Another Woolston bank to close

BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD AND FRASER WALKER-PEARCE Woolston’s only two banks are shutting up shop and moving out of the area.

Last month New Zealand Post revealed its plan to close the Woolston PostShop and Kiwibank.

It said it would expand postal and banking services in Ferrymead instead.

As a result, those wanting to use banking services had to travel to Ferrymead or Eastgate, or turn to the Woolston ANZ branch.

And now Southern View can reveal ANZ is also closing its Woolston branch.

An ANZ spokesman said it would move to a brand new site at Ferrymead early next year. “Ferrymead is a fast-growing area, and relocating the branch will make it closer and more accessible

The median hump at the Colombo St entrance to the Beckenham Shops car park, next to Coffee Culture, is going to be removed on September 7-8. The Colombo St entrance will be closed during this time, but access to the car park from Tennyson St will be maintained. The hump was put in with the aim to reduce the speed of vehicles exiting the car park onto Colombo St. But since its installation a number of people had tripped on the median and complained to the property owner.

Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton said she was appalled.

“It’s a community where many people walk, it’s a lovely village centre, and Ferrymead has very little residential population,” she said.

“It’s really sad that this would happen to the Woolston community.”

She said Ferrymead was not going to be accessible for many residents, and a lot did in person banking.

Road closed

Simeon St, Spreydon, will be closed between Coronation St and Sydney Pl for three weeks starting today, while Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team works to repair the earthquake damaged road. Part of Hillmorton St will also be closed for three weeks from September 7 while work is carried out to repair a wastewater pipe.

Cat Rescue

It was just another day on the job for Woolston firefighters on Wednesday. A fire crew was called to a residential address in Heathcote Valley at about 5.45pm to rescue a cat which had got itself stuck on a roof.

Consultation closing

Members of the public have until tomorrow to have their say on the removal of a douglas fir tree outside 9 Halswell Junction Rd. Residents were concerned the tree was shading and leaving leaves in nearby properties. The RiccartonWigram Community Board asked the city council for public consultation to be carried out. If it gets the go ahead, the tree will be removed in October.

House of the Year finalists Homes from Halswell, Hoon Hay and Hillsborough are among a selection of 17 of the city’s finest in the finals Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition.

They are among 21 homes from the Canterbury area picked in the final 100 from around the country in the competition.

Up for grabs are awards for new home and renovation of the year in various price ranges.

Three homes in Halswell are up for awards.

Two will battle it out for the Carters New Home $1m - $2m category, while the other is up for the PlaceMakers New Home $400,000 - $500,000 category.

A house in Hoon Hay is also up for the PlaceMakers New Home $400,000 - $500,000 category and renovations on a Hillsborough home have earned it a spot in the Future-Proof Building Renovation Award over $500,000 category.

The Canterbury homes were

selected from the 38 which won gold awards in the regional competition last month.

Registered Master Builders chief executive David Kelly said there was a great deal of diversity among this year’s national finalists.

“There’s an English style country home with grand stature, a 1970s beachfront bach that’s been given a new lease of life, and homes made of the most sustainable materials available. There are homes that exude wow factor, and others whose excellence is only visible to the trained eye.”

As well as the supreme awards, finalists can also win one of the 12 national category awards, as well as separate awards for lifestyle categories such as best kitchen, best bathroom and best outdoor space.

There is also an award for the most sustainable home.

The results will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland on November 14.

Arsonist has blind hatred ‘like Isis’

Some people would have seen a recent news story where Isis had blown up an irreplaceable archaeological site, presumably just because they knew the world would be horrified.

In a small way, the deliberate destruction of the New Brighton Cricket Club by arson last Saturday morning might have been motivated by the same twisted reasoning.

Mementoes of the past were de-

stroyed that can never be replaced.

The offenders might be thinking they have hit out at people they envy and despise.

Just like Isis however, nothing they have done will improve their own situation.

Their blind hatred won’t go away and their destructiveness will remain mindless and meaningless.

It makes me very sad for them.

I’ve been in a couple of homes recently where cheery log burners have been warming the house.

I’m envious of them but am quite

aware of the reason that stops me installing one in my home.

If you are one of the few who can still operate a fireplace you do need to remember that they get hot.

Hot enough to fill the house with smoke.

Greenfield Street in Mairehau had this situation last Friday.

In this case a hearth broom was involved. Some cleaning, some airing and a new broom are definitely now on the agenda in that house.

Elderly face long trips for specialist care

BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD The elderly will have to navigate road works and detours to get specialist care when it moves from The Princess Margaret Hospital to Burwood next year.

Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board deputy chairwoman Karolin Potter said Burwood is difficult to access from the south.

Since the earthquakes the traffic had been terrible, and there were a number of detours, she said.

“That traffic, I’ve been lost several times.

That trip is complicated.”

There are currently 1039 road works taking place across the city.

Elderly care services will move from the Cashmere Rd hospital, mid-way through next year to Burwood Health Campus, which is undergoing a $200m revamp.

“This is going to be a real worry for older people,” Ms Potter said.

It would also affect staff working there, as she knew a lot who lived in the south, and also Rolleston, she said.

Community board chairman Paul McMahon said the relocation of services would make it more difficult for elderly people in the area to get there.

“There is a large elderly population in this area.”

But Canterbury District Health Board chief executive David Meates said the district health board did not envisage any major issues with the move.

“The new facilities at Burwood will pro-

vide a modern environment designed to support the very best patient care.”

Some of the features of the new health facilities for older people include more single rooms and en suites, purpose built patient areas for ongoing rehabilitation, hoists in some of the rooms, new outpatient clinics and radiology facilities, he said.

“Our hospitals are for people from throughout Canterbury. There will be ample parking and signage to assist people visiting the Burwood site.”

He said a number of services would remain at The Princess Margaret Hospital for some time.

City councillor Phil Clearwater said the city council and Environment Canterbury were working with the CDHB to ensure public transport would make the Burwood Health Campus accessible.

“What we do know from population statistics in Christchurch is that a large proportion of elderly people live in the south and in the west of the city.”

He said the CDHB was looking at putting a bus shelter at Burwood Hospital.

City councillor Tim Scandrett said the community board was trying to get more information on the effect it would have.

He said there may be more elderly people in the ward, but they might not be use those services.

“It’s really what these services were providing and what the elderly really need in our area.”

No decisions had been made on what to do with the site, said Mr Meates.

DELAYS: A decision on whether to swap this Sikh Society land with part of Buchan Playground has been put on hold.

Further delay over land swap decision

BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD A final decision on the Buchan Playground land swap has suffered yet another delay.

City councillors decided last week to let city council staff work with the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board to have further discussions around the use of the playground.

Those discussions will involve the Sikh society, Sydenham Quarter and local business owners.

In April, the city council said it wanted to swap 1230 sq m of park land for a 602 sq m piece of neighbouring Sikh society land as part of a park remodel.

The society would have paid for the extra land and planned to build a new place of worship on it to

replace its temple which was demolished after the earthquakes.

But earlier this month the infrastructure, transport and environment committee decided not to recommend the swap to full council.

Business owners spoke before the committee saying green space in the city is precious and should not be sold.

Memorabilia sought for centre’s 40th anniversary The Huntsbury Community Centre’s 40th anniversary is coming up in October – and it is looking for photos and recollections to mark the occasion.

It is one of only a handful of community-owned centres in the city and the celebrations will take place on October 17.

Plans are under way for a reflection and celebration of what occurs every week

at the centre.

The centre is looking for recollections, memories or photographs from the last 40 years.

If you have any anecdotes or photos, the community centre would love to hear from you.

The celebrations will start in the early afternoon with a chance for past and present school pupils to drop by, with some of

the original play toys on display.

This will be followed on by displays and demonstrations by the centre’s current evening users; nia yoga, pilates, Israeli dance, martial arts and boot camp style fitness classes, as well as the Tuesday morning Ladies Table Tennis Club.

Sharing others’ art while Andrew Lyons has been a sculptor for 30 years, and now he has opened his first gallery in the Heathcote Valley. He speaks to reporter Bridget Rutherford about creating art from recycled materials, growing up with ginger hair and his pet blackbird So Andrew, where did the idea to start up The Heathcote Valley Gallery come from?

I’ve been a sculptor for 30 years, selling in various galleries around the country. But when the earthquakes happened, nobody wanted to buy any art that sat on the shelf or hung on the wall. It was very hard to sell things and I earned very little. Luckily I’ve got a hard-working wife who has been supporting me.

The house in front of ours got badly damaged, and the woman who lived in it actually died between the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes. It wasn’t to do with the earthquakes.

The house was unlivable and was demolished and we bought the site to build the gallery. I put all my energy into the purpose-built gallery on the site. It’s taken 16 months.

And you mentioned your hardworking wife, can you tell me a bit about her?

Her name is Carol and she is a physio. She works very hard, I wouldn’t want her job. We’ve been married for 19 years, but we’d been together before that.

How did you two meet?

I met her when I was putting a door on a room that she was flatting in. I was doing carpentry jobs here and there. I’d known her briefly when it just so happened we both went on a trip to Stewart Island kayaking. I wasn’t immediately attracted to her, I don’t know if I should say this (laughing), but she was far too sporty for me.

She had lots of tennis rackets and things. I’ve never been into team sports, I was into hand gliding, surfing and kayaking.

Do you have any children or pets?

No children, we’ve had lots of dogs over the years. One of my favourite things is dog walking on the beach and in the hills. We’ve mainly had collie types, but I like all animals. The next door neighbour’s cat keeps coming around, it’s a white cat and I think he likes

I went off cats for a bit though.

I had a pet blackbird, I started feeding it and it became tamer and tamer. It used to sit on my knee and eat raisins out of my hand.

Then one day a bloody cat got him, so I was off cats for a bit but I like this one.

So what sort of pieces do you feature in the gallery?

A lot of my pieces were a bit large to put in other people’s galleries. So I’ve got some of my larger pieces in there, along with some nice paintings, pottery, stone sculptures and wood carvings.

There would be about 100 different pieces.

And is all of that work yours, or do you have other artists’ work too?

I have five other artists’ work in the gallery. They are all friends of mine. All but one of them are from Christchurch, one was living in Redcliffs but moved up to Auckland after the earthquakes.

And I only have New Zealand local-made art, they are all hand made original pieces.

Looking after the Estuary – why does it matter?

Chrissie Williams will reflect on her 20 years advocating for the protection of the Avon Heathcote Estuary/Ihutai.

She will discuss the importance of understanding the ecology and science; the planning and political processes; the effects of the city on the estuary; the values of the estuary on our well-being; and the interaction of all of these on a complex and ever-changing ecosystem.

As well as reflecting on the past Chrissie will indicate some of the future challenges that face the Estuary and our communities.

It’s in the heart of Heathcote, at 22 Station Rd. I’m open Wednesday to Saturday, but I’m happy to open any time. I work in the back so if someone is walking past and it is closed but they want to have a look I am happy to open it up to them.

And everything is for sale?

Yep, absolutely everything! I’d even sell the counter if someone wanted to buy it.

Is it the first gallery you have owned?

Yes, I used to wheel out a large cabinet on wheels and display some of my pieces on the road, but I never put really good stuff out there in case of vandalism. It’s looking really good now.

Have you always lived in Heathcote?

Well I’m originally from Redcliffs, but I live in Heathcote now.

It’s just such a nice place with the hills all around. We’re in our own little micro-climate, it’s a destination, because it’s not on the way to anywhere. I’ve been here since 1980. I’d always grown up next to the sea, so it took a bit of getting used to being in the hills.

Tell me about your style.

Well I really like animals, I do a lot of animal sculptures. I go and collect old tree stumps from all the old cut down trees from Banks Peninsula to use. I talk to the farmers out there and I use the wood to make things called touch bowls. I like to use recycled materials as well. Have you been to Upshot Coffee on Bridle Path Rd?

CRAFTY: Mr Lyons made ‘Herman the rubble necker’ out of materials such as broken crockery and pottery from the earthquakes.

No I haven’t, why is that?

Oh there is a sculpture of mine in there which I made with recycled bottle tops into a lizard. I also fuse glass into colourful shapes. I made a table from timber from a church on Gayhurst Rd which was demolished after the earthquakes.

I’ve also got a fella which I made out of earthquake-damaged crockery, wedding presents and pottery.

Some of it was my stuff and the next door neighbours gave me some of their broken things. It is a life-sized fella holding a camera, I call him Herman the rubble necker. He is an earthquake tourist, it’s a bit of a play on words because it

Where do you get your inspiration?

Absolutely everywhere! Nature mainly. I like to go to wild places, I’ve been able to travel to lots of different countries like the Pacific Islands and Borneo. But one of my favourite spots is Stewart Island.

I’ve been there about a dozen times, you see kiwis during the day, it’s amazing.

What materials do you like to work with most?

I used to be a cabinet maker when I left school, and I’ve been a postie and a builder. So I really like timber and exposing the

beautiful grain. I like working with stone too. I made a life-size stone gorilla in about 1987 or 88 and I still have him. I use stone from the Mt Somers quarry, and Oamaru stone and I go to recycle yards for timber too. Do you often forage for materials?

I love beach combing, I’ve got a fishing buoy that I got from Riverton in Southland, which I’ve turned into a sculpture. I had a metal detector that I used to fossick and find rings and coins and things. But that was a long time ago. Sometimes people would come and ask what I’m doing.

West Coast we found a large piece of rata, it was too heavy to carry so we thought we could float it back, but it was too heavy to float.

So we tried rolling it up the beach, but it got all sandy and looked like we were rolling a boulder up the beach. A Dutch tourist there thought it was the most extraordinary thing and was filming us.

That’s turned into a really hard little seat, it looks like a meteor.

What other jobs have you had?

I used to work at TVNZ making sets and scenery. I made Thingee, I don’t know if you’ll remember Thingee, you sound too young. I did stuff for That’s Country way back in the late 70s, early 80s. I was also a postie in Redcliffs and Sumner. I enjoyed the bike and seeing the changing of seasons.

Did everyone know who you were?

I had long hair, well I still do really. But one little girl came up to my gate one day and said ‘my mum doesn’t like your hair’ which I thought was hilarious, I just laughed.

Why the long hair?

Well I was ginger and it was an attempt to grow my own hat to cover my head and ears. And I’m very prone to skin cancer being the colour I am. It’s like growing my own hat.

And what did you used to get in trouble for at school?

I was always identified because I had bright red hair. So if there was a group and there was any trouble, I did take the rap a bit. I got used to it.

Collecting school supplies for Tonga counterpart

Cashmere High School’s student council is leading the charge in shipping school supplies over to its Tongan counterparts at the end of this year.

The council, made up of students from years 9 to 13, have been working closely with Russell Taylor from EcoCARE Pacific Trust to ship a container full of school supplies and resources over to Tonga High School this November.

Supplies have been collected since late July and other schools were also keen to help out.

Burnside High, Papanui High and Boys’ High have all kindly donated equipment and resources.

Burnside High donated projectors, televisions and books, Papanui High donated 50 computers and monitors, and Boys’ High gave dozens of maths textbooks and plastic chairs. Cashmere

students donated; books, board games and stationary. Someone even donated a bag with 100 pairs of pink crocs inside.

Cashmere students decided to help Tonga after they heard that parts of the country were still in despair following the destruction caused by Cyclone Ian in January last year.

Cashmere head boy River Foster, says that he didn’t expect so much was given to them.

“We [student council] were surprised with how much stuff was actually donated, other schools and students have been very generous.”

Cashmere liked the idea of having a sister school in another country which they can work with and the students are determined to do more in the future.

“We plan to set up a long-lasting relationship with Tonga High School and EcoCARE Pacific Trust,” he said.

MP holds workshops Port Hills-based National MP Nuk Korako kicked off a series of community engagement workshops earlier this month in Somerfield and Cashmere.

“Many locals took the opportunity to meet with me and bring ideas on what we can do to improve things in our Port Hills communities,” Mr Korako said.

The sessions proved successful and more will be held in Halswell and Sumner on Saturday.

“As an MP based here in the Port Hills it’s really important to be engaged with local people, to understand where there are things we can improve, and to hear the views of Port Hills people on the important issues of the day.

“These catch ups are also an opportunity for people to come and talk about individual issues they may be having. As an MP I can assist locals with many issues, including the often tricky process of dealing with local or central Government agencies,” he said.

These sessions will continue regularly throughout the electorate, with the next two scheduled for Halswell and Sumner, as follows: Halswell The Old Vicarage, 335 Halswell Rd 1.00pm – 3.00pm, Saturday Sumner Dot Com Café, 42 Marriner St 3.30pm – 5.30pm, Saturday

DIG IN: Cathedral College’s year 7 class, along with teacher Rick Stone visited Quail Island to learn about a range of topics: From dog kennels to penguin boxes. They also planted more than 120 native plants under the supervision of volunteers from the Quail Island restoration trust. The Rotary Club of Christchurch covered the costs of the ferry and the plants.

MATHS FUN: Hillmorton High School students held their own annual maths competition, modelled on the Cantamath competition.

“Hillmortonmaths” is an annual competition held at the school which saw all classes from years 7-10 compete against each other.

Each level has different questions, with the team from 10 S this year’s victors. In the Cantamath competition, Hillmorton entered teams at all levels from years 7-10 and though unplaced this year, they competed with enthusiasm. In other categories, Hillmorton came away with two highly commended prizes and three excellence awards at the competition which was held at Horncastle Arena.

Somerfield School wins sustainability award Somerfield School is among the winners of this year’s Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards.

The school’s eco-school leaders group has been named the winner of the Sustainable Schools Award.

The Sustainable Schools Award annually honours a teacher, school or tertiary institution for commitment and practical action to implement sustainable practices and environmental projects which enhance the school and/or community.

It is sponsored by NZ Couri-

ers and Somerfield School will be awarded seed money to fund environmental educational activities and programmes at the school.

The school runs an efficient recycling programme which was one of the reasons it took out the award.

The Tidy Kiwi Award was won

by Don Fitzgerald and William Butcher, who both work at Halswell Residential College.

Other awards included the Ruud Kleinpaste Award, Most Beautiful City award, Most Beau-

tiful Large Town award, Best Loo Award, the Community Environmental Initiative Award and the Kiwi’s Choice Award.

They will be officially presented at the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards Gala Dinner on September 5 at the Rydges Latimer.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful is a non-profit organisation and operates as a charitable trust to promote litter abatement, waste minimisation and the beautification of the country’s towns and cities.

Hoon Hay filmmaker seeks more funding THE PILOT episode of a musical web series filmed in Canterbury has reached 100,000 views online as its makers seek funding for more episodes.

The show A Long Way From Broadway is the brainchild of Merivale singer-songwriter Amy Bowie and Hoon Hay filmmaker Rowan Strang.

The web series is among 103 which have recently had applications submitted for New Zealand On Air funding.

All proposals submitted in this funding round required a ‘pilot’ or ‘taster’ episode, and the ‘proof of concept’ for A Long Way From Broadway is proving to be a hit four months after being posted on YouTube.

The web series is intended to be a six-episode original musical comedy celebrating amateur musical theatre production from a New Zealand perspective.

Mr Strang said the pilot’s success was tangible proof that Cantabrian creative talent had the goods to make a splash online and that there was a gap in the local and international market for musical web series.

awesome a show like this could be and how much support is already around for a series telling this kind of story.”

The application has drawn official support from Musical Theatre New Zealand and Showbiz Christchurch.

Series co-producer and choreographer Cameron Mason said more people danced in New Zealand every week than played rugby and netball combined.

“In 2014 there were nearly 90,000 New Zealand secondary school students taking performing arts as a subject. A Long Way From Broadway will meet this passionate young performing arts audience online – where they are at.”

Ms Bowie said that since the earthquakes, there had been little focus on telling Canterbury’s stories outside of narratives mediated by the disaster.

“The reality is, the people of

The current gutter ditches are just waiting to suck up the bikes if driven too close by cars and when the bike goes in the ditch it is likely the rider will fall off onto the road, Yuk!!

In some cases the road should be flattened out going further up the bank which in turn should widen it and make it more accommodating for both bikes and cars.

Harbour.

A lot of money has gone into roading repairs in these areas in recent years, but no thought has gone into widening the road margin while doing so to allow more room for cyclists and motorists to share the road safely.

I voiced my concerns to the city council about two years ago after a close call while cycling on the road between Allandale and Governors Bay, where cyclists are reduced to a very slow speed on the many short steep climbs.

Motorists are understandably very impatient when they come up behind a cyclist.

I know as I drive the road as well as cycling on it. The response from the city council was that they had plans in place to put up more signage about safe passing distances, which I don’t believe has ever happened.

All that is required is half a metre of tarseal left of the white line to allow cyclists to move over when traffic is behind them. This margin

The series will make no mention of the ‘E-word’, instead, focusing on a narrative set in the fictional small town of Takitomoko – conceived as a blend of Fairlie,

Motukarara, and Rangiora.

The team hope to film at least half of the series in the newly refurbished Rangiora Town Hall – a very long way from Broadway.

Up to five series will receive up to $100,000 from New Zealand On Air, with an announcement to be made on October 1.

Readers respond: Alan Fogarty: My whole family consists of five cyclists who all spend time on and around Dyers Pass Rd. Dyers Pass Rd provides a road riding route connecting the city with the Lyttelton Harbour bays, this being more important with the close of the Sumner Rd due to the earthquakes. It also provides entrances and exits to many of the mountain bike trails on surrounding hills.

We have experienced impatient drivers, but not all drivers are the same, we have found many to be courteous and cautious allowing for slower cycling traffic. The

League players train with former NRL star

BY KYLE KNOWLES Former Australian rugby league star Petero Civoneciva paid a visit to Christchurch last week, which included a training session with Hillmorton High School students.

It was not all fun and games either, with Civoneciva here in an official role with the NRL. He works as an ambassador for the NRL’s community programme passing on his knowledge and experience to the game’s younger players.

“I was a part of the establishment of the NRL community which means going out into the community all over the country visiting communities to deliver programmes to those towns. It’s great to engage young people and impart some key messages.”

Some of those messages are about healthy eating, bullying and the importance of education.

Civoneciva was here as a guest speaker at a Halswell Hornets’ function on Friday as well as running some coaching clinics with junior players from across the city.

He said it was nice to be able to continue working for the NRL after retiring from the game.

“Yeah, very much so were very blessed and privileged to play rugby league but now obviously very lucky to continue working in the game. It’s rewarding using your profile to impart some positive

Civoneciva said he still does some work with his old club, the Brisbane Broncos, but gets around all clubs and was impressed with the young talent coming through the ranks in New Zealand.

“It’s nice now to step back as a player and have an outsider’s perspective and understand how much passion is for the game which brings me to communities like this.

It blows me away how much passion there is for the game here.”

In spite of being focused on the grass roots game he still enjoys following his old teams, Brisbane and

the Penrith Panthers.

He said he always likes watching his old teams play but will sit on the fence in terms of supporting one over the other.

Civoneciva said the development of New Zealand players was great to see coming through the NRL and has transferred on the international stage where the Kiwis have been the top side.

As for rugby union, which Civoneciva played until his teenage years, he said the All Blacks were looking good leading into the World Cup and he always enjoys following the Wallabies.

Concert features kids and Kiwi music Cashmere Primary School pupils were part of a 500-strong mass choir which performed at the Wigram Air Force Museum last week.

The Kids for Kids “Slice of Heaven” concert, held on Monday, was packed with 100 per cent Kiwi music.

Sixty-five students from Cashmere Primary’s year 3 and 4 choir have been busy learning all the songs for the concert since the beginning of term 2.

The choir has enjoyed learning some current popular songs as well as some older classics.

Music from artists such as Dave Dobbyn, Annie Crummer, Ezra Vine, and Split Enz have become choir favourites.

Kids for Kids concerts have a 21-year history of performing with New Zealand primary school students. In recent years the concerts have featured Kiwi

entertainer Jackie Clarke and singer Nathan King.

The Kids for Kids concerts tour New Zealand between August 4 and November 11 and the Christchurch concerts are among their largest, with about 500 students performing each night.

The children are always excited – and a little nervous – to perform to an audience of around 800 people for the first time.

Teacher Kate Divett, who is responsible for the year 3 and 4 choir, said the concerts are a wonderful opportunity for younger students to have their first experience performing.

“The production team are so supportive and make sure all the children have a positive and fun experience. The students, their families, and our school community are so proud of what they have achieved.”

ustomers of the former Ferry Road Fisheries in Woolston were understandably disappointed when the business needed to close due to the redevelopment of the New World Supermarket. The fish and chips and other takeaways offered at Ferry Road Fisheries had been their favourites for many years.

But customers now have a reason to celebrate! The shop’s former manager, Darren Winsloe, has opened a brand-new

fish and chip shop just down the road.

The new Fish & Chips on Ferry is located in the complex near the ANZ Bank and the Night and Day at the rear of the car park, in the premises previously occupied by the Kumar Noodle House.

“I had been looking round the area for suitable premises when this place came up,” Darren says. “We are offering the same basic menu as before, but with a few new additions.

We have expanded our range of fresh fish,

now offering up to six varieties, which can be purchased fresh or crumbed to take home or have cooked on site.

“A variety of frozen products are available for purchase from the display freezer consisting of prawns, scallops and salt and pepper squid, to name a few. We are continuing to expand our chilled items with marinated mussels, cooked mussels as well as clams being offered at present.

“We have also changed to a better-quality fish as our standard fried fish.”

Darren says the majority of his former

customers have been coming to Fish & Chips on Ferry since it opened in mid-July, and the feedback has been very positive, with many compliments being given, especially for the new products he has introduced.

The other exciting development is the dine-in facilities, with tables available for customers to enjoy their freshly fried food straight away. A wide selection of cold drinks are also available.

Four of the previous staff members are back and they have been joined by two new staff members, Darren says.

Fish and chips are still the number one takeaway in New Zealand, and with its fresh new premises, old favourites and new additions to the menu, Fish & Chips on Ferry will no doubt continue to be the number one choice for many customers in Woolston.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra with Musical Director Rick Gerber, return to NZ following their triumphant 2013 tour when they took the country by storm in what was one of the largest international concert tours in recent years. The orchestra will again perform nationwide at 22 different locations between Kerikeri in the north and Invercargill down south.

After 26 sell-out shows in 2013, the Glenn Miller Orchestra returns to New Zealand from October 8 to November 8, 2015.

This time, the band honours the year of the ANZAC Centenary on a whistle stop tour to 22 different locations around New Zealand.

With this great lineup of America’s finest musicians including Moonlight Serenade Singers and the Broadway Swing Dancers. In the Spirit of ANZAC, the concert will also feature iconic music and songs from the years of the Great War. The Glenn Miller Orchestra occupies the whole show! That’s 2-hours of Glenn Miller's great music that continues to captivate millions.
