Penguins Saved by the Art of Knitting

Police Officer Saves Baby by Running with him to the Hospital

Surprise Hidden Inside a 1000 year-old Buddha Statue

2

This year the oldest man in Australia has spent his free time knitting for tiny penguins in need of wool sweaters. 109 year old Alfred Date was asked by Phillip Island’s Penguin Foundation to help save these little penguins’ lives after a large oil spill injured hundreds of the species only found in New Zealand and parts of Australia. The removable jumpers stopped them from trying to remove the sludge themselves and swallowing the toxic oil. It is clear that this is not a fashion statement and is only enabling the penguins to keep themselves apart from the fatal oil remains. Luckily the penguins are now fine as the Foundation has released a statement saying that they are no longer in need of anymore sweaters. PC Steve Norton from the Metropolitan Police answered a 999 call from Jo Paine in Wandsworth where a newborn baby stopped breathing. Experiencing parents’ worst nightmare when her two month old boy Harrison wasn’t breathing, Paine desperately attempted to do CPR whilst calling 999. She feared an ambulance would take too long and was panicking as Harrison was unresponsive, so she ran outside and bumped into PC Norton. He said that “Jo just handed him to me and said ‘I don’t know what else to do’… I just grabbed him and ran.” Norton ran straight to the hospital, acting on his fatherly instinct that made him think “if he were my son I’d want to get him help as quickly as possible.” Harrison made a full recovery due to the officer’s incredible act of kindness. A Chinese Buddha statue had been on display at a museum in the Netherlands but was recently transported to the Meander Medical Centre to try and shed light on the ancient mystery using modern technology. What they didn’t expect to find in the 1000 year-old statue was that inside was a mummy of a Buddhist monk in a lotus position! The CT scan further revealed that the monk’s organs had been taken and replaced with paper, printed with Chinese characters. It is not understood how the organs were removed. It is believed that the body inside the statue is the Buddhist aster Liuquan who was a member of the Chinese Meditation School and whom died around 1100 AD. This mummy is thought to be the only one ever discovered inside a Buddha statue and is on display in Budapest but will travel to another museum in Luxembourg in May 2015.

“Aliens gave us our band name” An Interview with The Bluebook Project by Nicole Percival

”A heavy early Oasis” and ”Heavy rock’n’roll with high energy, drive and rock bite” are only two compliments out of the ones present on The Bluebook Project’s Facebook profile. Since 2013, the band has been named Bedford’s ‘Best Emerging Band’ and has supported bands such as Slaves and Coasts while they’ve been on tour. Only recently coming off of one of their own in North England, the band’s lead vocalist, Dan Thorn, and their lead guitarist, Jordan Smith, popped by with a ‘fresh-off-the-press’ copy of their new EP, ‘Out of the Blue’, and time for a chat… Int: How did the band form? Did you guys know each other before hand? Dan T: That’s a pretty long story… Jordan: Tell it! Dan T: Me, Jordan, and the rhythm guitarist. Dan (W), all went to school together, but I didn’t really hang around with them. I was really good mates with Dan (W). Me and Dan were out one night, had a few beers, and decided to put a band together…Jordan and Dan (W) went to Bedford College together, on a plumbing course, and we found our rhythm guitarist online somewhere Jordan: Yeah, on a dating website Int: Is it hard juggling full-time work and band rehearsals? Jordan: I think we’re pretty good at it…

Dan T: *scoffs and indicates to Jordan* Ask him! *imitates Jordan* Oh, sorry, I can’t jam tonight, guys! I have to do this! Jordan: Well, I’m self-employed, so I’ve got lots of stuff going on, but it’s not that bad Dan: Nah, it’s not Jordan: You just fit it into your spare time Int: How do you feel about the reaction from the fans? Dan T: It’s tough, like, it depends ‘cause sometimes you’ll go play in front of a crowd and it’ll be a good reception. I mean, we’ve never had a bad reception, but it all depends on what you’re playing, what time it is,

who’s there. It depends if the crowd wants to have fun Int: Do you have a favourite venue? Where the crowd’s been really good? Dan T: I think Esquire’s last time, upstairs, was really good. The crowd really bought it Int: What does it feel like performing on stage? Do you get a buzz? Jordan: Yeah, I think it’s like a drug, to be honest. It’s a good laugh…When we first started going out there, it’s kinda like, butterflies and “Oh my god!”, and they you come off and it’s like “Woah, bloody hell!”. It’s mad, but it’s a good feeling Dan T: Yeah, you want more Jordan: It goes too quickly, ‘cause you spend half an hour waiting for your set, and it’s a long time, and then, on stage, it just flies by Int: You guys have been compared to a ‘heavy early Oasis’. How does that make you feel? Jordan: I think that’s a good thing, ‘cause we all love Oasis. They’re one of our inspirations Int: Do you have any other inspirations? Jordan: Quite a few, really Dan T: We’re all quite different, like *to Jordan* you like Nirvana, I like The White Stripes and The Ramones Jordan: I think we love everything, to be honest Int: If you ever got the chance to perform at the big festivals, would you take on music as a full-time career? Jordan: Yeah, I’d just drop everything! Dan T: That’s our dream. That’s the aim Int: What’s an EP? For people who don’t know Jordan: I think it stands for… Extended Playlist...?

Int: If you got the chance to record with any musician, who would it be? Jordan: That’s a good one Dan T: Alive or dead? Int: Either Dan T: That’s even harder! Jordan: I think Michael Jackson would be quite a good one. That’d be mad!... You wouldn’t get anything done Dan T: My answer is not gonna be as good as that…Maybe Bowie? David Bowie, but as Iggy Stardust Int: Standard question- do you have any tips or words of advice for people wanting to start a band? Jordan: I reckon just to have fun with it, and if you get bored, there’s not really much point in carrying on with it Dan T: If you want to take it further, just prepared to put in the effort Int: A finally question- how did you get the name of the band? Jordan: Dan? Dan T: Well, I used to really like UFOs and aliens, and I was watching something about ‘Project Blue Book’ that the FBI did, so I just took that, added a ‘the’ and switched the words around to create ‘The Bluebook Project’… Basically, aliens gave us our band name

The Bluebook Project’s latest EP ‘Out of the Blue’ is available for download on their Facebook page (/TheBluebookProject), featuring the songs ‘Heavy-Headed’ and ‘See What’s Real’, and you can follow the band on Twitter @thebbpband. Check them out also on SoundCloud@thebluebookproject 4

AMAZING CAT PROTECTS ABANDONED BABY FROM FREEZING TO DEATH! Masha, a communal tabby cat, saved the life of a baby left in the ice cold snow in the Russian streets after she discovered a box the baby box was left in. Masha, acting upon her motherly instincts, climbed in and kept him warm and safe, health officials have said. A hospital spokeswoman stated to Central European News that “the baby had only been outside for a few hours and thanks to Masha, he was not damaged by the experience”. The extremely clever cat knew she needed to get someone’s attention therefore meowed in order to attract a passer by. Despite the fact that she is a communal cat so is not owned by anyone, the local residents often feed her food and look after her. Obninsk resident Irina Lavrova was the person who recognised the familiar meowing. Knowing that Masha rarely makes this sound as she is “very placid and friendly”resulted in Lavrova believing the neighbourhood pet had injured herself. She searched around the area and was quite shocked to find her lying in a box next to a baby! The boy, who appeared to be unharmed and well was immediately rushed to the hospital to have routine checks. Declared fit and healthy, the child is doing well. When he was found, he was well-dressed with a hat and the person who left him left several nappies and a few jars of baby food. However, the biological mother or father has not been found. Since the unlikely occurrence, Masha has been welcomed as a hero by the locals and has even been obtaining many benefits! “Everyone in the block is very proud of her” Lavrova said. “We have all spoilt her rotten by giving Masha her favourite food”. This shows the vast appreciation towards this cat by everyone who thanks her dearly for saving a life. By: Shanai Momi 8

Oops Moments… Confessions from your fellow students by Shanai Momi That’s Not My Mum! My mum and I were out shopping and I stopped for a while to look at some clothes. I saw my mum at the till so gathered the clothes I chose and ran to the cash register. I soon registered that my ‘mum’ was not in fact my mum, it was someone else entirely! I mumbled my apologies and got out of there as quick as I could! Needless to say, I didn’t get the clothes and was completely embarrassed after that! Utterly Awkward

Unhealthy

I’ve been told this is quite common but nevertheless still cringe-worthy: the time when someone smiles at you and you wave back…only to realise they are smiling to the person behind you…

When you’ve only walked up two flights of stairs to get to your next class and you try incredibly hard not to sound out of breath… and you fail.

Fashion-Flop

What can I say? I like to dance

This way a few years ago when wearing your jeans halfway down your legs was the fashionable thing. I was walking to my class and they fell down! Thankfully, it was only one of my friends who saw but I know someone was getting a good laugh once they saw it on the CCTV camera!

The embarrassing moment when you are singing at top of your lungs and dancing in a car at a red light. Then you realise the person in the car adjacent to yours is awkwardly staring at you.

Mario Time! Nintendo To Make Smartphone Games The move marks a departure from the Japanese gaming giant's longstanding policy of only producing games for consoles. The maker of the Super Mario and PokĂŠmon franchises says it is teaming up with Tokyo-based mobile gaming company DeNA to develop games for smartphone devices.

Election 2015 Who Should I Vote For In General Election 2015: 10 Tools To Help You Decide The following are all independent resources. None claim to tell you who to vote for, but all can give you information which could help you to choose who to pick on 7 May. (All this is useless if you forget to register to vote though - so sign up by 20 April.)

1) VoteMatch The most widely-used online voting quiz: over 1.2 million people took it for the 2010 General Election. VoteMatch offers up a selection of statements based on the policies of different parties (checked by the parties themselves) and asks you how strongly you agree or disagree with them. It aims to be an 'educational tool' and also has editions for different European election as well as the UK version. It is created by the campaign Unlock Democracy.

2) ISideWith This independent quiz adds new questions and issues each week, and was started bytwo data geeks who are into politics - with no shareholders or party affiliations. It asks you how much you agree with policies, and also how important they are to you.

3) They Work For You They Work For You is a great resource for information on MPs - enter your postcode and find information on your local representative. (There are technically no MPs at present as parliament has been dissolved before the election, so make sure you look at the list of MPs before 30th March.) You can see what they have voted for and against, what they have said recently in your name, and how often they rebel against their party line. It's run by my Society, a project by the charity UK Citizens Online Democracy, and uses information from Hansard, the official record of parliamentary debates.

4) Who Should You Vote For Using data from YourNextMP.com, another My Society website, Who Should Vote Forhosts four quizzes. It currently boasts pre-election questionnaires for voters in England and Scotland and will soon be updated with more extensive versions.
