Community centre in Shirley stalled By Siobhan Watson and Andrew King THE REBUILD of the Shirley Community Centre has stalled after a private funding plan was rejected. The Crossway Community Church proposed to the Shirley-Papanui Community Board that a collaboration between the church and the city council be used to fund and maintain the new centre. The church would have invested $2.5m to the new centre and the city council $1.5m. The board rejected the proposal with a 4-3 vote at a recent meeting.

WHAT A CIRCUS!

Church secretary Pat White said although they were disappointed with the outcome, they have other options in place for the church’s location. “It would have been nice to get an answer sooner than this . . . but that is the way it is, now we just have to move on,” she said. Board chairman Mike Davidson said he was “uncomfortable” with the level of investment needed by the city council to make it work with the church. •Turn to page 5

CIRCUS FUN: Lulu Cronje, 10, of Redwood, pulls herself up on the aerial hoop. She was one of about 15 children who were put through their paces at the Kid Circus last Tuesday. It has been a huge hit with children these school holidays with all five days last week sold out. The circus is run by Mim and Danny Syme who created Circotica, a circus theatre company, in 2013.
