Fashion fades, only style remains the same – Coco Chanel What is the definition of style? I believe it is acquiring and selecting the finest life has to offer – be it in the way you dress, what you buy, what you read, how you eat or how you act. In this issue, as always, we bring you the best of Christchurch’s style. On page 20 we profile Ben Foster, a figurative and abstract sculptor. His works are instantly recognisable, all created in his studio on the Kaikoura coast and now sought-after on an international level. On page 12, I had the pleasure to interview Phil Stanton, co-founder of The Blue Man group. HIs passion and vision has created a world phenomenon that entertains and astonishes audiences worldwide. We have a sneak peek at a new home that is one of the finalists for this year’s Master Builders House of The Year and get some inside information from judge Faye Pearson-Green. It’s time to dream a little with our luxurious bedroom edit in our interiors section, where you’ll find the secrets to enjoying a peaceful night’s sleep, with tips on how to feng shui your bedroom. With the ball season fast approaching, we have some stunning gowns in our fashion section. Scorching red, sparkling sequins and luxurious furs are set to make a statement this season. Enjoy this issue of Style. Victoria Tait eDITOR

The 21-piece range is full of exquisite fabrics and bright colours. We love this Gucci-inspired dress.
On your marks, get set, and go! The Christchurch Airport Marathon is on the 5th of June. Inspired by the 1974 Commonwealth Games marathon, it is known as one of the fastest courses in the world. This year, the route will take runners from the start line in Cathedral Square, around Hagley Park, before heading east along the Avon River, and finally returning back to the city-centre finish line. If you need an incentive to get running, all adult entrants go in the draw to win a tip to Paris.
The STolen Kiwi film producer Emily Corcoran has started production on a new film, The Stolen. Set in New Zealand’s South Island during the gold rush years of the 1860s, the narrative follows the story of a woman who must find her kidnapped son. Filming has started at Ferrymead Heritage Park, with an international cast that includes Alice Eve, recently in Star Trek: Into Darkness and Jack Davenport, known for his roles in Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Rocky Horror Picture Show creator, Richard O’Brien will also play a part in the film. We can expect to see The Stolen in cinemas in November this year.

KurioSa Located just before Prebbleton, at 430 Springs Road, is a destination for antique lovers. After seven years of operating The White Cat Emporium in Cheviot, Graham Weaver and partner Lal decided to retire, but, wanting to keep the business in the family, they passed the reins to son Ezra, who had always had a passion for antiquity. Ezra Weaver and his partner Sacha Coogan have recreated The White Cat Emporium as Kuriosa in Prebbleton. It represents the couple’s vision of having a taste of Europe on offer just outside the city. The beautiful surroundings certainly make you feel like you’re standing in a rural paddock in Lyon, France. The store stocks high-end, one-of-a-kind, handsourced antiques from Italy, France and various markets across Europe.

Five Minutes With Phil Stanton
Phil Stanton is co-founder of the Blue Man Group and a Grammy-nominated musician, composer, writer and performer. Speaking with Victoria Tait he talks about how the Blue Man concept has evolved over the years and what we can expect to see at their firstever Christchurch performance. The Blue Man Group will be performing at Isaac Theatre Royal form the 21st June-3rd July.
You started the Blue Man Group back in 1988. How would you say the show has developed and changed since then? Well, it has always been an experiment, or an exploration of the things that made us feel truly human, the things that excited us – art, science, and human connection. I would say that the goal of the show hasn’t changed – the goal has always been to bring a group of strangers together for a moment of collective euphoria. But the specific things we explore over the course of the show are different, because of course, the world is different, technology has evolved. For those who don’t know, can you briefly explain what sort of entertainment we can expect to see from the Blue Man Group? I think that you can expect to experience a very visceral type of entertainment. We really hope to make you feel things, to feel perhaps a little stirring inside yourself, a reminder of how you used to feel as a child. Maybe a refresher on how to see the world with a sense of wonder again.

What does the blue face paint represent? We didn’t really overanalyse in the beginning. We knew we wanted an image that would be arresting, that might cut through the visual noise. As we walked down the streets of New York, we wondered what would cause people to stop and look, to break out of their own thoughts for a moment and reconnect, interact with the world around them, and the image of this bald and blue character came to mind. Why don’t the Blue Men speak? Funny thing, the Blue Men seem to say much more without speaking than they do with words. Do you know how many Blue Men there are worldwide? And, also, what do you need to become a Blue Man? We probably have about 50 active Blue Men in the world at any given time. Our casting team typically sees about 1000 people in order to find just seven. It takes a very unique skill set to be a Blue Man. There needs to be a visual uniformity to the Blue Men, so you have to be between 5'10" and 6'2", you need to be a skilled drummer, and acting training is definitely an asset. What’s the biggest misconception about the group? Great question. I think that most people don’t know how often we are working on new content and updating the show with new material. We always want to keep the show fresh and relevant, responding to the world around us. In your other shows you supply raincoats for some audience members? Can you tell us why? And will this be something we will see in Christchurch? Well, they protect clothing from any stray paint that might find its way off the stage, but even better – they add a bit of excitement and anticipation. You just never know what might happen.

The cold rain mellowed into a steady drizzle, anointing the mid-city woodland of Hagley Park as darkness fell. Through the soft cloak of night, the sound of footsteps echoed as a procession of guests made their way to ilex. The function centre in the Botanic Gardens was trimmed for a banquet, as elegantly as the attendees were dressed for the evening. The Selwyn House Old Girls' Association (SHOGA) had staged the inaugural gala dinner as an opportunity to celebrate the past, maintain the present and look to the future of Selwyn House School.

The place in which hymns are usually voiced and prayers whispered, rang with other sounds of joy and celebration as the world of fashion rallied to the cause. Ronald McDonald House South Island needed funds and so it was that the Transitional Cathedral became, for the evening, a chapel of couture. The creations of 13 designers were paraded as the first fashion fundraiser for RMHSI to be held in this cathedral, was enthusiastically received.

Candy & Cuba Fashion Show at Quinns of Merivale Sugarplums and divinely delicious garments were on the menu at Quinns of Merivale when Fiona Jackson brought her exotic collection to town. Glamorous, yes, but classy to the maximum, the fashion feast both teased and appeased the appetites of eyes and sweet teeth alike. Jars of sinfully toothsome confectionery, vied for attention with the heavenly creations modelled expertly on the boutique floor. Each morsel, made either of fondant or fabric, made one crave for more and fuelled the desire for excellence in garments and chocolate. The dream of wonder ended all too soon as the last high heel clicked off the catwalk, but there was a lot of candy to polish off before evening’s end!

NZSO Members' Party There was a buzz of excitement at Horncastle Arena as music lovers gathered for an evening of pure bliss. As well as the concert, supporters and sponsors of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) attended a cocktail party to mingle with friends old and new. The chat was of the season ahead and this evening’s programme featuring the works of Lilburn, Brahms and concluding with the mighty Beethoven. Good company plus the music of the masters, created an occasion to remember and the anticipation for next time.

GRACI Foundation Fundraiser The crystalline sweep of the Christchurch Art Gallery was lit up like a belt of diamonds, welcoming guests to the fun within. The array of fine food and French Champagne, which flavoured the evening with edible opulence, gilded the more serious agenda of the party. The GRACI Foundation, which is another name for the Gynaecological Cancer Research Trust, organised the event to raise much-needed funds to combat the many manifestations of this disease. Silent and live auctions – the latter loud with enthusiastic bidding – took place causing money to flow in to support the cause. Added to that, a jolly good time was had by all.

Ben Foster
the Balance oF Form and motion Ben Foster creates life-sized animal sculptures out of enamel-coated aluminium. He speaks with Victoria Tait about his career, passions and international clients.
Ben Foster comes across as one of those rare characters content and at peace with his life, and hugely passionate about his career. Given this, it is not surprising Ben’s works of art can now be found all over the world, including Brazil, london, dubai, singapore and australia. he recently took a commission in the French riviera, creating two dogs to sit on the side of an infinity pool overlooking the mountains. From a young age, Ben was enthusiastic about art and was fortunate enough to have his mother and father encourage him. at the age of 16, he left high school in hawke’s Bay to pursue his love at art school. “my tutor took me aside and said although he could see art was my true passion he felt I would benefit from gaining some life experience,” Ben recounts. he soon put his tuition on hold and instead took up a furniture-making apprenticeship, which later led to boat building. in his early twenties he moved to christchurch and was involved in fitting out the interior of a 60ft yacht. a fondness for sailing and the sea then encouraged him to accept the challenge of sailing from nelson to new caledonia with three friends on a 38ft yacht. the plan was for it to take seven days, but, due to some unpredictable weather conditions, it took three weeks. This affinity with the ocean and natural world has inspired Ben’s work, with the physical landscape so present in his designs. at the age of 26, Ben’s life took a turn for the better, as he met his now-wife liana. Understanding art was his first love and vocation, Liana prompted Ben to return to study, which saw him graduate from christchurch Polytechnic institute of technology (today’s ara institute of canterbury), before the pair set their sights on travelling europe. While overseas, Ben saw first-hand that “sculpting could be a viable option for a career”. With the influences of the European art world behind him and a new worldly perspective on life, Ben and his wife returned to new Zealand focused on making art his career first and foremost. the couple intended on settling in a main city, but instead fell in love with the Kaikoura coast – a place that speaks to Ben’s artistic side. “my work is largely a response to the natural environment. For example, Golden Boy is the trusty labrador, who is a work companion and man’s best friend, Shadow (shark
21
sculpture) is a misunderstood creature that plays a large role in my everyday life, as i’m a surfer. “i like to see the humour and light harnessed when people view my work – it’s that instant recognition.” Ben tells Style he recently he had an email from a woman who has a tattoo of Golden Boy, and another person who has a large image of it covering their livingroom wall. “as an artist it’s great to see what your work means to people and how they interpret it.” So, how did Ben find his place in this animal world? it all started with an exhibition he was involved in at the Auckland Art Gallery where the topic was to find your sense of self, and for this Ben chose a seal. “i’ve always loved the seal, and living in Kaikoura and surfing, they play a large role in my everyday life. The piece sold straight away and that was the beginning of it all.” Although Ben’s figurative animal sculptors have gained a huge international following he also sculpts abstract works. “i like to go back and forth between the two pieces. my abstract works are also very linked to my environment exploring the erosion, sand, wind, and the surf.” What’s next on the cards for Ben Foster? This year, he has already sold Speedy, the greyhound, to a couple he met at dinner in london. he is working on a commission from dubai for a falcon and the next project he’s thinking of is a deer – “Just the simple form of the doe, peeled back”. he will be holding another solo show in auckland this november and, possibly – hopefully – something in christchurch in the near future.

Searching for excellence What does it take to win House of the Year? To find out, Victoria Tait speaks with judge Faye Pearson-Green in the lead-up to the Registered Master Builders 2016 House of the Year competition. PhotograPhy cHaRlie jackson
More than 330 homes will be assessed for this year’s registered Master Builders house of the year, with judges travelling around new Zealand to make their assessments at the time of writing and winners set to be announced later, in July and august. a team of industry experts is tasked with finding the best builds in the country, looking for top quality in new homes, show homes, renovations and the homes of builders. Style has been allowed a sneak peak inside one home, but must keep mum on certain aspects, until the winners are revealed. What we can tell you is that this house is a finalist in Gold & Category Award Carters New home $1 million-$2 million build. it’s located in Marshlands and built by Metzger Builders, who have won a gold award five years in a row at house of the year. last year, Metzger Builders was awarded the Supreme award and canterbury registered Master Builders 2015 house of the Year; Gold & Category Award Carters New home $1 million-$2 million; and Plumbing World Bathroom excellence award, for a build in clearwater.

Celebrity Style Gwyneth Paltrow recently purchased a stunning $6.37 million Venice-inspired home in Santa Barbara. The home has ocean views and gorgeously groomed gardens. Set on 466sqm, the estate has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, 6-metre skylights and high ceilings. This is a fabulous addition to Gwyneth’s US property portfolio that includes two other California properties, a $14 million home in Malibu and an equestrian estate in Los Angeles.
lalique René-Jules Lalique founded Lalique more than a century ago, in 1888. Initially a jewellery designer, he thrived as a freelancer during the art nouveau movement in Paris. He opened his first store in 1885, on Place Gaillon, and, by 1890, had expanded to three more shops in Paris. It was then he started the transition from jewellery to enamel and glass. After his death in 1945, the company was passed down to his son Marc, who was to bring Lalique into the age of crystal, while the fragrance business was developed later, by his daughter Marie-Claude Lalique. In 2008, the business was sold to Swiss-owned company Art and Fragrance, under the management of Silvio Denz. Through these changes the brand has endured the test of time and become the ultimate symbol of French luxury. Our lux pick for this month is the Tourbillons Grand Vase.

How to Feng SHui Your Bedroom Are you having trouble sleeping? With a few small changes to your bedroom layout you’ll find the bedroom can become a peaceful, sleep-inducing atmosphere. Bed placement. This is crucial, as it reflects your wealth, health, and love life. Your bed should be placed at the furthest point of the room, facing the door but not in line with it. it should also be a good height to allow energy to pass under. Choose earth tones. By using a neutral colour palette you will welcome a peaceful atmosphere. Feng-shui specialists recommend warm earth and skin tones, such as cream, peach and tan, as well as light blue and grey. Avoid bright colours, such as red and orange. Create balance and symmetry. use identical bedside tables and lamps to create symmetry and balance. Remove any technology. televisions, computers, and phones give off a lot of energy. the bedroom should be a place of rest and contemplation, without the distraction of the stresses of the day. Be careful with mirror placement. mirrors are usually bad feng shui as they bounce energy, which can, in turn, keep you awake and restless. if you must have a mirror in the bedroom, think about placing it behind closed doors. Winter FroST And PlAnTS Landscape architect Craig Wilson offers advice on how to prepare your garden for Canterbury’s hard winter frost. Good landscape design is always a considered response to the requirements of a design brief. When designing in Canterbury there are some specific factors that need to be allowed for to create landscapes that are great spaces for people to be in and that are visually cohesive, distinctive and successful. A factor that can’t be ignored in Canterbury is its regular, hard winter frosts. This will have a distinct impact on garden design. Plant selection in Canterbury requires specimens that have a good degree of ‘hardiness’, which describes a plant’s ability to survive frosts. This means, for example, we generally can’t plant the frost-tender subtropicals that do so well in Auckland’s climate, or even some of the frost-tender natives people love, such as nikau palms and pohutukawas. However, the frequency of frosts and a cooler winter, coupled with a warm summer, will also mean Canterbury gets true seasons and our flowering plants and trees will tend to put on better seasonal displays than our ‘sister’ northern cities. If you
live in Sumner, or on one of the hill suburbs, chances are your property is above the ‘frost line’ and you can get away with a wider plant selection – frost-tender succulents, for example, which just won’t survive on the flat. In these scenarios a good degree of local knowledge and an ability to read existing vegetation patterns is essential for successful garden design that works with an existing niche microclimate. Pockets of frost shelter can be established over time on most properties by plantings and built structures that create their own microclimate and protection. A shrub or tree canopy can provide shelter for frost-tender seedlings and young plants to establish. The eave overhang on a house can provide some frost shelter, which citrus, for example, will typically require. Another unexpected frost-free place around most homes is beside the external heat-pump condenser unit. The airflow of the operating unit in winter creates an airflow that can stops a frost settling, allowing for some interesting plant choices.

Playgrounds Like all facilities in Christchurch, children’s playgrounds suffered the devastating effects of the earthquakes. Five years on, we are seeing new exciting children’s areas pop up all over the city. With the opportunity to rethink how our children play, Christchurch now has some of the most interactive playgrounds in New Zealand.
Merivale interactive PlayGround Noticing a lack of playgrounds in the Merivale area, the Merivale Community Playground Society arranged for a playground design to be presented to the local Community Board. This was considered and then approved in August 2014. The council was unable to pay for the full cost of installation so the society raised funds through the Give A Little project. $12,205 was donated by 12 generous donors. The playground features interactive play equipment including an arc ladder, bird’s nest swing and Jupiter carousel. The play area is between Rugby Street and Office Road. > For more on local playgrounds, visit www. theunder5scollective.co.nz
MarGaret MaHy FaMily PlayGround This is the largest playground in the southern hemisphere. Named after Canterbury’s famous author, this is a playground for all, with separate activity zones for different age groups. Activities include a four-metre-wide slide and double flying fox, water play with cannons, sprinklers and a splash pad with controllable jets. For little ones there is a sandpit area, rockers and a crawl tunnel. The playground is free to visit and open all day, every day. There is a free carpark at 177 Armagh Street.
stonebrook, rolleston This unique playground is situated in a new subdivision of Rolleston. With a farm theme, the playground has both physical and imaginative play options. Activities include a pretend wool shed and a basket swing for children. A separate toddlers’ playground with a water play area features as part of the landscaping.
Halswell doMain Set in the beautiful reserve, this playground has the added benefit of connecting children with nature. There is a pond with natural wildlife, easy trails for family walks and paths and bridges that create a natural play area. The main feature in this new playground is a gorgeous train. For a moving experience, visit on a Sunday, and hop on the miniature railway. Halswell Miniature Trains runs rides for $2, from 1-4pm. Often there are remote-controlled sailboats on the lake, too.

Helen nutt: A BotAnicAl Artist Anne Hudson explores the difference between botanical art, botanical illustration and painting flowers. Through Helen Nutt’s artistry she finds a new appreciation for botanical paintings.
I love flowers, and I love paintings of flowers, but Helen Nutt’s paintings are not just beautiful they are also scientifically correct; they are a record of a species. Helen is a botanical illustrator and artist. “The greatest flower painters have been those who have found beauty in truth; who have understood plants scientifically, but who have yet seen and described them with the eye and hand of the artist.” – Wilfrid Blunt. What is the difference between botanical art, botanical illustration and painting flowers? Botanical illustration is concerned with the scientific identification of a plant. The illustration must be accurate so that the viewer might use the information to identify the plant in its natural habitat. Botanical art, on the other hand, emphasises the flower and is less concerned with providing all the botanical information. The aim is to draw on the aesthetic qualities of the plant to show the beauty of the plant. The last category, flower painting, is about pleasing the viewer with a nicely composed representation of flowers and does not have to be accurate – in fact, it may only give an impression of the plant. Helen Nutt’s paintings seem to encompass all three definitions; they are accurate, beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. Helen trained in Australia at the acclaimed Melbourne Botanical School, which encouraged her attention for detail and a passion for the pursuit of excellence in her work. As one of New Zealand’s finest botanical artist she is a leader in this field. Helen is meticulous in her research, studying the plant over its life cycle, so as to understand the plant through the seasons from winter dormancy, to leaf bud, to blossom, petal fall and to the ripening fruit

or flower. All of which is recorded meticulously in her workbook using pencil. “Observation is the key,” says Helen, “My subject is drawn true to size and I usually spend time preparing a tonal drawing, recording the direction of light onto the plant and where it falls together with notes about the botanical features of the plant including its colour. Light gives the painting life. The final painting is done with watercolour taking many hours of patient concentration. “It is surely a labour of love but when I have finished I feel the painting is a part of me.” Helen’s interest and commitment led her to becoming founding and past president of the Botanical Art Society of NZ Inc. She has also exhibited in the Canterbury Plains Florigium, which was prepared for the Christchurch Botanic Garden’s 150th birthday celebration in 2014. You might ask, “What is a florigium?” This art genre likes to use correct classical terms. A florigium is an exhibition of plants that are site-specific in that they are from a particular geographic area, in this case the Canterbury Plains. The artist’s objective is to compile a collection of scaled, measured and botanically correct paintings and drawings of plants from a specific location. Helen’s Clematis paniculata was included in the Christchurch Botanic Garden’s Collection. Opportunities to exhibit are rare, but Helen Nutt’s paintings are appropriately part of the North Canterbury’s Art in a Garden’s exhibitions, too. Helen’s commitment to this genre has convinced me to look at botanical paintings with a new appreciation for not only their aesthetic appeal, but also their accurate portrayal of nature.

LittLe Chefs With the sugar debate on every mother’s mind, we look at some natural sugar substitutes for home baking. Honey: Scrumptious honey is packed full of antioxidants and is the perfect sweetener for cakes and biscuits. Apple sauce: Instead of white sugar, swap in an equal amount of apple sauce. The natural sweetness from delicious apples is perfect in an afterdinner treat. Dates: With a low glycaemic index and a subtle sweetness, dates are perfect for brownie batter or the base of homemade granola bars. Substitute two-thirds of a cup for one cup of regular sugar. Puréed Banana: In the next loaf of banana bread, try using extra-ripe bananas and eliminating the sugar. The fruit naturally becomes sweeter as it ripens, so there’s no need for extra sugar.

Who stands behind the chair? stylist Dean Mooney has 28 years’ experience, international training and has been a salon owner for 17 years. this month, he gives us his advice on how to find a hair professional to suit your specific needs.
i’m not going to give you a list of colour and style dos and don’ts for the coming season – i know you wouldn’t have to look far and wide to find hints and tips contradicting these thoughts. There are so many people in the hair industry competing for your custom that it can get a little confusing. We live in a wonderful time where just about anything goes. through media our world has evolved to put nearly every choice in front of us. With styles ranging from the geometric verve of 1960s’ Vidal Sassoon, to the raw energy and texture of 1970s’ punk, the charm and sophistication of 1920s’ finger waves and curls, right through to the victory rolls and quiffs of the 1950s’ rockabilly

pin-up. Never before have all of these styles competed in the same fashion market, and yet, here we are. How do you find a stylist to suit your style? The single most important decision you can make is choosing the right hair professional to suit your taste, your expectations and your needs. each stylist has a certain set of skills. thinking all styles and all stylists are the same would be like expecting your local Indian restaurant to add a Spanish paella or Italian pasta dish to your order. When considering a change i strongly advise asking someone whose hair you admire. the advice of friends and colleagues is fine, but remember they are advising on what
makes them happy, and that may be different to what you want. be honest about your own hair requirements; daily maintenance required, products needed and budget for cutting and/ or colouring work. All these things play an important part in choosing a stylist. It is often a good idea to arrange a consultation with a new stylist before embarking on a change. The old saying “A picture says a thousand words” is hugely appropriate. Look for pictures that represent important details of the style you want (things like the outline, layers, length, fringe, colour, movement and texture). a good stylist will use their experience of face and body shapes, hair

length, texture, density, pre-existing condition, your maintenance routine, your expectations and preferences to put together a recommendation. Don’t be put off if a stylist enquires about products you use on your hair at home. these can seriously affect the quality of styling and especially chemical procedures. Most people wouldn’t dream of washing a delicate mohair jumper on a heavy-duty cycle in the washing machine, and yet undermine their investment in a colour and cut by using below-standard haircare products. My own style is to work as closely with how the hair grows and falls naturally, cutting to enhance its own qualities. When my client’s needs go beyond my specific set of skills, it is my responsibility to recommend another stylist to meet their needs, in-house or in another establishment. remember, it’s all about you.
There are personal staples in everyone’s beauty box. Some swear by mascara; others refuse to leave home without a red lip or the perfectly arched brow. for optimal NutritioN Holistic health and fitness specialist Elly McGuinness looks at how nutritional choices can have a huge impact on our health. The degree to which your body is nourished with optimal nutritional choices will have a profound effect on your overall health and wellbeing. It will influence your energy levels, your mental wellbeing, your ability to burn fat, and the strength of your immune system, among other things. One of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine was the Greek physician Hippocrates. He sums up the importance of optimal nutrition choices in one line: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” With winter upon us, now is a great time to focus on increasing the number of positive choices when it comes to nourishing our bodies with great nutrition.

Choose organiC organic farming places the utmost importance on caring for the soil because it forms the basis for health, for all life forms. Healthy soil encourages disease-resistant plants, which then transfers to the animals and people who consume those plants. By choosing organic, you are opting for food that has been grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and without the routine use of antibiotics. drink water Your body can survive a surprisingly long time without food, but it won’t last more than a few days without water. optimal hydration is critical to ensure our muscles and nerves function properly, and even mild dehydration can lead to feelings of lethargy. How much to drink? The answer is quite simple – drink until your wee is clear or almost clear. That’s an easy way to measure whether you’re getting enough.

plan to eat before you shop to minimise the chance of giving in to temptation foods – or shop online to minimise even further. make bulk meals to freeze for busy nights and set aside time to prepare a packed lunch the night before. Keep useful kitchen items in easyto-reach places – for example, put the blender on the bench rather than in the cupboard so that healthy smoothie preparation is quick and easy. Change only one small thing at a time You may feel overwhelmed by wondering where to start improving your nutrition. make one small, achievable change and once that becomes a habit (something you can do without a major effort), then focus on something else. small changes are the key to success. for example, instead of saying “i’m only going to eat wholefoods from now on and forever,” instead make your target more realistic such as, “i’m going to increase to eating at least four different vegetables per day, on at least five days every week.”
take time to plan and prepare for eating well it takes time and preparation to change your habits. schedule out time to write shopping lists, shop for food and prepare meals.

& szeChuan PePPer squid Squid is a robust and textured seafood. it requires the correct preparation to ensure it is perfectly cooked, and does not take on that unsavoury rubberlike quality. Andrew Brown shows us the way, with his modern take on a traditional cantonese dish.
ingreDientS
4 squid tubes (or 2 whole squid) 130g cornflour 130g rice flour ¼ tsp chilli powder 1 tsp Szechuan pepper (finely ground) 1 tsp flaky salt 200ml milk oil for frying

• to prepare the squid: For tubes, cut the tube in half lengthways and remove cartilage/cuttle bone (thin, clear shard that runs the length of the tube). Without completely cutting through, score the full length of the squid with lines approximately 5mm apart, on a 45-degree angle. if using whole squid, cut the tenticles and scrub to remove any of the hard sucker rings. From the tube, remove the beak and cut the triangle tail. Only use the cleaned tenticles and cleaned tube (as per above preparation). Cut the tubes and tenticles into bite-sized pieces. • Mix all dry ingredients well. • Place the squid into the milk (this ensures the dry ingredients stick to the squid). • Heat the oil to 185°C in a deep fryer. • Remove the squid from the milk and shake any excess milk, then dredge the squid through the dry ingredients (seasoning). • Fry small amounts of squid until the coating is crisp. remove and drain on a paper towel.
a taste OF MOrOccO Mosaic by Simo offers the exquisite taste of Morocco, in addington. WOrds VaneSSa OrtYnSkY PhOtOGraPhy charlie JackSOn
mosaic by simo transports guests to the streets of morocco for enticing authentic cuisine. As Christchurch’s first moroccan restaurant, mosaic provides an unforgettable, aromatic experience. located on busy lincoln road, the allday eatery is friendly and inviting. When we arrive for dinner we feel as though we have set foot in a friend’s dining room, surrounded by beautiful middleeastern lamps and vases on display. those looking to sample moroccan cuisine will be satisfied by the variety of dishes on offer at mosaic. during the day, the restaurant serves wraps and salads from its deli. the dinner menu is
traditional and infused with an array of herbs and spices. From mezze to tagines and briouat parcels, the options are a colourful medley of fresh ingredients. i resolve to return again soon to try more of the menu. at our server’s suggestion, we settle on the andalusian platter, which features vine-leaf wrapped dolmades, falafel, north african rolls, vegetable crudités, artichokes and olives. everything looks and tastes amazing, and allows us to sample a wide range of moroccan cuisine. the dishes are beautifully displayed with rich colours and scents. it is customary in morocco to enjoy
your meal at a leisurely pace and never rush, so we take our time with each dish. the traditional moroccan mint tea is must-try. served with a turkish delight, it comes in a gorgeous silver teapot. With delectable food and genuine hospitality, dining at mosaic by simo is truly a pleasure. and, as much as i’d love to keep mosaic by simo all to myself, moroccan food is to be enjoyed and shared with others. Christchurch is fortunate to have such incredible moroccan cuisine right on its doorstep and those looking for a truly authentic experience should certainly plan a visit.

Having recently arrived on the scene, Empire firmly cements st Asaph street as a hospitality and nightlife destination. nestled between café Valentino and Baretta, the eclectic Japanese gastropub beckons diners inside with its red neon glow. this izakaya offers a modern twist on the social pubstyle Japanese dining with not a tatami mat or low table in sight. The interior fit-out is clean, with soft interior lighting and red accents that complete a trendy, but inviting atmosphere. patrons are seated in booths or at high-top tables, which are removed later in the evening to reveal a cavernous dance floor. This, along with the expansive bar and loudspeakers, is evidence of a place with no intentions of early weekend closing. the menu offers a modern twist on traditional Japanese dishes, which encourages guests to sample a wide selection of the menu. the yakitori menu features an array of chicken skewers that are designed for sharing. the kushiyaki menu includes a variety of grilled meats, like pork belly and scallops, as well as vegetables. Both the yakitori and kushiyaki are served with either tare sauce or shio (sea salt). the larger izakaya dishes include both traditional and ‘new style’ selections that can also be enjoyed as mains. With a focus on flavour, the dishes offer inventive updates on authentic Japanese cuisine. As per Japanese custom, every dish is beautifully presented, another strength at Empire. the bar list is a little more tongue-in-cheek with cocktails such as ‘sum-ting yum’ as well as Asahi and must-try sake. those looking for fresh, inventive Japanese cuisine should get themselves to Empire right away. not only is the food mouthwateringly delicious, the atmosphere represents the new christchurch food scene that is steadily emerging. i’m sure you’ll agree that Empire signals the next generation of christchurch cool.

BMW on a charge
BMW’s electric-powered i3 gives Ross Kiddie a shock.
$22
WOF SIZZLING SAT WOF SPECIAL
I’ve been a member of the New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild for 28 years and value highly its annual Car of the Year Award. Last year’s winner was probably the most significant in the award’s history. The award was presented to BMW New Zealand for the i3 – it is what BMW describe as a mega-city vehicle. Significantly, the i3 is electric powered. It’s the first time an unconventional vehicle has won the award, and that suggests to me that times are definitely changing. The motor industry is viewing a whole new strategy in the way we drive and the propulsion for doing so. It’s a little bit of a lie to say BMW’s i3 is totally electric powered. The test car was fitted with what BMW describe as a range extender – a two-cylinder internal combustion engine courtesy of BMW’s motorcycle range. It will double the distance the i3 can travel – up to 400km-plus depending on conditions and auxiliary draw such as air conditioning. Like I said, the petrol-fuelled unit is an option on the i3, it is there for those who fear range anxiety, or who need just that little bit of extra distance from the batteries on their daily commute, or the ability to travel longer distances on a regular basis. The i3 utilises the latest generation lithium-ion battery technology, up to 94Ah from 60Ah previously. Both AC and DC charging systems are incorporated, the latter will charge 80 per cent of battery power in 40min.

Technology aside, the i3 is a surprise. Beneath the bold, quirky look lies a spirited easy-to-drive model; it feels superquick with immediate drive, the strong torque flow an electric motor develops is dominant, it also has decisive braking under deceleration. BMW claims an acceleration time of 8.1sec (7.2sec, solely electric) to make 100km/h from a standstill, and if laws allowed it would reach a 150km/h top speed. I’m in no doubt they are achievable performance figures. The i3 has energy at all speeds, acceleration is constant, to my way of thinking it is a lot more than just an urban commuter, it feels spirited at highway speed, and its whisper-quiet motion is relaxing. The latter needs to be kept in perspective, the i3 makes little sound as it moves; that being the case, the driver needs to be aware that pedestrians don’t always hear it coming, and in built-up areas that could jeopardise their safety. That didn’t happen during my time in the test car, but what was noticeable were the looks it received from passers-by. The i3’s styling is very avant-garde, it has styling cues and design elements that are ground-breaking, yet fit with its role – it is a vehicle that stands out with its concept, and beneath its chunky design is an environmentally-friendly cockpit, which can be optioned to suit each eco-conscious buyer. The BMW i3’s ideology will lure the person who is concerned about the welfare of the environment and just needs a commuter where distance of travel isn’t a consideration, but at $74,300 it does carry a premium price ($85,300 with range extender). However, any i3 buyer who is familiar with BMW vehicles will automatically be at home in the i3, it is intuitive inside and simplistic in its operating systems. It is also a useful four-seater. There are two rear-hinged doors that allow easy access to a cosy rear section, and it has the functions that make BMW vehicles desirable in the first instance
The speCs PRice: BMW i3, $85,300. Dimensions: Length, 3999mm; width, 1775mm; height, 1578mm. configuRation: Two-cylinder, rear-wheel-drive, 647cc, 28kW (125kW), 56Nm (250Nm), automatic. PeRfoRmance: 0-100km/h, 8.1sec. – satellite navigation, i-Drive and BMW Connected Drive. Vision is high with large glass areas, and although the tyres are thin there’s never a point where you think the i3 is vulnerable. And, being short, it has fabulous manoeuvrability with a 10m turning circle. I’ve seen several i3s on Christchurch roads, and that would suggest people are looking to alternative transport yet understand personal motor vehicles are still very much a necessity. The i3 arrives in New Zealand at a time when the awareness of electric cars has increased hugely. Hopefully an increase in quick charge stations will pop-up for those who do choose electric only. My best friend is a Nissan Leaf owner, he is very much a ‘greenie’. He and the i3 have certainly heightened my awareness of where we are heading in a world where sustainability is becoming a global demand.

The late morning light of the unusually warm autumn danced about the courtyard at Baretta, welcoming guests to the True Grit Breast Cancer Cure Luncheon. Flutes of luscious pink Champers tickled the mouth and prepped the palate for the treats to come. Dishes of delight, nobly conjured from the kitchen were presented, destined to be remembered as gems of the chef’s genius. Bids made in the silent auction provided the means to fund the war on this terrible disease which scourges the world. Special guest Shane Cortese stole much of the attention, his presence lending support to the campaign. The banquet ended all too soon, but in triumph, to be heralded a success.

Ryman Healthcare Season of RNZB Wizard of Oz First Night
Aaron and Bronte Perriam, Susannah Lees-Jeffries
A curious glow suffused the Gloucester Room, catching the eye’s corner before vanishing, only to reappear as faces moved through the mysterious pools of light. The tint was a lush green that lured the mind to believe that one really was in the Emerald City. This location was of course the Isaac Theatre Royal, the backstage tense with final limbering as dancers made ready. The Ryman Healthcare Season of The Wizard of Oz presented by The Royal New Zealand Ballet was about to begin and guests attending the pre-show party, filed in to join Dorothy on her journey along the Yellow Brick Road.

The promise of a stylish night out drew a multitude to The Columbo where deep within, platters were being loaded with goodies and glasses charged with liquid treasure. When at last the doors were flung open, the tide of guests entered, setting the mall alive with the babble of voices. Following the rounds of food and beverages, the show began. Long-limbed models strode between rows of seated viewers, presenting garments for appreciation, the completion of each circuit drawing applause. As the final click of high heels on the catwalk faded away, boutiques opened up for the opportunity to shop at leisure and indulge in another morsel or three of naughty but nice comestibles.

Do I Look Fat In thIs? I think when women say, ‘Do I look fat in this?’ they’re asking for some deeper validation. It’s not about fashion advice. – JESSICA WEINER
Hands up if you are guilty of asking your significant other the dreaded question: “Does this make me look fat?” In that moment, you forget the pressure that has been placed on the one you love to deliver not their answer, but the right answer, in the most unscripted, natural and sincere way, ensuring it’s exactly what you want to hear. Let’s take a step back and see what has driven you to the point where you feel you require this acceptance or acknowledgment from another party. Have we – as women and girls – ever been completely happy with our body image? Probably not. Is there an exceptional woman out there who loves
everything about herself and doesn’t give a damn what others think of her? Call me a cynic, but somehow, I don’t think so. I dare say even the likes of Heidi Klum or Charlize Theron have their “fat days”. It’s ironic that the one person we are all ultimately striving for acceptance from is the same person who looks back at us each day in the mirror – ourself. Wouldn’t it be amazing to think that one day we could all look in that same mirror and affirm the beautiful lyrics from musical maestro John Legend: “‘Cause all of me, loves all of you. Love your curves and all your edges. All your perfect imperfections.” Right! Now, back to where
we started. Can I just put it out there for the defence of our poor partners that the next time you feel the question brewing at the back of your throat – “Does this make me look…” – stop, reflect and answer your internal self with the answer, “YES!” Because, ultimately, if you’re asking the question, you already know the answer, don’t you. Just listen to your inner stylist. #happypartner #keepingitreal
