Hornby mega centre debate continues The Hub Hornby centre manager Jason Marsden writes about the proposed Hornby library, service centre and south-west pool complex

councillors, there always seems to have been more pressing demands on the city council’s resources. From upgrades to the city centre to, in my early days, seemingly constant changes to the New Brighton mall traffic situation. In 1974, the velodrome at Denton Park was completed. Perhaps arguably one of the most significant investments in the

Most significant developments have been via private endeavours, such as at The Hub Hornby, which is privately-owned by around 200 local shareholders. are a Hornby resident, you are part of the community, end of story. This spirit has shone as the south-west of the city has seen huge growth post-2011. Perhaps it is this humble and non-complaining nature that has seen Hornby somewhat overlooked for major infrastructure investment. In spite of a hugely passionate and hardworking community board and city

Is Hornby about to get its day in the sun? Growing up in New Brighton, for me Hornby was just somewhere you drove through when heading south. A main road passing agricultural co-operative Ravensdown, crossing train tracks and a large H sign on the corner marking the mall. Little did I know that Hornby Mall, as it was then, would play such a large part in my future. Only upon moving to Hornby in 2001 did I realise what a strong community it is. Almost like a country town – the Hornby folk did not much care for what happened in the city, did not expect anything in return, but rather got on with whatever job was at hand and remained true and proud of their local history. One major divergence from the country-town analogy is how immediately welcome new people are made to feel. Once you

potentially going to be the most significant city council investment in the area for the foreseeable future. The Hub Hornby will be hosting a display with information on the potential new library and service centre as well as a community pool. The locations and configuration of these facilities are all open for discussion and community input. I think we are very lucky to have such a central resource as Denton and Kyle parks, not to mention the more removed Warren Park. While I know the current sporting users of Denton Park have concerns over potential impacts to their facilities, it is not very often that this community gets to step back and assess its resources to create what could be a model of modern community services. The opportunities for Kyle Park to be upgraded to provide more sporting grounds seems to be well worth exploring given its unsuitability for building on due to being a former landfill site. Whatever the eventual outcome, I would encourage everyone in the community to assess the options and have their say so that Hornby can finally have its day in the sun.
