By Tom Doudney A $12 million programme to clean up Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere won’t be enough and irrigation schemes like Central Plains Water will make the situation worse, a water expert says. Dr Bryan Jenkins of the Waterways Centre for Freshwater Management recently completed a study of six New Zealand lakes, including Te Waihora. Environment Canterbury and

Ngai Tahu, in partnership with the Government, are leading the $12 million Whakaora Te Waihora programme to restore the lake over the coming decades by encouraging the growth of macrophytes – aquatic plants which can improve water quality. Dr Jenkins said that while this and other efforts to reduce nutrient loads in the lake’s catchment were positive, they would be insufficient to achieve sustainable water quality due to intensifica-

tion which had taken place in the catchment. There was already too much nitrogen and phosphorus carried by groundwater-fed streams entering the lake. With Central Plains Water and other intensification in the catchment it was estimated that the nitrogen load entering the lake would reach 5600 tonnes per year. Dr Jenkins said the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee’s ‘good management practice’ approach would cut that to

4800 tonnes per year but for the goal of transforming it into a macrophyte lake to be achieved, nitrogen would need to be cut to more like 800 tonnes per year. “What we are currently experiencing is already unacceptable not only in terms of the lake load but also in terms of the impacts occurring on groundwater with respect to drinking water quality and on groundwater-fed stream flow,” Dr Jenkins said. •Turn to page 3

News $12m lake clean-up ‘not enough’ •From page 1 ECan acting science director Tim Davie said Dr Jenkins’ figures, while not incorrect, were selective and missed the point. “There are many different proposed interventions, not just nitrogen reduction,” Mr Davie said. “If you tried to achieve a macrophyte-dominated lake purely by reducing nitrogen then a nitrogen load of 800 tonnes per year would be required. However, if there is a range of other interventions, such as phosphorus reduction and stabilised lake level, then a macrophyte-dominated lake can be achieved with higher nitrogen concentrations.” Mr Davie said ECan agreed that a reduction in land use intensification was required and improved management practises would achieve this. Action over piggery By Tom Doudney A PIG farm near Burnham, which has fallen foul of its neighbours, has been given three weeks to remove all pigs from the property. The 20ha Thompsons Rd property has been owned and run by Chris and Melanie Bates and their son Henry Bates since 2012. After the Bates converted the property into a pig farm, outraged neighbours complained of smell, odour, noise and traffic issues relating to the pigs, and the district council issued an abatement notice. In 2013, the Bates lost an Environment Court case with the district council over whether they needed resource consent for the farm which had about 230 pigs at that stage. They were subsequently granted resource consent but that expired in June. Chris Bates recently suspended the application process for a new resource consent and asked for it to be put on hold while he gathered some more information to address concerns that district council planners had raised. In Brief MOTORBIKE ACCIDENT A man in his 40s was seriously injured in a motorbike accident on a private property on Weedons Ross Rd on Sunday. An ambulance was called at about 2.20pm and the man was taken to Christchurch Hospital. FIRE STATION LAND The district council has confirmed the sale of a 3400sqm site on Kidman St, Rolleston, to the fire service. The fire service intends to develop a new station on the site, which is adjacent to the new St John Ambulance facility, in the next three to five years. The sale price of $910,000 was agreed through a joint market valuation process. The fire service has agreed to lease a storage shed on the site back to the district council until construction begins. COMMUNITY CENTRE Construction of the new $3.3 million Dunsandel Community Centre is expected to start next month. The district council has appointed Arrow International as the lead contractor for the construction of the project. Funding for the project is from a variety of sources including grants, insurance, reserve funds, development contributions, community fundraising and a loan to be funded by a targeted rate.

By Caitlin Miles FUNDING FOR footpath extensions has had a 500 per cent increase. The original budget for footpaths was $50,000 which then got increased to $100,000. The district council decided to increase the budget to $500,000 in the annual plan for 2016-2017. This will allow for 6km of new footpath to laid later this year and into 2017. Mayor Kelvin Coe said the district council decided to increase the budget because of the comments made about footpaths in submissions received about the annual plan. “As a result of submissions the council plans to increase the budget for footpath extension work from $100,000 to $500,000,” Mayor Coe said. The council received 47 submissions from the public about footpaths, cycleways and walkways. The extensions will be district wide and will provide new sections of footpaths on both sides of the street and getting new footpaths to connection to schools. District council corporate services manager Greg Bell said the increase in cost will be covered from the increased income or expenditure savings made by the district council from 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. Rolleston Residents’ Association chairwoman Nicole Reid said the association had asked for funding to rise from $100,000 to $200,000. “We asked for it to be doubled but they

put $500,000 which was quite a bonus,” Ms Reid said. District council transport asset manager Andrew Mazey said the work on extending the footpaths will be spread around the district. “Councillors were keen to ensure that the benefits of such work should be spread across the district as some smaller townships have requested footpath extensions for some time that needed to be addressed,” Mr Mazey said. District councillor Sam Broughton said this will connect the townships better. “Some well established and older communities only have one footpath along a road or not complete footpaths so this is about filling in those blanks,” Cr Broughton said.

I’ve spent a lifetime teaching science. If you define science to include critical thinking, I count the efforts of New Zealand as a total failure. Why? Because critical thinking is the ability to examine evidence and conflicting claims without allowing prejudices or personal interest to intrude. And critical thinking, sadly, is in seriously short supply today. This is what the pioneering psychologist William James meant when he said that “A great many people think they are thinking, when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.” An example: climate change. Comment threads and

twitter feeds are full of unsupported prejudice rather than fact. “Climate change is not happening”; “scientists are all lying to get more funding for their research”; “climate always changes, it’s not our fault”; “we are due for a new ice age so climate change is good”. People who post this rubbish ignore that fact that science is a merciless process of critically analysing both the raw data and the predictions made from them. I invite any lay-person who thinks they can do better to submit their own analysis to the global science community. Fame and possibly fortune awaits you if you can prove the current consensus wrong. So why do these denier memes refuse to die? Simply because we can’t face the conclusion that we

– all of us – are changing the climate. That unpleasant fact hits at the heart of our whole lifestyle: our love affair with cars, jet skis, quad bikes and flying. So the hands go over the ears and we start coming up with excuses and lies. Let me state this clearly: every major national science academy around the world has examined the evidence and they are all seriously concerned. So what do we do? Individual actions are not enough – we need policy changes at a national and international level. Politicians generally follow public opinion – they will do nothing until we demand action. And that won’t happen until enough of us face the truth. That brings me back to education and critical thinking. H.G Wells famously said “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe”. That’s never been truer or more urgent than today. Use your vote wisely.

News Boost for heritage properties FOURTEEN HERITAGE properties will get a makeover and repairs thanks to a funding grant. The district council granted $40,000 of funding to go towards restoration and maintenance work on the historic buildings. Tod Cottage in Lincoln has received $2500 for the roof to be re-done. The cottage on East Belt was built in 1858 and owned by pioneers William and Mary Tod who arrived in Canterbury in 1841. They lived in the house which also served as Lincoln’s first school as they educated their own children and other local children there. St John’s Church on High St in Leeston was granted $5500 to rebuild a brick fence which was damaged during the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes. The church dates from 1872, the church building also suffered earthquake damage and it too has been restored. Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust received $8500 to relocate a historic cottage from Wabys Rd in Southbridge to the heritage

The stables were built in 1877 and were used by the workers at the Homebush Brick and Tile Works to stable horses. The money will be used to install new beams to support the roof which has weakened over the years and with age.

District council strategy and policy planner Jessica Tuilaepa, said keeping the heritage buildings in good condition is important. “The council is pleased to be able to fund work which will allow heritage buildings of importance to the community to be preserved for future generations to enjoy,” she said. Heritage grants were also made to 10 other property owners and three owners of heritage trees to undertake projects.

Sicon has been operating the plant since it opened in 2006. It has also been reappointed to manage the district council’s water services network. News No decision yet on Arthur’s Pass police By Andrew King POLICE HAVE reassured residents of Arthur’s Pass that no decision has been made about the relocation of their police station or officer. Superintendent John Price met with about 40 people who wanted to question the decision to move the police station. The residents are concerned that with no station, police would spend less time in the area. Currently the officer is based between Arthur’s Pass and Rolleston stations. Police have proposed that a kiosk be added to the Department of Conservation centre to replace the current setup meaning there would be a loss of accommodation for an officer. Superintendent Price (above) said it was good to let them know the decision had not been finalised. “It is good to have that opportunity to hear first-hand the concerns of the residents and for them to hear first-hand our thought process and let them

know that we are listening,” he said. “We are looking to improve what we do, not make it worse.” Arthur’s Pass Community Centre chairman and Arthur’s Pass Alpine Motel owner Pete Neale said the area required more police attention not less. “We have an officer here

I think it would get worse if we lost the ability to have an officer here more often,” he said. Superintendent Price said looking at where police resources were needed was what

Consultation open on the future of Rolleston Reserve CONSULTATION IS open on the district council’s plans to develop Rolleston Reserve into a commercial and park area. The district council agreed to drop the reserve status from Rolleston Reserve to develop over half of it into a commercial and retail area. The other half will become a high amenity park. Dropping the reserve status allows the district council to develop 4.3ha of the reserve into a retail area. The remaining 4.2ha will be developed into a park and will include water features, and playground equipment. This land exchange is part of the Rolleston Town Centre Plan. District council open space and property manager Mark Rykers said the land exchange will allow for the town to grow in the middle. The district council is compensating for the loss of land by providing 30ha of land at Foster Park. A drop-in session is being held tonight from 6pm at the district council headquarters in Rolleston. The public consultation is open until the end of the month.

LEST WE FORGET: Prebbleton area resident Christopher Macann laid a wreath at the family plot in Oxford in memory of his great uncle George Macann from Ohoka, killed in the early stages of the Battle of the Somme on July 16, 1916. George Macann, who was 27 when he died, is buried in Armentieres, France. He is remembered in a World War 1 memorial there and at Oxford Cemetery along with his parents who farmed at Bennett’s Junction. His photograph (inset) is in the Ohoka War Memorial Hall. Christopher Macann said a number of George Macann’s nieces and nephews from several generations have visited his grave at Bonjean Military Cemetery over the years. “It’s a sad place, there are so many graves but its pleasing to see that they are lovingly honoured and maintained,” he said. “We’ve always done our best to keep his memory alive. A niece still proudly wears his medals at Anzac Day services.”

THE SELWYN Aquatic Centre is hosting games and activities to celebrate the Olympic games and is inviting the community to get involved. The Rio Olympics open in August 6 in New Zealand and Selwyn Aquatic Centre is bringing the Olympics to Rolleston with a series of challenges and games. Olympic-themed water games like javelin noodle throw, aquatic sprints and paddle boat relay races will also be involved in the day. As part of the celebrations the facility is also currently hosting a Swim to Rio challenge, the aim of it is to swim the 11,765km distance from Lyttelton to Rio de

Janeiro by the time the Olympic Games start next month, to raise money for a new building for St John in Rolleston. The competition began in February and the Selwyn Aquatic Centre community has completed 10,426km so far. Aquatic facilities manager Kathy Moore said: “This is an opportunity to celebrate the contribution everyone who has been part of our Swim to Rio challenge has made to helping raise funds for a local facility for St John while improving their fitness at the same time.” Swim to Rio Challenge participants who have covered the longest distance will be recognised with an award at a presentation.

Climbers no fear approach Springston resident Shania Gibson, 18, is raising money to represent New Zealand in climbing at the World Youth Championships in China. She talked to Siobhan Watson about her love of climbing and the people helping her to reach the top of her sport How long have you been climbing for sport? This will be my seventh year. But competitively, this is my fourth year. How did you get into climbing as a sport? My friend at primary school used to do it just for a bit of fun and she asked me one time if I wanted to go along and I obviously said yes, because I was really into sport and trying new things. Yeah, so we just went for a little bit of fun once a week and she actually left to America to live with her family, so I was left

on my own. But when I got to high school, I pursued it because there was a climbing club and it just went from there. How much money do you need to raise to get over to the competition? Have you reached your goal yet? So it’s roughly about five-grand and I haven’t reached the goal yet. The responses that I’ve had so far are good, but I’ve had to find other ways of funding

myself, which includes sausage sizzles and working twice a week. I’ve been trying to apply for some sponsorship as well. I’ve talked to some small companies but it’s not an easy thing to do with such a small sport. How did you get chosen for the championship? So last year at the national championship – which was held in Rotorua – they had selectors who were watching a lot of us

younger climbers. They were looking at our general ability, and not just physical, but how we cope in stressful situations. And in December last year, they chose a youth development squad of 20 to 30 people, and then we had a trial at the first national competition of this year and they chose the team from that. They based the results on the first national competition of this year, as well as how you competed last year.

What is it about climbing that you like in particular? I enjoy it because it’s not just a physical challenge, it’s also mental. So when your climbing, your always presented with a puzzle or a problem that you have to work out. A lot of people would describe it as dancing but your on a wall. You have to really use your body and your imagination and come up with ways to solve the problems. Sometimes it will take me numerous tries, days or even weeks to complete a problem, but no matter how many attempts it takes me, I always feel a huge amount of satisfaction once I’ve completed it. I enjoy that part of it because when you feel that kind of achievement, you feel good about yourself. Also, the thrill and the adrenalin is really addictive, being up that high and just knowing that you’re pushing past gravity, and knowing that there is always that slight risk that something could happen, but knowing that you’re also in control. When I’m climbing, I don’t think about anything else, I switch off from the outside world and I find it a good stress relief from other things in my life.

pushes her to the summit It’s a good way to just focus on myself and not think about other things for a while. Do you ever get halfway up a cliff and suddenly get scared of falling? I haven’t done a huge amount of outdoor climbing but even just indoors when I’m climbing on the roof, I can quite often fear falling off which can put a barrier on how well I climb, because it’s quite a mental challenge. So you have to put that behind you and that’s what I’m trying to learn at the moment in training as well. Not just the physical part, but mentally pushing myself past my barriers and past my limits and not being so afraid of falling. Because it is an irrational fear, the chances of anything happening are pretty slim. In terms of health and safety, how does that work? So we wear a harness and we are tied into a rope, so obviously you have to have a belayer [a person who controls the safety rope for a climber] and I’m quite sceptical of who is belaying because I really have to trust them. I train with my coach and I really trust him because he’s a really good belayer. So when

you’re climbing, they are feeding out the rope and you clip it into the quick draws on the wall as you climb, and they are about a metre apart. Once you get to one of those points, you’re safe. Well, you’re safe the whole way up but that’s the next point to be aware of. You need to clip in, because if you go further and above,

you could potentially have a fatal fall. What’s the hardest climb that you have done? The hardest climb I’ve done is a 26, which is the grade. Grade 13 is the easiest and I think grade 35 is the hardest someone has done so far. What other interests do you

have aside from climbing? Well, I enjoy any form of physical activity; sport has always been my thing. I enjoy cooking and learning about the nutritional side of things and relating it with my climbing, because I know nutrition is such a big thing with sport. What will the championship in China involve? There is three disciplines in the competition, so that’s speedclimbing, lead-climbing and bouldering. So I’ll be competing in two of those, which is leadclimbing and bouldering. For lead-climbing, there’s qualifications, semi-finals and then finals. It is based over three days and

I’ll be in the junior under-20 category. What do you have planned for the future? Next year I’m going to have a gap year and further my education after that. Anything else you would like to add? Can you please give a special thanks to my coach Stephan Brucher, and Cirrus Tan who has helped me a lot with my climbing over the years. My school climbing teacher George Elliot and Uprising Boulder Gym for helping me to get to China, the Roxx Climbing Gym and everyone else who’s been by my side for the last four years.

The sub-union lost one of their brightest talents last week, with the passing of Utoikamanu Enosi Tuipulotu. Tuipulotu had been in Christchurch Hospital battling a rare form of cancer. It was then when the doctor found a cancerous growth on his heart. In 2014, Tuipulotu made the New Zealand Barbarians Area Schools, which played the Chiefs under-18 team. He has also played for the Canterbury Country and Ellesmere representative teams, and was a Lincoln colt player this year. Only a few months ago, most would have expected Tuipulotu to have turned out for the Ellesmere colts on Saturday. Sadly, his involvement was resigned to a minute’s silence held before the game in his memory. Tries to Mark Maitland and Harry Kirk weren’t enough for Ellesmere in the annual Southbridge Shield match against North Canterbury. The opposition ran in four tries on their way to a 39-14 victory. The win was a rare one for North Canterbury who had won the shield just once in the past 10 years going into the weekend. There was more luck for the Ellesmere colts who had a close fought 20-19 win. The Ellesmere under-18s took out the MC Giffery Trophy with a 22-19 win. Brad Shaw’s third chance of gold Sports reporter Gordon Findlater talks to Canterbury’s Brad Shaw who hopes to claim a medal in his third Olympic Games with the Black Sticks. By Gordon Findlater BRAD SHAW is hoping its a case of being third time lucky at the Rio Olympics. After what he describes as inconsistent performances from New Zealand squads in Beijing and London, he’s hopeful the Black Sticks have the right plan going into this year’s games. “At previous games, we’ve played really well, but have struggled to get results against weaker opposition we should be beating. In Beijing we could only manage a draw with China, and in London we lost our opening game to Korea. We should be beating them nine out of 10 times,” said Shaw. Now an experienced Olympian, he is also aware of the foreign environment players must be prepared for. He described his first experience in Beijing as eye opening, even to the point of seeking a sports psychologist a week into the event. “It’s not something you get used to, you just have to be prepared. The media hype and Olympic village are huge.” Shaw claimed his spot in New Zealand hockey folk-law in 2008, when New Zealand

Shaw grabbed the match-winning goal for the Black Sticks, booking their spot in the Beijing Olympics. “I haven’t scored too many goals in my career, but seem to have a knack for scoring memorable ones.” The defender comes from a proud hockey family. Older brother Hayden Shaw represented the Black Sticks at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and was known as the drag-flick shot expect during his career. Brad Shaw began playing hockey at age four, playing in the local park. He played his first competitive hockey for club-side Selwyn, which his father also played for. Shaw still plays for the club now known as Southern following the amalgamation of the Selwyn and Sydenham. While at Shirley Boys’ High, he helped the school during a successful period for its hockey team. He playing alongside the likes of former New Zealand international cricketer Michael Papps, who he described as a handy mid-fielder. Canterbury’s provincial men’s

team didn’t acquire the services of Shaw until 2004. Prior to that, he travelled north to play for Midlands, due to what he described as a different view in playing styles to the Canterbury set-up at the time. Former Black Sticks assistant coach Andrew Hastie was Shaw’s first Canterbury men’s coach and was impressed with the player he had seen come through various age group teams. “He was a really strong player. Uncompromising. He’s one of those guy’s that always plays with his heart. He wears it on his sleeve and he just goes for it,” said Hastie. Shaw has since become Canterbury captain, a role Hastie believes the 33-year-old thrives in. “He’s our go-to player, always gives 100 percent. He plays the game in the right spirit and gives everything on the field.” The 2004 Champions Trophy was Shaw’s first international tournament, making his debut against Pakistan. Hardly given the ideal start to his international career, he first took to the field for 30 seconds while a teammate addressed a broken shoe lace.

News Inmates help feed the homeless INMATES FROM Christchurch Men’s Prison have grown more than 2300kg of vegetables and herbs, as well as 3400 seedlings, for a very worthy cause. Over the past 10 months, men from Tirohanga Paeroa Unit have built vegetable gardens, and grown and contributed vegetables and seedlings to those in need. The programme has been undertaken with assistance from charity group, Help for the Homeless. Prison residential manager Graeme Hunter said the men wanted to keep busy and do something that would make a difference for people in need in the community. “The new gardens seemed the perfect way to do something useful with the land around the unit, engage the men in a helpful

activity while they learnt useful lifestyle and, potentially, employable skills,” he said. Those who work in the garden gain credits towards a National Certificate in Horticulture qualification. The initiative has already

proved a success for one prisoner. In his mid-40s, he has a background in crop farming and market gardens. He has been involved in the project from the start and has taken on a leadership role in the gardens.

“I mentor others through the practical aspects of the course – weeding, turning soil over, planting seedlings into seed trays. Some of the men have a limited knowledge of gardening, but there is a correct way to do these things, to grow the best

Help for the Homeless was founded in 2014 by Amy Burke, of New Brighton, who saw homeless people hungry, cold, or going through rubbish bins in Christchurch. “Produce from the prison gardens is delivered to [Help for the Homeless] cooks who create dishes for our locals,” Ms Burke. “We also provide support to the recently housed, including youth and any family going through hardship. This filters to schools and community organisations, depending on surplus.” The 3400 seedlings, grown as part of the NZQA horticulture course, were given to the charity for their ‘recently housed’ homeless. This will enable them to learn to live off the land, too.

Youth offenders targeted in health partnership CORRECTIONS AND kaupapa Maori health provider Purapura Whetu have partnered to deliver better health outcomes and “crime-free futures” for youth offenders. Purapura Whetu will provide a wraparound service for Maori youth offenders and their whanau, aiming to connect them

to their culture and traditions. Maori offenders make up 43.7 per cent of people on community sentences in the country. This is the first time Canterbury Corrections has partnered with a health provider specifically to provide targeted services for at-risk Maori youth offenders. Corrections Canterbury dis-

trict manager Lisa Joseph said: “We are working together to intervene and steer this group of youth toward better health outcomes and crime-free futures.” Purapura Whetu chief executive Karaitiana Tickell said its goal was to empower tangata whaiora (people seeking wellness).

Lincoln plans move forward

A busy year

on our roads

The creation of a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly town centre in Lincoln has taken a step forward with the Council acquiring land for off-street car parking. The Council has purchased a site at 16 William Street, near the intersection with Gerald Street, which will eventually be developed to provide free car parking for around 40 vehicles. The development is one of a number of changes proposed under the Lincoln Town Centre Plan to create a safer, more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly town centre. The plan was recently adopted after extensive consultation with the Lincoln community. The vision for the new town centre includes wider footpaths, landscaping, new tree planting, public spaces and additional seating on Gerald Street, as well as the undergrounding of power lines, to create an attractive environment where people will be able to shop, walk, gather and relax. Lower speed limits and new pedestrian islands on Gerald Street opposite New World and the library are also planned. Intersection upgrades and traffic lights will be considered on Gerald Street when vehicle numbers reach certain levels.

Vehicles travel over 300 million kilometres a year on our local roads – an 80% increase since 2001. To maintain Selwyn’s roads in good condition over the past year contractors have been busy: · Resealing 84km of roads · Completing work to remove high roadside edges on 140kms of rural roads to allow water to drain off the surface of the road. Water pooling on the road surface combined with heavy traffic contributes to potholes forming and edge damage. Contractors also cleaned 2,284km of kerb and channel along roadsides to improve road drainage · Repairing 5,668 potholes, completing road edge repairs along 47km of roads and dig out repairs on 38,456m2 of road surface · Grading 9,947km of unsealed roads and placing gravel on unsealed roads · Creating a 2.6km cycleway from Coalgate to Glentunnel and 530 metres of new footpath · 35km of new roads and 30km of new footpaths were vested with the Council by developers from new subdivisions. The ownership of these has now transferred to the Council and we will take over future maintenance. Work to create a new roundabout at the intersection of Springston Rolleston Road and Broadlands Drive and extend Broadlands Drive to this point was also completed. Extra funding approved in last year’s Annual Plan allowed the Council to complete road rehabilitation work on 5.3km of road on sections of Leeston and Lake Road, Deans Road, Rockwood Road, Goulds Road, Springs Road and Marshs Road. Road rehabilitation is required when the road has suffered significant damage and the road base needs to be reconstructed, the surface levelled and resealed. Over the next year, we will continue our road maintenance and repair programme but will also develop around 6km of new footpaths in a number of areas linking existing footpaths together.

Avoid smoke nuisance from fires The Council would like to remind anyone lighting a fire outdoor in a rural area that you need to ensure smoke does not create a danger to motorists by drifting across roads. There are also a number of other fire safety conditions which must be met – for advice see www.selwyn.govt.nz/fire. Outdoor fires are not allowed in residential areas in Canterbury under Environment Canterbury rules, except for barbeques, and are only allowed in hill and high country areas if a fire permit has been granted by the Council. Any vegetation being burnt should be dry to reduce the smoke created by the fire.

During consultation on the plan, the community identified the development of new separated cycleways along Gerald Street as their top priority. To create safe cycleways, some car parks will be relocated from Gerald Street to new areas in the town centre, including the William Street site. Existing angle parks outside shops in the town centre will remain. The Council also plans to reconfigure mostly unmarked on-street parking spaces in the town centre to provide additional parking, including spaces on Lyttelton Street, Maurice Street and West Belt (north and south), which connect to Gerald Street. The Council has also recently developed a new 60-space car park at Lincoln Library. Work on cycleways, footpaths, landscaping, street changes and car parking in the Gerald Street area will occur over the next four years.

Watch out for ice Selwyn has been experiencing frosty conditions recently. Our roading contractor has a list of sites where frost is commonly a problem and these are gritted to improve traction when frosty. If you need to report a frost affected area that needs gritting you can do so by phoning 347 2800 or 318 8338. In frosty conditions please reduce your speed. Ice can also be a problem during the day on patches of road shaded by trees or fences, so look out for this and slow down before entering these areas. Fashion Model search finalists announced By Georgia O’Connor-Harding PORTFOLIO MODEL Agency has announced its nine finalists for the Portfolio Model Search 2016. The competition through Facebook and Instagram was an opportunity for aspiring models, aged between 14-21, to be scouted by the agency. The finalists are Elysha De Rybel, Eva Calje-Van Der Klei, Leanna Elliott, Charlotte Sullivan, Michaelee-Jayne McDonald, Sophie Richards, Shannon Middlemiss, Holly Mccann and Paris Thorman. Each contestant was required to send in a photo of themselves which were judged by agency director Mel Radford Brown and the agency’s model booker Rebecca Dore. The winner of the competition will be announced next Tuesday after the agency has met each contestant in person. Portfolio is an established agency in the city that provides a professional representation of models and actors for both the local and international stage. The winner of the competition will receive a portfolio teenage workshop valued at $299 and a Clemency Alice Facialist “modern facial” valued at $105. The winner will also receive

Up for any challenge Bishop Brothers head chef – Kathryn Ahu. By Gabrielle Stuart KATHRYN AHU was head chef running her own kitchen before she had even finished studying. She was 19 and working at a hotel in Hamilton, when the head chef and sous chef both stood down at once. “The owner asked me if I wanted to step up as head chef. I said, well, let me just go home and talk to my parents.” After two years running the kitchen she took a step back to accept a sous chef job at the Hamilton Belgian Beer Cafe. But within a year and a half she was head chef there, this time running two restaurants. Moving to the top so fast meant she had to learn quickly, but she said it also kept her humble. “I scrub my own rangehood and sweep and mop the floor, so I would never ask my staff to do something I wouldn’t do myself. I think we’re all a team.” About 12 years ago, she moved to Christchurch, “following a man”. Although the relationship didn’t work out, she said she fell in love with Canterbury. Taking a job at the Christchurch Gondola Pinnacle Restaurant helped, as she said the views were absolutely beautiful – although nature could also be a problem there. “Sometimes you’d get a call saying you have to get down in 10 minutes or you’ll be stuck, because the wind’s picking up. Once we did get stranded and had to walk down. But the views were gorgeous.”

The challenges in her next role at Cafe Izone in Rolleston were quite different – attracting people to an industrial area, creating a family-friendly menu and mastering stonegrill. But it won Best New Restaurant in the first year open, and she said it grew in popularity from there. After the earthquakes, she said She started in March at the newly opened Bishop Brothers Public House, at

the former Farrington’s Tavern site. She said the owners wanted to “step it up a little, restaurant style”, while keeping the suburban, homely flavour and reasonable prices. It was a challenge she was up for. She said it was her love for food that drove her, and her enjoyment of experimenting with different flavours and ingredients, both at work and at home.

at work or home “A lot of people say no, I don’t cook at home, but I say if you have a passion for cooking why wouldn’t you?” With a partner who worked as a personal trainer and was ex-army, she said a lot of the meals she cooked after work were big and hearty, with steaks often on the menu.

She enjoyed being part of rebuilding the hospitality scene in Christchurch, but said it was still sad to see how much had been lost. “You can always open another Mexican restaurant or Italian restaurant, but knowing people who have lost everything is the sad thing.” She said the way people

dined out in Christchurch had changed. “I suppose it’s a comfort, when you can go out and have a really lovely time and enjoy your meal. I think we’re enjoying life a bit more, because it was a huge shock to the system that in a matter of minutes something can be taken from you so fast.”

MARION'S OUTLAWS Cut the potatoes into thick slices. Put them on a paper-lined baking tray with 1 Tbsp oil, rosemary, thyme, garlic and seasoning. Cook in the oven until tender. Peel the shallots and saute whole in 1 tbsp olive oil in a heavy-based frying pan. Add the red wine and beef jus, and put in the hot oven for 30-40 minutes until the jus has reduced and the shallots are glossy. Quarter the mushrooms and saute in 1 tbsp olive oil. Season with salt and

pepper. Leave to cool in a sieve, so that some of the juices can drain. Preheat the grill to the hottest setting. Beat the cream until soft peaks form. Add the egg yolks, mustard and ½ tsp salt. Fold the mushrooms through the cream mix and spoon onto the top of the steak. Put this under the hot grill for about 3-4 minutes. Slice the piece of rump and serve with the potatoes, shallots and fresh watercress.

STRAWBERRIES Have you ever wanted to grow your own Jurassic pine tree? Wollemi pines are on show in Nichol’s garden centres (Cromwell, Dunedin and Invercargill) and Terra Viva (Christchurch), all raised carefully by Gardening Solutionz in Christchurch, the sole supplier in New Zealand. The tree was thought to be extinct until a pocket of plants were discovered by a conservationist David Noble in 1994. He was abseiling in a remote ravine in a piece of bush in New South

Wales, when he spotted a tree he couldn’t identify. And what unfolded was the discovery of a tree thought lost, for hundreds of years. This rare plant is happy in most spots in the garden and is adaptable to life in a large tub or pot; it would make the perfect Christmas tree and the ultimate gift for the gardener who has everything. These special plants don’t come along every day, so treat yourself or your garden with a piece of botanical history.

Did you know the coldest months of the year are when strawberry plants are initiating fruiting buds for the upcoming season? The cold temperatures trigger the development of the fruit buds. This is one of the main reasons strawberries are planted over winter, to maximise the fruiting capacity. For existing strawberry beds, remove any runners and pluck off all dead-looking leaves, replenish the soil with strawberry food and tuck new layers of straw around each plant to keep the soil weed-free and the fruit clean.

Hellebores are strutting their stuff for the next few months. These winter wonders are happy nestled under trees, in pots and tubs; anywhere really, as long as they have a little protection from intense sun in summer. A new one to look out for is ‘Camelot’, with its large, pearly white, flat blooms with just a hint of green. Great for a spot in need of extra winter interest and summer foliage. Wintersweet is just bursting with punchy perfume now, too. Even the smallest of sprigs picked and put in a small vase indoors with permeate the room.

Cloaking themselves in blooms for the next few months, camellias are looking good. After flowering is the best time to prune them, trimming them to shape. New stems will appear within a few months. A side-dressing of acid plant food will help promote more flowers, too. Apply this in spring when the soil begins to warm up. Camellias are happy in pots and tubs, too. Ideally they prefer a home away from intense midday sun. Once planted they will last about three to five years before they need re-potting into fresh soil.

Baskets are not just for summer, they are great value all year round. Always freshen up the potting mix before planting anything new. This time of the year the small flowering violas make a brilliant show. Team them up with fairy primulas or herbs, like parsley, for something different. And place the basket somewhere it can be viewed from both inside and outside. If you have any bulbs left over, tuck them up into the roots of the bedding plants and, in a few months, they will add the final hurrah of flowers in spring.

VEGETABLES

Broad beans are cool customers that thrive in the winter months. It’s a little too late to sow seed now, but fat seedlings are in the shops. Plant in a spot away from strong winds, or if you have large planters or containers, jam heaps in so you can be feasting on them for Christmas. Harvest yams now the frosts have sweetened up the flavour. Once dug up, wash off any soil and allow them to dry before storing somewhere dry and dark. Keep a few of the fattest ones for planting out in spring for next year’s crop. The same goes for Jerusalem artichokes. Now the stalks have died down, lift them and store in the same way as yams.

July is still a good month to get out and complete some of those gardening tasks. Even with the chilly starts, the days often turn out to be sunny and a good temperature for getting stuck in to your garden. Here are a few tasks that can done now: Planting • Strawberries can still be planted now. Use our Patio Plus for planting in pots, tubs, barrels and other containers. • There is still time to get garlic and shallots in. Fresh garlic is delicious added into your cooking, and it is pretty simple to grow. • Plant veggie seedlings like broccoli, cauliflower, radish, silverbeet, peas and spinach.

Fertilising • Those spring bulbs will

be starting to pop through now. Give them a boost of nutrition in the form of Intelligro Topdressing Fertiliser. This will help them to continue develop, ready to burst into bloom in Spring. • If you are planning to plant seed potatoes, give the area you are planting in a boost by adding in Intelligro Potato Fertiliser before planting.

General Tasks • Prune your roses! Best done on a dry, sunny day. If you have any questions about

pruning your roses, send them to us at info@igro.co.nz and we will get back to you as soon as we can. • Protect your plants from frosts. Add Organic Compost to gardens and layer with one of our barks. This will help keep the plant’s roots protected from the cold. Cover veggie beds with a frost cloth, and where possible, move pots indoors if a big frost is forecast. • Tidy up leaves from paths and in gutters. Artistic Decorating craft enthusiasts and others wanting to make a piece of art or accessory, may be interested in the new trend of decoupage. TradiTionally, decoupage was cutting out and gluing layers of paper onto an object like a box before varnishing over to seal the image. card making uses decoupage, however it is not just about cards. it can be used to enhance bags, boxes, runners, wall hangings or even school bags and bicycles. For example, a tote or nappy bag might be made out of calico then decorated using decoupage. decoupage can be applied to hard and soft surfaces where fabrics might be used along with painting of images, to achieve unique and original art to be displayed, used or worn. it can be applied to walls, tables, chairs, stones, fabrics, canvases, tote bags, throws or rugs. Those interested in discovering more about decoupage will want to pop into classic curtains where Maxine has just received a shipment of decoupage products. “i love fabrics and enjoy creating accessories such as bags and cushions so i’m really excited about what can be done with these decoupage products,” says Maxine. “Many locals come into purchase fabrics for craftwork so when i learnt that decoupage was becoming really popular overseas i wanted to bring this craft into my store. no other outlets locally, offer decoupage products.” “you can change the look in part of a home with a decoration such as stencilling a zebra or other animals on the wall in a

children’s bedroom. applying decoupage to just one chair or chest of drawers will change the whole room. it’s also applied around sinks and bathroom vanities and as it’s lacquered is protected from the water.” also popular is pyramid decoupage where artwork is raised using modelling cream, to create a 3d effect. Maxine now has a range of decoupage products in stock. These include pattern templates, stencils, inks, ink stamps for tie dying and fabrics, felt decorations that can be incorporated into a cushion or bag, and modelling cream. OUTDOORS THree local businesses have deservedly been nominated for the 2016 Sensational Selwyn awards, a bi-annual event held by the Selwyn district council to recognise the work and achievements of local businesses. The outdoor Space is one of three businesses nominated for the community project award. aaron and Vicky Bartlett from The outdoor Space, joined up with alan and aileen peacock from iSl (independent Signs ltd) in rolleston, and lincoln envirotown Trust for a fruit trees in schools initiative. alan and aileen peacock came up with the idea of planting fruit trees on school grounds in the Selwyn district, after watching a television programme that concluded that there was insufficient fruit in children’s lunch boxes. With the support of other local business people who donated funds to

pay for the trees, the three businesses instigated a planting programme at the district’s primary schools where each school would receive ten fruit trees per year. So far, approximately twenty primary schools in the district have had fruit trees planted on their grounds. “The first crop was planted in 2015,” explains Vicky who says that some schools made it a grand affair while others incorporated the planting into their teaching with the children drawing up a planting plan and helping with the planting.” Vicky is enthusiastic about the benefits for the children who learn new skills and that food does not just come from the supermarket, with the best benefit being that once fruiting, the students get to see and eat the fruit. The outdoor Space team have also been busy landscaping and aaron emphasises the importance of booking

early so work will be completed for the growing season. as specialists in both hard and soft landscaping they can assist with: walls, stonework, decks, paving, fencing, pergolas, water features, outdoor fires, irrigation systems, lawns, and planting out. if you have some quirky recyclables, old bricks, pallets, wooden windows, or a bike that granny used to ride then why not consider incorporating these into your landscaping. old taps can be turned into a water feature and old tools welded together for a gate or set into concrete. it might also save a little on the budget. “you dream it up, and we’ll do our best,” say aaron who loves being

Ford Focus ST a worthy compromise By Ross Kiddie I’VE LONG desired a 70s two-door Ford Escort, it’s a car I thought would be a good retirement project, but I’m a victim of skyrocketing classic car prices and decreased availability. The latter could be true of other fast Ford fans, New Zealand’s quota of the recently-released Focus RS has been exhausted, the 257kW, four-wheel-drive model is hot property and, by all accounts, deservedly so, as it is a true performance machine. However, Ford has another hot Focus, it is the ST and would suffice for those who want good performance at a price that is considerably more favourable than that of the RS. At $52,840 the Focus ST is affordable, and although its performance isn’t as great as the RS, it equips itself well with 184kW, and 360Nm providing the power for a 6.6sec standstill to 100km/h time. Power is directed through a sixspeed manual transmission and is a front-wheel-drive model only, and while it certainly fits into the hot hatchback category, it has four-doors offering the practicality the Focus has as a series. The ST gets a turbocharged, twin-camshaft engine which gets about its job with strong engine

sound and character. I’m not saying it is noisy, it’s not, the sound is well isolated but it is there to be heard, the engine is angry under load and it is a sound that encourages throttle use, it is pleasant to listen to. The Focus ST is quick through a corner, grippy tyres (Good Year Eagle F1, 225/40 x 18in) turn in precisely with little steering effort. If more lock is required you can rely on the tyres to bite and maintain direction. Sitting low, the Focus doesn’t move around on the suspension, therefore gravitational changes don’t load the tyres, nor does it affect the way the suspension operates in a corner; if uneven surfaces are encountered there is composure and certainty within the steering process. I took the test car on a Summit Rd loop, they are perfect roads for a performance car. English Fords have generally been regarded as having supple chassis balance and the ST doesn’t disappoint. It also rockets between corners with a powerful surge and swift retardation thanks to a performance brake package, through the corners it has balance and accuracy akin to a true sports hatchback. There is a bit of torque steer under load, it’s not dramatic but it is there to remind there is a lot of power heading out the front

FORD FOCUS ST: High power engine. end. It doesn’t bother me, I like to be reminded there is something special under the bonnet and the high power flows are there to entice the driver, everything about the Focus ST is structured for performance. The hatchback also embodies the spirit of Ford’s Focus, the ST is still the handy five-seater which pleases in the everyday role as well, but any prospective buyer should be prepared to be noticed. The ST stands out with its bold wheels, body kit and spoiler, while on the inside Recaro seats not only support the driver around the mid-riff, but they are visual. The test car was painted bright yellow,

well, Ford call it tangerine, and the inside detailing incorporated splashes of yellow as well. The Focus ST is a fun package and it comes extensively equipped with all of the items you’d expect today for comfort and convenience, and safety. Ford claim a 6.7l/100km (42mpg) combined cycle fuel usage average for the ST. Obviously, I didn’t push as hard as I could have done because the trip computer was showing around 8l/100km (35mpg), when I took the car back to the dealership. It will also return a 5.6l/100kmn (50mpg) instantaneous reading at 100km/h (engine speed 2200rpm),

which means you can have some fun without scoffing vast amounts of fuel. I’ve long appreciated Ford’s sporty cars which aren’t out of reach for buyers who want a little bit of performance with their purchase. I also relate well to the Volvo-powered five-cylinder Focus Turbo which, for a long period, was one of my favourite fast Fords. Sadly, Ford don’t use that engine any more, however, that aside, the Ecoboost series that makes up a large part of the Ford power plants today is widely recognised for its efficiency and performance. I guess I’ll always mourn parting with my old Escort Sport and envy those who I know have one parked in their garage today. My retirement projects will probably lend themselves to something far more mundane – like painting the house, for instance.

The exercise will involve personnel of the 2/1 RNZIR, from Burnham Military Camp. The exercise will involve up to 50 personnel. Training will involve soldiers conducting live firing activities at the West Melton Rifle Range over the period 25 July – 5 August. All firing will cease no later than 6pm each day, with the exception being 26 July when firing will cease by 10pm. Live ball ammunition natures will be fired on a daily basis with High Explosives being used on 1 and 2 August. The exercise will also involve the movement of troops and vehicles by day and night between Burnham Military Camp and West Melton Rifle Range.

One of the earlier entrants to the recent growth of Lincoln was the Liffey Springs subdivision. First launched in 2012, Liffey Springs is sited on fertile rich land on the Tai Tapu side of Lincoln; named after the natural springs that are the headwaters of the L2 River. “There are two natural streams in Liffey Springs, one on the east of the development and the other bounding the west side. One is called the Liffey, the other the LII as it was originally named,” advises developer, Mike Hobbs. While these natural waterways have narrowed over time they provide an attractive feature in the subdivision and are also a habitat for eels, trout and koura (fresh water crayfish). A total of 222 sections were created at Liffey Springs and some have a view of the port hills and surrounding countryside. Six hectares of reserves, walkways and wide streets add to the attractiveness of the subdivision making it a desirable place to live and explaining its popularity. According to Mike Hobbs, most purchasers have been people who already live in Lincoln or wanted to live there, rather than investors. Sections have ranged from 550 to 1500 square metres in size and the larger areas of land sold very quickly. The smaller sections which are 550 to 850 square metres in size, have sold steadily over the four years and there are now only thirty remaining to be sold to complete the project. This reflects the continual process that has seen Lincoln expand over the last twenty years. People are attracted to the town due to its village feel, relaxed lifestyle and opportunities for work and study at Lincoln University, or one of the research institutions, where there are more than 1,000 paid positions. “A strong thread of international visitors, come to Lincoln for work and study. Many

like the township and decide to settle there and this strong diverse community gives the town a multi-cultural atmosphere,” suggests Mike. Add to the mix, the larger lifestyle blocks in the surrounding landscape with market values of about a million dollars, and the area is an appealing place to live and invest in. Lincoln also offers easy access to Christchurch via Shands, Springs, Birches and Ellesmere roads with no bottlenecks like there are to the north of the city, at the Waimakariri River bridge and other feeder roads get clogged up. “In the English context, a university town is considered highly desirable as it has its own community and cultural framework. Lincoln also has excellent facilities with its new supermarket currently being expanded, service station, retail shopping centre, restaurants, a new library and community centre, and five decile 10 primary schools in the area” adds Mike. “All this makes Lincoln a great place to live.”
