Report highlights danger at intersection By Julia Evans NEW RESEARCH reveals the controversial Glandovey and Idris Rds intersection is not suitable for heavy vehicles. The Glandovey, Idris and Straven Residents’ Association commissioned a tracking
analysis to look into traffic using the intersection. The report from traffic engineering company Traffic Design Group showed heavy vehicles could not navigate any turns of the Fendalton intersection without cutting into other lanes.
It comes during a year-long campaign from residents to improve safety at the intersection. Residents want to see heavy vehicles banned from driving through the area and this report only cements that, group member and Glandovey
Rd resident Nigel Francis said. The report has been sent to the city council. City councillor Raf Manji told the Nor’West News that when council resumed after the Christmas break, it would look into banning heavy vehicles from the area.
Mr Francis said the sooner trucks are banned from the area, the better. He said the design of the intersection means there is no room for heavy vehicles, cars and cyclists, which makes it dangerous. •Turn to page 5
Age no problem to bowls champ Elmwood Park Bowling Club duo Bev Morel (left and below), and Sherrie Cottle, 57, were crowned national pairs champions in Dunedin on Sunday. At the ripe old age of 76 it was Morel’s third national title, proving age is no barrier to success. The Elmwood duo defeated the defending champions, Dale Rayner and Ashleigh Jeffcoat, 19-6, in the final.

Safety concerns on narrow road By Julia Evans IT’S ONLY a matter of time before someone is killed on a narrow road between Northlands Shopping Centre and Papanui High School. That’s according to PapanuiInnes Community Board member John Stringer, who has been lobbying for safety issues on Sissons Drive to be addressed John Stringer for the better part of the year. “A local fatality is a high possibility soon if we do not take action,” he said. Mr Stringer said he witnessed a crash where a vehicle went through the fence into a building at Papanui High School. “It could have hamburgered a mum with a pram or a cluster of Papanui students or cyclists into the metal railing fence and concrete wall,” he said. “There is a very wide pedestrian and cycleway alongside an extremely narrow two-lane carriage way flanked by concrete slab walls which is becoming a

In Brief SPORTS CAR PARK GRANT The Belfast Sports and Community Centre has been granted $1500 by the Papanui-Innes Community Board to go towards repairing pot holes in its car park. The club wants to repair the superficial holes temporarily before looking at raising $87,000 to repair and reseal the entire car park. Due to the high cost, the club will look to repair the car park once earthquake strengthening has been completed on its building. BOYS’ HIGH RUGBY TOUR Ten Christchurch Boys’ High students received grants to compete at the world schools rugby festival in South Africa from April 2-7. Ryan Barnes, Sam Caldwell, Nathan Fahey-Baker, Mitchell Hay, Ben Lopas, Sean McKeon, Cullen Moody, David Ni, Brandon Prinsloo and Luke Timms were each given $200 to go towards the trip by the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board.

Motorists targeted near St Albans School By Julia Evans PUPIL SAFETY remains in the spotlight at St Albans School. A funding grant for an additional traffic warden and a two-week police sting were launched in a bid to address the ongoing problem of speed, dangerous driving and inappropriate parking which has been compromising the safety of pupils around Westminster, Trafalgar and Cranford Sts. Police and the city council ran the ‘education and enforcement – CHAOS at the school gates’ programme to address the issues. The programme wrapped up at the end of last month. Police and city council enforcement officers were at the site during the morning and afternoon to monitor the behaviour of motorists for two weeks. Papanui-Innes Community Board chairwoman Ali Jones said it was about changing the attitudes of motorists permanently. She said another operation was planned when the school reopened to keep the momentum up. “I don’t mean it as a pun but it’s about keeping that foot on the accelerator,” she said.
SAFETY: Lee Jewell guides St Albans School pupils across the road every morning and afternoon. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
However, she said the operation wasn’t entirely about being “punitive”. “It’s about education and educating people about how to navigate the area,” Ms Jones said. It comes as the board approved an additional $1500 grant to pay for another traffic warden and patrol – although the school initially requested $4500.
The school told the community board there was still an “immediate need” for further traffic wardens and patrol support. The school currently pays for two traffic wardens on Trafalgar and Cranford Sts using Ministry of Education funding. The community board has also requested that the city council

make school warning signage a priority in the 2018/19 financial year. The board said the urgency stemmed from the ongoing traffic issues. It wants more signage installed before the opening of the Northern Arterial, which is expected to bring more traffic through the area.

Danger at intersection highlighted
•From page 1 “There’s a lot of heavy traffic that jams its way down here, down these narrow streets. It’s dangerous for us and anyone using the roads,” Mr Francis said. Group spokesman James Wilding said heavy vehicles are common in the area since it was upgraded from lights to a roundabout three years ago. The report comes following the release of city council safety audits to the group via the Local Government Official Information and Meeting Act in November. The audit said “death or serious injury” at the intersection of Glandovey and Idris Rds is “likely” once every five to 10 years due to visibility issues between vehicles and pedestrians. During the campaign to address roading concerns, city council chief executive Karleen Edwards recommended residents not be involved in a workshop to find solutions. However, the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board went against that decision.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY... HOW TO COOK BARBECUE GRILLED BUTTERFLIED WHOLE CHICKEN
STEAK AND MUSHROOM PIE Ingredients
Ingredients
4 large portobello mushrooms, sliced 800g tri-tip steak, cut into 2cm pieces 20g butter 2 Tbsp oil 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 serving flour, seasoned, for dusting 2 cups beef stock ½ tsp mixed herbs ½ cup red wine 1 Tbsp flour, mixed with 1 Tbsp melted butter for the thickening 1 sheet short pastry (savoury) 1 sheet puff pastry 1 egg, for glazing
1 whole butterflied chicken 1 to taste salt & freshly ground pepper Barbecue sauce Directions Preheat grill to medium. Get surface temperature to about 200 deg C. Clean and oil well. Clean the chicken if you desire and pat dry. Cut the backbone out of the chicken with sharp kitchen scissors. You could use a knife, but the scissors are much safer and work great. With a large knife, give the breastbone a large nick in the front of the chicken to help the bird lay flat. Rinse the inside of the bird out, trim any loose fat and extra skin. Pat dry again. Give the bird a good sprinkle of salt and pepper. You could use any seasoning you want here. Place skin down on the grill. Flip after you get a nice browning on the skin after about 12-15min.
Directions
Give the chicken a good brushing of barbecue sauce. Grill another 3-4min until the sauce is browning well.
Total grilling on the second side should take 20-25min. Let set for 5min then cut and serve.

oil in a frying pan. Brown the meat in batches then add to the onions. Add a little of the stock to the pan to deglaze then pour into the pot. Add the remaining stock to the meat along with the herbs, red wine and mushrooms. Cook on a low heat for 1 hour or until the meat is tender. Remove ¼ cup of the liquid and add to the thickening, combine then tip back into the pot and stir to thicken. Check the seasoning (add salt and pepper if you wish). Cool the mixture to room temperature. Line a 23cm pie tin with the short pastry and trim the edges. Line with baking paper and rice and bake blind for 15-20min until just cooked. Remove the paper. Fill the pastry with the meat mixture. Dampen the edges, and top with the puff pastry, pressing gently to seal. Use any extra pastry for decoration. Make a few slits in the top with a knife to release steam during baking. Brush the top with egg. Place into the oven for 35-40min until the pastry is risen and golden. Remove and serve hot.

This sensational property has that instant ‘fall in love” effect... I’m not sure if it is the beautiful expansive water view, the private position or simply the home? Most likely it’s a combination of all that makes this a very special property. Modern, stylish and spacious, this home is soaked in sun, enjoys fabulous views. The home has been quality built, with an architectural appeal that will ideally suit families and professional couples who are seeking something a little different and a lot special. The property is tucked away, yet offers easy access, good off street parking and internal garaging. The home itself boasts a versatile floor plan, to cater for growing families or those who chose to work from home, or simply love to entertain. Generous open plan kitchen and dining plus a separate lounge with a floor to ceiling picture window invites the view inside dominates the first level and open to a deck that provides the ideal spot to soak in the view
and relax with a wine or good book after a busy day. Also on this level is the master suite, complete with ensuite and walk in robe. Head downstairs and you will find a further three bedrooms, all with great storage and the main bathroom. This property is one that must be viewed to appreciate, come and see for yourself. SINGER-songwriter Charlotte Yates prepares to deliver New Zealand's first songwriting retreat in Hanmer Springs, Waitangi Weekend, Feb 2-6, 2018. A professional songwriter for over 25 years, Charlotte also coaches songwriting students individually through her service, Song Doctor. Charlotte has designed and presented small group based songwriting programmes for workshops and following her own study through the Berklee College of Music recently, more intensive clinics. e Songwriters Retreat NZ has developed out of several shorter successful Songwriting Clinics held throughout the South Island over the last two years. Held over five days, the inaugural Songwriters Retreat NZ is an opportunity for songwriters to create and present new work in a clear, well designed practical programme, including one on one coaching, tutor and peer feedback and co-writing sessions. Songwriters Retreat NZ offers tried and tested methods for stimulating inspiration and turning it into real songs people want to hear. A maximum of12 places are available – enough to allow supportive musical connection, but also enough time for individual mentoring. Go from thinking about songwriting to doing it. Go from wanting to be a songwriter to being one. For more information, bookings and full programme go to www.songdoctor.co.nz.
