The year started off with a real highlight for the Darfield RFC when it hosted the Crusaders versus Highlanders pre-season match at its home ground in February. “That was really something else for us,” says president James Scollay. “It was just massive.” There is a renewed energy in the club this year as new coaches Merv Todd and Alex Robertson take over the coaching of the Div 1 side. It has the club feeling optimistic. “I think they’ll be right up there. I’m not saying they’ll win, although we’d love that, but they’ll mix it with the best of them this year.” The club is also sporting a Div 2 and Colts teams and is pleased to announce that its

u18 side is full of Darfield players. “For the first time in years we’ve been able to turn out our own u18 team rather than having a combined team with another club.” The u13 and u11 ½ teams will be competing as Malvern Combined teams but the junior programme is again looking strong with representation in all junior grades including a full girls’ team which is happily playing in the boys’ competition. Southbridge

The Southbridge RFC had a great start to the after plucking the Coleman Shield from Lincoln in the first game of the season. This year the Div 1 side, coached by Mike Rowe and Doug Maginness, sees many of last year’s players return. “We’ve pretty much got the same squad,” says Club manager Chris McMillan. “We’ve lost a couple of guys – one is playing in the metro competition and one is out with an injury for the whole season. We also have five new players.” The club also boasts a Div 2 team made up of experienced players combined with

a number of colts players. “We think it;s more beneficial for these (colts) players as it’s a better grade.” Junior rugby is well catered for at Southbridge with all age groups represented. Some age group areas are playing in combined teams with Southbridge and Leeston players to ensure all can still participate in the sport. The club gratefully acknowledges the support of all its sponsors, especially principal sponsor Nairn Electrical. Club Day 13 May
