“I seem to have loved you in numberless forms, numberless times… In life after life, in age after age, forever. My spellbound heart has made and remade the necklace of songs, That you take as a gift, wear round your neck in your many forms, In life after life, in age after age, forever...” - Rabindranath Tagore, Bengali poet of India

I

remember the first time I was in love. I was five, his name was Tim, and he preferred my friend Shannon because she was – and I quote – “blonde and shorter than you”. I, on the other hand, had jet black hair, knobbly knees and a rather wild imagination. As they 'married' on the school field during our ten minute break one day, I played second-fiddle as the emotional bridesmaid, my chin wobbling away. Needless to say, I wasn't on the verge of tears for any reason other than feeling completely sorry for myself. Oh the heartbreak! Love is beautifully simple and achingly complex at times - the potent intoxication one feels in the 'Honeymoon Phase'; the euphoric highs chasing the tail of the perilous lows and vice versa; the feeling of despair when that 'First Love' that promised you the moon and the stars, leaves you for university, a new city, or, the absolute worst, a new significant other. Yes, it's undeniable; love can be an untameable beast at times. I'm a big fan of the 'Forever Afters' and feel very blessed to have been a part of the team working their romantic magic on our annual Wedding Inspirations Magazine that you will find at the heart of today's issue. From the most whimsical styles redefining wedding attire through to dreamy diamonds and decadent venues, we have you covered. For those ready to 'put a ring on it' or in the process of preparing for your Big Day, we hope you get swept up in the excitement of what you find in these pages. Dare to dream a little dream, and give your loved one – partner, child, sibling or anyone you consider the 'Apple of Your Eye' a big cuddle when you next see them. After all, love is the most magical power of all.

Sweet talk What do you get when you mix the match-made-in-heaven ingredients of an ambitious woman and a love of baking? 'Glamour Cakes' of course!

23-year-old Bree Scott, New Zealand Baker of The Year in 2014; a representative for Aotearoa in o-shore baking competitions, and a rising YouTube star talks about what's cooking when it comes to her career.

12 April 7, 2016 Metropol

OUT & ABOUT

What inspired your professional journey? I was brought up in the baking industry. I have been baking for as long as I can remember. It really owes a lot to my Dad who helped me sign up for my apprenticeship and runs Lyttelton Bakery. I started to pursue baking as a career when I finished school in 2010 – it took a bit longer than expected due to the earthquakes. What does a career in baking offer? While there have been some nail biting moments along the way, I wouldn't change anything about my decision to choose baking as a career. I have learnt so much about so many subjects including technology and science. I am incredibly passionate about the industry and the opportunity to network and meet other people. What are 'Glamour Cakes'? Glamour Cakes are very much my thing. It's interesting because when I first started out it was an idea, a pet project.

I am such a perfectionist and my vision was to create something pretty and glamorous while also being wholesome and delicious. Glamour Cakes are designed to push the boundaries – in terms of ingredients and look. What gives you your key point of difference? I feel I'm still working out my difference to everyone else, but at this stage what makes me different is my sense of adventure – I'm always creating a new product. It's what our customers have come to expect! Do you have future ambitions with your 'Glamour Cakes' crusade? I definitely want to see where Glamour Cakes take me – it would be a dream for me to have my own business. Right now, I am very fortunate to be able to learn how to run a business through Lyttelton Bakery. What's the craziest recipe you've ever concocted? Lollycake Cheesecake! It went viral on Facebook. I couldn't believe it – after I

posted it the numbers just started climbing. You can check out all of my creations here: www.facebook.com/breesglamourcake Do you have a professional philosophy that you are particularly passionate about? For me it's definitely about taking calculated risks – the opportunities are so powerful when you do. It's about disciplined training too – putting time aside for what you really want to do. I dedicate time to practice and theory to perfect my craft. Ultimately, you can achieve anything you put your mind to. Words of wisdom for aspiring creatives? I would say at the end of the day 'go for it'. Don't be afraid to put your hand up for help. When you are challenged and learning, you will find people who are happy to help you on your way. I've been fortunate to have the support of the Birt Committee (Baking Industry Research Trust) who put me forward for an Australasian Baking Competition.

A SHARED FOOD PHILOSOPHY It is a simple shared food philosophy that has brought two iconic Christchurch names together.

C

ontinental has teamed up with Heritage Christchurch at the

recently re-opened Maddison's Restaurant in Cathedral Square to launch a cuisine ethos that benefits both diners and the planet. The Heritage's Good Food Project follows six commitments around tasty yet nutritious food using locally sourced sustainable products – a philosophy which resonated with Continental and its own approach to food. A signature Heritage Raw Breakfast Bar is one of the innovative options available at Maddison's Restaurant, along with the likes of freshly caught long-line fish; locally grown Wakanui beef and organic lamb, and organic produce. Continental Executive Chef, Simo Abbari, has assembled a highly-qualified and

passionate team for the Maddison's kitchen, led by Head Chef, Scott Gibb. “Working in Maddison's kitchen is not just about cooking food and serving in the restaurant is not just about carrying a plate,” Chef Simo says. “All the team understands and shares our ethos of delivering food that is the best it can be for us, with maximum positive impact for our bodies and our community, and minimum negative impact on the planet's resources. Come and sample who we are and what we have on offer – come and share with us.” To experience Maddison's unique cuisine approach, phone 983 4895 to make a reservation, with the restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Oi YOU! – STREET ART

OUT & ABOUT

By Hans Petrovic

“The post-earthquake cityscape of Christchurch can be challenging. The street art-murals transform it and offer a beautiful, uplifting backdrop,” says George Shaw, Director of the Oi YOU! street-art events that have been brightening up the city for the past three years.

G

eorge and his partner, Shannon Webster, have been the driving force behind this, inviting leading overseas street artists to come to Christchurch and add their personal touch to the city as a part of their RISE and SPECTRUM events. “Our Oi YOU! shows are a unique blend of outdoor murals and stunning indoor exhibitions,” George says. Originally from Britain, George and Shannon's passion for street art was sparked by Banksy, the England-based graffiti artist of unverified identity. After purchasing a few Banksy prints in 2005,

they tracked down the artist's management, seeking something more unique. These connections led to George and Shannon being invited to a preview of the artist's Los Angeles exhibition in 2006. Although George claims that, to his knowledge, he has never met the elusive artist, he and Shannon now own the biggest Banksy collection in the Southern Hemisphere. Their involvement with Christchurch was instigated after the earthquakes by the Ministry of Awesome, which supports entrepreneurs for local projects and events. They were introduced to the management of the Canterbury Museum, leading to their first exhibition in this city, the RISE Festival,

beginning in December 2013. During its three-month run, more than 248,000 visitors went through the museum, smashing previous visitor records for any event held there. RISE also went on to win the coveted New Zealand Museum Show of the Year award. Out on the streets during the opening week, overseas artists painted about a dozen beautiful murals. The artists included Telmo and Miel from Holland, Seth from France and Cuban-American Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada. “Our whole focus now is on Christchurch. Spectrum took 3 1/2 months to put together. Now, we have to imagine a new show and go through a myriad of ideas.”

MT PLEASANT

SEA SCOUTS By Hans Petrovic

Rowing; sailing; swimming; seamanship – even some flying – are activities we usually do not associate with scouting, but they certainly keep the children going at the Mt Pleasant Sea Scout Group.

“W

e do the same as land scouts but we do sea things as well,” says Group Leader Roger Horton, who has been guiding the Mt Pleasant Sea Scouts, aged from six to 19, including several girls, since 1988. “We've got 74 young members and 12 older leaders, who take them through all the activities and sections. The kids love the whole gambit of stuff we do – sailing; playing games; camping; regattas; motorbiking; flying. They do stuff appropriate to their age groups.”

16 April 7, 2016 Metropol

Members are divided into four age groups, starting with the youngest - Keas, then Cubs, Scouts and the older Venturers, who are more self-organised so that they can take care of themselves. “There are 57 Sea Scout groups in New Zealand, all of whom use the same type of open boat for rowing and sailing. It was designed in New Zealand in 1910. It can hold six youngsters and a cox for rowing, or seven kids for sailing. It's a fantastic training vessel for teaching them how to sail and seamanship,” Roger says.

A four-day regional regatta for the 10 Sea Scout groups (from Nelson to Mount Cook) was held at Lake Brunner on the West Coast over the Easter weekend. Activities included rowing, sailing and swimming races. There were also seamanship tests and a camping competition. Actual flying lessons for youngsters are something not usually associated with scouts, but Roger has them participating in these also. “Early this year, I took 20 boys, aged 10

to 14, to the West Melton airfield, which is part of the Canterbury Aero Club. They have three two-seater Tomahawk light aircraft each with an instructor,” says Roger, who has a private pilot's licence. “The boys sit in the seat on the left side of the instructor and he tells them what to do. They all took off and landed. On their first landing attempt, they did a quick touch-down and immediately took off again. On their second landing, they stayed down. The plane is dual-control with the instructor at the other controls.

Quite a lot of them also had a go.” Roger has been a Scouts Leader for 40 years. He emigrated from England in 1979 and started here with the Dallington Scouts Group. He has been with the Mt Pleasant group for 28 years.

Roger has always gone for individual sports hence his interest in sailing, flying and fencing. In fact, it was his interest in fencing that first got him involved with scouts back in England, where a coworker asked him to teach fencing to scouts for one night. He then became involved in other scouting activities. Now, in Christchurch, he is also teaching fencing at Shirley Boys High and Chinsallwood Intermediate school. New life in the old theatre The Three Bears and Goldilocks have settled into Canterbury Children's Theatre's (CCT) historic building – The Malthouse - for the school holidays, which is now quakesafe and secure.

A

fter 18-months of restoration to The Malthouse, its Cushion Theatre is showcasing a twist to the favourite fairytale from 16 April to 1 May. “The environmental moral to the story is about humans encroaching on animals’ habitats. Goldilocks is the villain here – and learns a lesson,” Director Victoria Powell says. “The actors interact with the audience making it easy for children three years and over to engage and hopefully forge a lifelong love of theatre.” There's a meet and greet and photo opportunities afterwards.

18 April 7, 2016 Metropol

“The audience at our Aladdin play thought the recent Valentine's Day quake was just part of the sound effects, not even realising what was happening,” she says. “There were lots of

positive comments. The building didn't even move.” Canterbury Children's Theatre President, Suzanne Rivers, says earthquake strengthening was orchestrated by former Chair of The Malthouse, Ian Beswick, in 2003 otherwise it would not have had such a fortunate fate. She says foundations have been re-laid to an incredible strength along with outstanding restoration and improvements. Every stone of its enchanted exterior has been returned to its original place. With well-insulated walls and new heat pumps, Cushion Theatre is fresh, warm and comfortable with new big, bright cushions and plenty of parking. The Malthouse at 71 Colombo Street has been home to The Canterbury Children's Theatre since 1965. With three shows planned annually, a great future is set in stone. A LOVE STORY FOR THE AGES Rangiora and wider North Canterbury are abuzz with expectation. The much anticipated annual production by the North Canterbury Musical Society is soon to hit the stage at the Rangiora Town Hall.

T

his year it's Elton John and Tim Rice's Tony and Grammy awardwinning Aida. The show may be based on Giuseppe Verdi's 19th century opera of the same name, but opera this is not. Rather it is contemporary musical theatre with a pulsating score, a big poprock sound and cleverly crafted lyrics.

Contemporary musical theatre with a pulsating score, a big pop-rock sound and cleverly crafted lyrics.

Songs such as Written in the Stars, Every Story is a Love Story and Fortune Favours the Brave are part of the musical score. “The North Canterbury Musical Society is renowned for its musical productions”, Director Teresa Dann says. “Aida is definitely the most beautiful love story ever told.” That story is an epic tale of love, loyalty and betrayal chronicling the love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess stolen from her country; Amneris, an Egyptian princess, and Radames, the soldier they both love. “There's something in this show for everyone,” Teresa says. “Superb songs; beautiful duets; fabulous orchestration and really big dance numbers. There are 30 in the cast and our three leads are simply stunning. It has been a joy to work on the production and with all the wonderful local volunteer helpers for this - my directorial debut.” The season of Aida runs from 5 – 21 May. Most performances are at 7.30pm, but there are also three matinees. Tickets are $32 for adults and $27 for seniors, students and children.

VA-VA-VOOM VINTAGE By Rachel Smith

Vintage markets are filled with memories. There are those long forgotten pieces of homeware that we had in our own homes or remember seeing at our grandparents; the old games that no-one can quite remember how to play, and books we were read as children.

The entire Rochester Villa is filled with treasures.

O

nce a month on a Sunday, The Shabby Chic Market Day at Rochester Villa in Woolston welcomes these memories. The brainchild of Helen Milburn - an antique dealer herself - the original market was only ever meant to be a one-off back in 2009. During a visit two years ago, the market was starting to flourish. On the beautiful sunny Sunday in March 2016 when I am there, the entire property is buzzing with people. It is obvious the market has become a much-loved fixture in the city for those who are on the look-out for something a little bit different and a little bit vintage. “I never envisaged it getting as big as this,” says Helen, who now organises the monthly market with her daughter Sarah. The entire Rochester Villa is filled with

22 April 7, 2016 Metropol

treasures, most of which are for sale with some of Helen's own pieces also on display. Original fixtures feature throughout, such as the coal range in the kitchen, adding to the wonderfully authentic feel. Up to 40 stalls are scattered throughout

the garden, each with its very own speciality of shabby chic. There are old glass milk bottles; wonderful mirrors; crocheted rugs; beautiful linen and embroidery; vintage jewellery and fashion; hundreds of buttons; records; books; an array of homeware, and a selection of sweet treats and breads. Out the back of the villa, Sarah has created the perfect spot to enjoy a Devonshire tea (scones made fresh by Helen at a very early hour on the day of the market) at a table under their collection of bright umbrellas. Doily covered sugar bowls sit next to little teapots filled with flowers, with the tables busy with those looking over the treasures they have found. Visit Shabby Chic Market Day on Facebook for more information.

IN THE CITY WHAT’S ON BARS & CAFÉS WHAT’S NEW ART RETAIL DOWNTOWN

MAKING OUR CREATIVE MARK By Melinda Collins

Five years on from the earthquakes that changed the face of Christchurch, the South Island city is no longer the quaint post-Victorian spot it once was as we rise from the rubble with a dynamic new edge. Christchurch has become one of the most unique urban redevelopments in the world, attracting attention for creativity and innovation. Nowhere is this more evident than in our CBD.

New city library

King Edward Barracks King Edwards Barracks heads rapidly towards completion Structural work is progressing on the Ngāi Tahu Property development at the historic King Edwards Barracks site between Cashel Street; Hereford Street; Montreal Street and Cambridge Terrace. The structure of the first floor is now being built on the northern office building while the southern office building structure is underway above the first floor/base isolation level. The $250m project will be completed in stages with the office buildings scheduled for completion later this year. 24 April 7, 2016 Metropol

City set for largest public library in South Island The city's new central library – which will be the largest public library within the South Island – has been put out to tender. Ground works have commenced on site, along with work to remove asbestosriddled demolition materials, which will allow construction to commence later this year in preparation for a scheduled completion in early 2018. New city library Thinking outside the architectural square Contemporary architecture doesn't have to be bland, as represented by Boxed Quarter – a $6m modular precinct under construction on the corner of Madras and St Asaph Streets. What began as an idea for exhibition space, ArtBox is now set to house shops; cafes; bars; offices; music studios and performance and exhibition spaces around laneways and public courtyards designed by F3 Design. The central block along St Asaph Street is now complete and a new south western block is underway.

Historic Caffe Roma building to get new lease on life The 1930s Italian palazzo-style Midland Club building (more commonly known as the Caffe Roma building on Oxford Terrace between Gloucester Street and Worcester Boulevard) has been sold to Club Lane Ltd, who wants to restore it. Once a popular meeting spot for lawyers and businessmen, it has become a target for vandals and squatters post-quake. Its would-be rescuers have applied to the Christchurch City Council for a $869,500 heritage grant to help pay for the work.

THE REBIRTH OF A CITY The tyranny of distance has always pushed Kiwis to think outside the box. By Melinda Collins

A

s we pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off – both in the figurative and literal sense – Christchurch's core is becoming a showcase for the kind of clever only Kiwis are truly capable of. The city is emerging with an intriguing new edge and while the Central Business District that bore the brunt of the quakes is still a work in progress, creative and passionate locals have been taking the opportunity and running with it. Little by little and project by project, the ever-evolving urban landscape is taking form with striking new buildings such as the innovative wave-like façade of 151 Cambridge Terrace. There are the lovingly restored heritage precincts such as the Isaac Theatre Royal and 1930s New Regent Street sitting among refreshed open spaces and gap filler installations, which illustrate the city's edgy new attitude.

Little by little and project by project, the ever-evolving urban landscape is taking form.

Unique out-of-the-box projects such as the Re:Start Container Mall and the Transitional 'Cardboard' Cathedral are interspersed between creative street art, clever retail spaces and a raft of quality hospitality hot spots creating a compelling new vibe. In fact, out-of-the-box sums up the new city space well. When C1 reopened in November 2012 in one of the remaining heritage buildings, it was likely the first in the world to deliver food at 100km/hr by pneumatic tube and now its own rooftop vineyard is producing pinot noir in the CBD. At 154 High Street, an edible landscape is also proving a popular central spot. A shared space accessible to all, the transitional farm enables the composting of organic waste from inner city hospitality businesses, as well as a place to create produce – from ground preparation, sowing and planting to harvesting. We're a crafty lot in our little corner of the South Pacific and our CBD wears it well.

Located on the first floor, adjacent to the Ravenscar Dress Circle Foyer, the 175m2 Gloucester Room is a mul -purpose space, suitable for func ons, mee ngs and presenta ons of up to 120 seated theatre-style, 80 banquet or classroom style or 150 cocktail style. The room includes a projector; screen; lectern; Speech PA; microphone and basic ligh ng rig. The space also comes with wifi, lots of natural light or full blackout capabili es adding to the flexibility and ease of the venue. With a commercial grade kitchen servery to the side of the Gloucester Room, our preferred caterers are well equipped to manage all levels of food service for your event from canapés to plated meals or simple refreshments at your seminar session. One of the most talked about exhibitions has been the pairing of two of New Zealand's most respected painters, Colin McCann and Petrus van der Velden. For the children, we have Beasts, and we also have the fantasy world of Pip and Pop a spellbinding rainbowcoloured world made out of 600kg of caster sugar. People also love the Legacy section, which consists mainly of gifts and bequests, as well as showing what we've bought while we've been closed. one are the days when grey meant dingy sweatpants and hoodies. Over the last few seasons, grey has emerged triumphant as the stylish neutral from the home to the runway. More modern than black and infinitely more interesting than navy, grey is the 'new neutral' - the most sophisticated of them all. Softer than stark black, grey can be a more flattering alternative, especially for women over 40. Use charcoal as the building block of your wardrobe upon which you can add paler shades of grey as you grow in confidence. Monochromatic grey on grey is best achieved by layering up different shades of grey in order to create interest. Use accents of grey to give light relief to outfits in one colour with shoes, scarves, jewellery or a statement bag on your arm. An incredibly versatile colour, grey can be paired with the whole spectrum of the rainbow as long as the shade of grey you opt for is either a cool or warm tone to work in synchronicity. Another way to break up monotony is by paying close attention to texture. With winter approaching, there are various natural fibres like wool, silk, fur and leather to add a tactile quality. Either sleek and tailored, or relaxed and chunky, wool is seen in coats and jackets; fine merino cigarette pants; pencil skirts and knitwear, while soft and supple leather or suede adds interest with shoes; handbags; belts and even jewellery. Pattern provides an element of interest to break up solid blocks of colour. Look to herringbone or tweed for 'Ivy League' elegance and geometrics or modern prints for cutting-edge swag.

THE ART OF LETTING GO By Majka Kaiser

We like to think we're different from the next person, but when it comes down to it we all want the same two things in life - to be happy and avoid suffering. In our tireless pursuit of happiness and with our fruitless avoid-pain-at-all-costs attitude, we are like a dog constantly chasing its tail with little satisfaction.

W

'Patient acceptance' can make our journey through life a much more enjoyable one.

e've heard the cliché, “It's not about the cards you're dealt, but how you play your hand,” but do we really understand its true meaning, or perhaps more importantly, the practical steps to get there? The fact of the matter is we all want to be happy - all of the time. So it's no wonder that we're continually disappointed and left wondering where we went wrong. If, instead, we apply a little 'patient acceptance' instead of righteous indignation, then we are bound to find our journey through life to be a much more enjoyable one. When I say patient acceptance, it's important not to mistake this for simply gritting your teeth and baring it. With mindfulness, you will begin to sense if simply holding on is what you've mistakenly believed to be 'patience' when it in fact creates a stuck, tight, unsettled feeling. When you're genuinely practicing the art of patient acceptance, a feeling of total peace will wash over you, cleansing you of all bad feelings. Of course this doesn't mean you have to go through life passively, never changing things within your control, but it does mean you can respond with an open-heart and mind, which can lead to a better outcome for all.

GRIN AND 'BARE' IT

By Kate Pierson

'Au natural' is a hot look for the season meaning you should let that natural beauty of yours shinethrough - no ifs, buts or maybes.

T

he bare-faced beauty has been befriended by many of the o shore trendsetters with visionaries like Chanel and Michael Kors leading the charge. So what are the must-knows when it comes to mastering this look? A touch of subtle colour comes via nudes and soft pinks if in doubt, leave it out. Less is intentionally more with this look. A beige lipstick will perfect the pared-back look, or try a colourless gloss for the perfect pout. To not prime is a crime, so choose an option that will leave your skin looking smooth and supple - better yet, pick an option that also minimises pores. A little bit of sheer, sparkle-free illuminator wouldn't go astray, but go easy so you don't venture in to 'disco diva' territory. There's a ne balance. If you feel eyeshadow is a must, stick to earthy tones to ensure your look remains on point. If you're going to work in any detail to the eye, kept it subtle, with a irty liquid liner for the evening, or carefully applied mascara to perfect those peepers.

LOVING THE 'LOB'

By Kate Pierson

Thinking about a transformation or a way to tame those wayward tresses? Say 'hello' to the Lob, aka the long bob.

I

f you've yet to become acquainted, you've been hiding under a rock somewhere for quite some time now. It's the chic yet low maintenance (relatively speaking) do donned the world over as a beautiful middle-ground between long and short hair; a stylish compromise that can be worn up or down. The hallmark of a great Lob is shiny, loved locks minus any of those pesky split ends that wreak havoc on an otherwise smart style. It's pretty much the best friend of every face shape and almost every hair type, but proceed with caution if you've got hair at either end of the textural spectrum - super thin or super thick - as the Lob works best with hair that will naturally take to the cut. If you have a trusted relationship with a regular hairdresser, they will give you the down-low on whether you can work the Lob or not. Bottom line is, if the cut and style in the salon takes an extraordinary amount of time to perfect, chances are you'll really struggle to hit the mark when you're solomissioning it.

MIX AND MATCH By Melinda Collins

Jasmine doesn't like to show her legs; Sarah won't touch anything strapless; Natalie refuses to wear something that doesn't pull her waist in; redhaired Bridget swears she can only pull off two colours and Georgia doesn't wear dresses at all. And that's before you even start thinking about the wedding dress.

S

o it's not surprising that many brides opt for unique bridesmaid dresses. It's not necessarily new, but as laid-back weddings take centre stage, so too is this ode to personality. But, while it's easy to think mixing and matching bridesmaid dresses means one thing to scratch off your to-do list, think

again. Intentionally mismatching outfits can be just as much work for those involved as more traditional options. So we've broken it down with three easy ways to mix and match for your big day. 1. Different shades of the same colour palette are the easiest way to mix and match bridesmaid dresses. The hardest part is ensuring your team stick with the same colour family and that the blush doesn't turn into hot pink or the nude into gold. 2. Another way to mix and match is with

texture. Whether it's sequins or lace, texture is a great way to achieve a cohesive look for your bridal party. Try all lace in different colours, or feature the texture in smaller capacities on some girls and all over on others – a lace skirt for one, laced sleeves for another. 3. Or perhaps give it a go with patterns to add character and diversity to the bridal party. Give pretty floral patterns a go or dare to try a striped theme. For a larger bridal party, throw in a few solid dresses in the same palette to break up the pattern.

THE MIRACLE OF LIFE Fertility Associates Christchurch is proud to have been helping people create families for 25 years. The clinic was established in 1991 at the old Christchurch Women's Hospital site. Over the years the clinic has had several name changes and has been part of the Fertility Associates' group of clinics since 2011. Fertility Associates Christchurch has been based at St Georges Hospital since 2000 and over this time many new and exciting procedures have developed, which has meant that the people of Christchurch and the wider South Island have continued to have access to world-leading fertility treatment.

Patients attending the Fertility Associates Christchurch clinic can be reassured they are receiving the very best knowledge and care for their fertility journey. 4 WAYS WITH SCARVES By Majka Kaiser

Accessories are a girl's best friend when it comes to adding that finishing touch or making a striking statement to your outfit. Scarves are not just for keeping the autumn chills at bay, but will give you serious style cred. Dig out those options from the depths of your wardrobe and give these four styles a whirl. 1: Bandit Popular particularly with the younger fashionista set, this casual style is easily achieved by tying two opposite corners of your scarf to form a loose triangle and positioning the knot behind your neck. Team this style with a simple t-shirt or collarless top for maximum impact. 2: Infinity The simplest style to tie - begin by creating a large loop by tying the ends of the scarf together; hang the loop around your neck with the knot at the back; twist the scarf in a figure of eight and put the new loop you've created over your head. 3: Classic Side Knot This style is best achieved with shorter, lightweight scarves and worn with collarless tops, t-shirts and twin sets for that sophisticated preppy look. 4: Boho Drape For the ultimate in effortless bohemian chic that requires no knots at all, simply drape a long, voluminous scarf around your neck and let it hang. This look works best using scarves with big, bold patterns or prints.

AN OXFORD OCCASION We've developed quite the soft spot for markets – as exemplified by our story on the Shabby Chic Market in this issue.

C

hristchurch is certainly giving all it's got when it comes to recreation – its generosity has seemingly exploded with all sorts of greatness since Mother Nature changed our city as we know it. Canterbury in its entirety has so much to offer, and on the days where city adventure just doesn't appeal, we know the perfect spot to find deliciously fresh produce and goodies for the home. Oxford Farmers Market & Village Market is a bit of an institution in its own right, held in a quaint little town, which definitely punches above its weight when it comes to keeping

locals and visitors entertained. Visit Oxford on a Sunday from 9ammidday and you'll find the Farmers Market' in its finest form on Main Street. Rightly so, the weekly event prides itself on being a market where the seller is the producer. A wide range of meats; fruit; vegetables; flowers; fresh fish; baking; preserves; sauces and brunch and coffee are yours for the taking from more than 25 stalls. The age-old tradition has a contemporary twist with the convenience of Eftpos on-site. On your way home, stop in to kick back at Kaiapoi's Rivertown Café, 77 Williams Street.

NATIONAL BRAND, LOCAL KNOWLEDGE When a business has a nationwide identity and status, it's easy to assume that you could end up as 'just another number in the system', particularly when said business is in the building industry. Versatile North Canterbury is a refreshing and ambitious exception to that rule.

A

national brand with local knowledge, Versatile North Canterbury represents a team that listens and a brand that cares, building homes that stand the test of time. A misconception about the family owned and operated business is that it limits itself to certain facets of building – not so. “We pride ourselves on flexibility,” Co-owner Nicky Rowley says. “For us, it is about working closely with our client from the outset to ascertain what it is that they want to achieve, and then we ensure we deliver on this. Attention to detail is very important to us.

We can help a client define the look and feel of their home, or make their preexisting vision a reality.” From initial site consultations and advice, through to filing building consents, Nicky and husband Alistair Macrae have a

wealth of experience and connections at their disposal that they can utilise. “The benefit of being a nationwide brand lies in the strength of our network. Of equal importance to us though is that very personalised relationship we have with our local community. We are proud of our work and proud of our roots”. CAPTURING MOMENTS

IN TIME There are precious moments in life, in our own and in those around us, which can easily pass by unnoticed. Catherine Smith from Lasting Expressions Photography captures these moments in her portraits across a lifetime, from maternity and newborn to families and milestone portraits at all ages.

“I

t is a moment in time that will last forever,” Catherine says with her portraiture inspired in part by a treasured image of her own grandmother taken in the 1880s. “It is lovely to have a portrait taken of yourself, simply for your own pleasure and to pass on to others.” Her style is both natural and discrete, with sleeping newborn babies gently draped in fabric and tasteful maternity shots. Clothing choice, and great hair and makeup, are important to obtaining images that look natural and photograph well with Catherine happy to arrange pre-photography makeovers through RJ Artistry. “Meeting with Catherine was an integral part of feeling comfortable with her, choosing the outfits and ensuring that I was confident that I had chosen the right photographer. I felt it was a true collaboration between us both,” says Zani Polson of her recent maternity portraits. “It was a real treat to have my makeup and hair done - I felt pampered and at the end it meant I felt glamorous and confident!”

“It is a moment in time that will last forever.”

For more information, including package deals, visit www.lephoto.co.nz, or visit Catherine on Facebook at “Lasting Expressions - Photography by Catherine Smith”. Phone Catherine on 022 324 5092.

A marriage of future and past You can almost hear the chatter and laughter of the RNZAF officers who once used this building as their Mess. Wigram Base on Henry Wigram Drive was built in 1938 and has a distinctive art deco style. The building is rich with history, but now has a new life that pays homage to its past while looking to the future.

hat a special place for a wedding. Wigram Base has a range of function spaces to suit your “Big Day” – from the beautiful art deco ballroom complete with sprung parquet flooring, to the delightfully sophisticated anteroom with its traditional fireplace and art deco style lighting. In the private gardens of the base is the original St Marks Chapel, perfect for an intimate ceremony followed by champagne and canapés on the lawn amid the roses. Flexibility and adaptability are key words for Wigram Base. Its aim is to suit your requirements. Whether it be a garden ceremony; a cocktail function; a buffet, or a formal seated dinner, it has something to suit your style and budget. The kitchen and management teams have years of experience in the industry looking after big and small events and can take the stress out of planning and running your wedding for you. To make this possible, they have created a range of all-inclusive packages, which can be

tepping inside the ultra-chic Brides of Merivale, it is clear this is a place where romance finds its most beautiful form. From ready made gowns right through to bespoke, one-off creations. Founder and exquisite seamstress Lisa leads a very talented team – Kate, Rochelle and Katherine – always ensuring the seasonal ranges and the essence of the business remains contemporary; intimate; personalised and extremely efficient. “We find ourselves in a unique position in that what we offer most often starts as a blank canvass, and from there, we completely personalise it so the bride has a dress that reflects her individuality.” Regularly attending international bridal events for inspiration, the team is justly proud of its collective ability. “Having an in-store workroom is a real asset. As trained couturieres, we ensure an exact fit with our own clients and can advise on the perfect accessories.” Lisa's key advice to brides this season is to be prepared at least six to seven months in advance to ensure they have the full choice of Brides of Merivale's exclusive ranges.

Wedding politics

By Melinda Collins

You've heard the stories - when normally sweet-natured Emily, that ray of sunshine you've known since high school, suddenly loses all sense of reality.

W

hen speeches are required to be submitted for approval and revision; where to-do lists include weigh-ins and measurements; where there's a moratorium on future tattoos and body piercings and when bed times and certain swimwear attire are strictly enforced. After all, one can't be expected to accommodate puffy eyes and tan lines in one's wedding photos! They are a master class in the jokingbut-not-joking-seriously-DON'T-cut-yourhair-without-my-permission style of friend management. So, how do you deal with bridezilla? How do you combat a dizzying degree of irrationality, extreme diva demands and passive-aggressive power plays?

54 April 7, 2016 Metropol

Here are our tips to keep a bridezilla at bay: 1. Smile and nod. Do your best to meet her outlandish demands. Weddings are transitory so (hopefully) things will return to normal soon and who knows, this could all play out in reverse one day when it's your turn and you might need her to return the favour. 2. Delegate. Firstly, there's safety in numbers. Delegate those diva demands to alleviate your own stress and, better yet, it divides the blame if things 'turn to custard'. 3. Listen. The stress of pulling off perfection can get to anyone, so offer her a shoulder to cry on, an ear to vent to and just be there for her. 4. Negotiate. Ok, if the cost of being a bridesmaid and meeting the bride's demands is going to put you in the poorhouse, it's time to speak up. You don't have to be unkind and if you come to the table with cheaper alternatives she might even thank you.

5. Stay cool, calm and collected. Don't take anything personally right now and try to put yourself in the bride's shoes. She's stressed! If you do need to vent, do it to non-mutual friends – otherwise it will get back to the bride. Always. 6. Distract. I could have replaced the word 'distract' with the word 'wine' but in the essence of being constructive… declare a ceasefire on wedding planning and indulge in a girls' night with the bride and bridesmaids over chocolate, chick flicks and… okay, wine! 7. Be firm. Sometimes a bridezilla simply goes too far. You don't have to be aggressive or confrontational, but stand up for yourself. Let her know you're not going to stand for it, but that you love her and are more than happy to help her if she's willing to chill.

re you brainstorming ideas for a hen's night? Paint 'n' Sip Studio may have solved your problems with its painting studios in Ilam and now in Queenstown. Owner Amanda Anthony started the business in Christchurch after seeing it in her hometown of New Orleans; the concept is a fun, creative and social activity open to all ages varying in artistic abilities. “The idea is you bring a group of friends and paint together in a relaxed artist-led environment, drinks are purchased from our bar and food can be provided, or you bring your own. “Even those who haven't painted before and are a bit skeptical end up loving it by the end of the session - it's very therapeutic. Everyone walks out with a smile on their face and planning their next visit.” Both locations are available for private events and open to everyone to let out their inner artist. Your day your way

Memorable band, unforgettable wedding

T

he spontaneity of a live band is not something everyone gets to experience these days, says Mike Arthur of The Bubblemen. Therefore, a band can really make a wedding day. The Bubblemen's polished performance has been the highlight of many for over 20 years - intuitively keeping the dance floor rocking with well-known numbers. “We are professional to a high-standard, without breaking the bank,” he says. “We're portable and affordable; we have fun doing it, and want people to have fun with us.” The band can enhance the entire day with acoustic ambience in any location. The rock, jazz and blues trio's repertoire spans from the '50s to contemporary, from Little Richard to Justin Bieber. The icing on the cake: The band can learn, within reason, that personal first dance song - although odds are it'll already know it. View the song list at www.thebubblemen.com or phone Mike on 027 556 3252.

Combining their collective talents, the three friends created Lovelight Cinema and Photography in a bid to streamline and simplify the process for brides and grooms, while injecting some fun along the way. “We love getting to know our couples and taking them on adventures to inspire creativity and draw out the raw emotions that are often at play on such a special day,” explains Clinton Lloyd, one third of the dynamic Lovelight trio. “Our signature style is all about candid storytelling while at the same time creating beautiful, unique images and films.” Prepare to be swept away with a little inspiration and a whole lot of love on your big day with the imaging experts at www.lovelight.nz

Bridal blues A radiant By Kate Pierson

smile Photo: Sam Burrow

S

omething about her wedding day invariably ensures that a bride looks her most beautiful and radiant. It is, after all, a very special day and she wants to be as drop-dead gorgeous as possible. But not everything has to be left to nature or to chance. A little help is permissible. That's where Great4Teeth, part of OrthodontiX, the specialist orthodontic practice at 36 Colombo Street in Cashmere comes in. Great4Teeth is delighted to be able to offer brides and grooms cosmetic teeth whitening for $350 per couple, or $199 for one person, a considerable saving on the usual price. The whitening treatment uses the Polus teethwhitening system, one of the world's most advanced and innovative technology and materials to whiten teeth safely, quickly and with maximum results. Should a bride have braces, and is a patient of the practice, OrthodontiX will remove the braces for free for the wedding day and the photos and replace them afterwards. Whitening treatments are by appointment only, so for that “X factor” smile contact Gwen on 355 5855 or email info@great4teeth.co.nz

G

ot the bridal blues? Great, we're thrilled! No, we're not being facetious, we're simply embracing all that the current bridal trends have to offer. In the spirit of an open-mind, we're absolutely loving the baby blues that have hit the sartorial scene. When it comes to dressspiration for your big day, we appreciate that it can be equal parts bold and brave when it comes to abandoning the more familiar traditions, but oh how the possibilities can help you shine like no other. We have it on good authority from our overseas counterparts, that if you'd like to elegantly bail on the status quo then you can't go wrong with a whimsical blue paired with a bold red lip. If taking the plunge into the blue is a bit too much of a statement for you for the formal part of your special day, then perhaps toy with the idea of a reception dress in a decadent shade of this ever-loved primary colour.

Wedding dress magic

flawlessly fitted dress on your wedding day enables you to relax in comfort so everything else will just flow, says Alycen Carter of Sacs Tailoring. Wedding dresses bought online often need altering or embellishing. “We will make it theirs. There's always something we can do. Even if they don't like the dress they bought - just wait and see!” A passionate seamstress all her life, Alycen can sum up a flattering solution on sight. “I assess by looking. You can't teach that.” As a master of change, the talented tailor can transform a mother's wedding dress to even three sizes larger for her daughter or tarnished silk can be replaced with matching new silk. “Resizing and bringing it up to trend is what we're good at. There's always a solution. I want people to come in with a challenge. We literally tailor to your needs,” she says. The perfect plan

W

hen speaking with the founder of CM Event Management – Chloe Miller – it's hard not to feel incredibly excited and immediately reassured. The impressive impression she makes may owe to her wealth of experience in an industry she was clearly born to work in. But it's also a lot to do with her unwavering desire to do the absolute best she can, ensuring her clients have the special occasion that dreams are made of. Having “flourished” and come into her own professionally when planning her wedding, Chloe has taken a rare marriage of skills – the ability to delve into the details while also remaining focused on the bigger picture – and graced the Canterbury events market with her presence. “I truly believe an event like a wedding doesn't need to be stressful and that's my primary goal in what I do – enabling my clients to feel no sense of burden so they can completely enjoy the day. “I have such an innate passion for dealing with people and I love to come up with bespoke options for them. I can help them to define their vision, or if they already have a concept, I can bring it to life.”

Contemporary looks, traditional service The Christchurch culinary and nightlife stomping ground was flipped on its head when Mother Nature rumbled dramatically beneath us. But, like a Phoenix from the Ashes, the creatively bold and restless – like Mama Hooch eatery, café and lounge – are embracing the opportunity to rock the socks off of Christchurch's social scene once again.

P

arents to the wildly popular Venuti, the team has now breathed life into Mama Hooch - a very striking marriage between contemporary looks and feel and traditional, personal service. A wonderful wining and dining synergy exists between Venuti and Mama Hooch whereby late night diners or those who want to spontaneously socialise can enjoy a drink at the waiting bar at Mama Hooch while waiting for a table at Venuti. Alternatively, they can have an early drink at Mama Hooch before enjoying a late dinner there. In the spirit of great partnerships, Mama Hooch has been revelling in its role as a

beautiful backdrop for brides and grooms to be. With its indoor/alfresco wining and dining options; its sweet tunes; service that is second-to-none and its comehither look (think industrial meets chic); it's the distilled essence of what a perfect host aspires to be. During a time in which lifetime memories are made, Mama Hooch is working hard to flex its creative muscle to ensure celebrations are simply but significantly occasions that etch themselves in guests memories. From speciality wines and cocktails romancing the tastebuds through to a generous list of bottled craft beers, there is something

A bonafide culinary rock star, Mama Hooch knows how to push the boundaries with its light bites and heartier offerings – from the moreish popcorn chicken to the piggy burger that stands to befriend even the most discerning diner – Mama Hooch's food has it going on, big time. If you're thinking events, think Mama Hooch. We can also excitedly divulge that it is also holding its popular Pink Ribbon event again in 2016 so keep an eye out for further information. The beautiful butterfly

By Kate Pierson

The butterfly is the distilled essence of beauty and the same goes for the butterfly sleeve when it comes to bridal gowns.

T

he flattering feature is a stunning compromise between no sleeves and a full sleeve. It provides just the right amount of coverage to the arm with the potential for it to be one of the most compelling statements on your gown. From broderie anglaise through to heavily embellished caps, we've fallen truly-madly-deeply in love with what a stylish sleeve has to offer. When you opt for a sleeve, it also literally opens up the options for your gown – a more modest sleeve can provide an opportunity to embrace a lower back. We're particularly biased when it comes to an off-the-shoulder, slim sleeve giving the opportunity to majorly merchandise up this look with some stunning statement jewellery. It's our feeling that designers will be hard pressed to innovate something that will knock this gem off its pretty perch. We've included some bridal inspo for you to dream the day away.

HANMER SPRINGS

HANMER SPRINGS STEALING THE SHOW

Hanmer Springs is enjoying a surge in visitor numbers after the opening of a new spa and shopping centre.

M

ore than 100,000 people visited Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa between Boxing Day last year and the end of January 2016 - a new record for that period. February was also busy with more than 40,000 visitors 29% of them from overseas. The pools' General Manager, Graeme Abbot, says there are several reasons for the high visitor numbers. “We've been doing a lot of work in attracting offshore markets to the village – particularly China and Australia. The numbers for February (during the Chinese New Year holiday period) show that's paying off. “Also, new developments have been

drawing in the local market. The Village Shopping Centre was built on Conical Hill Road late in 2015 - it is already proving popular as is Artisan Spa that opened within it.” Owned and operated by the pools, Artisan Spa has a real focus on creating visibly beautiful skin using both natural and scientifically proven products. It is also one of just a handful of spas across New Zealand to have the Observe520 Skin Analysis machine. “It's a remarkable piece of equipment that uses different types of light to look beneath the surface layer of the skin. The machine then identifies hydration levels, pigmentation, oil flow and the like. It can

literally predict what your skin will look like in future years,” Graeme says. Artisan Spa is helping cement Hanmer Springs' reputation as New Zealand's alpine spa village. “We have more than a dozen operators now offering health and wellness services – everything from massage and body treatments to acupuncture, bowen and pascha therapy and Botox injections. “With such passionate operators, I have no doubt Hanmer Springs will continue to grow and attract even more people for both spa and retail therapy. After all, there is no better place to get away to, relax and unwind.”

WHISKY AND WHISKEY By Nicholas Henare

I had an invitation come through on my phone: “You are cordially invited to join the next meeting of the Lyttleton Whisky Appreciation Society”.

T

he excitement was tangible. An organisation more select and secretive than the Freemasons had finally decided to initiate me into its fold. But before we delve into that, let's get a background on the amber Aqua Vitae. If it's from Scotland it is 'Whisky', if it's from Ireland it would be 'Whiskey'. Distilled for hundreds of years in both countries, traditionally from maize or barley, every bottle has a unique set of flavours, aroma and quality. Bottles are sought on quality, rarity and age and there's a strong market for financial gain and the pleasure of drinking. If you're buying for investment and you stuff it up, you can still drink it. Dram Fest, New Zealand's Premier Whisky Festival was held here in February. Drawing people from all over the world, it was a massive success. I caught up with Michael F. Fraser Milne from Whisky Galore to chat about the increase of interest in the drink. “Go back 15 years and it was predominantly males 40 plus, now there's a new 20-plus group, and that includes females, taking it seriously. There's a very broad range of people you wouldn't expect finding more and more pleasure in learning about Whisky.” With exports $4.7 billion from Whisky in Scotland alone, it's a thriving business. Lyttleton Whisky Appreciation Society isn't operating in isolation either. Allegedly, there are various groups across town repeating this ritual on a monthly basis. The society has a floating number at any gathering between 10 and 20 people. As an inductee, you must bring something good to the table. The right mix of burnt caramel or peaty goodness to excite the others. I took a 12-year-old bottle of Dalmore 12 hoping it would find favour. With a mix of arts and food people the night was a great success and the conversation was lively. Oysters; smoked salmon; delicious steak and 12 variants of Whisky were tried and tested. In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope that the covenant continues with the group for the most ordinary Whisky can be exceptional in the right company.

From the pen of the tiger THE 'SLOW FOOD, FAST' C PHILOSOPHY Great grub is an unequivocal asset to New Zealand. It'd also be fair to say that cuisine has taken a compelling step outside the square in Christchurch post-earthquake as innovators throw creative caution to the wind.

G

reat food with a point of different is certainly the professional mantra of Fine Fare Kitchen (FFK) at the container hub on Victoria Street. Created by merino exporter, Wayne Cameron, Fine Food Kitchen is all about slow-cooked food, served fast. Cameron saw an opportunity for affordable restaurant-quality food that can either be taken home or enjoyed with a fine wine al fresco. He then partnered up with Executive Chef Simon Levy whom he met at the end of 2014, sharing compatible aspirations around food. The concept for Fine Fare Kitchen was fine-tuned and they opened at the end of June 2015. “We were drawn together with a passion for good food and creating standout dishes from fresh seasonal produce,” Cameron adds. “We work hard to offer the best of the region. It's really important to us to understand our suppliers and be able to see how everything is grown sustainably, respectfully and above all else to maximise the flavor.” This extends to Cameron himself who has his own (small) merino flock that he runs in local orchards and vineyards specifically for FFK. “At Fine Fare Kitchen we are passionate about slow cooking, it allows for more interesting cuts of meat to be used - cuts that are generally sweeter and develop greater depth of flavour from longer cooking.” Fine Fare Kitchen works out of a kitchen based in a container; guests read a blackboard menu to place orders, and most of the meats are slow cooked and can be delivered quickly. Check out the options at 99 Victoria Street or online at www.finefarekitchen.co.nz

orianders St Asaph Street commands attention for its glorious presence. From the stunning outdoor setting featuring coloured lighting and cosy heating to its first-class decor, the glamorous restaurant offers an inviting experience. The highly professional staff members are attentive from start to finish, greeting you like royalty. Knowledgeable and gracious, they ensure you feel entirely immersed in the second-to-none ‘Corianders experience’. The comprehensive menu is rich in options. For the less experienced or more adventurous guest, the team makes inspiring recommendations based on your preferred tastes. My table was presented with a refreshing Te Hana Sparkling Reserve Cuvee and the ‘Chef’s Special’ tantalising Tandoori Platter to start. The assorted lamb, fish, and chicken simply melted in the mouth and roared with flavour. The main course offered Murg Kadai; Lamb Posht; Vegetable Jalfrezee, and Goa Fish Malabari - distinct, diverse and delicious in aroma and taste. Gorgeous rice and naan are the perfect accompaniment. The charm of the atmosphere leaves you wanting more. Order another drink, enjoy the company you’re with, and relish the occasion. AUTUMN’S TASTY ENTRANCE

ARANCINI Arancini, named after the little oranges that these fried rice balls are said to resemble, are well known as a handy way to use up leftover risotto. They found their way to The Villas and we feature our take on the Arancini in our platter selections available for our group bookings. For a simple version of our Portobello and Porcini Arancini, the ingredients and method are below. (Makes 10 medium balls)

The heart of autumn is drawing closer and the days are getting shorter, but that's no reason to stay home when you have a venue like The Villas on your doorstep.

W

ith its welcoming atmosphere and Victorian charm, The Villas provides Cantabrians with the ideal venue for dining and relaxing through the winter months. Famed for its fabulous food, extensive beverage list, and all day dining, this iconic city favourite, housed in adjoining Yellow and Blue Villas, is perfect for functions and groups from four to 44 or more. Whether it's a private room for a family gathering, after work drinks, or a larger space for a corporate event or social club gathering, the recently renovated buildings offer flexible and spacious options to accommodate your group. Food options include selections of canapes and snacks made on-site, or tailored set menus can be arranged for a more formal event. The hardworking team of chefs is preparing to launch new menus for the winter, with dinner being the first new release just last weekend. New menu sensations include the celery and cider braised pork belly, served with roast parsnips, burnt apple jus and chestnut. The venison en croute, Canterbury lamb shoulder and the duck confit will rival this culinary frontrunner along with the rest of the well thought out and balanced menu selections. As always, only the freshest New Zealand produce features, with local ingredients used wherever possible. With a wide selection of craft beers; hand-picked New Zealand, Australian and European wines; friendly staff, and a relaxed setting, an evening at The Villas is an evening very well spent. Head to the website www.thevillas.co.nz, or call 365 6066 to secure your table.

CUISINE

Ingredients: 800ml chicken or vegetable stock 250g of leftover risotto rice (or arborio rice, cooked and cooled will do) 1/2 tsp salt Very generous pinch of saffron 50g parmesan or vegetarian alternative, grated 150g mozzarella, chopped into chunks 150g of fresh sautéed portobello & porcini mushrooms 1 egg 170g plain flour 500g dried breadcrumbs Vegetable oil, to cook

Method: • If you are using leftover risotto, skip the following step • Otherwise, bring the stock to the boil in a medium pan then add the rice, salt and saffron. Bring back to the boil; turn down the heat and simmer on a medium heat until stock is absorbed. Stir in the grated parmesan and season to taste, then leave to cool completely, (spread it out on a tray and place in fridge to hasten this if necessary) • Stir the mozzarella into the cool rice and check the seasoning. Roll a tablespoonful between wet palms to form a ball of your chosen size. Poke a hole in the middle and spoon your filling in. Plug the hole with extra rice. Repeat until all the rice is used up • Beat together the egg, flour and enough water to make a thick batter (about 175ml), and season. Put the breadcrumbs on to a plate • Heat the oil in a deep pan, no more than a third full, to 170C, or until a breadcrumb sizzles on contact. As it is heating, dip each rice ball in the batter to coat, then into the breadcrumbs, heaping them on top until it is well covered • Cook in batches until golden brown, making sure the oil comes back up to temperature between batches, and drain on kitchen towel • Sprinkle with a little salt while still warm and serve hot or cold.

t's good news then that the creative genius of Moroccan-born chef, Simo Abbari, has been channelled into a new culinary charmer - Simo's Mediterranean Marinades. If you want to serve up meals that'll see you blushing up a storm as the compliments roll in thick and fast from grateful guests, then the new range will happily work its charm for you. For the rst time on New Zealand shelves, shoppers can enjoy the richly aromatic avour of herbs and spices blended into a marinade with Simo's Mediterranean Marinades. The Mediterranean Marinades are a range of four, including a vegetarian option. The Mediterranean Fish option is rich in coriander; cumin; parsley and dill, with a tang of chilli and ginger and cayenne pepper to add a peppy kick. The Mediterranean Lamb and Beef Marinade has cinnamon; rosemary; coriander and paprika, while the Mediterranean Chicken Marinade is redolent with turmeric, parsley and garlic. While the marinades draw heavily on Simo's North African and Mediterranean heritage for their intense avour, the ingredients are high quality, and locally sourced. Simo has lovingly crafted each marinade with a bit of help from a food scientist to get the avour, texture and taste just right. Check 'em out at the Christchurch Food Show, Horncastle Arena from 8-10 April. Simo will be at Stand G7 where you will be able to sample the range of Mediterranean Marinades.

HOME EXTERIORS INTERIORS BUILDING OUTDOORS KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

ROOM REVIVAL TIPS By Majka Kaiser

As the seasons change, it is time to take stock and reassess our private sanctuaries before the leaves begin to fall and winter settles in. Revive tired spaces with these affordable tips. 1. One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to update your home for the change in seasons and drop in temperature are textiles. Naturally you'll find yourself reaching for the thicker duvet and bed linen when the mercury plummets, so it makes sense to change some of your lighter, more summery cushion covers and throws to mirror the darker days and cooler nights. Look at introducing richer hues and heavier-weighted fabrics.

Muuto Sandberg

2. Wallpapers and paint are naturally a great way to transform any space in your home. Turn to your existing furniture and furnishings for direction when it comes to choosing colours and patterns that will complement what you already have. 3. Inject some personality into your space by adding artwork, found objects and curiosities to your walls, bookshelves and windowsills. Edit new, well-chosen items, grouping them together for maximum impact. 4. Not just for vanity, mirrors are an excellent way to introduce more light into your home and create the illusion of space. Place a mirror directly opposite a window to instantly add more light and brighten dark rooms. 5. Potted plants are an ideal way to soften hard edges of furniture and add relief to an otherwise dull space.

HAPPY HABITATS

HOME

By Majka Kaiser

You've found the one; the one you want to wake up to, share your morning cup of Joe with and snuggle up to each night, but moving in with your true love can often bring out the worst in each of us when amalgamating our treasured possessions to form a happy little love nest.

A

void the emotional minefield by accepting the fact that you will most likely have to make some decisions around what to hold onto and what you can live without. Be prepared to part with some of your possessions and your significant other is bound to be much more responsive to letting go of theirs. For couples with wildly different styles, fear not, for with a little finesse and tact, you can merge your two flavours seamlessly so both you and your partner, as well as your décor, can co-exist in perfect harmony. Approach your decor decisions the same way you'd resolve any challenge in your relationship; be open minded to your other's perspective and look for ways to negotiate a successful outcome. Interior experts who have experience working with couples entering co-habitation suggest starting with one major piece that you can both agree on, like a sofa, and use this as a foundation upon which to build. Making decisions together, especially on big-ticket items like sofas and dining tables, is essential. Not only does it show respect, but it's also a great way to feel like a team, so enjoy the process.

Integrating two unique personal styles when cohabiting may present a new learning curve in your relationship, but it is possible without spelling the end. Use a large piece you both agree on as a starting point and build from there. BoråsTapeter

HOMES STYLED TO SELL Ohoka Design can make the ordinary look extraordinary.

I

nterior designer Viv Bradbury and her daughter, Jess Blakely, were asked to style a friend's home for sale. The word got around; now their boutique homestyling and interior design business has flourished. The professional perfectionists say first impressions are formed in seconds. Australian real estate companies all use home staging, Jess says. “Christchurch is now getting on board. Photos of your home now need to stand out from the competition.” The talented duo provides double the value with Viv as the furnitureplacing professional and Jess the expert in accessorising and embellishing. “It's hard to look at your own home objectively. A fresh pair of eyes with focus on selling the house is invaluable.” “We are not trend followers – we

have our own classic style,” Viv says. “We do it in such a way that you can't tell it's staged.” The duo specialise in family homes that are arranged to look livable, practical and welcoming. Elegant neutrals and blends of colour take into account the age, style and size of the house. “The majority of people can't visualise how empty rooms can be furnished. Correct furniture placing will create a feeling of space – and space is so important.” Providing clients with flexibility, often a few rugs, lamps and cushions is all it takes with advice on what to remove or add – or they can cleverly dress an entire home. Viv and Jess' skill as interior designers is also called upon to enhance the new family home. A showcase of their talents and testimonials can be viewed at www.ohokadesign.co.nz

hen you kick back in your comfort zone at the end of a demanding day, do it in style. Whoever said you need to compromise when it comes to comfort versus style clearly hadn't sat in one of these babies – a bean bag. In the back of your mind, the concept of a beanbag for furniture may have long been affiliated with your younger days, but we can assure you they're making a big-time comeback, and have been for some time now. Perhaps it's their infinite generosity when it comes to supporting all the right spots as you hit the floor in a 'very gracious' heap, but it's most likely that they can be an uber-cool addition to any abode and moved here, there or anywhere. Keep an eye out for options that have a stylish split personality – an in and outdoor option in other words.

e can't deny that neutrals are the crème de la crème this season, but our philosophy is that rules are made to be broken and boundaries smashed when it comes to style. And, fact is, pops of colour are also making a bit of a splash despite neutrals ruling the roost. Here's our compromise a bold, bright statement piece that breaks up the monotony of living areas. Be adventurous and source a funky oral piece or even a chair upholstered in mismatching fabrics juxtaposition can be a great friend when it comes to aesthetics don't be afraid to get little bit wild. If you fancy yourself a bit of an innovator, why not opt for upcycling taking a piece like a chair that has seen better days and restoring it. erhaps it's the sense of mystery, or the bling-bling factor (probably both), but Moroccan inspired décor in the home can be absolutely magic. We have ventured in to the bustling souqs (open-air markets) in Marrakech - breathing in the fragrant spices; partaking in the competitive sales banter, and basically fawning all over what feels like a cave of Aladdin's finest treasures. To that end, we have spied some delicious Moroccan style lanterns while out on our style-seeking missions and we wanted to share our eclectic inspiration with you. True this is a bold look that is not for everyone or every home, but in the right setting, an exquisite lantern – indoors or outdoors – is capable of eliciting an envious response from friends who will beg to know which treasure trove you raided to uncover something so unique.

ITALIAN TRENDS NEW ZEALAND STYLE They may be manufactured on the other side of the world, but the very latest in Italian tiling is a perfect fit for contemporary New Zealand designs. Naturally Tiles has been dealing direct with its Italian manufacturers for over 20 years, providing fresh and innovative products at great prices. Jenny Swanson-Edwards and Patsy Price

N

ew European trends see a Panaria's natural mixed-shade wood look, or exposed concrete, and the soft flowing sandstone feel of Ariana. Collections mix varying shades and shapes together on floors and walls, with feature tiles used to define spaces in dining rooms and bathrooms. “A tile is a piece of art on its own,” Design Consultant Jenny says. “Every tile is purposely designed to have a slight variation in its look.” Naturally Tiles has a great selection to choose from in-store, as well as a bespoke service to source any tile from its manufacturers range. While some customers know exactly what they are looking for, many others come with only a basic idea of what they want to create. Jenny and her colleague Patsy work with each customer to understand what their vision is for their space, with an inspirational piece particularly helpful in this process. They offer a free-of-charge design consultation in the home or business, looking at how the tiled area will work within the interior as a whole, and with any exterior hard landscaping. Phone Jenny and Patsy at Naturally Tiles on 343 0933 or visit naturallytiles.co.nz for more information.

NOT ALL HOMES ARE CREATED EQUAL It's an exciting process to watch your home being built; it's also a blast to design.

o stand amongst the frames; look out the window and see how the light enters the room; to notice the little details that make it yours and special to you - it's a great feeling. Then there's the difficult decisions like whether to have a wine on the deck or soak in the bath; relaxed and feeling like you're on holiday without leaving home. That's what building a home is about – fun, pleasure and the realisation that being in a spa on the deck with a wine is a much better idea. To make this happen, you have choices to make... Our first step with a new project is to ensure the client understands the value of partnering with the right builder. Communication and trust are paramount but so too is having the right relationship. The benefit of Bespoke's position and heritage in the market is that we have the experience to help our clients make an informed decision. Communication and trust are paramount but so too is having the right relationship. quality of the builders out there, as well as insight to their historical projects. People need to be absolutely sure when it comes to their design and build team – I tell clients not to be afraid to ask for references; examples of previous work; further details about the contract; what insurances they have in place. I also recommend that people look to engage an independent Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor or both – this decision can be invaluable. With all the above in mind, you won't just have a house; you will have the peace of mind and satisfaction of knowing that a team of people who share your enthusiasm have created the quality that is your home. www.bespoke-architecture.co.nz

GETTING LITTLE THINGS SORTED The steady drip of a tap or a slowly leaking water cylinder; the little jobs are as important as the big ones when it comes to Layne Watson Plumbing Limited (LWPL).

WPL is a family run business, established by Layne and Emma Watson back in 2003.
