Car parking enforcement issue heats up By Georgia O’Connor-Harding PARKING wardens could be seen in Selwyn as issues over car parking start to heat up. District councillors will meet tomorrow where an update on car parking, particularly in business areas, will be on the agenda. Mayor Sam Broughton said it was likely the discussion would include how car-parking timelimits in high usage areas are enforced.

Selwyn does not have parking wardens and restricted parking areas generally go unpoliced. Asked by Selwyn Times if that could mean parking wardens, Mr Broughton said: “Nothing is off the table . . . if we are going to have rules in bylaws they need to be enforceable.” His view was backed by longserving district councillor Pat McEvedy who said while timelimit restrictions are in place, they have not been enforced in

the past. “As the district develops clearly those issues will become more important and we will have to go to some form of enforcement

to ensure car parking is shared equally,” he said. The district council is currently embroiled in a dispute over car parking with one of the district’s newest businesses – the Black Door Cafe and Eatery in Lincoln. The dispute is over 12 parallel parks which the business believes are theirs to use as part of a 2010 resource consent on the site. The Black Door put up clamp-

ing and tow away signs on council 120 minute restricted parking signs outside the business in Robert St several weeks ago. The signs have now been taken down as legal talks over usage and enforcement continue. The district council currently does not give out parking tickets or have parking wardens, preferring to take an educational approach to change behaviours. •Turn to page 7

IT CAN be hard to find a car park in the centre of Lincoln, particularly on a Saturday. The town is getting busier by the year and Gerald St and Robert St can be like a dodgem track as motorists vie for a spot. Tomorrow district councillors meet to get an update on what might lie ahead for car parking in commercial areas across the district (see page 1) and the Lincoln situation is likely to be high on the agenda. The E word will be the key: Enforcement. Enforcement usually means a ticket and that is not Selwyn-like. Currently the district council looks to “educate” motorists who overstay on 5mins, 30min and 120min parks. I’ll call them repeat offenders. But whether that system will continue to be able to work in the future is another matter. – Barry Clarke

Plan to improve flood response By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A RIVER gauge could be installed in the Selwyn River/Waikirikiri near State Highway 1 to ensure accurate information on flood levels is provided to authorities during an emergency. A review by Environment Canterbury and the district council is under way over how it responded to the flooding of the Selwyn Huts last month. The Coes Ford river gauge has been pin-pointed as the main problem during the flood response, as it was not updating water level information fast enough. A presentation was made by ECan’s senior river engineer Shaun McCracken at the district council last week. Mr McCracken said data from the radio at the gauge was not transmitting fast enough from the site to the server at ECan leaving services to rely on slightly inaccurate information. “We were unsure if it was the real information or misinformation on the gauge but regardless it was the best information

Weather woes continue for district By Georgia O’Connor-Harding UNSAFE RIVER fords were closed, children sent home from school and properties in Leeston flooded as wet weather lashed the district again yesterday. Surface flooding affected properties in Selwyn St, while waters turned part of Market St into a stream. But by late afternoon water started dropping. The Selwyn Emergency Operations Centre was scheduled to downsize overnight as heavy rain over the district eases. A reduced duty team will continue was scheduled to monitor the rain event situation last night. Should any emergency action be required the EOC would be reactivated. Selwyn EOC controller, Murray Washington said the district has had significant rainfall on top of the previous significant rainfall event in July, which has caused widespread surface flooding. Yesterday morning MetService issued a severe weather warning for Canterbury forecasting 60-80mm of rain on the

Flood meeting By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HORORATA firefighters have met with the district council and civil defence over issues it faced during last month’s floods. The meeting was held at the fire station last week. Hororata had significant flooding with Hawkins Rd and Plantation Rd being the worst hit areas after the Hororata River, Thorne’s Creek and Happy Jacks Creek overflowed. The township was affected again yesterday with the district council sending sand and bags to Fire and Emergency New Zealand in Hororata. Hororata Fire Brigade senior station officer Roger Parsons told Selwyn Times last week the Hororata River had built up badly with shingle and ECan and the

district council need to look at it. Happy Jacks Creek is also in need of being deepened and widened. Mr Parsons said while no solutions came from the meeting the suggestions to have the Hororata River looked at and the creeks widened were put forward to the district council. An informal afternoon tea was also held in Hororata on Sunday to get residents onto the Selwyn Gets Ready initiative and for it to discuss their experiences with the floods.

NASA pilots land at Rolleston College

A SPECIAL visit was made to Rolleston College by two trained pilots working with NASA. Jim Less and Manny Antimisiaris, who are two of the 12 trained pilots to fly the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy plane, visited the school recently. Every year over the past four years, members of the SOFIA team have travelled to Christchurch for a two-month period. Students had the opportunity to learn about the history of the SOFIA plane, including the large telescope on board, where they fly, the cost of each mission, who goes on board the plane and what data they are collecting. The two pilots spoke to the

students about how they came to work in their jobs, what a typical “day at the office” is like for them, and the new flight technology which NASA is working on around

Long wait almost over Leeston resident Caitlin Miles writes about the opening of the Crate and Barrel and the need for public transport At long last – Leeston will once again have a public house. It’s been a long time since the old Leeston Hotel once proudly stood on the corner of Market and High Sts and, while it may have lost its prime spot to yet another farming-related store, at least the Crate and Barrel is set open soon (next week). I, like many around the township, was devastated when the pub was pulled down after it suffered immense damage following the September 4, 2010, earthquake. While I was not old enough to drink at the time I did miss it, and when I realised it wouldn’t be there for my 18th or 21st-birthdays it was even sadder. Safe to say the community was excited when all the rumours turned out to be true and we would once again have a pub and no – it’s not just because there would be alcohol. It’s more than

that. What is a town without a pub? It’s somewhere for people to meet, new and old in the area, somewhere warm in the winter and cool in the summer, somewhere to watch sport and somewhere local to grab dinner. It means the town is coming back. With that in mind it must be recognised that the Southbridge Hotel has supplied many good evenings for the Leeston locals, even though our two towns may be a little competitive.

So thanks Harry and the rest of the team for supplying the fun times – and courtesy van back home. Speaking of transport I am sick of the lack of public transport services on offer here. It’s about time the district council stepped up and provided for the smaller townships. When a survey came out asking if I would like a bus service in the area I said: ‘Hell yes,’ even though I was passed the age of relying on a bus or my parents to drive me where I wanted to go. However, I noticed nothing happened – which wasn’t surprising when the estimated cost each way was something ridiculous like $40 from here to town. What do those costs cover? What teenager in the school holidays could afford that? What elderly person has that money on hand? Why not get a bus that goes from Leeston – and other smaller towns around the area – to places like Lincoln or Rolleston, to then link with other buses? I think the district council needs to seriously take another look at the service they were offering and what would realistically be something people could afford or be willing to pay.

We could park up at work right on 3.15pm and within minutes the box was empty. Cathryn Lucy – Mount Pleasant sold Band-Aids a few years back. Great idea for a fundraiser because everybody needs them and likes to keep the cupboards stocked up. Këllië Smith – Way rather buy something useful over chocolate. Nicole Parker – Our family alone would sell 75 boxes of Cadbury chocolate bars in two weeks. That is $4500 from our family alone. And our kids were not allowed to sell to family or at their father’s work. They had to go round the street and do it. Lots of exercise for my kids.

I’m all for something other than chocolate but others are right in that it needs to be cheapish as most people buy them with change and not many carry much these days. A new “drop and swap” book exchange box has popped up next to the All Saints Church car park. The concept was initiated by the Prebbleton Community Association Committee with an aim to get the community reading solid books. The Rolleston Men’s Shed were quick to jump on board, building the library box. “We thought having a box like this in the community is a positive outreach,” committee chairman Peter Hunter said. If the community continues to support the library box, more could pop up around the village. “If it goes well we can put more of these little book boxes around the community,” Mr Hunter said. The rules are simple – if you take a book, swap it with another. “We will be keeping an eye on the books in the box and if they need topping up, adding to that is easy to do,” Mr Hunter said. Take part in big Selwyn swim event REGISTRATIONS ARE open now for Selwyn Aquatic Centre’s new swimathon event, Swim to Summer. Following the success of the Swim to Rio Swimathon last year, which raised $2300 for St John Ambulance Rolleston, the Selwyn Aquatic Centre has issued a challenge to Selwyn residents to swim a combined total of 10,000km in pool lengths in the lead up to summer. Said Kathy Moore, aquatic facilities manager: “The challenge is for individuals to collectively swim 10,000km before December 1, while fundraising for prostate and breast cancer awareness. We encourage everyone to come along to work on their fitness and help a worthy cause.” Those interested in being involved simply need to sign up in person at the centre, start swimming or aquajogging, and log their laps for each swim at reception. Have your say on lower speed limits By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE PUBLIC will get their say on whether roads throughout the district will have their speed limits lowered. The district council is considering reducing the speed limit to 80km/h on rural roads between Christchurch out to the Tai Tapu, Lincoln and Rolleston boundaries. Maddisons Rd along with River Rd from Collins Rd East to Geddes Rd are some of the rural roads under consideration to be lowered from 100km/h to 80km/h. The consultation was given a green-light to go ahead at the district council meeting on Wednesday. It is part of an annual review which district council staff have been analysing since April and reflects a growth in population and traffic volumes. Townships where lower speed limits are to be consulted on includes Castle Hill, Leeston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Rolleston and West Melton. The district council will also consult on reducing the speed limit to 80km/h on rural roads, including Maddisons Rd, between the Christchurch boundary and extending out to Tai

tion Committee chairman John McKim has made several deputations to the district council on the need to have the speed limit lowered from 100km/h to 80km/h. Mr McKim said lowering the speed limit will alleviate some of the problem but not all of it. “The condition of the road is getting worse and I don’t

anticipate the district council doing anything about it because you are looking at a massive expenditure,” he said. A district council spokesman confirmed it had no further plans to undertake upgrades on the road. At a previous deputation, Mr McKim has described Maddisons Rd as turning into a “super highway” and it was similar to driving a jaguar car down a mountain pass that isn’t sealed. Five crashes were reported on Maddisons Rd between July last year and June this year. The most recent traffic count showed 2896 vehicles on Maddisons Rd travel between Weedons Ross Rd and Hoskyns Rd each day. The roading annual review was requested by residents, committees and district councillors and complies with the Speed Limits Bylaw 2006. The St Andrew’s College duo were part of the junior men’s coxless quad who narrowly missed out on gold to Great Britain on Lake Galve, Lithuania. The crew of four also included

Matt MacDonald and Daniel Williamson, of Auckland. They were the only New Zealand team at the regatta to make the podium. Taylor and Russel were a part of the winning St Andrew’s Maadi Cup team, which not only brought back the top prize for the first time in the college’s history, but the Springbok Shield as well.

Lincoln came out firing in front of a strong home crowd which turned out to see them take on the defending champions in their final roundrobin game on Saturday. Lincoln put together one of their best 35min displays of the season to trail CBHS, the competition favourites, 24-21 at the break. Lincoln fell to an early 0-10 deficit before winger Baue Luxton took over the match with two tries that were both converted by Brett Gillan. Luxton’s second try was a brilliant piece of defensive work, which saw him intercept a pass inside CBHS’s 22m line before dotting down under the posts. He then nabbed another intercept inside CBHS’s territory, which led to Lincoln being awarded a penalty try from a cynical offside play. That would be the last of the scoring for Lincoln, though, as CBHS showed their class to run away with the game in the second period.

Easter Sunday trading hours are to remain unchanged in the Selwyn district. The Council decided last week that it would not develop a policy on Easter Sunday Trading Hours – which means that the current restrictions and exemptions on Easter Sunday trading will remain unchanged. The decision comes after a survey of community views on changes to Easter Sunday trading showed opinions were evenly split – 46% of those surveyed supported developing a policy, while 47% opposed a policy. A survey of retailers showed that while 60% of retailers would support developing a policy, 35% did not support it. Mayor Sam Broughton says the surveys indicated that there was no clear mandate for a change. “With opinion so evenly divided in the community, we were not hearing a groundswell of opinion calling for the rules to be relaxed,” he says. “Although some in the community would have liked to have seen more choice, many people commented about the need to keep the day for family time, and to give shop workers time out.” Currently only certain locations or types of retail businesses can trade on Easter Sunday, including dairies, service centres, pharmacies, takeaways, restaurants, cafes, souvenir stores, duty free shops and garden centres.

On the roads this week

Planned upgrades to water supplies across Selwyn during the coming year will help to boost capacity and ensure a continuing supply of safe, high-quality water for residents.

The intersection of Hoskyns Road and Sandy Knolls Road is being upgraded. Traffic approaching from Sandy Knolls Road will need to stop. Traffic delays may occur and detours may operate while the upgrade occurs.

The Council is continuing to add capacity to water supply systems in high growth areas and improve water treatment quality for a number of townships.

Construction of a right turn bay is continuing at the intersection of Dynes Road and Springston Rolleston Road, with traffic controls in place at this location. Care is needed when driving through the site. Cattlestop cleaning and ford reinstatement is occurring on Algidus Road. Pothole patching is occurring on Selwyn Road and Curries road. Flooding repairs are occurring on Kowai Road, Aitkens Road and Wards Road. Traffic controls will be operating at all sites. Footpath construction will be occurring on Dunsandel main road footpath. The footpath will be closed. Culvert cleaning is occurring on Craigieburn Road and Mt White Road. Slip removal and repair work is continuing on Malvern Hills Road. Unsealed road maintenance will occur on Tramway Road. Traffic controls will be operating at all sites. Sewer line installation work is continuing on Shands Road and Selwyn Road – traffic delays may occur due to this work.

In recent years, treatment upgrades, new bores and capacity upgrades have been installed at Rolleston, Prebbleton, Lincoln, West Melton, Edendale, Doyleston and Leeston. Water treatment upgrades are continuing this year with new ultraviolet (UV) treatment and in some schemes, filtration system upgrades planned for Council water supplies at Springfield, Sheffield, Hororata, Rolleston, Upper Selwyn Huts and Arthur’s Pass. A water bore upgrade is planned at Southbridge, and a new water treatment plant is to be installed on the Acheron supply.

The Council tests all of its 30 water supplies regularly, and uses a variety of water treatment methods to ensure quality standards are maintained. These include secure ground water, UV and filtration, while five supplies are chlorinated (Acheron, Castle Hill, Dalethorpe, Hororata and Springfield). All supplies have Water Safety Plans approved by Canterbury District Health Board which set out water treatment standards.

Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us

Lincoln’s Scotswoman with a heart Isobel Hollick has played a key role in organising successful high tea fundraisers to support women and children rescued from trafficking and slavery. She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding Tell me about the high tea and why it is an important cause to you? I have been part of this community for a long time – nearly 40 years. Five years ago Hagar was brought into the community. Hagar is a Christian organisation – it helps look after women and children who are being severely abused and trafficked. I initiated the first high tea fundraiser at the Lincoln Baptist Church but the first one was done by St Stephen’s Anglican Church the year before. The first high tea I organised was called a Regal High Tea. This year’s tea is our fourth one. There are so many causes that you could fundraise for – how did Hagar stand out to you? It has taken the hearts of many people. It is not just the Lincoln Baptist Church, the other churches are involved in ways in running this afternoon. The Lincoln Union Parish, Anglican, Catholic and Chinese churches

are all involved in helping in small ways. They all come to it. What has gone into making the day happen? A lot of effort has gone into the baking and creating the environment for this year. The theme this year is based on the book The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which is a classic. The story is about the lead character restoring a secret garden and bringing healing to herself, family and friends. It is what Hagar does – brings healing to women and children in Afghanistan, Vietnam and Cambodia. But it also looks into the mishandling of people in New Zealand. Each year we have a different theme. We have had a Mad Hatter Tea Party and The Nutcracker-themed tea. Some people dress up and this year we have got a prize for the best garden hat. We are encouraging people to dress up in early 1900 costumes because The Secret Garden was written in 1918.

How successful have the fundraisers been? We started off with a small idea. We raised $3000 and we thought we were doing really

well. Then, the next year we got $8000, it was amazing. There is no aim for how much we want to raise. We just like to do as well as we can. Tickets are sought after.

Have you always lived in Selwyn? No, I have come from Glasgow. I first came over here for two years in 1974 and lived in Kaikoura. I stayed there and then went home again then came back. I’ve been in Selwyn since 1979. In that time, I have been home twice. What brought you here? I had a brother here and came for a little holiday and then I stayed for a job. I was nursing in the public health sector and Plunket in Kaikoura. I did a lot of preventive work with families – picking up problems before they got too bad. The basic thing Plunket look for is picking up hearing problems and things that would limit a child at school. I used to go into families. You would try and listen to the problems and see if you could help in any way. Home visiting is my passion. I have visited elderly – you look at elderly people getting tired of looking after their spouse or even other elderly people on their own. You look at how you can help. What is the most important thing you have learnt from your time in the public health sector?

of gold and penchant for costumes Each situation you have to take separately. There is no certain way about anything. There are no rules and regulations, you have got to be broad-minded and accepting of people and you have to listen. I take it you find the Lincoln community different to Scotland? I haven’t thought about that – I have been here so long. I came here in 1979. When I first came to Lincoln, it was like a country town. I had a lot to do with the countryside in Scotland – my second home was in Perthshire. The country part and small community is important. The people are friendly like those in Scotland. A lot of Scottish people feel comfortable in New Zealand. I think it is the country environment. Were you into the traditional things Scottish people are known for? I think some people in New Zealand are more Scottish than Scottish people. I have gone back to Scottish dancing but not as much. I am more involved in church work. Hagar has come out of that. What are some of the other church projects you have worked on?

I have set up a healing prayer team. Getting people to walk closer with God, pray with people and pray for healing. I have run home groups. People from church would come and share and meet and pray and study the Bible. The home group is a supportive place. Everybody needs support in life. Celebrating as well as supporting people in hard times.

Are you involved with any youth work at the Lincoln Baptist Church? I have been supporting youth for many years and they are doing well. I have been supportive of the 24/7 YouthWork trust, but not involved. Because I have been at the Baptist church so long, children have been growing up and I have gone to one or two weddings.

You have been involved in a lot of community work. Is there anything I have missed out? I worked at Lincoln Community Care for five years. In 70 years you do a lot of stuff. I worked in Hornby as a public health nurse. At Lincoln Community Care I started the Meals On Wheels service in 1984. I saw a need for doing more. I loved doing the research, finding out dishes. I see you were a regular at pump classes at the Lincoln Event Centre? Sort of. I am not going to pump at the at the moment, I have an injury. Have you always been interested in sport and exercise? No not at all. I have had chronic fatigue for years and then I got better. I needed to get exercise. I went to Zumba and got fed up before I went to Linda Miratana’s pump class for about four years.

What else do you do in your spare time? Gardening, walking, craftwork and code-crackers. Have you got other family in Selwyn? I have got an extended family. There’s my brother and sister and they have got families. I have been married but I have no children. I have precious great nieces and nephews. I call them my surrogate grandchildren – a gift from God Have you always been brought up to go to church? I have got closer to God than I have been all my years. I am at the Lincoln Union Parish at the moment. I have been there 18 months. Being there has helped as well. I think you have got to reach out and find out more about God. I have been to conferences and setting up a healing prayer team at the Lincoln Baptist Church was significant for me. •The Hagar high tea fundraiser will be held at the Lincoln Baptist Church on Saturday, August 26. Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

New national standard aims to improve forestry efficiency A new nationwide set of environmental rules for managing New Zealand’s 1.7 million hectares of plantation forestry will better protect the environment and deliver significant savings in compliance costs, Minister for the Environment Dr Nick Smith and Associate Minister for Primary Industries Louise Upston say. “Forestry is New Zealand’s third-largest primary industry, but its efficiency is hampered by the confusing mix of planning rules across New Zealand’s 86 councils. The strength of this national approach is that it will better protect the environment while also improving the productivity of the forestry sector by applying consistent environmental standards to reduce operational costs,” Dr Smith says. “A major change with these new regulations is the development of three new tools for managing the environmental impacts from forestry, covering the issues

of erosion, wilding pines and fish spawning. “The benefit of these tools is that the restrictions on forestry activities are related to the environmental risk rather than which council area a forestry operation is in. This change is particularly important as 80 per cent of forest owners manage forests in multiple council areas. “This new national forestry standard is part of the Government’s broader Resource Management Act reforms, facilitated by amendments passed in May this year. It follows other national regulations covering telecommunications, electricity transmission, waste tyre management, water metering and drinking water, contaminated soils and aquaculture.” Ms Upston says the forestry industry will benefit from having a set of consistent regulations to operate under. “Planning rules at local government level are subject to regular reviews and there

Funding for water protection project welcomed Government funding for a nationwide project to better protect waterways, by measuring and managing nitrogen on cropping farms, has been welcomed by Horticulture New Zealand. Earlier this month, Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith announced funding of $485,168 from the Freshwater Improvement Fund for a three-year project: Protecting our Groundwater – Measuring and Managing Diffuse Nutrient losses from Cropping Systems. Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Mike Chapman says food consumers worldwide are increasingly wanting information about the environmental impacts of the food supply chain, particularly when it comes to healthy food such as fresh fruit and vegetables. “Environmental sustainability is paramount as it relates to freshwater and the horticulture and cropping industries are very aware of this,” Mr Chapman says. “So it is important to have funding to apply science and research to ensuring the best management practices for our growers to this end. “This project, throughout New Zealand’s key cropping areas, gives us really useful information to target on-farm management practices to meet

environmental impact expectations. Ultimately, we are looking to give growers the tools to manage and reduce their environmental footprint and long-term, robust data and science will allow us to do that. “For arable and vegetable cropping, we are looking to minimise nutrient leaching and sediment run-off – preventing it from entering waterways. “The aim of the project is to improve groundwater quality to contribute to the overall improvement of the management of New Zealand’s freshwater bodies,” Mr Chapman says. The project accesses a network on arable and vegetable farms to measure nutrient losses and collect information about the crop rotation and farm’s management practices. This detailed, unique dataset will have increasing value for farmers and scientists over time, providing evidence to drive management changes on the farm and improve environmental outcomes. It is managed by the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) with funding from Vegetable Research and Innovation (V R & I), industry and regional councils, and the project cost is estimated at a total of $1,040,168. Horticulture New Zealand is part of the project team.

Gardening Pretty plants with a nasty nature By Henri Ham IF YOUR garden needs a little height, there’s no better plant to grow than foxgloves. These striking and colourful plants can grow to over 1m tall and look fantastic in most gardens. In addition to their height, foxgloves are known for the striking and attractive bell-shaped flowers they produce in clusters at the top of their long stems. Foxgloves come in a range of vibrant colours including lavender, cream, apricot, white and purple. If you’d like to complement your foxgloves with other tall-growing flowers, I recommend grabbing some delphinium, lupin and hollyhock seedlings. Grown together, these four will create a lovely cottage garden effect. Once you’ve got your seedlings you need to find a good spot to plant. Foxgloves will grow most places but they grow best in semi-shade with moist soil that is not prone to frost. Remember foxgloves are very toxic. The whole plant, including seeds, leaves and roots is poisonous. So make sure to wear gloves when planting or caring for them. And, if you have young children

around (with a tendency to put things and hands in their mouths), I suggest thinking carefully about where you plant them. Once you’ve found the right place, dig in a bit of compost before you plant. They like a nutrient rich soil so this will help give them a good start. As you would expect from plants with a bit of height it’s important not to grow each seedling too close together – around 35cm apart is ideal. If you plant established foxgloves you can expect to see them flower in around two months. If you decide to grow foxglove seedlings you can look forward to them flowering in around three to four months.

Create a trough - ideally in a sunny sheltered area - roughly 15 centimetres in depth and add Intelligro’s Potato Fertiliser at a rate of 200g per square metre. Mix into the soil. Fill the trough with the fertilised soil back to 10 centimetres high. If you haven’t got a garden bed to plant them in, a pot, bucket or container will work too. Just make sure they have good drainage (holes at the bottom).



Place the seed potatoes 25 centimetres apart in a row with the sprouts pointing upwards before gently covering with the remaining soil.



Continue to mound the soil around the potato plant as it grows to around 5 to 10 centimetres high, as this will protect the potatoes from greening and insect damage. Varieties available at Intelligro:

Side dress crop with the Potato Fertiliser every 3 to 4 weeks at a rate of 30-40 grams per square metre. Give a good water after application.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll know that getting rid of clutter is one of the keys to selling property fast and at a good price. Good storage systems can look cool in their own right, and help organise your clutter. Good storage ideas are abundant and all manner of products are available to make homes more minimalistic. While it’s nice to buy your storage from designer homewares stores, the likes of The Warehouse and Kmart sell many simple products for masking clutter. Fabric storage cubes are a great start for disguising the clutter. They fit neatly into shelves and wardrobes and thanks to competition from the big department stores, can cost $10 or less each. You’ll also find wicker, felt, cotton, woven and metal baskets for a song.

Finally, if you’re looking for more inspiration Google “storage ideas”, search the same on Pinterest, or check out books on the subject from your local library. You’ll be amazed at how many everyday items can be repurposed for storage at the same time as adding design excellence to your home.

Identifying the true build cost Looking at potential house designs and exploring building options can be overwhelming and stressful.

Even when a budget has been established and building price determined, cost over-runs due to overlooked expenses or additional features can push the price up. Many building companies provide quotes that are based on the specifications for a standard build. Any changes will result in an adjustment to the quoted build price with the new figure likely to be higher. When viewing show homes, enquire about the specifications in each, determining whether these are standard for the company as well as which features and fittings are variances or extras to that package, including the additional cost of these. Some building companies deal with certain suppliers limiting the choice of options and brands. Wanting something different could cost more so browse what is on offer before

signing up. This will help ensure you will be happy where choice is limited. Find out the price you will be charged for any deviation or extras such as a composite stone bench top, bi-folds instead of sliders, tiled wet areas or a sink in the pantry. Query too whether landscaping is additional which it often is. As excessive budget overruns can mean undue financial pressure, take time to settle on design features and the fittings you want, before committing to build with a given company. You might choose a builder based on their workmanship, designs and because you feel you can work with the people, sorting out the finer details later but do work through the exercise of costing plans and features before finalising the contract. Build time can also be a cost. For example,

you might be advised that a build will take six months. Ask whether this is a guaranteed time which some building companies do offer. When a build stretches out it may mean more time renting, a need for bridging finance while waiting to move into your new home, or having the added expense of mortgage payments on a partly finished home. Determine the time a build will take, factoring in the period needed to finalise the plan and gain Council consent.

While it is fair for a deposit to be requested, find out when progress payments will be required. These should be after work is completed.
