Rugby clubs working to discourage drink driving BY TOM DOUDNEY AND GABRIELLE STUART A major police drink driving campaign is targeting rural Canterbury rugby players and supporters, but Selwyn clubs say their players are already behaving responsibly. The campaign, which starts this week, will see police visiting or speaking with rugby club
officials, team captains and players. Enforcement measures will include visiting clubs after matches and putting checkpoints on roads nearby. Darfield Rugby Club president Brent Chamberlain said the club did a lot to discourage drink driving. Measures included providing a courtesy van, stocking low alcohol beers (which were proving popular)
and non-alcoholic drinks, sometimes organising a bus to get players to and from games, and inviting police in to talk to players on an annual basis. “As a president, you are always concerned about the safety of all your club community and the last thing we want is for someone to lose their licence, or an injury or fatality,” Mr Chamberlain said.
Lincoln president Kym Townsend said the club didn’t have any “hard and fast” rules in place but it had a good culture in regards to drink driving. “I don’t think we have ever really had a problem with it and, touch wood, I hope we never have to go through what those guys in North Otago had to go through.” •Turn to page 2

Rolleston recently but it was all for a good cause. A fundraiser was held for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, with the 83 people attending dressed in pink. They raised $1400 for the organisation and a further $100 for Breast Cancer Support. The Rock Rolleston donated $5 from every meal and $1 from every drink ordered for the cause. There were also raffles, auctions, a quiz and best dressed competitions. The event was organised by the Selwyn Breast Cancer Support Group. Canterbury road policing manager Al Stewart said police needed to act before they were left “scraping kids off the road”. Inspector Stewart said 17 to 24-year-old males were disproportionately represented in statistics, and drink-driving seemed to be a greater problem in rural areas than in the city. If the campaign is effective, police could run similar campaigns targeting other sports groups, like cricket teams over summer.

Water restrictions lifted
Watering restrictions have now been lifted for properties connected to the West Melton water supply. They were in place due to Environment Canterbury restrictions on ground water take. Ground water levels are now recovering, allowing the restrictions to be lifted.

Residents push for underpass BY TOM DOUDNEY West Melton residents are hoping that an underpass expected to provide safe crossing under State Highway 73 will not be scrapped. Gillman Wheelans is developing the 163-lot Wilfield subdivision on the south side of West Melton. Work on the first 74 lots has begun but before beginning stage two, the company must agree on a corridor management plan with the New Zealand Transport Agency and the district council. A pedestrian underpass under the state highway must be part of that plan unless all three parties agree on an alternative provision. A pedestrian crossing with traffic lights, near the Weedons Ross Rd
intersection, has been discussed as one such alternative. West Melton Residents’ Association chairman Jeff Waters said an underpass remained the preferred option of residents. “One thing is for sure – no one has ever been run over walking through an underpass.” The ability to get West Melton School children over the busy road to the domain to use the sports field and community centre was one of the major issues that needed to be resolved. Principal Sue Jackson said an underpass seemed the safest option. Although the school had its own facilities, the growing roll (currently at 415) and the planned new sport and leisure facility to be
built at the domain meant there would be greater incentive to make more use of it in the future. “Our roll is predicted to get to 600 in the next few years, so we will be using that facility and the issue then will be how do we get them across the main road safely?” Gillman Wheelans director Hamish Wheelans said the company was not turning a blind eye to residents’ concerns but was aware of a range of different views from the community on whether an underpass was the best option. “We haven’t ruled out the underpass and it hasn’t been ruled in as a must have item either, so it’s on the table as part of the corridor management plan,” he said.
“Once NZTA, Selwyn District Council and ourselves have reached a position that we all agree is a good outcome, then that corridor management plan will go out for some sort of consultation.”
“West Melton is a great little town which will continue to grow in a positive manner. Whatever we do along the corridor we want to make sure it fits in with that.”
A four-wheel motor-cycle was stolen from a Pannetts Rd farm in the Springston South area on Sunday night or yesterday morning. The farmer noticed the quad was missing when he came out to milk the cows in the morning and found it was not in the dairy shed where it had been stored. Constable Mike Harker said the thief or thieves had made their way past older and less expensive machines first. Nothing else had been taken and there was no damage to property. The missing quad is a red and black Honda TRX420. Anyone with information can phone the Lincoln police on 325 2800.

A visit to the largest and most well-known particle physics laboratory in the world, will be the highlight of a three-week programme in Europe for one enthusiastic science student. George Watson, 17, from Darfield High School has been selected to attend the CERN Discovery Programme in the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland this July and August. CERN, or the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is perhaps best known for operating the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator, at Geneva, Switzerland, where sub-atomic particles are smashed together at close to light-speed. The Geneva laboratory will be the final stop on George’s trip, which will begin with two weeks at the London International Youth Science Forum. The forum will include lectures and demonstrations from leading scientists, visits to important science and research sites.

George who lives in West Melton was one of two students awarded the Roy Geddes Award, from the 180 who attended the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum in Auckland in January. Winning the award meant he was selected and granted $6500 for the trip. George said he felt incredibly privileged to be going. “I am super enthused about science – it’s exciting and interesting, and there’s always something new to learn,” he said. The district council, The Rotary Club of Hornby and The Royal Society of New Zealand have all granted him funding for the trip and George has raised some money himself through website design. “I now have enough money to cover my costs, but I still hope to earn some more spending money,” he said.

Busy student earns Young Totara Award A Lincoln University student has been presented with the Young Totara Award by the Rotary Club of Papanui. Sophie Gaulter (right) received the award for demonstrating initiative and leadership and for making a significant contribution to her community. The 18-year-old completed her final year of school last year where she was a prefect. In the same year she travelled to China under a young leaders UN scholarship. In 2013 she was among a group of students who travelled to Cambodia to work
with children in orphanages and in the slums. Miss Gaulter was also a member of the St Andrew’s College Pipe Band which won a world championship. She has coached junior sports and been involved in various community projects and groups over the years. Miss Gaulter was selected for regional age group hockey teams for a number of years which gained her a premier women’s hockey title with High School Old Boys last year. She was also selected in the New Zealand under-21 Maori women’s hockey team last year.

Afternoon tea treat part of pupils’ challenge Ladbrooks Women’s Institute was recently treated to an afternoon tea made and served by 15 senior pupils from Ladbrooks School. The pupils, aged between 11 and 13, are taking part in the William Pike Challenge Award, which requires them to complete 20 hours of community service. The women presented a cheque to the pupils to donate to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation as May was the month when Pink Ribbon Breakfast fundraising events were held. The cakes all had pink icing and the cup cakes had the pink ribbon logo on each. Before afternoon tea was served, four pupils gave the ladies a

Soldiers of Selwyn Soldiers killed during action Celebrating those who died in World War 1 With SelWyn librarieS www.selwynlibrary.co.nz
World War 1 claimed the lives of about 18,000 New Zealand soldiers, while a further 41,000 were injured or fell ill. To honour those from Selwyn, a project was undertaken by volunteer historian Lynda Seaton on behalf of Selwyn Libraries to identify, research and record every soldier whose name was recorded on a World War 1 memorial in the district.To mark the centenary of the conflict, the Selwyn Times continues its weekly series, Soldiers of Selwyn. • Rifleman William Simon Gillanders William Simon Gillanders was born at Darfield on June 3, 1881, to Hector and May Gillanders. Gillanders worked for some time in the office of the Christchurch Press Company. He was farming at Waddington until he bought the Cotswold Hills run in North Canterbury, where he was a sheep farmer. He married Mary Anne Reid in December, 1916, three months prior to enlisting on February 9, 1917. Gillanders was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 28th Reinforcements, J Company, and embarked for England on July 26. He arrived in Devonport on September 24 and was killed in an accident en-route from Devonport to Sling Camp on the same day, aged 36. He was one of 10 soldiers killed when they alighted from the troop train at Bere Ferrers mistaking it for the planned stop at Exeter where food was to be distributed. Some of the soldiers were standing on the track just as the Waterlooto-Plymouth Express rounded the sharp curve on its entry into Bere Ferrers. Gillanders and the other New
Zealanders killed in the Devon railway disaster were buried in the Corporation Cemetery at Egg Buckland, outside Plymouth. A brass memorial plaque was installed in the church of St Andrew at Bere Ferrers and there is also a stone slab commemorating the soldiers on the plinth of the village war memorial. In New Zealand, Gillanders is remembered on the Malvern County and Sheffield war memorials. • Private Francis James Page Francis James Page, also known as Frank, was born on September 15, 1896, at Springston to James and Mary Page, of Tai Tapu. He worked as a farm labourer at Tai Tapu and had previous military experience with the Territorials in the 13th Regiment. Page enlisted on December 20, 1914, and left with the 3rd Reinforcements for Suez on February 14, 1915. He joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli on May 9 and survived the fighting until falling ill with typhoid at Gaba Tepe. He was sent to hospital at Alexandria on July 3, then transferred
to the convalescent camp at Port Said on August 7 before being invalided home to New Zealand on September 23. From October, Page was given two months home leave before returning to duty on January 30, 1916, this time with the 10th Reinforcements of the Canterbury Infantry, and sailing with them in March. He arrived at Etaples on April 24, and joined the 2nd Battalion Canterbury Regiment at Armentiers on May 18. On September 21, Page suffered a gunshot wound to his left forearm. He was admitted to No 11 Stationary Hospital at Rouen and then sent to England where he was admitted to the No 1 New Zealand Hospital at Brockenhurst on September 27. After almost three months, including time at the convalescent depot at Hornchurch, he was sent to No 3 NZ General Hospital at Codford, Salisbury Plain on January 22, 1917. He was discharged on April 28 and two months later he was well enough to be attached to the 4th Reserve Battalion at Sling Camp. Page finally arrived back in Etaples in July, re-joining his unit in the field on August 11. He was killed in action on September 29, 1917, near Ypres, aged 21. Page is buried in the Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium, and remembered on the Tai Tapu and Springston war memorials. • Private Norman William Scarlett Norman William Scarlett was born on October 5, 1896, at Palmerston North, to Joseph and Mary Scarlett. He was a farm labourer at Halswell

Scarlett enlisted on November 20, 1916, and was assigned to the 21st Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company, embarking for Devonport on January 19, 1917. He arrived at Etaples on June 8 and joined the 2nd Battalion, 12th Company of the Canterbury Infantry, in the field on June 25. Scarlett was killed in action on September 30, 1917, and buried near where he fell. The 2nd Battalion had arrived at the old German front line at Wieltje, two miles north-east of Ypres, on September 28, and over the next two nights took over the whole of the left sub-sector of the front line from the 178th Brigade. After the war the Commonwealth War Graves Commission exhumed Scarlett’s remains from his isolated grave and he was buried in Potijze Chateau Grounds Cemetery, Belgium. His name is on the Prebbleton War Memorial. • Private Peter Duncan Campbell Peter Duncan Campbell was born at Killinchy on November 10, 1896, to James Duncan and Margaret Campbell. He was working for his father doing contracting work and had some previous military experience with the General Training section. Campbell enlisted on November 23, 1916, and was assigned to the 24th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Regiment, C Company. He embarked for Devonport on April 26. He arrived at Etaples on September 9 and joined the 1st Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, 13th Company, in the field on

September 16. On October 1, 1917, he was wounded and died, aged 18, at the Dressing Station. The battalion had been holding the front line west of Ypres. Campbell is buried in the Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No 3 and remembered on the Ellesmere County War Memorial’s Leeston plaque. • Private John O’Boyle John O’Boyle was born at Doyleston on February 11, 1876, to James and Mary Anne O’Boyle. He worked as a farm labourer at Irwell and had previous military experience as a non-commissioned officer for five years with the Ellesmere Guards. However, he had previously been rejected for war service owing to deafness and short-sightness. Nevertheless when conscription had been introduced on 1st August 1916 , his name had come up in the 24th Ballot. O’Boyle enlisted on December 14, 1916, and was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, Reinforcements, G Company. He embarked for England on March 14, 1917. He arrived at Etaples on July 10 and was posted to the 1st Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, 2nd Company, joining them in the field on August 10. O’Boyle was killed in action on October 1, 1917, aged 41, while his battalion held the front line against the Germans near Ypres. He was buried near where he fell 160 yards west of Pommern Castle, between Pommern Castle and Baak Farm. However, in the much fought over ground his grave site became lost and his body could not be retrieved after the war. His name is on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing, Ypres, as well as the Ellesmere County War Memorial’s Leeston plaque and the Doyleston War Memorial.

in France and Belgium Railways as the stationmaster at Lincoln in 1909, and remained in that position until he left to join the Expeditionary Force. He had considerable military experience as he had been acting Captain of the Napier Rifles at the time of the Boer War and was Captain of the Canterbury Railway Engineers. For a number of years he was heavily involved in the community with organisations including the District High School Committee, Presbyterian Church and the public library. He was a prominent Freemason, being a past master and a member of the Canterbury Provincial Lodge and one of the founders of the Winton Lodge. Graham enlisted on October 17, 1916, and was assigned to the 25th Reinforcements and embarked for England on April 26, 1917. After arrival, he was posted to the Canterbury Infantry and, after training, arrived at Etaples on September 17, joining the division in the field on the September 29. A mere five days later, on October 4, he suffered a gunshot wound to the head, with a compressed skull fracture, during the Battle of Broodseinde near Ypres in Flanders. Graham was taken by field ambulance to the casualty clearing station and then on to hospital behind the lines at the Duchess of Westminster Hospital at Le Touquet. He died there three days later of meningitis, aged 42. Graham is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, and remembered on the Lincoln Roll of Honour.

church, to Stephen and Mary Hubbard. He worked as a fellmonger, removing sheep’s wool or the hair of other animals in preparation for tanning, at Palmerston North. Hubbard enlisted on October 13, 1916, and was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry, 22nd Reinforcements. He was promoted to Corporal on November 2 and embarked for England on February 12, 1917. In Plymouth, he reverted to Lance Corporal and was admitted to hospital at Tidworth suffering from pneumonia on May 25. Almost a month later he was moved to No 3 General Hospital at Codford and then to convalesce at Hornchurch. After three weeks, he was considered well enough for action and released from hospital. Hubbard left for France, arriving at Etaples on August 20 and being posted to the 1st Company, 3rd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment. He joined them in the field on August 29. At his own request he reverted to a Private on September 17 and rejoined the ranks. Hubbard was killed in action on October 4, 1917, aged 21. During the fighting at Gravenstafel Spur, one of two spurs on the ridge above Passchendaele, the battalion reached Abraham Heights and came under direct machine-gun fire from the high ground to the north and northeast. During this time the troops lying in the open suffered many casualties. Hubbard’s body was not found or identified and his name is on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing, as well as the Greenpark Memorial.
• Private William Louis McKenzie William Louis McKenzie was born on May 1, 1885, at Dunsandel, to Samuel and Janet McKenzie. At 19 he joined the railway service and served mainly at Christchurch but finally at Wellington as a guard. He had previous military experience with the ‘N’ Battery at Lyttelton. McKenzie enlisted on November 16, 1916, and was assigned to the 25th Reinforcements of the Wellington Infantry Regiment, for which he had volunteered, but was then transferred to the 24th. He embarked for Devonport on April 5, 1917. He arrived at Etaples on July 9 and was posted to 7th Company on July 24. On October 4 he was reported wounded and later posted as missing. Finally, on November 25, a court of inquiry declared him to have been killed in action during the fighting at Passchendaele, aged 32. His section commander at the time reported that he was with McKenzie when he was wounded in the forehead and that McKenzie said to him “come over here, I am dying” but that was the last he saw of him. • 2nd Lieutenant Alexander Deans Alexander Deans was born at Riccarton on November 23, 1890, to John and Catherine Edith Deans. In 1909 he was vicecaptain of the Christchurch Boys’ High School rugby XV and captain of the cricket XI. He also
won the senior free-hand drawing prize and served four years with Christchurch Boys’ High School Cadets. Deans continued his military interest and was one of the most active members of the 1st Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry) holding the rank of First Lieutenant in 1916. Before enlisting, on May 30, 1916, he was farming at Homebush. He was married to Nora nee Knight and father of two children, the youngest being barely threemonths-old. Deans was promoted to Lieutenant on July 3 and embarked for Devonport on January 19, 1917, with the 3rd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment. In France, he was detached to the school of instruction in the field on June 17, 1917 for a one week course, re-joining his unit on June 24. Deans was first reported wounded in action on October 4 but later reported killed, aged 27. The New Zealand Division was taking part in the Battle of Broodseinde, tasked with seizing part of the Broodseinde Ridge called Gravenstafel Spur. On that day, the New Zealand soldiers overwhelmed German forward positions, captured 1100 prisoners and helped to extend the front line eastwards. This was achieved at a cost of 1700 casualties, including 350 deaths. Deans’ body was not recovered or identified and his name is on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing, as well as the Malvern County and Sheffield war memorials.

• John Ira Howells John Ira Howells was born to John Henry Brown and Sarah Ann Howells on January 31, 1877, at Blaenavon, Wales. Before emigrating to New Zealand via Australia in 1913, he worked as a timberman and was for some years a member of the Broad St Baptist Chapel. Howells was working for New Zealand railways at Coalgate before enlisting on July 25, 1916, and being assigned to the 19th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company. He arrived at Etaples on March 3. He was posted to 13th Company, 1st Battalion, Canterbury Infantry and joined them in the field on May 25. Howells was killed in action on October 2, 1917, aged 30, while his battalion held the front line against the Germans near Ypres. His Lieutenant described him as one “of the best men I had in my platoon.” In a strange coincidence his brother, Constantine Charles Brown, who had joined the British Navy, was also killed on the same day. He was serving on the HMS Drake when the ship was torpedoed. Howells’ body was not found or identified and his name is on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing, as well as the Malvern County and South Malvern war memorials.

BY FRASER WALKER-PEARCE Former Lincoln High School student, Mitchell Dunshea, hopes to impress ITM Cup and Super Rugby coaches, when he represents New Zealand at the Under-20 Rugby World Cup in Italy next month. Dunshea (right), 19, sees this tournament as a great platform to impress, and hopes to snare himself a professional contract at the end of the tournament. “Yeah, I’m so stoked to be a part of the team, I can’t wait.” He missed out on the New Zealand secondary schools team last year, but this didn’t dishearten him. “No I didn’t make it (the NZSS team), but it didn’t really matter. It wasn’t a big deal for me.” His goal has always been the black jersey. At the end of last year, he received a call-up to the New Zealand under-20 wider training squad, consisting of the country’s 51 best youngsters, before being named in the World Cup squad earlier this month. They will have to navigate a competitive Pool C, against Scotland, Argentina and Ireland in order to qualify for the semi-finals. Dunshea said: “We’re going there to win, to take the trophy. But we also want to enjoy our time.” Born in Hamilton, Dunshea moved with his family at a young age to Lincoln and, “never looked back.” He started playing rugby at the age of five for Lincoln, then Springston, before Lincoln High School, then moving to Lincoln University’s lineup.

Its popularity and high customer volume particularly on Friday nights has led owner Dave Whalley to begin working on new opportunities and expansion plans not just in product innovations like barista made coffee at the drive-through but also for larger facilities.

As part of the Selwyn community McDonald’s Rolleston has an active involvement with many local groups including sports and schools. An example is the Encouragement Awards that recognise children who achieve individual sporting fetes such as catching or kicking the ball for the first time. GRASSROOTS SPORT Lincoln continued its perfect start to the Selwyn netball competition with a 43-36 win over Halswell RL A. Rolleston had a 13-goal, 52-39 win over Broadfield to keep them just behind Lincoln in second on the table and Broadfield winless at the bottom. In the final game of the round Halswell RL MA trounced West Melton 41-23. The senior club rugby round-robin wrapped up on Saturday with the quarter-finalists decided for the combined competition. Waihora were the best placed of the Selwyn sides after topping section two and will host Celtic at Tai Tapu. Southbridge and Burnham/Dunsadel/Irwell were the other Selwyn sides to make the quarters with the other five teams coming from north and mid Canterbury. Darfield and Lincoln will face-off in the trophy semi-final and West Melton will host Prebbleton in the plate. Rolleston in its first season of senior rugby will fight for the plaque and take on Hornby at Rolleston Reserve.

Council Services on Queen’s Birthday Monday Rubbish and recycling will be collected as normal on Queen’s Birthday, Monday 1 June. Pines Resource Recovery Park is open from 10am-4pm. Council service centres and libraries, the Rolleston Community Centre and Lincoln Event Centre are closed on Monday 1 June. Libraries are open from 9.30am-12.30pm on Saturday 30 May as normal. The Selwyn Aquatic Centre is open from 8am-8pm from Saturday 30 May – Monday 1 June.
Exercise your dog Did you know that there are over 25 reserve areas where dogs can be exercised in Selwyn? If you’ve visited your own park plenty of times, you could try somewhere different - there are lots of pleasant scenic spots to choose from. Dogs can be exercised either on a leash or off leash in these areas but dogs must be under control. Under control means that the dog obeys commands and doesn’t bother or cause a nuisance to other people or dogs. If you’re outdoors please remember that dogs are not allowed in schools, in skate parks, or within five metres of events on sportsfields or reserves. They are also not allowed in playgrounds or within five metres of a playground.
Winter officially begins on 1 June and it brings more challenging driving conditions including rain, fog, ice on the roads, and often snow.
Daylight hours are also shorter, and visibility is often poor during the morning and evening rush hours when many people are on the roads. “During winter, allowing extra time for journeys so you can defrost your car before starting and travelling more slowly on wet or icy roads is very important,” says Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning. “If visibility is poor in the morning or evening or due to gloomy conditions or fog, putting your lights on will make your vehicle more visible to others and will make your journey much safer.”

“Driving too fast on wet or icy roads can easily lead to a crash, especially on bends,” she says. If you travel in the morning or evening in frosty conditions, reduce your speed as ice is likely to be present, and see our driving tips below. Ice can also be a problem during the daytime on patches of road shaded by trees or fences, so watch out for this and reduce your speed before entering these areas.

Driving tips for winter: Driving in the wet: stopping distances nearly double on wet roads. You need to: · Slow down and keep a generous distance from the car in front of you · The two-second rule should be a four second rule · Be extra vigilant – take corners slowly. After snow melts, there is likely to be ice, especially in shaded places and bridges · You should also carry chains, know how to fit them and use them when necessary Driving in fog: turn on your headlights, not just your park lights. You should also: · Reduce your speed as visibility is poor and keep a large following distance · Keep your headlamps on low (dip) beam, as high beam will reflect off fog and produce glare Only use fog lamps when visibility is severely reduced. It is illegal to use fog lamps in clear conditions as they can dazzle other drivers. Driving with sun strike: sunstrike generally occurs early morning and late afternoon. Familiarise yourself with the areas where it happens and take more care at these locations. Always keep your windscreen clean, inside and out, and reduce your speed.

Water restrictions lifted for West Melton and Springfield Watering restrictions have now been lifted for properties connected to the West Melton water supply. Restrictions were in place due to Environment Canterbury restrictions on groundwater take for bores supplying West Melton. Ground water levels are now recovering, allowing the restrictions to be lifted. Watering restrictions have also been lifted for properties connected to the Springfield supply. Restrictions were in place as the town is supplied by treated water from the Kowai River and the river was experiencing low flows due to weather conditions. River levels have now risen, enabling the restrictions to be lifted. The lifting of restrictions mean that lawns and gardens may be watered at any time. The Council still encourages property owners to water lawns and gardens after 9pm and before 6am where possible, as this is the time of lowest water use and also provides the best opportunity for water to soak into the ground. We appreciate your cooperation while restrictions were in place.

New health centre to service growing area
T
he Integrated Health Centre in Halswell, Longhurst Health, which opened in mid-December 2014, is designed to offer a wide spectrum of health services to residents of this rapidly expanding area of the city. Even before the earthquakes prompted people to move from city suburbs, Halswell and Rolleston were attracting growing numbers of new residents. Halswellhealth in Ensign Street had been providing health services to the community for over 40 years, but with the growth in
the southwest area of the city over the last 10 years, it had become evident that larger premises were required, practice manager Kevin Smith says. “We realised the limits on the existing site, so the partners looked at finding new premises that would give Halswellhealth the opportunity to have a second site.” A site was purchased in the Longhurst subdivision in 2012 for the new facility to be built, and the two local pharmacists and a dentist from the Halswell Dental Centre

joined the project. Construction began at the end of 2013, with the new centre opening on December 15, 2014. Mr Smith says everyone is thrilled with how it is working out and it is all they hoped it would be. “The doctors and nurses work at both sites, with all the administration being done at Ensign St.” The new medical centre has six doctors’ consulting rooms, five nurse/consulting rooms, and a three-bay treatment area where services such as flu vaccinations, blood pressure tests and other services requiring less privacy are carried out. There is also a minor surgery room where the doctors can undertake minor surgical procedures. “The new centre also gives us the opportunity to work with other specialist colleagues. We have been joined by an
ophthalmologist and gynecologists, and an anesthetist completing pre-op assessments. Other medical specialists will also be joining us. We are enjoying working with the pharmacy and dentist both in the same building.” The process of completing a fit-out for an allied health team on the first floor of the building is underway. This will be home to a physiotherapist, hand therapist, chiropractor, podiatrist, clinical psychologist and an acupuncturist. While this is being completed, they will work from within the general practice. Other tenants of the building are Nurse Maude and Child Youth and Family. “The ground floor is home to a café which is due to open in the next few weeks and will add to the ambience of our modern and attractive complex,” Mr Smith says.

We weren’t meant to spend long periods of every day hunched over our desks, gazing at computer screens - or even lounging on the sofa glued to the television. There are many studies that show prolonged sitting (greater than 20 to 30 minutes at a time) squeezes water out of the spinal disc causing the disc to become dehydrated and vulnerable to strain. This pressure on the spine is increased in the sitting position due to the effect of gravity pushing down on it. Forces on the discs are four times more in the sitting position than in a lying position and twice that of a standing position. As such, prolonged sitting can cause adverse loading of the discs and swelling in the joints. Both of these are extremely painful. If you are suffering from headaches, migraines, back pain, wrist pain, arm pain, or sciatic pain all of these may be related to your sitting posture. Movement is key because the discs in our vertebrae are important shock absorbers. When we’re locked in one position, such as sitting, we’re starving the disks of nutrients. And if we’re not moving, everything stagnates.
Sitting also tightens and shortens the psoas—the strong hip flexor—which can affect how the pelvis rotates and increases the load on the low back. The gluteal muscles also stretch out in this sitting position and because they’re not being used they turn off and get weaker (flabbier!). Our social life often involves sitting too - over coffee or dinner, in the movies or simply sitting around chatting. So try to: Change your position. It’s the single best thing you can do. Stand up every 15 to 30 minutes and clasp your hands behind your back. Take a phone call standing instead of sitting or simply straighten up. You could even set a reminder on your phone reminding you to move. Use a lumbar roll or a rolled up towel, about 6 inches in diameter. Lumbar rolls help maintain the natural curve of the back. You can use them in a car or the office.

Rachel Vogan looks at vegetable crops with winter soups in mind AS THE days shorten and the air temperatures adopt that wintry chill, I look forward to spending time nestled up indoors with a hearty bowl of home-made soup. When it comes to soups there are few rules; anything goes. In my house, core staple ingredients do not vary a lot for vegetable soup. For meaty concoctions, the base of them depends on what left-over roast meat we have, or if I have bacon bones. I always make sure to keep plenty of potatoes, pumpkin, onions and garlic aside especially for soup. Crops still in the ground, but destined for the soup pot, include parsnip, celeriac, carrots, kumara, turnips, swede and beetroot. All of these crops keep well in the soil and do actually taste better once a few frosts have sweetened the sugars in the roots. Have you ever tried eating carrot tops? They are lovely and rather sweet, I use these in green vegetable soups and as a garnish, or I roast them. With leafy crops, you cannot go

Here, cavolo nero has been tucked into bed with plenty of straw. past celery as a stalwart, either as a base flavour or a main ingredient, and all parts of the plant can be used. The foliage is particularly nice in clear Asian-style broths as it has a less intense flavour. Celery is a happy campaigner, growing in tubs and planters over winter. To get the best results, plant in rich vegetable mix, as they love plenty of food. Remember, you can harvest it stalk by stalk, and having it planted near the house will remind you to use it! Leeks come into their own over the coldest months, and this is another crop where everything, roots and all, can be eaten. A good
way to make leeks go a bit further is to slice up the whole plant then plunge it into a bucket of water. All the soil will fall out and you can then use a sieve to strain out all the foliage. For a twist on the trusty leek and potato soup, try roasting the leeks first, it adds a marvellous depth of flavour. Anchor soup crops also include everything in the brassica family; cabbage, cauli, broccoli, kale, cavolo nero, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, broccolini, and Romanesco. A note to remember with the cabbage family is all its members ferment rather quickly, so any soup left on the stove top will only keep for a
couple of days, a day or two longer in the fridge. Spinach, silver beet, parcel and Florence fennel can all be planted now and used as go-to fillers for the stock pot. Courgettes and marrows are great for the soup pot, too. The flavour of these intensifies if they are barbecued first. These store for a month or two at most, and do not freeze that well. All the starchy crops like spuds, kumara, yams, parsnip and pumpkin thicken soups, and are useful to use instead of grain or flour-based thickening ingredients. Corn freezes really well. Cook
on the cob, remove the kernels and then freeze in free-flow bags. Tomato soup is a family favourite for many. It is always tastiest made with well-ripened tomatoes, rather than half ripe or green ones, and baking or roasting certainly helps in the flavour department. Once made it freezes well. The easiest way to store soup is to use sealable freezer bags. Once soup is cold, divide it into portion sizes. Lie bags flat in an icecream container flat until frozen, then stack away. This makes a wonderful quick-lunch option and an easy dinner idea.

Wonderful roses Roses are a stand out in any garden and provide a welcome burst of colour amongst the greenery. Most garden centres will be getting new stocks of roses in soon, so head to your local garden centre to see what is on offer. To make things easier for you come planting time, prepare your gardens now. Work some organic compost and organic fertiliser such as sheep pellets through your soil. By doing this now, you will save yourself time, and you can get on with planting the roses in the ground as soon as you have bought them. Preparation is key. One important thing to remember is: If you are putting the time, effort and money into planting roses, you want to ensure you are planting them into top quality mix to give them a healthy growing environment. If you are planting into pots, use a mix such as Patio Plus with all the essential nutrients for healthy plant growth and development.

Silverbeet – the new spinach BY TOD PALENSKI
Its cousin spinach may be more popular with foodies these days, but did you know silverbeet can be used in pretty much the same way – adding goodness to soups, pies, lasagne, pizza and dips? In my book, it’s also much easier to grow and prepare than its leafy green relative. Packed full of vitamins, this long-stemmed beauty is a great companion plant too, easily filling empty or tight spots in your vege garden. In fact, I’m often encouraging people to plant silverbeet in between rows of brassicas like broccoli or cauliflower because it’s ready to harvest earlier and it grows tall, rather than out. The key to planting silverbeet is making sure your soil is well drained. If it’s a bit sluggish, try building it up into mounds. Or if you’re using a pot, make sure you use a good potting mix. Speaking of pots, I find they’re perfect for playing host to rainbow beet. That’s right; silverbeet doesn’t just come in bog-standard green and white. The rainbow variety boasts coloured stalks, and leaves in differing shades of green which can really make a statement on your deck or patio – a healthy one at

that. With coloured beet being a bit more sensitive than traditional silverbeet, pots also help keep the frost at bay, and allow you to position the plants for full sun. Whichever variety you decide to go with, planting beet is easy. Dig a little hole and place the seedling inside. Whether you’re planting them in your garden or pots, simply space the seedlings around 20cm apart. From here they pretty
much tend to look after themselves. Your silverbeet will be ready to harvest in around eight weeks if your soil is well-composted and free draining, or up to 12 weeks if it’s a bit sluggish. Try harvesting your coloured beet when it’s still young and add it to a spinach salad. Not only will it taste great, you’ll create a real family gettogether for the two leafy cousins.

o I’m now over halfway through the Shape Shifter programme and can acknowledge it has certainly become a part of my life. My focus has been wellness and achieving a balanced lifestyle. I’ve certainly had to to face quite a few challenges physically and on a stressful personal front, including juggling time to exercise regularly. Along the way I managed to get a bit carried away in the Zumba class and caused some injury to my achilles. With the supportive help of Penelope Sole, she mixed up my gym exercises to avoid any further strain and has been invaluable. I’m just only now starting back in the group exercise classes and focusing

ell halfway through, and I feel things are going great, the scales are dropping, the food choices are changing and it’s all not been too hard with the great support we have. I am currently training towards the Christchurch half marathon on May 31, 2015. I am really looking forward to it and will be my second half marathon. Making exercise a regular thing in the daily/weekly timetable has been the hardest thing to change so far, and I think I’m the only one on the program who doesn’t have kids to fit around! A daily food dairy is helping to keep myself honest and helping to look at what I did eat or what I could have chosen instead.

I have developed a certain fondness for exercise, have more energy, positivity, mental clarity and overall improved wellbeing. There has certainly been a big swing towards eating real whole foods. It hasn’t been all carrot sticks and celery. There have been some hiccups, especially when I’ve been out at friends’ houses. The weekly catch-up with Sally has been invaluable. She always has advice and recommendations for any situation or challenges. So the journey towards wellbeing continues one day at a time.
Sally has just released a food app (gohmee) that will be able to help us all. The idea of having everything we need there in our hands instead of having to record it on a paper and being able to check daily progress quickly while on the move is great. I look forward to using it.

lmost halfway through the regime now and there has certainly been a difference in my lifestyle. I began this crusade initially to lose some weight and get onto some sort of regular exercise plan. I wouldn’t say that it has been a huge life-changing experience but I am certainly more aware of what and how much goes in the gob and am fitter than what I have been for years. To date I have lost about 3kg but it feels like 10kg because of the way my body has toned. Grant from Franks Brothers gym enjoys putting me through my paces, especially
the assault bike phase! He has managed to convince me that crossfit is the way to go. I have endured several sessions, and my body certainly tells me that I have had a workout but, as they say, no pain no gain. I am sure I will start to enjoy it once my body adapts to the torture. Sally is very supportive and has provided some very informative reading material which has been helpful along the journey. The most rewarding part of this programme is that people are starting to notice that I have lost weight, which is a huge confidence boost and keeps me on track.

Q: Why did you join? Client 1: Age, time, food and priority are the biggest challenges. Being in the public eye (Police Force) keeping healthy and fit seems to be expected from the community. Life gets busy and sometimes something else comes along in life and your fitness gets put on the backburner or you’re a bit tired from a long shift and put exercise off. I’m really enjoying it so far. Q. What are you enjoying most? Client 1: To be honest I’m finding the physical side of it great and seeing results. I know I’m toning up and am feeling good. The hardest bit is still the food, which is still a struggle although I eat well enough I’m still having too much. Client 2: Probably the weights best as have never done them before. Have lost some weight around waist and chest, and toned up a little.
Q. Have you discovered anything you didn’t know? Client 1: Not really. I’ve always known more output and less input will produce results and eating the wrong food groups will mean you gain weight. Client 2: Diet-wise I have learnt to have a bigger healthy breakfast, smaller lunch and find I am not as hungry in between. Q. What has changed for you? Client 1: The only real change is that I now try to avoid all the crappy food especially when I’m tired, and that I’m really enjoying the exercise endorphins you get after completing either some cardio or weights. Client 2: Interesting that with only a small adjustment to my diet and the gym work, I have not had to change my lifestyle much to lose weight and tone up a little. I’m certainly not hungry all the time.

The general public is to be advised that a NZ Army Exercise will be conducted in the West Melton Rifle Range area over the period 26-28 May 2015. The exercise will involve personnel of the 2/1 RNZIR from, Burnham Military Camp. The exercise will involve up to 100 personnel. Training will involve soldiers conducting live firing by day and conducting High Explosives weapons training at West Melton Rifle Range. High Explosives will be used between 10.00am and 4.30pm over the exercise period.

id you know that 95 per cent of the heat from open fireplaces goes up the chimney? A damning statistic that has thankfully kicked this home-heating habit. These days, there are a variety of ways to efficiently heat our homes, from pellet fires to groundsource heat pumps. But, where to start and what are some of the considerations when building new? The most popular forms of home heating right now are wood fires and heat pumps. Heat pumps work by converting cool air to warm,
and warm air to cool, in a similar way to a fridge. They’re best suited to warmer climates, and can be efficient (check their energy star rating) as they deliver one-and-a-half to three times more heat energy than the electricity consumed by doing so. However, they need to be installed correctly, be at the right size and capacity for each room heated, and regularly maintained. Groundsource heat pumps work a little differently. They harness the sun’s free energy stored underground and after using electricity to increase the temperature a little, this warmth
is then distributed throughout your home, normally via radiators or in-slab pipes. When installed and operating correctly, these systems are more efficient than air-source heat pumps, because ground temperatures remain reasonably stable and are higher than the mean air temperature (used by air-source heat pumps) in winter and lower in summer. Ground-source heat pumps suit new homes as fitting into existing structures sustainable solutions can be costly and suit colder climates. These systems don’t come into problems such as freezing during sub-zero conditions, nor do they burn any fuel or generate smoke particles – a big plus for Cantabrians. Pellet fires are another option. Burning wood is considered carbon neutral, as the carbon emitted during burning is the same as if the tree decomposed naturally. The wood pellets are often made from waste wood, but depending on where the pellets are sourced, there may be additional emissions created during manufacture
and transport. Pellet fires don’t require the cutting of wood, can include timers and thermostat controls and are easier to operate than wood burners. As with heat pumps, they require electricity and have electrical parts that may require maintenance. They also rely on the manufacture and supply of wood pellets. For some, the radiant heat from a wood fire just can’t be beaten. Modern wood fires are cheap to run (close to zero if you have a free wood supply) and can also produce free hot water using a wetback. For wood fires to work efficiently, however, you must use dry (untreated) wood, preferably cut to the right size and regularly maintain your fireplace. This reduces the amount of ultrafine pollution entering the atmosphere, and creates higher burning temperatures. Whichever way you heat your home, 15 per cent of that heat can be lost through windows, much more when there are draughts. So, install the highest spec double glazing you can afford, such as thermally broken windows coupled with low E-glass (low emissivity). E-glass is coated with a substance that allows short wave solar energy through (heat from the sun), but prevents long-wave energy (from heating systems) escaping to the outside.
