Christchurch contemporary jewellery gallery THE NATIONAL has relocated from its former temporary home in NG on Madras, to 241 Moorhouse Avenue next to neighbouring gallery, Chambers 241. The opening exhibition, to serendipitously coincide with the gallery’s grand reopening, was the beloved ‘grandfather of
contemporary jewellery’, former Cantabrian Kobi Bosshard in a joint showcase with his former apprentice Peter McKay. This narrow, white shoebox-sized space - transformed only days before from a dingy garage - was fizzing with the who’s who of the visual art community, jostling for a good view of the divine trinkets while catching up with friends.

CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL is so positive about all there is to see, eat and do in this emerging city that they have launched a new free app which builds on the success of the findchch.com website. Find:Chch is a boon for local businesses as it means that both international and domestic tourists as well as locals can access details about them quickly and at no cost. It’s incredibly easy to use, breaking down information into six broad categories. If a visitor to the site is looking for accommodation, entertainment or transport options, it’s just a click or a swipe away. The categories are even sub-divided so that if you are in search of backpackers or a hotel, the app will guide you to just what you are looking for. And the dedicated shoppers in search of high fashion, artisan food or a bargain will find everything they
need to know at their fingertips. Residents will love it too, especially those new to the city. The Information and Services section includes education providers, medical and healthcare choices, libraries, Council offices and emergency services. The app will even guide you to the locations for free WiFi. For the sports-minded, the Parks and Recreation tab will take you to sports fields and clubs, and the What’s Hot section keeps you up-to-date with the amazing transitional city projects. In the 1940s, The University of Illinois School of Architecture developed what interior designers and architects still refer to today as the “work triangle” model. Based on the time/motion studies from the turn of the century, efficiency between the key work areas within the kitchen - cooking (stove top), food preparation (sink/dishwasher and countertop) and food storage (refrigerator) - were calculated in order to reduce costs by standardising construction. Various rules applied, such as no less than 1.2 metres and no more than 2.7m between any one leg, no obstacles, such as
entities solely dedicated to food preparation, which now merge into open plan dining and living areas. The rise in wealth with the Baby Boomer generation has brought an increase in size and have been adapted to accommodate more than one chef, often resembling the layout and zoning used in commercial kitchens. With the rise in technology, appliances have required adaptations on the original work triangle, which often results in secondary triangles formed to include additional zones for baking, food preparation and even a separate bar area with additional sinks and fridges.

Marble has always been associated with opulence. Whether it’s matched with über modern fittings, or given the royal treatment with ornate detailing and paired with traditional materials, marble is a material which lends a sense of grandeur under any guise. Harder than granite, which chips easily, marble is suitable for countertops for its heat-resistant properties and flooring for its durability. Due to its inherent ‘softness’, marble allows for greater design possibilities, as it’s easier to cut than granite. However, its porous nature absorbs colour from foods and liquids like red wine, acidic fruits and vegetables with intense colour like beetroot. As one homeowner with her heart set on using marble throughout her home

By enlisting the services of an electrician or plumber to adjust your thermostat, you could well end up saving more in the long run. Around 80 per cent of all hot water used in a typical Kiwi household is for showering and/ or bathing, yet many showers use a lot more water than they need

Many older homes’ hot water cylinders installed before 2002 - will most likely not be insulated, which makes it harder for your cylinder to heat up and retain the heat it generates. Cylinder wrap is a simple and affordable quick fix that can slash your power bill by up to $140 a year. Wraps cost from around $60 and pipe insulation is about $5 a metre from all good hardware stores. Another great cash saving tip is reducing water waste. Check the temperature of your hot water tap. A LIGHTBULB moment Buying the best bulb takes a little knowledge. We break down the pros and cons of each type. Incandescent The most common bulb used in the home and the cheapest, the incandescent bulb may last longer than the rest (700 to 1000 hours), but it’s not the most energy-efficient. Great for creating ambience, as these bulbs can be dimmed and have a warm, golden glow which compliments skin tones and more psychologically appealing. Halogen Casting a bright light and lasting twice as long as a standard bulb, and like incandescent bulbs can be dimmed. They give a glow similar to natural daylight and are best used for task lighting when reading or working in the kitchen. Slightly more energyefficient than incandescent bulbs, they’re more expensive and burn at a higher temperature. Fluorescent A popular choice for ceiling lighting for lighting large areas like workplaces, but gives off
a cold, unflattering glare and can’t be put on a dimmer. Compact fluorescent Using this is the easiest and most effective way to achieve energy saving practices in the home. Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL) consumes a quarter of the energy that incandescent bulbs do and last 10 times longer. A great replacement for fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, CFLs give a warmer glow and can be used anywhere in the home. LED Gaining in popularity, “light-emitting diode” technology is long lasting and extremely energy-efficient, but is not yet ready to supersede all other bulbs. Providing directional light only, they are ideal for undercounter task lighting.

With over 1500 kitchen designs to her name and a swag of awards under her belt, Ingrid Geldof has made quite an impression in the 12 years she has been running her Christchurch design consultancy.
MAJKA KAISER speaks with the design star from her Bealey Avenue studio about her winning tips and tricks of the trade that keep her at the top. STYLE: What trends have you seen at the various fairs and expos from around the world? INGRID: At EuroCucina (the annual kitchen fair which runs concurrently to the Milan Furniture Fair), I noticed a preference for matte finishes, simple materials, a strong trend for the industrial look with raw timber and metal and bold colour blocking. STYLE: What makes a kitchen function well and how do you ensure it works in harmony with interconnecting spaces such as dining and living areas? INGRID: There are many aspects to consider which need to be well-thought-out in order to achieve a highly functional kitchen, right down to the selection of the handle - or no handle, as the case may be. The client’s needs, architecture and budget must also be taken into account when planning a successful kitchen
design. STYLE: How does your own kitchen compare to those you design for your clients? INGRID: It has a retro feel being suitable for a house of that era. The kitchen is timber veneer and has an engineered stone top. It is pretty compact, but so is the house so it’s proportionate. It’s highly efficient and a delight to work in. STYLE: What do you regard as the fundamental principle underpinning all your kitchen designs? INGRID: Function. I am a highly efficient, practical person and the kitchens I do reflect this. I like simplicity of form so whether you are looking for a highly ornate traditional kitchen, or a slick contemporary one, I will create one with simple forms ensuring ease of use and, ideally, cleaning too!
STYLE: How has the design industry changed over the past two decades you’ve been in business? INGRID: It is now more normal to have an independent designer involved in the design of your kitchen and bathrooms. People’s expectations are much higher and they want more than to work with a joiner, architect or a builder to sort out what they want. Specialists in the field in New Zealand are now very welltravelled and are leaders in the world of kitchen and bathroom design. The National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA) runs diploma and certificate courses in kitchen design to ensure this continues. STYLE: What are you looking forward to most in the next year? INGRID: I’ve been invited to speak at the Bathroom and Kitchen Expo in Mumbai in May next year, which will be fascinating! Experience

counterparts, their evergreen nature and tough foliage make them ideal candidates for shaping into simple geometric forms such as cubes, cones and spheres. Many pittosporum, coprosma and cultivars make quite wonderful topiary specimens.
How to clip?
Although there are shaped wire cages available to help the novice create an even geometric form, the more traditional approach to topiary demands a keen eye, a steady hand and a ton of patience. Although electric hedge clippers can be used to sculpt larger shrubs, these are best used on plants with very fine foliage. Plants with larger leaves should always be carefully cut by hand using secateurs or clippers, taking care not to cut leaves in half but trimming through the stem instead. When cutting flat-sided geometric forms, a taut string line may help to keep lines straight and tops level.
Quite complex topiary-like forms can also be created by growing small-leafed ivy (or other fine-leafed evergreen climbers) over a ‘cage’ formed from wire. As the densely compacted foliage grows around the metal cage it will quickly form a cloak of evergreen foliage and once the cage is completely covered, the plant will need an occasional ‘haircut’ to keep it looking nice and neat.
Topiary standards are another option THE AGE-OLD ART OF TOPIARY involves the clipping and training of the foliage and stems of shrubs and small trees to create simple geometric shapes or recognisable (often quirky) forms. In a way, these topiary specimens become like ‘living sculptures’, acting as strong focal points within a garden design, but a tightly clipped (or ‘topiaried’) hedge can also act as a physical barrier or low edging to contain other plants within a border.
Which plants to choose?
Most plants suitable for topiary are evergreen (to retain their shape year round), have woody stems (which will readily hold then form) and have small leaves and densely compacted foliage (which responds well to tight clipping and shaping). For this reason, plants such as common
box (buxus sempervirens), lavender, rosemary and lonicera nitida have long been popular choices for this art form. Larger trees such as yew (taxus baccata) with its tight, fine dark green foliage, English holly (ilex aquifolium) and bay laurel (laurus nobilis), with its naturally rounded form and glossy evergreen leaves, have also been popular – especially for larger topiaries.
Upright conifers such as thuja also make good candidates for topiary – especially if the desired shape is similar to the plant’s natural form – thin conical forms and flat geometric ‘walls’ for instance. Many of our own native plants respond equally well to tight clipping, and whereas they may not have quite such fine leaves (to produce intricate detail) as some of their European

This is then often trimmed into a geometric shape (usually a sphere in the case of buxus standards) or the plant is left to develop a more relaxed habit (think of ‘Mop Top’ robinias or standard roses). These can be readily purchased at most garden centres or created at home by carefully removing the side branches below a certain height and staking the plant to a cane along the main stem – this will keep the standard upright and help to support the main stem until it thickens. Plants such as upright rosemary and lavender lend themselves particularly well to this type of topiary project.

The gin was cold but the jazz was hot, as New Regent St became old Chicago for a few hours recently when G & A Creative Agency threw a party to open their new city office. Guests arrived turned out in costumes in keeping with the evening's theme, 1930s speakeasy. Glamourous bejewelled ladies hung on the arms of dapper, fedora wearing
gents, huddling in the den and sipping the cocktails on offer. At night's end, the guys, dolls and bootleggers having departed, it was time for the cleaver staff at G & A to prepare to go on a rampage of creativity, to shoot Christchurch full of good ideas, design and advertising.

On a recent winter evening, the moon broke through the veil of drizzly clouds shrouding the city and shone on the new elegant building in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. An opportunity to attend a traditional Taiwanese tea ceremony at a local tea emporium reveals the secret world of tea. MAJKA KAISER shares her discoveries to better your health and deepen your knowledge of the vast varieties available. Joined by a gathering of unsuspecting passionate tea drinkers one winter evening, I embarked on what would prove to be a fascinating master class demystifying the wonderful world of tea at the Teasme Church Corner store. The next three hours flew by, thanks to our gregarious and experienced tea tour guide, marketing graduate and store manager Eng Eu Poh, who took us through the who’s who of their extensive range of premium quality teas. I quickly learned that the most common variety of tea is black tea, which accounts for around 75 per cent of the world’s tea consumption. Typically rolled and fermented then dried and crushed, most black tea can be served without milk in order to experience the full flavour and shouldn’t be bitter if brewed correctly. Black tea is also attributed to lowering cholesterol levels, but has the most caffeine per cup of all tea varieties. Green tea has always been my favourite due to its more delicate flavour than black tea. The leaves are dried and heat-treated
soon after they’re picked, which stops the fermentation process. Containing half as much caffeine as black tea per cup, it’s a great alternative hot drink packed with anti-oxidants, which some say wards off a number of serious illnesses from cancer to heart disease and can even help with weight loss. Despite green tea receiving the most attention for its anti-oxidant properties associated with preventing a range of health problems and illness, white tea may also benefit diabetics. As white tea is picked when the leave are very young - right at the beginning of spring - the flavour is much milder than green tea and has half as much caffeine per cup. Herbal tea is where my love affair with tea first began, and I am surprised to learn that this variety of tea is not technically a tea at all, as they are usually made up of a combination of dried fruits, flowers and herbs. The only tea with no caffeine at all, different herbal concoctions each contain specific health benefits for both physical and psychological wellbeing.

LIKE FATHER like daughter
FATHER’S DAY serves as a helpful reminder for each of us to take stock of what our fathers have done to shape the people we have become, inspiring us to become worthy role models for generations to follow. MAJKA KAISER gathers her memories to reflect on the riches her own father has passed down to her. Born to an Austrian immigrant, my father was a toolmaker and the eldest of six children. Born in 1939, he was just five years old when the war ended. He assumed the role of caregiver of his younger siblings and mother when his father tragically died when he was just 12. He never talks much about what a difficult childhood he must’ve had. Often recounting stories of the past that are filled with humorous anecdotes and even the ones that touch on harder times during the Russian occupation, he inevitably sees the funny side. The hopeless romantic my father is, he knew
girl could ever dream of, it is only now in my mid30s that I have really begun to scratch the surface to fully appreciate all that my parents sacrificed to give me what they never had, both materially and psychologically. Although my mother had a more dominant presence while growing up, my father was always there behind the camera while I performed on stage with the local theatre group or the ballet troupe and throughout my former singing career, and would later play the diplomatic role of peacekeeper between my mother and I, whose personalities clashed throughout

instantly that my mother was the one for him when they met aboard the Oronsay in 1971. Returning to his homeland after living and working in Melbourne for three years, my mother, a teacher, was embarking on her lifelong dream of foreign adventures. Boarding in Sydney for the eight-week journey by ship, they met on day two at sea. After a three-year engagement, while my mother worked in an English boarding school, they returned down under together to marry and five years later, I entered the picture. Growing up an only child, I was lavished with all the attention and opportunities which scarcely could’ve been better. Yet, despite being given everything a
my turbulent teenage years and into adulthood. Dad was always good with his hands, building me a miniature Swiss chalet in our backyard from timber offcuts salvaged from his factory, and hours spent designing and perfecting science projects together in his workshop, concrete floor littered with curly wood shavings filling my nostrils with the smell of chopped wood and turpentine. As I take this time to recall all those special moments of his generosity, I just hope I’m not too late to repay the gratitude that overwhelms me. This is my ode to you, dad. MAJKA KAISER SITS DOWN WITH CHRISTCHURCH ENTREPENEUR FOR A SURPRISING HEART-TO-HEART WHERE SHE DISCOVERS A MAN OF SIMPLE TASTES AND GREAT HUMILITY. Self-made property developer Shaun Stockman came from humble stock. The eldest son of three to an Irish mechanic and Kiwi seamstress, Shaun grew up in Cass Bay and has remained a loyal Cantabrian all his life. Following in his father’s footsteps, Shaun entered the workforce as a panel beater before venturing into real estate at 24 with his first property - a little cottage in Sydenham. Showing innate talent for the property market, within his first year at Harcourts Shaun was voted top rookie salesperson. With a steadily increasing residential property portfolio combined with his hands-on experience in the market, Shaun later turned his focus to commercial property investment. Fast-forward two decades and Shaun is a director and shareholder of KPI Rothschild Property Group and its subsidiaries throughout Christchurch and Timaru. At 55, one would expect a man in his position to pass over the reigns to his capable codirectors, but Shaun has no plans to sit back and bask in the glow of his achievements. As I enter Shaun’s newly refurbished office within the charmingly restored 1883 Bonnington House on High Street, I detect a faint aroma of newly laid carpet and freshly painted walls, which bear the hallmarks of all that remains of his other inner city historic buildings. Framed artist’s sketches and handsome original watercolour blueprints are mere mementos of so much achieved and helpful reminders of how it can all disappear in the blink

of an eye. With strong family ties and meaningful connections with his church community, Shaun is a true Christian, putting his money where his mouth is. His financial contributions are not merely the obligatory monthly donations to worthy causes – although this list is quite substantial - but he chooses to engage at a much deeper level. One such charitable trust Shaun is clearly passionate about is Crossroads Youth with a Future, of which he is a trustee. A drop-in centre for atrisk youth based in Aranui, Shaun’s first encounter with the centre 12 years ago made an indelible impression. As he recounts the evening’s events in vivid detail I begin to see Shaun’s focus sharpen to a steely knife-edge and feel a surge of compassion rise from the depths. What began as a simple business dealing would prove to be a valuable awakening to a violent and impoverished side of life Shaun had never known. Overwhelmed, Shaun candidly admits to driving around the block and bursting into tears of despair. “What chance do they have if we just sit in our white castles, in our comfortable middle-of-the-road lives?” Using his position as an opportunity to extend his generosity beyond his immediate circle of friends and family. An inspiration to us all with abundant life conditions - and chances are if you’ve picked up this magazine, you’re one of the fortunate ones.

Renowned wine label Cloudy Bay brought the warmth of Marlborough to Canterbury, to complement the dishes dreamed up by a pair of Christchurch’s most innovative culinary artists. Lawrence Harvey and Mark McCracken, head chefs respectively at JDV and Baretta, provided a duck-based menu to match the wine at the 4th International Cloudy Bay Pinot & Duck Tasting Trail on June 25. Guests were challenged to deduce the secret ingredients used, each bite creating a puzzle for the palate to solve. With Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir to travel alongside the food, the luncheon held at JDV, then at Baretta, proved an appetising success.

Christchurch partygoers did not have to travel to Italy, in order to have an evening in Venice during winter because the city of canals and gondolas came to the CBS Arena to be the setting for this year's Cancer Society Ball. The dulcet voices of singing gondoliers were replaced by retro songs from the colourful Vague As Brothers and the slick swing of the New Zealand Army Band. All the vivacity
and romance of the old world was recreated so guests could enjoy gourmet dining and lively dancing before fishing deeply into pockets and purses to bid for the luxury items auctioned during the evening. The joy of the ball was made sweeter with the knowledge that the money raised is being destined to support the ongoing work of the Cancer Society in the battle to defeat this terrible disease.

Performance, luxury and style are major reasons why buyers choose BMW. And as time has served to prove, more and more BMW models are incorporating those ingredients. Take the latest to come my way, the 220i Coupe; it oozes style with its low, sleek shape, it has performance to envy with its 135kW engine and has a high level of specification worthy of a luxury tag. The 220i Coupe is essentially based on the 1-Series platform, the nomenclature distancing itself a little from the hatch and sedan shapes of its stablemate. The 220i’s design is curvy yet aggressive. It has a shape which lures comment and desire, yet it also has practicality, which doesn’t always present itself with coupe designs. The latter is particularly noticeable; the 220i offers easy entry and egress up front, the
doors aren’t overly wide so they aren’t a nuisance in close confines, while there’s also the benefit of reasonable leg room for those who are confined to the two rear seats. The 220i is only available here in two variants at present. The test car was listing at $71,700 in base form and there is a six-cylinder M235i model at $104,800, but for my money the entry-level four-cylinder is the pick. It is dynamic, comfortable and a heck of a lot of fun. It is also loaded with the packages that BMW has developed so that safety and fuel efficiency isn’t compromised. One is labelled EfficientDynamics and it is simply an energy regeneration system under deceleration, and along with an economy driving mode, prompts are made so that the driver is aware that fuel usage saving targets can be easily met. According to BMW, the 220i
can achieve a combined cycle rating of seven-litres per 100km (40mpg). My time with the test car resulted in a 9l/100km (31mpg) average which wasn’t that far distant along with a 5.2l/100km (51mpg) highway cruise figure with the engine turning over very relaxed at just 1750rpm at 100km/h. While fuel economy is one thing, BMW engines are generally built with performance as the main manufacturing ingredient. Under the bonnet sits a longitudinally-mounted, fourpotter which is also rated with 270Nm of torque. The turbocharged, double camshaft engine is coupled to a fabulous eight-speed automatic gearbox. The combination of both is alluring with strong engine performance and shift quality which make ratios changes almost undetectable. The 220i is fast for a two-litre
car. It will scorch to 100km/h from a standstill in 7 seconds and will lunge through an 80km/h to 120km/h overtaking manoeuvre in 4sec thanks to a strong turbo surge and high mid-range torque output. The engine also stands out for its revvy nature and solid performance through the rev band and, of course, there’s always a gear on hand. There’s never a feeling that the transmission is not in a suitable ratio. That’s the benefit of eight-speeders - the gaps between ratios are close, prompting a lively engine feel. Of course, the 220i doesn’t need to be driven aggressively, but when it is it feels strong, akin to the performance aspect of BMW. At city speeds it is docile and feeds power gently so that stopstart traffic is relaxing. The 220i characteristically drives through the rear axles and, in the first instance, that provides

compromised. The 220i provided one of the great drives of 2014. It is balanced, sharp in the steering and has power which enables it to accelerate quickly between corners, yet will brake and turn with uncanny ability. The 220i is a true driver’s car and rewards with its lithe and nimble nature. I can’t wait until other engine combinations arrive down under. Diesel power is a certainty, while the 240kW engine of the

It also has steering which makes the car feel like it is riding on velvet, every nuance of the road surface is cushioned but delivered back to the driver so that he or she understands the handling characteristics. BMW is strong on safety and the electronic devices, which control traction, are there so that the rear end stays stable under power. However, the chassis is so advanced that the car doesn’t rely on the safety devices; it can be driven hard yet grip is rarely challenged. The low profile Bridgestone Potenza tyres (225/40 x 18in and 245/35 x 18in) have a solid tenure with the road and, what’s more, they are quiet and have a lot of absorption through the sidewall so that ride comfort isn’t
M-Sport model would be a powerhouse of true proportions. And not forgetting the 220i has the glitz to go with the glamour, it has all the major specification ingredients such as satellite navigation and stop-start fuel saving technology, along with an option list which spans several A4 sheets of paper. The test car was fitted with a $4000 M-Sport option which adds gloss to an already well polished car. The 220i is certainly another car for the Lotto win wish list.
