Oldest collegian flew secret war missions •From page 1 Mr Hillary was born and raised in Christchurch. He lived in Opawa before being going to St Andrew’s. He played rugby and tennis, but it was an affinity for mathematics that Mr Hillary said he took from his time at St Andrew’s. “Because I was interested in mathematics, when I had a chance with the air force, I went on as a navigator. You were calculating all the time,” he said He said he doesn’t think he was a very bright student. Mr Hillary was 18 when he left St Andrew’s to join the Royal New Zealand Air Force and go on to take part in the Royal Air Force Tempsford squadron. “I have very pleasant memories of my time there,” he said. Even beyond his working life, Mr Hillary has had a special connection with his old school. His son David attended the college in the 60s and three grandsons, Gareth, Rhys and James Bissland after that – even now his six-year-old great grandson, Henry, is one of the college’s youngest pupils.
