GRAND DESIGNS: Craig Bradford says his new pub in Leeston should be up and running in about six months. PHOTO: TOM DOUDNEY

New pub coming soon to Leeston By Tom Doudney IT’S BEEN a long time between drinks for Leeston residents, but in six months, the wait should finally be over. That’s when the town’s new pub is expected to be completed, after work began on Monday. The town has been without a pub since the Leeston Hotel (shown below) was demolished in 2011, due to earthquake damage. The $3.2 million development, will be built on the same site, on the corner of High and Market Sts. Called The Crate and Barrel, it has been modelled on the style of an old English pub. It will include a motel, backpackers, restaurant, TAB and pokie machines, and liquor store. It will be owned by Craig Bradford, who also co-owns the Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln.

Mr Bradford said the pub was named after the second most popular hotel in London. “I Googled that, and cheated a wee bit and pinched the name.” Mr Bradford said that since the previous hotel was demolished, he had regularly had Leeston residents visiting the Famous Grouse and telling him how good it would be to have a pub closer to home again. “There is definitely a need for a pub out there. There are five rugby clubs surrounding Leeston, and there is no funding from pokie machines out there, so they struggle, obviously. The community itself has got no real meeting place like we have here in Lincoln.” Getting to the building stage had taken longer than he originally expected for various reasons, including changes to local building rules. “It has been three and a half years of getting there, so we’re ready to go.”
