Heavy vehicle concerns for Worsleys Rd residents By Noah Graham WORSLEYS RD residents are concerned their thoroughfare will be left to deteriorate because of a large number of heavy vehicles expected to travel on the road in the coming months. Timber Group Ltd has contracted two companies to log about 243ha of trees from the Christchurch Adventure Park, which were damaged in the Port Hills fires. During the four to five-month operation, between 10-16 trucks are expected to drive up and down Worsleys Rd daily, Rik Tindall between 7am and 6pm. Worsleys Rd residents are worried city council will not monitor the roads properly and allow them to deteriorate underneath the immense loads, Cashmere Residents Association Rik Tindall said. Residents understood the logging needed to be done but were concerned city council would not keep the road up to a high enough standard, as they often neglected repairing the road, Mr Tindall said. CONCERNS: About 10 to 16 log trucks will use Cracroft roads daily for the next four to five months and residents are worried city council will not properly maintain them. They have heavy trucks removing logs from the fire-damaged Christchurch Adventure Park putting pressure on their road. But that unfortunately is the price people have to pay when there is a natural disaster. The logs have to come out and Worsleys Rd is pretty much the only route in and out of the adventure park. You just got to put up with it. In sport today (page 14) we look at Cashmere High basketballer Okirano Tilaia who has been selected for the NZ under-16 basketball team, and 13-year-old Nina Ericson who won the junior section of the Hanmer Four Square Half Marathon. – Barry Clarke

Youth crime focus in the east
By Andrew King YOUTH CRIME and truancy are the main focus of a police operation in Linwood and other eastern suburbs. Operation Yeast, shortened from youth in the east, will target the worst youth offenders in an area police have called the eastern corridor. The eastern corridor runs from New Brighton, through Linwood, to the central city bus exchange. “It is about reducing opportunities for identified youth offenders from committing more offences through proven methods,” Senior Sergeant Stephan McDaniel said. The methods being used are ensuring all matters relating to youth are dealt with in a timely manner, including youth who have been reported missing, truancy sweeps in malls, libraries and bus terminals, and visiting truants at home. He said police are working with schools in the eastern suburbs and Te Ora Hou Ōtautahi, which provides a student attendance support service to state and state-integrated schools in Canterbury.

Work starts on Woolston urban forest
By Noah Graham WOOLSTON RESIDENTS will get their urban forest this year. Work to transform the Linwood College’s lower fields into a forested wetland began last month and is expected to be completed by September, a city council spokeswoman said. City council is buying the fields, which have not been used by the school since the February 22, 2011, earthquake, from the Ministry of Education and will be part of the Bell’s Creek flood mitigation scheme. Thousands of native flora will be planted on the 2.7ha site which will act as a storage basin, reducing flooding in the surrounding area and is expected to attract native birds back to the Woolston area. Woolston Community Centre co-ordinator Carol Brown said it was great news to hear the project will be completed this year. “I hope it will encourage people to go out and go for walks and meet their neighbours.” She said a lot of people on the east side of the city often felt forgotten but projects like the urban forest helped remedy it.
GIFT TO MOTHER NATURE: The TimberNook Christchurch Going Wild kids were some of the 720 volunteers who braved cold weather and helped clean up the Heathcote River and Avon-Heathcote Estuary on Saturday as part of the annual Mother of All Clean Ups. During the day about 725 bags of rubbish were collected along with 250 large loose items which varied from mattresses, televisions to even an unopened bottle of champagne.
Log truck concerns for Worsleys Rd residents •From page 1 “Worsleys Rd is not in good condition. It’s narrow, windy and hilly – as well as damaged in some places.” Cracroft Residents Association chairman and Worsleys Rd resident John Cousins said he feels for the residents living near the Adventure Park. He too was worried city council would not look after the road properly and was concerned the trucks would cause delays at the controversial Worsleys, Cashmere and Hoon Hay Rds intersection.
He said traffic was bad at the intersection and the number of logging trucks using it each day was going to cause more delays. A Worsleys Rd resident, who did not want to be named, said they could understand why some residents were worried city council would not properly maintain the road. However, she said there was not much that could be done to change it and as long as city council fixed the road after the logging had been completed, she had no problems with the trucks. Christchurch Adventure Park
spokeswoman Anne Newman said she had spoken to residents and there were concerns over truck movements along Worsleys Rd. She said the logging companies were imposing a 20km/h to 30km/h speed limit on their drivers and would ensure there is only one logging truck on the road at any given time. City councillor Phil Clearwater said there will no doubt be some wear and tear that will require repair and the road would need monitoring – which he believed city council would.
City council road maintenance manager Mark Pinner said Worsleys Rd is a public road and therefore is able to carry normal (class 1) heavy vehicles such as the log trucks. He said the road was a relatively low volume road apart from the increase in traffic when the Adventure Park was opened. “We will continue to monitor, as we do for all roads, and will undertake repairs, to maintain safety and/or protect the asset, to the same priority that is applied across all our network,” he said.

Park ready in November By Noah Graham SYDENHAM PARK will be back in use by the end of November. City council head of parks Andrew Rutledge said the park was damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake and repairs were now being done. The Sydenham Rugby Club is excited about the improvements, senior club captain Andrew Lynn said. Mr Lynn said Andrew since the repair Rutledge work began, the team had played their home games on Addington Park and on Hagley Park’s Hospital Corner field. However, Mr Lynn said it had not affected training much because they would usually practice at Hansen Park, Waltham Park and Barrington Park. He said they did not practice at Sydenham Park before the work began because there were no lights and in the winter it would be too dark. Mr Lynn said the players were looking forward to the grounds being completed.

Toy car charity puts a smile on Woolston boy’s face VOLUNTEER-RUN charity Gobabygo has adapted a ride-in electric toy BMW for 18-monthold Izack Lidget. The Garden City and Riccarton Rotary branches paid for the car and supplied volunteers at the handover, which took place at Christchurch BMW. Gobabygo board member Bruce Jackson said three toy cars were handed over to children. Mr Jackson said Izack, who lives in Woolston, warmed his heart. “He may be profoundly disabled, but he was aware he was in the car and loved the sounds – his face was a picture.” Also in the driver’s seat was six-year-old Laszlo Walker, who has cerebral palsy. He can’t walk by himself, which makes it harder to play with his mates at lunchtime. Mr Jackson said Laszlo, of Phillipstown, was immediately keen. “He . . . will be driving himself the moment he’s more confident, though he doesn’t like reverse at this stage.” Mr Jackson thanked the Ro-

By Noah Graham EQUIPMENT IN Waltham, Woolston, Bromley and Linwood parks is in need of an upgrade. The Linwood-CentralHeathcote Community Board submitted in support of funding to be allocated for much-needed equipment that children, young people and adults can use on the parks. Community board member Alexandra Davids said the equipment in the parks was out of date and needed updating. “When you look at parks in our area they seem to be quite old.” She said the parks did not encourage families to go to them because there was not much that appealed to families.

Ms Davids said they needed an overhaul as they were not providing the community with the services they should be. “Some of the equipment is not appropriate. They’re not fit for purpose – they’re a waste of space,” Ms Davids said. She said city council parks staff will be at the next community board meeting tomorrow and hoped an outline of the future would be decided on. They would give an update on what the options were going forward and the board can approach the projects, she said. Ms Davids said once an expected timeline was sorted it meant they could start thinking about plans.

City teens experience country life SEVEN CITY teenagers spent a week experiencing country life. The Hillmorton, Cashmere and Riccarton High School pupils took part in Farm Experience, a programme designed to give the pupils the chance to spend a week living with a farming family and learning about life on the land and food production. Cashmere year 10 pupil Bella Howe stayed at Margaret and Ross Manson’s beef finishing and sheep property south-west of Hororata for her week and spent her time vaccinating, drenching and tagging stock, helping out with shearing along with other day-to-day tasks. She said had not spent a lot of time on a farm before and had not expected so much practical work. “I really didn’t realise all of the things that needed to happen and all of the decisions that need to be made on-farm every day.” Bella said the programme had been a fantastic experience and had opened her eyes to the career possibilities in the agricultural sector. “It was so much fun and I’m so glad I did it.” After their week on the farm the pupils came together on the last day and were taken on a field trip to a range of mid-Canterbury agricultural companies. The programme was an initiative by the Rabobank’s client council.

VANILLA RICE PUDDING WITH MANDARINS AND MINT Ingredients 5 Tbsp Short grain rice 2 Tbsp Caster sugar 2 cups Milk 1 Vanilla bean ½ cup Cream 1 Egg 3 tsp Butter 2 Cardamom pods 4 Mandarins 3 tsp Cointreau 4 leaves Mint leaves Directions Preheat oven to 160 deg C. Grease a 750ml baking dish. In a bowl, combine the rice and sugar then tip into the dish. Pour over the milk. Split the vanilla bean and scrape the seeds into the cream, add the egg, whisk all together and add to the dish. Gently press the cardamom pods but don’t release the seeds and bury in the rice. Bake for 30 minutes, stir then continue cooking for another hour. Peel the mandarins, removing
as much pith as possible, mix with the liqueur and put in a bowl. Shred the mint leaves and scatter over the mandarins.

Directions Make up mushroom stock with 250ml water and set aside. Heat olive oil in a frying pan

Loving your independence? Could this be you? Sally was referred to an Occupational Therapist (OT) as she was struggling to hear on the phone and was losing contact with her family and friends, she was wanting any help that could be useful following challenges since her car accident. She has: Ankylosing spondylitis (which is an illness that stiffens up the joints), Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and is a little hard of hearing. Fracture in her upper back from a car accident in 2015 Sally lives in a two storied home on a hill in native bush with her husband. She loves her home and gardening. Due to a combination of Ankylosing spondylitis and the recent upperback fracture Sally has a forward flexed spine, requiring her to bend her knees to look up. The OT visited Sally in her own home and covered the following info on the first assessment: Energy conserving techniques Regular postural changes to self manage back discomfort Problem solving Sally’s kitchen set up to minimise bending and reaching
Problem solved better phone options and also where to buy a cordless amplified phone Adjusting her office set up to optimise function when using computer Having raised garden beds and garden pots on her deck, Changes in social life since accident and covered the five ways to Mental Wellbeing to maximise mental wellness. Sally feels very connected to her two storied home, which is surrounded by native bush, situated on a hill. The OT discussed the challenges and solutions to remain living in this home long term and provided insights into ways to manage this including the potential of living on one level, use of the community van and possible bathroom adaptations. Summary from Sally’s perspective: Sally reports that she was delighted with the services as: - the OT came to her house and at a time of day and day of week that suited Sally best. - there was no waiting for the service seen within the week of referral. - it was so affordable - $135 assessment and advice - she received good advice that
immediately changed her daily life (so much more than improving communication by phone) - she now has clear understanding of both the challenges and solutions that may lie ahead of her. - This resulted in less worry about the future - She was impressed that the discussion involved her love for nature (still be able to enjoy her garden) and that it was not limited to immediate need and safety She expressed that she feels more confident about staying in her much loved home. Teen runs personal best in half marathon By Andrew King LONG DISTANCE running is in Nina Ericson’s genes and she showed it by winning the junior section of the Hanmer Four Square Half Marathon recently. Now she will turn her attention to the Christchurch Marathon where she plans on running in the 10km race on June 4. The 13-year-old from Christchurch Nina Ericson Rudolf Steiner School clocked her best ever half marathon time in Hanmer of 2hr 18min when she competed on May 6. “I had sore legs as I sprinted across the line, but I was very happy to finish in the time I did,” she said. She is a member of the Port Hills Athletic Club and goes for regular runs with her father, Arne, who used to run ultra-marathons.
By Andrew King CASHMERE HIGH’S Okirano Tilaia has been selected for the New Zealand under-16 basketball team. Tilaia will travel to Perth with the national age group squad in July to compete in the Australian state championships. He said it was a real honour to be included in the team and felt it was well deserved. “I feel like all the hard work, the early morning training and the sacrifices I’ve made have paid off,” he said. His time is filled with basketball, including three school games and four trainings crammed into a week. “Someday I just need to take a day off to let my body recover,” he said.
The 1.85m shooting guard has a fellow Cantabrian in the squad with St Andrew’s Sam Jenkins selected in the team. “We just know what each others strengths and weakness are. I attack the rim and he shoots, so if I can find him on the perimeter, I hit him,” he said. Basketball is a real passion of Tilaia, but he said getting a good job to support his family is his main goal. “I would love to travel the world and do some volunteering and have a go at being a youth ambassador,” he said. TO THE RIM: Cashmere High’s Okirano Tilaia has been included in the national under-16 basketball team.
Cashmere looking to continue winning form By Andrew King CASHMERE WILL attempt to build on their winning start to the season when they take on Burnside tomorrow. With two wins from two in the Connetics schools premier first XI competition, Cashmere is looking forward to the battle at 5.45pm at the Christchurch Football Centre. Co-coach Craig Squire said while they are finding the back of the net on a consistent basis,
stopping the opposition from doing the same is the key to winning matches. “Burnside are a good side and they are well coached, so
we have to be very tight defensively,” he said. “We would like to have a few less scored against us this week, so that’s what we will be working on.” Cashmere scored four over St Andrew’s last week, three of which were scored by captain Lyle Matthysen. “He is in really good form at the moment,” Squire said. He said the whole team is coming together nicely, even in

More than six years after earthquakes damaged their existing schools, Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School are looking forward to moving to a cutting-edge campus on QEII Park. The design for the new schools has only recently been released. Avonside Girls’ Principal Sue Hume says being able to start from scratch has enabled the architects to come up with the ‘ultimate campus’. “It features better facilities than either of our schools has ever had in the past. We are very excited at the educational opportunities this will enable us to offer our students.” Shirley Boys’ High School Headmaster John Laurenson says the schools will continue to deliver quality single sex education. “Students will spend most of their day in a single sex environment – that is really important to us. Single sex
education benefits both boys and girls. Our students will also benefit, both educationally and socially, from being able to learn alongside and mix with students from the partner school. It is a fantastic opportunity.” Among the major facilities are a large Performing Arts Centre (with a 750-seat and a 100-seat theatre), three full-sized Gyms (complete with climbing wall), a Cultural Space and four Sportsfields. Each school will also have a long list of specialist learning facilities. The charity broadcasts live into Christchurch Hospital and Ronald McDonald House four nights a week, providing comfort and entertainment to children having surgical, medical and acute treatment. Until now, they’ve operated out of a mobile van on a construction site by the old parkside hospital entrance. Live broadcasts are 6-8pm Monday to Thursday and volunteers visit children in the wards during the show, playing games, doing crafts and giving parents a break. When not in use, the van is parked at the Z petrol station on nearby Lincoln Rd. Now, the Canterbury District Health Board has approved the design concept for a new studio to go inside the hospital. Choosing the right heat pump for your home

The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. sharpens young adult brains Regular physical activity improves brain function even in young adults considered in their prime and at the height of cognitive ability, according to a University of Otago study. the frontal lobe of their brains, as well as their self-reported exercise frequency. Dr Machado says their “surprising” findings, just published online in the journal Psychophysiology, show that both blood supply to the brain and cognitive functioning appear to benefit from regular exercise in young adults. “This provides compelling evidence that regular exercise, at least five days per week, is a way to sharpen our cognitive ability as young adults – challenging the assumption that living a sedentary lifestyle leads to problems only later in life,” she says. The research also provides potential insight into understanding why people
who regularly engage in aerobic exercise tend to function better on a cognitive level. “I think the idea that young people do not have to worry about exercising since they are in their prime developmentally is rapidly being overturned by mounting evidence that even the brains of young adults can benefit from regular exercise,” she says. “The exercise could involve brisk walking or more vigorous activity, and could be made up of a few 10 minute bouts of exercise, rather than one single block of exercise,” she says. The researchers also found that body mass index was not a key factor in how

Dr Machado says she had noticed over the years that university students appeared progressively less fit. “I wondered whether we might find significant relationships between exercise levels, oxygen availability in the brain, and cognition in the young adults, but no studies had considered this in healthy young adults.” These findings come at a time of increased scientific focus on links between exercise and cognitive health in older adults.
