Police to discuss crime concerns By Gabrielle Stuart LYTTELTON police have responded to community concerns about their response to crime. Sergeant Dave Knowles has organised a community meeting next week to address the concerns and present new Lyttelton crime figures. The meeting was organised last week – after months of concern by residents and articles in the Bay Harbour News. Last week Bay Harbour News reported on a former detective, Peter Newsome, who complained about the level of service. Last month it was revealed a community survey of about 100 Lyttelton residents found two-thirds believed the police response to crime was inadequate. Sergeant Knowles said he

wanted to be open with the community, and answer any questions they had. He was invited by the Bay Harbour News to sit down to discuss the latest crime figures, but he said he would rather present them to the whole community at the meeting. The meeting will be held at 6pm on March 16 at the Lyttelton Primary School hall on Oxford St. “We want a chance to supply statistics that are factual, and that way you’ll immediately see that some people’s perception of it is incorrect,” he said. Canterbury area prevention manager Acting Inspector Paul Reeves and Lyttelton Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel also planned to be at the meeting to help answer questions, he said. •Former cop positive, p4

Yes, Sergeant Dave Knowles has contacted Bay Harbour News about our ongoing coverage of the community’s concern over policing in the port and bay areas. Police will hold a community meeting next Thursday where they will present crime figures and answer questions from the floor. Sergeant Knowles said police want a chance to supply statistics that are factual, which will show some people’s perception is incorrect. That’s great news – but my question is, why is it only now that Lyttelton police are reacting? It is because Bay Harbour News and the community have been beating the drum for months. By Gordon Findlater DI FRANCE has received her second nod in as many months for her work on reopening the Redcliffs Tennis Club. The Redcliffs president was named administrator of the year at the Nexia New Zealand Canterbury Sports Awards at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand on Friday night. “There were nine nominations for administrators and they had all done some amazing work so I find it very humbling,” said France. “It’s nice to be recognised, but for me the reward is seeing people out playing tennis, particularly all the kids out there using the courts – that’s the main reward.” In January, she was named volunteer of the year at Tennis New Zealand’s annual awards in Auckland. Following the February 2011 earthquake, France was instrumental in helping the club avoid extinction. She stepped in as project manager, applying for community grants and overseeing the reinstatement of the damaged courts.

When the club reopened in May 2013, she was elected president. Under her leadership, membership has grown from 40 juniors and 22 seniors to more than 130 juniors and 35 affiliated senior members. This hasn’t been her first stint in the role. She served as the club’s president during the early 1980s before becoming inactive

in the sport for more than 20 years. When rumours of the club’s potential closure came to light following the earthquake, she was prompted into action. “I think that was one of the things that seemed to have an influence, the fact that I hadn’t played tennis for 22 years. And I went back because I saw that

there was the need to reestablish the tennis courts,” said France. She continues to be the driving force behind the tennis club. She established junior tennis coaching, first by engaging Stu Chalmers as junior coach in 2013, then by organising Evie Ruegg to take on the head coaching role. The club is currently holding its junior championships, which finish this weekend, and it will be followed by the senior champs in early April. France also established social senior club tennis on Tuesday and Friday mornings, which she herself attends. Along with her husband, Roger, she under takes regular maintenance of the courts, clubhouse and hall.

In Brief POOL TABLE AUCTION The owner of the British Hotel was surprised how much its 50-yearold pool table sold for on Friday. The table was auctioned off for more than $4000 to raise money to help restore the hotel to its former glory days. Owner Rebecca Lovell-Smith was “really pleased” the pool table went to a Lyttelton resident who saw sentimental value in the item. “The pool table got a great price, it will pay a few outstanding invoices,” she said. FIRE BAN REMINDER Little River Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer David Irving reminds residents that there is a fire ban in the area and people need to be wary about potential fire hazards. He said long grass around buildings and sheds can be a concern as people often forget to tend to it. “People need to be very, very diligent,” he said. TOURIST CAR CRASH An American tourist was taken to hospital with bruises after a headon crash on Wainui Main Rd on Sunday morning. Senior Constable Tim Johnson said the woman was driving on the wrong side of the road when she collided with the car, but was lucky they were both travelling at a low speed. “If it had been a 100km/h area, it would have been a lot worse,” he said.

Former cop more positive after meeting

By Noah Graham A FORMER detective who complained about the Lyttelton police is now feeling more positive after a meeting with a senior Canterbury officer. Peter Newsome, who lives in port, met with Acting Inspector Paul Reeves last week to discuss an official complaint he made to the Minister of Police Paula Bennett. Mr Newsome laid the complaint in January after he felt two of his requests for help were “fobbed off” by local police. He was also concerned about the lack of local police on duty at the weekends and after hours. Mr Newsome’s complaint comes alongside growing discontent in Lyttelton about the police coverage there. Mr Newsome told Bay Harbour News yesterday that he was listened to and was told Lyttelton police will work with the community going forward. “I’m happy with it because it will help address some of the issues at the Lyttelton police station and it will start a wider debate with the community over what police are doing.” Mr Newsome’s complaint comes as two residents, Candice

helped him understand and agree one of his requests for help was low on the list. However, Mr Newsome believed police did not have enough resources. Overall, Mr Newsome said the talk was successful and

thinks there will be more communication between the Lyttelton community and police. “I just think we have started a process and there is a dialogue in place between police and the community.”

Hope for Sumner skate park THE BALL is starting to roll for a new permanent site for a Sumner skate park. The skate park was closed down on Wakefield Ave last month after it did not pass city council sound level tests. But the Linwood-CentralHeathcote Community Board has now decided to find a permanent skate park in the area with a full site selection process and a bid for funding in the city council’s Long Term Plan – which governs spending between 2018-2028. Sumner Green and Skate spokeswoman Kimberly Mossman said she was delighted by the response from the board and thought it was “absolutely brilliant”.

However, Mrs Mossman said the group really hoped for a good partnership with city council and although they need to find a skate park site, she hoped they would provide what the community really wants – a combined green and skate park.

“The only way to get a good outcome is to get the community’s voice heard.” She said the Green and Skate group know 26 Nayland St is the best choice for a skate park and understands city council have to go through long processes to

purchase the land from LINZ. However, she said there also needs to be continued and open consultation from city council to the community so it can try to gain from 20 through to 26 Nayland St for a village green and skate area. Mrs Mossman said it has been a frustrating and long process but if city council “talks the talk”, the future for the skate park is promising. She said the children are really missing their skate ramp and have been travelling out of Sumner and into the city to fill their skating craving. Community Board member Sara Templeton said there has been demand for a skate park in the Bays area for many years.

Firefighters hit the streets for cancer charity DONATING: Firefighters from the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade spent Saturday in their uniforms as they collected more than $3000 of donations for Leukemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand as part of the Sky Tower Stair Challenge in May. Chief fire officer Mark Buckley said Saturday’s collection was one of several they are doing over the next two months. He said they aim to have raised $15,000 for the event.

In Brief BONFIRE CALLOUT Firefighters attended a small bonfire on Sumner Beach on Saturday night. Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer Darren Wright said they were called out to the bonfire, which could have easily spread. He said conditions are still extremely dry and people need to take care. HEADSTONE REPAIRS The Banks Peninsula Community Board is asking for advice on whether a building consent is required to fix headstones in city council cemeteries. Chairwoman Christine Wilson said the question was raised by a board member. She said a lot of headstones throughout Christchurch were damaged in the 2011 earthquakes, including some in Lyttelton. She said although the repair of headstones is usually left up to the families, some may not be around to care for them anymore. While repairing the headstones is not an immediate issue, the board wants to have the information ready so it is prepared for when something is done about them, she said.

Not out after 16 years playing Club captain Dan Vann has played for Sumner Cricket for 16 years. His love for cricket has taken him all over the world and helped define his career as a junior representative coach and Chisnallwood’s PE teacher. Noah Graham spoke to him about his time in the game What drew you into cricket? It’s been in my family, my grandfather used to be the president of Otago cricket and he was also an umpire, and then my dad played from there. Obviously, my brother and I started playing and just continued on through. I enjoy it, it’s my passion and my job as well. In my holidays and after school I do a bit of cricket coaching. It’s working on a lot of mental training. How does coaching compare to playing? I enjoy it. I still like playing. I’ve always helped people get better at things. Coaching just came as part of that. I actually got into teaching through coaching. I did a bit of cricket coaching when I was younger and people just said I’d make a good primary school teacher. That’s what made me go to Teacher’s College and I followed it from there. cricket at home with my younger brother. We used to play against each other a lot. We used to live on a farm so we had a few mates from the area come along and play a bit of backyard cricket. Then we moved into the city when I was a bit older. I actually played at Sumner because I went to Linwood College and it’s not a very good cricket school. My friend’s dad was the president – Ray Steel – so I started playing at the Sumner Cricket Club when I was 15 or 16. I’ve played here for about 16 years. What was it like playing for Sumner when you started? When I first started I did okay. It was good coming to Sumner because the club had a very strong senior team. I used to play with the second team but I would train with the first team. So we had a lot of ex-Canterbury players who would help coach us. I worked my way up into the senior team when I was 18 and then there were about two years when I was known as the ‘specialist’ fielder because that’s all I did. Then a lot of the

older guys retired so I became more of a senior player and then eventually I was captain for a couple of years and now I’m the coach and the club captain. I always ran the coaching sessions and have helped the juniors and stuff like that. What’s the best part of playing cricket? It’s probably the camaraderie of playing with your mates. Cricket’s a game where you spend half the time sitting and not playing. If you don’t enjoy the guys you’re hanging out with then you’re not going to enjoy the cricket. We’re lucky we’ve always had a good team. What is the memory that sticks out to you the most? Since I’ve been at the club we’ve won about six or seven titles. When we won them about 10 years ago I was an up-andcomer and didn’t contribute as much in terms of the game. In more recent years it’s been a bit more rewarding because of the responsibility myself and the other senior players have to bare.

The conditions certainly didn’t hamper the Sumner batting effort. Put into bat they managed a first innings total of 294/8 before the match became the Wellington show. The groundsman come strike bowler single handily ripped

through New Brighton’s top order. Wicketkeeper batsman Tom McDonald was the only player to put up a fight launching 95 from 53 balls before he was inevitably dismissed by Wellington as New Brighton fell for 151 all out in the 23rd over. Sumner asked New Brighton to follow-on and Wellington’s form continued as he picked up three for 28 to end the day with 10-58. “It was a good feeling to get there. I’ve had a few five wicket bags but finally have the 10-wicket

match after 20 years of trying,” said Wellington. “I did some pretty good celebratory moves . . . I even pulled out a special celebration, the chainsaw.” He credits his success to “old age and experience.” Through four games in the twoday competition Wellington had taken 17 wickets at an average of 16.23 and strike rate of 28.24. Sumner Club captain Dan Vann said Wellington had done exceptionally well as the pitch was a batsman’s wicket.

cricket for Sumner What’s the highest you have ever scored? Last year I got 141. The last couple of years I have been batting at seven because our team has got a good batting order. Between me and a couple of other guys we would come in and have a tee-off at the end. In this particular game we were five wickets down for eight runs and one of the young guys I coached got 87 and I got 141. He got out just before I did. So we probably put on 230-run partnership and we ended up winning by an innings. Do you have any superstitions? A lot of cricketers are superstitious but I’m not really that crazy. I always do the things that we always do. I walk through the gate when you go to bat. I always mark my centre wicket after I hit the boundary. But that’s more of a routine to keep me focused. Who is the team to beat? At the moment Heathcote is our biggest rival. They’re the top club at the moment. They’re just one of the better teams to play. If you beat them you have had a good day. How long have you been a teacher for and what schools have you worked at? I’ve been a teacher at

Teaching PE in England I found the kids were far less into other sports. They loved football but if it wasn’t football they weren’t too keen. I think the schools were very strict on the way you did things. You didn’t have freedom as a relief teacher. Did not have the Kiwi “she’ll be right mate” attitude. So other than cricket, what else do you like to do? Just any outdoors sports stuff really. I do a bit of snowboarding, golf, I used to play rugby for Sumner as well. I play a bit of indoor cricket in the winter. Mountain biking. Just anything outdoors, really. I’m pretty busy with teaching, coaching and still trying to play cricket as well. It’s pretty busy. Could you tell me a bit about your family? Just my wife Michelle, and our dog, Duke. Duke is a bit of a mixture. He’s a bit too intelligent for his own good. He’s quite a good escape artist but he’s calmed down in the past few years. He’s had a few surgeries. He’s not old, just slowing down a little bit. He is quite well behaved when we’re home. He likes to be around people and doesn’t like to be left alone so he’ll take himself for a walk. My brother and his wife and two kids. He’s two years younger than me. We’re a pretty small family.

Tree under threat

By Noah Graham RICHARD JONES says chopping down an iconic Seamount Tce tree is “disappointing’. Mr Jones has lived at his family home in Mt Pleasant onand-off for the past 65 years and as an admiring neighbour of the gum tree, he is certain the community would not be the same without it. The 90-year-old manna gum has been cut piece-by-piece over the past few weeks after the owner of the property decided it was too much to manage, he said. In response, Mr Jones was one of more than 50 Mt Pleasant residents who signed a petition to show their support for the tree in an attempt to change the owner’s mind. He said the tree deserved to be on the hill as it is a part of the community’s history and although he understood the owner’s reasoning, it is a shame the owner could not come to another solution. “They might not know it but they will become known as the family who chopped down a 90-year-old tree. “Everyone is absolutely disappointed.”

Seamount Tce resident Eddie Du Plessis has spent the last three weeks rallying support for the tree in an attempt to change

the owner’s mind. Mr Du Plessis said he, and five other Mt Pleasant residents, showed the owner the petition. The man listened to their opinions but was not going to budge on his decision. “We wasted our time talking to the owner.” Mr Du Plessis said the owner did not want to deal with the effort required to keep the gum tree maintained. A spokesperson for the city council said the tree used to be on the Notable and Heritage Trees list but was omitted from the significant trees list in December 2015 when city council, submitters and the property’s owner agreed the tree did not warrant protection. “Accordingly, the owner is free to manage the tree as they wish,” the spokesperson said. Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre and Residents Association chairman Derek McCullough said it was sad for the community that the tree would be coming down but he could see both sides of the issue. He said he realised the tree was an important part of the community but there was also parts of the tree that were dangerous.

It has been a constant companion from which we have taken inspiration and strength. It represents the beauty and uplifting power of nature. It is indeed a significant and exceptional tree and it does not need to appear on any list to provide an immense value to many people way beyond the boundaries of its substantial leaf mass. Simply look at it with fresh eyes and try to catch a glimpse of what we see and feel. This tree is beautiful. Please keep it. Ninety years old can never be replaced in such glory. The stunningly beautiful manna gum tree would have been planted around about the same time as our house was built and is part of that heritage. We have a very large garden full of natives and exotic planting and the native birds enjoy both. You need exotic trees to create that diversity and artistry which helps us all work though the trials that life throws at us. We hope you will reconsider this issue and we as a community will be there to support you in its maintenance.

I would like to express the extreme sense of loss I would personally feel if this tree was removed. I have observed it in all it’s many moods, bathed in golden sunlight. Waving its branches in wild weather, it is magnificent at all times. It is a haven for many birds, bees and butterflies. A tree of such stature cannot possibly be replaced. If its beauty and character were taken away, I would be profoundly saddened. We in the neighbourhood all get different views of this majestic tree. Each day it is one of our first sights as we let the daylight into the kitchen. The proposal to bring this magnificent, noble tree down is much worse than disappointing.

News McCaw takes on City2Surf fun run

By Bridget Rutherford GEMMA MCCAW has taken on the Coast to Coast run, endurance races and played more than 200 internationals for the Black Sticks. And, of course, after her much publicised recent wedding, she and husband, rugby great Richie McCaw, kick-started their Central Otago honeymoon with a 20km run. But on March 19, she will be running for fun and charity in The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero Real Estate. The former Black Sticks star and about 25 Aviva staff will run and walk the 6km and 14km events to raise awareness and money for the charity. City2Surf has chosen Aviva as its benefiting charity for this year’s event. Aviva provides family violence support. Gemma said Aviva, formerly known as Christchurch Women’s Refuge, was deserving,and the City2Surf was a great way to help. “To have those conversations about where people can go for help is important for any community.” She would not be racing to win in the 14km event because, for her, it was more about enjoying it. Although, she said a minor

knee injury sustained after taking part in the Coast to Coast run may “slow her down a little bit.” Gemma said it will be her first time running in the iconic event and she welcomed others to join her. “You won’t regret it. That sense of achievement afterwards and that community feel is the perfect opportunity and a great way to spend a Sunday.” Aviva marketing and funding manager Julie McCloy said the City2Surf was part of a 12-week wellness challenge staff were doing to promote physical wellbeing. “For us working in family and sexual violence, we want to help people achieve well-being.” City2Surf event manager Vanessa Fleming said they were expecting more than 12,000 people to take part this year. “It’s amazing for Aviva to have someone like Gemma. NINa COOk - OpeNINg Nina Cook was born in Whakatane in 1967. She was educated in Wanganui and then at Christchurch Polytechnic School of Art and Design where she received a Bachelor of Design. In 2007 Nina established the studio from which she currently works. Nina’s latest exhibition named ‘Opening’ takes place at Little River Gallery from March 11th until April 5th. Ian Clothier writes about Nina Cook’s new works from the exhibition ‘Opening’. “…Sumptuously indulgent, some of the paintings have sensual cavities accompanied by extravagant displays of form and colour that come close to gorging the eyes. Words such as colour, spectrum and visual feast apply equally to the paintings as they do to the tail of peacocks. Such as the collection of thoughts about feathers, colour and visual luxury that assemble on reflection of Nina Cook’s Opening works.” Nina writes about her own work. “The narrative/impetus for this series of works is deeply personal. Broadly, it is about a cycle of profound hurt to intense release. Opening: to force an opening (to breach) through to Opening: to release and truly open up. The process is integral and is one of concentrated, open-minded patience, requiring me to stay alert to paint (viscosity, brush loading, etc) and compositional characteristics in much the same way as fully abstract works demand. These cannot be rushed, nor the movements/marks allowed to become repetitively mechanical. To do so would be to undermine the intention of the work. The works initially appear highly decorative and orderly – feathers mean birds. But on closer inspection, these are not any birds you’d recognise. Their physiology is different (wrong? altered?). The colours and intensity are emotive, the mark-making intense. These irregularities draw you in, encourage observation and contemplation. But ultimately you are released to once again to simply enjoy the decorative qualities of these jewels. That they are designed to be hung at any angle, allows the image to be changed/refreshed at will. This allows the viewer input into the relationship each work has with its surroundings. The round paintings are very effective in groupings, allowing differences between the works to intensify each other.”

Your Local Views If in doubt, don’t go out! By Gary Manch, navigational safety officer, Lyttelton WITH AUTUMN now with us a lot of you will be making the most of the good weather. And so you should! However, as you will all know, here in New Zealand we can experience four seasons in one day. It’s really important that you check the weather forecast before you enjoy your day at sea, on the river or at the lake. Knowledge of what is going to happen the day you head out on the water is crucial to your safety and that of your passengers. I like to use the MetService Marine forecast and also check one of the other local weather services to ensure I’m on the right track in terms of my planning for my day on the water. I have weather apps on my phone which are really simple to use; they keep me up to date to the very minute before I decide to launch my boat. Some good apps include The Weather Channel, MetService Marine weather and MetService. It’s not unusual for the Harbourmaster’s Office to get reports about boats getting

I’m very impressed with Maritime New Zealand’s catchphrase – “nobody’s faster than disaster”. What this means is plan for the worst.

Complacency or a simple lack of care could have disastrous consequences for you and your crew. Wearing lifejackets, having two forms of communication and knowing the rules are all basic things to tick off before you head out on the water. The same safety measures apply to those who kayak, canoe and paddleboard. That’s it from me, enjoy yourselves on water and be safe. As sergeant from Hill Street Blues (for those of you old enough to know who he is) would say – “let’s be careful out there”.

The Government is pulling rubbish out from nowhere that kids will be psychologically traumatised from the memories, but that’s all they have to go on and none of those children will be at the school when it reopens anyway, they will all have passed through to high school. But even though the site is absolutely fine, the school has to settle for something and compromise to even have a school, as to argue against the park or Barnett Park, they have to rule it out. And if the Government rules out the current site too, which they want to do so they can build on it themselves, then the school has no option and can’t open in Redcliffs. Sometimes you have to cut your

losses, even when you know those you are fighting are entirely wrong. Ideal world the school would return to the original site which is entirely fine and a wonderful school site. But a school at the park is better than no school at all. Jamie Fowler – Leave it where it is. If anything, move classrooms more towards road. Make the back end the field. Work in progress? Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson talks about the appearance of the Bay Harbour area CHRISTCHURCH residents have a proud history of caring about and for their visual environment. This obsession with our surroundings encompasses our proud history of architects, artists and designers who have shaped our city, through to the suburban “beautifying associations” who have preened our streets and avenues. Given this heritage, I was not surprised that a number of Bays residents have approached me and raised questions about the final appearance of the numerous mitigation works in their area. It needs to be said from the outset that these residents have always framed their questions with the gratitude that they feel for the important and costly works that have been completed to protect vital infrastructure. Yet, they still question what the final visual impact of these works will be. In Peacocks Gallop, for instance will the “black pool fences” be the final visual solution for what was once an avenue of

beautifully crafted stone and iron memorial lampposts? Once again, I have to point out, that these comments have not been made in a finger-pointing negative way. They are merely the natural result of that great Christchurch tradition of caring about our community and our shared spaces. Since the earthquakes, residents of the Bays community have given freely of their time and intellect to care for each other and to rebuild both their communities and their environment. The Village Green at Sumner, community gardens, the rebuild of the beautiful Sumner Surf Club and the tenacious fight for Redcliffs School and library are but a few prominent examples among many. Maybe there can be an opportunity for that same force to reshape what these mitigated areas will finally look like. In The Life Changing Art of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo refers to the concept that what we see in our constructed environment must spark joy in us. Now that the mitigation work has taken place, maybe it is time to tidy-up our public spaces, and let the people of the Bays community lead the way in designing what will spark joy in their surroundings.

Plan for skate park City Councillor and LinwoodCentralHeathcote community board member Sara Templeton talks about how important having a permanent skate park in Sumner is and how the community can use their own initiative to regenerate Christchurch It’s been a busy weekend in Christchurch with events on all over the city. LYFE, Nostalgia, Holi, Japan Day and Children’s Day have all been on and complement the ongoing smaller activities that happen in our neighbourhoods every week. The Mt Pleasant, Sumner, Lyttelton and Opawa markets are great places for us to shop and connect as communities and the many playgrounds are full of children and their parents catching up. We’re missing something though – ongoing activities for our youth. There has been demand for a skate park in the Bays area for many years; it was identified in a city council network plan in 2004 and in 2009

and in 2015, it nearly happened. Demand has never been higher. The success of the temporary skate ramp in Sumner over the last couple of years has shown that not only is there a need for one, but that they can be run well and with none of the graffiti and antisocial behaviours from the skaters that is usually predicted. So, last week the new Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board decided to get started on a permanent skate park for the area. We will go through a full site selection

process and bid for funding in the Long Term Plan. Keep an eye out as we’re keen to kick this off as soon as possible. Meanwhile, I also attended the first community discussion on future uses of the Port Hills red-zoned land. It was held in Mt Pleasant and community led, as Regenerate Christchurch are currently focused on the larger flat residential red-zone. There are 69 individual red-zones in the Port Hills, as well as the mass movement areas and we’ll be able to consult on all of them at the same time. However, there’s nothing to stop communities starting their own processes – holding workshops and looking at the various zoning maps to see what might be possible. That way we’ll be ready to go when they are.

Father-son duo win XRACE event By Poppy Wortman A REDCLIFFS father and son duo took out the line honours at Sunday’s NZHL XRACE, held under blazing blue skies at New Brighton Beach. At a speedy time of 41m 20s, Greg Jansen and eight-year-old son, Luke, tackled 10 challenges, including creating a cardboard house, building an origami bird and performing dance steps. Jansen had raced the previous two years with Luke’s older sister Hannah, but this year he signed up with his middle son. “I love the balance of the competition and the companionship of being in an event with my children. There is just nothing like this,” Jansen said. “I loved every second of being able to race with my son. I couldn’t have been prouder. “It’s a bit of a grudge match now though; my six-year-old son is booking me in for next year and is aiming for a legacy.” The Christchurch stop over was the sixth event in the national series of XRACE events. MORE SUCCESS: Football practice is well under way at Ferrymead as the club prepares for the upcoming season. The men’s senior and reserve teams have been training for a few weeks now and are warming up for the Mainland Premier League, which starts on March 19. Ferrymead’s women’s and 45-plus men’s teams (pictured) took out gold at the South Island Masters’ Tournament in Timaru last year and the club is looking for more success this year. Club captain Ren Cameron said the players were training well and are looking forward to the season. He said there will be a lot of exciting football this season for the club, particularly with a team being sent to a three-day under-17 youth football tournament in Auckland later this month.

THE LYTTELTON Netball Club is hoping to increase its membership pool this season. Lyttelton committee chairwoman Flo McGregor said training will begin towards the end of March with games starting in April, but it is not too late for people to register. She said the closing date for registrations is Sunday and the club is always welcoming new members. “We enjoy the fact that our club has many returning participants and are really looking forward to welcoming new people into our growing netball whānau.” She said last year the club had seven teams, including one adult team, and it is hoping to attract not just players, but managers, coaches and committee members as well. “Not only are we hoping to

Mishmash of sights in Milan By Mike Yardley MILAN CAN be a tough nut to crack and first impressions aren’t always flattering. Extensively bombed during World War 2, the central city skyline resembles an architectural lasagne, a mishmash of the venerable and the hastily built brutalist. But give this Italian powerhouse of finance and fashion a chance to reveal her finery and you’ll be amply rewarded. The banner attractions are headlined by the Duomo, Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper, and what is arguably the most elegant shopping centre in Europe, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Fancy a new way to commune with this glass domed goliath? Head up to the roofline of the Galleria, which has only been open to the public since May. Costing €12, Highline Galleria serves up giddy perspectives of the building, across to the Duomo, and on a clear day, expansive views of the Alps. The far end archway leading out of the galleria adjoins the pretty Piazza della Scala, adorned with a statue of Leonardo Da Vinci overlooking Teatro La Scala. First built in 1778, this legendary opera house was all but destroyed during World War 2, but was rapidly rebuilt and reopened in 1946. La Scala’s façade is rather austere, but like much of Milan, the real beauty lies within. Its majestic six-tiered and chandeliered interior, bursting with gilded arches and scarlet-silk furnishings are sublime. Trying to score tickets to an opera is not easy, nor cheap, so if you want to grab a glimpse of the auditorium’s lavish interior, just head next door to Scala Museum where for €6 you get to gaze down inside this stupendous theatre. One of Milan’s favourite sons, Guiseppe Verdi, premiered 10 of his 26 operas at La Scala and on nearby Via Manzoni, take note

Horses outside the hotel had their hooves muffled, and the street was draped in carpet to cushion the sound of the carriages, so as

The hotel is actually a time-capsule, to the point that you can book the Verdi Suite, the very room where he died, which has been preserved as a memorial. In a city where it rains more regularly than Auckland, the trending must-have object of Milanese

News Ace pilot’s spitfire engine on display AN AIRCRAFT engine, which lay buried in northern France for more than 70 years, has come halfway around the world to be delivered to the homeland of its pilot. The Rolls Royce Merlin engine, which belonged to an Mk.IXB spitfire flown by renowned Invercargillborn fighter ace Johnny Checketts, has arrived at its new home at the Air Force Museum of Johnny New Zealand in Checketts Wigram. Checketts son, Chris Checketts, was with museum staff to meet it. The engine has a remarkable story to tell, stretching back to the height of World War 2. On September 6, 1943, Checketts and his fellow spitfire pilots of No 485 (NZ) Squadron RAF took off on a mission to escort 72 RAF bombers to their target in France. They were intercepted and attacked by 20 German FW 190 fighters and, in the ensuing dogfight, Checketts’ spitfire was hit. There was an explosion and

the cockpit filled with flames. Checketts was badly burned but managed to bail out, landing safely in a field, while his spitfire ploughed into the ground. He was safely hidden with a French family and his wounds treated. With help from the French Resistance, Checketts evaded capture for nearly two months and safely made it back to England. He passed away in Christch-

urch in 2006 after serving as a volunteer guide at the Air Force Museum for a number of years. In March 2015, French aviation enthusiast group Somme Aviation 39-45 uncovered the remains of Checketts’ spitfire, aided by the accurate memories of local man André Bonvarlet who, as a teenager, had witnessed the spitfire crash and had seen him bail out. Pierre Ben and his team then began the process of cleaning and restoring the engine, which was encrusted with clay and dirt. Mr Ben contacted Chris in Christchurch about the possibility of sending the engine to New Zealand. Thanks to support from Mainfreight, the engine was shipped

here. Chris then donated it to the museum. Through the efforts of Mr Ben and his team, the museum now has an enduring tribute to one of the most famous Kiwi fighter aces of World War 2. Visitors will be able to view the engine when it goes on public display this month. Chris said he felt “quite emotional” at encountering such a tangible link to his late father.

Classic kid’s tale finally coming By Georgia O’Connor-Harding FROM THE moment The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show was brought to life on stage, Australian producer Michael Sieders (right) had his heart set on bringing the show across the ditch. After two years of touring Australia, the timeless children’s story will finally come to the city in July. Star Media has partnered the Isaac Theatre Royal to bring the successful show to Christchurch audiences. “It has been a long time coming. I have been planning this since its inception in 2015. Glad we can finally get it over there,” Sieders said. The show is to be presented by JWR Productions Australia and Michael Sieders Presents. Seventy-five hand-made puppets controlled by just four cast members will take Eric Carle’s classic tale from the page to the Isaac Theatre Royal’s stage. But to stay true to what is only a short 22-page book, audiences will get to see another three of

Carle’s children’s book adapted, bulking the show out to nearly an hour. The show is to begin with The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse, Mister Seahorse, The Very Lonely Firefly before finishing with The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The stage is to be transformed into a giant library with a 3.5m high book prop enabling the cast to create the different setting for each story. A team of about five puppetmakers from Puppet Kitchen Productions in New York city

spent four months full-time creating the puppets before they were shipped off to Sydney. “We have puppets that range in size from the little tiny lightup firefly which is probably about the size of someone’s hand, ranging right up to the butterfly which has a wing span of nearly 4m,” Sieders said. He said the giant butterfly puppet will literally fly off a page and head straight towards the audience. “Even though you only get to see those puppets for sometimes

• Buses will be running from McCormacks Bay to both start locations. The first 14km bus will leave at 7.15am, and the last at 8.15am. The first Sport Canterbury 6km bus will depart at 8.30am, and the last at 9.15am. The Sport Canterbury bus drop off point is 800m from Hansens Park.
