plastic bag. You should also carry flares in a waterproof canister to make it easier for people to find you. When going boating, it’s always a good idea to make sure your crew knows where all the safety equipment is and what they should do in case of an emergency. Check the weather forecast and if in doubt don’t go out. Also, a really good idea is to develop a pre-launch checklist for your boat. It’s easy to forget or miss things when you go boating. You get caught up in the excitement of a day out on the water. There are lots of things you need to remember – such as ensuring you have enough food for the day, selecting the right sort of bait and making sure you know the route to get to where you’re going. Why not develop a checklist of the critical things that you need to do before the boat goes in the water? Do you have enough fuel? Is there a lifejacket on board for every person on the boat? Do you have at least two forms of communications on board, such as a VHF radio, a fully-charged mobile phone or flares? Have you inserted the bungs? Get your checklist printed and laminated, then stick it to your dashboard where you can’t avoid seeing it. Before you launch, satisfy yourself that you’ve completed all the checks. This will result in a safe and pleasant day’s boating with no hidden surprises.

A Gareth Palmer penalty was all that separated the two teams, as Wanderers sealed the Car Company division two rugby championship in extra-time. In front of thousands of spectators at Trafalgar Park, Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers gave coach Aaron Everitt and captain Callum Rogers the perfect send-off, winning the final 20-17 against rivals Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys, and ensuring they end the season with a perfect 12-from-12 record. Wanderers had led 12-0 at half time before Waimea made a valiant comeback in the second half, tying the game 17-17 after 80 minutes. Callum, who will move to Queenstown after 17 years with the club, was thrilled with his team’s ef-

forts all season after they finished back in eighth last year. “We’ve really worked hard and come back to the number one spot. The lads have done really well,” he says. “We’ve had quite a lot of young blood come through and we’ve had a new lease of life, I think. Callum says they were pretty confident heading into the game with the knowledge that they had done the job against Waimea previously this season, but they knew their perfect round robin would’ve counted for nought had they lost the final. “There was quite a lot of finger-nail biting there in the last couple of minutes but the boys really dug in, even though they were hurting. It was definitely the hardest game we’ve played all year.”

SG Congratulations on the win from Tony, Jerome and the team at the Star & Garter Proud to be a major sponsor of the Waimea Old Boys

The celebrations continued well into the weekend after Waimea Old Boys claimed their second rugby championship in a row. They hadn’t beaten Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers in their two previous attempts this season, but Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys won when it really mattered, sealing a 41-12 victory in front of thousands of spectators at a sunny Trafalgar Park. pretty special for the club and heaped praise on the coaches for the work they’ve done throughout the season. “They’ve kept us pretty grounded throughout the whole year, and they’re pretty honest and know how to get the best out of us, and I think that gave us an edge in the end,” he says. Waimea Old Boys were virtually at full strength for the game — the only key absentee being Chiefs’ wing James Lowe, who captained the team last year. And it

was some of the big name players who stood up in the final, with man of the match Kaide Whiting scoring twice, while first five Marty Banks ripped through the Wanderers backline all afternoon and Billy Guyton kept the points ticking over — he ended the game with seven successful shots on goal. In the forwards, players like Peter Samu, Jeff Lepa and Dale Russ made their physical presence felt. Ben says there was a maturity in the group now, and there was plenty of depth on the bench — two key facets to their squad. Co-coach Mark Milne was really rapt with the performance. “We knew they’d come back after last year but we’re rapt with how we played, we were pretty clinical in the end,” he says. President Duane Whiting wanted to congratulate all the Waimea teams for getting into the finals, with a special mention to the division one side for going back-to-back. Wanderers will come back ‘hungrier’ Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers captain Jesse Pitman says it’s always disappointing to lose a final, but Saturday’s result wasn’t through a lack of effort. “I’m extremely proud of the team and it’s just good to make another final. We didn’t get over the line but you’ve got to be in it to win it,” he says. Jesse says the team was “rocked” during the week when it was confirmed his brother Trael Joass would miss the final, and be sidelined for the rest of the year, due to an issue with his heart. “He’s been bloody good for us and he gives us that direct running, and we just missed that today. He would’ve gone close to making the Makos this year and he’s pretty important to our team, he was really missed.” And although Wanderers spoke of a “three year plan” in their return to the Car Company division one in 2012, Jesse

Wanderers number eight Tone Ng Shiu skips out of the tackle from Waimea Old Boys halfback Kaide Whiting, during Saturday’s division one final. Photo: Phillip Rollo. still believes his young squad is on the right track to winning their first championship since 1955. “I think we’ve got four or five guys over 25 years old so we’ll keep coming, and be-

cause we haven’t won yet we’ll still be hungry. We’re still chasing it, we’ll be back next year and we’ll be back in the final but hopefully we can go one better.”

after pool play. NBF general manager Clive Beaumont says he was thrilled with the success and says it’s especially remarkable considering Nelson doesn’t even have a junior futsal league. “These boys got together for four weeks of training and were playing against teams that play week in, week out.” Futsal is a five-a-side game played on a small indoor court.

The Waimea College first XV has won just their second game of the Press Cup season, and it’s come at an important time as the team look to get off the bottom of the table. Waimea College’s 14-5 win over Lincoln High School keeps them in 15th place, but with two matches left to play coach Daniel Hobbs was hopeful they could finish at least one spot higher. “I said last month that we just wanted to get some pride and enjoyment back, and on the weekend we definitely got some enjoyment back, and we need to make sure we’re better again this weekend,” he says. Waimea College will travel to ninth-placed Ashburton College on Saturday, which will be the team’s best shot at another win, as they have Nelson College in the final round. St Thomas College of Canterbury are the team above Waimea, but only on points differential.

Resource Consents

Community Notices

The Council has received an application for resource consents, which have been publicly notified in The Nelson Mail. The application and supporting information may be examined in any Council Office or Service Centre. The full public notice may be found online on Council’s website (www.tasman.govt.nz). Any person may make a submission on the application in accordance with Section 96 of the Resource Management Act 1991. Submission forms are available from Council Offices, Service Centres and on the Council’s website. Please note that the following is an abridged advisory notice only.

Rivercare meetings 2014

Location: Lee Valley Application Reference No: RM140540: Proposed Lee Valley Community Dam Resource consents are being sought to allow the construction, operation and maintenance of a dam and associated infrastructure on the Lee River in Tasman District, as part of the Waimea Water Augmentation Project. The application includes creation of a reservoir behind the dam, and discharge of that water from the reservoir for downstream flow augmentation purposes. Resource consents for the take and discharge of water for construction purposes are also sought. A small scale hydroelectric power generation plant at the dam is included in the proposal. A 10 year term of consent is being sought for activities relating to construction. A maximum consent term of 35 years is being sought for the permanent components of the proposal. The application does not include resource consents for the take and use of water released to the downstream river and groundwater. These consents will be applied for at a later date by the future users of the water and are not part of the Lee Dam application. Submissions due: 4.30 pm on Friday 15 August 2014.

Public Notices Submissions called for on reserve land proposal Tasman District Council is calling for submissions under the Reserves Act 1977, on its intention to declare a small area of freehold land at Mapua a Local Purpose (Walkway) Reserve. The Council is the owner of an existing Local Purpose Reserve at Aranui Road. This land is Lot 28 DP 17242 (3020m2), and is a walkway which runs between Aranui Road and the sea. When land adjacent to this Reserve was subdivided, a small area of land was offered to the Council as an addition to the Reserve. Due to technicalities in the subdivision process, the land was vested in the Council as freehold land. This land is Lot 1 DP 472570 (184m2). It is not a Reserve at this time, but Section 14 of the Reserves Act allows the Council to declare it to be Reserve, unless objections are sustained following public notification. If the freehold land becomes a Reserve, it will still be subject to all existing encumbrances on the title (easements and building covenants). The proposal is to amalgamate the titles of Lot 28 DP 17242 and Lot 1 DP 472570 when they are both Local Purpose (Walkway) Reserves. The proposal should have no impact on the physical use of either land parcel. Users of the walkway will not notice any difference if Lot 1 DP 472570 is made a Reserve and amalgamated with the adjacent existing Reserve. It is an administrative tidy up to allow land with the same physical use to be held in the same land title, with the same Reserve status. Plans of the existing Reserve and proposed addition to that Reserve can obtained by contacting Robert Cant on Ph. 03 543 8400, or via Email: robert.cant@tasman.govt.nz. Copies of this notice, plus plans will also be available on the Council’s website. Written submissions or objections should be sent to: Tasman District Council Private Bag 4 Richmond 7050 Submissions or objections will be received up to 4.00 pm on 20 August 2014. Please state whether you would like to speak to your submission in the event that a hearing is required.

Roadside Spraying Contractors employed by New Zealand Transport Agency undertake an ongoing vegetation control programme to ensure that roadside vegetation does not affect the safety or operation of the region’s state highway network. This programme includes the spraying of chemical herbicides including the following active ingredients: Glyphosate, Metsulfuron, Terbuthylazine and Triclopyr. Persons wishing to register their property as a ‘no-spray’ zone, which requires a commitment to maintain a property’s highways frontage to specifications provided by NZTA, may do so by contacting Lea O’Sullivan or Donna Hills on Ph. 03 548 1099 at Opus International Consultants, c/- Private Bag 36, Nelson.
