Busy bank empty, needs help Despite an improving economy, it’s still tough going for some locals with more people reaching out for help, according to local agencies which are being “inundated”. Last week a Bishopdale woman, who is living on less than $20 per week, was given a food bag with rotten fruit and other goods that were weeks past the used by date. Mike Gibson, coordinator of a local food bank, says in just three weeks in January, more than 100 parcels were given out and last week alone saw more than 26 recipients. “It’s getting quite usual to see that.” He says that while demand for the parcels is increasing, donations seem to be going the other way and that may be to blame for the off food. “People aren’t donating to the extent that they used to, times are hard. People put quite a few items in a bag and it looks pretty big, but when

She was declined a food grant from WINZ and was left feeling demoralised after a local charity gave her a food parcel containing goods passed their best before date and “rotten fruit.” “I felt sick. I felt really, really, really sick. I felt bad having to ask. But I had no money, it was terrible. You go somewhere for help and what do you get?” Rosalie Grant, a budget advisor from

Nelson Budget Service, says people seeking food parcels is common. “More and more people are asking for help. They only ask if they have used up all other options.” She says Nelson Budget Service is constantly under pressure. “We’re seeing more clients than we are funded for. We are underresourced and there are a large number of people asking for help.” She says not all people who are seeking help are in the same predicament and they come from different backgrounds. “Everybody is different, everybody’s situation is different. Most of our

clients are not in the position because they want to be, they are not in that position because they have chosen to be. “Sometimes it’s just bad luck, they’ve lost a job or had a baby that they weren’t expecting. Sometimes people are working 40 hours and have a family to feed and it’s just not enough.” She says that although they are working at capacity, it’s not all bad news with work seeming to pick up. “And there are a lot of agencies out there to help people, they just need to know where they are and have the wherewithal to seek it out.”

Dr Morton says because a huge amount of real time information was needed to be visible to ED doctors, the system was very complex to develop. The improved information programme links in with the clinical records system, giving instant access to patient notes. The success of the system has now attracted attention from a number of other DHBs and other health sector agencies throughout the country. “Having all this patient information at our fingertips means

An electronic “white board” has been designed for Nelson Hospital’s emergency department, the first of its kind in the country. Traditional white boards were once the centre piece of the emergency department but the new computer programme – called “ED at a Glance” – allows staff to see lists of patients, their symptoms and other relevant information on all ED computers as well as a large screen. Nelson Hospital emergency department clinical director Tom Morton says the new system means better efficiency for his staff. “Time is essential in ED, we need to know who is coming through, who’s looking after them, what’s happening to them, any test results, and where they are in their patient journey. “Previously this information was in patient files, written on the physical white board or ED staff had to log in to different systems to find out. ED staff can now see when radiology and laboratory results come through without having to keep checking in.” The new system is a truly Nelson innovation. This week marks one year until cricket’s showpiece event rides into town. Nelson’s Saxton Oval will host three games in the ICC Cricket World Cup next year and to mark the begining of the tournment a giant cricket ball with a clock was unveiled at 1903 Square last Thursday. Massive crowd means motor show will be back The first ever Nelson Motor Show offered more than just cars, with gyrocopters, trucks, motorcycles and – well, most things with motors, sprinkled out through the Tahunanui Holiday Park. Run by Steve Steele and Rik Thompson, who were both previous committee members of the Nelson Car Show, the Motor Show was certainly popular for petrol heads, with an estimated 6000 people coming through and checking out the displays over the two days, according to Steve. The event was promoted by Nelson Weekly and kicked off with a super cruise that featured a trail of 207 vehicles on the Friday night, with 317 vehicles going on display at the Saturday show and then

429 on display at the Sunday show. Trade displays, showing “how things work”, and a market with clothing and food stalls were also included this year. Steve says the event will be an annual one, and will again be held at the Tahunanui Holiday Park, which allowed the show to work as a “little town”. “We filled the grounds and nearly ran out of room but we might change the way we do things a wee bit,” he says. There were 34 trophies up for grabs, including awards for nearly every brand of car, with people’s choice going to Nick Appleman’s 1957 Bohemoth. Christchurch man Doug Smith’s 2007 Ford Mustang GT, with its bonnet painted with the American flag, was awarded as the judge’s best.

A crowd, estimated to be between 3500 and 4000 strong, attended the returning Brightwater Wine and Food Festival at Middle-Earth Vineyards. With ticket prices reflecting a “back to basics” approach, organisers from the Richmond Rotary Club were thrilled to say that Sunday’s record crowd means

the festival is back for good and will return as an annual event. “We wanted to go back to basics with some really good food, really good wine, really good beer and it’s really worked,” says Rotary chairman Peter Glue. “The crowd was so well behaved. Everyone was up dancing and loving it. We’ve proven that this will now be an annual event.” The feedback from people at the festival was also very

positive. Janet Hardcastle of Hope, who had been before, enjoyed socializing with friends and the music, which was performed by local acts. Heather Gibbs of Brightwater, says going back to basics was a good approach, and she was enjoying the whitebait fritters which proved a hit with plenty of others as well. Hillary Carpenter, who lives in Richmond and biked out, hadn’t been before and says

she was really pleased she did this year. “I’ve spent a bit of time in Australia and been to these things but to me this is just superb. I’ve had two whitebait fritters already and the wine is just gorgeous.” Money raised from the festival will go towards the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter and to groups in the Brightwater community such as the volunteer fire brigade, Wanderers Rugby Club and others.

Cottage upgraded for mothers of sick babies A $17,000 renovation of a hospital cottage means mothers with new born babies in special care will have a much more comfortable stay. The upgrade was a joint effort between several local Lion clubs, South Pine and the district health board, and was officially blessed and opened last Thursday. The idea for project started when a DHB staff member emailed a Lions club member to tell them about the Special Baby Care Unit Cottage and its need of a tidy up. The bulk of the money came from the 30th annual charity golf tournament run by South Pine and the Nelson Host Lions Club last November. Almost $10,000 raised from that event alone went to the

total cost of the renovation. General manager of South Pine, Peter Crighton, says his company has enjoyed the 30 year association with Lions and is proud to have “the cottage” as the beneficiary this year. The work at the cottage was an internal makeover to provide improved heating, lighting and out of date appliances, needed for residents who use the cottage on an irregular basis. Maureen Higgs, charge nurse manager for the unit, says she was "delighted" with the upgrade. Other Lions and Lioness Clubs in the Nelson region contributed to the upgrade including Golden Bay, Motueka, Richmond and four clubs in Nelson city.

$10m centre opened at retirement village Summerset opened a $10 million centre at its Nelson village last week, a significant step for the retirement village operator’s first site in the Nelson/Marlborough region. Summerset CEO Norah Barlow opened the building, with Nelson MP and Housing Minister Nick Smith and Nelson mayor Rachel Reese in attendance on Wednesday. Norah says the village represents a significant investment in Nelson’s community.

“During the nine-month-long construction of this village, some 80 people have been on site each month, and we’ve hired more permanent staff for the Village Centre such as registered nurses, diversional therapists, housekeepers, cooks and caregivers.” Development at the $80 million village started in 2011, after Summerset bought the former Gracefield Resort. The completed village will provide homes for an estimated 350 people.

Locals to fight Aussie blaze

One crew of Nelson firefighters is already helping to battle the most dangerous bushfire threat in Australia since the Black Saturday inferno that raged across Victoria in February 2009 and a second crew is on its way, leaving Nelson to join the ANZAC fire fighting force this week. Colin Eggers and his team of Peter Henderson, Rex Mitchell, Daniel Pearless and Bruce Hampton arrived in Victoria on February 3, when they joined a contingent of 42 New Zealand fire fighters based at Orbost, about four hours drive north of Melbourne. The Waimea Rural Fire Authority volunteers are helping combat a series of bushfires that have burned across 333,000 hectares of Victoria and Colin says it’s been “hard yakka” battling the fires, heat, smoke and steep terrain. “These fires are so huge they’re unbelievable. The destruction is so widespread it looks like an atomic bomb has gone off. “We’ve been putting in containment lines around the Cann River and Bonang Highway. It’s been hard yakka because it’s been so hot and smoky and we are working with hand tools on steep country. Last Sunday the temperature was around 45 degrees and the smoke is thick, it’s like being in Nelson on a really foggy winter’s morning. The boys have been doing the hard yards.” Colin says conditions last Sunday were “so scary” they weren’t allowed to go into the bush to fight fires. Instead they were

Old papers found hidden in antique When Maria Martin bought an antique cabinet at auction in England, it wasn’t because she had an inkling that there might be a secret compartment hidden up the top – but that’s what she ended up buying. It was only when a customer at the Richmond Antique and Curios store noticed the sun had slightly warped the plywood, uncovering family documents dating all the way back to the 1700s, that Maria knew she had struck something significant. “There were two customers looking at it who said they had found some photos in there, and I thought ‘where?’ because it was all taped up shut,” says Maria, the owner of the antique store. “They just lifted it up and I didn’t even think there was anything inside it like a secret compartment.” While it may not have been gold or jewels, which would be typical items hidden away in a compartment like this, Maria says the documents, which include photos, the will of Samuel David, land deeds, undertaker receipts, death notices, a pair of sunglasses, and art work, would be hugely valuable to the family. “It was obviously something they

wanted to keep or to hide, to make a secret compartment for that book case. But it’s all neat family history.” The family name in all of the documents was David, and Maria believes it may have been a Jewish family which had come to England as refugees from France and had tried to hide the fact they were Jewish. “We think maybe the French Revolution.” The documents have plenty of dates inscribed, including Samuel’s marriage in 1813. The land deeds have occupations such as an artist, while it is also noted that the Davids were a family of silk weavers. “If you were from this family, you’d just be over the moon finding all this research.” Family Search has already been through and taken photos of all the documents, so they will be preserved forever. The actual documents are likely to be sold as a package at the antique store, although Maria didn’t believe they would attract a significant figure as the family was living in England, where historic family documents weren’t uncommon – had they been a New Zealand family that might have been another story.

Mainly Music's Stoke group celebrated its first birthday last week, enjoying its usual musicbased activities and a special birthday cake for the group's children, parents and helpers. Mainly Music is an international movement started in 1990 that provides fun, musicbased activities for parents or

care givers together with their pre-school aged children. The Stoke group started in the Stoke Primary School Hall one year ago after moving from the Richmond Baptist Church and one of the organisers Wendy Milson, pictured with cake, says their numbers have been growing. “We have 20 children

on our roster and usually get about 10 or 12 coming in each week. I also run a group in Wakefield and there's another seven groups around Nelson so it's very popular.” The group meets every Thursday at 9.30am for a 30 minute session and Wendy says everyone is welcome to attend.

Businesses team up for Relay for Life Two Nelson businesses have teamed up for next month’s Relay for Life, and are offering participants and event-goers the opportunity to create their own sterling silver ribbon pendant. Glen James Jeweller and A1 Homes Tasman will be entering the event on March 1 as “Team Design” and have put their own personal touch on the fundraising efforts. There, they will have a tent where people can purchase and create their own ribbon pendant in memory of loved ones who fought cancer and to honour the journey of cancer survivors. “They’re all made out of sterling silver and it’s the only time we’re going to do it, it’s just at the event. The idea is for them to make them so there’s a personal

attachment,” says Glen James. “If you’ve made it yourself or had something to do with it, then it’s a lot more personal.” Glen will guide people, step by step, to make their own personalised ribbon which will cost $35, with the option of a $15 sterling silver chain. $10 from each of the pendants will be donated to the Nelson Cancer Society, with the rest money just covering costs. “It’s always been a good cause to be a part of and if we can help in any way then we will,” says Shane Mickell of A1 Homes, who is also shaving his head on the day. Phone app brings history alive Nelson’s history has been brought back to life thanks to a new phone application designed by three Nelson men. The heARt app attracted $45,000 of funding from New Zealand On Air and was launched at the Nelson Provincial Museum on Valentine’s Day. It allows users of smartphones or tablets to download the app for free and then visit 13 historic locations around Nelson. When at one of the designated sites, users can hold their phone up to the building and it will be replaced on the phone by what was there more than a century ago. HeARt stands for “Heritage Augmented Reality Tours” and the app uses three-dimensional scene recognition technology to post historical images and content about the sites. “We wanted to show people what Nelson has lost,” said project leader David Brydon. “And this is just the start, we’ll be adding another 12 locations to the app pretty soon.” The heARt project team includes David, lead designer Paul Devine and chief programmer Patrick Stobbe. David and Patrick are both studying information technology at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and Paul is a staff member at NMIT. David says the app could be used in other cities around New Zealand but would need to be paid for. “Nelson is lucky with this because we were able to get the funding through

This week I’d like to send out a general warning to be wary of people offering to do painting or driveway maintenance. In the last week we have received reports of what appear to be unscrupulous operators preying on older homeowners in the Nelson Bays area. One couple had a painter do a very poor job on their roof, and at the same time several thousand dollars in cash disappeared from their house. Open plan classrooms: Yes, open plan teaching has been around for a long time. I have relieved in open plan teaching classes many times. Education is not static and continues to change with old ideas repackaged under new names. Richard Oakly (via nelsonweekly.co.nz). How does this differ from the open plan approach in the 70's and 80's - I recall doing a teaching practice in such a set up in Brighton in Christchurch in 1982 - it was fun - we had 3 teachers and about 80-90 children, another school I taught at in the late 80's and early 90's we had a similar set up - three teachers standard 2 - form 2 in those days 3.5 teachers. My late wife Janet was one of the first teachers to be trained in the proposed use of this system and started the scheme at the Bayview Primary School on Auckland's North Shore. Eighty plus children and a team of teachers all in one room. The teachers hated it and the kids had a mischief ball. It didn't last long and it is interesting to see the idea rejuvenated. How long will it take for my system to pay for itself? It varies depending on the system size, but an average system takes around 6-8 years to pay for itself completely. What is the life-expectancy of a PV system? Your PV panels come with a 25 year production warranty and your inverter is warranted for between 5 and 10 years. Is it quality gear? It’s the best. Made in New Zealand and Europe. Is this like solar hot water heating? No. Solar hot water systems rely on heat from the sun. PV solar panels rely on light from the sun. PV can power your whole house not just hot water. Does the sun have to be shining for the system to work?

The more light the better but even on a cloudy day the PV system will still produce electricity.

Can I store the electricity I create? There are 3 types of system. Grid-tie, Off Grid and Mixed Grid-tie with battery back-up. With Grid-tie there is no electricity storage and it is the most common system. Why get a pre purchase house inspection? Your lending institute or insurance company may require one or you for your own peace of mind. A good report should identify areas of risk, moisture problems, rot and borer, structural defects and areas due for maintenance. These issues can help you with what additional costs you may incur immediately or in the near future, and may affect the agreed purchase price. Who can do an inspection? The current Sales and Purchase agreement form requires a Suitably Qualified building inspector. However anyone can carry out an inspection. • So, the party’s over. Christmas and New Year is done and dusted. The same can be said for Anniversary Day, and Waitangi Day. The kids have gone back to school now that the weather has picked up. Poor little guys, but that’s the way it is. It’s time to get real. It’s pretty hard to be thinking about winter on a lovely sunny day, but if you want something to eat during the cold season, you have to start thinking and planning now. There is no such thing as a “free” lunch so let’s plan a real lunch now. • I have been dipping into “The NZ Vegetable Garden” a book written by Sally Cameron. The cover claims it to be “the complete guide to growing vegetables and herbs in New Zealand.” It has lots of advice on growing and sowing, followed by cultivation and maintenance of the plants, harvesting, storage, and a few recipes thrown in for good measure, as well as advice on the best method of cooking these treasures that we are going to produce. She offers the golden advice of “start small and manageable, and once that has been mastered EXPAND.” There is also a section on pests and diseases, and a calendar to tell us when to grow or sow what, and where. • When I really, really, retire, [I have tried that lark four times already] I plan to grow a lovely productive vege garden, and it is my intention to store this excellent little book along with the gardening gloves and all the necessary tools required for the job in the same place, so that it

will always be at hand when required. • But to put things in a nutshell, we should be sowing beetroot, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, spring onions, silver beet, swedes, lettuce and radish seeds now. However, February is also a good month to plant most of those already mentioned, as well as brussel sprouts and leeks. There is mention in the book to ensure that the soil be very fine for the sowing of carrots to ensure a straight shape. I would suggest the same for parsnips as well. Another handy tip relates to white butterfly that horror of horrors that plagues the vege garden. Apparently white butterflies are territorial critters. Once they choose a patch they stalk it! But if they are seeking a place, they take off if they see another butterfly in residence. Therefore, of you scatter white egg shells around the cabbage patch they [hopefully!] will think that plot has been taken, and will take off to another location. Well, I’m not sure about that bit of advice, but I suppose it is worth a try! It will soon be time to think about a green crop for any spare parts of the vege garden. And need I mention that wonderful pea straw that is becoming available now. Do you remember trying to find pea straw for your strawberry patch last season? Well if you have any sense, you will grab some bales now, store them in a dry place, and your problems will be sorted come Christmas later this year.

She encouraged a group of fellow members at Greg’s gym to take part in “Mud, Sweat and Tears” in Christchurch during July 2013. All nine participants from their group finished the ten kilometre course and they were hooked. The Wairua Mud Rookies are now in training for an event in April, the “Tough Mudder” race in Auckland, a 20 kilometre obstacle course. The group meets for training sessions on Sunday mornings, utilizing local running trails with gates, fences and hills as obstacles. The club is actively seeking new members to add to their current pool of 22 people. Anybody interested in joining the club, or offering sponsorship, should contact Greg on 021 876 141.

There’s a challenging new sports club on the Nelson fitness scene thanks to Greg Witika, Sharron Martin and Steve Fitzgerald, founders of the Wairua Mud Rookies Obstacle Course Racing Club. The sport of obstacle racing, popular in the USA, Europe and Australia, has begun to grow a dedicated following throughout New Zealand and these local trailblazers are keen to see more participation in the Nelson region. Greg, co-owner of Nelson gym Wairua Body Coaching Systems, says the great thing about obstacle racing is that it’s totally do-able, you don’t need expensive equipment to take part. “It’s like being a kid again and playing in the great outdoors. We utilize the trails and paths that we’re lucky enough to have on our doorstep and we put the fun back into fitness”.

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Tasman Bay has been blessed with some absolutely stunning weather as of late. Sea conditions have been at their best and settled weather looks like it’s here for at least another week, so make the most of it while it lasts. Rat kingfish seem to have taken over the bay, with many anglers reporting encounters with them. They have been caught on kahawai lures, baits on the setline, found in nets and taking tuna lures. While most of them are as big as the larger kahawai, around the 50cm and not legal to take, they are a heap of fun to catch. The legal size for kingfish is 75cm. This looks great for the future fishery and is probably a result of more fish spawning in the bay, especially round the spat mussel farm. The larger models have been hanging around the spat farm and Boulder Bank and Separation Point, but not in the quantities of previous seasons. Another species that is also quite prolific at the moment is the John Dory. Quite a few have been caught in recent weeks. The best way to target them is with live bait on the sea floor. When anchored up fishing for other species, try using a jack mack-

erel or spotty as live bait on a flasher rig and you might be pleasantly surprised at the result. Delaware and Cable Bays are still producing plenty of Gurnard as well as some nice Blue Cod and snapper. The Snapper should have finished spawning and come hard on the bite anytime. Fishing for them has been hard over the last month or so but is typical for this time of year and catching them is very sporadic. The best way to find out when they are back in business will be word of mouth around town. Once the first story gets out, most people know within days, and the boat ramp will be in for a hammering that weekend. Tuna are now on both sides of the bay out at the 40m mark. As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of small Kingies around and they also love the lures so some patience is required to get through them. There have been reports of 50 cm plus blue cod being caught at the top of D’urville but don’t forget to take into account where you will be transporting and landing your fish. Check the regulations on the taking of blue cod and adhere to them.

Running back to the US It wasn’t Dr Pepper, American hotdogs or the Dallas Mavericks that lured Jeff Lautenslager back to the United States -- it was the prospect of becoming a champion runner. Just last week the 18 year old signed his letter of intent for Boise State University, a mere formality that is basically him saying “yes” and agreeing to their terms of a full scholarship. In August of this year, the Texas-born Jeff will leave for Boise in Idaho, where he will study graphic design and run on their track and cross country teams. Jeff sees the US college system as the perfect pathway to help him fulfill his dream of becoming more than just a running prospect. “One of the main reasons why I wanted to go is just the whole set up there gives you a better chance to make it in the sport,” he says. “There are a lot of examples of athletes who just stay here and they just stay the same, they never improve.”

Jeff ’s older brother Craig is already over in the United States where he too is on a full scholarship and running track. He attends the University of Texas at Arlington, and that would have been Jeff ’s second choice too, but he decided against studying at the same place as his brother. “We’ve got a great relationship but I want my own experience separate to his. I already know a lot about UTA so it will be a lot more exciting at Boise State.” Before leaving for the United States, Jeff will still compete at one more national championship with the New Zealand Track and Field Championship set to be held in Wellington next month. With a personal best time of 4 minutes 1.44 seconds, he has two goals for the competition, winning the title and breaking the four minute barrier which has alluded him so far. “I really want to win because this is my last nationals and my aim has always been to win a national title.”
