• Erratic driving between Lincoln and Tai Tapu BY TOM DOUDNEY A 10-year-old Lincoln boy could barely see over the steering wheel as he drove his father’s unwarranted, unregistered car erratically along a 100km/h stretch of Lincoln Tai Tapu Rd. When police caught up with the boy’s 44-year-old father, who had been in the passenger seat at the time, he said he had been teaching his son to drive. Police were called by other drivers who saw the boy driving and regularly crossing the centre line on Saturday between 4-5pm. Sergeant Franco Lovrich said the man’s actions were “absolutely foolish” and had put himself, the boy and other road users at risk of a serious crash. “There is a time and place for teaching children to drive but a

public road, and at that age, is not it,” he said. “Witnesses said he could barely see over the steering wheel.” Police used the reported registration number of the old-model Toyota Corolla to locate the man’s address and arrived there at the same time as he and the boy were returning. The man was driving at this stage but admitted letting his son get behind the wheel. He was fined $400 for assisting an unlicensed person to drive and $300 for the car’s warrant and registration being out of date. Sergeant Lovrich said police had spoken sternly to the man who said he was sorry. The incident is one of many cases of underage drivers being caught behind the wheel, both in New Zealand and overseas. • Turn to page 2

It will be most interesting to note which councillors move and second the motion to establish the loan for more corporate welfare to be provided by the ratepayer. This district council continues to increase rates well in excess of the Consumer Price Index, but can always find $8

million to loan to private concerns. The district council mantra was ‘user pays’, but now appears to be ‘let the ratepayer eat cake!’ – Terance Hancock, Lincoln District council chief executive David Ward responds: At June 30, 2015, council has loans with two organisations that are private concerns totalling $2.6 million. Brave Harry wins battle with cancer BY TOM DOUDNEY

A boy who lost his mother to cancer when he was just 22-monthsold has won his own battle against the disease. However, Harry Boaz, who will be three in November, will have to be tested regularly for the rest of his life to make sure it doesn’t return. Heather Boaz (right) died of breast cancer in September last year, aged 37. The Rolleston mother had neglected her own health to focus on her unborn baby, Harry, after a scan revealed a tumour at the base of his spine when she was four months pregnant. Harry underwent surgery to remove a tumour the size of his head, just 24 hours after his birth. Mrs Boaz was on her deathbed when Harry’s father, Andrew Boaz, received news that their son’s cancer had returned. He made the difficult decision not to tell his wife before she died. Now, after a battle which has spanned the best part of a year, test results show Harry is cancer-free. Mr Boaz said the result was huge

An initiative to provide social housing in Leeston took a step forward on Saturday with the first sod being turned for the Abbeyfield Ellesmere project. The $2.4 million-plus complex is being built on land adjacent to Leeston Park. The building site was cleansed by Ngai Tahu representatives from Rununga Ngati Moki and Ellesmere ministers blessed the site. An Ellesmere building consortium has been awarded the tender for the project, with site work and building due to begin within the next six weeks. The complex is expected to be open by early 2016.

During his treatment, which included chemotherapy, Harry had been low on energy, needed a lot of rest and suffered from bouts of vomiting. Now, he was healthy and active again. “He’s loving it,” Mr Boaz said. “He’s full of energy and it makes you realise how crook he was. His hair is growing back [after the

chemotherapy] and he is going to have his first hair cut soon.” After all the family had been through, the diagnosis was “a bit of light at the end of the tunnel” and Mr Boaz was looking forward to doing more of the normal things his son liked to do, such as playing on the trampoline and going to the park. He said Mrs Boaz would have been hugely pleased about the

good news which had justified her sacrifice. “It’s just a relief for everybody. It has been a long journey.” Because of the risk of Harry’s cancer returning, he would still need to have blood tests every month for the next year and an MRI scan every six months. As he grew older, if he remained cancerfree the testing would become less frequent.

The 2016 World Buskers Festival will see performers entertaining crowds in Rolleston next year. Buskers will perform in several venues outside of Christchurch as part of a ‘buskers roadshow.’ Timaru, Ashburton, Kaiapoi and Lyttelton are also expected to get performances.

Quake anniversary a day of quiet remembrance at Homebush BY TOM DOUDNEY Five years after the historic Homebush homestead was destroyed by the September 4, 2010, earthquake, owner Louise Deans says she has struggled to put the event behind her. “I don’t think you ever can. I think it’s a life-changing event that doesn’t stop happening.” Mrs Deans said the “traumatic” day and its aftermath had caused the family, including herself, a great amount of stress. She, her late husband Jim, her daughter and her daughter’s partner were asleep in the house when the earthquake struck, leaving it in ruins. Miraculously, they all escaped from the building without injury.

“Because it was dark, we really had no idea of the extent of the damage until we came round when it was light. Once we saw it, we realised just how lucky we had been.” She expected the anniversary would be a day of quiet remembrance for her. “I think that it’s like when somebody dies and you remember the anniversary of that death. It’s a relief when [the day] is over.” Mrs Deans was very happy with how the new house, designed by architect Ian Athfield, had turned out. She did not regret the decision not to rebuild the old homestead. “The old house was very big. It would have cost a huge amount of money to do and would have taken far longer and it also wasn’t a safe

way to build,” she said. “The advice we got was that with time and money you can do anything but in the end it would be a new house anyway. So we thought if it was going to be a new house, let’s be bold and build something really exciting that will survive the next few hundred years.” A number of other buildings on the farm had been restored and it was hoped work could begin soon on the last one. However, Mrs Deans wasn’t sure how long that work would take to complete. “These are really old buildings. They are all 1870s and it’s not easy to keep them protected because they are category one heritage buildings, so they have to be done really carefully.”

Broken crockery and original songs will feature heavily when the community at the centre of the September 2010 earthquake marks the five years since that fateful day. In many ways the earthquake put Greendale on the map for people outside the district, with images of crooked tree lines, fences and roads caused by the ruptured fault line splashed across the media. The school will hold an open day from noon to 2.30pm and its 34 children will sing two songs about the earthquake composed specially for the event by Rowan Taylor, a musician who lives in the Leeston area. The children will also be putting together a mosaic wall, along with West Melton artist Sarah-Alice Miles, using some crockery which was broken when the earthquake struck. Afterwards, there will be a gathering at the local Greendale Hall at 4pm, where the children will perform again followed by a toast. This will be followed by a shared barbecue tea. Greendale School principal Carey-Anne Hamilton said the school had jumped at the chance to perform the songs. “We had recently taken part in the Anzac parade and I think they really enjoyed the children’s singing, so that was why they asked us

The fifth anniversary has coincided with the recent formation of the Greendale Community Trust, which will provide financial assistance to maintain and restore community facilities. The trust’s first project will be the replacement of the Greendale Church roof. Future projects earmarked for the trust include the restoration of the T W Adams Arboretum as well as increased maintenance work on the Greendale Hall and the cricket pavilion at the Greendale Domain. Slow progress at church The chairman of a community trust set up to help Hororata recover from the September 2010 earthquake has decried “the politics” surrounding the rebuild of community buildings. Hororata Community Trust chairman Richard Lang said there were still a number of community buildings damaged in the earthquake that the community wished to see rebuilt. “There is a level of frustration in the community surrounding the politics that are delaying these projects moving forward,” Mr Lang (above) said. The trust is working with the Hororata Parish vestry and the Anglican Church Property Trust to broker a way forward to repair the St John’s stone church which was built about 1910. The repair is expected to cost millions. “Progress has been slow surrounding the St John’s Church rebuild. However, the important fact to focus on right now is that discussions are happening and all parties want to see the church restored. It is not visible progress but it is progress.”

Mr Lang said the community had hoped that the earthquake-damaged Hororata Hall could be replaced with a more modern building. However, indications were that the district council was more likely to have it repaired as it was, due to the expense. District council earthquake recovery manager Douglas Marshall said the hall repairs were expected to cost $74,000. Mr Lang said that while the community waited for progress, the trust had looked for other ways of supporting locals. The Hororata Highland Games was a highlight of what it had achieved in the past five years. “The trust formed with the vision to provide the resources to promote, foster and develop Hororata and its wider community. I believe we are fulfilling this vi-

sion but in a different way to what we originally thought,” Mr Lang said. “The trust has taken on an umbrella role in the community, supporting volunteer groups to achieve their objectives by providing resource, guidance on strategy, promotion and structure.” It had also invested in signage around the district, donated to three local primary schools for swimming pool upgrades, donated daffodil bulbs to schools to engage children in beautifying their townships and created a website to create an online presence for community groups and businesses. The trust is about to launch a heritage project which it has been working on with a community group for the last six months. The first stage of the project will see a visitors’ guide to the heritage of Hororata and beyond brochure published.

Repairs mostly completed

While much of Christchurch still resembles a construction zone, the majority of earthquake repairs to Selwyn’s infrastructure have been completed. However, while repairs to roads and wastewater systems were carried out within months of the September 2010 earthquake, damage to community facilities such as halls, community centres and cemeteries has taken longer to fix. All earthquake damaged roads were repaired by June 2011 with the exception of the Sabys Rd bridge which was on the boundary of

Christchurch. Repairs to the bridge were completed in February 2013. Repair work to quake damaged water and waste water systems was completed by the end of 2010 and further damage to these systems following the February 2011 earthquake was not significant. The September 2010 earthquake hit many of the district’s cemeteries hard, although most headstone repairs have now been completed. The remaining cemeteries where work is still to be completed and will be finished by

2016 are Bishops Corner, Killinchy, Ellesmere Public, South Malvern, Kirwee, Kimberley, Waddington, Kowai Pass and Prebbleton cemeteries. Following the earthquakes, repair work or complete replacements were necessary for 69 community centres, halls, toilet blocks or swimming pools. Earthquake recovery manager Douglas Marshall said most of these repairs or replacements had now been completed, with plans for other rebuilds such as to Dunsandel Community Centre now under way.

Houses in line for awards

Zone changes for Darfield HS The loss of West Melton is likely to be the biggest change to Darfield High School’s enrolment zone when Rolleston College opens in 2017. Darfield High School principal James Morris said the school had between 100 and 120 students coming from West Melton in any given year. The school has about 800 students. The proposed new enrolment zone would see the boundary shifted back from Chattertons Rd and West Melton Rd to Calders Rd

and Sandy Knolls Rd. The change would mean that from 2017, West Melton residents would not have the automatic right to enrolment at Darfield, although they could still apply for out-of-zone enrolment. Siblings of students enrolled in 2016 would continue to be able to enrol as in zone students. Mr Morris said it was hard to tell what impact the new enrolment zone would have on the school’s roll considering that the population in Darfield and Kirwee were increasing at the same time.

He believed the roll would be similar in coming years to its current level. Mr Morris said only about a third of students in West Melton currently attended Darfield High School, with the rest attending other private or state schools, often in Christchurch. There will be a meeting at the West Melton Hall on September 17, at 7.30pm, to discuss the proposed new enrolment zone. Scouts rev up fundraising for jamboree

SCRUBBING UP WELL: Cameron Pritchard and Matthew Hattrill were part of a Rolleston Scouts group washing cars in the Rolleston New World car park. They weren’t just doing good deeds – the group was fundraising to send a contingent of 36 Scouts and 10 leaders to a jamboree in Renwick, near Blenheim, in December next year. They raised $1600 with the car wash, bringing their overall total so far to $3000. The cost to get each Scout to the jamboree is $1200 and there will be extra costs for equipment.

Refs wanted for tournament BY TOM DOUDNEY Two weeks out from the start of a children’s football tournament featuring up to 36 teams, there is one important thing missing – referees. The Prebbleton Soccer Club is hosting the football component of the Koru Games which will take place from September 15-17. The games are staged at a variety of Selwyn venues and feature teams of year 7 and 8 pupils from South Island schools. As well as football, they all feature rugby sevens, basketball, lawn bowls, netball, swimming, table tennis, touch and volleyball. Prebbleton Soccer Club president Shannon Gilmore said they were still well short of the number of referees they needed for the football games, which will be staged at Prebbleton Reserve over the three days of the tournament. They only had five referees so far, and were looking for about 10 more. “Refereeing is not something to be scared of, it’s something to be embraced and it’s actually quite enjoyable,” Mr Gilmore said. “People instantly think ‘oh I can’t referee’ but they really don’t need to know much. The rules are simple and easy to learn. All they need to be able to do is to be able to talk to a group of people. If they can do that they can be a referee.” Games could be be played on up to 18 pitches at a time.

Mr Gilmore said pitches would be small and game times short, so it would not be very physically demanding. People would not need to be available for the whole tournament, anyone who could just do a morning or afternoon would still be able to contribute. He believed it might suit someone retired, on leave from work or anyone with an interest in football who was available. Mr Gilmore said he had asked Mainland Football if it could provide some referees but so far there had been no indication that it could, which was “disappointing.” Mainland Football referee development officer Wayne Stapley said he had put the message out to referees asking if any were available for the event but was not yet sure if any would be. It was difficult to provide referees during the week because people

had work or study commitments, he said. Selwyn Sports Trust executive officer Michael Wilson said finding enough referees was a “bit of a struggle” across all sports but football and netball were the sports in greatest need. Prebbleton is hosting the football component for the second year in a row after the inaugural Koru Games was held last year. •Anyone who is interested in volunteering as a football referee can phone Mr Gilmore on 027 579 8811. Uni claim title Lincoln University have claimed the Christchurch Premier Netball title after a tight 44-43 win over Kereru in the final at Pioneer Stadium. Coach Bev Gordon said her side probably laid the foundations for the win in the second quarter, which they finished with a six goal lead, but admitted to watching the clock as the gap closed dramatically to just one goal. She attributed the win to having a stronger squad than she has had in previous years and praised the efforts of the first year players and captain Liz Hayman, who was “fantastic and led by example.” She said her players were hungrier than in the last two years when they had lost in the final. “They had a bit more fire in their bellies,” she said, and described it as a complete team effort. The B side, however, lost by one goal to their Kereru counterparts in the Premier B final, going down by 4039.

Today, the Selwyn Times concludes its weekly series, Soldiers of Selwyn, marking the centenary of World War 1. After being discharged on August 22, he returned to the Mounted Rifles and embarked for the Dardenelles from Alexandria on November 27, 1918. Hampton was again admitted to hospital in Chanak, at the entrance to the Sea of Marmara, with influenza on December 9 and moved to Constantinople where he was declared dangerously ill on Christmas day. He died on December 28, aged 24, and was buried the next day at the Chanak Consular cemetery not far from Gallipoli. In New Zealand, Hampton is remembered on the Ellesmere County War Memorial’s Leeston plaque and the Southbridge School Roll of Honour. In 1919, his brother Dudley named his new born second son Frederick Selwyn. Private George Lawrence Crossen George Lawrence Crossen was born at Brookside on November 15, 1893, to Thomas and Ellen Crossen. He was working as a farm labourer in Kirwee before enlisting on October 18, 1915. He had previous military experience having served with 13th Regiment. Crossen was assigned to 9th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company, and embarked for Suez on January 8, 1916. As he was suffering from measles, after disembarking he was sent to the New Zealand Isolation camp at Zeitoun, arriving February 9, 1916. On February 25 he was admitted to No 4 Auxiliary Hospital at Heliopolis and was not discharged to duty until March 9. Crossen joined the 1st Battalion at Ismailia on March 18 and shortly after this he embarked for France. A notation on his record shows that he was attached to the mayor for fire duties at Amentiers between August 1 and August 19. During fighting at the Somme, on September 27, Crossen suffered a severe wound to his elbow which led to him being evacuated to England. He was admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley on October 3 and later transferred to the No 1 New Zealand General Hospital at Brockenhurst on January 2, 1917. On January 30, Crossen was

classed as unfit and then embarked for New Zealand on March 18. A medical board was held in Christchurch on May 29 and the findings were that a piece of shrapnel had destroyed his right elbow. In the words of the medical report “the lower end of the humerus was pulverised.” His hand was limp, meaning that the right arm was useless. The disability was permanent. He was sent to Coronation Hospital in Christchurch and during this time was exposed to Phthisis (tuberculosis). It was this that killed him on October 13, 1919, aged 26. Crossen is buried in Lincoln Cemetery and remembered on the Rolleston Roll of Honour. Lance Corporal Arthur Leslie Cooper Arthur Leslie Cooper was born in Christchurch on May 3, 1891, to Arthur and Clara Jane Cooper. He was working as a farm labourer at Springston before enlisting on May 29, 1915. Cooper was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 2nd Battalion, and embarked for Egypt on October 9. During the voyage he was fined five days’ pay for smoking and carrying his rifle slung while on sentry duty. After arrival he joined the 3rd Rifle Brigade and proceeded to Ismailia on January 17, 1916. He was admitted to hospital briefly at Ismailia in February. Cooper embarked for France from Alexandria on April 6, 1916. While in action on July 22 he suffered a wound to his scalp and was admitted to No 8 Stationary Hospital for treatment. He was back at the depot at Etaples a week later and rejoined his unit on August 7. On September 15 he received a shell wound to his side but, after treatment, rejoined his unit on September 20. On May 23, 1917, Cooper was sent to hospital sick. Taken up by the field ambulance with a headache by the time he got to No 13 Field Hospital it was called ‘debility’ and then at the time he boarded the hospital ship St Patrick it was diagnosed as ‘trench fever’. This is a disease borne by body lice that was first recognised in the trenches of World War 1, when it is estimated to have affected more than a million people. Cooper was admitted to No 1 General Hospital at Brockenhurst on July 2 and then the Convalescent Hospital at Hornchurch on September 4. Further investigation showed that he had chronic pulmonary tuberculosis and the

medical board placed him on the unfit roll on November 14. He embarked for New Zealand on December 24 and was discharged on July 16, 1918, as no longer physically fit for service. Cooper died at the Cashmere Sanatorium, Christchurch, on June 28, 1920. He is buried in Sydenham Cemetery, Christchurch, and remembered on the Springston and Ashburton war memorials. Private Albert Valentine Buchly Albert Valentine Buchly was born at Halswell, Christchurch, on June 28, 1894, to Albert and Emma Buchly. He was working on the family farm at Brookside before enlisting on October 5, 1916. He had military experience with the 13th Regiment with which he was still serving. Buchly was assigned to 22nd Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, C Company. After training at Trentham, where he had a 15 day bout of influenza and pleurisy, he embarked for England on February 16, 1917. After arriving in France, he joined the 1st Battalion Canterbury Infantry, in the field on June 19, 1917. Buchly was admitted sick to hospital just before Christmas on December 22, 1917, with diarrhoea and debility. It was not until January 20, 1918, that he was well enough again to march in to camp at Abeele, west of Ypres. There he was assigned to the Entrenching Battalion and joined them in the field on March 27. However, on April 13, he was once again admitted to hospital, this time with scabies, before rejoining the battalion on April 17. On September 6, Buchly suffered a gunshot wound to his hand and neck. He was hospitalised in England for several months before being sent back in New Zealand, arriving on January 29, 1919. Buchly was sent to Cashmere Hospital for treatment. His final discharge was on April 28, 1920. He died on August 25, 1924. It was felt that his death was due to war service and his name was added to the Ellesmere County War Memorial’s Irwell plaque. When time is of the essence Want to compost but just don’t have the time? Have the time, but haven’t a clue where to start? Welcome to carefree composting, the fast and furious, utterly fail-proof art of turning almost everything you normally throw out into a rich pile of garden goodness. Diana Noonan makes it easy for gardeners on the go. But I don’t have space for a compost pile! Yes you do! A 90 sq cm plot of flat(ish) outdoor surface is all that’s required. Any surface will do, from grass to concrete. A sunny spot is great, but shade will be fine, too. Do I actually have to, like, build something? If you want to, why not? If you don’t, no problem. If you’re building a structure, make it no smaller

once living? If the answer is ‘yes’, you can almost guarantee it’s okay to put it in the compost. So, dig out your newspapers, coffee grinds, teabags, cardboard cartons, wrecked cotton jeans, the contents of the vacuum cleaner bag, food scraps, the rattan wastepaper basket with the hole in the bottom, the takeaway coffee cup, even the hair you clipped from the poodle.

When purchasing seeds, make sure you read the packets carefully, and ensure that you are looking at the right zone. Seeds and plants respond differently in the different climates, and Canterbury is on the cooler side of the temperature range. If you are looking to put plants in, check with your local garden centre about what varieties are ready at the time you are looking to plant. Remember there are still plenty of opportunities for late frosts, you don’t want all your hard work to go to waste! If you haven’t planned out your garden, there is still time to get on to it!

But I don’t have time to chop everything up! Who does! And what does it matter, anyway? The smaller you make your bits of living material, the faster they’ll decompose. Even if you leave everything whole, it’ll get there eventually – even the cotton jeans. I have to admit, shaking out the newspapers a bit does stop them forming a wad, but wads of paper will also break down (and worms love them). Don’t fuss over the cellophane tape on the cartons, either. When you fork out your lovely compost in a few months’ time, the inorganic stuff (including those dreaded plastic stickers on apples) will be easy to pull out, and can be biffed into a waiting rubbish sack. Put into a bucket anything that’s only partly decomposed, and pop it into the next compost pile you construct.

try carefree composting I thought you had to layer everything? It helps to have layers of green stuff, such as grass clippings, food scraps, the outer leaves of cabbages and fresh weeds, between layers of brown stuff, like dead leaves and flowers, animal manure, seaweed, straw and sawdust, but there is no wrong way. However, it is important to sprinkle a handful of lime (you get it from a garden centre) into the pile every now and then. And always start your pile on a 3-4cm high base of sticks (the sticks should be about as thick as your finger) and/ or twiggy shrub clippings. This open layer helps air get into the pile and stops the compost pile becoming stinky. What’s with the worms? Everything! Worms are like living waste disposers. They chomp through the contents of your compost pile (cardboard and all) and feed their plant-nourishing excrement back into the compost. Red worms and stripy tiger worms are the ones you want, not the big fatties that live in the turfs under the lawn. Most people find that composting worms mysteriously make

themselves at home in the compost pile after a week or so. If this doesn’t happen, beg some “starter worms” from a friend’s compost. They breed fast so just a handful will do. In the worst-case scenario, go online and purchase a packet. Truly – they’ll be delivered by post. So, how does my compost pile heat up? Tiny lifeforms living in the compost are the force behind the heat. To help them get to work, feed your pile with fresh animal manure and green waste (especially grass clippings). The more the better, so beg some from your neighbours as well. Compressing helps with heat, too. Each time you add a layer or two of waste to the pile, get the kids to jump on it so everything gets well pressed down. If you haven’t had any rain for a while, add a couple of buckets of water to the pile. And don’t forget to top the stack with a cosy covering of old carpet, sacks, recycled cardboard or a tarpaulin to lock in the warmth. What’s with this ‘turning the pile’? Turning the pile is only for

The rest of us turn nothing but a blind eye. ‘Turning the pile’ means that, after a few months, you pull the pile apart and put the stuff from the outer edges into the middle and vice versa and it’s so everything gets a turn to heat up, and nasty weeds and bugs get cooked into oblivion. If you don’t get time to turn the pile, it’s not the end of the world. You might get weed seeds in your garden, but it’s nothing mulch won’t put paid to. You may also get a few useful seeds such as pumpkin, zucchini and rocket sprouting. As for the nasties, it’s a risk, but so is everything in gardening. And, in my book, risky compost is better than no compost at all.

3. Won’t my neighbours complain about flies round the pile? Not if you cover your food scraps with some soil, grass clippings or sawdust, and pass a fresh lettuce over the fence every now and then. 4. How do I get my compost pile to heat past warm? Unless you’re making the pile your life’s work, don’t expect miracles. Check its dimensions (it should be no less than a cube with sides of 90cm). To promote heat, add some extra green material and animal manure, cross your fingers, and if the temperature is still not outstanding, don’t panic. Decomposition will still work on cool. It’ll just take a little longer.

This spent broad bean plant may not be finely shredded, but its nitrogen-encrusted roots have much to offer the carefree composter. 3. Some weeds are worth sorting even if you’re short on time. If you spot invasive weeds in your garden tidy-up, don’t put them in the compost. Bin them instead. 4. Mixing fresh grass clippings and animal manure into other organic waste will give your compost pile the best chance of heating up. 5. Know your enemy. Even carefree composters need to evict any vegetables showing signs of dreaded fungus club root. 6. Forget about chopping up the garden waste, just toss it on as-is. 7. Brimming over with rich garden waste, this rough-and-ready compost pile will still produce the goods.

Six cylinders for Subaru Legacy ON THE back of one of the warmest summers I can remember came the harsh reality of a South Island winter, and certainly one of the harshest I’ve experienced. Temperatures well below zero have been common, but it was the consistency that surprised me and, of course, when we have rain during the evening and then a frost, we get the black ice and formidable driving conditions. Twice I’ve been summoned by my daughter asking for transport after ice made accessing her Celica difficult. Both times I’ve had the good fortune to be driving a fourwheel-drive vehicle or, as in the latest case, as Subaru label it, Symmetrical All Wheel Drive. The car was the new Legacy which lands here just a year or so after the new Outback. Why I’m mentioning the latter is because the two are now a lot more closely aligned, not so much in ride height, but if you want a wagon out of the Subaru stable you need to buy an Outback, today’s Legacy is sedan only. But, there are other factors which tie the two together, the new Legacy also arrives with the choice of two engine options – a 2.5-litre four cylinder petrol engine and a 3.6-litre six-cylinder petrol, although the Outback’s four-pot diesel isn’t available (yet) in the Legacy.

SPECIFICATIONS

The test car was the big six, and in each of the vehicles I’ve experienced this engine I’ve always commented on its power and sophistication. Subaru are no strangers to flat-six engines, they first had a six-potter in 1987 and it has been constantly refined and developed to the point where it has universal application. Today it is rated with power outputs of 191kW and 350Nm, both figures realised quite close in the rev band at 5600rpm and 4400rpm which promotes an energetic nature, but with the pairing of a continuously variable automatic transmission (Lineartronic) it doesn’t need to work overly hard to produce respectable performance figures. According to my stopwatch the Legacy will scorch to 100km/h in 8sec and will make a lunge through a highway overtake in 4.1sec. Subaru has also been on a development programme whereby fuel usage across all of its engines has been under scrutiny so that they are all now more frugal in an age where fickle fuel prices are a major car buying criteria.

The Legacy expounds on the ingredients which have forged a solid customer base, especially here in the south. This year the Canterbury Country Colts are being coached by Alex Robertson and Mervyn Todd whilst the managers are Scott Mitchell and Simon Wright. This is the first year this management group have all worked together and are working really hard to make this a successful programme for the team. We have had some tough decisions so far with 10 players pulling out of the original squad of 28 players due to injuries and work commitments. This has made continuity with trainings and game plans tough with having to revisit a lot of ground. The Country coaches Mark Treweek and Wayne Gugich have worked hard on ensuring they have selected a team that will represent Country Rugby with pride. The team will again be captained by veteran prop Mike Rowe with Shannon Donald, who was unfortunately concussed in the Ellesmere final and will miss the early games, vice captain. It has a number of experienced players and some new to country rugby. The season started with a narrow 10-7 loss to Southland Country at Te Anau on the 15th August, this will be followed by a friendly game against Nelson Bays at Murchison on the 22nd August and then they play Metro for the Craw Shield at Rugby Park on the 29th August. This is always a keenly contested fixture and after their very creditable performance last year the players are excited about the opportunity to pit their skills against their Metro counterparts. From Friday until October 1, open daily except Mondays, 10am-4pm Two new Selwyn Gallery exhibitions will feature paintings by Michael Ballard and the woodcarving of Tony Ardern. Mr Ardern’s work is hand carved and some pieces are so realistic, it is hard to believe they began life as part of an old bridge beam on the West Coast. He specialises in creating original pieces from reclaimed and recycled timber. The title of his exhibition is Not What It Should Be. Past experience in colour mixing while a trainee designer at a carpet manufacturer has given Mr Ballard some skill in blending colours and tones, which he uses to great effect in his work. He began acrylic painting seven years ago and has developed his own somewhat surreal style, influenced by his travels and observations of nature’s palette. Planting Natives not only encourages the native birds, but also makes for easy care gardening, and you don’t need to be a purist. Mix natives with hostas, foxgloves, rhododendrons, camellias to name a few.

Now here is a plant that needs very little care, they resist most insects and diseases. Once established regular watering is not necessary (unless there is a prolonged dry summer), they rarely need fertiliser and pruning is not necessary.
