Protester puts away placard as work restarts By Julia Evans A MAN protesting road works, which he says will narrow the street too much and limit access, has packed in his placard. Murray Turley stood out in the rain for two days on the corner of Grassmere St and Main North Rd protesting about a “killer bulge” that pedestrians will use to cross Main North Rd. Work came to a brief pause last week when Mr Turley stood on the construction site and forced Fulton Hogan to pack up and leave.

Principal’s plea: Stop speeding
By Julia Evans DRIVERS HITTING the accelerator past Harewood School are causing concern for the safety of pupils. Principal Julie Greenwood is pleading for drivers to slow down as they pass the school, saying many seem to Julie have a case of Greenwood “lead foot.” When coming off Johns Rd on to Harewood Rd, some drivers don’t seem not to notice the 40km/h speed limit sign, Mrs Greenwood said. “We’ve had a couple vehicles go through the crossing patrol when the signs were out.” She said police had used a speed gun to catch drivers and took the issue to the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board. The school has since been liaising with board member Aaron Campbell. Mr Campbell said he and the school have been trying to get the speed limit outside the school permanently reduced during off-peak hours. He said that is unlikely to

happen. Outside pick-up and drop-off times, the stretch of road in front of the school is 70km/h. However, because of road upgrades, it has been 50km/h for the past three years. Traffic engineers have said there is not enough residential housing in the area to justify a permanent 50km/h speed limit. So far the school has
upgraded the 40km/h signs to make them more prominent to drivers. But Mr Campbell is worried about the predicted increase in traffic along Harewood Rd due to the planned Western Corridor. If the school can’t get the speed permanently decreased, Mrs Greenwood said she wants people to be more vigilant and slow down.
“We need drivers to actually think what if that was my child? They need to put on that hat and I think that would help,” she said. But for now, the school will rely on its road patrol to keep pupils are safe. “Our road patrol does a fabulous job, but we have to be very vigilant – we wait a long time before letting children cross.”

In Brief ELMWOOD SPORTS HUB The Elmwood Club is undertaking a major expansion of its facilities by building a major sporting hub on its site in Heaton St. The Ministry of Education has agreed to allow the club to utilise neighbouring land belonging to Heaton Normal Intermediate. The new facility will include multiuse indoor courts, clubrooms, gym space and sports medicine facilities. Both Heaton and St Andrew’s College will use of the facilities. Readers respond to a story about the PapanuiInnes Community Board’s objection to a third lane on the Northern Motorway Jonathan Holtslag – If people could simply learn how to drive properly on a motorway that would be a huge help. Speed up to 100km/h on the on-ramp, indicate your intended lane change, stay in the left lane unless passing. These are all simple things that would make our lives a lot easier.
One wonders sometimes if city council shares a single brain cell. I’ve got a copy of the 1968 Northern Motorway plans, which direct the traffic through the Flockton Basin, linking on to the one-way Barbadoes and Madras Sts. There is old Post Office engineers land at the end of St Albans for a park and ride building but successive councils have hurried to tear down the old housing and put in new, preventing the Northern Motorway connecting directly with town. It would now cost millions just to buy up the new properties for the old route. The new route was probably suggested by a kindergarten. Now, traffic coming off the motorway will pile on to Cranford St and all the ratruns are being blocked so that I reckon the journey along Cranford St to Bealey Ave will take 20 minutes-plus and be an utter nightmare. The third lane is needed for cyclists, especially as there will

Rare Vincentian Cross medal for parish’s good Samaritan
By Sarla Donovan BEING GIVEN the rare Vincentian Cross was an experience “quite out of this world” for Russell McKee. The 86-year-old was awarded the medal by the president of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, Renato Lima de Oliveria, for his 56 years of membership and service. Mr McKee’s voluntary work with St Vincent de Paul began in 1961 when the parish priest at St Joseph’s church, Papanui, asked for his assistance in helping the poor and needy. “There were lots of local people who couldn’t manage, lots of poor people around. Usually the money was going on booze or gambling,” said Mr McKee The priest gave him a list of regular clients to visit. “We would take food, or clothing, or school uniforms, whatever the need was.” He still drives around each week to visit clients in need of help. “People are poor managers,” he said. Mr McKee said he had never expected such an award. He was motivated by a desire to help

marrying at St Mary’s church in Manchester St on April 22, 1957. With their diamond wedding anniversary approaching later this month, plans are afoot for a party to mark the occasion. “My dear wife is organising a social at the RSA in Papanui. It’s a busy time.”

Cr Davidson said after watching a video of the simulation, he was more than satisfied that the work should continue. However, Mr Turley said he is not happy with the outcome. He said he was under the impression the city council was going to use a Grassmere St resident’s truck and boat. Although he is disappointed, Mr Turley has decided to pack in his placard and said he had tried his best.
“It’s a done deal – I’d be issued with a trespass noticed and I’m retired. I can’t afford any legal stuff,” he said. Mr Turley was angry because he said the residents had been lied to when told during consultation they would have unrestricted access in and out of Grassmere St. “We were promised unrestricted access in the consultation process and I don’t believe we’ve got that. We’ve got restricted access.” However, Cr Davidson said every day work was paused would cost the city council more money. Mr Turley said he doesn’t want to see the road have to be dug up and redone later, which would be expensive.

Students design gadgets to help needy By Julia Evans SELWYN HOUSE pupils may have just invented some revolutionary tools to help paralysed people. Pupils from year 7 had Adrienne Coleman talk to them about some of the difficulties she faces because of tetraplegia. They were tasked with designing gadgets to help Mrs Coleman overcome the challenges and have developed prototypes to get feedback on. Although some girls made mistakes and had disasters, there were several inventions that particularly stood out, said teacher Simon Christie.
Mrs Coleman hadn’t used a knife since her accident 21 years ago until the first time she tested the prototype made by pupils Lucy Maynard, Emma Mason and Xanthe McElroy. “The knife is particularly remarkable,” Mr Christie said. The girls developed a design for the knife that has the handle at 90 deg to the blade and incorporates a fork on the end, so Mrs Coleman can cut her food, stab it and eat it. She has used the knife to cut and eat an apricot – something which was impossible for her to do before.

ST MARGARET’S College is rethinking its traffic safety measures after complaints about speed, congestion and parking issues. The college’s Papanui Rd entrance has been closed to parents dropping off students before and after school while it addresses
the problems. Associate principal Chris Wyeth said the school is making the entrance pedestrian access only to minimise the amount of cars around pedestrians. Winchester, Andover and Shrewsbury Sts are all busy before and after school – parents are expected to park further from the gates.
“Your daughters are capable of walking along the street to meet you by parking in a safe zone,” Mrs Wyeth said. The school’s entrance on Andover St is for staff use only so it is not an alternative place to drop students off. The school’s priority is creating a safer environment for its students.

HEALTHY EATING: Kidsfirst Northcote has won its ninth consecutive Heart Foundation gold award for teaching children healthy habits.
Healthy food earns kindy another award FOR THE ninth year in a row Kidsfirst Northcote has been recognised with a Heart Foundation award. It won a Healthy Heart Gold Pā-Harakeke (flourishing) Award, which is awarded to kindergartens that teach healthy eating and physical activity. “We were the very first early learning centre to achieve the gold award and we are really proud of our continuing achievements,” Kidsfirst Northcote head teacher, Leigh Downie said. The kindergarten has consistently held gold award status since the awards started in 2010. Bek Parry, a nutrition advi-
sor with the Heart Foundation in Canterbury, said she was impressed with the way Kidsfirst Northcote always shoot for gold. “They do really great work to promote positive messages at kindergarten around keeping hearts healthy,” she said. Kidsfirst Ilam has also been working with the Heart Foundation and in2hula to trial the Hoop with Heart programme. Children hula hooped to music, participated in games and used the hoops to act out a story. After its success the Hoop with Heart team rolled out the programme in other early learning centres around the city last week.
THE FIFTH annual PapanuiInnes Edible Garden Awards were held on Thursday. The award ceremony attracted more than 50 guests as well as elected members from the PapanuiInnes Community Board and members of the Canterbury Horticultural Society. This year, 48 entries were received in the categories of residential house, residential unit, schools and early learning centres and community gardens – an increase from last year’s total of 35. “It was extremely pleasing this year to see the large number of first time entrants, and those who have previously entered, entering again and remaining committed to their gardens,” said community board chairwoman Ali Jones, The awards are open to any residents who live within the Papanui or Innes wards, and it is hoped that in time the awards will be held across the city. Special nods were also given to a first-time entrant, best tomatoes, best yield and commitment to sustainability. The event is a partnership between the community board and Canterbury Horticultural Society.

Rangi tennis team shows potential in Auckland RANGI RURU’S senior tennis team has capped off a fantastic season with fifth place at the national secondary school competition in Auckland. The team which won the Christchurch girls’ qualifying tournament and came second at the South Island secondary school tournament fought hard to achieve the result. Rangi Ruru tennis convenor Anne Bissland said the school has not had a tennis team at the
national competition since 2015 so it was satisfying after a busy season. “The team spirit and hard work paid off and the girls only narrowly missed out on making the top four after some close games earlier in the competition,” she said. “This is a young team with a lot of potential and we look forward to watching their progress over the next few years.”

St Andrew’s teen powers to rowing world record By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S student Seb Caulder can boast that he has a world record in rowing at the age of 15. He was being tested on his speed and strength during a training session prior to the Maadi Cup and managed to row 2000m in 6min 25sec, breaking the record of 6min 28sec. “I was in shock really. I never thought I would ever beat a world record,” he said. Caulder, who lives in Prebbleton, said the previous record was held by a United Kingdom rower, and he knows there will be some others gunning to take his time down. “I’m sure there will be some out there looking to beat that time,” he said. He was part of the school’s contingent of rowers who competed at the recent Maadi Cup regatta. He came second in the under-16 eight and third in under-15 four. Concept 2, a company which manufactures the rowing machines he set the record on, sent Caulder a certificate to celebrate his achievement as well as a drink bottle and towel. Now, with the rowing season over, Caulder will turn his at-

Graham chases triathlon dream By Gordon Findlater A SUCCESSFUL background in middle distance running looks to have set former St Andrew’s College triathlete Ari Graham on a path to glory. Graham, 18, won the recent Sea2Sky Challenge in Sumner, the latest of many achievements. She competed in last year’s national track and field championships in Dunedin, winning both the under-18 800m and 1500m titles. She is also a champion cross-country runner and has previously represented New Zealand at secondary school level. After trying her hand at a couple of school triathlons, she made the bold move to turn her full attention to triathlon and it’s now paying dividends. Graham has taken a gap year following her final year at St Andrew’s and is currently working part-time, and training full-time with the Canterbury Triathlon Academy. Over the summer, she competed in the National Junior Series, which is contested between the top under-19s in the country over five events. Graham not only won the series, she took out all five events. “I was really shocked with how well it went in my first year of triathlon. Every time I competed I wasn’t really expect-

ing to win. I was just excited to compete and learn from racing,” said Graham. Graham has always been a strong swimmer and runner. She has been hard at work on her cycling with coach Axel Reiser to develop her technique and bunch-riding tactics this year. The weeks are busy with four pool, three run and three cycle sessions. To keep it competitive,
she spends most of her time training with a lot of the top boys at the academy. “It’s about putting her into an environment where she’s being pushed,” said Reiser. He believes that Graham shows all the signs for them to be hopeful about her development. However, like all young athletes, there are a lot of factors in the future which will determine what she could go on to

achieve. “If you look at her times and compare that to previous Olympic champions, then she is now faster than them at this stage,” said Reiser. Graham currently competes over the sprint distance, which consists of a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run, half the length of the sport’s Olympic distance. Since dedicating her time to triathlon, she has had the opportunity to work alongside New Zealand’s top female triathlete Andrea Hewitt. They swim together under the guidance of Roly Crichton, who trains New Zealand’s most successful Paralympian Sophie Pascoe. “I used to train with Roly at QE II when I was younger. I’ve always kept in touch with him and when I finished school, I was able to train with him again,” said Graham. She’s planning a month-long campaign in Europe later this year, which she hopes to finish by representing New Zealand in the junior category at the ITU Triathlon grand final in September in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Perry has only been competing in the javelin event for the past five months. She also won gold in the under-14 discus. She has been competing for the Phoenix Athletics Club since she was seven. PEARS WITH PORK CHOPS AND OLIVES Ingredients 2 Tbsp Olive oil 4 Pork chops, fat removed 1 Onion, chopped 2 cloves Garlic, crushed 250g Small potatoes, sliced 2 Pears, peeled and cored ½ Lemon, juiced 100g Butter beans, cooked 2 stalks Thyme ½ cup Green olives 100ml Cream 1 handful Fresh parsley, and thyme to garnish
Seasoning ½ cup Microgreens 2 Tbsp Fresh mint, chopped Directions
Directions Preheat oven to 170 deg C. Heat one Tbsp oil in a frying pan. Brown pork chops on both sides. Set aside. Add onion and garlic to pan and brown for three or four minutes. Add remaining oil along with potatoes and toss until lightly browned. Toss pears in lemon juice. Into an oven proof dish, place potatoes, beans, pears, thyme, olives and pork
chops. Deglaze pan with cream then pour over pork. Cover with tinfoil. Place in oven and bake for 30 minutes, then remove tinfoil and bake for a further 30 minutes. Serve garnished with parsley and thyme.
ROASTED CARROT AND PUMPKIN WITH TAHINI YOGHURT DRESSING
1 Olive oil 1 tsp Moroccan seasoning, or sumac, a powder made from Middle Eastern berries
Ingredients
Tahini-yoghurt dressing
4 Carrots, peeled and sliced into batons ¼ Pumpkin, peeled and sliced
5 Tbsp Tahini paste 125 ml Plain unsweetened yoghurt
Preheat the oven to 220 deg C. Toss the vegetables in olive oil and scatter over a baking dish. Season with Moroccan spice mix or sumac, and salt and pepper to taste. Roast for 25 to 30 minutes. Check to ensure the vegetables are tender. Place the hot vegetables on a large platter. Allow to cool to room temperature while you make the tahini-yoghurt dressing by combining all the ingredients together and season with salt and pepper. Then drizzle the dressing over the vegetables, season with salt and pepper and top with microgreens and mint. Serve.
