The method most often employed to accomplish this is to require drainage swales around the house, typically following the side lot lines and requiring the removal of any object in the path of the swale, trees included. For adjacent lots, this results in twice as much land being disturbed to accommodate surface drainage along side-lot lines. Some filling of the rear portion of the lot to ensure the movement of this surface water is also normally required.
