Plan to beat arsonists „„ By Andrew King FIRE SERVICE and education bosses are working together to prevent vacant schools from being the target of arsonists. The campaign is aimed at removing things such as rubbish bins, outside furniture and other combustibles from school sites that opportunist arsonists use to set fires. There are 25 schools citywide,
four in the north-west suburbs that have either been earmarked for disposal, further education purposes or community use as part of the $1.137 billion Christchurch Schools Rebuild Programme. Fire Service’s Bruce Irvine said they are working with the Ministry of Education over a prevention plan. “We have been looking around the schools for things like
rubbish bins not being stored away correctly, outside furniture not pushed against buildings, that sort of thing to try limit the amount of opportunity,� he said. The north-west sites are on Champion St, which is being used by Beckenham School temporarily, Glenmoor School on Philpotts Rd, Kendal Primary on Kendal Ave and Marshland School’s former site
on Marshland Rd. MoE head of education infrastructure service Kim Shannon said all schools are vulnerable over summer because they are generally unoccupied. “It’s an unfortunate fact that all schools are potential targets for arson and vandalism, particularly during the summer months when the buildings aren’t in use,� she said.
Aranui High and Wainoni schools now have extra security after both were vandalised recently. Aranui High was hit just a week after it closed down for good last month. A number of windows were smashed, buildings tagged and construction equipment on-site was vandalised and tagged. •Turn to page 5

GREAT TO see a strategy to try and stop opportunist arsons at schools earmarked for demolition around the city (see page 1). Typically, random fires that happen at schools (usually during school holidays) are started in rubbish bins, or on outdoor furniture, and usually by groups of teenagers roaming the area at night looking to create mischief. The real arsonists take the places out with planned intent. These guys are few and far between and always fairly impossible to stop. So a wise move by the Fire Service and Ministry of Education to get rid of rubbish bins and equipment at unused schools, which hopefully will mean those marauding groups of teenagers will simply move on. And good luck to Mika Ravalawa (see page 1 and 18) – he’ll do well at the Canberra Raiders. – Barry Clarke

In Brief BURGLARY ARREST Police have praised a person who alerted them to suspicious behaviour at a St Albans address on Friday morning which led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man for burglary. Senior Sergeant Chris Scott said several staff, including a dog team, cordoned off Weston Rd and located the offender hiding inside an address on that road. BOARD MEETINGS BEGIN Community boards in the northwest will resume normal meetings every two weeks from February. The first meeting of the PapanuiInnes Community Board will be on February 10 at 9am in the Papanui Library. Your Local Views Maintaining trust and confidence This week’s opinion piece was written by Canterbury district police commander Superintendent John Price about modern day law enforcement I am extremely proud of the police team who serve the people and make a difference to the community every minute of every day as our team keep the peace and ensure the public will be safe and feel safe. In New Zealand, our police have the implicit consent of the community. In order to do this, we must be seen as policing with integrity and with accountability. Essentially, we must have the trust and confidence of the community. Policing by consent follows the principles, ideas and ideals of Sir Robert Peel, which define an ethical police organisation. These ‘Peelian Principles’ are as relevant today as they were in 1829 when they were established. Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public, and the public are
the police. We maintain the highest level of ‘full trust and confidence’ of any policing organisation in the world, at about 80 per cent. By comparison, some policing jurisdictions have trust and confidence levels lower that 10 per cent, demonstrating that those organisations are not widely seen as ethical and trustworthy. If you have travelled overseas, you will have seen examples of policing organisations which have an approach of policing with fear and only force. We place enormous importance on maintaining and fostering the trust and confidence of our communities and we work hard to ensure we maintain our core values and hold each other to account. Having been a member for 30 years I think the community is justified in having trust and confidence in this organisation. In Canterbury, we want to
ensure that people can be safe and feel safe and I’m sure that is a sentiment you will share. Our focus is on reducing harm caused to families, whether that be through violence in the home, death and injury on the roads, drug use or dishonesty offending. We also want to empower communities to work together, support each other and to speak up when something isn’t right. We work very closely with a range of agencies and community groups to ensure people receive the support they need and deserve. Over the past year, we have targeted those bringing illegal drugs
and firearms into our communities and, as a result, have seized 140 illegal firearms. Each one of those is potentially a life saved. We have also prevented significant amounts of illegal drugs in getting to our streets. We are very lucky in that we receive a lot of positive feedback from members of the community for the work we do. To those people who have taken the time to contact us, I would like you to know that your words of support mean a lot to myself and my team who come to work every day to make a difference in the lives of everyone so that we can be the safest country.
Last week we asked readers if they thought more funding should be allocated by the city council to install school zones, which would include signage and a reduced speed limits around schools. A reader responds: Colin McGavin, of Papanui – I live in Paparoa St and am very familiar with the traffic patterns caused by the school. There are two street frontages for Paparoa St School – Paparoa St and Tomes Rd. Paparoa St is a cul-de-sac, dead end, so carries no through traffic. Tomes Rd joins Rutland St with a 90-degree corner and a 25km/h speed limit. At school start, 9am, and finish, 3pm, times, both sides of both streets are filled with the parked cars of parents and others dropping off or picking up children. This means that there is generally only room for a single line of traffic and you have to give way to let through cars coming the other way. So there is already a ‘built in’ speed restriction mechanism. Therefore, spending money on additional signage for this school is a complete and total waste of money. Take it off this list and spend the money on schools that have genuine problems.

Stolen credit cards found in Bryndwr property search
By Andrew King TWO STOLEN credit cards have been recovered as police continue to crackdown on youth crime in the north-west. A search warrant was issued to look for stolen items at a property on Aorangi Rd, Bryndwr, on Tuesday, which was believed to be linked with Nick Adcock two burglaries in Papanui. A youth has been spoken to by police and a man has been charged with using a document for pecuniary advantage. It is alleged the man used a stolen credit card to make purchases totalling about $400. Police say he could possibly face methamphetamine possession and utensil charges as well. Among the recovered items were Australian senior citizen cards police believe were taken in the Papanui burglaries as well as stolen credits cards and electronics. It follows another warrant issued on January 6 in Bryndwr, where a 13-year-old suspect was

identified as a person of interest in the Papanui burglaries. From that warrant, police established another address that potentially contained more stolen property. Police say charges are yet to be laid. The crackdown is part of an operation, code-named Piper, which targets the top 10 youth believed to be responsible for burglaries, thefts, vandalism, graffiti, intimidation and other offending. Acting Sergeant Nick Adcock said seven of the 10 top offenders have been dealt with for offending
with various degrees of seriousness since the operation started in September. He said he couldn’t comment on the specifics but the offences ranged from burglary, aggravated robbery and trespass. Operation Piper is based out of the Papanui police station and is aimed at giving opportunities to break the cycle of crime. It’s part of a wider focus throughout northern and eastern suburbs to reduce youth crime and a national goal to reduce it 25 per cent by June.

schools to repair buildings that have been deliberately set on fire, provided the damage is under $2500. The MoE has a funding programme, backed by private sector insurance, to pay for repairs to school buildings damaged in a fire or natural disaster. Buildings will be covered for loss or damage costing more than $2500 to repair and that meets the criteria.

Proud mum awarded for her Kate Russell has been a leader in the not-for-profit health sector for 24 years. Georgia O’Connor-Harding spoke to her about working at the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation and what it was like to raise three children as a solo parent. Congratulations on becoming and Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. You must be very excited? I was thrilled when I heard. My first reaction was who the heck must have nominated me? But I still don’t know and possibly never will. I am very honoured. I didn’t know I was going to get nominated. There are so many different sectors in my professional life where it could have come from, but they said health and governance and that has narrowed it down. What made you stick to helping the not-for-profit organisations? I fell into the not-for-profit sector by accident. My first job was as a fundraising assistant for Presbyterian Support. I got it because it was a 20-hour week job and it suited the fact I had small children at the time. I was in that job for a couple
of weeks and I had what you would describe as a vocational empathy of thinking, oh my goodness, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I was 30-years-old and aside from being a mother, I hadn’t figured out what I wanted to do careerwise. I had always done things to do with social justice. I had gone on the ‘no tour marches’ and was a junior member of human rights organisation, Amnesty International. Tell me about working at the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation? When I took this role, some of my colleagues at the national programme, Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand, were like isn’t that a step back because you are going into a regional role? But after the earthquakes, I very much had in my heart to do something in Canterbury. Medical research is something you don’t always get

immediate results. In the nearly three years I have been there, I can’t say there has been a new blockbuster drug. Rarely does medical research go ahead in a quantum leaps, it is these little baby steps that happen over a
number of years. Could give me a picture of the research you are doing at the moment? We just finished a study on the use of vitamin C and breast cancer. We are also funding a young
women at Otago University who is looking to use vitamin C for people who have got ear infections. We are also pivotal in supporting the development of the UC Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research.

role in medical research How do you think our medical research compares to the rest of the world? We punch very well above our weight. What gets achieved here in research for the fraction of a cost is really quite astounding. In spite of the frustration we all naturally get with the health system and getting put on waiting lists and restricted medicines, we still have universal public health care here. When you look at the hideous situation people in the United States find themselves in, where they don’t have health insurance, we have a fabulous system here. We only pay $5 per item for medicine which may cost up to $150. Still some people complain about that. You often hear about there not being enough beds at Christchurch Hospital. For sure, Christchurch Hospital is an incredibly busy hospital. But the financial results and just the strategic results the CDHB gets in terms of the development of new services; they are just terrific and stack up very well compared to the rest of the district health boards around the country. I can tell you these places are populated by bloody good people who all have a very

big heart for what they do. How old were you when you first had children? I had my first child when I was 19. It was a surprise. It wasn’t in my plan to get pregnant in my second year of university. By the time Sam, my eldest boy, was one I was back at university doing a full-time course, looking after him and holding down two parttime jobs. I have no idea how I
did it. Would that have been one of the most difficult times in your life? No. I always had plenty of family support around me. I have a very close family. But the most difficult time of my life was when I broke up with my first husband. I was a solo parent on my own for seven years with three children. For me, it got to

the stage where I was very poor. I wouldn’t say I had hit rock bottom, but I was very poor and I had to work very hard and make significant sacrifices for the well-being of my children. I was there for some time and I had to make a conscious decision to climb myself out of that. To not be dependent on welfare. How did you get through? The whole family had to make sacrifices for that to occur. There were a lot of times where I couldn’t go to the kids’ sports days. I couldn’t be the one to drop them off at school or look after them after school. I recognise my children paid the price for me putting a lot of evidence on the development of my career. I had a 12, eight and four-yearold. What do your children say about it now? They are very proud. From time to time, we have these conversations where I say I still carry some guilt about not being there because I had to work. I had to be the main bread-winner in the family. They are very pragmatic about it and say what you taught us is a really good work ethic. We understand why you did what you did.

What was the job that got you to turn your career around? Probably the one that started me on the road to financial recovery and career development was the one at CCS Disability Action where I was the regional fundraisng manager. That was where I felt like my skills were fully utilised and I was given a sufficient amount of authority. Have you found a new partner? We are coming up to our second year now and it is all very new. He lives in his house and I live in my house and we have a very nice time when we are together. But I am independent and decided I am not really cut out for living with another person. I am much too independent. So you are keeping the magic alive? Exactly, and my independence. I make my own money. If I want a diamond ring, I buy it, I don’t worry about someone else. I watched my mother model independence to me because my father died when I was 12. She had a very hard road to hoe and she was and still is an extremely hard-worker. And again, a very independent thinker, bright and an inspiring woman.

Deans’ farm restoration to be decided By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A DECISION will be made on the restoration of two buildings connected to the pioneering Deans’ farming settlement. The city council will decide on Thursday whether to approve a heritage incentive grant of up to $62,326 for the repair work of two former farm buildings in Kahu Rd, near Riccarton Bush. A city council report says if the work goes ahead, it will mean some of the last early brick farm buildings in Canterbury will be restored. The application was made by the Christchurch Boys’ High School board of trustees, which owns the buildings. So far, the owners have $1,486,468 available from insurance and have raised a further $147,061 for repairs to enable the building to be reused. The cost of repairing the buildings is estimated to be $2,120,000, which means the owners have to find $546,395. The Deans brothers, William and John, were some of the earliest European settlers in the city and the site of their first farm was at Riccarton Bush.

Young filmmaker on a roll By Andrew King LOOK OUT Sir Peter Jackson, there is a new director on the scene. Christchurch Girls’ High School student Grace Maguire recently won the New Zealand Film Commission Young Women Filmmaker in the Outlook for Someday short film competition. Her three and a half minute film is called Wired, a docudrama about the overuse of technology by teenagers – it also won the CGHS film competition for the second time last year. “They [teenagers] are using it a lot more, not focusing what’s happening around them . . . we want them to look up,” she said. A docudrama is a dramatised television programme or film which takes the form of a serious documentary based on real events. The inspiration for it, she said, came from observing her peers. “It is just something I have seen all around me,” she said. It is not her first film. In 2015, she won the school competition with The Transfer, which was about a teenager who woke up every day in a different body.

St Margaret’s students ace exams By Andrew King THREE former St Margaret’s College students achieved distinction in their International Baccalaureate examinations, the results of which came back recently. Grace Sullivan, Madeleine Tilley and Gabriela Coates now have a few different options when it comes to choosing a university. The school had a 100 per cent pass rate of students who sat the exams, with 41 per cent meeting the criteria for academic excellence scholarships to universities, including Victoria University of Wellington. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a two-year educational course aimed at students aged 16 to 19. The programme provides an internationally-accepted qualification for entry into higher education and is recognised by many universities worldwide. Grace, Madeleine and Gabriela, who sat the exams at the end of 2016, were all awarded distinction for their

high marks throughout the programme. Grace was an academic prefect last year and is also a talented dancer. She will attend Otago University this year with two scholarships called leaders of tomorrow and vicechancellors. Madeleine was deputy head girl and is involved in dance, debating and drama. She will head to the University of Auckland with a top achiever’s scholarship. On top of her exam
success, Gabriela is a talented sportswoman, having won selection at both national and international tennis events. She is weighing up her options, and plans to study at the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, an Australian university or Otago University. School spokeswoman Beth Rouse said the results were a great success. “The accomplishments of these girls extend well outside the academic arena,” she said.

News Papanui’s Mr Bean makes the cut By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LONG-TIME Riccarton Players member Alistair Bean has done everything in theatre from performing in England to working as a extra on TVNZ’s comedy series of McPhail and Gadsby. Now, after acting in Riccarton Players shows for more than 30 years, Bean, 53, of Papanui, will debut as a director. The theatre group will start the year with a “thrill” bringing Ted Tiller’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula back from the dead. “I did this show in Invercargill in 1997 and it is written that well that I thought if I had the opportunity to direct, this is the show I wanted to do,” he said. Bean first became involved with the Riccarton Players 31 years ago with the Riccarton Players’ 25th Anniversary production in 1985 of play The Miracle Worker. With aspirations to make performing a full-time career in his early 20s, Bean first gave it crack in Britain. He was going to perform in a Christmas pantomime in Southend, London for a year but was soon told the show was only professional for seven weeks.

“I was only 23 at the time and a little bit young in the ways of the world so it all became a bit intimidating so I went home,” he said. But determined to continue with the arts as well as delve into a career in finance, Mr Bean performed with numerous theatre companies in the city including Canterbury Children’s Theatre and The Christchurch Operatic Society – now known as Showbiz Christchurch.
He now has his own business Alistair Bean & Assoc’s Financial Services Ltd based in St Albans. He said his most memorable performance was a matinee show of Les Miserables at the Isaac Theatre Royal in 1994 when a 6.7 earthquake struck Arthur’s Pass. “We had a revolver on stage and thought these were the best special effects we have ever had,” he said. He said the whole theatre was evacuated and the performers
were out on the street in their make up. “The old chandelier in the theatre was swinging 180 deg . . . we had 400 stage lights above us and any of them could have come down but none of them did fortunately,” he said. One of his other memorable shows was working with New Zealand comedians David McPhail and Jon Gadsby on their political satire show, where he was everything from a march-

News Foul smell in Papanui’s past By Murray Williams, Papanui Heritage Group IN 1922, the ratepayers of the most urbanised part of Papanui voted to amalgamate with Christchurch city. Prior to this, the whole of the Papanui area had been administered by the Waimairi County Council and there was a large degree of dissatisfaction with the level of service provided by this authority in comparison to those that were enjoyed by people living in Christchurch. One such example was that since the 1880s, the more central parts of Christchurch had enjoyed the luxury of a sewerage system that removed human waste from individual properties via underground pipes. However, those who lived on the outskirts of the city, for example ‘out in Papanui’, still relied on the collection of ‘night soil’ by the ‘night man’ on a weekly basis. This was an insanitary and malodorous method. The contents of the cans were either buried in sand hills or dumped in waterways. The longed for relief was not

however instantaneous. Many Papanui citizens had failed to appreciate that providing a sewerage system was not the role of the city council. In fact it was the responsibility of the independent Christchurch
Drainage Board and Papanui had to wait its turn for the board’s timetabled installation programme. The Papanui Progress League, a lobby group which had been formed to support the amalgamation with the city, kept up the pressure on the city
council, which was responsible for the supervision of night soil collection. On February 17, 1927, the secretary of the league fired off an angry letter to the Christchurch town clerk in which he protested at night carts starting the collection of human effluent as early as 7pm when it was still daylight. The letter said: “The league realises that it may be difficult to do all the districts after dark, so long as this system, a link with the stone age, exists … but it is nothing short of a scandal that the pure air should be polluted with these abominations at such an early hour.” The league at least received a speedy reply. On February 19, the town clerk conceded that collection should not start before 11pm but noted that the relevant by-law did not limit the hours that night carts could travel on streets. Papanui had to wait until 1928 before contractors started work on the system which finally delivered this undoubted benefit of urban living to what was then Christchurch’s most northern suburb.

St Margaret’s Church rebuild on the cards By Andrew King A BISHOPDALE church gutted by an arsonist could be torn down with the rebuild under way by mid-year. The St Margaret’s Presbyterian Church on Farrington Ave suffered almost $2 million in damage when Cheyenne Destiny Jade Reed, a 35-year-old technician, broke into it and started a fire in May. Reverend Andrew Nicol said while some in the community are still dealing with the loss of the church, most are in good spirits. “The timeline for a rebuild is not clear yet, but we are hopeful we could be building our new church halfway through the year,” he said. He said while most of the new building will be covered by insurance, he wanted to see some fundraising from the congregation to show real ownership. “This would show we are completely behind the rebuild,” he said. Currently the congregation meets at Isleworth School. Reed was jailed for six years for the arson and other charges, including burglary, unlawful possession of a knife, breach of bail, receiving a computer and theft of a car.

Don’t make it easy for arsonists By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer WE’RE IN a new year and the same old incidents keep on occurring. By this I mean kitchen fires and arsons. An unattended cooking fire in Sockburn this week raised an interesting dilemma for landlords. Most know that there is a new building law requirement that landlords provide smoke detectors in their properties. In the case referred to there weren’t any smoke alarms in a rental where the tenant went off to work forgetting about food cooking on the stove. Smoke was seen and Fire Service troops attended. There wasn’t too much of a mess and our crew made sure there was a brand new 10-year smoke detector installed (free of charge by the way) before the occupant went back in. But what would be the result if the tenant had gone to bed after cooking rather than leaving for work? What if then the worst happened? How would the law treat the landlord? It’s a good enough

Rising young Fijian rugby player By Gordon Findlater ONE OF the top try-scorers in last year’s UC Championship has been snapped up by the Canberra Raiders. Former Burnside High School rugby player Mika Ravalawa has arrived in Australia to begin a two-year contract with the NRL side. As part of the contract, he will be working within the club as a cadet, which will see him working from Raiders headquarters and assisting with club promotions and activities. The-19-year-old will also be staking his claim for game time with the under-20 squad in the National Youth Competition. “I’m really thankful of the opportunity the Raiders have given me and I’m looking forward to settling in and getting to know all my new teammates. The training is already at a really high level and I need to make sure I work hard and, hopefully, get a chance to play in the NYC team,” said Ravalawa. Born in Fiji, Ravalawa made the move to Christchurch early last year after receiving a scholarship at Burnside’s international rugby programme. The explosive back had captained the Fijian under-18 sevens team and was recommended to the programme

“His contribution to the first XV was invaluable. He has both work ethic on defence and the ability to turn a game with just one or two plays when he gets
the ball,” said Ealey. Ravalawa was predominantly used at centre but also spent time on the wing for Burnside. He was one of the standout players in the UC Championship, finishing with 14 tries, the second most out of all players. His efforts helped Burnside win the South Island co-ed title. The 20-14 win over South Otago High School qualified them for the national co-ed finals tournament. It was on this stage that Ravalawa was spotted by Raiders recruitment and high performance manager Peter Mulholland. “He was outstanding in his position as an outside back; he has pure athleticism and, after I spoke with him, he also had a strong knowledge on rugby league.” “Importantly as well, he’d been in a good environment at Burnside school where he had successfully made the transition away from his home and this made us aware he can adapt to living in a new environment, which is important for a young player at this age,” said Mulholland. “There’s no doubting his natural ability, it’s just a matter of him working hard and taking the next steps in his career under the coaching of Brett White and the NYC coaching staff.”

Cat Rescue Christchurch has just had its busiest month on record, taking in 137 stray cats and kittens for rehoming in December. That was up from 80 at the same time the year before. It has left the charity with more than $12,800 in vet bills for December alone. The numbers show no signs of slowing, with another 40 arrived already this month. Managing director Beki Milligan said the charity had been working for more than a decade to try to reduce Christchurch’s stray cat problem, so the spike was disheartening. “I like to think we’re getting somewhere, but as soon as we think that, something like December will happen,” she said. “It doesn’t take long for a problem to get out of control, especially when it’s cats. They can start reproducing at 16 weeks, so if you’ve got one litter and in four months they are reproducing themselves, then you can have a colony of 50 in six months.” The majority of the cats had been living wild for a long time, she said, often in Christchurch’s industrial areas.

Work set to finish on university project
By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE HEART of the new engineering precinct at Canterbury University is set to be completed in time for the beginning of the academic year. The university released a series of images online showing what the $144 million redevelopment of the engineering precinct will look like. It first announced the College of Engineering would be redeveloped in 2014. The Core, at the centre of the renewal will include spaces for students and staff to socialise, built-in workstations, a cafe and flexible seating options. Canterbury University’s College of Engineering provice chancellor professor Jan Evans-Freeman (left) said the civil and natural engineering wing and mechanical engineering wing will be ready for teaching in time for the beginning of semester 2 this year. She said the college will be expecting an increase in numbers this year with full-time student role numbers going up by 20 per cent in the last five years.

Last year, 3220 domestic and international students were enrolled in the college. Final figures for this year is not expected to be released until February or March. The completion of the precinct, known as the “Canterbury Engineering the Future” project is the first major redevelopment of the engineering department at the university in 42 years. A Canterbury University spokeswoman said the project comprises of a renewal of all
engineering facilities. Meanwhile, students looking to study chemical and process engineering will now know what the new building will look like. Images were recently released of the wing completed last year. Construction work has been completed by Hawkins Construction and Dominion Constructors. The precinct is based on the northern side of Ilam along the Creyke Rd frontage.

your way back to it As we return to our normal daily routines after the holidays you may begin to find the odd ache or pain creeping in.
T
his is a good indicator from our bodies, that the holiday routine was somewhat different. Perhaps you sit a lot for work and you were on the go or, you are normally more active and the holiday break was more sedentary. Either way the sooner you pay attention to these signals the easier it will be to deal with it. So what can you do to ward off pain and stiffness and boost your energy and alertness? 10 simple stretching exercises at your desk that will release tension from head to toe. They take only a few minutes. Set the alarm on your cell phone or computer to go off every hour to remind you it’s time to get up and stretch. Just stand up and sit down - no hands If you stand up and sit down (over and over) without using your hands it can be a challenge, do it while you’re on the phone; no one will know. Shrug your shoulders - to release the neck and shoulders Inhale deeply and shrug your shoulders, lifting them high up to your ears. Hold. Release and drop. Repeat three times. Loosen the hands with air circles Clench both fists, stretching both hands
out in front of you. Make circles in the air, first in one direction, to the count of ten. Then reverse the circles. Shake out the hands. Point your fingers - good for hands, wrist, and forearms
Stretch your left hand out in front of you, pointing fingers toward the floor. Use your right hand to increase the stretch, pushing your fingers down and toward the body. Be gentle do the same with the other hand. Now stretch your left hand out straight in front, wrist bent, with fingers pointing skyward. Use your right hand to increase the stretch, pulling the fingers back toward your body. Do the same on the other side. Release the upper body with a torso twist Inhale and as you exhale, turn to the right and grab the back of your chair with your right hand, and grab the arm of the chair with your left. With eyes level, use your grasp on the chair to help twist your torso around as far to the back of the room as possible. Hold the twist and let your eyes continue the stretch see how far around the room you can peer. Slowly come back to facing forward. Repeat on the other side. Do leg extensions Grab the seat of your chair to brace yourself
and extend your legs straight out in front of you so they are parallel to the floor.Flex and point your toes five times. Release. Repeat. Stretch your back with a “big hug” Hug your body, placing the right hand on your left shoulder and the left hand on your right shoulder. Breathe in and out, releasing the area between your shoulder blades. Cross your arms - for the shoulders and upper back Extend one arm out straight in front of you. With the other hand, grab the elbow of the outstretched arm and pull it across your chest, stretching your shoulder and upper back muscles. Hold. Release. Stretch out the other arm in front of you - repeat. Stretch your back and shoulders with a “leg hug” Sit on the edge of your chair (if it has wheels, wedge the chair against the desk or
