These are the questions that need our attention now, as we plan ahead for what can only be described as Christchurch’s most anticipated week-long event. It is only fitting, then, that the October issue of Style oozes Cup Week charm. We also pause to consider why there’s so much fuss around NZ Cup and Show Week, taking a glance at racing events around the globe, where the stakes are even higher for fillies and fashionistas alike. The traditions are just as important whether you are at Ascot, where fascinators are prohibited, or the Melbourne Cup, which, unlike its English cousin, embraces spring colour. Victoria Tait, the familiar name and face who has led Style for the past 18 months, knows fashion inside out. Her vision and personal style has elevated our magazine to the bold, clean look it has today, with editorial that has been so well received by you, the reader. While Victoria has decided to take on a new venture, we are lucky enough to still have her leading the biannual Style Fashion publication and our fashion pages – the editorial spread in this issue being a testament to her prowess. ith Cirque du Soleil having picked up its Avatar-blue carpet and headed across the ditch, the next circus spectacular to land here is brought to us by Montreal-based troupe Cirque Eloize. New Zealand is the last leg of the Cirkopolis tour that has already stopped in Scotland, Brazil and France, but Christchurch will be the first Kiwi city to see what happens when you blend circus, theatre and dance. We were surprised to learn the cast had a couple of Kiwi connections, one being aerial rope specialist Rosita Hendry and the other, lead performer Ashley Carr. Ashley has been with the show since it premiered in Helsinki five years ago, and was involved in its creation – perhaps why his character bears his namesake. While he hasn’t put down roots in New Zealand, his father has, the owner of deer farm in Geraldine for the past 30 years. For Rosita, New Zealand is home. Auckland is where her family lives, and where her journey to become a professional circus artist all began. When asked the main difference between Cirkopolis and other shows, Ashley points to the skill of its cast. The performers must be multi-disciplined, and in being this way the story is able to unfurl with a more exciting pace. “There’s always tons of action going on on the stage, all the time,” Ashley says. The show follows a story of an office worker breaking free from the bonds of monotony, as played out in the 1927 film Metropolis, but there’s humour, too. “There’s plenty of slapstick and poetic humour woven through the storyline which heightens as he [Ashley] transitions from a dull

existence to a happier place,” Ashley explains. We interupt Rosita’s training to ask her a few extra questions about Cirkopolis ahead of the show’s arrival. What is your favourite part of the show? One moment I enjoy in my number is the very beginning when my business suit is taken off to reveal my red dress. At this point it feels like I’m stepping out of one world and into another. Performing can be a lot like that for me. When I was young I was very shy, but performing on stage was different, I could step into a new world on stage and could really be myself.  Should we take along our partners, kids, or both? The show definitely has something for everyone. You have strong athletic artists performing high levels of acrobatic skills and humour that has the right balance for children and adults. I can guarantee you will come away with a smile on your face. Following your dream to be a circus artist has certainly taken you around the world. Did you ever expect to become accredited as a specialist in aerial rope with a minor in cyr wheel?   Growing up in NZ thinking about performing in such high level companies when NZ seems to be so far away were really just dreams. Along the way I’ve learnt that the only way to get to the top of the mountain is consistent application and knowing when to rest and enjoy the moment... stopping to smell the roses as they say.

Is travelling with Cirque Eloize in any way like growing up in a household of seven children? Most definitely. Growing up in a largeish family you get used to always having people around, learning to adapt to different personalities, and how to work as a team. When you are in close proximity with the same people day in and out you also learn when you need to just take quiet time for yourself. It’s made it an easy transition. I love being with family and all the different dynamics that come from all the personalities. When you do make it home, what’s the first thing you do? I haven’t been back in NZ for two and a half years but the first thing I will be doing after I say hello to all the family will be heading outside to the beach, weather permitting, or just somewhere outside in nature. The one thing I really miss on my travels is the fresh air and beautiful scenery we have all around us that is so accessible. It is just a way of life and one I didn’t really appreciate fully till I moved out of the country six years ago.  What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you? I once entered Miss World NZ, which was a huge out-of-my-comfort-zone experience that meant I had to face my fear of public speaking. I was petrified but learnt what it meant to find courage in the midst of fear!

What’s next on your high-flying horizon? As circus is contract based the future is always a little unknown. But I hope to be able to continue to have the opportunities to work for great international companies like Cirque Eloize touring the world, meeting new people and cultures, I would like to keep doing many different styles of shows so I continue to grow and develop as an artist. New Zealand will still always be home and eventually I would like to base myself in New Zealand again, maybe starting a community gym with my brothers incorporating sport and circus.

JUDGED We get the inside scoop from those with the final say on style at this year’s Westfield Riccarton Style Stakes fashion and ZM Body Art competitions at Addington Raceway.

ith more than $20,000 worth of prizes, dressing up has a whole new meaning when it comes to Cup and Show Week. As jockeys and their steeds thunder around the track at Addington Raceway, plenty of fillies will be lining up to take the title of The Best Dressed Lady at the NZ Trotting Cup Day on Tuesday, November 14. She who ends up holding the crown will receive the golden tickets to fly to Buenos Aires and back, while The Best Dressed Man will certainly not be left empty-handed, with a holiday in Brisbane including flights and seven nights’ accommodation to enjoy. Plus, there are jewellery, vouchers, beauty packs and a magnum of Lindauer to consider – who wouldn’t dress up for a slice of the pie? The judging panel offers an even split between the genders, with disc jockey duo Stacey “Stace” Daniels (MC) and Paul “Flynny” Flynn, fashion expert Luke Bettesworth and stylist Jackie O’Fee. As the first fashion event of Cup Week, we thought it best we go behind the scenes to source some insider tips from the very people waiting to be impressed.

PAUL FLYNN Best known as: Stace & Flynny on The Hits Pet Cup Day peeve: I once packed all my clothes except one shoe… So I had to wear trainers. So my pet Cup Day peeve would be forgetting key clothing. Best way to impress him: For guys, wearing a really nice fitting suit, clean shoes and being groomed nicely. Maybe with a dapper hat or a nice hair do as well. One tip for first-time entrants: Pace yourself because it’s a long day, especially because you still want to hit the d-floor after!

JACKIE O’FEE Best known as: Owner of Signature Style Pet Cup Day peeve: Not being able to award more prizes! Best way to impress her: Focus on ALL the details. If you make your own hat, for example, make sure the finish is exceptional; if you are wearing open-toed shoes make sure your feet are perfectly pedicured. Details, details, details. hristchurch’s Cup and Show Week is drawing ever closer, so we’re taking a look at the racing events from around the world that have influenced it, and helped shape it into the social staple that it is today. From the history of the racing tradition itself, to the origins of dress codes we’re familiar with today, we give you all the information you need to approach this racing season with your head and heels high.

DUBAI WORLD CUP Running annually on the last Saturday in March, this United Arab Emirates-based race has carved out a reputation for itself in recent years as the biggest social and sporting occasion in Dubai’s calendar. The world’s richest race, with a purse of NZD$14 million, the event naturally draws in racing and entertainment elite alike from around the globe. Attendance of the races is an opulent affair in itself, with ticketing options within the state-of-the-art Meydan Racecourse starting with outdoor grandstand seating available for a modest $230. Access to the exclusive Cigar Suite, which is replete with food and beverage options and prime position over the finish line and Parade Ring, sets guests back $1800 per ticket.

Naturally, the event itself is about so much more than the on-track action. The curtainraiser event, which has become known as Super Saturday, takes place a couple of weeks before the Cup itself, and has earned itself a reputation as something of a dress rehearsal for the main event, allowing jockeys, trainers, and fashionistas to refine their performance. The World Cup weekend itself features a televised opening ceremony to rival the Olympics Games, and traditionally closes with a firework display, although 2017’s performance saw the addition of a drone show, with LED-lit drones flying in formation against the night sky. The final drawcard of the event is always the concert, which is headlined by an international star, and is attended exclusively by ticketholders. This year, there was a 70-minute performance by the elusive Sia, with support from Maddie Ziegler. As far as the dress code in concerned, Dubai World Cup blends its own rich cultural heritage with European racing tradition to encourage a conservative and refined style of dress for males and females alike. Hemlines are preferred to be of a “modest length” of slightly above the knee or below, and recent years have seen the end of strapless and single-strapped dresses, with

rules now requiring them to be a minimum of two inches in width. The 2017 Style Stakes saw 1940s and ’50s inspired sartorial choices take out the top awards – think fitted, tea-length A-line dresses for the ladies, and linen three-piece suits with straw trilbies for the gentlemen – the epitome of restrained elegance. And the prize for best dressed? In 2016, the male and female winners were both rewarded with a Jaguar F-Type Coupe to use for six months – not bad for a day at the races. ROYAL ASCOT Perhaps unsurprisingly, the sport of horseracing as we know it today found its origins in medieval England, when knights returning from the Crusades would challenge the prowess and endurance of their steeds. The spectacle quickly began to draw crowds, and soon transitioned into a more formally arranged event for the entertainment of local gentry. Before long, a betting element emerged, allowing money to change hands between observers and participants. Horse-racing has long enjoyed a close association with British nobility, with Royal Ascot itself being established by Queen Anne in 1711. The story goes that when out riding her horse, Queen Anne herself happened upon a piece of land she thought would be “an ideal place for horses to gallop at full stretch”. She began holding equestrian events there not long after, which soon evolved into the official race we’re familiar with today. Even today, royal attendance is guaranteed at Ascot, and seating in the Royal Enclosure, which was established by King George IV in 1822, is restricted to those with noble blood. Due to this long-standing royal connection, and accompanying reputation for class and elegance, Royal Ascot remains one of England’s premier events at which to see and be seen. Every year, the threeday meet hosts 300,000 guests – who can expect to pay over $500 for premium-level entry and access. The Ascot experience can be enhanced by attending private drinks in the Furlong Club, which offers caviar and smoked salmon, partaking in Pimm’s at the Gazebos, or travelling to the racecourse by way of the Ascot Express, a train chartered from London directly to the grounds. Dress code regulations are stringent, particularly for ladies – chief among them being a ban on strapless, off-the-shoulder or halter-necked dresses, as well as any

garment exposing the midriff. While trouser suits are now welcome, the pieces must be of matching material and colour, and, like jumpsuits, are required to be of full length, that is, to the ankle. While hats are an iconic part of Ascot attire for both men and women, fascinators are prohibited, and all headwear must have a solid base of at least 10cm in diameter. Within these parameters, however, Ascot millinery has seen a lot of experimentation within recent years, with tradition meeting high-fashion to create some truly avantgarde and, at times, gravity-defying designs. While many women still opt for a conventional hat, unique creations by the likes of Philip Treacy (who designed Princess Beatrice’s iconic Royal Wedding headpiece) are becoming increasingly common sights at the track. KENTUCKY DERBY An American cultural institution since its establishment in 1875, the traditions and rules of Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby find their heritage in European races. The Derby’s founder, Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., had experienced the racing events of England and France, and, deeply influenced by them, sought to bring their sporting sophistication back to his own shores. While the event, held on the first weekend of May every year in Louisville, Kentucky, in the heart of America’s South, was initially inspired by the culture and refinement of European aristocracy, it has also taken on a unique identity, becoming steeped in Southern traditions of its own. Hat-wearing is a particularly strong part of the Kentucky Derby tradition, and is thought to stem all the way back to the introduction of the race in the late 1800s. While English and French women of noble blood were used to donning their finery for a day at the races, the notion of dressing up for a sporting event was foreign to highbred American women, as was the very concept of socialising in a setting that hosted gambling and alcohol. In response, organisers framed the event as an opportunity to showcase their fashion credentials, overcoming guests’ reservations while also making the Derby synonymous with style and elegance. While times and fashions have moved on considerably since the advent of these horse races, the custom of hat-wearing and formal dress in general have remained, as both a nod to a well-respected tradition and an

acknowledgement of the timeless elegance of the style. The uniquely Southern tradition of drinking mint juleps at the Derby has been around since the races’ advent. The cocktail combines Kentucky bourbon whiskey with mint to both celebrate the state’s most iconic liquor, and help combat the oftenoppressive Southern heat. While they’ve always been a feature, the story goes they became a centrepiece after visiting Polish actress, Helena Modjeska, expressed her love of them after sampling them at the track. It’s thought that over 100,000 are served up every year, so if you’re thinking of attending the Derby, a mint julep in hand is a must!

What’s more, in true American style, a huge amount of festivities have sprung up around the race, turning what is known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sport” into a twoweek-long festival. One of the older traditions dates back to the 1950s, and, presumably inspired by the debutante culture of the time, sees five young women selected from hundreds of applicants (known as Derby Princesses) to attend social events as representatives of the Derby. Traditions have also grown to incorporate the largest firework show in North America, a hot air balloon show, and one of the most elaborate street parades in the US.

MELBOURNE CUP Run every November at Flemington Racecourse, the Melbourne Cup is perhaps the horse-racing event New Zealanders are most familiar with, with hundreds of Kiwis flocking to the races each year. The first formal horse race of the time was run on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in 1840, when the city of Melbourne itself was

little more than a fledging settlement. As the city grew, so too did the racing tradition, with the meet locating itself at Flemington and adopting its official name from 1841. As the years passed, the crowds only continued to grow, attracting 100,000 people by 1880, a figure that has held steady over the following 137 years. While the general admission area at Cup Day today has no official dress code regulations, allowing guests the freedom to wear whatever they feel most comfortable in, that all changes if you wish to enter the Members’ Enclosure, which is governed by strict codes of modesty similar to those seen at Royal Ascot. Fashion pundits are already making predictions for 2017’s winning looks, hinting that embracing spring with breezy florals and pastels could well be the way to go, especially if paired with a contemporary headpiece. Colour and a sense of fun are very much encouraged, while black and white are best avoided on Melbourne Cup Day itself, as they are the dominant fashion feature of Derby Day, which traditionally takes place on the preceding Saturday.

Previously, all women adhered strictly to traditional rules regarding hemlines and hats, but when Shrimpton made her much-anticipated entrance, she was dressed in a white minidress which ended a shocking five inches above the knee, with no stockings, gloves or hat; a completely outrageous deviation from the norm. Looking back, many now say that this incident and the publicity it received helped Australia to fully embrace 60s fashion, and the high hemlines and boxy cuts that went with it.   Fifty years later, another woman made waves at Flemington, but for entirely different reasons. aving lived in the quiet, leafy suburb of Merivale for many years, Jan and Garry Cliff jumped at the chance to build a property on the very same street they already called home. In a rare opportunity, a house across the street from their own came up for sale, and the couple, already aware of how special the tranquil location and north-facing aspect were, moved quickly to make it their own. The site was already home to a gorgeous cedar-weatherboard cottage, which, according to Jan, was “just too good to demolish�. To avoid resigning it to this fate, the cottage itself was sold and moved from the site, and in doing so, a new house was born. No strangers to the building process, the Cliffs approached their architect with a proposed floor plan of their own, only to be pleasantly surprised to discover that their plans were an almost-identical match to those drawn up by the professionals. Taking it as a good omen, the couple proceeded with the build from those very plans, only making the odd tweak along the way.

Making space for a six-car garage was a non-negotiable element of the build, as Garry, an avid race and rally car driver, needed room for his prized motors, not to mention his extensive collection of trophies. The space required for this means that the L-shaped garage is tucked away down the driveway, preventing it from dominating the view at street level, while also allowing the living areas to enjoy the best of the natural light the location offers. While the design of the three-bedroom, four-bathroom home is undeniably effective,

What’s more, the spacing between certain windows has been informed by the sizes of artworks the couple already owned, giving a tailor-made feel to the home’s interior.

Mindful! Lynette McFadden Mine is an occupation that constantly generates a sense of extreme urgency punctuated by deadlines, and the feeling of never having enough time. The tasks at hand include numerous meetings, mentoring sessions, writing articles, training, and running auctions, as well as all the work associated with owning a large business and leading a team of 130 unique and dynamic individuals. I’m constantly asking myself if I’m allocating the right amount of time to the most important tasks. This isn’t exclusive to real estate. The wise allocation of time rather than wasting it on low priorities and meaningless acts (including excessive social media and being tied into other people’s problems); this is a battleground both in life and business. Back in the 1970s, in his book The Harried Leisure Class, Swedish economist Staffan Burenstam Linder pointed out that time is our scarcest resource and that a society’s increase

in prosperity doesn’t necessarily bring with it an increase in peace and harmony: “In reality it’s been the contrary as we all seem that much more hectic.” Forty years later, this has only amplified. Everyone I meet has many of the same time challenges, be they male or female, working inside or outside of their home. We all seem to work against the clock and the prospect of sighting, let alone smelling, roses seems like a fantasy. Every year whilst planning and determining my entire business tempo I promise myself to travel a little more consciously, using my time and skills more sensitively, but in the real world it’s a big ask. So, after some contemplative reading over a recent break, I’ve decided to share some of my trusty old time tips and a couple of new ones. 1. Get enough sleep. No matter how good your intentions about managing yourself and your time, if you don’t get enough sleep the battle is already lost.

CHRISTCHURCH CATHEDRAL:

ChristChurch Cathedral today.

A decision has been made on the future of our central city cathedral, but what does this mean? Words Richard Dalman

F

inally we have a direction for the ChristChurch Cathedral – in early September the Christchurch Anglican Diocesan Synod decided to “reinstate” the Cathedral. The main body of the Cathedral, the tower and spire, and the ancillary buildings will all be reinstated, in that order of priority. Now we have a decision and direction, let’s get on with it. For too long the impact of the ruin in the centre of the city has hindered adjacent development. The building left to disintegrate through weather and aftershocks has come to represent the slowness of our city rebuild.

The key question for me is what does the Synod mean by “reinstatement”? This word suggests returning the Cathedral to exactly the way it was before, in all of its neo-Gothic glory, but also with all of its 19th century issues that could be seen as compromises in its use. No doubt there will be new structure and services provided to bring the building up to a more modern and comfortable standard. And that is where my issue lies. If all we want to do is “reinstate”, then these things surely won’t be done. But if we “conserve” then we can incorporate these necessities, and other “upgrades” as well.

AT LAST… I would prefer a conservation approach over a reinstatement approach, and perhaps this is what the Synod plans, but just haven’t articulated it very well to date. A conservation approach starts with a conservation plan that outlines the history and identifies all the values that the Cathedral possesses, such as architectural, cultural, urban design, historic, amenity, spiritual etc. These values will drive the approach as to how to repair and rebuild the building. They will also enable us to consider changes to the original building as well as possible new contemporary “interventions”. And what would we reinstate back to? Take the spire, for example: is it to be reinstated to Sir Gilbert Scott’s original design, or Benjamin Mountfort’s altered design (as built)? And if the latter, is it to the original that was built, or the firebricks and copper repair after the 1888 earthquake, or the timber and copper repair after the 1901 earthquake? If we accept a 1901 non-original spire design brought about by earthquake structural requirements, what similar structural changes could we accept now for the same reasons? And what changes would be accepted to allow for more modern liturgical approaches, or to allow for the tourists, or whatever becomes important in the future? There are many decisions that will require careful thought. Buildings need to change over time in order to remain relevant, even cathedrals (hence the addition of a visitor’s centre a number of years ago). What other changes need to be made at this stage and how can we take this opportunity to incorporate them in a clever, appropriate and perhaps contemporary way? I trust the synod and its architects will be looking at how the building can be conserved and not merely reinstated. I look forward to seeing the proposed drawings and final built result.

Frequently I hear from parents looking at Rangi Ruru for Year 7 and 8 that what appeals to them is our small class numbers and our approach to personalised learning. We talk about Rangi being a family for life and it is on special days like this that we see our girls’ pride in their school as they show their grandparents around school. It has been another successful term with regards to our sporting achievements. Our Hockey and Basketball teams are Canterbury Champions (again) with our Hockey team winning 2nd place at the Federation Cup which is the top National tournament held recently in Napier. Losing narrowly to St Cuthbert’s from Auckland in the final we came away with the knowledge that Rangi Ruru is the Top South Island Girls’ School in hockey fantastic results of which we are very proud.

​ here is a lot of talk T about energy-efficient homes and eco-friendly houses these days, but where do you start?

M

ost of us don’t have the luxury of building from scratch, yet still wish to run a home that’s as energy efficient as possible. Fortunately, a few simple changes can make all the difference. Get your hot water temperature right. Controlling your hot water temperature is something many of us don’t consider doing, but it can save you money in the long run. Water should be 60ºC at the cylinder and no more than 55ºC at the tap. Depending on your cylinder, you may need a plumber to adjust your thermostat. Insulation is also key to ensuring an energyefficient home. Sort out your ceiling insulation first. Hot air rises so to keep the warmth in focus on your ceiling first then look at other areas such as the walls and underfloor. A good start if you are looking to start being energy efficient is using natural resources like solar and gas in your homes. Solar hot water is a heating system that uses solar panels fitted to your roof to collect heat from the sun and use it to heat up the water which is then stored in your hot water cylinder, while gas is a clean, convenient energy source that compliments Solar hot water, heating your home, cooking the perfect meal or enhancing your outdoor entertaining area. From experience, you will typically be able to turn your hot water off for nine months of the year. A dual-fuel household (combination of solar, gas and electricity) is more energy efficient than a household using only electricity. n my books the most obvious sign of spring is flowers. You know its almost here when the daffodils in Bealey Ave poke their heads above the ground; you know its really here when the flowering cherries lining Hagley Park are in full blossom – and what a stunning sight they are. However, for the last few decades, flowers have been somewhat ‘of out step’ with contemporary New Zealand landscape design trend. This was partly driven by a fresh appreciation of the use of native species in residential garden design and perhaps also a reaction to the annual borders that were once a gardening mainstay in the suburbs, with marigolds, begonias and lobelia planted neatly in rows. It seems the tide is turning again, and thanks to the current school of European and American garden designers, flowers are moving into the forefront of cutting-edge design. If you’re not convinced, just take a quick look through Pinterest and you’ll see what I mean, as flowering perennials are the order of the day. The benefits of including flowering shrubs and perennials in your garden and landscape design are obvious. Flowers will bring an injection of colour, scent and life to an outdoor

space. Flowers also provide nectar and pollen for bees, encouraging pollination which is hugely important to our environment and economy. Last summer it was amazing to see the huge numbers of bees on my ‘Blue Hills’ salvia and ‘Autumn Joy’ sedum. If you are looking to introduce flowers to your garden space, you don’t have to go out and buy multiple punnets of annuals. Why not start off slowly and try a modern flower hybrid providing long flowering, high health and little maintenance requirements. On a shady garden bed, why not try Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’. In flower for almost six months, this stunner opens to a lime-green flower that fades to white, with a distinct diamond shape. It sits well with other shade-loving leafy plants. On a sunny north-facing bed, you can’t go past coneflowers like ‘White Swan’ or straight Echinacea purpurea to draw attention to your efforts. They’ll flower for months and will even happily grow in a heavier/clay soil which so many of us in Christchurch inherit. Plant them in a group to maximise the impact. If you give it a go, the bees will thank you and you may even be rewarded with a free supply of fresh cut flowers to brighten up the inside of your home this summer.

Where the wind blows… It might be Wellington which is known as wind-battered, but Christchurch also gets its fair share of bluster. Although temperatures are rising, and the clocks going forward gives us more time to enjoy the outdoors, remember that wind can provide the death knell to comfortable outdoor entertaining. The Canterbury nor’wester commonly peaks at this time of year. The distinctive arch cloud formation signals its arrival, as do hot, dry and often ferocious gusts. Whilst the nor’west might warm things up, its strong and unpredictable nature can hamper enjoyment of the outdoors. An even bigger curse on outdoor entertaining is the notorious Christchurch easterly. The sun can be beating down with not a cloud in the sky, but an easterly will soon rob all heat from your party and have guests scurrying inside for warmth. Let’s be honest, in a bitter Southerly, the best place is indoors so there’s no need to tackle this one! Protection from wind is just as vital as from sun and rain to maximise the comfort of your outdoor living. Effective shelter from wind not only benefits your guests - but also young, or less wind tolerant plantings in your garden. Direction The first thing to consider with screening is wind direction. If you are planning to build, think carefully about the best orientation and design to mitigate the impact of wind. If revamping an existing outdoor space which isn’t ideally located, consider how plants and screening can be used to minimise the wind. Post quake Christchurch has seen a significant increase in new subdivisions, many of which have been designed and constructed without any trees or vegetation. This has created major wind tunnels. Without any trees or vegetation as a barrier, the wind will slam your property with force! Wind screening around your property will not only allow increased enjoyment of outdoor spaces, but it will also protect your home. Banging doors, slamming windows, flying umbrellas - all have potential to cause damage.

Types of wind shelter • Walls and screens: Although more costly than a planted shelter, a man made shelter will be effective as soon as completed. Wind can be very efficiently deflected from often-used outdoor spaces like decks and patios. Heat can be trapped around swimming pools and spas. Timber and metal provide strong barriers but using clear material such as glass will ensure views are preserved. Care must be taken to ensure man made wind screens are constructed with sufficient strength to withstand the exertion of wind. • Blinds & Vertical louvres: Both functional and stylish, louvres and blinds have the advantage of being movable, and able to accommodate changes in wind direction (or opened completely in still weather). • Planting: Plantings such as hedges and shrubs can be used to protect your entire property (for example the classic agricultural ‘shelter belt’) or smaller sections within your property. Planted shelter will block 25-60% of the wind but some permeability may be desired in spaces where a cooling breeze will provide relief in stifling heat. Your landscape architect will advise you on which wind-resistant plants will work best with your specific site. • Hardscaping: With clever planning, larger structures such as pools, spas and outdoor rooms can be constructed to divert wind from your outdoor living areas. You can even design wings around your BBQ to block wind and get food sizzling far more efficiently! TRUTH TO MATERIALS Anne Hudson explores the relationship between sculptures and the raw materials from which they are derived, through the work of Doug Neil.

T

he work of Doug Neil speaks of ‘truth to materials’, a reconciliation of artistic pursuit and the intrinsic quality of the rock he carves. The New Zealand landscape offers materials in the form of marble, granite and volcanic basalt, all produced millennia ago. The stone itself reveals fiery origins; compressed, warped and then eroded by wind and water. You do not need to be a geologist to admire nature’s beauty. Familiar patterns appear in the landscape whether it is rivers, creeks, lakes, cliffs, mountains or coastlines. In Jungian theory, an archetype is a primitive mental image inherited from our early human ancestors which is now present in

our collective unconscious. These are shapes and patterns we, as human beings, can all recognise. As Doug Neil works, the “endless shaping, cutting, grinding and breaking” reveals these forms within the rocks, creating strong images which still show the hand of their maker. As a result of this truth, his sculptures sit with ease in their surroundings, whether it is rural or urban, empathising rather than competing with their landscape. When Doug Neil arrived in New Zealand from America in 1990 he said, “I saw everything in a new light.” He could start all over again, inspired by this new environment. As a land of immigrants and travellers, we are all aware of this feeling. Each land has its own form, colour and light, and experiencing it not only excites our senses but also gives us a new appreciation of where we are from. For Neil, he felt he had found a new primal landscape, one where he could “release new forms from those lying dormant in the earth for millions of years”. Neil says he sometimes feels like the Greek character Sisyphus – doomed to the “eternal push of the boulder uphill”. Unlike

Sisyphus, however, Neil has learnt his lesson and is aware that he can only work with what nature has given him – not conquer it. He says he finds refuge in Janet Frame’s take on life: “Living in New Zealand, would be for me, like living in an age of mythmakers; with a freedom of the imagination among all artists because it is possible to begin at the beginning and to know the unformed places and to help to form them.” Janet Frame worked that magic with words, while Doug Neil performs the same creative ritual with rock. It is difficult to write about Doug Neil as his own words seem so much more apt. He says, “A little theft from the gods, stolen with caution. You can’t create anything finer than the miracle nature has already conceived.” I think we are lucky to have an artist who demonstrates such a love, sensitivity and respect for his home. Doug Neil has shown at many New Zealand sculpture shows and galleries. His work will be part of Art in a Garden, held at Flaxmere, near Hawarden in late October. I am sure his work will look magnificent against the backdrop of the Southern Alps.

Serious shoulder pads have been a giant “don’t” since the ’80s but strong shoulders should make a comeback. A silky shoulder padded top tucked into high-waisted jeans and great heels.

In their spring/summer collections, what do you think fashionistas are going to get most excited about? Twenty-Seven Names’ July Dress in a gorgeous cornflower blue, v-neck dress with floaty bell sleeves. This dress is 100% linen making it incredibly comfortable and breathable through summer. Gingham is making a strong comeback this spring/ summer and who better to wear than Twenty-Seven Names. Wynn Hamlyn showcased its new collection with models walking past greenhouses on floral carpets. The fashion of chunky brown woollen knits, bright-red asymmetrical garments, khaki, navy blue and denim created a cool 70s vibe, which contrasted against the garden setting. 3. Celebrities paraded in underwear. The Bachelor’s Matilda Rice, Black Fern Portia Woodman and All Blacks Sevens DJ Forbes and All Blacks Damian McKenzie and Scott Curry all took to the runway for Jockey. 4. Paint was splattered all over the runway. Ovna Ovich’s Artistic Runway saw models strut barefoot down a very colourful runway. The collection perfectly matched the runway in black, navy, khaki, cream and a mustard yellow taking centre stage. 5. The models held placards. WORLD opened Fashion Weekend with a blast of sparkly leopard print against bold floral patterns. We would expect nothing less than ‘wow’ from WORLD. 6. Neon lights lit it up. Kate Sylvester models walked down the runway alongside a stream of these lights. Modelling fashions of silver dresses, vibrant Oriental reds and cobalt blue luxe velvet pants, it was a spectacular show.

ounder of company The Rubbish Whisperer, Helen Rupp, is offering New Zealand schools, sports clubs and organisations a healthier and more environmentally friendly fundraising alternative to selling chocolate bars with her reusable produce bags. Canterbury’s Southbridge Primary School was one of the first to team up with The Rubbish Whisperer to sell the brightly coloured reusable produce bags to raise money for school projects. Since then, more nationwide schools have come on board. The reusable produce bags are handmade in Christchurch and are designed as a lightweight and convenient option to take to the supermarket and fill with fruit and veges to place directly into your trolley, take through

Naomi Spinsby-Wild walks through the cobbled streets of Dubrovnik, a place of surreal beauty – and heat.

E

ven before the sun had emerged over of the Dalmatian coastline, you could tell it was going to be a blisteringly hot day in Dubrovnik. The air was already thick with warmth, and, more tellingly, my hair was expanding in size like a frizzy brunette peacock showing off its plumage. After fulfilling my personal daily challenge of leaving no waffle-topping combination untested at our cruise ship’s dangerously well-stocked breakfast buffet, we docked at the southern Croatian enclave of Dubrovnik, where we disembarked and trudged, already weary from the heat (and the ungodly amount of fats and sugars recently ingested), towards the waiting tour buses, bottled water and weather predictions being offered to us almost every step along the way. While the city had looked beautiful from the morning half-light of the port, it was truly striking up close. All at once, we rounded a corner and the winding inland-facing streets gave way to a view of the harbour, a glistening inlet encircled by the rocky outcrop on which the historic Old Town was built. The whole scene looked, frankly, Photoshopped. Being that Dubrovnik has famously doubled as Game of Thrones’ city of King’s Landing over the last few years, I had naturally assumed the cityscape was a clever mix of set design and computer animation, an assumption I quickly found to be false. The dramatic cliff-face, the striking medieval architecture, the clear blue of the Adriatic – it was all just as it appeared on screen, minus the impaled heads on spikes. As I surveyed the Lannister stronghold, casting my gaze over the port and its sheltered marina, I thought back to the local history

lesson we were given on the coach ride. For as long as Dubrovnik had existed, the ocean had been its life-blood, bringing in traders from around Europe in older times as well as providing a reliable fishing industry. In recent years, tourism has overtaken as the main contributor to the local economy, but the seaside has continued to thrive, alive with the sounds of outboard motors as charter boats ferry visitors around on private tours of the surrounding islands. The city’s medieval charm only became more evident as we wound our way through more white stone cobbled pedestrian streets to reach the heart of the Old Town. As the oldest part of the city is the closest to the sea, and protected by the ancient fortifications of the City Wall, it is navigable only on foot down seemingly endless flights of stone steps. On the rambling downhill traverse, we passed through a warren of tightly packed historic buildings clad in the same tactile white stones as the pavers and topped with the even more iconic terracotta tiled roofs. Together, these features lend the Old Town of Dubrovnik its title of ‘The Pearl of the Adriatic’ and UNESCO World Heritage Site status and protection. As we made our way down the steps, skin slick with sweat and sunscreen, and footsteps reverberating with the classic summer sound of jandal slapping on pavement, we ducked into doorways every so often to find respite from the heat. Local businesses and retail shops operate out of the quaint maze of buildings with proprietors presumably living in the upper storeys, the shadows from which cast welcome shade across the open track, cooling the

stone walls enough to lean against. Ledge-like landings were built every so often into the stone-face like mini piazzas, just big enough to fit outdoor seating for the restaurants that also pepper the cobbled ways. Once we reached the foot of the steps, the Old Town unfurled around us like a flag in a breeze. The tight, tributary-like alleys all appeared to feed into an impressive, limestone-paved main street, which, like the rest of the Old Town, was for pedestrian use only. To one side stood a huge bell tower, which, upon closer inspection, was also home to a 15th century monastery, presumably a remnant of Dubrovnik’s time under Italian rule. Around another corner flowed ancient aquifer-fed fountains, from which locals and tourists alike drank deeply through cupped hands. Time melted around us as we spent our hours winding through more of the

streets, constantly surprised at the simple, calming beauty of our surroundings. As our time on land drew to a close for the day we meandered, regretfully, back towards the waiting coaches, guided by the shrill voices of the tour guides and, presumably, my massive beacon of hair, the sheer volume which by this point drew unavoidable parallels to the back-combed look favoured by Russell Brand circa 2006. Back on board the ship, the captain filled us in on the day’s weather – a seasonal high of 42 degrees – a memorable temperature for a memorable city. By the time we pulled out of our berth, the sun had fallen over the horizon. The city’s lights that looped the coastline blinked back at us from the inky darkness. We stood out on the deck, watching the coast inch slowly past us until it receded altogether, a light breeze fanning us for the first time that day.

With spring upon us and summer waiting in line, the time has come to shed the winter woollies – and we’re talking about what’s on your face. Words Gilbert Wealleans

I

n order to look your best for the upmarket happenings of the warm seasons, like corporate parties, weddings and, of course, the races, you need some basic essentials; smart threads, dapper shoes, a sharp haircut and, most importantly, but sadly often overlooked, a clean and close shave. Whilst it may be hunky-dory to look like a hunky refugee from Miami Vice circa 1983 at the beach, sporting Crockett and Tubbs style stubble takes the shine off the sartorial gingerbread when one is out to impress. Today there is a vast range of options and products when it comes to shaving. The market is dominated by plastic disposable or cartridge razors packing anything from one to five blades. The theory is that more blades give a closer shave with fewer strokes, and whilst most of these razors

do give good shaves, multi-blade types can create irritation and cause rashes and razor bumps. Worldwide there is a resurgence of traditional shaving methods using both cutthroat and doubleedge safety razors and although these are more time consuming, the results, with a bit of practise and care, can be excellent. For the beginner a safety razor is the best option with a wide variety of styles and prices available, mostly online. The double-edge blades that fit them work out ridiculously cheap compared to cartridge blades too, with online sellers offering sample packs of different brands – a great way to find the blades that suit your own hair and skin. Whichever way of shaving you choose, the most important part is in the preparation, so do not skimp on this. SEVEN STEPS TO A SHARPER SHAVE 1. Give your face a thorough wash, preferably using a mild cleanser rather than ordinary hand soap, which can be harsh, especially to sensitive skin. 2. Soak your beard thoroughly – in the shower is good as you can keep it wet. 3. Lather up with a good shaving cream, rather than the aerosol kinds that may be drying to the skin, and a brush. 4. Work the lather into your whiskers firmly, but gently, giving a thick, even spread. Don’t allow the lather to become too wet or sudsy but keep it dense and rich. It is a good idea to leave it to condition the hair for a few minutes. 5. Shave with short even strokes in the direction of the growth and with gentle pressure. A safety razor cuts very closely and requires hardly any pressure as the razor’s weight does most of the work. 6. Rinse and check for any missed patches, and repeat until clear of strays. 7. Rinse with cold water and apply some alcoholfree aftershave balm or lotion, don your best outfit to step out in and show the world the magnificent peacock you are meant to be.

Audi’s baby sport utility vehicle stands out in a crowd, says motoring writer Ross Kiddie.

he mid-size sport utility vehicle market is rather crowded, but then again it is one of the most popular, it’s affordable and there’s an extensive range of quality product. Toyota and Honda almost pioneered that segment with the RAV4 and CRV, both of those models are still current, but they have been joined by a vast number of other competitors from Asia, and from Europe. Audi has entered the cluttered segment with what I consider one of the class leaders – the Q2. That’s a bold statement considering I’ve only spent four days with the car, but it made a huge impression with its quality build, style and engineering. It also comes with a price – $54,900 – that rivals the two mainstream players in my introduction. However, RAV4 and CRV can boast four-wheel-drive whereas, at this stage the Q2 here doesn’t get Audi’s Quattro system, neither does it get the diesel engine options that are available overseas, but I’d be surprised if it remains a solo product for long. That aside, the Q2 is an absolute honey in terms of driveability and functionality. It isn’t a big SUV at just under 4.2m and, that being the case, it is also going to battle Toyota’s new C-HR, but it translates its compact proportions to a family-friendly cockpit environment. It also gets the familiarity which makes Audi desirable, the trim materials, layout and controls are first-class. I particularly like

the mood lighting when it’s dark, the display graphics with fonts are easy to decipher and the way the satellite navigation display flows around the speedometer and rev counter. The latter is just sheer genius and it is in a perfect position so that the driver’s eyes barely shift from the view out of the windscreen. The Q2 is powered by a 1.4-litre, fourcylinder petrol engine. Before you scoff at its meagre displacement, bear in mind it has a turbocharger attached. Audi is the past master of turbocharging; who could forget the Audi rally cars of the 80s? However, today’s forced induction systems aren’t only there to boost power, they are structured so that fuel economy is a vital component. The key figures are a 110kW power output along with a sublime 250Nm of torque available all of the way from 1500rpm to 3500rpm. The engine is also rated with a 5.5l/100km (51mpg) combined cycle fuel usage average. If you take into account the Q2 weighs in at just 1340kg, it’s no surprise these figures combine to produce good performance and economy. The Q2 will make 100km/h from a standstill in 8.5sec, and if laws allowed it would top-end at 212km/h. It also feels feisty, power is channelled through a seven-speed automatic transmission and it is a beauty with swift shifts and gearing which promotes keen acceleration. I’ve only spent four days with the car, but it made a huge impression with its quality build, style and engineering. road, the engine spins over at just 2000rpm at 100km/h, returning a 5l/100km (56mpg) instantaneous fuel usage figure. Interaction between the engine and gearbox is fabulous, there is no drop off of power, the turbo boost is fluid and the gearbox has swift changes. The Q2 also gets several drive modes available at the push of a button. Personally, I preferred the auto mode which quickly recognised any effort on my part to hasten speed, but there are comfort and sport settings which provide lively or relaxed motion. Interestingly, the engine also has a 2-cylinder mode which activates when there is no load, enhancing fuel economy. I took the test car on a high country loop which took in a variety of tight and open corners. You can lean on the Q2 quite hard, it has purposeful steering and a fully independent suspension set-up which allows for spirited cornering.

Providing the grip are serious performance tyres – Bridgestone Potenza – and they have a wide footprint on the road (235/40 x 19in). Because of their profile they react sharply to steering input, the Q2 is directional and accurate. As a vehicle it handles unlike an SUV but more like a sports sedan, there is little body movement over the suspension while sudden direction changes are manipulated with strong feeling through the steering wheel. Audi have done a good job of integrating the Q2 into its family. Its cheeky styling is offset by a bold grille area which looks aggressive without being awkward. At the rear the electric tailgate exposes a useful load area. The test car was painted a bright yellow and, although that wouldn’t be my choice, Audi’s colour palette is quite extensive and the colours match the cheeky nature of the Q2. More importantly, the Q2 captures the market well, it is the quintessential midsize SUV which will appeal to those who want a European car which is just that little bit in-your-face, but practical as well.

T

here is no mistaking the authentic Mexican feel when you walk into Alvarado’s Mexican Cantina. The bright papel picado hanging from the ceilings, vast array of tequila behind the bar and patterned table linen give it away. The Stevens Street eatery was once the poster child of the September 2010 earthquake, when its premises on the corner of Manchester and Worcester streets were destroyed. Eleven months later it reopened in a refurbished Stadium Sports Bar, next to Lancaster Park, and, although we dined on a quiet Tuesday evening, I imagine the atmosphere is much livelier on the weekends when it hosts live music and dance sessions. To start – drinks. Seeing as we were at a Mexican restaurant, I couldn’t look past tequila, so ordered a classic margarita. When my dining partner asked the waitress what beers they had on offer, she encouraged him to try a Mexican one, before confidently rattling off a list of eight from which to choose. He went with the Pacifico and was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant’s menu is extensive, making it difficult to decide on what to eat. We opted to start with the Jalapeno Poppers – deep-fried, cheese-filled crumbed jalapeno goodness with chipotle dipping sauce. We also ordered the Flautas, complete with a pronunciation lesson from our helpful waitress – well qualified, having come to Christchurch from Mexico. The crispy tortillas were filled with either chicken, or potato and cheese, served with melted cheese on top. An array of hot sauces is available to liven up the dishes, if you dare. When it came to the mains, there were two pages filled with tantalising options. After hearing the Baja Fish Tacos were popular, they received my vote. The three flour tortillas were filled with deep-fried fish, salad, red cabbage, aioli and chipotle cream with tequila salsa adding a refreshing element. My dining partner ordered the chicken fajitas. The chicken strips, capsicum, mushrooms and onion came out sizzling on a hot plate, with a basket of warm tortillas wrapped in a tea towel, with guacamole, beans and sour cream served on the side. The charm of the fajitas was putting them together to your liking. After we finished our mains, we weren’t sure we could fit in dessert. I will say, when you plan on dining at Alvarado’s, make sure you go hungry. But our waitress suggested we try the churros, which were smaller and perfect for sharing. You have a choice of chocolate, condensed milk or cajeta, a goat milk caramel sauce, for dipping. We went for chocolate and cajeta – a tasty, and decadent, way to finish our Mexican feast.

he opening of the Ballantynes Fashion Week is always a crowd pleaser and this year’s one certainly lived up to the promise of a cavalcade of eye-popping styles for spring and the prelude to summer. he bustle of business and the clatter of commerce are again chiming out in the centre of the city and Ruby is now adding to the life of town. The grand opening took place amid the rush-hour tide of homeward-bound humanity and the noise of workers finishing off The Crossing. Bright lights shone out a golden finger of enticement, beckoning all to enter where a feast both of fashion and food awaited, the garment racks rivalling the buffet table groaning under a heavy burden of bounty. Guests browsed the shelves of temptations as the prospect of looking stylishly turned out for spring, was only a credit card’s swipe away.

p the stairs, along the corridor and around the corner brought one to the offices of Lane Neave where a dazzlement of art awaited. Arrayed for viewing, the pieces were destined to fall under the hammer to bring in funds for the Champion Centre. Modern and traditional works stood side by side, making an exciting and eclectic gallery and a treat for the eyes. Following the genteel meet and greet time, the sedate small talk was replaced by the excitement of the bidding, dominated by the auctioneer’s stentorian voice and cry of “sold”! Later, after gathering one’s breath, it was time to rejoice in new purchases and the Champion Centre’s new wealth.

n evening of glitz, glamour and gaming unfolded underground at Sixty6 on Peterborough Street as mysterious figures entered the room. Eyeing the company and sizing up the competition, the disciples of lady luck slinked like cunning cats across the den, to do battle at the table with wheel and cards. In the dim atmosphere of Parisian chic, the bejewelled masks encompassing the ever-watchful orbits sparkled as the wearers drifted between pools of light. The Medbury set were out for fun on their annual “do� which, as always, was upswept and elegant, making for stylish society worthy of a European capital, transplanted to rainy Christchurch.

ainted wonders shone out from the walls upon which they were hung, each one of the eclectic collection acting like a portal to a world of refined creativity, bidding the viewer to enter. The SCAPE Public Art exhibition was to celebrate f artists and the pieces fashioned by them. Browsing room to room, the eyes were entertained, challenged and amused by the display which, by evening’s end was auctioned off to be eagerly snapped up by Canterbury’s art lovers for ongoing appreciation. If art is good for the soul, then those of the guests went home in excellent health.

he gracious old duchess of culture in Christchurch, the Isaac Theatre Royal, was dressed in all her finery for a first night so reminiscent of the golden age of moviemaking. A warm spring evening was nature’s chaperone for the gowned and tuxedoed invitees who walked the red carpet to the premiere of The Changeover, presented to the world in this regal opera house. Beneath the golden ceiling, city society socialised and chatted in anticipation of the adaptation of Margaret Mahy’s story to unfold. Judging by the explosive applause at its end, the film certainly exceeded expectations.
