ince Sharon Collins and John Ktenidis took over the iconic two-level restaurant and café Salt on the Pier they have, as they dreamed, lifted it to a different level with new gastronomic delights; and things just keep right on tantalising locals and visitors. Large windows allow you to dine practically on the coastline, part of the ever-changing seascape, and it makes for a memorable experience whether you have popped in for a delightful coffee, a light lunch on the sunny deck, a romantic dinner for two or even a group function. Salt on the Pier is already geared up for the festive season and you should make your booking soon if you would like to take advantage of the unique slant this vibrant restaurant has on Christmas and the wonderful days around it. School holidays are close, and with warmer weather, this means trips to splash in the water and kick some sand around – and there is Salt on the Pier in the centre of it all – wonderful food and refreshments always. New Brighton is well known for its Guy Fawkes celebration – a glorious explosion of light pretty much visible from greater Christchurch. And

facilities are fine tuned, the service immaculate, the food awesome, and the atmosphere unique. Then there is the summer festival running from January through until February – New Year for an amazing dinner, buskers thrilling the crowds from January 24, Kite Day on January 24, the Coast to Coast finishing in New Brighton on February 12 for the first time, and New Brighton Day on February 28. And the great Seaside Markets running on Saturdays are worth the visit. “The demographics are shifting a little,” says Sharon. “We are delighted by the mix of people coming in from a subtly changing Christchurch.” “And we are always tweaking our menu a little,” adds John. “We keep favourites, but our team has the creative flair to keep the menu fluent and intriguing.”
