've been accused of it, and I confess, at times in my life I've been guilty of it. I'm talking about the new 'n' word – nice, as in too nice. As in Australian cricketer Brad Haddin's interpretation of the word nice when he said the Australian team had been discomfited by New Zealand's 'niceness'. Has this 'n' word transitioned into a different meaning like ‘wicked’ meaning excellent/awesome and ‘sick’ meaning crazy/cool? Is ‘nice’ morphing into the new way to say 'subtly intimidating'? Most Kiwis are nice as in 'good, ok, cool, fun'. We are courteous and gracious and I like that about us. We also have a dash of naughtiness in us and being naughty and nice is quite an alluring mix. Considering people's personalities, they quite often clearly fall into a naughty or nice category. My list of naughty people would be something like: Paul Henry, Jeremy Clarkson, Nigella Lawson, Graeme Rose, Ma'a Nonu and Jack Nicholson… My nice list would be: Pippa Wetzell, Tom Hanks, Marcus Lush, Jamie Oliver, Roger Federer and Matt Damon. The thing is that both of these naughty and nice lists include people I really like, they're people who appeal to me; their unique personalities stand out and they clearly have a mix of both 'n' words at respectively disproportionate levels. Are you naughty or nice? Or a good Kiwi mix of the two? Whatever, I think we should embrace a little of both and remember that thankfully neither are tangled up in any way with that awful 'a' word – arrogant.

aralee Caldwell is a Kiwi who grew up in a small town in the far north of New Zealand. Like many of us she had a negative relationship with food and her body image. She tried every fad diet imaginable, counted calories, bought meals, shakes, pills and “worse” she says. Caralee lives in the Gold Coast now with her husband and three children. She studied law in her late twenties and loves being a lawyer but through all of this she still felt unhealthy and bloated. She knew something had to change around her diet and eating habits and so she decided to eat only 'real foods'. This has taken her on a journey that thousands of people from around the world have followed via her blog realfoodpledge.com and now she has launched her first cook book of the same name. I stumbled across her website and after perusing recipes such as raw lemon and coconut slice, and scallops topped with bacon and apple crumble, I had to find out more about this naturally talented foodie…

What is 'real' food to you? For me, real food is about keeping it simple and uncomplicated. If it is grown by nature, it is real food, opposed to if it is made in a factory, then it's processed. Think about the foods our Great Grandparents ate, fruit, veggies, meats, seafood and eggs – hardly anything from a packet. Your recipes are gluten, grain, sugar and mostly dairy free; what is your view on food intolerances in modern life? It makes sense that we humans could have trouble digesting some of the modern processed, unnatural and genetically modified foods available today. Our bodies are made to eat natural food. My thoughts are if the food you are eating doesn't make you feel good or it creates a reaction, then it's best not to eat it. This is my experience, so I stay away from the foods that make me feel yucky. How long have you and your family been eating this way? I have been eating this way since 2013. My husband Cameron took a little convincing, but when he saw how much happier and healthier I was he followed my lead in the beginning of 2014.

What differences have you and your family noticed after changing your diet to real food? The differences for me are huge, no more tummy problems, much easier weight management, I sleep a lot better and I feel fantastic and energised all the time. My husband dropped 10kg with little effort, it just fell off and he has kept it off quite easily.

Which are your top three favourite recipes? My absolute favourite recipe in the book is the lemon and coconut tart! Following that I love the pumpkin pancakes and the pork with onion and apple chutney. You are coming to The Christchurch Food Show this year what can visitors expect in The Healthy Hub area of the show? I am so excited about attending the Christchurch Food Show. I have lots of followers from Christchurch and it will be fantastic to meet everyone in person. I will be talking all things 'real food' as well as whipping up 'no bake' recipes and showing everyone how easy it is to make beautiful raw desserts and treats that are healthy. Is it difficult to change family habits to eating as you do? Not really, because the kids can only eat what you provide. So if we don't buy ice cream and instead we make ice cream out of fruit, they are happy with that. They actually love getting in the kitchen and creating with me. I think their generation are so much more educated about healthy choices than I was. Your recipes are truly inspiring and impressively original; have you always been interested in food? I am a Kiwi so a love and interest in food is a natural state for us, it's our culture. We love food, we love cooking, we love eating and you know what.... we do food really well! I cooked and created recipes from when I was very young as my parents encouraged us to cook.

On a more personal note, what is your proudest achievement? Going to university with three kids in tow and becoming a lawyer at the age of 34 is probably up there. Then of course I love my blog and book, but that is my passion and it comes together a lot more easily. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Finish school and stop eating junk food! What is your favourite drink? My husband's home-made margaritas! They are the best but I save them for a special treat once in a while. What were you doing the last time the

thought went through your mind, “I shouldn't be doing this”? Eating a HUGE piece of Key Lime Pie in Hawaii. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I have never been to Christchurch before. I went to Nelson when I was four and that is the furthest South I have ever been, so I am very excited to see, smell, eat, touch and feel Christchurch for my self. What do you love to do on a Sunday afternoon? I love going for a bike ride on my retro mint coloured cruiser bike, it makes me feel like I am 16 again.

Volunteers countrywide, including hundreds of servicemen and women, are preparing for their vital role as collectors for the Returned and Services Association (RSA) annual Poppy Day appeal on Friday 17 April. RSA National President BJ Clark said that the Gallipoli centenary makes this year's appeal particularly special. “We also celebrate the RSA's centenary in 2016 so there is a tremendous sense of history and the many people the RSA has helped,” said Mr Clark. Funds raised through Poppy Day support the RSA's work on behalf of former and current servicemen and women. Its support advisors across the country help war veterans, ex-servicemen and women, their spouses/partners, widows/widowers and dependants, whether or not they are RSA members. The RSA also provides help for overseas veterans now resident in New Zealand. Celebrating the past and future The new Christchurch Returned Services Association Memorial building is open in time for the 100th anniversary celebrations of Anzac Day. Devastated by the February 2011 earthquake, the original clubrooms were the first RSA facility in New Zealand. The replacement building on the same central city site is not only a memorial to those who gave their lives, but a modern facility that welcomes veterans and the general public. A defining feature of the project is the 11 steelbladed columns that stand on the Northern edge of the central plaza forming an open colonnade to the street. “They are symbolic of the Armistice Day agreement signed at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month and ended the fighting in the First World War,” says project architect Simon Brown. Brown says that architects Warren and Mahoney was conscious to deliver a building that paid due respect to a rich military history and became a destination that engages the street and makes a striking first impression. Quality materials including limestone

cladding and terrazzo flooring bring a sense of solidity, while extensive, full-height glazing allows the transparency appropriate to a public venue. On the ground floor, the fully licensed Trenches Restaurant and Bar is a new addition to the dining scene, with tables spilling out into the sheltered Memorial Plaza. Rotating displays of Canterbury and New Zealand military memorabilia will be on display in the restaurant.

– A Brief Comedy

Following the successful season of Ladies for Hire, Riccarton Players has announced their new season of Knickers a comedy by Sarah Quick. Knickers has 'the delicious gossipy attitude of The Women, the outrageous money-making scenario of Calendar Girls, and the hilarious climatic finale of The Full Monty,” writes a Canadian reviewer. Sarah Quick's comedy earned a standing ovation at its world premiere in Port Stanley. The play was originally set in an Ontario town after the local mill shuts down, putting many out of work. When local director, Christina Stachurski, read the script she knew it would translate well into a New Zealand setting. “With the playwright's permission, we've re-set Knickers in Mataura in Southland,” she said. “And we've enjoyed working out the Kiwiana equivalents to the folksy small town aspects of the play.” “It seems that politicians, bureaucrats and management-speak are the same worldwide, so Christchurch people will enjoy Knickers' satire as well,” said Christina. Art with a social message An artistic billboard with a social message has been installed in an empty section on Barbadoes Street. Called 'The Visit', the temporary artwork has been designed by Parklands resident and communications specialist Megan Blakie. “I wanted something for commuters to reflect on while they're stuck in traffic or walking to work,” says Megan. “I hope the billboard challenges people to think about custodianship of the earth and how we're treating each other and the planet.” Funding for the art installation was donated

through the fundraising website Givealittle. The billboard is located at 377 Barbadoes Street, but will be relocated to another site in the Central city shortly.

Guests of honour were Consul General Jin Zhijian and his wife Helen, Consul General Economic and Commercial Affairs Jianghong (Frank) Fan and his wife Grace. Everyone present had some connection with China ranging from private business, travel, expatriate and trade associations prompting collegial discussions of common interest in a relaxed and informal manner.

Sense of Place The spellbinding Silver-Garburg Piano Duo returns to Christchurch to combine forces with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in the second of the Lamb & Hayward Masterworks series on April 18. Sense of Place furthers the theme of identity set out in the first of the CSO's Masterworks series, opening with Benjamin Britten's Four Sea Interludes which portrays the everchanging moods of the ocean, a constant companion of all New Zealanders, and then continuing on with Bohuslav Martinu Concerto for Two Pianos H.292, with Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg. Martinu composed the concerto in 1943, shortly after he moved to the United States from Czechoslovakia. The music touches on a range of musical influences, including jazz, tango and bohemian folk, reflecting the colourful diverse identities of the immigrants who uprooted their lives and set sail for the New World in the 1930s and 40s. “We are very happy to come back to play in Christchurch for a second

time,” said Gil Garburg. “We look forward to playing the very demanding Martinu concerto with this wonderful ensemble of excellent musicians.” The concert is on April 18, 7.30 pm, at the Charles Luney Auditorium. Tickets are available from Eventfinda.

When the Victorian era meets science ction the result is Steampunk, by nature quirky, fun and very creative.

teampunk is celebrated in all its diverse glory at Clockwork Emporium and Café, with the creative aesthetic that it offers exactly what proprietors Mike and Paula wanted to share when the Emporium opened just over a year ago. “It all started with a birthday party,” says Mike of their own Steampunk journey. An avid reader of sci- and steampunk novels, his Steampunkthemed birthday party was all it took for both he and Paula to become fascinated with the genre. They both wear it well – corsets and rufed shirts, and long shorts with braces, completed with hats and goggles, and pieces from Paula's jewellery range, Muse Jewellery Design. It was while looking for retailers suitable for her line of jewellery that the couple rst discussed a Steampunkinspired store. Originally from Mexico, Paula has been making jewellery for over nine years, with this slowly evolving into Muse's Steampunk and vintage look. “A lot of it is repurposed,” says Paula. “Most are made from recycled vintage watch mechanisms.” Paula imports USSR made '60s and '70s era watches from the Ukraine, adding coloured stones and handpainted glass to create stunningly detailed and unique pieces of jewellery. With Muse Jewellery Design as its basis, the idea of the Emporium grew to

include their own clothing range of corsets, waistcoats, locally made clothing, accessories such as goggles and bow ties, ne wool and tweed hats from Hills Hats in Wellington, and a selection of ray guns from Flint Lock and Hanley Soloway (NZ Steampunk creators), along with refreshments from Belo Coffee Trading Company and Wildower Botanicals Steampunk teas. “One thing we've learned is that you really cannot tell who will appreciate it,” says Paula, with many who wander into the Emporium encountering the style for the rst time. “I have 18 corsets – for me corsets are like shoes,” says Paula, with the store offering a huge range up to size 26, from full to under bust, in rich Steampunk-style or light oral. “They look great with jeans - they give you shape, support you and make you feel fantastic.”

“And it's not just for Steampunks,” says Mike. “It's something you can dress up your everyday street clothes with, like Steampunk cufflinks with business shirts to create a unique look.” Steampunk-themed weddings are a big thing at the moment say Mike and Paula, with many guests visiting the Emporium looking for help with their look, or for gifts. “It's all about upcycling and most people have elements of clothing they can start with,” says Mike, “adding small pieces such as cufflinks, hats or goggles, waistcoats for the men, corsets for the ladies, or even crafting full outfits.”From his seat on a bench outside the Emporium's door Mike takes in the view along New Regent Street. He chats with those who pass by, the regulars and newcomers fresh off the tram, the curious and the fans. Creative repurposing is core to the genre and part of what attracts Mike to Steampunk. His costume 'Agent 24' stands in the window, complete with large ray gun. It won a placing in the Steampunk Fashion Show at the annual Steampunk NZ Festival in Oamaru two years ago. Paula and Mike will be making the trip south for the festival again this year, along with many other members from the Steampunk Christchurch community. The festival runs over Queen's Birthday weekend (28 May – 1 June) with readings, performances, markets, dinners, dancing and more, and newcomers are always made especially welcome. “There is something about Steampunk – you go to an event and everyone talks,” says Paula. “Something about dressing up, and being creative, really opens people up.” Clockwork Emporium and Café is open daily on New Regent Street for coffee and Steampunk awesomeness from 10am – 5pm, and late nights for most theatre evenings. Capturing a moment Jessica Gunn has always been drawn to humanity in the world of art. While a tree is still a tree from any angle, she finds inspiration in the ever changing human form as it breathes, moves, thinks and stands.

ive drawing first caught her attention as a young secondary school art student, and stayed with Jessica when she travelled overseas and had the rare opportunity to attend fashion shows in Paris. With a fashion background she drew what she saw – the fabulous garments and the shapes and silhouettes of the women who wore them. With only a pencil and brush Jessica is now creating pieces of art which capture not only a figure and fabric, but also a very special moment in time. “It's such a privileged moment,” says Jessica, who meets with brides-to-be while they are fitted for their wedding gown, observing and drawing the way each moves and the way the dress fits around her. “When I draw, my intention is to record a significant and unique moment - I witness a precious and very personal time that will not be repeated,” says Jessica. “I am not drawing a portrait, rather I am observing the particular character and the exceptional way that person presents themselves to the world, consciously or unconsciously.” With a Bachelor of Fine Arts behind her, Jessica's work includes ink and wash images, using wash to show lightness of fabric, and the darker ink to give detail and texture. here is one element that all couples must have when they are getting married â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an authorised and registered person to perform the service. Independent marriage celebrants in New Zealand are people from the community appointed by the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Only people appointed for this role and whose names appear in the list of marriage celebrants in the New Zealand Gazette or at www.bdm.govt.nz, have the authority to solemnise civil marriages in this country.

Choosing the celebrant is an important decision because a celebrant can make a significant difference to the outcome of a ceremony. Couples should look back on their ceremony for eternity with warm memories because they have worked with their celebrant to craft a ceremony that reflects their values and beliefs, and that is unique and personal to them. To achieve this there needs to have developed a relationship of trust and openness between the couple and the celebrant. A top celebrant expects to be

a celebrant “checked out” by couples to see if the rapport is there to achieve the special outcome they have in mind. Only then should the development of the ceremony begin. Getting to know a couple closely so as to capture their essence is at the heart of a top celebrant's approach. The celebrant then acts as the weaver of all the strands of information and of the couple's wishes and desires that come out of their discussions. The resulting ceremony should be as individual as is each couple. It should be appropriate to their backgrounds and circumstances. It should be authentic, personal and genuine, while including the obligatory legal aspects. This type of ceremony not only completely engages the couple, but just as importantly it engages the guests because it accurately depicts the couple and their love for each other. The difference between a middle-of-theroad celebrant and a great celebrant is striking. Do your homework to find the one who is right for you.

Is an engagement ring necessary? No. However the wedding ring is usually an integral part of the wedding ceremony. Does the formal invitation to a church wedding require an answer? No. but it is a matter of courtesy to reply. How many ushers are needed? Usually estimate one usher for each 50 guests. Who handles the celebrant's fee? The groom pays the fee, but the best man presents it to the celebrant, in a plain white envelope, either before or after the ceremony. Which side of the church is to be reserved for the bride's family and friends? The left is for the bride, the right for the groom. Can a house wedding be just as formal as a church wedding? Yes, but there are usually not as many attendants. May guests be invited to the reception and not the wedding? Yes, if the ceremony is to be attended by only relatives and close friends. You'll find aubergines are still available in stores and this 'parcel' recipe by the Akaroa Cooking School is a great way to prepare them. They make a tasty entrée and can be made well in advance and kept in the fridge until ready to serve. Just pop them in the oven until the cheese starts to melt and serve immediately.

Roasted Aubergine Parcels with Mozzarella, Sundried Tomatoes & Pesto Ingredients: 2 large aubergines sliced length ways in 1cm strips (you will need 8 slices in total) Olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 100g mozzarella sliced into 8 pieces 8 sundried tomatoes sliced 2 Tbsp basil pesto Handful of micro greens or mesclun

Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Brush each aubergine slice liberally with olive oil and season well with salt and pepper. Either grill or fry the slices until soft and just cooked through. When the aubergine is cooking it will look very dry to begin with but as it starts to cook the moisture will come out again, so don't be tempted to add more oil. Set aside to cool on kitchen paper. When cool enough to handle place a layer of mozzarella in the middle of 4 of the slices, followed by a dollop of pesto, sundried tomatoes and then another piece of cheese. Wrap until ends meet and then wrap another slice to form a parcel. Place on a lined baking tray and heat in the oven for 8 – 10 minutes until cheese is melting. Drizzle each plate with balsamic glaze, top with aubergine parcel and finish with a few greens on top. Serves 4

Basil Pesto Ingredients: 1 large bunch basil ¼ cup blanched almonds or pinenuts (or any preferred nut) lightly toasted ¼ cup freshly grated parmesan Pinch of salt 1 small clove garlic 1 – 1 ½ cups olive oil

Method: Place all of the ingredients and 1 cup of olive oil into a blender and pulse until well combined. You may need to add more olive oil if the mixture is too thick. Keep adding oil until you get the desired consistency. Taste and add more seasoning if necessary. Store in the fridge until needed. Makes approximately 1 cup.

From a third generation family of patisserie, while Takuya's peers were busy studying, he was helping in the kitchen, before working for one of Tokyo's top bakeries. My inspiration for this cocktail is the 'Daisy Daisy' song first heard when I was just a kid. The drink itself impersonating sweet Daisy rich and indulgent, the simple glassware 'a bicycle made for two'. Share with your loved one or simply enjoy all to yourself, either way you will become madly in love. Have a sip and fall!

Marinated Barbecued Shrimp Dairy-free, nut-free, Paleo-friendly Preparation time: 5 minutes (plus marinating time) Cook time: 5 minutes Serves 4 Succulent jumbo shrimp, skewered and grilled, are a great source of protein and low in fat. This recipe is simple to prepare and takes almost no time. Serve with a quick side like roasted asparagus with garlic and orange zest for an easy dinner. Timesaving Tip: To save on prep time, ask for peeled, deveined shrimp at the seafood counter. It may be a little more expensive, but it's definitely worth it.

1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 2 tablespoons regular olive oil Juice of 2 lemons Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper Â˝ cup finely chopped parsley, for garnish (optional) 1. Season the shrimp with the cayenne pepper and paprika, and place in a zipper-close bag. Add the oil and lemon juice, shake to combine, and marinate for about 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, prepare a gas or charcoal grill for medium-heat cooking. 3. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper, and grill for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or just until cooked through. Garnish with the parsley (if using).

Creative risk-takers 'We don't want a grand entrance' was one of unusually few design specifics clients Ben and Sarah Quinn had for Red Architecture's Tane Cox when they engaged their long-time friend to design a home for them and their two pre-school daughters. Unusual also was the enjoyment these first-time homebuilders derived from the experience. "The whole process was good fun and really easy", says Ben.

imilarly Tane, who has known the couple for more than 10 years, credits the designer-client relationship as being "near perfect" and says there were few other exacting demands made by, the "creative and switched-on" couple. And so it appears the trio's mutual respect and enjoyment of the process made decisionmaking a cinch. They were all quick to agree the site, a 10,000sqm section in Whatawhata, lent itself to a barn-type structure due to the form's connection with the rural setting. Tane was conscious however that he didn't want to reiterate the often over-simplified design clichés the title 'barn-house' might engender, therefore 'barn form' was only a starting point for this modern interpretation of a rural building.

In his research of, both local European and American styles, he found barn typology demonstrated an honest aesthetic, due to its initial functional purpose and an ethos of using locally available materials, with simplicity of design, adaptability of space and opportunity for modification at its essence. These creative yet pragmatic values suited the client's brief perfectly, they wanted something unique, but it still had to meet their budget. Vertically clad steel was chosen for the exterior, both to imitate the corrugated iron cladding typically used on rural outbuildings and to keep costs down. Other cost-cutting measures included 'found' elements, such as the bricks used on the block forms on the south side, retrieved from a demolished Christchurch warehouse and found at their local demolition yard. Tane says not only were his clients creative and resourceful, but "were willing to take a lot of little risks."

The cedar inversion in the large black barn shape was one of these risks. It creates a crisp and tactile interruption to the building's simple form and means there is a recessed exterior living space protected from the wind. The simple palette chosen is a nod to the utilitarian approach favoured by farmers, but Tane says that while referencing a palette and materials from a rural setting was easy enough, "the greatest challenge was getting the balance between visual simplicity and detail that had had thought put into it." The tongue of wooden decking reaching out from the recessed courtyard creates a perpendicular juxtaposition against the building and, a pleasing visual contrast of materials. But it is the interior where the collaborative nature of the relationship most demonstrates the creative flair of the couple, who began by selecting a simple palette of organic and industrial hues and paired this with 'found' elements and pops of neon. The result is a fun and playful atmosphere – with strong

references to the barn form. Tane says playing with scale in the interior connected the building with barn typology. By manipulating the ceiling height, spaces of different volumes were created – such as the dropped ceiling in the entryway, which creates a 'humble' welcome (the typical barn form eschews grandiosity). While in other spaces, such as the living area, the room is opened to its full height, creating a generous feeling of space that belies the modest size of the room. The flexibility of the interior design means the loft, which was created from the ceiling space at one end of the building, can be easily extended further into the building as the needs of the family change over time. The home's fresh interpretation of form and disciplined use of colour palette and materials was what caught the judges' attention recently, when Red Architecture's 'Modern Barn Form' took home the ADNZ 2014 awards for both Regional and National Residential Home between 150 - 300sqm and the Resene Colour in Design Award. Tane believes a great part of the success of the project is owed to his clients who he describes as 'creative risk-takers'. Autumn is upon us. Leaves are starting to turn to golden hues and will soon begin to fall. Although darkness lingers longer in the morning and steals in a little earlier each evening, autumn should not be considered the end of the gardening year – but the beginning!

he cooler weather allows soil moisture to increase while warmth absorbed from the summer remains for some time, providing ideal growing conditions. Plants which require a robust and deep root system such as trees, hedging, fruit bushes, roses and bulbs will thrive with an autumn planting. Nurseries should now be brimming with new stock grown over the summer for you to choose from. It is also a great time for sowing a new lawn or replenishing a lawn battered by a summer of outdoor cricket and dry conditions. Contemplating new planting provides a perfect opportunity to revisit the design of your overall garden.

Design Talking to a landscape architect regarding your garden layout will help you plan a garden and lifespace perfectly suited to your location. Ÿ Giving careful consideration of the layout and placement of proposed planting will ensure the frustrations of relocating can be avoided. Ÿ Selecting the right type of plant is important to ensure, once established in your garden, it does not become a maintenance burden. Consideration should be given to the plant's full growth size – a larger plant may require regular trimming or provide welcome shade. Ÿ The choice of plant will depend on the location in your garden and the effect you wish to achieve. A sturdier plant will have a better chance of flourishing in areas where sun and shelter are limited. Ÿ Formal and traditional planting versus the native organic style of planting design is also something that must be considered. It is crucial to choose plants that fit well with the style of your house and garden layout. Ÿ Plant composition and texture. As mentioned earlier plant placement is essential - the height, style and texture are also key elements that must be considered during the planting design. Ÿ Seasonal flowers and berries can bring your garden humming to life with birds and colours, giving it that extra wow factor. Compost and fertiliser will help replenish soil where nutrients haven been voraciously drained by a summer of major growth. Any pits dug for shrubs/trees will need to have the bottom and sides broken up to avoid a 'glazing' effect (where the hole has a smooth surface which limits root growth and water absorption).

Timing

Frosts can start appearing from as early as March. If the hot temperatures we experienced over summer continue into autumn, ensure your precious planting doesn't dry out by regular watering or use of an automatic watering system.

Planting

Ensure the soil is well composted and moist. Any plants grown in containers may have roots which are circling in on themselves. These roots will need to be loosened either with fingers or for bigger tree roots, sharp knife/secateurs to enable the roots to spread into the surrounding soil. Plants which require more support, due to slim stems or heavy clusters of fruit or flowers, should be staked. Pruning is mainly a question of timing. Fruiting plants are usually best pruned in the dormant winter months, although flowering plants are best pruned as soon as the flowers fade. Fruiting plants must be pruned regularly to ensure the quality of fruit doesn't decline.

An interesting read? Architect Cymon Allfrey ponders whether you can believe everything you read in the papers… I was recently intrigued by an article in the paper entitled, New Canterbury Homes Failing Building Surveys*. I was attracted by the header and initially thought it was something to do with quality and workmanship. That the fear we would face a quake-building saga, in the same strand as New Zealand's ongoing weather-tight issues, was coming true. Cymon Allfrey

owever before I had reached the end of the first line I realised the article was to do with the statutory process or requirement of issuing Code Compliance Certificates (CCC) rather than any quality audit of building work that the term 'building survey' may refer to. Instantly raising questions in my mind, around the relevance of an article that fails to be in keeping with New Zealand construction terminology. A Code Compliance Certificate is issued by the authority who granted your building consent. Achieved at the end of the building process, it essentially confirms the work in question complies with the relevant building consent documentation. And like a building consent, it falls within the homeowner's

responsibility to apply for it; once of course, all of the consented work is completed. And while a project manager or contractor will often take on the application role, at the end of the day it ultimately falls to the owner. A fact that fails to be mentioned in this article, which places the onerous solely on 'prominent Canterbury home builders', and even went on to name two of the builders in question. My immediate thought, upon reading the article, related to the sensationalised reporting which took data and put it into a relatively illconceived story, that then went on to indicate that CCC is a measure of quality. Which is fundamentally inaccurate. It is an indicator that the building has been completed to consented documentation only. It has nothing to do with

Keeping in mind that the Building Code and subsequent building consent documentation is about ensuring a minimum standard, the CCC might only just be achieving this. Holding a driver's license doesn't mean you are a good driver and it is the same with CCC. It doesn't equate to quality, it just illustrates a minimum. You could have built to the highest of quality and design standards, and still not gain CCC first time. The second issue I had with this article was the manner in which it implied the failure of the buildings to gain Code Compliance Certificate had to do with the builder's competency. The builder is often not responsible for all

elements considered at the time of Compliance. There is a number of additional factors that are reviewed in issuing a CCC such as evidence of ownership, engineering reports, structural reports, payment of relevant fees, certificates relating to gas fitting and electrical work, and so on. There is an expansive amount of paperwork and a lot of detailed crossing of t's and dotting of i's that needs to go on. A process which can often be disjointed with so many factors, and individuals involved. In many cases the reason a CCC is denied is due to a break down in obtaining the appropriate paper work. The Building Act states that the code compliance certificate must be issued within a 20 working day period, during which time, the building consent authority can reasonably request further information about the application, suspending the time period until all

requested information has been received. As there is a provision in the law for more information to be requested, it provides for CCC not to be achieved first go. Stating that the failure rate has risen 45 per cent from pre-quake levels, the article did provide me with some food for thought with this correlation. However perhaps logic prevails, that with an increase in building numbers there would be an increase in all other associated figures… Throughout our lives we come across numerous facts and figures, some of which are relavant and impact the manner in which we operate and achieve, and others, which are irrelevant. The fact that some buildings didn't meet CCC is irrelevant.
