CALL FOR ACTION: Friends of the Edmonds Factory Garden spokesman John Hoskin said the group wants an alcohol ban put in the garden. PHOTO: TOM DOUDNEY

MESSY: Rubbish found in the Edmonds Factory Garden about two weeks ago.

Alcohol ban wanted

BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Young families are being intimidated by people boozing in the Edmonds Factory Garden. Friends of Edmonds Factory Garden, a group that maintains the garden, said there had been less young families visiting because of people drinking alcohol.

INSIDE:

Spokesman John Hoskin said the group wanted an alcohol ban to thwart the inebriated groups of people who not only intimidated people but left a mess. The Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board has asked the city council to look into the possibility of an alcohol ban. Mr Hoskin said the issue had been going on for years, but

problems had increased lately. About two weeks ago, cans and bottles had been littered in and around the pond and the volunteers had to clean up the mess, he said. Young families used to visit the garden regularly, however, they had dropped off, he said. The unwanted visitors are of all ages, and more often come

during the week, he said. “It’s not the most desirable atmosphere for children. The iconic garden was commissioned by Thomas Edmonds, the manufacturer of the well-known baking powder brand, to go around the factory which was built in 1923. It is not the first trouble the garden has had this year.

Its iconic ‘Sure to Rise’ gate, which was worth $1900, was stolen on March 12. Woolston business Hammer and Tongs offered to make a new gate for free and Industrial Painters Ltd powder painted it. It was installed on Wednesday. •New gate for Edmonds Factory Garden, p5

Comedian up for award BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Growing up David Correos would do anything to make the older kids laugh. He is no different now after being named one of five nominees who will go head to head for next year’s Billy T Award. The 22-year-old grew up in Woolston, and went to St Thomas of Canterbury College before moving to Auckland late last year. The Billy T Award, named after the late Billy T James, recognises and supports young up-and-coming comedians, and runs every year. Previous winners include Ewen Gilmour, Dai Henwood, Paul Ego and Ben Hurley to name a few. Mr Correos said he vividly remembered getting the call to tell him he was a nominee. He was listening to Ed Sheeran to calm his nerves when it came. “It was a very good moment.” In spite of moving to Auckland in November, he has not quite adjusted to big city life. “I’m not a fully fledged JAFA yet,” he said.

FUNNY-MAN: David Correos is up for the 2016 Billy T Award.

“There’s a lot more hills in Auckland, I’ve got a constant burn in my calves. My diet is more suited for a flat road lifestyle.” He will do anything to make people laugh, which has included chugging two litres of milk in less than two minutes, and

CYCLISTS INJURED ON HILLS Two people were taken to hospital with moderate injuries after falling off their bicycles in separate incidents on the Port Hills last week. A woman in her 30s fell off her bike at Victoria Park at 5.47pm on Wednesday. A man in his 50s was injured when he fell off his bicycle on the Summit Rd at 6.44pm on Thursday. St John was called to both accidents. POT SPARKS FIRE CALL Addington firefighters were called to a city council flat on Sparks Rd, Somerfield, last week after reports of smoke coming out of a window. The call came at about 5.20pm on Tuesday. Fire communications shift manager Andrew Norris said a pot had been left on the stove. He said there were no flames, but the flat had filled with smoke and needed to be ventilated. He did not know if anyone was in the flat at the time. Meanwhile, a backyard bonfire in Phillipstown sparked a fire service call out last Tuesday at about 8pm. Firefighters from Christchurch Central were called to the Ryan St property and extinguished the fire with a garden hose. MAN INJURED IN FALL A man, aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital last week after falling over in St Martins. St John was called to the New World on Wilsons Rd at about 5pm on Wednesday. The man had moderate injuries.

Look past the uniform when meeting someone new Bridget Rutherford – Southern View reporter Oh you’re from Christchurch? Where did you go to school? The question we’ve all been asked and the question we all cringe at as we wait for a reaction. Ooohhhh you went to that school, what was that like? Christchurch seems to have a culture where everyone is interested in it. Friends of mine who aren’t from here tell me it’s a Christchurch thing. They say it never happens in Invercargill, New Plymouth or Dunedin (unless a sports star hailed from your school, I’ve been reminded many times that Brendon McCullum and Ben Smith went to Kings High School).

SOAP BOX University is an interesting time for it, that question can change how people are seen. I’ve witnessed former Christ’s College and St Bede’s boys getting on like a house on fire until they find out they were meant to be nemesis’ at school - even though no one actually knew why they were being so hostile to one another. People ask me what school I went to, and I answer tentatively. The answer tends to give the impression I was a ‘rich snob’ who boarded at a private school

in Merivale. I see it as my parents working hard to be able to send me to boarding school where there were more opportunities than the local country school. People often say lower decile public schools get a bad rap, with a bad stereotype - private schools are no different. If I had dollar from every time I had the snobby label put on me when I donned the St Margaret’s College uniform I would be a wealthy woman. Public schooled people would feel exactly the same way. Christchurch is a small place, and people like to make connections. The good news is that as time goes by, people tend to ask the question less and less. Don’t be so quick to judge folks, after all, what ‘rich snob’ would spend her school holidays covered in blood, mud and poo helping out with tailing?

Gary Knight, of Hoon Hay: The extent of bush shelter and bus finder vandalism also graffiti attacks on them is a sad reflection on those within our society, who through lack of respect and antisocial demeanours, choose random destruction on these necessary conveniences. Defacement of bus finders and shattered glass panels and vast graffiti placement on bus shelters being regularly attended to by city council, Connexionz and Fulton Hogan bears testimony to the continued extent of this city wide damage. Weekly visits on these, also maintenance, cleaning and repair by street furniture and advertising business Adshel heralds the integrity of this non-tax payer funded entity. Within this context it is essential that passive surveillance, graffiti-proof paint and mesh kits to minimise glass breakage be in consideration for future bus shelters. While those responsible for wilful damage of these are mainly unidentifiable, a different scenario is possible concerning graffiti. Hopefully the combined city council/ police tagging register

being reliant on noted styles can in some of these cases identify those responsible for this blight on our urban landscape, and accordingly prosecute and action ensuing costs for reparation.

•The city council is looking into putting an alcohol ban in the Edmonds Factory Garden because people boozing and leaving their mess behind has become a recurring problem. Is there anywhere else where you think an alcohol ban needs to be put in place? Street lines painted in wrong place after botch up BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

A misinterpretation of a map resulted in city council contractors painting no stopping lines in the wrong place on a Cashmere street. The city council was meant to paint yellow no stopping lines at the entrance of Cashmere View Retirement Village on Rose St to improve visibility. But the lines were accidentally painted on Rose St outside

Cashmere View St. Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board member Helene Mautner said both locations had similar names and were on the same street. She got in contact with a city council traffic engineer to have it corrected. It was a similar situation to earlier this year, when the city council was installing handrails next to the steps in Purau Reserve, and put them in the

wrong place, she said. “Luckily they are quickly resolved.” City council transport and city streets acting unit manager Paul Burden said the markings would be corrected “as soon as possible”. “The entrance to the village is wide and the position on the map was misinterpreted which resulted in the lines being painted in the wrong location.” It would cost the city council

$50 to install new no stopping lines in the correct location, he said. The lines that have been painted at the Rose and Cashmere View Sts intersection will remain. “Traffic law states that motorists are not permitted to park within six metres from an intersection for safety reasons. Having the broken yellow no parking lines will ensure that people are not able to do this.”

NEW RESOURCE CENTRE The Rowley Resource Centre will be fully operating out of its new premises at 89 Rowley Ave on November 2. Builders, plumbers and electricians are now completing the work at the centre’s new home, and the city council has issued resource consent for it to operate in the new building. A human chain helped shift most of the centre’s furniture and belongings from its former home at 59 Rowley Ave last month. HAVE A SAY ON NO STOPPING Addington residents are being asked to have their say on a proposal to install no stopping restrictions on part of York Tong Pl. The restrictions would make it easier for rubbish trucks to get access to the end of the street, which is currently causing safety issues. The restrictions would be installed on the bend at the end of the street. Residents can have their say on the city council website. Consultation closes on October 30. DECISION DUE ON FIR TREE The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board will decide whether to remove a douglas fir tree from outside 9 Halswell Junction Rd at its meeting tomorrow. City council staff have recommended the board not remove the tree. If the board decides to keep it, the city council would place a survey on the tree and visit it annually to re-assess its condition.

our PEOPLE

Scoring goals on the netball court Adrian Rennie officially started as deputy principal at St Mark’s School last week. Bridget Rutherford chats to him about education, netball and playing the Silver Ferns. So how has the first week gone? Wonderfully well. I’ve been teaching at the school for a while, so I only just started this week but started the role informally about three weeks ago. So when did you start teaching at St Mark’s? A term and a half ago. I started as a classroom teacher. I teach the year 5 class, and it’s absolutely wonderful. In the new role I teach four days a week and I have one day a week as deputy principal. What brought you to St Mark’s? I’m really interested in the type of school, it’s an Anglican integrated school. I heard that the students and community were really beautiful people and the kids most certainly are. It’s a great school community, and the parents are very supportive and help out with everything. That’s just the kind of school I wanted to teach at. It was a bit of a coincidence I came here. A position

opened up in the year 5 class, and the teacher already teaching the class knew I was keen to move, so she told me about the job. So how many schools have you taught at in total? Oaklands, Charwell Forks, back to Oaklands, then off to North New Brighton, then Northcote, then Cobham. So how does St Mark’s stack up? It’s the best school I’ve ever taught at. There are elements and parts of the school that I really enjoy. Why did you want to get into teaching? I was most definitely inspired to be one by one of my own teachers when I was aged 8 and 9 at Redwood School. He was a brilliant guy, he’s actually over at St Michael’s School now. He is a very good netball referee, and I’ve played a lot of netball myself. Do you hope to inspire people in the same way?

I already have heard of people becoming high school teachers and preschool teachers that used to be in my class. It’s a lovely legacy. What sort of teaching style do you have? I think what I try to bring to kids learning experiences are elements of high engagement and fun with high levels of accuracy and quality and to make it meaningful for them, meaningful learning is best. To make learning really fun - that’s the trick. And you mentioned you have played a lot of netball, can you tell me about that? I have played in the Canterbury and New Zealand men’s teams for 23 years. I retired in 2012 from both teams, but I still play for the Canterbury men’s masters team which started in early 90s. How did you get into playing? I played some indoor netball and then went to the Canterbury trials. Something about the game and the skills really suited me. I used to play rugby, but I really liked the physical challenge and skill set in netball. I’m actually playing the Silver Ferns at the Tactix training facility at Jellie Park.

and in the classroom Really? How did that come about? The Canterbury men’s organisation has gathered a team for them to play. We’re there to help them. So the coach might say we need a full team and we want to play this style of match. So it is obviously in preparation for the Constellation Cup. What style of play do they want to play against? Just a really physical, fast style, with a little bit of aerial play too. What position do you play? I used to be goal-defence but I’ve semi retired to goal-keep now. I still play goal-defence in the master’s team. We’re over 40, most of us. We went to nationals last month and came forth in the country. Not too many men play netball, why do you think that is? It’s very much a minority sport, much the same as women’s rugby. Most guys think that it is a women’s sport until they play it. What else do you do in your spare time? I’m an author and I speak at conferences. The thing I do is Thinking Skills, so I’ve had four books published which are for teachers. I lecture at conferences

and help out at other schools. I also play a bit of guitar and things like that. And do you have family here in Christchurch? I’ve only got my dad and sister. I’ve got a 20-year-old daughter, Morgan, she is working in a café in Leeston and she manages it when the owners are away. She’s actually a monster netball player too. She played for St Nicks A this year. She’s got the same style of playing as me as well. Over the 25 years you have been teaching, have you seen a lot of change in teaching? Very much so, but for me the biggest changes have come from what the students bring to school and how they are. That’s one of the things I love about St Mark’s. It is almost like going back in time where manners and respect were really big. It’s still really valued and so strong here. And finally, what were you most likely to get a detention for at school? (Laughs) I was actually pretty good at school, I can’t even remember having a detention. But it would probably be for not doing my homework.

FULL FLIGHT: Adrian Rennie played netball for Canterbury and New Zealand for 23 years.

Christmas has come early for Annabel’s Educare Somerfield preschoolers. The Somerfield St pre-school decided to fill shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is a charity which involves packing a shoe box with gifts to then be sent to children in poverty around the world. It allows children to get presents when they would not normally. Pre-schoolers and their families managed to get together gifts to fill seven shoe boxes to send away as part of the Samaritan’s Purse International Relief initiative. The boxes were packed for preschool aged children, so they had lots of teddy bears, stickers, crayons, toy cars, and some helpful bits and pieces like toothbrushes, flannels and socks. Annabel’s teacher Jaisha Trebilcock said the generosity of the children and families was “amazing”. The initiative was tied in with he pre-school’s Christmas party. Children and their families enjoyed wrapping presents, making cards, listening to music and dancing as well as a special Christmas afternoon tea. “We wanted the day to be about encouraging our children to be generous, but made sure there was something special for them too,” Ms Trebilcock said.

A Cashmere High School student teacher has been recognised as having a bright future as an educator. Sione Areli was presented with an inaugural Kupe Scholarship last week, which recognises 30 of the country’s outstanding Māori and Pasifika teaching students. The Ministry of Education scholarship will cover Mr Areli’s course fees, study allowances and will provide professional mentoring and assistance to find a job following his graduation. Education Minister Hekia Parata presented the scholarships at a ceremony in Wellington last week, as well as a taonga keepsake for a permanent recognition of the achievement. Ms Parata said she was delighted to have the opportunity to present the scholarships. “These scholars all have strong track records of academic success and will help raise the status of the teaching profession among young Māori and Pasifika and provide strong role mod-

This is a prestigious scholarship that will assist these teaching students to further their teaching journey. The Canterbury team managed to secure six semi-final placings, coming fifth out of 12 teams. St Bede’s College student Seb Johnson won a silver medal in the Longboarding event which boosted the team’s ratings. The contest had good waves and weather just one week after the dramatic floods that hit the Gisborne region. The Canterbury surfers trained all though the depths of winter with coaches Nick Black and Alan Temoananui in the build up to the event. The team was supported by the Southern Trust, NZ Community Trust, The Mainland Foundation and Seventhwave wetsuits.

Hall fire follows scooter theft MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Somebody stole a motor scooter in Domain Tce in Spreydon last Thursday. They probably pushed it along the road until they got to the Coronation Hall. This is a hall with plenty of history in the area. It’s still

utilised by a softball club and appears to be quite a wee social hub. They won’t be using it for a while. That’s because our motor-cycle thief set the machine on fire and left it leaning against the Coronation Hall. The walls are wooden weatherboard. They caught on

fire which then spread into the roof space. The hall is quite badly damaged and will take months to repair. The question is Why? Why would the offender do this? If you can supply any logical reason then you’re cleverer than I am. Fires starting from discarded cigarettes are much less

prevalent than many people believe. But at this time of year they do occur here because of the Canterbury nor’wester. This week we saw two examples, one on the Main South Rd, Hornby, and the second on Russley Rd where cigarettes thrown from a car window have set fire to the bark or foliage on a central

traffic island. If you’re a driving smoker please, please use the car ashtray. Ducklings are still about, still getting stuck and still being saved by firefighters. Once in Woodham Rd and once in Epsom Rd at Sockburn this week. It’s not our job. But someone has to do it. Well done both fire crews.

New diabetes exercise group starts in Christchurch

T

ype 2 diabetes is becoming a major health issue for New Zealand, with obesity recognised as one of its most preventable causes. According to a Diabetes NZ spokeswoman, “While there is no silver bullet, we do know we can prevent obesity through lifestyle and exercise.” For their part, the team at Physical Sense Gym & Physio also recognise that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the two key factors underpinning successful weight loss and have developed a programme specially designed for diabetes clients. It is proving popular with people across a wide age range (20 to 70), including many who are overweight or severely obese. The programme comprises a circuit that allows the clients to do the exercises at their own pace, without any pressure to keep up, combined with advice from the community diabetes team who support them through the necessary changes to their food habits. “The advantage for these clients is that we are a normal public gym, so our diabetes clients are mixing with people who don’t have health conditions,” team member Ietje van Stolk says. “And by coming to the gym, our diabetes clients are getting out of the house and are meeting other people including people with the same issues and weight problems as they have, and being physically active is very motivating. They encourage each other and there is plenty of fun and humour between themselves and with the instructors, who are there to lean on and help everyone reach their goals.” Medical research shows participation in regular exercise gets the heart rate up, helps strengthen muscles, improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, Ietje points out. It also positively affects lipids and blood pressure, reduces the risk of cardiovascular events and improves quality of life. Physical Sense Gym & Physio has had many positive comments

Physical Sense Gym & Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham from clients about the programme. One, who goes six times a week, says he loves having somewhere to go and hates the days he is not going to the gym. Another says, “It’s the only thing I have for me, and I have improved my eating habits.” Others have found walking easier and have increased energy and fitness. To encourage those on limited income, the first four sessions are free, and if clients have WINZ support the programme usually remains free, Ietje says. Attending the gym is as easy as a bus ride which stops right at the front door. There is also plenty of parking available should you choose to drive. Physical Sense Gym & Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. Phone 377 2577.

oQ10 reduces all causes of mortality by 50 per cent. Researchers were amazed with the benefits of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well. In a recent multi-country double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found that patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. Also, patients on the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events, but from

all causes. According to lead study author professor Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality, and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems, but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure. CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age. Keeping our levels up of this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer. For more info, call Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy on 388 5757. Miracle weight loss fruit An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia Cambogia from India and other parts of Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health. In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. The Dr Oz Show has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss.

E

ven without exercise and diet, changes many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of stroke and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits. It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid. To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in New Zealand and also a major cause of loss of quality of life. By leaving a bequest to the Christchurch Heart Institute, we can work to reduce this number through valuable research into the prediction, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

Lifestyle Village

ifestyle Village in Geraldine is now centred on stage 5, with our first residents in this stage moving in late November. Concurrently, with this is the construction of our new McKenzie Leisure Centre, which will cater for many lifestyle activities such as an indoor heated swimming pool and spa pool, gymnasium, art and craft area, library, lounge (with pool table, etc), hairdressing room and other key amenities. Out on the north side, the bowling green (plus croquet) is being formed to be followed by petanque, mini-golf and a children’s playground. The official opening of the Village and Leisure Centre is scheduled for Saturday, November 28, with the next day being a Public Open Day between 1pm and 4pm. Visitors are most welcome to come and inspect the Village and Leisure Centre on that Sunday. There will be light refreshments and music in the Lounge and some villas will be open for inspection. There are now 32 occupied villas with 49 residents. As the number of residents has increased, so has the social aspect of village living. The spacious and well-insulated villas are a mixture of stand-alone and duplex styles with four basic plans to choose from. They all have at least two bedrooms and internal access garaging. There is a village bus, men’s workshop, allotments and parking for caravans, boats and campervans on-site. We will eventually build up to 120 villas, 10 apartments and 12 assisted-care apartments, the latter being

attached to McKenzie HealthCare next door. McKenzie HealthCare is an aged care facility with rest home, hospital, palliative care and dementia services. For more information, please give David Connolly a call on 0800 84 55 24 or visit www.mlv.co.nz.

Diabetes - Are you a sitter?

W

e sit in cafés, offices, the car, in front of TV and computers. Yet we know that inactivity is one of the high risk factors for diabetes. More than 270,000 New Zealanders have diagnosed diabetes and many have it without knowing. Poorly managed diabetes is a major cause of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, blindness and foot and leg amputations. It is estimated that about a quarter of people with diabetes may not meet the basic requirements of foot care to avoid the risk of future amputation. Keeping circulation boosted in feet and legs is essential to help avoid foot complications – numbness, tingling, loss of feeling, abrasions and ulcers, which do not heal and can lead to amputation. So keep moving while you sit – in front of TV, in the office, the car. The Aircycle circulation booster enables this – helping maintain good blood flow to feet and legs. It is helpful for anyone who sits long periods as well as those with diabetes and arthritis. Aircycles are available from Diabetes Christchurch, pharmacies, online at www.aircycle.co.nz or by phoning 04 569 5013.

Located in the heart of Thorrington down exclusive Majestic Lane this stylish family home is definitely a must see. A large family kitchen opens onto a roomy dining/family room which in turn leads into the spacious formal lounge. A private courtyard opening from the living room provides that all important outdoor space for when summer returns. The entrance is grand in size and will surely impress those who call. A double bedroom is located downstairs as is a generously sized powder room. Upstairs the feeling of space continues with wide landings leading onto the bedrooms. The master suite is bigger than many living rooms with its own walk in robe and ensuite. The second bedroom is also exceedingly generous - more a triple sized bedroom than a double in fact! Bedroom three is a double and there is a study or box room also at this level. Both the main bathroom and ensuite have baths as well as separate showers and are certainly not small. For those whom a garage is important this will not disappoint. All this situated on an easy care section and in zone for the highly sought after Thorrington Primary and Cashmere High. My clients are realistic and want to be sold now so call asap to view - this property may well sell very quickly! OPEN HOMES Sunday 12.30-1pm
