AGENT ORANGE LAND

CULTURAL & RECOVERY CENTER

-2O22Final Thesis

This thesis aims to explore an effective solution to reclaim and recover Agent Orange’ land in Vietnam, reduce the chemical impact to local people and activities. Also, recovery to reproduce on the toxic land and transform the site into a cultural cen ter that serves communities surrounding neighborhoods. R

MARKETPLACE

The Marketplace is located in the area of MOMA where is available promising conditions such as mild temperature and comfortable winds. The idea is to provide maximum direct daylight through the angled panels on the roof which are oriented parallel with axis West-East. For light, the roof planes are angled to create direct light conditions on one side. This provides a good quality of light for the facility in order to save artificial energy, especially passive heating to become a sustainable building. The project is also integrated with frequency winds that come from North-West. This modulated condition is generating the air quality; the natural ventilation system is operated by winds flowing through the bamboo structure on the façade to cool the building. The intention to create a pattern that gathers the winds that frequency comes from the N-W direction. This pattern creates a shading to make a unique experience for users.

The roof trusses are pitched to direct light enter to space through the glass on the angled panels and onto the marketplace area. Space trusses on the ceiling are creating a space, which allows more light. Specifically, this empty condition is an advantage for running the mechanical heating and cooling such as the AHU system and boiler with ductwork. The marker is oriented on the maximum sunlight and easy to expose wind direction. This orientation is creating two open spaces for the neighborhood, and these spaces make a sense of freedom for the facility itself.

NATIONAL MUSEUM ANNEX

This project is a new extension of the existing museum in Helsinki Finland. The first idea is to create a cloud above the museum. Besides, the idea is also to connecting to existing museum and making unique experiences for users, especially to helpvisitors easy to interact between the existing museum and the new expanding by using the main courtyard. The cloud might help to protect from snow and rain for the old museum that is iconic for the whole city. The advantage of the content isn’t high, so the new extension is lifted without touching to have a view around the city. During reaching the site, the building is created with a rectangular shape and parallel with the main street. In the middle of the shape, there are three different opening areas that are connected with the courtyard and tower bell. With escalator in the courtyard, users are easy to get in the new expanding after visiting the first floor.

The structure of the museum is a giant truss to make the construction is stable. Besides, there are four main cores that are set up with a purpose around the existing museum, especially, those cores are also a 2nd circulation of the newly expanding. While users get into the new extension they will feel the transforming between the old style of the museum and the new. Besides, visitors also are able to see the huge park from the auditorium and the city for coffee area. In conclusion, the flooding building will make a unique experience for visitors such as walking on the cloud while seeing the history of Helsinki Finland.

This project imagines architecture as a” filter” of the urban condition. Specifically, different inputs are controlled through a series of triangular planes. The modulated conditions include: light, privacy, heat, sound and views. For light, the planes are angled to create a diffuse light condition on one side, with direct light conditions possible on the opposite side. This provides painters with choices in terms of light conditions; diffuse light for working and direct light for variation.

The thickened concrete planes are also oriented in a shingled manner to block the sound from the highway. At the same time, they also function as thermal mass, collecting heat throughout the day and releasing it at night in a tactile manner. The orientation in plan also controls privacy, allowing intermittent views into interior spaces while maintaining a strong sense of seclusion. The shingled planes also create unique view corridors for artists to see out as they work.

Artists also have several choices for work spaces, from individual private studios to shared open areas. The school is divided into two main areas. Towards the overpass, the spaces are more private while more public spaces are set up on the north side that is adjacent to the existing restaurant. As such, there are tTwo entries: one on the back where there are several walls and trees to reduce noise from the highway and overpass; the entrance from the street, via the sidewalk, passes through the pleated structures. Together, these filters give artists a unique yet controlled experience for the creation of art.
