Dear Neighbours

What a lovely, lovely month June is. It’s the month with more daylight than any other, summer but still with a few months ahead of us, the days of beautiful roses and delicious strawberries. For teenagers the exams will soon be over and for many the prom to look forward to, and for Dads it’s Father’s Day. Of course in the rush of daily life it is just a bit too easy to let the month go by without notice, so I thought I’d just draw it to your attention. We often find a free afternoon to pack a picnic and go to The New Forest, to Brownsea Island, to The Grange at Northington or even just to the grassy area in front of Winchester Cathedral and for just a few hours it feels like we are on holiday. It certainly gives us something to look back upon in six months’ time when we are in the dark of winter. There are lots of events on in June too. We were a little bit tight for space this month so there’s just a page’s worth list on page 83, but we’ve listed everything we can find on our website www.cfdirectory.co.uk. We add much more information to the website than we can fit in print, and also include the details of all of our advertisers so it’s worth referring there whether you are looking for something to do, or looking for someone to do something for you! If you enjoy gardening, you’ll appreciate our super new gardening writer, Pippa Greenwood, of Gardener’s World fame. And if the chance to open all the windows and doors inspires you to have a good sort-out, we’ve added a new feature on page 80 to help you reuse, recycle or declutter. Until next time, Tania

There is a very good reason why my family should buy me lots of presents this Father’s Day, which falls on 19 June. They, and all other families for that matter, should be queuing up at the nation’s department stores to spend, spend, spend on bottles of scotch, pipes, slippers, motoring sundries and all similar items beloved of dads in order to save the nation.

At this point I can quite clearly hear the cynics saying that’s all that Father’s Day is about – envious dads trying to even the score with mums, who are pampered, showered with gifts and generally spoilt rotten on Mother’s Day. I thought so myself until recently, but the truth is slightly different. For, surprisingly, Father’s Day was started by mums. Although the one utterly unsurprising thing is that they were American mums. But they didn’t have a consumer-led economic boost in mind. It was all far, far more serious than that. The first Father’s Day was held in Fairmont, West Virginia, on 5 July 1908, as a memorial service for more than 200 men recently killed in the Monongah Mining Disaster, leaving 1,000 fatherless children. It was a largely local affair, although in what seems to have been a case of simultaneous invention, the town of Spokane, Washington, held another Father’s Day service two years later. The idea belonged to Sonora Smart Dodd whose father William, a Civil War veteran, had raised six children on his own after his wife died in childbirth. This was at a time when motherhood was becoming increasingly sentimentalised and Mothering Sunday (the fourth Sunday in Lent) was being more and more widely celebrated. Dodd felt that men deserved an equal break (hurrah!). She won the support of the local YMCA and churches, and on the appointed Sunday – which, rather neatly for us in 2011, happened to be 19 June – YMCA members all went to church wearing roses in their lapels to honour their dads.

Spokane’s church service attracted much wider attention than Fairmont’s and became an annual event. President Wilson was a speaker at the 1916 event, and eight years later President Coolidge backed one of several failed bids in Congress to recognise it as a national holiday – an ambition finally realised by President Nixon only in 1972. A rather cheapskate holiday, though. As it’s always on a Sunday, nobody actually has a day off work. So last year was the centenary of the first Father’s Day. This was celebrated by the ringing of church bells and processions of grateful children bearing bottles of scotch. Well, it should have been, but it wasn’t. The reason – and I’m guessing here, but there must be a reason – was that everyone realised that the 101st anniversary was far worthier of celebration because, like the first, it falls on Trinity Sunday. If you’re a practising Christian (which I hasten to add, I’m not), you’ll see the significance of this. God the Son has loads of space in the liturgical calendar – Christmas, Easter, Ascension Day and so on. The Holy Ghost has Pentecost. But God the Father doesn’t have his own special day (there is a movement to dedicate the second Sunday in August to him). Trinity Sunday is the nearest we come. As I said, I’m not religious, but the symmetry still pleases. But what would really please me would be for someone to buy me a bottle of scotch…

Container Planting

SUE-perb GARDENS

ummer is the time we often think of planting baskets and pots with bedding plants but what about permanent planting? You can plant anything in a pot providing it is in the right size and has the right compost! Permanent plants in pots require a good loam based compost such as john Innes number three or ericaceous composts for acid loving plants such as Camellias and |Rhododendrons. Just remember to add feed and a top dressing of fresh compost each spring and to water regularly. Container planting gives you the opportunity to grow something you may not be able to grow in your garden and you can always move the pots around when you fancy a change! There are so many different styles to choose from, so go to your local garden centre and choose one and what ever plant takes your fancy! Don’t forget the compost!! Sue Fry

Gardening Feature Hanging Baskets The Hanging Gardens of Babylon may be the famous ones, but why not create a superbly colourful hanging basket of your own? Garden centres and nurseries are crammed full of summer bedding plants at this time of year and there are colours to suit every taste. If aerial gardening is not for you, then the same type of plants can be used to produce a superb container for your terrace, patio or backyard. The great thing about summer bedding containers is that you can do just about whatever you want in the way of planting ...and get away with it. So now that the frosts are over in most areas, why not start planting? All you need is readily available from your local garden centre: a goodsized basket - choose a 12” basket as it’s easier to keep moist than smaller ones, a hanging-basket liner (make sure it is the same diameter as the basket you’ve chosen), or a goodsized pot or planter with plenty of drainage holes. A good quality multi-purpose compost is essential for excellent results. What you choose is up to you, but the range is vast - Nemesia,

Surfinia Petunias, Upright Petunias, Cineraria ‘Silverdust’, purple-bronze leafed Thalia Fuchsias or their more traditional cousins, Pelargoniums, Lobelia ...the list is endless. Think carefully about colours and textures. Decide whether you’re going for subtle or brash and bold, or if you would like to coordinate the flowers with other garden features. If you are planting a basket, place it in a large flowerpot as this stops the round-bottomed basket from moving and makes it much easier to plant. Place the liner in the basket, adjusting it to fit the basket and trimming off any excess. Next add handfuls of compost up until the point where you want to plant around the sides of the basket. Planting slits are included in some liners. If you are using a pot, place a few inches of broken flower pots or large stones in the base and top up with compost to within a few

inches of the pot rim. Carefully remove the plants you need from their containers, easing the root balls out gently but firmly. An upright plant such as a Fuchsia or Pelargonium is a perfect choice for the centre of the basket or container as it helps to give your planting height and structure. For hanging baskets carefully ease the root ball of each through the planting slit and nestle the root ball in to the compost. It is easier posting the roots through and you’re less likely to do any long term damage. Any container looks better if there are plants cascading over the sides, so choose trailing plants and put these in around the edge. Space the trailing plants evenly around the sides of the basket. ...Continued on page 21 by Pippa Greenwood

Drizzle compost around and between the root balls of all the plants, making sure that each one has new and fresh compost to grow in to. Use your fingers to firm the compost and make sure that there are no gaps. It is best to use a combination of cascading plants and some upright ones around the outer edges of a basket. This will ensure a really well filled and colourful display and should help to hide the basket framework too. Once the planting is complete, water the container thoroughly using a watering can with the rose attached. It is best not to hang a basket up or stand a pot in its final position until it has had a few days ‘rest’ sitting in a cool spot out of too much hot, direct sunshine. This little rest period allows the plants to

settle in to their new home and perform better later on.

Tips for Keeping your Summer Planter or Basket Looking Great • Water regularly, never letting the compost dry out completely. Use a watering can with rose attached, or a gentle spray nozzle on the end of a hose to minimise the risk of disturbing the compost or the plants. • If the container does become too dry it may be difficult to re-wet the compost. If so, carefully sit it in a bowl of water for about an hour, allowing it to soak up the water it needs from the base and sides. • Regularly remove faded flowers, before they have a chance to set seed. This should help to encourage

the plants to continue producing more flowers. Pinching them off by hand works well for most plants but if the stems are a bit tough, use secateurs or sharp scissors. • Check regularly for any pests such as greenfly and treat the problem promptly. When plants are as tightly crammed together as they are in a flourishing basket or patio pot, problems soon build up and spread if you’re not quick off the mark. • Feed every couple of weeks with a high-potash liquid fertiliser such as a tomato feed, as this will help to encourage more flowers to develop. If you position a planter full of summer bedding on the paving beneath a hanging basket, then any excess water or feed from the basket won’t be wasted.

TECH SPEC

Holidays: a time to relax, turn off the phone and catch up on all those books you’ve been meaning to read. Thanks to ebook readers there’s no need to stuff your suitcase full of books when you travel, but which one’s the best for holiday reading?

What’s the best ebook reader for bookworms?

There are three big players in the UK ebook market: Apple, with its iPads; Amazon, with its Kindle; and Sony, with its Reader devices. There are others for example Waterstone’s offers a range of ebook readers from firms including Elonex and iRiver, while recent Androidpowered tablet computers boast Google Books software - but for now it’s a three-horse race. There are some big differences between the devices. If you want a do-it-all that doubles as an ebook reader, then Apple’s iPad 2 is the way to go: it’s a proper computer that can edit video, make music, browse the Internet and play games. Androidpowered tablets are very similar. There are downsides to all that power, though. The first is price - iPad 2s start at around £440, rising to nearly £700 for the top-end model. The second is the screen - tablet computers use laptop-style screens, which are hopeless in direct sunlight. They’re also power hungry. The iPad’s ten-hour battery life is impressive in computer terms, but

it’s terrible compared to a device such as Amazon’s Kindle. The Kindle (pictured here) has an e-ink display, which is the closest to real ink on paper from an electronic device. That means it’s quite happy in direct sunlight, very easy on the eyes – there’s no tired-eyes feeling that comes from staring at a screen for hours - and it’s very small and light, although it also means the Kindle can’t cope with colour images, let alone video. E-ink only uses power when you change the page, so battery life is extraordinary: tablets need charging daily, but e-ink devices last for weeks between charges. There are two Kindles: the Wi-Fi-only one at £111, and the 3G one at £152. The former is the better bet. Unless you intend to read newspapers on it (you can subscribe and have them delivered wirelessly) there’s no real need for a 3G mobile connection simply transfer books via Wi-Fi when you’re at home. Kindles store up to 3,500

books, so you’re unlikely to run out of things to read when you’re travelling. The problem with the Kindle is that it’s an Amazon-only effort: if you want to read copyprotected books (most mainstream ebook releases are copy-protected), you’ll need to buy them from Amazon. It’s a similar story with the iPad 2 - its iBooks software expects you to buy from the iBooks shop. If that sounds too restrictive, then Sony would like to show you something. Sony’s Readers (pictured below) are based on the same idea as the Kindle and costs much the same (at the time of writing the PRS350 is £149), but it has two interesting features: its e-ink screen is a touch screen, which makes using the device much easier, and its formats of choice are EPUB and PDF. Such books are sold in all kinds of places - all Waterstone’s titles are in EPUB or PDF format so you’re not limited to a single ebook shop. So what’s best? If you want a do-everything device, choose a tablet - but if you’re a bookworm, try an e-ink display.

Our final thought... The choice ultimately comes down to your favourite bookshop. If it’s Amazon, choose a Kindle; if it isn’t, think Sony.

Smile Bright A bright white smile is associated with youth and vitality because as we age, our teeth start to discolour naturally. Whilst good dental health is an essential basis for your youthful smile, many external factors can make otherwise good teeth look unhealthy. So how can you address this? The first step is to avoid the things that cause your teeth to yellow in the first place. Smoking, coffee (particularly black coffee), tea, red wine, cola drinks and curry will all cause discolouring. If you do indulge, brush your teeth as soon as practical afterwards. For red wine or cola using a straw will minimise the effects as this delivers the liquid into your mouth without touching your teeth. Crunchy, raw foods such as

carrots, celery and apples are natural cleaners. They encourage your mouth to salivate and can help to rub off the plaque that sticks to your teeth. There are many whitening toothpastes available although some can be pricey. Often the main ingredient in these toothpastes is baking soda. You can make your own paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda although it won’t taste great and you shouldn’t use it every day as it can be abrasive. If toothpaste and vegetables are not enough to make a noticeable difference, then the next option is to go for a teeth whitening treatment. It is possible to buy kits to do this at home and this is certainly a cost effective way of getting a bright white smile. However, treatment from a dentist will both achieve better results and be much quicker.

When did I get so fat? Charlotte Dalby had many excuses for her weight getting out of control, not least of which was that four operations in four years on her hips and legs meant she could not exercise as much as she wanted to. Here is her story:

T

his isn’t a story of ‘woe is me’ but a personal journey to get back on track. When I was 11 I broke my leg, and at the age of 16 noticed whilst swinging my leg on the floor, one kept hitting the floor while the other swung free. After a visit to a podiatrist, it was confirmed that the once broken leg was one inch shorter than the other. Over the years this gave me severe back-pain and hip displacement to the point where the pain was so bad that I was taking pain killers just to get out of bed every morning. Eventually an X-ray showed it was a ‘bone’ problem. Since then I’ve had various major and minor operations and although now finally feel I’m back on track, it’s been a long haul. All this had slowed my life, reduced my self-esteem and made me depressed. On top of that my weight - well, that seemed to creep up. One photograph of me getting out of a lake at a triathlon sent me into shock: when had I got so fat? Later that day I returned home to find a Slimming World leaflet through the letterbox. Perhaps this was the time to rethink and change lifestyle, to get ‘on my bike’ and do something positive. I can still remember the feelings I had on my first night walking though that door, “I

shouldn’t be here, I don’t need to be here”. But everyone was so friendly from the beginning encouraged by all around and I really felt encouraged me to ‘go for it’ – and go for and supported. My consultant it I have. I like to think I am was always available, e-mailed an ideas person, naturally during the week, sent texts administratively well organised to encourage, phoned me if and now I’m really looking I needed it…all of which did forward to being a Consultant the trick and kept me on track. at my own club where I found The group members shared so much help and support. helpful hints, were empathetic Like all Consultants I am and to weight gains shared ups still remain a Slimming world and downs of family life and member. were genuinely pleased for each other with weight and shape changes. E i g h t months later and one and half stone lighter I am fitter, brighter and full of beans. Isn’t it time you enjoyed the retirement you’ve always dreamed of?

If you are 55 or over and own your own home, then Equity Release could be the answer • Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime holiday • Give your children their inheritance early • Purchase a new car • Have a conservatory or extension added • Have spare cash for unexpected • Make ends meet • Pay off a traditional mortgage occurrences • Achieve peace of mind * Here at Dulay Barker Reeves, we can offer you truly impartial advice, surveying the whole market to find the right financial products for your individual needs. Equity release may involve a lifetime mortgage or home reversion plan. To understand the features and risks ask for a personalised illustration.

For a free initial consultation with no obligation, please call Warren Barker on :-

023 8025 3585 or please email warren@dulaybarkerreeves.co.uk www.dulaybarkerreeves.co.uk There will be a fee for mortgage advice. The precise amount will depend upon your circumstances but we estimate that it will be £750. CHECK THAT THIS MORTGAGE WILL MEET YOUR NEEDS IF YOU WANT TO MOVE OR SELL YOUR HOME OR YOU WANT YOUR FAMILY TO INHERIT IT. IF YOU ARE IN ANY DOUBT, SEEK INDEPENDENT ADVICE. * alternative non-equity release funding options may be preferable/cheaper in the long term.

“It has enabled us to take longer holidays – and put in a conservatory – without affecting the rest of our lifestyle” Equity Release could be the painless way to realise your retirement aspirations More and more people are experiencing the benefit that Equity Release brings to their lives. Research from the industry body, Safe Home Income Plans, shows that the average amount of money that people realised from their property through an Equity Release scheme in the first quarter of 2009 was £48,287, 16% more than in the same period in 2008. Many people find themselves in need of extra cash, but are wary of simply borrowing it. In the current economic climate, that’s understandable. Things are uncertain. What is certain, of course, is the bricks and mortar you live in and your mortgage on that property. Using those certainties is good way to raise that extra money. That is why Equity Release is right for so many people – and may be right for you.

“We are doing exactly what we dreamed of doing in our retirement – better holidays, a new kitchen, a loft conversion – and spare cash for peace of mind”

You have to be over a certain age (usually 55) and own your own home to qualify for Equity Release. A lifetime mortgage enables you to continue living in your own home, rather than downsizing or relocating, and provides you with a lump sum or regular income, or both, depending on your requirements. Your personal situation is different from everyone else’s, so it is important to speak to a fully qualified adviser to discuss your needs and decide whether Equity Release is suitable for you. For instance, Equity Release may adversely affect your state benefits and taxation. THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY | kevin@cfdirectory.co.uk

Hampshire Heritage A new series of articles introducing you to some of the off-thebeaten-track historical places of interest to visit in Hampshire.

P

ortchester Castle is a medieval castle and former Roman fort, with the latter dating back to the 3rd century. It is thought that the fort was one of several built along the British coast to combat raids by pirates. Located at the head of Portsmouth Harbour, it formed the centre around which Portchester was built. Its Latin name is “Portus Adurni” which means ‘port at the hill.’ The castle is thought to have been built in the late 11th century and probably by William Maudit who was granted the manor of Portchester after the Norman Conquest. The walls are 6m

36

high and 3m thick and the castle would have been defended by a wooden palisade and a moat, with the pre-existing Roman stone walls of the fort acting as the defense of the outer bailey. The property passed through the Maudit family and was probably rebuilt in stone around the 1130s. King Henry II took over possession in 1154, which started several hundred years of royal rule, before passing to the Southwick Estate in the 17th century. Portchester Castle has the most complete Roman walls in Europe and a small Norman church, St Mary’s, has also survived on the site.

Portchester Castle is managed by English Heritage and is open from 10am – 6pm until the end of September. There is an exhibition in the keep which displays finds excavated on site as well as an audio tour. EH members enter free. Adults £4.80, children £2.90 with concessions and family tickets available.

Unexpected and individual, unique and environmentally friendly, well-made and timelessly appealing – how does this sound?

Something Old Something New Whether we’re talking vintage, retro, antique or, erm, just plain old, there are heaps of good reasons why adding a well-chosen selection of ‘mature’ furnishings to any room scheme can be enormously successful. Old pieces make a statement, have a fascinating history and are built to last. The quality of old pine, for example, is vastly superior to that of new pine (and a nicer colour, too), and old mirrors are much more flattering. What’s more, including even just one antique piece in an otherwise-modern room will add texture and subtle individuality. But just how do you combine old with new, contemporary with classic? Especially when the aim is to be both good-looking and practical, with a look that won’t go out of fashion in the next five minutes. As with all interior design schemes, it’s best to start by assessing your room. Measure it and draw a plan, marking in such key elements as windows, doors, built-in cupboards, radiators, light fittings,

Fresh, modern colours and a vintage vibe contrast beautifully with Georgian architecture. Victoriana bedstead, £299 and Crochet rug, £250; Marks & Spencer (0845 302 1234; www.marksandspencer.com)

plus sockets and so on. Do you need to make any structural changes? If so, now’s the time. If the structure is fine, consider the room’s size and shape, and whether its architectural style will affect the way in which

you decorate. Work out where furniture will go, and whether you have too much or too little of it. Now you have a good idea of what type of things you’ll need to look out for – whether you’re planning a trip to the ...Continued on page 60 by Katherine Sorrell

high street, a charity shop, car boot sale or auction house. The next important principle is to concentrate on timeless designs. If it’s well designed, whatever era it dates from, it will work with other pieces. Another good rule is to keep floors, walls and woodwork neutral. They won’t date and, more importantly, won’t clash with your one-off furnishings. On a similar note, avoid having more than one, or perhaps two, ‘statement’ pieces in a room. When you have chosen a piece that you really love, you can build a scheme around it. It could be a chaise longue, a lamp or a hand-made vase – try to complement its characteristics with other key pieces and to provide a pleasant contrast with others. It’s a subtle one, this. Too much contrived matching and the room will look forced; too many contrasting elements and it will lack coherence. It all comes down to a combination of instinct and trial and error – just keep on trying until everything feels right. Colour can be an excellent ally, drawing together disparate

items so that they coordinate well. It could be that you reupholster an old armchair and choose co-ordinating cushions for a new sofa, adding in a picture with elements of the same colour, or a vase in a complementary shade. Bingo! An appealing room appears as if by magic. And of course, Adding an old piece into a new scheme can introduce gorgeous colour the easiest and texture. Equal Partners By Graham Payne

T

here is a myth believed by a lot of people who come to see me that if a couple live together as ‘Common Law Partners’, they have the same financial and legal rights over each other’s estate as a couple that are either married or have registered a civil partnership. Although I am doing by best to dispel this notion on an individual basis, I thought I would devote this month’s column to a very simple message ‘No, you don’t.’ If one half of a couple that is neither married nor in a civil partnership passes away, the surviving partner has no entitlement to the deceased’s estate. If they have lived together for more than two years and can prove financial dependency, there is a basis for a claim, but it could prove a lengthy and costly process. In essence, a Common Law Partner has no automatic rights to be asserted, so a valid Will is essential. However, even if one half of the couple names the other as a beneficiary to their estate in his/her Will, that person will neither benefit from the total exemption to inheritance tax nor a ‘transferable nil rate band’ that spouses and civil partners enjoy.

64

Let’s take a specific example of a couple I have been working for recently. He has a property worth £380,000 and she has a property worth £260,000. Even though both parties had gone to the trouble of clearly naming each other as beneficiaries in their Wills, they were oblivious to the amount of money that potentially could be lost in the payment of inheritance tax. If he had died, inheritance tax would have had to be paid for the property she inherited and, then when she passed away, tax would have to be paid on the estate for a second time. Since the current personal allowance before paying inheritance tax is £325,000, if the woman died and left her property to her surviving partner, no tax would have to be paid on her estate, but the benefit of tax free allowance on this amount would have been lost. With careful planning, inheritance tax liability to a common law partnership can be minimised or even wiped out totally. Part of this planning may involve transferring properties into joint names, thereby equalising the estates. Another serious

complication for Common Law partners is that is that if one partner is unable to manage their own financial affairs for any reason, the other may find themselves with no rights in the Court of Protection to act on their behalf. A partner could find themselves powerless to care for an ailing loved one without a Lasting Power of Attorney. The point I am trying to make is that if you decide not to formalise a relationship, but still wish to care for a surviving partner, there are steps you can take to make sure that your loved one is provided for in the best way possible.

Working from home In Sickness and in Health Being ill is simple when you work in an office. You just stay at home until you’re better. Of course, there are refinements. For example: do you ring in sick early, before the switchboard is warmed up, and leave a message hoping nobody will bother to call back? Or do you wait until the boss has his/her coffee, and then ring up and really lay it on with a trowel? The actor in me says the latter; the coward says the former.

well-defined and therefore more problematical for us workersfrom-home. You have to be really, really (a) or really, really (b) before you admit that you’re far too ill to crank up the PC. (And yes, it is possible to be really, really (b), although it feels more like apathy than illness).

It’s not so simple when you work from home, though, because work and home are the same place and – if you’ll pardon the metaphysics – the same time. If you’re an office worker with a snuffle that looks like it could turn nasty, then you make a decision at a specific time – ie the last moment you can leave home in time to catch the bus – not to go to a specific place – ie the office. If you work from home then that time doesn’t exist, and you’re already in that place.

Then there’s guilt. If you’re an office-worker, there’s a simple piece of political philosophy that can utterly zap employee guilt: it’s called Marxism. All value is labour, says Karl: the value of goods and service precisely equates the labour that has gone into them. Capitalists become rich by appropriating most of the value of the workers’ labour; so every moment you spend at work you’re being robbed. By calling in sick, you keep your miserly share of the value of your labour – without actually surrendering the labour itself. So throwing a sickie is a crime prevention measure and a blow for social justice. Don’t feel guilty, feel proud! But if you’re selfemployed then you are both capitalist and labourer, so whichever way you look at it you’re robbing yourself. Again, don’t feel guilty: feel confused.

So how do we workersfrom-home decide when we’re too ill to go to work? Well, there are two options: (a) when we’re genuinely too ill to get out of bed, and (b) when we’re not really that ill but there’s nothing vital to do. These two states of ill-health correspond exactly to those that keep office workers at home; it’s the process of deciding exactly when one or the other has been attained and then acting on it that is less

My musings on illness were prompted by a recent bout of flu during which

I ran a high temperature and so enjoyed a state of mild delirium. During my uncontrolled mental ramblings two (mercifully short) poems leapt fullyformed into my fevered brain. I don’t pretend to understand them. Delirium is the twin brother of dreaming, and just as incomprehensible. But they made me laugh, so here they are. ODE TO WILLIAM HAGUE Whether you take this ode as a compliment is up to you. It’s just something that’s there, and perhaps slightly surprising, Like suddenly seeing your portrait painted on a boulder Or tattooed on the rear end of a pig. STEPHEN FRY IS WATER Stephen Fry is water. He is everywhere and necessary, The loving gift of a bountiful God. Not enough Stephen Fry and we wither. Too much and our carpets get wet. No, I don’t get it either. by Ted Browning

The Way I See It By Gordon Moore

I

used to dismiss our nextdoor neighbour as nasty and boring but lately I’ve been won over. When we moved to Chandlers Ford 15 years ago, I rarely paid a visit to the elderly relic. Her place always looked dilapidated and dirty but at last things are being tidied up. It’s dawned on me just how old she is and how much I can learn from her. The neighbour’s name, by the way, is Southampton. The port city may not be the over-the-fence sort of neighbour but she is next door to Chandlers Ford as a whole, and she affects us all. What first awakened me to the fact that Southampton has more than litter, grime and a football team of fluctuating fortunes was the opening of West Quay shopping centre in 2000. Then I noticed that the contents of Southampton’s free art gallery were worth a gawp. I could see that its grand medieval city gate was a lot bigger than the one at the top of Winchester High Street. And I found that the gate, or bar, was just a part of Southampton’s magnificent city walls. Nearly half of these mighty

68

stone ramparts are still standing. You can climb along the battlements most of the way from one end of the ancient walled city to the other. Southampton has always been a port. You can still see the arch through which Henry V marched his army to the docks before embarking to bash the French at the Battle of Agincourt. Much of the city was bombed to rubble in World War II but evidence of a phase as an elegant spa somehow survive, in the form of several Georgian terraced houses. These posh homes were built for wealthy idlers wanting a sip from a local spring, and a dip in Southampton Water. To understand Southampton you have to realise that much of its centre used to be under water. The central station was once lapped by waves. West Quay, Leisure World and the major hotels are all built on reclaimed land. These vast acres were raised from sea and estuary in order to expand the docks into today’s global shipping hub. Southampton is the busiest liner port in Britain and the second-biggest

container port. Unlike other ports, where shipping has moved downstream, Southampton has kept its wharves zap bang in the city centre. If you go to the cinema at Leisure World, you park in the shadow of a six-high mountain of shipping containers from around the globe. The Titanic sailed from here, and that tragic voyage will figure large in a new maritime museum being built alongside the Civic Centre. Southampton has a buzz, from vibrant inner-city streets where immigrants make their culture felt, to performance pubs where top university students let their hair down. One of my favourite views is from the footbridge over Millbrook Station. I admit this is a bleak and windswept spot but from here you see the exciting heart of Southampton. It’s a busy scene bathed in electric light – all anyone could wish for in terms of dramatic piles of cargo, huge cranes and vast ships. How did I ever think our neighbour boring? Get to know the old lady this summer.

MOTORING FEATURE

Rising In Value

So here are our depreciation-busting top picks

Car buyers are used to driving their new purchase off the forecourt and it instantly plummeting in value. It’s a fact of motoring life. Or is it? What if we told you there are some cars out there that are actually rising in value? And we’re not just talking about automotive exotica either. We spoke to experts from trade price bible CAP as well as leading auction house BCA to uncover the cars that are turning residual values on their heads. ‘There are some classic and sports cars that will keep going up in value,’ one expert told us. ‘Others will simply hold firm. But it’s all dependent on how much you use them and their condition.’ Jeep Wrangler This one surprised us too. CAP has found that the Hard Top 4.0 Sahara two-door model with an automatic gearbox has risen £475 in the last 12 months to a trade price of £5,450. CAP says even at this price it’s considered to be a cheap, heavy-duty vehicle – but only for those that can afford to run it. MINI BCA says despite the volumes currently being sold, the Mini is a future classic in waiting. The auction house told us that One models are selling well for around £3,500 to £4,000 even with as many as 100,000 miles on the clock. But prices for well looked after Countryman, Convertible and Clubman models are the firmest. Ford GT London-based dealer Clive Sutton specialises in selling the most exclusive supercars. He often sees cars rise in value, but if he was spending his money it would be the Ford GT he’d shell out on. ‘The Ferrari Enzo was the one to go for a while ago, but prices have cooled,’ he told us. ‘Now the Ford GT is the car to invest in.’ Audi R8 It’s the V8-engined sports car from Audi that’s popular with buyers, reports CAP. Our experts said it had a slow start in the used market, but in the last 12 months a 2007 model with 20,000 miles has risen £1,900 in the trade to £53,100. ‘It’s increasing in popularity,’ said CAP’s man in the know. Aston Martin DB7 This is a good sign that the recession is easing. Prices for the Volante Convertible version of the stunning Aston Martin DB7 have risen £1,300 in the trade during the last year, according to CAP. An 04-reg, 50,000 miler currently costs £31,400. ‘Today’s buyers appear less concerned about running costs than they were 12 months ago,’ said CAP. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

One of my favourite places in the world to visit with my band is the USA. We’ve now toured there five times and every year I learn something new about the country. In light of this, I thought it might be of use to other aspiring musicians out there to publish what I like to call The British Rock Musician’s Top Three Tips For Surviving The States:

An Englishman In New York 1. Beware of US Customs Officials Americans are, in my experience, the friendliest people in the world. Bearing this in mind, it’s a little offputting that the very first people you meet when you arrive in the USA make Vlad The Impaler look like Sooty. And they’re particularly suspicious of musicians. I remember an unfortunate conversation that took place between a customs official at Newark Airport and our innocent young sound engineer, Danny, who happened to be carrying an unusually-shaped (and frankly bomb-like) aluminium flightcase of mine out through security: Official: Whadda you got there, young man? Danny: What? Official: That case. What is it? Danny: Um... Official: I mean, PRETTY FUNNY-LOOKING SUITCASE, dontcha think? Danny: Not really. Official: What’s inside it? Danny: I don’t know. Official: YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT’S INSIDE IT? Danny: No. Official: How can you not know what’s inside it? Danny: It’s not mine. Somebody just gave it to me to carry through. For reasons that I won’t enter into now, the case in question was in fact full of my pants. When I stepped in and produced a handful of boxers from inside, I could see the

guy trying with all his might to understand why somebody would buy an indestructible metal box in which to transport their underwear. He was not amused. 2. Don’t underestimate the weather American weather is ARMAGEDDON WEATHER. We had a show booked at an amphitheatre in New Jersey once that had to be postponed following a thunderstorm of such epic proportions that ornaments rattled on mantelpieces and cars rocked in the street. If you pop out for a pint of milk in high summer and become caught up in an East Coast hot-storm, there’s a very decent chance you’ll come back missing limbs. This is the reason the apocalyptic weather movie ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ was set in the States. If that film had played out in the UK, it would have been three haggard dinner-ladies sitting around a kitchen table in Hull, staring out through rain-flecked windows across a deserted car park and going ‘Look Pat - it’s drizzlin’ again.’ 3. Never, ever visit the States when you’re on a diet This is perhaps a rather obvious point, but it’s worth mentioning anyway because when you’re on the road in between gigs you’ll find it spectacularly difficult to avoid the lure of American fast food. And at the end of the day, why

would you even want to? The Americans are, for instance, responsible for the invention of a fantastic radioactive liquid ‘cheese-food’ called Whizz that represents an important element of the legendary Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwich. Cheese Whizz has the precise look and texture of that yellow poster paint you find in primary schools. Fortunately it tastes a lot better but, self-evidently, Whizz has about as much in common with actual cheese as Paris Hilton does with the capital of France. And it’s absolutely fantastic. I could go on, of course, but there’s simply not space here. Perhaps one day I will release a compendium. In the meantime, travel safe people and, when a sandwich-maker in Philadelphia asks you if you want that ‘wit whizz’, always say yes. Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents, worked with Sting’s producer and starred in a T-Mobile advert. Chris is currently working on his first novel, “Mockstars”. Read more of Chris’ blogs and tour diaries at www.TheLightyears.com. by Chris Russell

Freecycle®

Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. News from Winchester and Eastleigh’s MP Steve Brine

T

his month marks one year since I was elected as the Member of Parliament for Winchester & Chandler’s Ford. To say that year has flown by is an understatement but it has been the most incredible 12-months you can imagine. When the family and I are out and about in the constituency, people will stop to chat or ask about the issue that is on their mind and I love that part of the job. ‘We live in interesting times’ they often say and who could deny that. When a country is spending more each day repaying the interest on its debt than it is on schools and the police combined, the post-1997 scenario when tax revenues far outstripped spending seems to belong to a different age and I think absolutely everything about this Parliament has to be seen through that lens. I don’t agree with everything the coalition is doing, but on the central argument of the day, I think the Government is right to stick to the plan set out last Autumn to get Britain living within her means again. We simply could not carry on as

82

we were. As someone who ran a small business before entering Parliament, I am clear we have to reform the economy to ensure jobs and growth, while doing what we can to help local families with the ever-rising cost of living. I think local businesses will welcome the further reductions in corporation tax announced in the recent budget and an extension of the small business rate relief holiday until October 2012. I have long argued we should lift the poorest people out of tax altogether when affordable, so am pleased to see a further increase in the personal tax allowance. I know many people locally will welcome a new shared equity scheme to help them get onto the housing ladder and the cut in petrol duty was very welcome if not a drop in the ocean. I hope charities across the area will be pleased to hear of the reform of Gift Aid and all the measures we are taking to increase the culture of giving. Finally, I was delighted to hear of tough new measures to further crack down on unfair tax avoidance. If we are all in

Steve Brine - MP for Winchester & Chandler’s Ford

this together, that has to be right and fair. Locally, my work continues to centre around a bulging caseload and we literally help hundreds of people each month. Not in ways you read about in the press, but in subtle, quiet and often very private ways that mean the world to individual constituents. In addition of late I have met with the revamped Hampshire Tourism Service, discussed the future with an inspirational youth counselling charity, helped Christian Aid raise vital funds and opened a new children’s shoe shop in Winchester. I’ve seen Mervyn King open the excellent new Business school at our University, learned about foundation training at P.E.T.A in the city centre and had the pleasure to toast Bishop Michael and his lovely wife Lou at a special leaving dinner hosted by the Mayor at Abbey House. Oh and I do love a good wedding; I wish William and Kate every luck for the future! You can find more on my work locally and get in touch via www.stevebrine.com or 01962 791110.
