I
've been accused of it, and I confess, at times in my life I've been guilty of it. I'm talking about the new 'n' word – nice, as in too nice. As in Australian cricketer Brad Haddin's interpretation of the word nice when he said the Australian team had been discomfited by New Zealand's 'niceness'. Has this 'n' word transitioned into a different meaning like ‘wicked’ meaning excellent/awesome and ‘sick’ meaning crazy/cool? Is ‘nice’ morphing into the new way to say 'subtly intimidating'? Most Kiwis are nice as in 'good, ok, cool, fun'. We are courteous and gracious and I like that about us. We also have a dash of naughtiness in us and being naughty and nice is quite an alluring mix. Considering people's personalities, they quite often clearly fall into a naughty or nice category. My list of naughty people would be something like: Paul Henry, Jeremy Clarkson, Nigella Lawson, Graeme Rose, Ma'a Nonu and Jack Nicholson… My nice list would be: Pippa Wetzell, Tom Hanks, Marcus Lush, Jamie Oliver, Roger Federer and Matt Damon. The thing is that both of these naughty and nice lists include people I really like, they're people who appeal to me; their unique personalities stand out and they clearly have a mix of both 'n' words at respectively disproportionate levels. Are you naughty or nice? Or a good Kiwi mix of the two? Whatever, I think we should embrace a little of both and remember that thankfully neither are tangled up in any way with that awful 'a' word – arrogant.
Think about it… “Being nice and competitive are two different things.” – David Duffield

FIVE MINUTES by Angela Bennett
five minutes with Caralee Caldwell C
aralee Caldwell is a Kiwi who grew up in a small town in the far north of New Zealand. Like many of us she had a negative relationship with food and her body image. She tried every fad diet imaginable, counted calories, bought meals, shakes, pills and “worse” she says. Caralee lives in the Gold Coast now with her husband and three children. She studied law in her late twenties and loves being a lawyer but through all of this she still felt unhealthy and bloated. She knew something had to change around her diet and eating habits and so she decided to eat only 'real foods'. This has taken her on a journey that thousands of people from around the world have followed via her blog realfoodpledge.com and now she has launched her first cook book of the same name. I stumbled across her website and after perusing recipes such as raw lemon and coconut slice, and scallops topped with bacon and apple crumble, I had to find out more about this naturally talented foodie…
6 April 9, 2015 Metropol
What is 'real' food to you? For me, real food is about keeping it simple and uncomplicated. If it is grown by nature, it is real food, opposed to if it is made in a factory, then it's processed. Think about the foods our Great Grandparents ate, fruit, veggies, meats, seafood and eggs – hardly anything from a packet. Your recipes are gluten, grain, sugar and mostly dairy free; what is your view on food intolerances in modern life? It makes sense that we humans could have trouble digesting some of the modern processed, unnatural and genetically modified foods available today. Our bodies are made to eat natural food. My thoughts are if the food you are eating doesn't make you feel good or it creates a reaction, then it's best not to eat it. This is my experience, so I stay away from the foods that make me feel yucky. How long have you and your family been eating this way? I have been eating this way since 2013. My husband Cameron took a little convincing, but when he saw how much happier and healthier I was he followed my lead in the beginning of 2014.
The Food Show Christchurch is being held in Horncastle Arena, from 1 – 3 May. Early bird tickets are available online until 30 April at www.foodshow.co.nz.
What differences have you and your family noticed after changing your diet to real food? The differences for me are huge, no more tummy problems, much easier weight management, I sleep a lot better and I feel fantastic and energised all the time. My husband dropped 10kg with little effort, it just fell off and he has kept it off quite easily.
FIVE MINUTES
“
THE DIFFERENCES FOR ME ARE HUGE, NO MORE TUMMY PROBLEMS, MUCH EASIER WEIGHT MANAGEMENT, I SLEEP A LOT BETTER AND I FEEL FANTASTIC AND ENERGISED ALL THE TIME.
Which are your top three favourite recipes? My absolute favourite recipe in the book is the lemon and coconut tart! Following that I love the pumpkin pancakes and the pork with onion and apple chutney. You are coming to The Christchurch Food Show this year what can visitors expect in The Healthy Hub area of the show? I am so excited about attending the Christchurch Food Show. I have lots of followers from Christchurch and it will be fantastic to meet everyone in person. I will be talking all things 'real food' as well as whipping up 'no bake' recipes and showing everyone how easy it is to make beautiful raw desserts and treats that are healthy. Is it difficult to change family habits to eating as you do? Not really, because the kids can only eat what you provide. So if we don't buy ice cream and instead we make ice cream out of fruit, they are happy with that. They actually love getting in the kitchen and creating with me. I think their generation are so much more educated about healthy choices than I was. Your recipes are truly inspiring and impressively original; have you always been interested in food? I am a Kiwi so a love and interest in food is a natural state for us, it's our culture. We love food, we love cooking, we love eating and you know what.... we do food really well! I cooked and created recipes from when I was very young as my parents encouraged us to cook.
On a more personal note, what is your proudest achievement? Going to university with three kids in tow and becoming a lawyer at the age of 34 is probably up there. Then of course I love my blog and book, but that is my passion and it comes together a lot more easily. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Finish school and stop eating junk food! What is your favourite drink? My husband's home-made margaritas! They are the best but I save them for a special treat once in a while. What were you doing the last time the
thought went through your mind, “I shouldn't be doing this”? Eating a HUGE piece of Key Lime Pie in Hawaii. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I have never been to Christchurch before. I went to Nelson when I was four and that is the furthest South I have ever been, so I am very excited to see, smell, eat, touch and feel Christchurch for my self. What do you love to do on a Sunday afternoon? I love going for a bike ride on my retro mint coloured cruiser bike, it makes me feel like I am 16 again.

Volunteers countrywide, including hundreds of servicemen and women, are preparing for their vital role as collectors for the Returned and Services Association (RSA) annual Poppy Day appeal on Friday 17 April. RSA National President BJ Clark said that the Gallipoli centenary makes this year's appeal particularly special. “We also celebrate the RSA's centenary in 2016 so there is a tremendous sense of history and the many people the RSA has helped,” said Mr Clark. Funds raised through Poppy Day support the RSA's work on behalf of former and current servicemen and women. Its support advisors across the country help war veterans, ex-servicemen and women, their spouses/partners, widows/widowers and dependants, whether or not they are RSA members. The RSA also provides help for overseas veterans now resident in New Zealand. Mr Clark said: “People think of veterans as being older, but those who were deployed in more recent conflicts like Afghanistan and Timor are also veterans and we are here to support them too.” Give generously to a collector and wear your poppy with pride; donate by texting POPPY to 4662 ($3 donation) or donate online at www.rsa.org.nz/Donation.
In the article 'More to Tai Tapu than meets the eye', in the 26 March issue of Metropol, we mentioned Rossendale Restaurant and ran a picture of the restaurant. Unfortunately Rossendale Restaurant closed 12 months ago and the venue has been undergoing renovations. We apologise for the error and any inconvenience this may have caused. The new owners of the property, Lisa and Richard Middleton from the Bicycle Thief report that they expect to re-open shortly under a different name. The nearby business The Vineyard @ Rossendale, a superb wedding venue, is open as usual. For more information about The Vineyard @ Rossendale see page 57 in this issue.

Celebrating the past and future The new Christchurch Returned Services Association Memorial building is open in time for the 100th anniversary celebrations of Anzac Day. Devastated by the February 2011 earthquake, the original clubrooms were the first RSA facility in New Zealand. The replacement building on the same central city site is not only a memorial to those who gave their lives, but a modern facility that welcomes veterans and the general public. A defining feature of the project is the 11 steelbladed columns that stand on the Northern edge of the central plaza forming an open colonnade to the street. “They are symbolic of the Armistice Day agreement signed at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month and ended the fighting in the First World War,” says project architect Simon Brown. Brown says that architects Warren and Mahoney was conscious to deliver a building that paid due respect to a rich military history and became a destination that engages the street and makes a striking first impression. Quality materials including limestone
cladding and terrazzo flooring bring a sense of solidity, while extensive, full-height glazing allows the transparency appropriate to a public venue. On the ground floor, the fully licensed Trenches Restaurant and Bar is a new addition to the dining scene, with tables spilling out into the sheltered Memorial Plaza. Rotating displays of Canterbury and New Zealand military memorabilia will be on display in the restaurant.

KNICKERS!
...................................................................................................
OUT & ABOUT
– A Brief Comedy
Following the successful season of Ladies for Hire, Riccarton Players has announced their new season of Knickers a comedy by Sarah Quick. Knickers has 'the delicious gossipy attitude of The Women, the outrageous money-making scenario of Calendar Girls, and the hilarious climatic finale of The Full Monty,” writes a Canadian reviewer. Sarah Quick's comedy earned a standing ovation at its world premiere in Port Stanley. The play was originally set in an Ontario town after the local mill shuts down, putting many out of work. When local director, Christina Stachurski, read the script she knew it would translate well into a New Zealand setting. “With the playwright's permission, we've re-set Knickers in Mataura in Southland,” she said. “And we've enjoyed working out the Kiwiana equivalents to the folksy small town aspects of the play.” “It seems that politicians, bureaucrats and management-speak are the same worldwide, so Christchurch people will enjoy Knickers' satire as well,” said Christina. Performing: 14 –18 April in the Hagley Open Theatre. For more information and bookings phone (03) 338 4699 or go to www.riccartonplayers.co.nz.

Treat the diva in your life After launching her new show Legendary Divas in Christchurch last month at The Court Theatre, the response was so positive that Ali Harper is returning to do two more shows on Mother's Day, Sunday, 10 May. “I knew that re-igniting the powerful torch songs made famous by well-known legendary women would be wonderful, but I never imagined the response I would receive. It seems the songs I include in the show create strong nostalgic feelings in people, which is so uplifting.” The Christchurch based entertainer, who was awarded Best Actress late last year in the renowned New York City United Solo Festival, spends time on cruise ships as a Guest
Legendary diva, Ali Harper Entertainer. “It's a rather surreal world, hopping on a ship for a week and entertaining the passengers for one night only. Last week I was on a cruise in South Australia and performed Legendary Divas to a 700 seated theatre with all the bells and whistles. I find the ships a great space to create new shows and this is where Legendary Divas was originally born, in the peacefulness of my cabin with my laptop and music on the high seas.” Legendary Divas plays in The Court Theatre on 10 May at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Art with a social message An artistic billboard with a social message has been installed in an empty section on Barbadoes Street. Called 'The Visit', the temporary artwork has been designed by Parklands resident and communications specialist Megan Blakie. “I wanted something for commuters to reflect on while they're stuck in traffic or walking to work,” says Megan. “I hope the billboard challenges people to think about custodianship of the earth and how we're treating each other and the planet.” Funding for the art installation was donated
through the fundraising website Givealittle. The billboard is located at 377 Barbadoes Street, but will be relocated to another site in the Central city shortly.

OUT & ABOUT “THEY OFTEN GATHER FOR HAPPY HOUR AND TO WATCH THE GAMES IN THE TOP LOUNGE WHICH OVERLOOKS THE STADIUM.”
They say when it comes to property it's all about location, location, location. The same could be said when it comes to finding a retirement village for yourself or your loved ones because let's face it, who wants to spend their retirement getting around the city?
N
estled comfortably at 35 Whiteleigh Avenue, Park Lane Retirement Village couldn't be more convenient. It's within walking distance from both Tower Junction and the wide array of shops and restaurants down the increasingly popular Lincoln Road, has the Orbiter bus stop at the gate, Riccarton Mall is just down the road, and there's a rugby stadium in the backyard. “That's been a bonus, in fact it has even been a draw card for some residents,” manager Jenny Dempsey laughs. “They often gather for happy hour and to watch the games in the top lounge which overlooks the stadium.” But with an onsite library, café, hair salon, crafts room and a comprehensive activities programme which includes bowls, housie, bingo and much more, chances are you won't even need to leave. Part of the newly formed Arvida Group, there are some exciting plans in the works for Park Lane Retirement Village, including the proposed development of a Community Centre on the grounds of the adjacent camping site also owned by Arvida.
A first-class, boutique style facility, offering a variety of care options, Park Lane is all about providing residents with modern facilities and
care based on classic values. While the complex is furnished to the impressive standards of an international hotel, it is the residents' quality of life that is given greater emphasis. “We're not just about having beautiful facilities but also providing quality care and choice for our residents,” Jenny says. “This is a place where residents can retain their independence and have more time for the social and leisure activities they enjoy.” With open days from 11am to 4pm on 11 and 12 April, you can visit Park Lane for yourself to see the range of independent, semiindependent living and full time care options available. “While living in Park Lane residents will enjoy all the benefits provided by a boutique lifestyle facility, with the added comfort of personalised care in the privacy of their own serviced unit or individual care room,” Jenny says. OUT & ABOUT
Home of the adventurous There is no doubt that even in the face of great tragedy, the avid optimists and their comrades in our midst, will always find good looking opportunities – and that is exactly what Christchurch has done and continues to do in the wake of the Canterbury earthquakes.

estament to the creative DNA of the city and its residents, holes in the city's heart are being mended – perhaps only with temporary fixes, but in a way that ensures Christchurch's heart will never stop beating. These fixes continue arriving in the form of emotive art installations, paintings and murals bearing their artistic soul for the entire city to see, and quirky activities and restaurants brimming with character and tasty attitude. It's a form of adaptive urbanism that is equal parts quintessentially Kiwi and foreign flavour, designed to contemporise a city on the cusp of breaking new and extraordinary ground by way of aesthetic transformation. And then there's XCHC (Exchange Christchurch) – a concept conceived by architect Uwe Rieger who implemented similar projects in the early '90s following the socially and culturally life changing fall of the Berlin Wall. Rieger struck while the creative iron was hot as the city of Berlin was catapulted towards its new normal as one of the avant-garde epicentres of Europe – a title it still proudly and compellingly wears today. XCHC is a charitable trust established to support emerging creatives, entrepreneurs and general innovation boundary pushers, to give them a place to mingle, play and do what they do best – make very awesome stuff the rest of us can go gaga over. Located in a character warehouse at 376 Wilsons Road in Waltham Christchurch, XCHC made its debut in August 2014. Crediting the likes of Gap Filler, Ministry of Awesome and Life in Vacant Spaces for breathing new and
exhilarating life into the city, XCHC is working itself to pioneer and innovate by providing an environment in which artists and creators with the same characteristics can tangibly flourish. The aim is to inject new life into a city that is constantly agitating for change on its wild ride towards becoming one of the most desirable destinations on the planet. Offering production, office, shop and showcase spaces, XCHC also provides a shared workshop for artisans and creatives to work their magic, and hosts weekly events with the opportunity for the public to peruse the latest happenings. Testament to the ambitious company XCHC is keeping are some of the recent events held at the space – at Christmas time, in the spirit of staying off Santa's naughty list – XCHC

Sense of Place furthers the theme of identity set out in the first of the CSO's Masterworks series, opening with Benjamin Britten's Four Sea Interludes which portrays the everchanging moods of the ocean, a constant companion of all New Zealanders, and then continuing on with Bohuslav Martinu Concerto for Two Pianos H.292, with Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg. Martinu composed the concerto in 1943, shortly after he moved to the United States from Czechoslovakia. The music touches on a range of musical influences, including jazz, tango and bohemian folk, reflecting the colourful diverse identities of the immigrants who uprooted their lives and set sail for the New World in the 1930s and 40s. “We are very happy to come back to play in Christchurch for a second
time,” said Gil Garburg. “We look forward to playing the very demanding Martinu concerto with this wonderful ensemble of excellent musicians.” The concert is on April 18, 7.30 pm, at the Charles Luney Auditorium. Tickets are available from Eventfinda.

he store has been providing excellent service in canvas and equestrian products for 101 years, and is well known for their range of outdoor clothing and footwear that looks great on and off the horse. “A number of our customers come in for Western style boots for their weddings,” says owner Linda Dawber. Their boots are genuine Ariat Western boots from the United States, made for both fashion and riding, with a selection to view online at www.clarkemckenzie.co.nz, and to try on in store. As well as a range of equestrian and fashion footwear, they have a great selection of outdoor clothing products with new winter lines arriving daily. For men and women this is anything from smart and stylish winter jackets, Outback oil skins, vests, moleskin pants, to long and short sleeve Polo shirts and hats in a range of styles. Linda herself has a long history in textile design and construction, with the large workroom out the back of the store continually busy creating products for outdoor use. “We can make and repair anything and everything out of canvas, PVC and leather,” says Linda, with the list of products designed to protect your outdoor equipment impressive in its scale. Shade sails, exterior sunshades; covers for outdoor furniture, umbrellas, barbeques, boats and cars; squabs, pannier bags for motorbikes and horse trekking, and even covers for heavy machinery such as diggers, are just some of the products available, all of which can be customised to their clients' needs. The experienced riding team are happy to offer any equestrian advice, with an at home saddle fitting service provided through in-house saddle fitter Graeme.
To enquire about saddle fitting across the South Island or to simply talk to one of the friendly team, call Clarke McKenzie on (03) 323 6536 or drop in to 802 Main North Road, Belfast.

OrthodontiX removed this beautiful bride's straightening braces for the couple's wedding photos.
Beautiful ‘shiny whites!’ By Cheryl Colley.
Something about her wedding day invariably ensures that a bride looks her most beautiful and radiant. It is after all a very special day and she wants to be as dropdead gorgeous as possible for her groom and for family and friends.
B
ut not everything has to be left to nature or to chance. A little help is permissible. That's where Great4Teeth, the latest addition to OrthodontiX the specialist orthodontic practice, comes in. Right now Great4Teeth is delighted to be able to offer brides and grooms cosmetic teeth whitening for $350 per couple, or $199 for one person, a considerable saving on their usual price.
The whitening treatment uses the Polus teeth whitening system, the world's most advanced and innovative technology and materials to whiten teeth safely, quickly and with maximum results. The “Osmo Whitening Gel” eliminates stains and reveals a beautiful shiny white smile in three 12-minute cycles. This product guarantees that the results will be achieved with virtually no sensitivity. Typically results from this treatment can last one to two years depending on a client's food and drink intake. Should a bride be having teeth straightening treatment with braces, then as a standard practice OrthodontiX will remove the braces for free for the wedding day and the photos, and replace them afterwards. To maintain that stunning new smile Great4Teeth has a shop full of oral care products in the front of the beautifully refurbished 1910 bay villa at 36 Colombo Street where OrthodontiX is located. The range of products is impressive and they are also different from the norm. Take the toothpaste

teampunk is celebrated in all its diverse glory at Clockwork Emporium and Café, with the creative aesthetic that it offers exactly what proprietors Mike and Paula wanted to share when the Emporium opened just over a year ago. “It all started with a birthday party,” says Mike of their own Steampunk journey. An avid reader of sci- and steampunk novels, his Steampunkthemed birthday party was all it took for both he and Paula to become fascinated with the genre. They both wear it well – corsets and rufed shirts, and long shorts with braces, completed with hats and goggles, and pieces from Paula's jewellery range, Muse Jewellery Design. It was while looking for retailers suitable for her line of jewellery that the couple rst discussed a Steampunkinspired store. Originally from Mexico, Paula has been making jewellery for over nine years, with this slowly evolving into Muse's Steampunk and vintage look. “A lot of it is repurposed,” says Paula. “Most are made from recycled vintage watch mechanisms.” Paula imports USSR made '60s and '70s era watches from the Ukraine, adding coloured stones and handpainted glass to create stunningly detailed and unique pieces of jewellery. With Muse Jewellery Design as its basis, the idea of the Emporium grew to

“And it's not just for Steampunks,” says Mike. “It's something you can dress up your everyday street clothes with, like Steampunk cufflinks with business shirts to create a unique look.” Steampunk-themed weddings are a big thing at the moment say Mike and Paula, with many guests visiting the Emporium looking for help with their look, or for gifts. “It's all about upcycling and most people have elements of clothing they can start with,” says Mike, “adding small pieces such as cufflinks, hats or goggles, waistcoats for the men, corsets for the ladies, or even crafting full outfits.”From his seat on a bench outside the Emporium's door Mike takes in the view along New Regent Street. He chats with those who pass by, the regulars and newcomers fresh off the tram, the curious and the fans. Creative repurposing is core to the genre and part of what attracts Mike to Steampunk. His costume 'Agent 24' stands in the window, complete with large ray gun. It won a placing in the Steampunk Fashion Show at the annual Steampunk NZ Festival in Oamaru two years ago. Paula and Mike will be making the trip south for the festival again this year, along with many other members from the Steampunk Christchurch community. The festival runs over Queen's Birthday weekend (28 May – 1 June) with readings, performances, markets, dinners, dancing and more, and newcomers are always made especially welcome. “There is something about Steampunk – you go to an event and everyone talks,” says Paula. “Something about dressing up, and being creative, really opens people up.” Clockwork Emporium and Café is open daily on New Regent Street for coffee and Steampunk awesomeness from 10am – 5pm, and late nights for most theatre evenings. You can also see their fashion on display at the Canterbury Fashion and Beauty Week at The Tannery on Friday 17 April, or check out www.clockworkcafe.co.nz.

Wool you'll love to wear We've certainly been noticing the change in the atmosphere over the past few weeks as we move inevitably towards winter. What better time than now to take up the knitting needles once again and create some wonderful garments for the cooler days? There is also no better place to find everything you need to indulge your creative knitting urges than The Main Skein in the Bush Inn Centre.
W
“We
e have the most beautiful alpaca yarns in stock,” says Pam, owner of The Main Skein. “The yarn imported from Peru is 100% alpaca. It's a total pleasure to knit with and to wear as it is so soft and luxurious. It is actually five times warmer than wool.” You can add to that the fact that it is hypo-allergenic and does not irritate the skin so this yarn is a real winner. The Main Skein has a whole range of alpaca yarn from 4-ply to double knit and boucle. There is also a New Zealand yarn that is 80% alpaca and 20% merino, as well as the store's superb range of the top New Zealand wool brands - Naturally, Rare Earth, Touch and Ashfords. Along with the yarn, grab yourself a pair of amazing 'Knit Pro' needles to assist you with a quality finish and you are well on the way to producing a fabulous hand-knitted product. “These needles are made of laminated and highly polished birchwood. They are a joy to look at as well as to use because the knitting simply glides along them.” The KnitPro range includes straight needles in two lengths and

The Main Skein has the answer - the Floressents range of velvet bags in Tree of Life and Bird of Paradise patterns – simply stunning. THE MOD SQUAD Attention girls and boys, autumn has arrived and winter is nipping at its heels. With chilly weather approaching it's time to check out the new fashion collections in stores. One of our favourites here at Metropol is Witchery's Boy & Girl AW15 collection. It's been put through its paces by their savvy designers to ensure that it's lively, fashionable and fun-loving.
JOIN THE WITCHERY STYLE SQUAD

itchery Girl & Boy is calling all parents of next-generation style icons to join their Style Squad for petit vogues in the making. FOR THE GIRLS For girls, a pretty kind of playfulness joins forces with an urban edge. Think modern femininity meets Parisienne pluck. Amid timeless must-haves and transitional staples, animal print and embellished pieces step up, taking their place as future classics alongside active stripes and easy layers. Easily mixed and matched, key items include utilitarian favourites like the jersey military dress, biker jeans, roomy parkas and vests, all in a colour palette featuring army green, indigo and touches of pink. Clever details including epaulettes and cargo pockets help to define the look, while interesting textures are made to be mixed.
FOR THE BOYS Boys have their marching orders too. The first goal is to put the building blocks of a functional wardrobe in place with great shirts, fine stripe tees and sand-worn chinos. Then the real action begins with a reinforcement of geometric camo print that works best with grey fleece and denim, or military blues. The trends are all present and accounted for, but this is not about one-hit wonders. Ideal for layering, cable shawl cardigans and biker jackets will easily make the transition into winter and beyond, thanks to hardwearing fabrics and heavy-duty finishes. Put simply, these are pieces to be played in. With adventure in mind, the season ahead will see kids kitted out with the equipment they need to seize the day.

Capturing a moment Jessica Gunn has always been drawn to humanity in the world of art. While a tree is still a tree from any angle, she finds inspiration in the ever changing human form as it breathes, moves, thinks and stands.

L
ive drawing first caught her attention as a young secondary school art student, and stayed with Jessica when she travelled overseas and had the rare opportunity to attend fashion shows in Paris. With a fashion background she drew what she saw – the fabulous garments and the shapes and silhouettes of the women who wore them. With only a pencil and brush Jessica is now creating pieces of art which capture not only a figure and fabric, but also a very special moment in time. “It's such a privileged moment,” says Jessica, who meets with brides-to-be while they are fitted for their wedding gown, observing and drawing the way each moves and the way the dress fits around her. “When I draw, my intention is to record a significant and unique moment - I witness a precious and very personal time that will not be repeated,” says Jessica. “I am not drawing a portrait, rather I am observing the particular character and the exceptional way that person presents themselves to the world, consciously or unconsciously.” With a Bachelor of Fine Arts behind her, Jessica's work includes ink and wash images, using wash to show lightness of fabric, and the darker ink to give detail and texture. She has also recently begun creating bridal images with water colours and gouache, using soft shades such as crème brulee, alabaster, and driftwood. 42 April 9, 2015 Metropol

hoosing the perfect wedding dress takes years of practice, but for brides-to-be that's just not an option. Thankfully, the team at Wilkins Bridal has been doing it for over 30 years. Here are store manager April Meredith's top tips for choosing the perfect dress: Ÿ Focus on the right silhouette for your body shape first, details come later. Ÿ Don't forget about the back of your dress – it's often what your guests are looking at during the formalities. Ÿ Don't pick a wedding dress because it's trendy now – photos are forever. Ÿ Don't feel pressured to bring an audience to your fitting – they can confuse you. Choosing By Cheryl Colley
Modern wedding ceremonies in New Zealand can be as formal or informal as couples want. They can be religious or non-religious, full of pomp and ceremony or simple and casual. They can include traditional customs and rituals or have a contemporary twist. The options are limited only by a couple's wishes and creativity.
CHOOSING THE CELEBRANT IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION BECAUSE A CELEBRANT CAN MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE TO THE OUTCOME OF A CEREMONY.
48 April 9, 2015 Metropol
T
here is one element that all couples must have when they are getting married – an authorised and registered person to perform the service. Independent marriage celebrants in New Zealand are people from the community appointed by the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Only people appointed for this role and whose names appear in the list of marriage celebrants in the New Zealand Gazette or at www.bdm.govt.nz, have the authority to solemnise civil marriages in this country.
Choosing the celebrant is an important decision because a celebrant can make a significant difference to the outcome of a ceremony. Couples should look back on their ceremony for eternity with warm memories because they have worked with their celebrant to craft a ceremony that reflects their values and beliefs, and that is unique and personal to them. To achieve this there needs to have developed a relationship of trust and openness between the couple and the celebrant. A top celebrant expects to be
ESSENTIAL WEDDING
guide
a celebrant “checked out” by couples to see if the rapport is there to achieve the special outcome they have in mind. Only then should the development of the ceremony begin. Getting to know a couple closely so as to capture their essence is at the heart of a top celebrant's approach. The celebrant then acts as the weaver of all the strands of information and of the couple's wishes and desires that come out of their discussions. The resulting ceremony should be as individual as is each couple. It should be appropriate to their backgrounds and circumstances. It should be authentic, personal and genuine, while including the obligatory legal aspects. This type of ceremony not only completely engages the couple, but just as importantly it engages the guests because it accurately depicts the couple and their love for each other. The difference between a middle-of-theroad celebrant and a great celebrant is striking. Do your homework to find the one who is right for you.
THE CEREMONY SHOULD BE AS INDIVIDUAL AS IS EACH COUPLE. IT SHOULD BE AUTHENTIC, PERSONAL AND GENUINE.
Cheryl Colley is a registered marriage and civil union celebrant qualified with a Certificate in Celebrant Studies from New Zealand's Celebrant School.

Wedding plans Congratulations, you're engaged and looking forward to your dream wedding. To make it everything you desire you need to be focussed and organised. Here are some tips to ensure your planning goes smoothly…
Unique, magical, romantic
R
omance knows no bounds at Chateau on the Park overlooking the stunning grounds of Hagley Park in Christchurch. For the bride and groom looking for a venue that will create magic and unforgettable memories on their special day, the whimsical venue's dedicated and professional event coordinators have mastered the art of creating nuptial perfection in the unique setting of beautiful gardens and castle-like architecture. Set amidst five acres of award winning gardens, the Chateau on the Park offers a unique and tranquil environment for a romantic wedding celebration, be it traditional, contemporary or totally original. With a choice of either the Camelot room or the Great Hall, the menu can also be designed to suit the budget. Ample parking on site ensures a stress free experience for guests.
F
irst off, don't rush. Enjoy being engaged, it's a wonderful time to celebrate with family and friends and contemplate a wonderful future together. The first step of your wedding planning will be to set the date. Once this is done you will need to decide on the tone of your event. Will it be a formal wedding, a casual affair or a theme wedding? This is also the time to decide whether your wedding will be religious or secular, and what the wedding will “feel” like. Setting a budget is always a big consideration. Talk to each of your parents and ask them if they'd like to contribute to your wedding, and either how much they'd like to give you, or what specific things they would like to pay for. Your attendants at the wedding will be helpful on the day and leading up to the day, so choose them carefully, ask them in person if at all possible, and discuss the responsibilities involved. Venues get booked out well in advance so begin looking for a venue you love early in the piece and you are more likely to get the date, time and cost that you've planned for. Consider hiring a wedding planner or consultant. If you are a busy person, or just want some guidance, professionals can be invaluable in putting together your ideal day and they can often save you money. You'll find free checklists and planners on the internet and these are helpful for staying on track with your list of to do's. You'll no doubt find yourself gathering information from many sources such as magazines, brochures, swatches and printouts so obtain a ring binder or wedding book so you know where everything is. Once you've got these basics underway you can begin with the fun stuff – dresses, suits, flowers, rings, food, photos, cake, music and the many other details that you'll find on your checklist.
Celebrate your special day by holding your wedding in our romantic setting. Beautiful summer garden wedding ceremonies. Cosy mid winter fire side receptions. Award winning cuisine for up to 220 guests. Poolside pre dinner drinks and cocktail food.
Dedicated professional wedding co-ordinators. Attentive, friendly service staff on the day of your wedding. Plentiful free on site parking, complimentary honeymoon suite & your First Anniversary dinner in our Brasserie. No hidden costs & excellent value.

Is an engagement ring necessary? No. However the wedding ring is usually an integral part of the wedding ceremony. Does the formal invitation to a church wedding require an answer? No. but it is a matter of courtesy to reply. How many ushers are needed? Usually estimate one usher for each 50 guests. Who handles the celebrant's fee? The groom pays the fee, but the best man presents it to the celebrant, in a plain white envelope, either before or after the ceremony. Which side of the church is to be reserved for the bride's family and friends? The left is for the bride, the right for the groom. Can a house wedding be just as formal as a church wedding? Yes, but there are usually not as many attendants. May guests be invited to the reception and not the wedding? Yes, if the ceremony is to be attended by only relatives and close friends. Who reads emails or messages of congratulations at the reception? The best man. Are gifts brought to the reception? Traditionally no, but a table is often provided at the venue and gifts displayed there. Are financial contributions displayed with other wedding gifts? No, but they can be noted on a card. How are wedding gifts displayed if a home reception is not planned? A tea or cocktail party may be held for close friends several days prior to the wedding. What does the bride give the bridesmaids? A small lasting gift such as a piece of jewellery. Many times the groom is the one chosen to give the bridesmaids a small gift. What does the groom present to his ushers? Gloves, ties, boutonnieres. Who provides corsages for the bride and mothers? The groom. What does the groom present to his bride as a gift? Usually a personal gift such as jewellery. Should the groom dance at the reception with other partners? Yes, with his mother, mother-in-law and the matron of honour.

anterbury Jewellers have been crafting exquisite pieces of jewellery for 35 years, designing and manufacturing handmade jewellery from their premises at 75 Peterborough Street. “Some will be lucky and 'find' the perfect engagement ring already made,” says Jason Baylis from Canterbury Jewellers. “Others may need to mix and match from various designs, or start from scratch and have the ring designed and handmade.” For those who are unsure exactly what style of ring their girlfriend would like Canterbury Jewellers has a few helpful tips. “Take note of the jewellery she wears,” suggests Jason. “Is it traditional with lots of fine detail or modern and bold? We will be able to get you on the right track from there.” Call Canterbury Jewellers on (03) 366 7737 for more information, or drop into the store to get an idea of the design that is right for you.

You'll find aubergines are still available in stores and this 'parcel' recipe by the Akaroa Cooking School is a great way to prepare them. They make a tasty entrée and can be made well in advance and kept in the fridge until ready to serve. Just pop them in the oven until the cheese starts to melt and serve immediately.
Roasted Aubergine Parcels with Mozzarella, Sundried Tomatoes & Pesto Ingredients: 2 large aubergines sliced length ways in 1cm strips (you will need 8 slices in total) Olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 100g mozzarella sliced into 8 pieces 8 sundried tomatoes sliced 2 Tbsp basil pesto Handful of micro greens or mesclun
Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Brush each aubergine slice liberally with olive oil and season well with salt and pepper. Either grill or fry the slices until soft and just cooked through. When the aubergine is cooking it will look very dry to begin with but as it starts to cook the moisture will come out again, so don't be tempted to add more oil. Set aside to cool on kitchen paper. When cool enough to handle place a layer of mozzarella in the middle of 4 of the slices, followed by a dollop of pesto, sundried tomatoes and then another piece of cheese. Wrap until ends meet and then wrap another slice to form a parcel. Place on a lined baking tray and heat in the oven for 8 – 10 minutes until cheese is melting. Drizzle each plate with balsamic glaze, top with aubergine parcel and finish with a few greens on top. Serves 4
Basil Pesto Ingredients: 1 large bunch basil ¼ cup blanched almonds or pinenuts (or any preferred nut) lightly toasted ¼ cup freshly grated parmesan Pinch of salt 1 small clove garlic 1 – 1 ½ cups olive oil
Method: Place all of the ingredients and 1 cup of olive oil into a blender and pulse until well combined. You may need to add more olive oil if the mixture is too thick. Keep adding oil until you get the desired consistency. Taste and add more seasoning if necessary. Store in the fridge until needed. Makes approximately 1 cup.

Making lunchtime exciting They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and, while that may be true, lunch is the most exciting meal of the day at Japanz Bakery, South City Centre.

eaturing a delicious range of traditional Kiwi 'tucker' and Japanese inspired products, there is something for everyone at Japanz. “The best pies in town,” as described by one happy customer on the Facebook page – steak, steak and cheese, mince, mince and cheese, chicken, satay chicken, bacon and egg – feature the perfect golden crust and the bakery now supplies them frozen so you can enjoy Japanz pies at home. Sandwiches – egg, tuna lettuce, ham lettuce tomato, teriyaki chicken, and chicken cutlet – bacon and cheese croissants, burgers (vegetarian potato croquet burger), cream puffs, tarts, cakes, scrolls, donuts and cheese
cakes are popular lunch time options. “People are surprised everything is made in the back factory,” co-owner Makiko explains. “We have a wide range of traditional Japanese products, such as custard cream bun/ choco cornet, melon buns (named 'cookie bun' for our shop), curry puffs and products with ingredients Kiwis aren't familiar with, like red bean buns using boiled sweetened bean paste. “Japanese food is now influenced heavily by western food, so Kiwis are already familiar with many of our products. New Zealanders enjoy pies, scrolls and donuts the most.” Japanz Bakery is owned by Takuya and Makiko. From a third generation family of patisserie, while Takuya's peers were busy studying, he was helping in the kitchen, before working for one of Tokyo's top bakeries. Takuya is supported by a talented assistant baker and well-trained customer service staff and baristas. The couple's Gloucester Street bakery was demolished after the earthquakes, so they moved to South City last year and, while they celebrate Japanz's one year anniversary on March 24, the shop itself is 15 years old next year. “Our policy is to make honest products… no shortcuts, no fake ingredients and, of
“PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED EVERYTHING IS MADE IN THE BACK FACTORY.” course, safe. We love knowing you can give our products to anyone – kids, family and friends,” Makiko says. “We love seeing our customers' happy faces. That's what motivates us.” To see the range for yourself visit South City Centre, find them on Facebook or phone (03) 943 4066.

Passionate 'bagelers' share the love If you do what you love, then you'll never work a day in your life.
T
hat said, given how much the team at Wholly Bagels and Pizza love bagels, every day must be a holiday. And they have been spreading the love across the country with the same enthusiasm as the day it all began over 15 years ago. Since the oven timer went off on its very first bagel in 1998, Wholly Bagels and Pizza has developed a staggering range of bagel and filling combinations for every taste and occasion – breakfast bagels, classic bagels, gourmet bagels, mini bagels, veggie bagels and naked bagels. There are 13 different flavours – from sesame seed and wholegrain to jalapeno cheddar and chocolate chip. And when it comes to fillings, the choices are even more extensive – chicken schnitzel, pastrami, salmon, falafel, and a whole load more. Baked fresh daily with local ingredients means there is no need for nasty preservatives and they contain very little sugar or fat – so you can feed your hunger without worrying about your waistline. At Wholly Bagels and Pizza, they are resolute in their belief that there is nothing better than a bagel, but they will concede there is a close second – a New York style pizza. Thin, crispy base, fresh toppings to make you salivate and 100 percent New Zealand ingredients whenever possible – that's the promise of a Wholly Bagels’ pizza. Size is everything to New Yorkers, so the sizes available are large (14 inch) and jumbo (20 inch or half a metre).

My inspiration for this cocktail is the 'Daisy Daisy' song first heard when I was just a kid. The drink itself impersonating sweet Daisy rich and indulgent, the simple glassware 'a bicycle made for two'. Share with your loved one or simply enjoy all to yourself, either way you will become madly in love. Have a sip and fall!

Marinated Barbecued Shrimp Dairy-free, nut-free, Paleo-friendly Preparation time: 5 minutes (plus marinating time) Cook time: 5 minutes Serves 4 Succulent jumbo shrimp, skewered and grilled, are a great source of protein and low in fat. This recipe is simple to prepare and takes almost no time. Serve with a quick side like roasted asparagus with garlic and orange zest for an easy dinner. Timesaving Tip: To save on prep time, ask for peeled, deveined shrimp at the seafood counter. It may be a little more expensive, but it's definitely worth it.
1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 2 tablespoons regular olive oil Juice of 2 lemons Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper ½ cup finely chopped parsley, for garnish (optional) 1. Season the shrimp with the cayenne pepper and paprika, and place in a zipper-close bag. Add the oil and lemon juice, shake to combine, and marinate for about 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, prepare a gas or charcoal grill for medium-heat cooking. 3. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper, and grill for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or just until cooked through. Garnish with the parsley (if using).
Crazy Daisy 60ml Bourbon 30ml Lemon Juice 5ml Grenadine 5ml Gomme Orange slice Maraschino cherry Methodology 1. Prepare the glassware by chilling with ice 2. Energy efficient show home reopens Award-winning Rilean Construction has re-opened its first ever energy efficient 'Evolution Series' show home near Queenstown as substantial demand for sustainable living continues to grow.
STEPPING INTO THIS WARM, SUNNY HOME REALLY ENCAPSULATES WHAT AN EVOLUTION HOME IS ALL ABOUT.
T
he show home re-opened at the popular Jack's Point lifestyle development recently and displays many features of sustainable living and environmentally responsible building methods. Designed by Rilean-appointed architect Mark Gray, the four-bed two-bath home at 9 McKellar Drive spans 225sq m and is located in a sunny north-west facing position within the spectacular development, overlooked by The Remarkables mountain range. The 'Evolution Series' team is “thrilled” to reopen the home to the public, which first opened its doors in June 2014, enabling them to once again showcase what an energy efficient home should look and feel like. “We're lucky the owners have allowed us to use it as a show home again for six months while they live overseas,” said Rilean Construction director and shareholder Mick Moffatt.
The open plan living area opens on to a spacious balcony overlooking the mountains “It's perfect timing really as we're in autumn and starting to feel the first 'pinches' of winter with the occasional morning frost. Even in our harsh Central Otago climate,
stepping into this warm, sunny home really encapsulates what an evolution home is all about. The heat retention level is amazing.

Niche builders in the groove “We're Cantabrian to the core and Holloway Builders intends to make a contribution to this province for many years to come,” says James Holloway, managing director of Holloway Builders. “I spent many years living and running my own building company in the UK after completing my apprenticeship here in Christchurch, but seized the opportunity to come back to Canterbury when it arose. While the UK experience was great and helped me learn a lot about this industry, Canterbury is home.”

Each and every home is designed to make the most of the outdoor environment, sunlight and other key natural benefits. He and his team treat every project as if it is their own home they are building. Delivering the highest quality product with the highest level of customer service is the ultimate goal. These repairs range in value from $100,000 to in excess of $1 million and are very complex in nature. Holloway Builders' new build focus is in architecturally-designed and built homes. Creative risk-takers 'We don't want a grand entrance' was one of unusually few design specifics clients Ben and Sarah Quinn had for Red Architecture's Tane Cox when they engaged their long-time friend to design a home for them and their two pre-school daughters. Unusual also was the enjoyment these first-time homebuilders derived from the experience. "The whole process was good fun and really easy", says Ben.
S
imilarly Tane, who has known the couple for more than 10 years, credits the designer-client relationship as being "near perfect" and says there were few other exacting demands made by, the "creative and switched-on" couple. And so it appears the trio's mutual respect and enjoyment of the process made decisionmaking a cinch. They were all quick to agree the site, a 10,000sqm section in Whatawhata, lent itself to a barn-type structure due to the form's connection with the rural setting. Tane was conscious however that he didn't want to reiterate the often over-simplified design clichés the title 'barn-house' might engender, therefore 'barn form' was only a starting point for this modern interpretation of a rural building.

"THE GREATEST CHALLENGE WAS GETTING THE BALANCE BETWEEN VISUAL SIMPLICITY AND DETAIL THAT HAD HAD THOUGHT PUT INTO IT.”
In his research of, both local European and American styles, he found barn typology demonstrated an honest aesthetic, due to its initial functional purpose and an ethos of using locally available materials, with simplicity of design, adaptability of space and opportunity for modification at its essence. These creative yet pragmatic values suited the client's brief perfectly, they wanted something unique, but it still had to meet their budget. Vertically clad steel was chosen for the exterior, both to imitate the corrugated iron cladding typically used on rural outbuildings and to keep costs down. Other cost-cutting measures included 'found' elements, such as the bricks used on the block forms on the south side, retrieved from a demolished Christchurch warehouse and found at their local demolition yard. Tane says not only were his clients creative and resourceful, but "were willing to take a lot of little risks."
The cedar inversion in the large black barn shape was one of these risks. It creates a crisp and tactile interruption to the building's simple form and means there is a recessed exterior living space protected from the wind. The simple palette chosen is a nod to the utilitarian approach favoured by farmers, but Tane says that while referencing a palette and materials from a rural setting was easy enough, "the greatest challenge was getting the balance between visual simplicity and detail that had had thought put into it." The tongue of wooden decking reaching out from the recessed courtyard creates a perpendicular juxtaposition against the building and, a pleasing visual contrast of materials. But it is the interior where the collaborative nature of the relationship most demonstrates the creative flair of the couple, who began by selecting a simple palette of organic and industrial hues and paired this with 'found' elements and pops of neon. The result is a fun and playful atmosphere – with strong
references to the barn form. Tane says playing with scale in the interior connected the building with barn typology. By manipulating the ceiling height, spaces of different volumes were created – such as the dropped ceiling in the entryway, which creates a 'humble' welcome (the typical barn form eschews grandiosity). While in other spaces, such as the living area, the room is opened to its full height, creating a generous feeling of space that belies the modest size of the room. The flexibility of the interior design means the loft, which was created from the ceiling space at one end of the building, can be easily extended further into the building as the needs of the family change over time. The home's fresh interpretation of form and disciplined use of colour palette and materials was what caught the judges' attention recently, when Red Architecture's 'Modern Barn Form' took home the ADNZ 2014 awards for both Regional and National Residential Home between 150 - 300sqm and the Resene Colour in Design Award. Tane believes a great part of the success of the project is owed to his clients who he describes as 'creative risk-takers'. Their openmindedness was key in creating the freedom to challenge the design process. "They trusted me which was a massive thing.” Article credit: Defign magazine. AUTUMN: the start of the gardening year External affairs with Tim Goom COMPOST AND FERTILISER WILL HELP REPLENISH SOIL WHERE NUTRIENTS HAVEN BEEN VORACIOUSLY DRAINED BY A SUMMER OF MAJOR GROWTH
Autumn is upon us. Leaves are starting to turn to golden hues and will soon begin to fall. Although darkness lingers longer in the morning and steals in a little earlier each evening, autumn should not be considered the end of the gardening year – but the beginning!
T
he cooler weather allows soil moisture to increase while warmth absorbed from the summer remains for some time, providing ideal growing conditions. Plants which require a robust and deep root system such as trees, hedging, fruit bushes, roses and bulbs will thrive with an autumn planting. Nurseries should now be brimming with new stock grown over the summer for you to choose from. It is also a great time for sowing a new lawn or replenishing a lawn battered by a summer of outdoor cricket and dry conditions. Contemplating new planting provides a perfect opportunity to revisit the design of your overall garden.
Design Talking to a landscape architect regarding your garden layout will help you plan a garden and lifespace perfectly suited to your location. Ÿ Giving careful consideration of the layout and placement of proposed planting will ensure the frustrations of relocating can be avoided. Ÿ Selecting the right type of plant is important to ensure, once established in your garden, it does not become a maintenance burden. Consideration should be given to the plant's full growth size – a larger plant may require regular trimming or provide welcome shade. Ÿ The choice of plant will depend on the location in your garden and the effect you wish to achieve. A sturdier plant will have a better chance of flourishing in areas where sun and shelter are limited. Ÿ Formal and traditional planting versus the native organic style of planting design is also something that must be considered. It is crucial to choose plants that fit well with the style of your house and garden layout. Ÿ Plant composition and texture. As mentioned earlier plant placement is essential - the height, style and texture are also key elements that must be considered during the planting design. Ÿ Seasonal flowers and berries can bring your garden humming to life with birds and colours, giving it that extra wow factor. Selecting plant species that give your garden seasonal interest all year round is a must!
Preparation
Ÿ Ÿ
Compost and fertiliser will help replenish soil where nutrients haven been voraciously drained by a summer of major growth. Any pits dug for shrubs/trees will need to have the bottom and sides broken up to avoid a 'glazing' effect (where the hole has a smooth surface which limits root growth and water absorption).
Timing
Ÿ
Frosts can start appearing from as early as March. If the hot temperatures we experienced over summer continue into autumn, ensure your precious planting doesn't dry out by regular watering or use of an automatic watering system.
Planting
Ÿ Ÿ
Ÿ Ÿ
Ensure the soil is well composted and moist. Any plants grown in containers may have roots which are circling in on themselves. These roots will need to be loosened either with fingers or for bigger tree roots, sharp knife/secateurs to enable the roots to spread into the surrounding soil. Plants which require more support, due to slim stems or heavy clusters of fruit or flowers, should be staked. Pruning is mainly a question of timing. Fruiting plants are usually best pruned in the dormant winter months, although flowering plants are best pruned as soon as the flowers fade. Fruiting plants must be pruned regularly to ensure the quality of fruit doesn't decline.
Autumn is the perfect planting time for a variety of plants. Talking to a landscape architect regarding your garden layout will help you plan a garden and lifespace™ perfectly suited to your location.

Take your garden from Just like the fashion and design world, trends help guide what is happening in the gardening world, from influencing the types and colours of plants found at the garden centre and used by landscapers, to the overall style and colour among your plantings. However, the one thing that is never influenced by garden trends is the desire for reliable, healthy, robust plants grown specifically for the environment in which the home gardener will nurture them.
G
ardeners serious about quality plants most likely already know about McSaveneys Nursery, tucked away off Marshlands Road. For more than 20 years, Justin Trist has been cultivating and growing quality shrubs, trees, fruit trees, hedging plants, native plants and a range of flowering perennials for the discerning gardener. And, when we say discerning - we mean the gardener looking for quality, good-sized plants at a price that will be surprisingly different from the major garden centres. While Justin's passion is the driving force behind the success of this ever-growing business, it's his dedication to growing exactly what thrives in Canterbury, hardening them off outside of the tunnel house before selling them and only selling quality grade plants that sees the business flourish. These three elements mean what you take away from McSaveneys will have the very best chance of becoming a superstar in your garden. Working alongside Justin and partner Michelle is Carolyn Dixon, a highly regarded garden expert. An interesting read? Architect Cymon Allfrey ponders whether you can believe everything you read in the papers… I was recently intrigued by an article in the paper entitled, New Canterbury Homes Failing Building Surveys*. I was attracted by the header and initially thought it was something to do with quality and workmanship. That the fear we would face a quake-building saga, in the same strand as New Zealand's ongoing weather-tight issues, was coming true. Cymon Allfrey
H
owever before I had reached the end of the first line I realised the article was to do with the statutory process or requirement of issuing Code Compliance Certificates (CCC) rather than any quality audit of building work that the term 'building survey' may refer to. Instantly raising questions in my mind, around the relevance of an article that fails to be in keeping with New Zealand construction terminology. A Code Compliance Certificate is issued by the authority who granted your building consent. Achieved at the end of the building process, it essentially confirms the work in question complies with the relevant building consent documentation. And like a building consent, it falls within the homeowner's
responsibility to apply for it; once of course, all of the consented work is completed. And while a project manager or contractor will often take on the application role, at the end of the day it ultimately falls to the owner. A fact that fails to be mentioned in this article, which places the onerous solely on 'prominent Canterbury home builders', and even went on to name two of the builders in question. My immediate thought, upon reading the article, related to the sensationalised reporting which took data and put it into a relatively illconceived story, that then went on to indicate that CCC is a measure of quality. Which is fundamentally inaccurate. It is an indicator that the building has been completed to consented documentation only. It has nothing to do with

the quality standards set by consumer protection measures. Keeping in mind that the Building Code and subsequent building consent documentation is about ensuring a minimum standard, the CCC might only just be achieving this. Holding a driver's license doesn't mean you are a good driver and it is the same with CCC. It doesn't equate to quality, it just illustrates a minimum. You could have built to the highest of quality and design standards, and still not gain CCC first time. The second issue I had with this article was the manner in which it implied the failure of the buildings to gain Code Compliance Certificate had to do with the builder's competency. The builder is often not responsible for all

elements considered at the time of Compliance. There is a number of additional factors that are reviewed in issuing a CCC such as evidence of ownership, engineering reports, structural reports, payment of relevant fees, certificates relating to gas fitting and electrical work, and so on. There is an expansive amount of paperwork and a lot of detailed crossing of t's and dotting of i's that needs to go on. A process which can often be disjointed with so many factors, and individuals involved. In many cases the reason a CCC is denied is due to a break down in obtaining the appropriate paper work. The Building Act states that the code compliance certificate must be issued within a 20 working day period, during which time, the building consent authority can reasonably request further information about the application, suspending the time period until all
requested information has been received. As there is a provision in the law for more information to be requested, it provides for CCC not to be achieved first go. Stating that the failure rate has risen 45 per cent from pre-quake levels, the article did provide me with some food for thought with this correlation. However perhaps logic prevails, that with an increase in building numbers there would be an increase in all other associated figures… Throughout our lives we come across numerous facts and figures, some of which are relavant and impact the manner in which we operate and achieve, and others, which are irrelevant. The fact that some buildings didn't meet CCC is irrelevant. As is who the builders are! www.caarc.co.nz * New Canterbury Homes Failing Building Surveys by Tess McClure was published in The Press on 28/02/2015.

The class of glass
By Cheryl Colley
Sleek and seamless, elegant, timeless and contemporary – that's the look that can be achieved with frameless glass from Euroglass. Since 1986 Euroglass has been solely dedicated to the design, manufacture and installation of frameless glass systems for both residential and commercial buildings.
“WE'VE HAD A REAL RUN ON OUR GLASS FOR WINDBREAKS AROUND DECKS AND OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS THIS PAST SUMMER, ESPECIALLY IN THE HILL SUBURBS.”
S
ay the words frameless glass and the usual images that come to mind are shower enclosures and bathroom mirrors and shelves. Indeed Euroglass offer a wide range of innovative, stylish and simply beautiful solutions for shower enclosures and bathroom glass requirements. Every installation is custom-designed to achieve a complete and perfect solution specific to a particular bathroom and is professionally fitted by Euroglass's skilled installers. But frameless glass has wider domestic applications than bathrooms alone. Its versatility is clear when you realise it can be used in kitchens as splashbacks, as stairway balustrades, as fencing for swimming pools or as windbreaks. “We've had a real run on our
glass for windbreaks around decks and outdoor living areas this past summer, especially in the hill suburbs,” says Graeme Kench of Euroglass. “It makes the perfect shelter from the easterly wind while not blocking out any of the spectacular views.” Another new residential service offered by Euroglass is retro-fitting of double glazing. Euroglass in Christchurch has also been involved with some large commercial projects. It has manufactured and installed all the exterior and interior glass for the new Tait Communications' building on Wooldridge Rd. Anyone who has driven past this complex will understand how significant an undertaking that was. Office fit-outs can benefit particularly from frameless glass partitions and doors, ensuring
