A WOMAN was robbed in her driveway by a man who smelled “like faeces” as she prepared for a family holiday. The woman was putting a bag into her car, in the driveway of her Memorial Ave home at about 5.45am yesterday. She was grabbed from behind by a man who wrapped what she thought was a piece of clothing around her neck. He then demanded money before pushing her aside and taking her bag, which contained morphine for treating a back complaint, and various items of clothing. He ran off before she could get a good look at him. The attack happened near the intersection of Greers Rd. Her three children, aged between eight and 13, were asleep inside at the time and her husband was at work. The family had been preparing for a weekend holiday. •Turn to page 3

WALKING AND drinking on your way to Riccarton Park for New Zealand Cup Day could become a thing of the past. Streets surrounding the racecourse may have a temporary liquor ban placed on them to stop people from littering the area with alcohol cans and bottles during New Zealand Cup and Show Week, November 7 to 14. The move would mirror the temporary alcohol bans in place around Addington Raceway during Cup and Show Week. Cantabs more likely to have sick day when hungover CHRISTCHURCH residents are the least likely to show up to work hungover, a new study shows. But that may be because we are more likely to pull a sickie after a night on the drink. The Southern Cross Health Society survey showed 43 per cent of Cantabrians admitted to going to work with a hangover, the lowest rate in the country. In most regions people were twice as likely to go to work hungover than to call in sick. But in Canterbury, 28 per cent said they had taken a sick day because they were hungover. Almost half of Cantabrians steered completely clear of alcohol during the week, with 48 per cent saying they had never gone to work or called in sick because of a hangover. The figures also show Cantabrians may be more likely to learn their lesson after a hangover. Cantabrians were among the least likely to have hangovers regularly. The majority, 55 per cent, said they suffered from a hangover only once every few years.

Police complaint laid over racist chants

A COMPLAINT has been laid with the police over the racist chants directed at Christchurch rugby player Sake Aca. Aca left the field in tears after being the subject of the chants while playing for Christchurch against Lincoln University in the club rugby final on Sunday. Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said police were assessing a complaint from the Canterbury Rugby Football Union. Police would speak to Aca and work with the rugby union to identify the person or persons involved. “It is unacceptable that in this day and age anyone is subjected to any form of discrimination, particularly racial abuse, and I urge anyone responsible to show some moral courage and come

forward to discuss and resolve the matter.” The chant allegedly directed at Aca (right), which included the words “n***r, n***r, on fire,” is believed to have come from a Lincoln University supporter, or supporters, located on the embankment. A rugby union spokeswoman said the university had identified a number of people who were on the embankment who may be able to assist police with their inquiries. The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority announced the changes to its Recovery Plan yesterday. I’d rather just have a coffee at O’Sheas. What would a perfect weekend in Christchurch include? Just what I do, I really enjoy what I do, catching up with family and sports. It’s a real community gathering, my weekend. Last year I’d have been off to St Bede’s to watch my son Ben play for the school, but now they play on Wednesday evenings, so that’s what frees me up on the weekend.

The human race gears The average man in Christchurch is now expected to live to 79, and women to 83. And as populations age, it can change the shape of the community and life as we know it. Gabrielle Stuart reports LOOKING DOWN at their fourweek-old granddaughter, Gwen and Mervyn Cross have a hard time imagining her in her 80s. Little Violet is already short on hair, has no teeth and sleeps a lot. But that’s where the similarities end. And by the time she is elderly, the world could be a completely different place. This week, Statistics New Zealand released it’s life expectancy statistics, which show how long the average baby born today is likely to live. For children in Christchurch, that is 79 years for boys, or 83 years for girls. But technology is already helping elderly people to see, to hear and to stay mobile. Advances in research and medical science are being announced every week. And it’s already showing effects, as older people are driving for longer, putting off retirement and waiting until they are older to move into residential care. In 2098, when baby Violet is 83, it’s hard to imagine what the world will be like for the elderly. “Technology will make things much easier for them,” Mr Cross speculates. But Mrs Cross is more concerned about the flip side. “There may not be any jobs left for them. Everything will be done by computers.” Both have lived in Canterbury all their lives. Mr Cross’ parents both died in their 60s. His father was a fencer, and his mother had 11 children – so by the time they were old, they were

PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN both pretty tired, he said. Mrs Cross’ father was a farmer, and died at the age of 64 after a stroke. Her mother died in her 90s, but she was very active – “a force to be reckoned with” – and kept driving well into her 80s. At the time she was the exception to the rule, but now independence is a lot more common. Mr Cross is 75, but only retired last year – and he still works over Christmas at Ballantynes as a store Santa. Mrs Cross ran a Salvation Army store for 20 years, and then took up work as a cleaner – which she only retired from this year. “If you’re lucky enough to be in a job where you can keep working that’s definitely a good thing,” Mrs Cross said. “But don’t work so long you don’t get to enjoy your retirement, because you never know how long

you’ve got.” The majority of New Zealanders want to retire by 65 but less than a third of people believe they can, a survey by job marketplace Seek showed in December. One in 10 New Zealanders believed they would still be working past the age of 75. Often that can be by choice, as people want the extra cash or enjoy their work and would prefer to stay busy. As people stay healthier for longer, some feel they have no reason to retire early. But for others, “I’m going to work ‘til I die” is a threat hanging over their heads. The Bank of New Zealand used the refrain to advertise its Kiwisaver scheme, saying there was no guarantee New Zealand Superannuation could provide for you at current levels once it was your time to retire.

It’s not secret the population is ageing. The number of New Zealanders aged 65 years old and over is expected to increase from around 550,000 in 2009 to 1 million in the late 2020s, when they are expected to outnumber children. The Ministry of Social Development says that is partly because of lower fertility, partly because people are living longer, and partly because of the baby boomers. By 2061, people aged 85 or older are expected to make up a quarter of people over 65, compared with one in eight in 2009. The effects of an ageing population are already being seen in places like Japan. There, more than 25 per cent of the population are now over 65. That means there are shrinking numbers of workers paying tax, and growing numbers of pensioners.

It also means the total population there is expected to drop by a quarter by 2050, so the problem is expected to get worse. The Government has warned people over 65 could make up nearly 40 per cent of the population by 2060. But it also means the country is becoming a leader in developing technology and care for the elderly. Technology is being used to connect people with their GPs through their computer or TV, so they can get medical advice without leaving the house. In cars, developers are creating dashboards with bigger numbers and letters, hand controls which can be easier to use and even intelligent cars which could learn the driving patterns of the driver and intervene if the person hits the accelerator suddenly or does anything dangerous.

Even robot pets and intelligent toilets are being developed with older users in mind. New Zealand Aged Care Association chief executive Simon Wallace said the Government needed to recognise and value the older population, and work to develop solutions to support them. “There is a need for increased capacity in aged residential care facilities and an even bigger need to support and provide high standards of care,” he said. But he said people were also waiting until they were older to move to residential care. In 2006-07, the average entry age was 83, and it is now 84. The overall average age of residents has risen from 84 in 2006-07, to 85 now. There are plenty of reasons New Zealanders are staying independent for longer. New Zealanders over 65 are now more likely to be driving than people in their 20s or early 30s. In 2003, 84 per cent of people over 65 drove. But by 2013 that had risen to 91 per cent. Heart disease and death caused by strokes have dropped by about 4 per cent a year since the 1970s. The numbers of smokers have dropped drastically, and the cancer mortality rate has dropped by more than 20 per cent since 1980. The average life expectancy in New Zealand in 1900 was under 60 for both men and women, so it has grown by more than 20 years. But emeritus professor Dick Sainsbury, who works with the Health Care of the Elderly team at Otago University, said there was no guarantee it would continue to rise. The biggest change in mortality rates came in the 1800s, because of better hygiene and sanitation, he said. Medical advances did play a part, but weren’t as significant as changing things which were causing people to get sick, he said.

NON-MAORI New Zealanders were believed to have the highest life expectancy in the world between 1870-1940. That could partly be due to the age of the country, as European immigrants arriving in New Zealanders would mostly have been young and healthy. The sort of diet New Zealanders consumed, with an abundance of fresh meat and vegetables here, was also believed to be a factor. But more recently, the figures haven’t been nearly as good. Last year, the average life expectancy of 81 years in New Zealand meant we were ranked 26th in the world. That was well behind Australia, which ranked 10th with a life expectancy of 82 years. But we ranked above the United Kingdom at 29th and the United States at 42nd. Monaco had the best life expectancy, with an average ago of 90 years, well above the 84 years in second closest Japan. Chad and South Africa ranked worst, with the average life expectancy only 49 years and 50 years, respectively. “The population was starting to age by the end of the 19th century, before antibiotics or other medical advances became established. Although he believed the life expectancy might continue to rise gradually, he did not believe it would change significantly. The biggest change would come from improving quality of life for the elderly, he said. “We now need to think very carefully about what we are doing with high-tech medicine to try to improve quality of life and activity, rather than just length of life.” He hoped ways to delay or prevent things like osteoporosis, strokes or arthritis could be developed. “People are already working to develop these things, which makes me confident that things may get better in terms of people’s quality of life as they age. I’m optimistic about the future.” And although he has seen medical science develop a lot over his career, he doesn’t think the secret to immortality will be discovered any time soon. “People have been looking for that for a long time and they haven’t found it yet,” he said.

CHRISTCHURCH 107-year-old Annie Mason is believed to be the oldest living New Zealander. She has seen plenty of history, and remembers both world wars. She has also stayed very independent, living in her own home until she was 105. But Invercargill woman Maudie Wilson, who died in 2013, is believed to have lived the longest. She died at the age of 110 years and seven months. According to Guinness World Records, the oldest person to have lived was 122-year-old

Frenchwoman Jeanne Louise Calment. Other people have been claimed to be older. In 2013, an Ethiopian man was claimed to be 160 years old. He was interviewed by a TV station there, and seemed to have vivid recollection of things that happened in the 1850s. But no one could verify his actual age. The oldest living person in the world is believed to be 116-year-old Susannah Mushatt Jones, from New York. She remembers the invention of the car, the aeroplane, the television and the internet.

Red zone houses Drug mule pleads guilty given more time By Gabrielle Stuart

RELOCATABLE red zone houses in danger of demolition next week have been given a temporary reprieve. The Community Housing Trust has helped about 40 low-income families to buy and relocate red zone houses. But about 15 were not able to move them by the deadlines the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority set, because of delayed consents or relocation problems. Any houses not cleared by the end of month were set to be demolished under CERA plans to clear the land. But it has now extended the deadline for some houses into August. CERA acting chief executive John Ombler said extensions had been given where market capacity meant they may not be able to be relocated in time. Some house removal companies have been booked up for months because there is so much demand for their services. “I recognise that it is of benefit to the community to provide affordable housing through relocation and a further extension has been granted to allow as many houses to be relocated as possible,” Mr Ombler said. He said all remaining houses

were due to be removed before the end of August. Trust founder Garry Moore said the families who owned the houses were very happy about the decision. If the deadline had not been extended, they would need to pay up to $12,000 each to cover the extra expense of double-shifting the houses. They would be moved to the QE II site until the new sections were ready, and then would have to be moved again. Up to five houses may still need to be temporarily shifted there, and the city council has given permission for them to be stored on the site for up to six months. Mr Moore said CERA, the city council and the house removal companies involved had all been very helpful. “They have been excellent and very supportive of what we were doing,” he said. The trust was set up to help relocate red zone houses, and with most areas being cleared, Mr Moore said these houses were likely to be the last. But the trust is looking at other ways of providing affordable housing. Cheaper foundation designs are being looked at, as well as new second units people could build on their own sections.

A DRUG-CARRYING woman involved in a spectacular crash near Christchurch Airport last year has pleaded guilty to concealing more than $18,000 of P inside her body. Kylie Puna, 27, admitted two charges relating to possessing methamphetamine for supply in Auckland District Court this week. In November, Puna (below) was a passenger in a vehicle which crashed through a police road block in Yaldhurst Rd (right), spun out of control and collided with another vehicle. Armed police had been watching and following the car Puna was in as part of a nationwide investigation into drugs from the North Island being brought into Christchurch via the airport. Her lawyer Maria Pecotic briefed Judge Nicola Mathers on her client’s progress in a

residential rehabilitation facility, in which she has completed 64 days of a 118-day treatment programme. Judge Mathers said she was “very pleased” with the positive steps Puna had made. “Obviously there are some issues you still have to deal with, but you understand what those issues are, and the report is very positive,” she said. “I hope you can continue on the path to recovery that you are on

Knighted businessman’s heirlooms go in burglary By Kyle Knowles FAMILY heirlooms that belonged to one of Canterbury’s most well-known businessmen have been stolen as part of an alleged burglary spree. The late Sir Lawrence Govan’s knighthood regalia and memorabilia were taken from his son’s house in Riccarton. Sir Lawrence was given the honour for services to industry and community in 1984. He helped run the Lichfield clothing company after his father started the company in the early 1900s. Family jewellery including greenstone carvings and a jewellery container with the engraved details of Sir Lawrence’s knighthood were stolen. The jewellery container has been recovered by police. The other items haven’t. Sir Lawrence’s son, Bert Govan, said it was terrible to have such precious items taken but it was fantastic to get the jewellery container back. “It was wonderful to get that back and a couple of other minor items but the main pieces haven’t been recovered.” The jewellery container was found in a crashed car near Methven.

Accidental power cut to 13,000 homes

AN ORION contractor working in a Springston substation accidentally cut power to 13,000 homes yesterday afternoon. The outage affected Lincoln, Rolleston, Burnham, Dunsandel, Tai Tapu, Motukarara and parts of Banks Peninsula between 4.234.39pm. An Orion spokesman declined to say what exactly the contractor did to cause the outage as it was “potentially embarrassing” and it was company policy not to go into specifics. “We had 8000 back on within 10 minutes and the remaining [customers] back on with about 15 minutes,” he said. Orion’s website crashed during the outage because of the large number of hits from people looking for details. “The company has just rolled out a new website and it needs to be better hosted so we can cope with outages like this and provide information.” The work at the substation had been routine but the outage was not planned. “We shouldn’t have lost service to 13,000 customers, so we apologise for that,” the spokesman said. Many people took to the Rolleston Community Page on Facebook to post about the outage.

Making a difference in Malawi I MET a village chief from Malawi this week. His name was Chief Onga (known simply as “Chief ” – mint title) and he came all the way from Africa – on his very first flight – to tell Kiwis what Christian organisation World Vision has been doing in his area. Of course we had to nab him, and invited him onto the Daily Fix last Friday morning. And guess what – he said yes! We were all excited about our prestigious guest. His arrival at our studio caused quite a stir. “He’s here …” I whispered to my co-host Aaron, when I spotted Chief and his interpreter, Dan, stepping into the reception area. We finished a slot, the ad break rolled and our Malawian guest was ushered in. “This is Aaron and EJ….” Producer Vinnie said, pointing. “Oh yes! April’s sister!” Chief said with a grin. Evidently he’d met my sis – a World Vision fundraising promoter – at his talk the night before. I felt very proud. “That’s me!” He gave me an enthusiastic (and confusing) triple-handshake, a custom in some parts of Africa, and was seated. “We have got so many questions for you!” Aaron said. The camera started rolling, and we began … The tale that soon unravelled was a bittersweet one: Chief was born into a very poor community or subsistence farmers, where

came time to wrap up I still had a thousand questions running through my head. All I can say is – if you’ve got a few dollars to spare, this is such a great cause to give to. While others may give “band-aid” handouts, World Vision prides itself on developing communities by giving people the skills, and tools, to look after themselves. I know, because I grew up writing to my “adopted sister”, Brenda. While I grew up in the burbs of Christchurch, she lived thousands of kilometres away, in a little mud hut in Uganda. She grew up in squalor. I grew up in St Albans. She chased chickens and tended crops. I used to grumble about emptying the dishwasher. I don’t think I can quite muster a Martin Luther King-type speech, a rousing call to action, but I will say this: You can make a difference. Michael Bayly

Show goes on, even offstage After a life of performing in musicals, Michael Bayly has stepped into a new role as Showbiz Christchurch general manager. He speaks to Tom Doudney about the characters he has played and theatre superstitions Tell me about your background before becoming the general manager. I spent 15 years in the wine and spirits industry and the last seven of those as manager of Hancocks Wine and Spirits Merchants. Prior to that, I spent most of my 20s touring as a travelling singer and actor. I have a degree in opera and I travelled through Australasia doing major musicals. So I have that colourful marriage of an arts background but also business management, which really comes together in its perfect realisation in this role with Showbiz Christchurch, where I am commercially managing an arts company that specialises in musical theatre. What got you started on that path towards music and theatre? Like many professionals I started when I was very young. I was brought up in Lower Hutt and was singing in a local church choir that just happened to have an extraordinary choir master. Of the 12 or so boys in the choir at that time, from ages seven to 12, about half of them went on to be professional musicians. That early start makes all the difference in the world. What were some of the musicals you were in? Shows like West Side Story, Secret Garden, Mikado, as opposed to the more dance driven musicals. So you’re not so much of a dancer then? I have done quite a bit of dance but I am a singer first and foremost. Musicals always have a balance of singers and dancers. As a trained singer you certainly need to be able to move but you don’t need to be able to do 15 – 20 pirouettes. They will employ a technical dancer with years of experience for that. What appeals to you about this art form? I think musicals and opera are the most complete stage art form in the sense they bring together all aspects of orchestral music, staged dramas and music on the live stage. An average musical can involve up to 120 people once you include the orchestra, cast and crew so it’s the ultimate in collaborative entertainment. Musical theatre especially is the most popular live entertainment in the world and lots of people don’t realise just how many people attend musicals. Phantom of the Opera has had about 140 million people purchase tickets to it around the world and up

until four months ago, it was the highest-earning entertainment piece of all time. Showbiz Christchurch had 24,000 people come to see Phantom of the Opera at the Isaac Theatre Royal. Globally, on any given day, about 300,000 people have gone to a theatre and watched a musical. Are you still on stage or are you just working behind the scenes now? I won’t be doing major Showbiz Christchurch roles but that doesn’t mean I won’t perform at all outside of that. The last show that Showbiz Christchurch staged prior to the earthquakes was Sweeney Todd. That was originally supposed to be in September 2010 but we delayed it because of the September earthquake and opened in October instead. I played the role of Sweeney Todd. After decades of live performance, I can say that was the most rewarding show that I have ever been involved with. To compensate for all the time I spent away from home during that production I had to buy the family a dog!

What sort of dog did you get them? His name is Poochiny and he’s a cavoodle – a mix of poodle and cavalier king charles. And how has Poochiny worked out? The dog has gone down very well with the family. Tell me about your family. My wife Donna Alley and I met through music. She played the role of Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera and I was in a support role. We have a 10-year-old daughter Michaela who is also studying dance and music. What are your favourite or most memorable roles you have played?

In Miss Saigon for Showbiz Christchurch I played the role of John, who has probably one of the best songs of musical theatre, a song called Buidoi. It’s a modern ballad which was just a joy to sing. But if I go back to my professional touring days, probably the shows that I enjoyed the most were on my very first New Zealand tour, which was a 17-city tour of Cinderella where I was Prince Charming and was performing with UK pantomime star Windsor Davies. You might know him from [British sitcom] It Ain’t Half Hot Mum. When did Showbiz Christchurch start? It started in 1938. It’s a not-for-profit organisation that stages major musicals of world-class standard for the benefit of Canterbury audiences and the members who perform in those shows. Without a company like it, Christchurch would be highly unlikely to see major musicals on this scale with full orchestra, full light rigs, set, in a large fly-powered theatre. Most of the people involved in our shows are volunteers. We would have more than 100 volunteers for a show. How do you find so many volunteers for a show? New Zealand, just as we do in sports and other arenas, has a vast amount of ability and talent that doesn’t choose to engage in a full professional career in the industry. It’s like how there are lots of people who love to play rugby but they don’t all become All Blacks. We provide the opportunity for people with ability and passion for theatre to be involved in worldclass productions in their home town. I’m sure you’ve had a lot of highlights in your career – but has anything ever gone disastrously wrong? Yes, when I was performing in Secret Garden at St James Theatre in Auckland. As there always is, there were a lot of large items hanging above the stage including a large egg that the leading soprano sat in and was lowered down in. The rope snapped and the cast were within 10 to 15 seconds of being pancakes. Thankfully everyone survived. But that’s why there are so many theatre superstitions such as not being allowed to whistle backstage. In the early 20th Century and before, all of the sets hanging above the stage were lowered in by rope and the people working the ropes tended to be ex-sailors and they would signal which one to bring down with claps and whistles. So the idea was that if you walk around a theatre stage whistling, you might have something drop on your head. Do you take those

superstitions pretty seriously yourself? Absolutely. Theatre is a place of extraordinary tradition and I respect all of those traditions. It’s quite an old-fashioned environment with rigid structure and people who love performing on stage really enjoy those disciplines and tend to be very organised people. Here’s a really bizarre fact for you. Most New Zealanders do not realise that for the last 20 years, New Zealand has won the most international choral competitions and we are recognised as the greatest choral singing nation on the planet. We have won world cups but it gets very little media coverage. There are more people singing in the choir each week than taking part in any other community events including sports such as rugby or golf. How old were you when you first realised that singing and performing might be your thing? Probably about seven or eight. I used to sing all the child solo roles until my voice broke. Your first production in the general manager role is going to be the Monty Python musical Spamalot. Tell me about that. We open at the Isaac Theatre Royal on the September 4 which is coincidentally the fifth anni-

versary of the original September 2010 earthquake that postponed Sweeney Todd. Spamalot was almost ready to open by the time of the February 22 earthquake but was canned because of it. We look at this opening as a bit of a symbol of the city evolving and getting back and we are going to have a little ceremony for us, run by the Wizard of Christchurch who is playing one of our characters, called the Return of Laughter. We have invited Eric Idle from Monty Python, who wrote Spamalot, to come to the opening but we can’t guarantee he will be there.

2 cloves Garlic, crushed ¼ cup Sesame seeds

To make slicing easier, freeze the meat for approximately 30 minutes prior to preparation.

Directions Heat 2 teaspoons of the oil in a wok. Stir-fry the beef together with the oyster sauce for 1 minute, until just cooked. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Heat the remaining oil and sauté the spring onions and snow peas for 1 minute Add the fish sauce and garlic. Return the beef to the pan, toss together with the sesame seeds and serve.

Ingredients 4 Tbsp Brown rice oil 500g Beef fillets, thinly sliced 4 Tbsp Oyster sauce 2 Spring onions, thinly sliced into 5cm lengths 1 cup Snow peas, trimmed and thinly sliced 2 tsp Fish sauce

Salmon fillets with tomato, wine and crispy basil leaves

Serves 4 Serve this poached salmon on polenta and garnish with fried basil leaves for a crunchy texture.

2 Tbsp Tomato paste 1 to taste Sea salt and cracked black pepper 600ml Water 125g Polenta, instant 4 pieces Boneless salmon fillets 30g Butter 1 bunch Basil leaves

Ingredients 2 Tbsp Olive oil ¼ cup Basil leaves 1 clove Crushed garlic 1 Red onion, finely sliced ¼ cup White wine 1 can Diced tomato 2 Tomatoes, chopped (or you could use another can of diced)

Directions Heat the oil in large frying pan and saute the garlic and onion for 3-4 minutes over a gentle heat until softened, but not coloured. Add the wine and simmer for 1 minute, then add the tomatoes (fresh/canned), the paste and season well. Simmer a further 5min.

Add the salmon portions and lower the heat to gently poach the fish. Cook for 8-10min until just starting to flake in the thickest part. For polenta, bring water to the boil, then whisk constantly as you pour in the grains in a steady steam (this prevents lumps). Cook for 3-4 minutes until thickened and smooth. Add butter and season well. If the polenta gets too thick, add a few tbsp hot water. Arrange a large spoonful of polenta on each plate and top with salmon. Spoon over extra sauce and top with crispy basil.

Ingredients 1 serving Yams 1 serving Baby carrot 1 Tbsp Honey 1 Tbsp Balsamic vinegar 1 serving Olive oil, to drizzle Directions Scrub some yams and baby carrots clean. Dry and place in a roasting dish. Mix through honey, balsamic vinegar, salt and freshly ground black pepper and a drizzle of olive oil. Rachel Vogan talks you through what to be doing in the garden now

With the shortest day behind us, you have so much to look forward to in the garden, and with more daylight there is plenty to be getting on with when time and weather permits.

WINTER HERBS

Hardy, healthy and packed full of flavour, a number of mainstay, evergreen herbs can be planted now. These include thyme, rosemary, sage and bay. Thyme comes is a range of varieties. Some, such as lemon thyme, have citrus notes, whereas pizza thyme packs a garlic, oregano and onion flavour. Rosemary varieties vary in habit, rather than flavour, with the carpeting types being perfect for low tubs and growing down banks and walls. The upright versions are perfect for hedging and clipped topiaries. As for sage, the foliage may vary in colour but the flavour is pretty much the same. With bay, all you need to remember is to keep it somewhere you’ll be reminded to use it. All of these herbs are happy in tubs and large urns. Avoid those fiddly little herb planters for these bigger herbs; they don’t provide enough space for the roots to develop.

LADYBIRDS

Did you know that ladybirds overwinter in small clusters in dry pockets and corners of the garden? This could be in the nook of the garden shed, or under some logs or garden structures and statues. Sometimes, they hide in rose hips, nut shells or inside pine cones. Once a few ladybirds find the perfect spot, they exude a ‘safety’ pheromone, which indicates to other ladybirds that this is a safe haven in which to nestle for the winter.

BEES

Like ladybirds, honeybees live in colonies, and overwinter by hunkering down in a hive or in a nest they have devised. Usually, they feed off the honey stores built up over the season; however, this can run short if hives have been overharvested. To help bees through this difficult time, plant plenty of flowers to provide yearround food for them. This will certainly help limit fatalities if the honey supplies deplete.

STRAWBERRIES

Harvesting sweet, juicy strawberries may seem like months away when you’re in the middle of winter, but now is the time to take some action to ensure you have the best possible crop for next season. Lift and divide existing strawberry plants; remove dead leaves and old runners, and prune out any dead stems. Before replanting, heap loads of strawberry potting mix or compost onto the soil, then sprinkle in strawberry fertiliser and fork through.Next, replant the divisions, about 25cm apart. If planting out new strawberry beds, do the same, but when choosing your new plants, look for ones that have strong leaf growth. Don’t worry about the flower buds yet, the winter frost gets most of these now. The winter chill stimulates the flower bud set for the season, so the sooner your beds are done, the better for you.

It’s time to lift and divide existing strawberry plants.

TOOL TIME

Now is the ideal time to book in some repairs, maintenance and TLC for your garden tools. Set aside all those ones with wonky handles, bent tines or blunt blades to repair and sharpen. Make a list of what essentials you require for the upcoming season and then shop around for the best deals. It is always wise to invest carefully in well-crafted strong tools, with good handles (stainlesssteel blades where possible), and a guarantee of durability. Taking the cheap option in the tool department usually costs you in the long run, in either time or frustration when something snaps, bends or breaks.

Potato seed spuds are in the shops now, and whilst it is far too early to be planting them out, you can be thinking about preparing your soil for next season’s plot (if your soil isn’t too boggy, that is). Don’t panic about buying your seed spuds too early as they will be in the shops for a few months. Broad beans are shooting up, now, and need to be staked. Parsnips will lose all their big, outer leaves, and consolidate into little tufts of green. They hold well in the soil over winter, so dig as required. Blanche in hot water, and freeze in a freeflow style to enjoy as you wish.

Canterbury house prices were rocketing, rental availability tight, and our trades were ‘flat out’. However in the past few months we have noted a definite change (although we remain busier than ever). Some tradies are heading to Auckland looking for work, rental clients report lower demand from tenants, and the number of clients reporting difficulty in making tax payments is a concern. In uncertain times it is worth remembering the basics that will make your business more resilient in quieter times: 1. Top quality work at a fair price is always in demand. 2. Tighten your financial belt. Cut

expenditure, sell unnecessary assets, and hide your eftpos card. Look much closer at staffing levels. 3. Save for tax. The average trades business needs to save 10% of turnover for GST and another 12% for income tax. 4. Address IRD & ACC debts early with a payment arrangement. 5. For our rental clients, tighter times may see rent arrears, and probably more effort/ time to find suitable tenants. The best advice here is to have a property that attracts good tenants. NZ NEW MANUFACTURERS are constantly searching for ways to make their automotive product more appealing. Especially so in terms of fuel efficiency and power output. Just recently I evaluated Renault’s high performance Megane RS265. Not long after I took that car back, I was asked if I wanted to drive the Megane RS275 Limited Edition, as you guessed it, it has a higher output engine. I was smitten with the 265, it was an incredibly fast car and I wouldn’t have thought it needed more power but, as history has served to prove, if an engine can deliver more it will be exploited. So, the Megane RS275 has power outputs of 201kW and 360Nm, the 275 figure relating to European horsepower figures. Power has been increased by 6kW, while the torque figure remains the same. While it would take a very quick driver to notice the difference in power, the end result is that the Megane RS is a desirable sports machine. The test car was also carrying Trophy badges in reference to the one-make Renault Sport racing series. Because of that motorsport connection, the Megane RS lends itself to the odd piece of competition, and it has electronic onboard components such as the RS Monitor system which the driver can utilise to extract performance benefits. Using a USB storage device this data can be downloaded onto a Microsoft platform. In Trophy form the Megane RS lists at $74,990, and for that money, not only do you get a very spirited car, it comes with all the goodies you would expect from a hot hatchback. Disappointingly, I was presented with rain during the day I elected to go testing. Nevertheless, what the wet roads served to prove is how capable the Megane is in all conditions. All of the mechanical elements are structured so that speed and acceleration are key factors in how the car operates. Yet, at city speeds it is still very drivable, the high torque figure and flexible turbo boost allow for relaxed slow speed driving.

When you give the accelerator a bit of a nudge the RS275 squirts quickly to dizzy speeds, and that needs to be kept in check for the car loves to perform. Renault claim a 6sec sprint to 100km/h, and it will lunge through a highway overtake (80km/h to 120km/h) in 3.5sec. These are quick times, and if you add in a 255km/h top speed, the Megane RS doesn’t hang back. It is also one of the most powerful front-wheel-drive cars I have driven, yet such is the brilliance of the driveline there is not a lot of torque steer, and the chassis doesn’t overly rely on the traction and stability control

devices. Yes, the wet roads didn’t provide much grip and I was very circumspect under those conditions, but in the short stretches of dry that I encountered I was once again reacquainted with its handling brilliance. And it’s not all at a cost of occupant comfort, the suspension is rigid but there is just enough compliance to take away the pain of Christchurch’s broken roads. The Megane RS only arrives in manual form and the six-speeder has a shift action that encourages quick ratio changes. I headed west in the test car to escape the southerly front; hoping for dry roads I tackled the Porters Pass road through to Lake Lyndon. On the tricky incline it points and steers with precision. The Megane RS is a true driver’s car, it rewards when clean lines are chosen and such is its competence it encourages the driver to explore its potential. When the turbo is boosting hard the engine barks and growls like a racing car, the exhaust note is enticing, all of the elements true to high performance motoring are blended into the RS. There’s no shortage of affordable sports machines available to the Kiwi buyer, especially cars from out of Europe. The Megane RS has a fearsome reputation for its ability as an all-rounder. Personally, I don’t see it much as a serious vehicle for family transport, even though there are four seats, the rear seating area is confined and wouldn’t be comfortable for long journeys. Nevertheless, I’d describe it as a selfish car, it rewards the driver who likes to feel a solid boost of turbocharged power, but will still return a 7.5-litre per 100km (38mpg) combined cycle fuel usage claim if treated with respect. I’m left wondering just how much more power Renault can extract from this engine.

Crunch games in city’s football leagues

To play off or not? PLAY-OFFS CAN be some of the most exciting times in sport. Whether they’re the gaudy, two-month-long, up-to-28-game affairs of the NBA and the NHL, or simply a one-and-done final, they seem to carry an extra level of excitement for fans and players alike. But are they the fairest way to decide who’s best? And should we have them at all? I’ve always preferred a pure league system, to be honest. Everyone plays each other once, or twice, or three or four times, and whoever wins the most games is the best. The more times the better, obviously, because that way any luck or any fluke results will be ironed out – the longer it goes on, the surer you can be that the cream has risen to the top. It’s a belief I’ve always held on to, and never had much cause to doubt, until the other day when I was talking to someone who seemed to find the idea of not having play-offs – no semis or finals – to be absolutely bizarre. For better or for worse, they do seem to have become ingrained as the way we do things in New Zealand (and Australia, and the United States, where it would appear we’ve inherited them from). The problem with play-offs is that they bring a massive serving of luck into the mix, and a season’s hard work can be erased in the space of a couple of hours. Take Lincoln University, and this year’s club rugby competition. I don’t think anyone would disagree with the notion that they were the best side in the city this winter. They won 15 games, drew one, and lost none during the regular season, and were clearly superior to everyone else. Then they had to go and put it all on the line in two winner-

LUCKY: Lincoln University were clearly the best team in Christchurch club rugby this year, but had to navigate the randomness of oneoff play-off games in order to claim the title, which they did last Sunday. takes-all, one-and-done play-off games – a semi-final against New Brighton, and then, having survived that, last Sunday’s final against Christchurch, two games they won by a combined margin of eight points, and where they were both pushed right to the wire. If Lincoln Uni were to have played those two teams 10 times, or 100 times, or 1000 times, everything we know about them suggests they would have won a vast majority of them – at least 60 per cent, I would think, and probably higher. But in a one-off game, random variance can take hold, and anything can happen, allowing lesser teams to come through and

grab the spoils. Of course, that’s part of why play-offs are so popular – a lot of people love seeing underdogs get up, and the added uncertainty and tension does tend to make for a thrilling spectacle for fans. There’s also the argument that the best teams should be able to overcome any bad fortune, and that passing the play-offs test, as it were, is simply a part of what they must go through to claim to be the best. But is that added excitement worth the downside that comes with randomness? I’m not sure that it is, which is why I guess I prefer football, the one code in the city which doesn’t bother with play-offs,

but still manages to get its taste of knockout fun, holding cup competitions that run alongside the leagues. The others – rugby, basketball, netball, league and hockey – all use them, which means the best teams in those codes are at risk of coming to the end of winter and finding themselves emptyhanded. With the league final next weekend, the hockey final the weekend after that, then those for netball and basketball to follow, we will soon find out if those teams can manage it. But in the meantime, they will all be looking to Lincoln for inspiration, hoping they can pull off the perfect ending too.

First in the women’s premier league, where defending champions Coastal Spirit will play Universities at ASB Football Park, knowing a win will secure them a fourth title in a row. Last weekend Universities and Cashmere Technical couldn’t be separated, drawing one-all, a result that left Coastal in control of their own destiny for the first time since they lost to Universities earlier in the season. That was the only game Coastal have lost this year, and captain Chloe Jones says they are eager to make up for it tomorrow. “We want to go out there and prove that we can beat them. We’re not going to take them lightly. They’re definitely a very, very good squad and they’ve shown that over the season, so hopefully we can put our best foot forward and get the result we’re after.” Later, in the men’s league, leaders Cashmere Technical will host second-place Nelson Suburbs at Garrick Park. Tech currently hold just a twopoint advantage, after dropping valuable points in a draw with relegation-threatened Christchurch United two weeks ago, which saw their buffer at the top of the table effectively erased. Coach John Brown said they’ve definitely picked up their game since then. “We were disappointing over the last couple of weeks leading up to (the United game), we probably weren’t on song. I just felt in the preparation for that game, the coaching staff and the players weren’t up to their normal standard. “We had a bit of a chat about it last week at training, to get the standards back, and (the team) bounced back with a good result against Uni (last weekend).” From here, both teams have divergent schedules - Tech still have to play Coastal (currently 4th), Western (5th) and Ferrymead Bays (3rd), and are still alive in the Chatham and English Cups, while Suburbs’ only concerns will be their three remaining league games, against Halswell United (7th), Christchurch United (8th), and Western – so whoever can emerge atop the ladder tomorrow will be in the box seat.

Papanui, Riccarton fully focused for finals clash By Andrew Voerman THE PAPANUI Tigers have moved on quickly. Last week’s 56-4 thrashing at the hands of the Linwood Keas in the major semi-final has been put behind them, and they are now completely focused on tomorrow’s preliminary final against the Riccarton Knights. Coach Johnny Pritchard says they’ve identified what went wrong, and what they’re going to do about it. “Last week we didn’t get off to a good start, and we couldn’t recover, and we came off on the end of a hiding. “We’ve still got a good team and the boys know where they went wrong and we’re just looking to rectify that this week.” Pritchard said he thought his side may have been overawed by the occasion last weekend. “They were definitely ready to play, but I think the excitement of a major semi-final just got to them a little bit, and we sort of rushed things. We were on the wrong side of the penalty ledger from the get-go, which led to two quick tries for them – they were all over us and we were down 12-

Pritchard said those wins meant nothing heading into tomorrow. “Finals footy’s a totally different ball game. Riccarton are a very strong side and they’ve got a very good team cohesion and a great bond there, that’s really hard to

break, and they definitely don’t give up, so it’s going to be an 80-90 minute game I reckon.” If the game is so tight as to require extra time, that won’t daunt Riccarton, who upset Hornby 3026 in the minor semi-final, scoring the only try in the extra period, after the scores were locked 26-all after 80 minutes. Riccarton coach Chris Hansen said it had been pretty easy for his team to refocus. “That was a bit of a bonus winning it like that – we didn’t plan to come from behind. “By Tuesday night, they’d got it out of their system and were focused on this Saturday’s game.” He said Papanui would be especially dangerous, coming off the back of last weekend’s hiding. “(They) won’t play like that again. They’re always going to be dangerous, and we’ve always taken them as being a dangerous team. “It’s basically to be the best, we have to beat the best, and that’s what we’re doing – we’re playing against the best and it’s up to us to put it on the park.” The winner of tomorrow’s game will play Linwood in next Sunday’s grand final at AMI Stadium.
