73-year-old bashing victim lucky to be alive By Kyle Knowles THE ELDERLY man who was savagely beaten in New Brighton in July has spoken about his ordeal and the injuries he has been left with. Ken Chappell, 73, has been left blind in one eye, unable to drive and struggling to walk after the attack. He was attacked outside the Subway New Brighton at about 2am July 15 in Brighton Mall. The brutal attack left him in a medically-induced coma for about two weeks with serious head injuries and broken bones. Resham Toa Blake-Faatafa, 19, admitted to the attack on Mr Chappell and pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm in the district court in August. And, yesterday he pleaded guilty to a second charge of intentional causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Chappell during the same incident – and dancing around him. Blake-Faatafa told police he was angry after drinking with friends and “took out his anger” on Mr Chappell when he saw him walking in the mall. He followed the victim, taunted him and then cornered him in a shop doorway. He punched the man in the
the pool table. He is unsure if that was from the night of the attack or earlier. Mr Chappell told The Star he was shocked at the extent of his injuries when he woke from the coma. “At the look of my injuries I think they (hospital staff) probably saved my life. I had no idea of the injuries until I looked in the mirror. I kept getting more and more information as I improved and it was all a bit of a shock really. Mr Chappell, a former psychiatric nurse, said he had to learn how to walk again.

ON SEPTEMBER 11 The Star published an article which stated in the first paragraph that former mayoral candidate Gordon Freeman has been ordered to pay more than $22,000 for underpaying staff. The second paragraph stated that G.L Freeman Holdings Ltd, which owned the Redwood Hotel and Sequoia 88 until earlier this year must pay more than $7000 in outstanding wages, holiday and sick pay to four former employees, plus a $15,000 penalty. The first paragraph was incorrect. The Employment Relations Authority ruled that G. L Freeman Holdings Ltd pay the money. Mr Freeman is the director of the company. The Star apologises for the error and confusion caused.
“I’m really well but I’m injured in my left arm and left leg and my left eye is blind but I’m dealing with all that and my walking has got much better. “The progress I made after beginning to heal has been pretty impressive. I’ve seemed to impress all the people I know. It’s nice to keep everybody happy.” Mr Chappell is now unable to drive and said it was a hard adjustment. He is able to walk into town from his house in central Dunedin but needs a taxi home as it is uphill.

Electric car sharing scheme explored THE CITY council is looking at setting up a car sharing scheme in Christchurch, using electric vehicles. The fleet could be shared with Environment Canterbury and several Government departments, as well as large businesses. The options will be discussed at a city council committee meeting tomorrow. If it decides to go ahead with the plan, a fleet could be set up within a year.
