Life and its opportunities can take you by surprise. My career in publishing started in Christchurch, took me into high fashion world in London, and back. With a love of the Garden City and a desire to live in my hometown, I am thrilled with the opportunity to be the new editor of Style. I have always loved receiving Style in my letterbox each month, and would like to thank my predecessor Majka Kaiser for passing me an already beautiful and successful magazine. Just like our homes, cars and wardrobes, magazines need an update every now and then. Therefore, in the
coming months we will introduce new features, new sections and a new voice to Style – without losing its charm. Already in this issue you will notice the addition of a house feature (Salisbury Street apartment), Style Arts and a fashion editorial (shot around our central city). My aim is for Style to be the voice of Christchurch, showcasing the best of everything in order to give you inspiration to create your ultimate lifestyle. Victoria Tait STYLE EDITOR

AromAx Diffuser ReVieW Can technology and nature work together? The Aromax diffuser is an electronic home diffuser. With a minimalist cone-shape design, this product combines the scent of nature with modern-day technology. We put this to the test and see if it lives up to expectations. The design really does look very stylish in a home environment; with so many colour options this is indeed a very smart diffuser. With all technology there is the initial fear of how complex is this going to be? The Aromax diffuser comes with very easy-tofollow instructions, that take you step by step through the set-up process, which is as uncomplicated as the design. Once turned on the noise is very subtle. The only issue is in finding where to place the diffuser in your home, as you do need a

power outlet and for this reason it cannot be near water. The scent is extremely powerful; immediately the room is filled with the smell of ‘oriental blossom’. There is an adjustable fragrance output, too. So, if you are in a home environment or small space we would suggest the lowest option. The fragrance is quite pleasant and certainly not a cheap artificial smell. You really can recognise the notes within the fragrance. With a range scents to choose from, it's very important you choose one you can dentify with. We recommend the Aromax as a stylish and contemporary option for a scent-sational home environment.

Five years after the Christchurch earthquakes closed its Gloucester Street gallery, the Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA) will open its doors to the public for the first time from 10am-5pm on Saturday, 13 February. The gallery will then be open every day from 10am-5pm. Director and Principal Curator Paula Orrell says, “We have a spectacular building to share with everyone, and a really significant exhibition to launch it with.” The launch exhibition, Precarious Balance, is a group exhibition of works by New Zealand and international contemporary artists. Orrell says, “It considers the balancing act of Christchurch, and how the city is rebuilding itself. It also explores a global question of imbalances in society, and how contemporary artists are addressing social and political issues to consider a counter perspective in precarious times.”

Five Minutes with Stewart Buchanan
stewart buchanan is one of the visiting experts to this month's whisky festival, dramfest. the global ambassador for benriach provides his insight into the world of whisky. can you explain the difference between a single malt whisky and blends? Single Malt Scotch Whisky can only come from one distillery, everything in that bottle will be from under one roof. Each distillery will have its own distinct character depending on its unique water source, location geographically, production techniques, shape of Pot Still and also the preferred style of cask used in maturation (e.g. American Oak, Sherry or a combination of both). Pot still distillation is a small ‘batch’ style of distillation which can give varying characters from deeper, heavier spirit to purer, lighter, fruitier spirit. Simply put, blended whisky will contain a combination grain and
many different malt whisky from all over Scotland, with each master bBlender having his own secret recipe. In most cases blended whiskies will be matured for only three years, which is the minimum time permitted to be called Scotch whisky although there are some five, eight,12-year superior, deluxe blends out there on the market.” what are the key flavours? “There are many flavours and characters across the different single malts available. The flavour is going to be influenced greatly by the cask style used in maturation. American Oak, which will be anything from light to rich gold in colour in the glass, will give you butterscotch, vanilla, cinnamon, even sometimes hints
of dried coconut. Sherry casks, most commonly darker amber/ mahogany in colour, will impart a richer darker characters; raisin, dates, figs, dark chocolate all being very typical notes. Over the many years of maturation in the warehouse, it is important to never let the cask dominate the whisky, you always have to maintain the balance, making sure you can taste that particular distillery's character, which comes from its regional location and production techniques.” what do different regions offer, in terms of flavour? “Scotland has such diverse landscapes which will offer so many characters whether from the water, climate or geographical location and
this will come across in the single malt produced in each region. Lowlands will offer a lighter style spirit full of green apples, a crisp citrus and sweet barley character. The Islands obviously being coastal are going to be smokier in style due to the traditional burning of local peat in the drying of the barley at the malting stage. Speyside offers orchard fruits, even tropical fruits, in abundance on the palate, also contrasting spices and a rich nuttiness can be found. The highlands cover the largest area and also has the most diverse landscape; the rugged coastline of the north, the higher mountain glens and the rolling fertile hills of the north east. There is a style for everyone, gentle coastal smoke, light heather honey sweetness or a heavy oily rich character it’s all there.”

Winnie Bagoes Rangiora Opening
Nicky Moore, Halena Hitchcock
Retro posters and advertisements adorned the walls and the aroma of pizza haunted the building like a friendly ghost. The grand opening of Winnie Bagoes in the village of Rangiora has given a new destination for diners and a temptation to lure the tastebuds away from the city for a spell. Heavy wooden tables groaned under the weight of the fare which fuelled the party as more guests filed in. The welcoming atmosphere, an eclectic cocktail of decades and styles, was difficult to break away from when the time came to go home but, there is always another day at Winnie Bagoes.

Down in the park where gentle summer breezes wafted, the sounds of entertainment were starting to be heard. Amid the leafy trees, guests were filing in to the arena which dominated the clearing as out of sight, buskers were warming up their skills for the night ahead. The fizz of wine in glasses sounded a merry prelude to the evening and the goodies proffered on laden platters, provided the perfect accompaniment. The VIP Opening Night party for the SCIRT World Buskers Festival 2016, signalled the beginning of ten days of fun and many reasons not to stay at home.

“I had a love for flowers and I loved sewing so to me it was a natural union.” – Jenny Gillies to earth. “it takes three months to make one costume,” she tells me, “And from the initial conception, the shape, form and idea of what the final outcome is continually evolves.” This evolution is what she loves about the creative process. she says she could not have achieved what she has over the past 20 years without the support and love of her family and husband John, an artist in his own right. Jenny says his
support and encouragement has really been what keeps her going, “sometimes we have a creative moment together and really achieve a great outcome.” she points to a picture of her husband dressed in one of her creations, ‘Thistle’, in her book FlorabunDance Wearable Flowers, saying “and that’s what an amazing husband will do for you.” Jenny refers to her career as her creative mid-life crisis and says that “it really did take her

and her family by surprise. it seems, however, that she always had the talent to make a hugely successful career. A passion for sewing and quilting from an early age gave Jenny the basis for her costuming. “My mother was very talented at sewing and i found i had acquired her skills,” says Jenny. initially she started designing and making costumes for her children’s theatre productions and then for st Andrew's College, which in turn was what lead to designing costumes for film, theatre and opera. finding that she had natural talent and flair she entered the Montana World of Wearable Art Awards show. Little did she know she would become a multiple award winner over the next 10 years. realising her talent had matured, Jenny was ready for the next step in her career. “i had a love for flowers and i loved sewing, so to me it was a natural union,” says Jenny. in 1996, Jenny sent a model to the Christchurch races wearing a large sunflower hat and a green suit. The response was amazing and the next morning Jenny’s sunflower hat was on the front page of The Press. However, at this point no one knew who the creator of the hat was – it was her friends who informed the media who she was, where she lived and anything else they needed to know. “[it] was really the beginning of it all,” she says. “it was from this that the Christchurch floral Trust commissioned my first show in 1996, A Floral Fantasy.” for this Jenny produced 24 floral costumes that were worn by ballet dancers. “it was amazing to see how her costumes could come alive on

"In post-earthquake Christchurch, architects’ and builders’ views on construction processes have changed. We are looking for strength, lightness and speed.”
Designed by Warren & Mahoney for Summitbuild Construction, 26a Salisbury Street is the front unit in a three-apartment block. These high-end apartments have used an innovative building technology that is a first for Christchurch. I met with Summitbuild Construction director Joseph o’Donnell, and Warren & Mahoney principal Daryl Maguire to find out why this apartment is so unique. At 250 square metres, this dwelling is definitely pitched at the luxury end of the market. From the outside my eye is drawn to the soaring angular peaked roofline, which is a classic Warren & Mahoney style. The use of cedar and zinc on the exterior gives the building a timeless sophistication. Joseph o’Donnell says, “We really wanted a building that in years to come will be as iconic as some of Sir Miles Warren's early work – I believe we achieved that.” on entering the apartment i am surprised by its size. rising over three levels and boasting two living rooms, four bedrooms, three bathrooms and four toilets, there is more than enough room for a growing family. The lower level comprises of three bedrooms and two bathrooms and has internal access from the garage. Beautiful timber stairs take me up to a large window and onto the second level.

it’s on entering the second level that this apartment truly comes to life. With high ceilings, large angular windows and neutral interior, the entire space gives you a sense of weightlessness. An open plan living, dining and kitchen area have been designed beautifully with a fully integrated kitchen and caeserstone benchtop. To the left of the living area is a formal lounge where I find myself in comfort and luxury. There are built in bookshelves, an Escea gas fire and sliding doors that lead to an entertaining area. This is the perfect place to curl up with a book during the winter months or entertain guests in the summer. on the top level the master bedroom and ensuite is a sanctuary of its own. Completely private from the rest of the house, this area is truly designed for relaxation. Joseph o’Donnell tells me, “Sustainability and eco-friendly buildings are something we are passionate about, and that factored heavily into the design.” This apartment is modern luxury. it makes me feel more like i am in los angeles than Victoria Street. However, what I find truly remarkable is the innovative technology that has been used in the building construction. i am told that apart from the ground floor slabs, each house is constructed from cross-laminated timber panels. These are manufactured off-site by nelson-based company, XlaM. although cross-laminated products have been available internationally for about 30 years,
the timber product is relatively new in New Zealand. This is a very exciting product for Christchurch as the cross-laminated timber offers a lightweight alternative to concrete; a building constructed of cross-laminated timber will be around half the weight of a concrete building, which is a big plus for our new builds. Daryl Maguire explains that in post-quake Christchurch, architects’ and builders’ views on construction processes have changed. “We are looking for strength, lightness and speed and we believe the strong and innovative XLAM product will prove to be one of the new ways forward in new residential and commercial construction in Christchurch.” Daryl Maguire says that in their design, Warren and Mahoney decided to deliberately showcase the timber by exposing it in the ceiling, walls and floors. “We have exposed and expressed the timber in selected locations. It has also been coated with a translucent whitewash so that the timber does not age or yellow.” The effect of this gives the interior of the apartment a natural and warm feel. The Salisbury Street apartments are the first multi-storey residential project in New Zealand to feature XlaM ClT panels. The result of this is a forward-thinking architecturally designed home that has really lifted the bar for construction in Christchurch.

A Home Office
Lucy Wilkie of Frobisher Interiors offers some tips on how to best create a sophisticated home office that is stylish and functional. A home office should never lack sophistication or elegance, it is a place to retreat to and be motivated. It is important to have objects around you that inspire and set the mood, whether that be a relaxed sofa or a chic armchair – such as the Virginie Carver chair featured here. You need place in which you can focus and function.

When furnishing your office think of it as an extension of your home. It's nice to keep up to date with what is trending, but remember the room should reflect your personal style. It is also imperative to have adequate storage to house files and paperwork, or if they are on show make sure they are organised in a stylish and functional way.

A nEW COnCEpT Carpet Court opens a new concept store to showcase a full range of flooring products. talking to the experts, we discover 2016 trends and the latest products that will make incorporating these into your home easy.
Moving from its Hornby location to 237 Blenheim Road, Carpet Court's new concept store showcases a full range of products and pricing across carpet, vinyl, wood and laminate planking. As a concept store the customer is able to see and experience the flooring. In fact, the majority of the product is laid out on the shop floor, allowing customers to get an idea of the look and feel. The team remains the loyal Hornby crew with many years’ experience between them. Seeing the products in large samples on the floor helps in understanding textures and colours as well as what combinations will work well together. You can take your shoes off, walk around and feel the textures of the carpet, and get sense of what hard flooring works with what carpet. Talking with the team at Blenheim Road we find out what the trends are for 2016.
Current flooring trends
Hard Flooring There is a definite shift towards more hard-wood-inspired flooring in living and dining areas of the home. “This is a European influence,” says sales
consultant Donna-Maree Van Grinsven. “We find customers are looking for thick, plush carpet in the bedrooms and more hard flooring in the living.” Because it’s more durable, hard flooring is better suited to our Kiwi lifestyle. “One of the bestselling products at Carpet Court is the Quick Step Laminate,” says Donna-Maree, “This is a great product and perfect for the Christchurch climate, keeping the cool out in winter, and it’s UV-resistant for the summer and easy to maintain.” The Quick Step Laminate flooring is also more scratch-resistant than wood, which makes for easy living. The Quick Step Impressive range has a 10-year wet area warranty thanks to its HydroSeal water-repellent coating on the bevels. With trends moving towards hard flooring sales consultant Eleanor Campbell says, “It’s a product that I feel reassured selling to a customer as there are so many benefits.”

Design Trends Chinoiserie Chinoiserie sprang from the european notion of Chinese style, which dates back to the 17th century, when european explorers brought back art, pottery and furniture as well as elaborate depictions of design and culture. Various european monarchs, such as Louis XV of France, gave special favour to Chinoiserie. entire rooms at Château de Chantilly were painted with Chinoiserie compositions. It was also popular in russia where Catherine the Great redesigned her rooms using
Chinoiserie interiors. Chinoiserie peaked in the 18th century, at which time it was commercialised due to the high demand. By the 19th century it was superseded by the neoclassical era although it never really disappeared. We are now seeing contemporary interpretations of Chinoiserie in many designs. Including high use of colours, such as yellows and blues, textured fabrics, silks and velvets. Chinoiserie can bring texture and colour, instantly uplifting any room in the house.

Polished Metal Dazzling, gold, silver and copper metal finishes is a trend that has been taken from the catwalk and is now available in home design. Create a utilitarian feel with polished metals in sparse white interiors, or an antique look by adding textured fabrics. Using the combination of all three metals – gold, silver and copper – will creates an exciting vibe.

Think rich deep blues, lush velvet couches, and royal blue textured wallpapers. This trend has been sweeping Europe by storm throughout the autumn/winter seasons and will soon arrive at our doors. Mix blue furnishings with grey interiors for a sleek look, or to create old-world charm add deep greens and dark timber furnishings. Remember, blue is a cold colour so you might want to offset this with warm colours; bright yellows and greens in soft furnishings will work well.

A GreAt City risinG From commercial buildings to home interiors Christchurch now offers an eclectic impression of all our individual styles. We are creating a new, better, stronger city than before, while still retaining the history and past where we can. WORDS VICTORIA TAIT
Now the earthquakes and media hype has subsided, I feel I’m left living in a city of constant construction and demolition. The hammering noise of building has become so common it’s hard to remember what a normal city sounds like. Every time I head out on to the streets I am diverted to yet another new route, encounter more detours, or find myself waiting in traffic queues for a crane to move huge steel beams into place. My driveway is blocked with vehicles due to the next-door neighbours' repairs, and the streets themselves have been ripped up time and time again. The stress of it all builds up so much that weeks and months will go by before a new building is noticed. However, we are not merely spectators, but part of creating a new city. I was born and bred in Christchurch and have a true love for the city. My heart would sink each time I saw another building come down, it was like my childhood memories were been erased one street at a time. Soon I found it was hard to recall what
building was on a certain corner or what a street looked like before the earthquakes. This in turn meant I couldn’t appreciate how far Christchurch has come over the past five years. I now know I am living in what is and will be New Zealand's most architecturally renowned city. Now, I’ve started to take note by researching images and history of the places I loved in order to remember the past and look positively towards the future. Seeing the contrast of what has already been achieved makes me feel truly privileged to be part of the rebirth of a city. Further to this I have come to notice that every person in this city is now making their own mark on the architecture and design, from commercial buildings to home interiors – Christchurch is now an eclectic impression of all our individual styles. In focus this month is historical restorations. Christchurch has lost so many of its historical buildings, it is fascinating to see the style and interpretation applied to those that have been saved.
Knox Church was first known as the North Belt Church, built in 1880 as a wooden church, designed by Samuel Far. In 1902, due to an increase in attendances, architects robert and Edward England designed a new building in the distinctive Gothic revival style. The original wooden building was replaced in 1964 with a modern annex, which still stands today. during the earthquakes, this building was severely damaged, leaving only the timber frame still standing. Wilkie and Bruce architects have taken the remaining wooden frame and recreated this building with a contemporary feel.
ISaaC TheaTRe ROyal rESTorATIoN prior to the current Theatre royal there were two wooden theatres of the same name, one in 1863 and the next in 1876. Australian brothers Sydney and A.E. Luttrell designed the pre-quake brick theatre, with its classically inspired façade. This theatre opened with a performance of the musical comedy The Blue Moon to a packed house in February 1908. When the theatre was damaged in the February 22nd earthquake restoration looked almost impossible. However, a full restoration was undertaken, including the repair of the dome by Carolina Izzo, an internationally renowned, Wellington-based conservator, who trained in Florence, Italy. We now have our ‘Grand old Lady’ back in all her Edwardian splendour. These two projects are a perfect example how the new Christchurch is becoming a modern architecturally renowned city, that has taken the past and made a better future.

EARTHQUAKE FORCES FRESH APPROACH WITH ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS AND THERMOGLAZ Accounting Solutions evolved out of the February earthquakes when Louise and her then business partner decided to take different paths. A qualified Chartered Accountant and Business Adviser, Louise has built a fresh approach to her business that changes the way her team works with clients. “Our priority is to provide stability for our team and clients and to ensure we are each growing, succeeding and being the best we can be. Our innovative, fixed-price service offerings reflect this,” says Louise. When clients found their lives and accounts were turned upside after the earthquakes, the Accounting Solutions team worked with them to ensure they had the best service and solutions while working closely with the IRD recovery team. Their advice often resulted in providing a full account overhaul with new systems and structures for many clients. Working closely with clients in this way led Louise to overhaul their own service offerings to clients. Biz1, 2 and 3 provide three different accounting packages that
fit uniquely with the needs and budgets of each client. “Working with clients on a month to month basis gives them a far deeper understanding of their financials so we can support them to steadily and sustainably grow their business,” says Louise. “Clients need more direction and support than just accounting services,” says Louise. That’s why we’ve opened a new division within the business, called Lift Wealth and Business Coaching. Lift is a twelve-month training program designed to help you stabilize and grow your business within a small and supportive group of other business owners. The program uses a combination of online tools and group workshops. “Clients get to step out of the day-to-day grindstone and see the bigger picture of their business. There’s also the benefit of having a small team around you for support and to bounce ideas off.” The first of the Lift courses starts March 14th 2016. Thermoglaz has added doubleglazing to existing house’s in Canterbury for over 15 years, retaining the look and feel character wooden homes to the modern homes of today. Moving from their previous location at 37 Gasson St, Barry Neville has been able to expand the growth of manufacturing new Aluminium windows. With the large space available at the new premises they now have the workshop space to offer even greater service and manufacture. With winter just around the corner it’s time to start thinking about how well insulated your home is. Around 51% of energy use is lost through single glazed windows even if you have a well-insulated home. Thermoglaz has pioneered and developed the best retro-fit double-glazing
system that is available today. This is for both wood and aluminum windows. “We’ll provide you with the most professional and reliable system available. Furthermore, we’ll guarantee it stands the test of time. We deliver exactly what we promise, and we don’t cut corners,” says Barry. Here’s what one of our happy customers say about Thermoglaz. “What a big improvement in reducing both noise and heat loss. Our home now feels so much warmer. Friendly, efficient and professional – no hesitation in recommending to anyone” – clients Jonathan and Deborah Little. Please feel free to come in for a coffee at our new showroom Thermoglaz 81a Gasson Street, open Monday to Friday 8am-5pm and weekends by appointment.

Gasson Street Success Louise Neville of Accounting Solutions and her husband Barry of Thermoglaz held a combined party for clients, employees and friends to celebrate the opening of their new building. Like many of their clients, they’ve worked long and hard to build and consolidate both their businesses since the earthquake that rocked the Christchurch community on the 22nd of February 2011. Their new adjoining building on Gasson Street provides plenty of room for Barry’s new large showroom and manufacturing warehouses and Louise’s state of the art offices. The Gasson Street location creates a perfect environment for continued growth and success.

TAking The Plunge
Adding a swimming pool to a property is not a small undertaking. Landscape architect, Craig Wilson shares his expertise on how to seamlessly integrate a swimming pool into your outdoor design. Before embarking on designing a pool into your property it pays to ask yourself a few important questions to ensure your investment delivers the optimal result you dream of. The location of your pool is a key factor to consider. A pool can be a central element of your outdoor living space and works well when connected to the other main aspects of your outdoor living space. For a family or ‘party’ pool this works well, especially where the
action of the pool is easily seen and heard from the internal living spaces. If positioned well, the pool can become a water feature on an impressive scale and create visual impact from a formal dining or living space. In a larger property, the pool can also be a destination in its own right and be tucked well away from main patio spaces surrounded by generous lawn and garden areas. In Canterbury, you will most likely want your pool situated
where it will capture afternoon sun with a good degree of protection from the prevailing winds. The design of your pool area should include walls and plantings to protect you from the elements if your site is exposed with no existing shelter. By law, every pool must be fenced so make sure the style complements your design. Frameless glass fencing is a great way to reduce any sense of a ‘visual disconnect’ that other fencing options would otherwise
impose. Knowing what kind of atmosphere you want to create will guide you in the type of materials used for paving, choices of plantings and style of furniture. While many aim to recreate a resort-style feel where they can relax with a touch of luxury and contemporary sophistication, others prefer a more naturalistic approach where a native and informal plant palette dominates and the pool lines are soften by plantings and may even includes rocks around the edges.

However, Rowe’s work shows her confidence in painting as a medium within which she can present her thoughts on place and the environment in a modern art scene. she does this successfully with this conflation of beauty and exploitation. although the works evoke a sense of disquiet, they are beautiful and can easily grace the walls of a collector’s home. Rowes’ art practice explores the idea of place of identity. new Zealanders strongly identify with the landscape; its sublime mountains lakes and rivers a kind of bush myth in that, although we are mostly urban dwellers, many feel a strong association with the land. For some, the countryside is their source of income and survival; for others it is their playground, and others
their birthright. Landscape paintings are still the most popular genre and, by using this, Rowe accesses a wide audience for her work and her environmental concerns. even those she challenges over their land use are drawn to her work. By doing this she successfully creates a dialogue without creating offence. she draws our attention to that which she considers are overlooked places and to what it means when we use land to help form our sense of identity. Liz Rowes’ painting Paradise Dale could be anywhere, but painted in bright jewel-like colours the painting glows with the vibrancy of this small slice of nature. By creating this dialogue, Rowe draws the viewer's attention to the idea that by understanding place we will better appreciate and respect our environment. Rowe’s work was recently exhibited at the popular north canterbury event art in a Garden at Flaxmere, Hawarden.

It’s easy to figure out how the sun’s energy might be easily utilised with traditional water-filled solar panels on a hot day, but what about when the sun is not at its brightest? Vast improvements in solar technology mean energy can now be harnessed on dull winter days and even at night using the next generation of ‘Energie’ thermodynamic solar panels. Relying on the thermodynamic principles of evaporation, condensation and compression to generate heat, each panel contains a refrigerant liquid (instead of water), which causes a chemical reaction when warmed by the surrounding air – resulting in its evaporation to form a hot gas. The gas is then compressed and the resulting heat is transferred to water within the cylinder. Once the gas cools it becomes liquid again and returns to the panel for the process to begin again. Relying on the principles of differential temperature to gener=ate energy, this simple – but effective – solar hot water system has very few moving parts and a lightweight aluminium solar panel (measuring approximately 2000mm x 800mm and weighing only 8kg). It will continue working, even at night, so long as the temperature doesn’t drop below -10 degrees celcius. Going 'off the grid' just got smarter.
Getting the best out of the year! Coming to grips with a New Year and working on how to get the best out of both yourself and the world you live in is sometimes easier said than done. Good intentions, for all their merits, can fall flat without a plan and the appropriate actions. I work with large teams of sales consultants looking at their goals and I’ll often discuss the following words as a means of engaging them in their plans. These words both move and challenge me in equal measure and you might find the same. 1. Passion Where would any successful person be without the fire in their belly known as passion? If you don’t have it, all you have is a want or a desire at most and that won’t get you to the finish line. Know your passions, work to your strengths, push past the mundane and the petty to excel. Passion is an enormous propellant and once ignited has tremendous possibility.
2. A Work Ethic Work hard and smart in equal measure. This is not some random choice that you can discard at will. Hard work and smart, professional effort shows. Over the years I’ve witnessed some incredible work ethics and, strangely enough, these people are successful. There are no shortcuts, even if you have really deep pockets and an aversion to getting in the trenches. Nearly every occupation I know of requires work. Do it! 3. Focus When you’re trying hard and you’re passionate, if you don’t focus on exactly what’s needed you will struggle. Focus is so difficult to master in a world full of distractions. Technology is the high priestess of distraction and it takes discipline and practice to hold your focus in a business world. This is where specific strategies are needed to limit the attraction of going off task. Use them! If you’ve got no idea what to do, email or call me.

4. Push Push through rejection, criticism and the harsh, hard things that come along despite all your efforts. In doing this you develop resilience and that’s an essential if you expect to achieve or exceed your goals. Another term is ‘get over it’ (quickly): move forward, don’t hold grudges, and learn your lesson. That’s what pushing on is all about. So, as your year unfolds it’s worth thinking about whether any of this resonates. Plans need actions, goals need time frames. Get started, do something. Don’t just talk! You will be the better person for getting started. The Market Interest rates are likely to remain low and could even go lower; there are predictions that one of the biggest challenges facing investors is very low returns. Now, if never before, it could be the time to consider property as a method of wealth creation. I’ll rest my case before I get shot down by a broker!

Turbo boosT for Lexus
Ross Kidde drives the IS200t, the first turbocharged car from Lexus.
I’ve made no secret over the years of my affection for Lexus product, especially the baby of the range, the Is series. The reasons for my enthusiasm of the Is are its affordability and variation of product, it’s been available through the years with 2.5-litre, 3.5-litre V6 engines and an amazing 5-litre V8 and, what’s more, it has a rear-drive chassis which is absolutely divine in terms of handling and control. As you would expect from Lexus, the Is has been constantly developed to keep it appealing and up to scratch with technology. Toyota and Lexus are on push
towards new engine development – the Is is now the recipient of a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine option. As an aside, it is the first Lexus produced with a turbocharger. sadly, the new four-cylinder unit spells the end of the delightful 2.5-litre V6, but as disappointed as I am to see it go, the new turbo unit fits the mould of the car. The compact sports sedan hasn’t lost its performance edge, in fact it is more powerful, yet also more efficient. It has also been engineered for performance driving along with inbuilt safety systems that take

away a lot of the concern if you are belting along a bit quick. A g-force sensor varies gear selection under braking, during cornering and under acceleration. The Is200t is rated at 180kW and 350Nm, the engine sits longitudinally under the bonnet and drives through a fabulous eight-speed automatic gearbox. The combination is refined, not only is the engine whisper quiet – befitting the role of Lexus product – but it is constantly working in a power band where response is instantly available and shift patterns smooth and fluid. What’s more, there are
economy, normal and sport modes which the driver can select to suit driving styles, all at the touch of a console-mounted button. I used mostly normal mode during my time with the test car; it still provides instant accelerator response, while sport mode seeks more out of the driver, it is constantly wanting to use higher engine revolutions and demanding the driver change gears using the paddle-shifters. Eco mode is fine for when you are intent on saving fuel, but to me it dulls throttle response too much. Normal is the mode for me and it characterises the Is feel.

And that feel is something enhanced throughout the entire car. The Is is not big, that being the case it feels agile and nimble, and with the constant power delivery turbocharging provides it feels very much like a driver’s car. It is athletic and dynamic, much of that forced through the natural balance rearwheel-drive provides. If you also add in the substantial feel you receive through the steering, the Is200t imparts a desirable driving experience both at city speeds or when it’s unleashed on the open roads. I took the test car on the Gebbies Pass incline dropping down into Teddington and return. Its chassis and suspension feel is that of smooth control, yet it can be pushed and leaned hard into a corner knowing that grip through the sticky 18in Bridgestone rubber remains intact and tyre-to-road contact at the rear is kept well in place through the sophistication of the fully independent suspension. The balance between power and handling is perfect. You can almost get to the point where oversteer would be accessible but, of course, that won’t happen with the electronic safety systems. The
point is the Is200t can be pushed in a sporty manner and it responds beautifully. I had the test car during the week through the Christmas/ New Year break and I clocked up quite a few kilometres more than I would ordinarily do in an evaluation. The benefit being I was able get a greater knowledge of the fuel-usage statistics, taking into account I spent a lot of time in the car at city speeds and in traffic. even so, the trip computer was still listing a constant nine-litre per 100km (32mpg) combined cycle average. That correlates well with the 7.5l/100km (38mpg) figure Toyota claim. For the record, at highway speed the engine is turning over at just 1800rpm at 100km/h providing an instantaneous 5l/100km (56mpg) figure. The Is200t lands here in three variants. The entry-level model lists at $73,900, the test car was a Limited spec model and is priced at $86,400. All are incredibly well appointed with specifications befitting the Lexus brand. The Limited’s interior is plush and comfortable and it is loaded with kit, most too
comprehensive to allow detailing but to mention many of the electronic functions controlled through a mouse-like device and central screen. Lexus have sharpened the Is200t’s body style to keep it fresh into 2016. The new turbocharged model has done nothing to dampen my enthusiasm for the series, every time I was in the car I delighted with its feel and purpose. It’s so much the car for me, it’s certainly at the top of my wish list.

Dear No One Opening Colours both rich and subtle which appeared to have danced off a painter's palette, were re-formed into garments so beautiful as to dazzle the heart. It could have been a fantasy but no, it was real and the proof stands on Holmwood road, at the corner with Rossall street. On a sun-caressed summer afternoon, Dear No One opened, bidding guests to enter with generosity abundantly proffered both in the endless river of catering and the couture on display. Ethereal creations wove a spell of elegance in which tone and texture possess the senses and pay homage to the figure.

TrenDS Black Sheer StockingS Think 1980s, think barely there, and think 10 denier. Sheer black stockings are back. Diana Von Furstenberg, who paired 15-denier polka-dot stockings with dinner jackets on the runway says, “There is nothing more seductive than the tease of sheer tights with French dots and a sky-high heel.” The tights will darken the leg at the slender-most point making this an extremely flattering look.

there is no excuse for looking shabby this Valentine's day, as Working Style has welcomed back a familiar face to its senior ranks with the appointment of Karl Clausen as its new creative director. Just relax Can you imagine doing absolutely nothing but relaxing for 80 minutes? This lifestyle anomaly is what Kate Preece experienced recently, at a new place in Hanmer Springs called Artisan Spa.
After driving through bountiful Waipara and bustling Culverden, and arriving in Hanmer Springs, the concrete jungle is a distant memory. Walk into The Village Shopping Centre, however, and you could be forgiven for thinking you had stumbled upon a metropolitan oasis. The new, open-air complex boasts Artisan Spa – my relaxation destination – as well as designer clothing boutiques, a homewares store, a café/bakery and the promise of more to come. Hanmer Springs has ‘had some work done’. Artisan Spa opened its doors on December 7, and while it is owned by the Hurunui District Council and sister to the spa that adjoins the popular hot pools, it has its own identity, and completely new staff. Lorena was my beautician, and she was soon guiding me to one of the treatment rooms for my Artisan Escape Package. A combination of massage, facial and mini manicure, the package would suit a beauty-spa newbie, providing a taster of what’s on offer. It started with a 30-minute back and shoulders massage, during which Lorena was quick to notice my knot-lined shoulders, commenting that my left-hand side was particularly worse for wear. “This will hurt,” warned the Brazilian beautician, “But it will be better.” And she was right. Those knots were shown no mercy (as
requested), and I began feeling noticeably lighter. The Refresher Facial followed, with a sublime scalp and neck massage taking place while the mask was left to set. Creams used were developed in the region, derived from the “therapeutic waters” of Hanmer Springs, kiwifruit and aloe vera. In fact, all of the products used at Artisan are natural, with ranges catering to different purposes, from pampering through to addressing particular skin concerns. The cherry on top of this package is the mini manicure. After 60 horizontal minutes, it was time to sit up and take notice of the array of nail polish colours waiting to be chosen. When Lorena highlighted a summer shade of orange that would make my hands look “thinner”, how could I say no? With hair dishevelled by the luxurious scalp massage, and skin stripped bare, sitting in the open reception area for the manicure could leave some people feeling a little exposed. And, if you have too much fun out there, your laughter will filter through to the treatment rooms. However, come prepared to zone out for an hour, and with a can of dry shampoo and BB cream in your bag, and you will step out into the alpine air feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the world once more.

know your face Shape It's a new year and maybe time for a change. Before embarking on the latest trend, identify your face shape and your best features – you need this information to achieve balance with a new look. Which of the five face shapes do you have? a round/square/triangle face shape you will need some height with a side sweeping fringe, or some length at least 10cm under your chin level, and soft lines. avoid horizontal fringes and solid lines. Think Jennifer Lopez, or Jennifer Lawrence with her
gorgeous textured bleachedblonde style below her jawline. If your face shape is an oblong/ angular, you need width or body and fullness. You will suit the new season's textured bobs, so bring out your rollers and curl irons for a more glamorous look. The heavier fringe is also for you. Get to know what your face shape is and what suits you best. ThE ArT of Letting go We all have unhelpful thoughts and beliefs that hold us back from achieving our full potential. Health and wellness coach, Annabelle Matson identifies four key factors that stand in your way to a better, brighter you this year. AiMing for Perfection The only way to be healthy, lose weight and maintain positive food choices is to enjoy the food you love in moderation. When we create a set of rules for ourselves about what we are allowed to eat, we feel compelled to cheat on these rules because they cage us in and make us feel trapped,
hungry and deprived. When we don’t impose unrealistic eating rules on ourselves, we don’t feel the urge to break the rules and we are far less likely to binge out on food. Essentially, you can eat whatever you want, but what you will find is that you begin to make healthier choices. It’s a far more empowering place to operate from and inspires motivation and commitment for a healthy lifestyle that’s sustainable. eliMinAte the guilt fActor Aim to make mindful, positive food choices at every meal. It’s that simple. If you eat something outside of your own food goals or you miss a workout, remind yourself it’s just one day and aim to make tomorrow different.

There’s no sense in beating yourself up or feeling guilty. one “bad” day or meal doesn’t need to ruin your intention of being healthy. Get back on track with a nutritious breakfast the next morning and recommit to eating and living well for the rest of the week. Weight WAtching Start focusing on the health of your body rather than just your weight. When your diet becomes
all about real food, you are likely to experience things like clearer skin, balanced hormones, an abundance of energy, improved digestion, stronger immunity and many other positive benefits. Weight loss just becomes a great side effect to your amazing health. You want to partner with your body and get it back on side so you can count on it for decades to come. You can’t do that when you are damaging it with endless diets
or processed food. So, eat for health, nurture your body and you are likely to find it will respond exactly how you want it to. cAlorie counting Ditch the obsession with counting calories and instead focus on food in the least processed state as possible. When walking down the supermarket aisle, ask yourself the following: 1)Where did this food or its ingredients come from? 2) how much has it been
processed and handled? and 3) What has been added to it? The ingredient label should be short and all ingredients should be recognisable, but ideally food that is best for us doesn’t have labels or packets at all. Nature has provided all that we need to create nourishing, delicious meals without ever needing processed ingredients. Make your diet all about real food and watch how much your body loves you back!

WhitforD’S reSTaUranT anD bar WORDS victoria tait PHOTOGRAPHY centUri chan Tucked away at 43 hargood Street is The Woolston Club. The main club building houses five bars and a variety of function spaces. They operate 18 gaming machines, full service Tab, Woolston bowls pavilion, ron Mitchell boxing gym and the Community and Leisure Facility (all Sports Pavilion). in addition to this, The Club is also home to Cashmere Technical Football Club and Lancaster Park Woolston Cricket Club. as well as, of course, the newly renovated Whitford’s restaurant, bar and Café. on entering Whitford’s restaurant i immediately notice the club atmosphere, there is a warmth here and everyone seems to know each other. as an outsider i don’t feel unwelcome at all, however. i am greeted with a welcoming smile and shown to my table in the recently refurbished outdoor area that has views over the cricket green. Unlike other club restaurants, this establishment offers a fully serviced experience, moving away from buffetstyle dining. it is clear to see the staff here really do enjoy their work and it’s a delight to be served by them. With a comprehensive menu offering entrées, salads, platters, mains, roast, pizzas and desserts, i am definitely spoilt for choice. To start, i decide on the Lamb and halloumi Kebabs served on toasted Turkish bread with
a fresh side salad. i must say, this is not what i was expecting at a club restaurant. The Turkish bread is beautifully crisp on the outside and tastes great with the succulent lamb and halloumi. To complement this, i order a glass of the russian Jack pinot noir from the extensive wine list. Do be aware: as a non-club member you cannot order an alcoholic beverage. if you would like one with your meal, signing up for membership can be done on arrival. With such a diverse menu i’m torn for my main between the famous chef's daily special roast, a DiY pizza or the angus fillet. i choose the fillet and am not disappointed. i am recommended to have the gravy on the side, which is delicious. For dessert, i'm drawn to the mouth-watering black plum and white chocolate steam pudding served with pouring cream and the scrummy apricot and almond frangipane tart, but i opt for the cheesecake of the day, a white chocolate and blueberry baked cheesecake served with ice cream and cream. i leave Whitford’s restaurant and bar feeling very contented and slightly heavier than i arrived. What is very satisfying to see is that they have created the right balance of value for money without compromising on taste and service.

Red Zone Revival WORDS VICTORIA TAIT phOtOgRaphy CENTURI CHAN
A 10-minute drive from the central city, in the heart of the New Brighton red zone, is the Urban Corner Café. Replacing ‘The Old Bower Tavern’ building the Urban Corner Café site is made up of 18 shipping containers. To the left of the complex is the New Bower Tavern and in separate space to the right you'll find this lovely café. On entering the café I am taken by surprise. Firstly, at the space available, which boasts a café, fully licensed restaurant, gift shop, a large deck capturing the best of the sun through the day and a very generous playground area. The exterior gives very little clues as to what’s really on offer. The playground captures my attention, with a large grass area, swings, and slides. Owner-operator Katrina Hargen explains to me that “there are so few cafés and restaurants
in Christchurch that are childfriendly. The aim here is that you can have a glass of wine and catch up with friends and family knowing that your children are in a safe and entertaining environment. We have largest kids' outdoor play area in Christchurch.” As a mother of young children I could not agree more that these spaces are lacking in Christchurch. “We have designed the area based on what we’ve seen in Australia,” Katrina tells me, “The Aussies really know how to create a family environment, which makes a dining experience pleasurable. We also have the largest beer garden, which is separate from the kids area.” On Sundays, the Urban Corner Café has live music from 3pm, and in summer the bands play outside on the deck. The last Sunday of the month there is a farmyard day for
children. This includes pony rides and a portable animal farm with llamas, calves, goats, sheep, and rabbits. There are events held on a regular basis – including this Valentine's Day – function hire and catering available, and you can dine in or take away. There are early week specials: Mondays ‘two for one gourmet burgers’; and Tuesday ‘two for one gourmet pizza’. As well as the ‘weekend wine down’ which is an antipasto platter with a 750ml Lindauer. The menu offers a selection of scrumptious cabinet food, plus a full menu. “We have a very New Zealand-style menu, our gourmet burgers are extremely popular,” says Katrina. As for dinner, there are so many options, such as creamy chicken pasta, beef stroganoff a local favourite with many returning happy customers. Or if

you’re looking for a good classic Kiwi dish there is the bangers and mash. All the Kiwi classics are available on the dessert menu including sticky date pudding and crème brûlée. Children have their own menu, which includes market fresh fish and steak and other healthy options. There are gluten-free and vegetarian options as well. The Urban Corner Café offers a family friendly environment, where there really is something for everyone. I am very impressed that what appears from the outside to be a container café is in effect a very diverse space, offering so much in an area that has lost so many of its facilities. Still locally owned and operated for 25 years by the Hargen family, the Urban Corner Café shows the resilience and determination of this family to bring life back into the red zone.

Hasta luego! You don’t need to travel far to experience a slice of authentic Havana. Sample a taste of Cuba’s vibrant street food, music, and atmosphere right here in downtown Christchurch. WORDS MAJKA KAISER PHOTOGRAPHY CENTURI CHAN At the end of a hard day’s work, take some welcome respite from the dazzling summer sun and relax under the shade of the covered courtyard at The Cuban. Revitalise and relax amidst the colourful expositions of colour in the considered décor that packs a punch with authentic Cuban relics and larger-than-life painted wall murals. Satiate your appetite with flavoursome food for the soul. A tantalising tapas menu from 3pm every day offers a range of mouth-watering delicacies to share. Choose from spicy jalapeno pork crackle, unique chocolate popcorn, jerk chicken wings in a sweet and mellow banana salsa, cheesy spinach empanadas (pastry parcels) or a plate of albondigas (meatballs) with avocado smash and ancho crema to whet your appetite. For something a little more
substantial you can’t go past a roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese and pickle Sandwich Cubano, pulled goat Tostada or The Cuban’s famous Cuban sausage. If you have a soft spot for rum, then you’ll be in seventh heaven with The Cuban’s impressive collection of over 70 rums from which to choose. Mean girls HAve NO sTYLe! StyleTV host Andrea Allen provides the first of her regular columns on style, life and fashion.
“There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.” – Madeleine Albright
There’s a stereotype that women in the business world are the b-word. The truth is, most highachieving women struggle and fight to succeed with tenacity, a lot of the time vying with men for roles. Being the woman at the top of your game makes you unique – you’re special. This, in turn, can add an element of paranoia to your everyday world that makes you believe other women are out to get you. Women put so much pressure on themselves to perform at the peak of their game in everything they do. That we must be the perfect wife, an incredible mother, and all while stepping out in ontrend fashion. Have you been in the situation where you are blind-sided by a highly charged woman who is commanding an audience with her trail of perfection in all matters of
her world? Do not be fooled – because she will still be the same woman that will forget the plate that was needed for a school shared lunch or returned home to the crockpot not turned on. Yes, we are all mere mortal and unintentionally make mistakes from time to time. Though, in saying that, we should all treat ourselves as a goddess once in a while. Do Mean Girls situations exist? Of course they do. Now, with social media, we are barraged with judgments of us made on different platforms, spreading rumours and just plain bullying. Logically, we understand these persons are dealing with their own issues, but it is still hurtful in the same instance. There will always be people who try to put others down, but their reasons for behaving this way can often be more deep-seeded than simply being dismissed as a “chick
thing”. My advice is to surround yourself with a small group of like-minded woman who are there for you, through the good and the bad. They tell it like it is, but equally build you up with their love and care. With this support, how can you not succeed? We all have our qualities and strengths in so many different forms, so why not applaud this and congratulate with kind words of praise. My challenge to you this February: when you spot a fab look, style or action, react. Give an unsolicited compliment; you will have then effortlessly given your fellow woman a glowing boost to her day. The odds are she will do the same for another deserving dame. And that is style! Have a fabulous February! Love Andrea
