At the risk of getting way too geo-political for this entertaining and informative community newspaper; I can't help but notice what's going on in the Unites States with newly enacted policies along with all the racial, religious, ethnic and social class tensions that have been escalating. Too see so much division and hate makes me very sad, but you know what makes me more happy than anything? Being in Bocas del Toro and proudly taking part in a compassionate, multi-ethnic, bilingual and beautifully diverse group of individuals who are weaved together in the vibrant and revolutionary social fabric that makes up this incredible community. When you put things in perspective, I hope you'd admit that life in Bocas del Toro is pretty stellar, no matter what imperfections might exist.

Arriesgándome a ser demasiado geopolítico para este periodico informativo comunitario; no puedo evitar notar lo que sucede en los Estados Unidos con las nuevas leyes promulgadas junto con la tensión de clase racial, religiosa, etica y social que ha ido en escala. El ver tanta división y odio me pone muy triste, pero ¿sabes lo que me hace más feliz que nada? El estar en Bocas del Toro y orgullosamente ser parte en grupo de individuos tan compasivos, multi éticos, bilingües, y bellamente diversos que fue tejido en una vibrante revolucionaria tela social que compone nuestra increíble comunidad. Cuando se ponen las cosas en perspectiva, espero que puedas admitir que la vida en Bocas del Toro es muy estelar, sin importar cuales imperfecciones puedan existir.

BY: TEREZA HARP Bocas’ own cayuco team, Paunch, dominated at the race on the 21nd in Panama City, winning first place in the female category. Once at home in Bocas, they described the event: “We paddled out at the same pace with the top teams of the open male category, obtaining first position in the open female category, and we maintained that position all the way to the finish line.” How did you push through the mental blocks in the race? When it comes to endurance races, especially like the Ocean to Ocean race, it’s all mental. The body will tell you it’s tired, it will scream and yell at you to stop paddling and take a break. And you won’t, you can’t, it’s not an option. You learn to ignore pain. You learn to accept it. How has living in Bocas helped you? “This year we are fully powered by local business from Bocas del Toro, so we are 100% Bocas Represent. Bocas Dive Center, Divers Paradise Boutique Hotel and Bocas Dive Academy! Cayuco Paunch would not have existed this year without them. We receive so much support online and positive response from the Bocas community, that it’s hard to describe the feeling of achievement when we crossed that finish line and got news of our time score. It’s truly like Vikings going out to open sea’s and bringing home the treasures (gold medals!) to their families and friends.

Romaine follows a similar diet being a vegetarian. Angie and Julie still eat fish and chicken, but really make healthy food choices all through the season. We all feel great doing so and want to share this with others. The healthier the body the happier the soul!” These Vikings definitely brought home the gold! Looking at them, they are strong and tough women with an infectious confidence about them. Somehow these Bocas girls still manage to stay humble and focused in their improvement as athletes and as individuals. “We might not be the best each time, but we sure are better as a team and as individuals, after each training and each race. We aim to paddle 5 or 6 times a week in the open waters around Bocas. We have a recovery training at least once a week, we love to go to Bocas Yoga to follow Laura Kay’s class so we really stretch the muscles and keep them from tensing up too much.” “A lot of our time goes into this and we feel very tired from time to time, but that is the commitment and sacrifice that we put in exchange for the ever so rewarding feeling of breaking time records!” How does “Bocas Life” influence your lifestyle in preparation for these races? We love the water, the ocean, we all surf and Julie even lives on a sailboat. We are all very aware of how we live and compassionate with the planet, animals and our surroundings. We want more than anything to motivate others to become more active and make responsible and healthier choices for their daily food options and usage and impact on their surroundings (especially when it comes to the ocean).

EL Equipo de cayuco propio de Bocas, dominó en la carrera en día 21 en la Cuidad de Panamá, ganando el primer premio en la categoría femenina. Una vez de vuelta a casa en Bocas, ellas describieron el evento: "Remamos a la misma velocidad de los equipos principales de la categoría abierta masculina, obteniendo el primer lugar en la categoría abierta femenina, y pudimos mantener esa posición hasta la meta final." ¿Cómo pudieron superar los bloques mentales de esta carrera? Cuando se trata de carreras de resistencia, especialmente como carrera de Océano a Océano, todo es mental. El cuerpo te dirá que está cansado, te gritará y chillará que dejes de remar para tomar un descanso. Y tú no lo harás, no puedes, no es una opción. Aprendes a ignorar el dolor. Aprendes a aceptarlo. ¿Cómo les ha ayudado el vivir en Bocas?
"Este año estamos completamente accionados por negocios locales de Bocas del Toro, así que estamos representando a Bocas al 100 %. ¡Sin el Bocas Dive Center, el Divers Paradise Boutique Hotel y el Bocas Dive Academy el Cayuco Paunch no hubiera existido este año! Hemos recibido tanto apoyo en línea y respuestas positivas de la comunidad de Bocas, que es difícil describir el sentimiento de logro que sentimos al cruzar la meta final y al escuchar nuestro puntaje de tiempo. Es verdaderamente como cuando los Vikingos salían a mar abierto y traían los tesoros de vuelta a casa (¡medallas de oro!) a sus amigos y familiares. ¿Cómo entrenaron para este evento de tanta exigencia física? "Entrenamos 6 días a la semana en diferentes aspectos, cada mañana a las 8 nos pueden encontrar en el Bocas Fight Gym en donde trabajamos nuestra fuerza y condicionamiento. Nos ponemos como objetivo el remar de 5 a 6 veces en la semana en el mar abierto alrededor

Tenemos un entrenamiento de recuperación por lo menos una vez a la semana, nos encanta ir al Bocas Yoga a seguir la clase de Laura Kay así que realmente estiramos nuestros músculos para evitar que se nos pongan tensos." ¿Cómo influye la "Vida Bocatoreña" su estilo de vida en la preparación para estas carreras?
Nosotros amamos el agua, el océano, todas surfeamos y Julie hasta vive en un velero. Todas estamos al tanto de cómo vivimos y tenemos compasión hacia el planeta, los animales y todo lo que nos rodea. Queremos más que cualquiera cosa ayudar a otros para que sean más activos y a que hagan decisiones más responsables y saludables en sus opciones de comida diaria y el uso e impacto de sus alrededores (especialmente cuando se trata del océano). Esther es una guerrera del bienestar por su propia cuenta y come principalmente comidas sin procesar y es 95 % vegana, además de casi nunca bebe alcohol. Romaine tiene una dieta similar ya que es vegetariana. Angie y Julie si comen pescado y pollo, pero en realidad eligen sus comidas de una manera muy sana durante toda la temporada. BOCAS BEACH CLUB Walk on the Stylish Side Head over to Carenero Island nowadays and there is a whole heap of new style and comfort where the Pickled Parrot used to be. Combine the stunning 270 degree view of Bastimentos, Solarte and Isla Colon with a luxury hotel suite outdoors and the Bocas Beach Club is what you get. “We're hoping to bring a new level of service to Bocas. We meet and greet every boat that arrives. We have a VIP section that caters on an all-inclusive basis, so it comes with massages, all you can eat and drink and your own private suite,” explains owner Dyllan Mitchell. Although there are premium all-inclusive packages geared towards honeymooners and high-end clients, there is something for everybody at the new Bocas Beach Club: “It's the difference between economy, business and first class sections on an aircraft. Economy is around the bar, on the stairs and in the hammocks, the ocean pods are business class and the VIP suite is first class.” The ocean pods are $100 per day, per couple and includes your own private pod as well as all you can eat and drink off their standard menu. The VIP suite is similar but $200 and with your own VIP suite, with a private deck and own ladders into the ocean and private areas for massages and top shelf cocktails and lobster. The VIP suite is designed for those who want to be absolutely pampered all day. The Beach Club is for all lovers of the sun and the ocean. Newly added stairs that lead directly in the ocean, where guests can sit right on the stairs in the ocean, enjoying cocktails, soaking up the sun and jumping off the recently restored wooden sun deck. Hammocks are abundant and each of the special ocean pods comes with a USB charger for the modern electronic luxuries most of us cannot seem to live without. Bocas Beach Club is open everyday 11am to 7pm and there are complementary boats to and fro, every hour, on the hour (11am to 6pm) launching from the back dock of the Bocas Paradise Hotel (1st street, Isla Colon) and leaving 15 minutes before the hour, every hour from Bocas Beach Club in Carenero returning to Isla Colon to the Bocas Paradise Hotel. Delicious barbecues are served every Saturday and the kitchen is open everyday with an emphasis on sourcing only the highest quality of ingredients. Dyllan and his staff are actively building relationships with farmers and suppliers who are avoiding GMOs and pharmaceuticals. Bahia Honda has blossomed into the leading educational nonprofit organization of Bocas del Toro serving eight communities on five of the islands. Now in its sixth year of operation, Give & Surf continues to grow and expand its programs, projects, and services and 2017 is already looking like it’ll be the best year yet! In 2016, Give & Surf constructed a two classroom expansion complete with solar powered electricity at the Boca del Drago school, built a teacher’s house in Solarte, and added a children’s playground & water system to the Bahia Roja community. They also opened the Old Bank Community Center which has an infocenter run by the local government that is open seven days per week and has extracurricular activities for children provided by local and international volunteers. Furthermore, the higher education scholarship program expanded awarding over 40 students with scholarships to attend high school and university, and the English as a Second Language classes and other extracurricular programs exponentially grew thanks to more volunteers and partnerships with local businesses. All of this was above and beyond the “normal” operations of the year-round preschool & kindergarten “Escuelita” in Bahia Roja and Bahia Honda which were the flagship programs started in 2011. While one might think eventually things will slow down, exactly the opposite is happening. One door after another continues to open as more people both locally and internationally get involved and understand the impact Give & Surf has and the needs of the local communities. As a tourist or even local living in town, it’s easy to forget that there are impoverished communities throughout the archipelago without electricity and running water and limited access to education and medical care. “The keys in making decisions on what projects and programs to take on are ensuring that they are community driven and sustainable,” says Give & Surf president & founder, Neil Christiansen. “The last thing we want to do is give something to a community that they don’t need or want or that’s going to stop a year from now because it’s not sustainable.” More volunteers, international organizations, local businesses, and government

agencies are partnering with Give & Surf which helps to sustainably facilitate the expansion of educational programs and projects. So what will 2017 bring? “Who knows?” asks Neil, partially joking, “We have all these amazing plans already but recently we’ve been blown away by new things popping up throughout the year. It’s certainly taught us to dream big. We went from serving a couple of dozen students to hundreds now so it just seems logical that we’ll continue to keep growing until we ensure that all Bocas’ students have access to education from preschool through university.” Thus far in 2017, Give & Surf has already broken ground on a new community center & computer lab in San Cristobal and is also slated to add a school addition to the Cristobal school in March. The new summer camp and afterschool program in Old Bank launched in January and the extracurricular class offerings continues to expand as more teachers & instructors volunteer their time to give back to the local communities. They’ve also received funding to support the installation of solar panels and purchase of laptops for several schools and community centers.

Despite its growth, Give & Surf remains a small nonprofit that operates solely in Bocas del Toro that is driven by volunteers and the generosity of its donors. “Every dollar makes a difference,” states Christiansen. “We don’t have one sole funder that supports us. We rely on every donation and every volunteer to make what we do possible.

Mother ocean. Many come here to enjoy her fun waves, to cool off and snorkel around and admire her natural beauty, but unfortunately and most importantly: she is to be feared and respected. Not every beach around the island is always calm enough for casual swimming; especially this time of year. It is extremely important to take notice and proper precaution before assuming it is safe to swim on these beaches; and it's also very necessary to know what to do if you or someone around you is caught in a dangerous rip current. Fortunately, members of the community are very concerned and quite proactive, so measures are being taken to make sure that everyone is well-informed.

Before 2010, an average of 5 people in Bocas drowned every year as a result of the treacherous rip tide currents. Led by US Embassy Warden Larry Shane, sponsored by 52 Bocas residents and businesses, 41 vinyl signs were installed on all the windward beaches on Isla Colon and Bastimentos, along with over 100 posters all over town. Signs were updated in 2015 and in a Bocas Breeze article “Signs of Life- Renewed Rip Tide Warning Signs”, Larry was proud to report “In the first 5 years of the signs, not one person was drowned by a Bocas riptide.” Sadly, 4 have drowned in the past 2 years. Vigilance is vital. The signs (pictured here) have been very helpful indeed but even more helpful are the strong swimmers and helpful surfers who are aware and informed about what to do in the event someone needs help. Tony of Panama Dive School put out the message via Facebook one day that if at least $250 were pledged towards the educational efforts of Give & Surf, that he would shave his long blonde locks shaved and do so for all to see. Well, after overwhelming support and donations matched and doubled and matched and doubled: Tony's hair cut helped Give & Surf reach their goal, of which they had been $1,000 short. What a fun and helpful initiative, Tony!
Government, businesses and residents have been fundraising, organizing and sweating together to provide Bocas will 100 new trash recepticles. The bins are sponsored by local businesses, sustained by government trash collection and actually manufactued by the volunteers of Unidos por Bocas in their own time.
