The Sundial stocks aimed at burglars The person who put a set of stocks in Sundial Square, with a sign directed at the “Cargill Place and Beach Rd Burglars” says he just wanted to “put a bit of subtle pressure” on the burglars to return the stolen property and that he won't be taking the law into his own hands. Garrick Steedman, who works for Cargill Place sawmillers Plankville, made the stocks and erected them in Sundial Square early on Thursday morning. He put a sign on the stocks that read: “Dear Cargill Place and Beach Rd Burglars. It's a race between us v the police. Let's hope they get you first... return all our property before we come visiting.” Garrick says the prank was in response to a series of burglaries in Cargill Place and Beach Rd earlier this month. The burglars stole a chainsaw, welder and tools from a container they broke into at Plankville, as well as “hitting” a number of neighbouring businesses. “These criminals have the run of the place and we wanted to let them know that we know who they are and that we aren't happy.

A set of stocks with a sign, directed at burglars who stole equipment from businesses in Cargill Pl and Beach Rd earlier this month. “This isn't the first time it's happened - some of the businesses down here have been hit three or four times in the last year. The stocks got a pretty good reaction. We even had a couple of calls afterwards from people telling us who did it and we've also been told that the person who did it saw the stocks.” They had relayed all that information to the police and were now hoping the burglars would return the stolen equipment. The stocks and signs were removed by council contractors on Thursday.

Easter egg hunt a good start to school holidays A hunt for Easter eggs and bunnies at Gardens of the World was a big success on Sunday morning, despite the wet weather. Dozens of families visited the gardens in Hope, with the hope of finding some sweet treats and other spot prizes. Children had to look for little soft toys hidden around the facility, which they could then swap for the prizes. The long Easter weekend also marked the start of the school holidays for students.

Anzac Day services will be held around the region this Friday, with thousands expected just for the Richmond service. This year is 100 years since the start of the First World War, but next year’s Anzac Day will be the centenary of when soldiers from New Zealand and Australia stormed the Turkish coastal town of Gallipoli. Richmond Waimea RSA president Terry Richardson says while next year will be a big occasion, this year will still be a huge day, with services in Richmond, Brightwater, Wakefield, Tapawera and Murchison for locals. The Richmond service attracts thousands each year and includes speeches, music from the local schools and wreath laying from RSA members, local councillors and community groups. Richmond man and RSA member, Rex

Waters, was a Lancaster pilot in War World II from 1943 to 1945 and he says Anzac Day is a special day to remember the war and his comrades. “It’s about commemorating my brothers more than anything. WW2 veteran I think of them and Rex Waters. other relations I lost in the war. “I think how unnecessary war was and yet we all had to suffer. It was horrible, but more for the parents. I always think about my mother, she was a bride from the First World War. There were seven of us she had to bring up.” Rex’s two brothers Cyril and Bill were in

their early 20s when they were killed at war. “We would have never heard an aeroplane yet three of us buggers wanted to fly. We had no education, we had to get that out of the book. Two of my poor brothers never came back, which was really sad for my mother.” The parade for the Richmond service starts from Sundial Square at 10.45am with the service at the War Memorial Gardens in Cambridge St starting at 11am. Other services around the region start at 6.30am with the dawn service in Nelson city’s Anzac Gardens. At 9am the Brightwater service begins on Lord Rutherford Rd and the Wakefield service at 10am. In Tapawera the service will begin at 9.45am at the Memorial Hall, and at 11am in Murchison.

Wind leaves family home in ruins The Hobbs family weren’t home when a massive heritage tree crashed through their Collingwood St home on Thursday so didn’t see its incredible fall - but thanks to the video-skills of Derek Sivers, hundreds of thousands around the world did. The massive tree was one of hundreds that were ripped out of the ground during high winds last Thursday and Friday. The tree falling was captured by Derek and has become a YouTube sensation, but for the Hobbs family and two of their neighbours, the tree represents a destroyed home. Jules Hobbs says he was at work at the Nelson City Council and his wife at her business, Koru Ultrasound in Richmond, when he got the call about the tree from one of his neighbours. He rushed home to find it had fallen on top of his bedroom and that of his teenage daughter, destroying clothes, furniture and everything else in the rooms. But he says the fact his family weren’t home and that their two cats and four chickens survived is the main reason to smile. “If it had happened an hour

The Brook, Victory, Stoke and Tahunanui areas were all hit hard and the sound of chainsaws echoed through the city on Friday morning. It wasn’t just trees hit either. On

Friday morning hospital staff realised a copper section of roof had blown off in the middle of the night and was dangling over the edge. Patients in ICU – which was directly under the section of roof – were moved as the Fire Service and Police waited for a strong gust to blow it off. Fortunately it held long enough for a crane to be brought in to bring it down. The region also received over 600mm of rain in just a few days at the end of last week.

A crash that involved a truck carrying tonnes of timber that went hurtling into a home with four pre-schoolers inside was too close for comfort, and frightened neighbours say it should be a lesson to speeding truck drivers. Home-owner Jill Riddle was home with the four pre-schoolers she cares for under the Porse home education umbrella and says she was heard the truck smash into her front yard. “I heard the skidding of the tyres first and then I heard something like thunder, but double the sound. It was really, really loud.” She says because it was a wet day the children were inside with her, but the front yard does have children’s equipment that is used on sunny days “I put my head out and saw the mess and then I asked the children line up and we went upstairs. We were having a look but it didn’t really register to me until a neighbour came over worried that the children weren’t safe,” says Jill. “The children were all quite fearful of what the sound was and we are going to

Rain can’t ruin fair

WAKEFIELD FC OUT OF CUP: Wakefield FC have fallen at the first hurdle in their ASB Chatham Cup campaign, losing 2-1 to Nelson College in the preliminary round at Saxton Field on Monday. Nelson College will now join Richmond Athletic, FC Nelson and Pirates in the first round. SURVIVORSHIP DAY: Next month the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust will be holding its first “Survivorship Day” which has been specially developed for breast cancer patients, carers and health professionals. The study day focuses on moving forward and embracing life after treatment for breast cancer. The NRBCT survivorship day is free and will take place on Friday May 16 at the Suburban Club. POLICE PATROL ROADS: Operation Unite and Operation Crossroads were running over the Easter weekend in an attempt by police to reduce the number of victims from alcohol-related crime and road trauma. The Tasman District Police were taking part in the operations, which included visiting bars and patrolling liquor ban areas and monitoring driver behaviour with the 4km/h speed tolerance in force.

The Mapua Easter Fair is often regarded as one of the biggest one-day events in New Zealand, with thousands of people visiting, even some from outside the region. But with wet weather still lingering on Sunday morning, the number of event-goers was well down this year, with some stall holders questioning whether it should have been moved to Easter Monday – that was until the sun finally broke through in the afternoon to attract some further people. The fair raises money for the local school and play centre, and there was still plenty of support from raincoat -wearing event-goers armed with umbrellas in morning, before a larger crowd showed up in the afternoon, adding to the takings. An overall tally of how much was raised has yet to be confirmed.

New book for Richmond author Richmond author Trudy Nicholson’s White Cloud Station series is being relaunched this month along with the seventh and latest book in the series Winter with Horses. The first six books were originally published by Penguin in 2009 but the new look versions and Winter With Horses have been released by CP Books Nelson. Four of the books feature cover photos of young horse riders from Upper Moutere girls Ella Doty and Grace Needham and Takaka’s Laila Balzer. Trudy says Ella, Grace and Laila were selected from 34 models to pose for the book covers. Trudy, who is also a professional photographer who specialises in animals, took the cover photos for the series.

Upper Moutere’s Grace Needham is one of the models in Richmond author Trudy Nicholson’s latest book in the White Cloud Station series. One war, three different navies

When Bill Boyce joined the New Zealand Navy as an 18 year old in 1943 the world was at war and he was “keen for a bit of excitement”. Bill served with three different navies over a two and a half year period in the Pacific and in the Atlantic Ocean around Europe. But his time as a seaman didn’t start that well. On his first night in the navy, on board the HMS Tamaki, Bill got in trouble for joking with a fellow crew member and was made to run around the parade deck for hours until they asked the officers if they could stop. It was a rough introduction but he says he enjoyed the discipline on board and his time there. After some time training around Auckland, Bill went to the Solomon Islands in the Pacific and served on the HMS Kiwi, which later destroyed a Japanese submarine by ramming it. While in the Pacific he received a letter from his mother that said his older brother Peter, who he hadn’t seen for around four years, was in a place that, he wrote, “rhymed with her name”, as they couldn’t say where they were in letters back

Singers off to nationals The Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus is putting on a show in Richmond this Sunday, just two weeks before heading off to the national women’s barbershop singing competition in Auckland. As a women’s barbershop chorus, Nelson Bays Harmony has been together for 20 years, and most years it competes at the national competition. This year the group will compete in the open entertainment section, and use the competition to meet with several hundred other singers.

The current group involves 34 members, with ages ranging from 19 to 79. Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus will be performing at Club Waimea this Sunday from 4pm, which will be the dress rehearsal for the contest, and it will also feature a competing quartet, the local men’s barbershop group, a ukulele duo and another local singer. Entry is by gold coin donation, with the money used to help fund the trip to the national competition.

It’s awesome being a member of Club Waimea. Let’s tell all the birds to join.

Local iwi on final leg of treaty settlement Local iwi are celebrating the final step of an “historic” treaty settlement. Last week saw the third reading of the Treaty of Waitangi Settlement Bills marking the final political step of the settlement process. The 70 day enactment period will complete the process, and the final sign off from the Governor General and the distribution of the agreed settlement will follow. The settlement represents a reported $200 million for iwi across the Top of the South and will have a massive im-

pact on the region. Last week Nelson mayor Rachel Reese hailed the milestone. “I applaud the intergenerational dedication and determination of all those involved with the negotiations. It has been a long process but to reach this final stage is momentous and no doubt very satisfying. The team work it has taken to get here is admirable. “We acknowledge that with this and other legislative changes, the way councils engage with Māori will change and that provides more exciting opportuni-

ties to work together.” She says she’d like to see an “appropriate community celebration” for the milestone, including residents from Tasman and Marlborough. “The Treaty of Waitangi settlement represents a huge opportunity for all local iwi to invest in the future of their people and their wider community. We, as a the council, want to continue to work closely with our local iwi and will welcome any new opportunities to work together on specific projects and initiatives as they arise,” she says.

Wednesday 16 April Poppy Day has been a part of the New Zealand calendar since 1922 and all the money that was raised this year is staying in the region and going towards supporting ex-service people. Volunteers were out in Richmond last Thursday collecting money but the total amount raised is still unknown. However, it’s believed that the total donation count will be down from previous years due to the terrible weather encountered on Poppy Day. Wednesday 16 April Last weekend was the Kart-sport New Zealand National Sprint Championships in Blenheim and Nelson had eight drivers head over to compete against the country’s best. Although none of the drivers were able to make it into the top 3 in any of their classes, Matt Butchard achieved their best result with 5th place in the KZ2 class and Jarod Fisher was next best with 8th place in the Junior Restricted Class. Wednesday 16 April St John has received some really good feedback after their request for more volunteers, says St John’s Francine Currie. “It was a really good time to have it with the first responders, parade. It’s all tied in together and made a big impact on people which is one of the reasons they have rung up so promptly.” Around 10 people have put their hands up and shown an interest in becoming St John volunteers within the Tasman area, and St John are grateful for their support.

e l p o e p d o o f h s Y ou r f re Caleb and Georgia Nott of Broods will be performing in Nelson in June. Photo: Stephen Tilley.

Home-coming for Richmond’s Broods Teens have plenty to look forward to this winter with a series of music gigs, headlined by Nelson success story Broods. Nelson Underage, an initiative of the Youth and Community Trust, is bringing siblings Georgia and Caleb Nott back to Nelson in June, although an exact date and venue is still to be confirmed. Georgia says they are looking forward to their home town gig, which comes hot on the heels of the band supporting Ellie Goulding’s arena tour of Australia and New Zealand. “We’ve been nagging our management to make a Nelson gig happen, and we’re now so excited to finally get to return home to play for our family and friends,” she says. “It’s made even more special to be invited by Pete and Glenn at Smokefreerockquest, to whom we owe so much.” Georgia and Caleb were members of the Garin College indie rock band, The Peasants, who won Smokefreerockquest in 2011. They formed Broods in early 2013 and began collaborating with Lorde’s

music producer, Joel Little. They’ve since signed worldwide deals with major record labels in the UK and USA, and toured in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and had sell out shows in the US. Broods’ debut single Bridges peaked at number one on the New Zealand singles chart and had over a million plays on Spotify worldwide. Nelson Underage organiser Nathan Telford says the suggestion to bring Broods to Nelson came out of discussions with the Nelson City Youth Council. “When we were looking at which performers to use, Broods were a clear favourite,” he says. Nelson Underage’s first winter gig is ‘Word on the Street’ - a hip hop competition and dance party at the Stoke Memorial Hall on April 26. The ‘Sound Clash’ concert on May 3 at the same venue gives local musicians a platform to perform on. Tickets to the Broods concert will be released to high school students a week before public sales, says Nathan.

Air NZ: We have read with interest the recent and on going correspondence in respect of travel with Air NZ through Nelson and your request for further readers experiences. Last October my husband and I flew from Nelson to Wellington. It was raining hard at Nelson prior to our departure and when the luggage arrived at Wellington (where the weather was dry) we were surprised to see the cases were extremely wet. It ap-

peared that no attempt had been made to cover the luggage while on its way to the aeroplane at Nelson. Considering the high cost of the 25 minute flight we would have expected at least a basic standard of service in this respect, as we have always found with Air NZ at other airports both in NZ and overseas. It was not possible to open our cases totally that evening and by the time we arrived at a motel the following afternoon we found the contents were wet right through. On particular item was not wearable while we were away and required professional cleaning on our return. We were fortunate that our motel unit had a very efficient heat pump and the owner kindly lent us a drying stand, normally used for the motel laundry. Oaklands Farm Fresh Milk We feel that the care of passengers now at 3 convenient locations belongings is an important part of our travel and, in our experience over many years, it is only Nelson STOKE where this problem has occurred. The top of the Yours faithfully, G.A Taylor.

It would be good for the Local Body [Nelson City and Tasman District Councils] that owns the Nelson Airport Authority, to represent the rate payers of Nelson and not just a big tenant of the Airport Authority, and approach a second major airline; such as Jetstar, to be a competitor, bringing the airfares down to a reasonable rate for NMDHB and the rate payers of Nelson. Cycle trail: Great “sell” job on why Tasman District Council should spend even more money on the proposed cycle trail. Just a few other facts though: Fact 1: the entire 175km trail will never be an Otago Rail Trail - cyclists will tangle with other traffic as much is on public roads and the terrain is very different. Fact 2: the estuary trail around the Waimea Inlet is popular - but has not been without costs to the habitat of some of our most threatened bird species. Fact 3: TDC's maintenance costs per annum estimate of $200,000 is far more realistic than the trust's $90,000 - and TDC will be doing the maintenance not the trust. $75,000 is budgeted for existing trail maintenance. Fact 4: TDC is the second most indebted council, after Auckland Council, in NZ. The council’s debt at 31 December 2013 was $157 million. With the proposed cuts in this year's annual plan, which includes $600,000 for extension of the trail Wakefield to spooners tunnel only (with the total estimated costs of the $2.4 million) forecast debt at 30 June 2015 will be $174 million. That's right - even with cuts there will be a substantial increase - and this must be paid for, eventually, by cash cows - the ratepayers. The council needs to collectively take a very deep breath and make the right decisions and as stated in its aims, “make sure development is sustainable”. HJ Campbell, St Arnaud.

across about half a dozen other people on the trail. Last year we were back in the area, but not riding, and everywhere we were in sight of the trail we saw bikes. Also the amount of accommodation available has increased markedly. I would like to see the $600,000 reinstated and the trail finished. The money could come from not building the new retail building at Mapua. The reason for the construction is to use the spare section for rental income. The cost is $1.2 million, how long is that going to take to recoup? Murray. Salisbury School: The fact is, there aren’t enough students to justify staying open. Brenda Kenny. So where do you propose those girls with high needs go then? In with the boys school? There are enough girls to keep it open and keep the roll up, it’s just that the Govt are making the criteria harder for them to get in. It’s dirty tactics for Hekia to get her own way. Sharon Nicholls. They wanted it closed one way, that failed...try a different way perhaps. Rayon Mackenzie. Storm: My fence collapsed in my back yard, as my neighbours trampoline made its way into my back yard. The neighbour managed to return his trampoline back to his own property. Jae Walter.

Just a thought... It seems everyone has an opinion on the new Noah film (even if they haven’t seen it!). Some have criticised it for straying too far from the Biblical account and some have praised it as a creative reinterpretation of the text. I personally found it to be a very thought-provoking film. While watching the film it became clear that Aronofsky and Handel have certainly done their homework. They mesh the themes of the Biblical account with non-biblical Jewish texts that were popular with both Jews and the early Christian Church. This works, to present a version of the story that is much closer to an ancient

understanding of the story than it is to the cutesy Sunday school version many of us are familiar with. The filmmakers also aren’t afraid to ask the messy questions we often don’t ask (or maybe don’t want to ask) when reading the Noah story. Most controversially was the depiction of Noah as less of a hero and more as a flawed man. He gets God’s will and his own mixed up. He struggles to make sense of everything that’s happening, especially when things seem to go very differently to how he expected. For Noah there are no easy answers. But here lies a very powerful illustration of what faith is. Life doesn’t always go the way we think it will. The disciples knew this better than anyone else in the wake of Jesus’ death. Where was the man who had taught them, guided them, and was supposed to save Israel? The gospels record that after the crucifixion of Jesus Micah Did-del, they locked themselves away, Holy Trinity afraid. Did they turn to Peter, Church. the oldest, for support? Did they read scripture? Did they remember Jesus’ predictions that he would have to sacrifice his life? The gospels don’t tell us, but they give us the impression that they certainly didn’t expect what happened next: the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Sometimes life doesn’t have easy answers. Soren Kierkegaard once said that life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards. Sometimes these things make sense after we have struggled through them. Sometimes they don’t. But that is the essence of faith; living life forwards and trusting God even when life doesn’t make sense.

This week I took a gamble. Not a very big one, just to be on the safe side, but a gamble none the less. I have been toying with the idea of growing veges in tubs. Well there is a limit to how long a person can “Toy About” so I found a decent-sized tub, one deep enough in which to grow some nice long carrots. Next, a careful troll along the carrot seed shelf until I found a variety that suggested sowing “spring to early autumn” Well maybe it’s not quite early autumn [that is where the gamble comes in] but it will have to do anyway. We have no idea what the weather will throw at us do we, but here goes. I filled the tub with fine friable soil, [carrots need that.] Then a bit of aged pea straw, more soil, some sheep pellets, a sprinkling of Neem Tree Oil granules (which is a soil conditioner and natural plant food), and followed with a topping of more fine soil. The seeds were sown very finely, and lightly covered with more fine soil. So there is my gamble, if you like to call it that. There is plenty of seeds left in the packet so spring will see another sowing. If the weather

RICHMOND BRAKE & CLUTCH

gets chilly I can always shift the tub to a more favourable situation. Why don’t you give it a go as well? There are heaps of things to do and plan for in autumn, which is nature’s planting season and if attended to now, a lovely spring garden will be your reward. • Check out the rhododendrons making their way into stores now. Planted now, they will have time to settle in during the autumn weeks and have a head start on the plants that are put in during the spring. • Get active with the spring bulbs available now. Plant, plant, plant for a lovely spring treat. If the winter is a dull one we will need a bit of cheering up at the end of it. • There is still time to sow many winter vegetables. However if you are impatient, plant seedlings instead. • Check out winter flowering annuals and potted colour, and plant now while the soil is warm and moist. • Use VaporGuard when planting seedlings. It reduces moisture loss through the foliage and also protects the plants from stress or shock at transplanting time.

Please contact Diane for more information Wanderers remain unbeaten A late try to in-form winger Kerehama Barrett saved the day for Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers, as they beat Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys 17-12 on Good Friday. It was the first time since coming back into the competition that Wanderers had gone to Jubilee Park and tasted success, and they claimed the Moller Cup for their efforts. Wanderers went into the match as the favourites, but the conditions played into Waimea’s favour, as their hard working forwards flourished in the wet weather. Despite it being a wet day, all of the tries were scored by wingers, with Riley Johnston bagging a brace before Kerehama’s late effort. The victory means Wanderers remain the only unbeaten side in the Car Company division one competition, the same record they had at this stage of the season last year. The teams now head into the Tasman Trophy, which includes six of the Marlborough clubs as well.

Brightwater School Market Day Pupils at Brightwater School moved out of the classroom and into the world of big business earlier this month when they organised and ran the school’s annual Market Day. Deputy principal Glenda Earle says the day was part of the inquiry learning topic and pupils had to conduct interviews, market research and surveys before organising the April 11 event. She says the school’s annual gala provided the blueprint for the market day and it was a big success. “We used our school gala to see how a market day worked and what sort of things appealed to people. The children did everything - we wanted them to be part of a really hands-on learning exercise.” The pupils ran 50 stalls on market day, selling a range of products including food, drinks, paper hats, flax flowers, pinecone creatures and pet rocks. Pupils were issued with 20 Brightwater dollars to purchase items, while visiting parents paid real money to help cover costs. “They were all very creative. It wasn’t all junk food,” Glenda says.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby www.wobrfc.co.nz

Plenty of positives taken from defeat While the scoreline didn’t favour Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys, co-coach Mark Milne says there are plenty of positives he can take out from Friday’s 17-12 loss to Wanderers. In-form winger Kerehama Barrett scored in the final few minutes to give Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers the win at Jubilee Park, after halfback Billy Guyton had kicked all 12 points for the home side. Mark says Waimea Old Boys were disappointed, having done all the hard work to win the game. “We were disapointed to let it slip but, as I said last week, they’re a side that are always well prepared at this time of the year and they were the form side,” he says. “But at the end of the day we were pretty pleased with the step up from where we’d been previously. The for-

wards were great.” Waimea ended the first round of the Car Company division one competition with three wins and two losses and it’s one of the sides that beat them – Wakatu Marist – that Waimea will face in the opening round of the Tasman Trophy this weekend. The Tasman Trophy also includes each of the premier Marlborough clubs, in a full round-robin format with no finals. Mark says the Marlborough sides will be tougher this year, but he was looking forward to the challenge. “We really enjoy it. It’s a great innovation and we really enjoy going over and playing different sides. It’s about how guys learn and cope with different conditions and travel.” Saturday’s match kicks off in Tahunanui at 3pm.

Waimea Old Boys halfback Billy Guyton returned to club rugby on Friday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Billy’s learning lots in Hurricanes squad If Kaide Whiting and Mark Swanepoel had been fit, Billy Guyton may have never got an opportunity in the number nine jersey for the Tasman Makos. But once he got his chance, the Waimea Old Boys utility back never relinquished the starting position, and having been contracted to the Hurricanes wider training squad as a halfback, Billy believes he is better suited to the number nine role. “I’ll be looking to make my mark at halfback for the rest of my rugby career,” he says. “I’m enjoying it and that’s the main thing.” Billy was used mainly at ten or 12 for Waimea Old Boys in their championship winning season. But when the ITM Cup began Billy, who was selected primarily as first-five

cover, got thrown into halfback when Mark and Kaide were both out injured. His form was so impressive in the position, which he hadn’t really played since high school, that the Hurricanes came calling and offered him a season-long wider training squad contract, where he trains with the team on a fulltime basis. He’s still available to be called upon for matches, and even though he sat on the bench while Chris Smylie was out injured, he’s yet to debut in Super Rugby. “I was looking forward to getting on, but you have to be patient, your time will come. Of course I

was disappointed, but that’s rugby.” Billy says his goal during his spell with the Hurricanes is to learn as much as he can, and the two incumbents halfbacks have been great mentors. “Chris Smylie has a lot of knowledge of the game, having been around it a long time, and TJ [Perenara] has been in the All Blacks environment so he’s teaching me a few things as well.” Billy believes he’s already become a better player over the past few months, adding even more physicality to his already abrasive game. And having turned out for Waimea on Friday, the club could be seeing more of Billy, with the Hurricanes development XV playing their final game this weekend.

Riders gear up for memorial The Tasman Wheelers at the launch of their new uniform at The Stables on Tuesday night.

New look to Wheelers

The Tasman Wheelers have been clocking up the kilometers in training, performing well in the races, and now they’ll look the part on the bike too. Support from Fresh Choice Richmond, Pomeroy’s Coffee, Tineli cycle clothing and the club’s other sponsors has resulted in a striking new uniform, which was officially launched at The Stables on Tuesday night. It will be worn by every rider in the club, but most notably for the Benchmark Homes Elite Cycle Series teams, which head to Hanmer for the third round race on May 10, before taking a break for winter.

The Benchmark Series is the pinnacle teams racing event in the South Island with six events, including a Nelson leg, spread across the calendar year. The Tasman Wheelers have been able to enter strong squads in the Elite Men, Elite Women and Master sections, and club vice-president Dean Fulton says there’s a feeling of positivity right across the board this year. “Everyone is happy with it. The sponsors are happy, the squads are happy and the riders are happy. Even the ones coming along to the club races can see our teams are getting good results and it’s putting a good feeling through the club,” he says.

Tadmor will host the Top of the South VMX Club’s annual Ray Anderson Memorial Trophy and Club Championship this Sunday. This year is the 10th anniversary of the Ray Anderson Memorial, and will feature special guest rider Josh Coppins. Ray Anderson was a member of the Nelson motorcycle club from 1947 until he passed away in 2003. He spent 52 years as secretary or treasurer, as well as being a member of the MNZ executive in the early 1960’s. Ray received the service award medal from MNZ in 1996 and also the Nelson community service award in 2002, for longstanding and valuable contribution to the sport of motorcycling. He raced all over the country and was involved in most motorcycle busi-

nesses in Nelson until he retired at age 65. The Ray Anderson Memorial Classic Trophy recognises this contribution and is raced for by a different class each year drawn on the day, which gives all senior riders the opportunity to race for the trophy. All the classes will race for the club championship and a new trophy has been donated by the Tapawera Hotel for the overall winner of the event, which is proudly sponsored by Morley Motorcycle and Marine. Food and drink will be available on the day, with the profits from the food going to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. Sign in is from 8am and racing starts at 10am.
