WELCOME

editor bliss

Hello readers!

reviewer

Welcome to the first ever edition of Diaspora magazine. A magazine fully dedicated to the Tamil independent entertainment scene.

navinn rajendran

layout

Before going further, let me tell you how it all began. Trootz first started in 2014 as Thamizh Roots by 2 guys. Back then, it was only a smalltime blog documenting the works of Malaysian Tamil artists. Nonetheless, Trootz slowly became the go-to site for honest reviews on Tamil talents. With the growth of the Tamil entertainment scene in other parts of the world, Trootz tried to be more inclusive. This resulted in a growing fanbase. Understanding this, we decided launch a monthly digital magazine which is Diaspora. The goal is to create our own thriving entertainment scene. Bigger than our digital magazine is our unity. Diaspora is a cumulative effort of several online medias. Since this being our first edition, we have kept our contents to the point. We are also looking for people to join us. If you are passionate about the Tamil entertainment scene, call us or email us! We would love to work or collaborate with you.

ALAMANDRA QUEST INTRODUCING

Malaysia’s top Tamil rap artist, Rabbit.mac has announced that he will releasing his third compilation album this Deepavali. The well-travelled rapper wo has been busy working in the South Indian cinema industry revealed that the album will be his third and probably the biggest compilation album to date.

M.I.A WORLD RECYCLE WEEK Photo Credit | yahoo.com

Photo Credit | Alamendra Quest Facebook Alamandra Quest has been making waves recently. Known for their trendy flavour, they have not only been a brand to look out for but also been dropping projects back to back. Their recent release, Anbe Anbe by Shobana Baranitharan was well received by local listeners. Having led by Ram, Alamandra Quest records live recording and gives importance to quality and clarity. They regard themselves more as a family than just a musical group, always ready to give opportunity for talents. They are always looking out for new talents to provide opportunity either in singing, dancing, acting or modelling. 2016 is indeed a year of exploration and yes, their recent song Marubadiyam is definitely worth listening.

World Recycle Week is happening soon (April 18-24) and clothing brand H&M has teamed up with the bold and outof-the-box Maya Arulpragasam, or better known as M.I.A for their upcoming awareness campaign. The initiative aims to encourage shoppers to recycle unwanted clothing items at H&M stores in exchange for store credit. Titled Rewear It, the video possesses a hypnotic vibe to it, sees M.I.A rocking the cityscape around piles of fabric. The message is clear and straight-forward. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to collect 1 000 tons of used clothes from H&M shoppers. M.I.A, a social-conscious music artist, certainly hits the right spot with this track with its mantra-like rhymes and cool music video. w w w. m y t r o o t z . c o m | J U N E 2 0 1 6

ROSHAN JAMROCK #KABALISWAG

Malaysia’s Roshan Jamrock is all set for his Kollywood debut through Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest movie Kabali. The teaser, released a month ago, has already smashed records in the Indian film industry for garnering the most amount of views within 24 hours - recording a staggering 5 million views. Roshan Jamrock is no stranger in the independent Malaysian music industry. Having popularized the crunk genre in the independent Malaysian hip hop scene through his rap group - K Town Clan, Roshan Jamrock has bagged several accolades over the years - both as a rap artist and a producer. The Kajang-born rap artist will be lending his rap vocals in two tracks for Kabali - Ulagam Oruvanukka and Veera Thurandhara, in which he will be sharing the mic’ with the likes of Gaana Bala and Santosh Narayanan, the film’s music composer. Along Santosh Narayanan’s unorthodox musical style and Roshan’s distinguished rap vocals, we only can expect real bangers from this collaboration!

ADK & SRI RASCOL SHOWKALI Sri Lankan pioneering rap artist ADK and Malaysia’s current rap sensation Sri Rascol are conquering Kollywood with their Showkali, an upbeat rap number from Simbhu’s latest film AYM. The rap duo are being hailed for their rap prowess and creativity. Working with Oscar award-winning music composer, AR Rahman, the music maestro brought out the best from both of the rappers. Sri Rascol ‘murdered’ the track with his speed, some even dubbing him as the fastest rapper in Tamil. ADK needs no introduction as he has been working closely with AR Rahman for a few years now and always delivers without fail. Showkali is definitely the rap number ardent Tamil rap listeners have been waiting for.

BALAN KASHMIR HOLA AMIGO Balan Kashmir is getting a lot of attention recently for his recent work with Chennai youth icon Anirudh Ravichander for Hola Amigo, an upbeat lazy rap-inspired track from the Kollywood film Rum. Kollywood is a competitive entertainment industry and whenever an independent act makes a breakthrough, it’s always a success. While it is nice seeing this Klang-born rap artist making waves, Balan Kashmir is probably one of the most hardworking and well-grounded rapper in the game for a long time now.

SWITCH LOCK UP MY INDIAN GIRLS MALAYSIA

Beautiful Indian girls, a fun-filled atmosphere and homeboys - that sums up My Indian Girls, Switch Lock Up’s latest music video. Collaborating alongside Click KL Agency, the music video has been creating a buzz on social media. The catchy beat and the bilingual verses makes this song hard to ignore. After the success of Savadi and now My Indian Girls, Switch is certainly hitting all the right notes.

TEEJAY VAANAVIL UNITED KINGDOM

Teejay’s latest release Vaanavil is a melodious piece which sees the UK-based Tamil singersongwriter at his best. Teejay has gone from strength to strength and Vaanavil is an evidence of it. Teejay is probably one of the best talents to emerge in 2016.

SAIBRUNTHA SUBRAMANIAM

Mounangalaal Ethai Solla

TS PROD UN SIRIPIL FRANCE

CANADA

Sticking to their trademark melodious style, TS Prod has once again delivered with their minimalist musical flow, with Thars, Vassan and Meera B on the vocals. Meera B’s part is both catchy and interesting and a major plus point is the music video. Directed by Mohane Dessan, the picturesque scenery complements the flowing music. Un Siripil is a peaceful song which you can enjoy during long drives.

The independent Tamil music scene in Canada is booming and Mounangalaal Ethai Solla is a testament to that. With Nicky. M’s melodious composition, alongside the harmonious vocals of Saibruntha Subramaniam and Gobiraj Sivalingam, we are certainly digging the music, which is both fresh and heartwarming. The music video is a credible attempt from the team, making a modest yet crafty music videos. Gajaparan Soma, the director, as well as the cinematographer and editor, executed the music video to his best ability.

MUGEN RAO KAYALVIZHI MALAYSIA

Mugen Rao’s Kayalvizhi is probably your typical love song but Mugen Rao certainly impresses with his latest song. Composed by Coruz Hooks and Mugen Rao penning the lyrics, Kayalvizhi has crossed more than 100,000+ hits on YouTube since its release in April 2016. Overall, a decent attempt from Mugen Rao.

ADK MUN SELLADAA

SRI LANKA & SWITZERLAND FOR THE MOVIE MANITHAN

ADK is definitely pushing his rap boundaries in Mun Selladaa alongside India’s youth music icon Anirudh Ravichander. Music by the eminent Santosh Narayanan, Mun Selladaa is a song from the upcoming Tamil flick Manithan. The Sri Lankan Tamil rap artist has been working hard on his craft and this is evident here as he drops each line emotively. Santosh Narayanan’s musical prowess gives a determined vibe to this track alongside ADK’s punchy verses.

KIDDO LEGACY USURE NARAMBULEY MALAYSIA VIDEO COVER

SE BOYZ SANDAKAARI CANADA

Kiddo Legacy’s Usure Narambuley music video cover is infectious. The focus of the video is definitely the female cast. She was beautifully projected. Her emotions are very expressive. And definitely no one could have pulled it better then herself. Slow motion scenes require a lot of effort from the talents. It requires depth and understanding of the song, needless to say the talents in this music video pulled it off to near perfection. Props to Kiddo Legacy for projecting women with full of love and heartfelt emotions. Ramah Vashinie beautifully relived the song.

SE Boyz continues to impress with their latest music, Sandakaari, released early April. A rhythm and blues track, SE Boyz worked with long-time associate Jegan TJP for this RnB track. We are also happy to see fellow SE Boyz member, Thibz, drops a couple of verses in Sandakaari, which also somewhat complements Thusy’s bluesy vocals. Thinesh who often raps in English for their tracks, takes a step back in Sandakaari, as he utilizes his vocals for a more singing role. We are digging the melodious vibes and how all of their vocals work in unison. Unlike their previous release, the playful song C.Murugan, Sandakaari is a straightforward love track and the Canadian boys definitely hit the right spot with this melodious wonder.

KLANGKAI SOFIA MALAYSIA

Klangkai has unveiled his debut music video – Sofia with Candy Factory Studios producing manning the video department. Candyman, who works closely with PU4LYF Entertainment, directed and edited the video, as well as providing his cinematographic skills. The visuals in the music video complements the gaana-themed song, probably one of the best music videos currently in the Tamil independent music scene. The playful nature and the bright colours add vibrance to the video. The video starts off with a sort-of a futuristic Terminator entry, who is in search of a missing vadai. Candyman has executed a terrific job in this portion, in terms of the sound and movement editing. Vihara Dancers look pleasant in front of the camera and their efforts are commendable.

Candyman continues to push the bar higher when it comes to music video making.

Malaysian Simran and Sheezay also make an appearance in the video, to add comic effect. Also making an appearance in the music video is Lock Up Nathan, who portrays Rabbit. mac. Most likely a gimmick attempt, but judging from the YouTube comments, many are missing Rabbit.mac’s video appearance. Overall, Candyman continues to push the bar higher when it comes to music video making. Sofia is probably the best work from him to date and the team behind it has done a commendable job. We do hope the music video gets television air play as we need more playful and creative such as Sofia on air, instead of routine and generic music video.

BIG VITZ WELCOME TO MY PETTA INDIA

Big Vitz’s latest release Welcome to My Petta/Hood set the Tamil independent scene on blaze through its bi-lingual punchy verses. Big Vitz starts the track by paying homage to A.R. Rahman’s Pettai Rap from the Kollywood film Kadhalan. Having much love for his city, Big Vitz reps every town in a fashionable manner. The 4.37 minutes music video attempts to capture Chennai as it is. The song has garnered a lot of attention and even A.R Rahman shared the song on his social media accounts. Mixed reviews from the public suggests Big Vitz is getting the conversation going when it comes to Tamil hip hop. While some did not seem to like the song, many have stated that Welcome To My Petta/Hood is a song which gives Chennai the respect it deserves. Big Vitz is a man on a mission. He has been hinting on his next release which is all about Madras. The Tamil rapper is definitely putting Chennai on the map of Tamil hip hop.

SWISS RHYTHMS MAAYAI SWITZERLAND

A group of Swiss Tamils got together and formed a band called Swiss Rhythm’s. The result – probably the best thing to emerge in the Tamil independent music circuit. Consisting of Pragash Segaram (Bass), Savio (Guitar), Praveen Sarangan (Keyboard), Surya Segaram (Keyboard), Biraveen Jeyandran (Tabla), Surenthan Rasaratnam (Electric Pad), Mis Ter Jey (Electric Pad), Sajeen Varatharajah (Drums) and Chris (Saxophon), their first ever song, titled Maayai is extremely astounding. Sung by the reality show contestant Super Singer, S. Nerujan and upcoming singer, Stefeja V, both of them have certainly done justice to the music. Nerujan hits all the right notes at Maayai. Popular European Tamil lyricist and comedian, Dayan Shan is also involved in this project through his lyrics and also video direction. The photogenic CJ is one of the cast in the music video, alongside Mathura and Prins. While there are many music products being released by European Tamils, Mayaavi is so far one of the best collaborations to emerge from these young talents – both visually and aurally. We have to congratulate the cinematographer, Surenth and also John Varnan for the colour grading. The video complements the eclectic music. Props to the music team for combining elements of the east and west, it’s amazing to see how tabla and flashes of dubstep just brings Maayai to life. The award-winning Kausikan Sivalingam is also involved in this project through his impeccable mixing and mastery. Can we say this is an all-star team working on Maayai? We have Nerujan, Dayan, Kausikan, CJ – all amazing talents in their respective field. A lot of positive comments have been pouring in. Some are comparing Mathura, the lead female actor, to Amy Jackson, while some are saying this is the best song of 2015. As for us, we are amazed how so many diverse talents were able to come together and work on this song. It must have taken ages to craft this song – certainly props to the entire team. We hope Maayai will be the breakthrough for all of these talents. Swiss Rhythms are bound to go places if they are able to keep this momentum and build on the runaway success of Maayai.

Who are your gurus in boxing and real life? My gurus in boxing are my coaches - Mr Fitri an Mr Faizal. At first, I was the only girl in the boxing training camp. Nonetheless, they took care me under their wings and tauget me a lot techniques. In real life, I would say my inspirational gurus are the great boxers - Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquio and Mike Tyson. Before I enter the ring to fight, I usually watch their videos on YouTube to get pumped up. I look at them as my heroes.

What do you feel like telling to young Indian talents out there? I wish to tell to all the young Indian talents out there to chase for their dreams and achieve it. We must show to others that we are good and capable. As for the girls, we need to be brave in every situation and they need to learn some form of martial arts to protect themselves. I wish my achievement as a female Indian boxer will inspire other girls out there to pick up a sport and excel.

JAGAT HEADS TO NEW YORK

ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL

Jagat centers on the life of Appoi, a 11year old who is trying to find his feet in society. Unable to relate to his strict father and a failing education system, things get from bad to worse for Appoi when he gets in trouble in school. First, a fight breaks out involving Appoi and then, he pranks his teacher in a comical fashion. Failing to find his grip in school, a need for respect emerges, this is where Appoi seeks for a strong figure to support him. This happens through the form of his uncle and his goons, who by now have gained street cred.

Jagat, the longest running Malaysian Tamil film on cinema, directed by Shanjhey Kumar Perumal has been selected to be screened at the 15th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) to be held from 22 June to 9 July 2016. This is Jagat’s first premier in the North America region and this is also the first time a Malaysian Tamil feature film has been selected for a premier outside Asia. The 91-minute crime drama provides an insight to the lives of the minority Indian community, stuck in between transition. The Malaysian film has garnered a lot of appreciation for its story content and direction. Depicting the reality of working class Indians in the estate, Shanjhey Kumar Perumal subtlety narrates the struggles they face on a daily basis.

Shanjhey Kumar Perumal is definitely a director worth looking out for. Armed with a confident vision, Jagat brilliantly reveals the story of the marginalized Indians in the estate. Shanjhey did not tell a story through Jagat, he revealed the stories of the individuals.

An education system that fails to appreciate creativity, a strict father who wants his son to realize his dreams, a gangster who wants to make a name for himself – Jagat is a gripping tale on social realism.

DIASPORA

First-time director Shanjhey Kumar Perumal channels the spirit of Satyajit Ray in this coming-of-age story about a boy growing up in a community of Tamil immigrants in Malaysia during the 1990s. The film introduces us to Appoy (magnificently played by Harvind Raj), a spirited kid who would rather watch gangster flicks and make prank calls than memorize his multiplication tables. Desperately trying to keep his son on the straight path, Appoy’s hard-working father becomes increasingly abusive, as the boy is inexorably drawn to the criminal lifestyle of his uncle, a henchman for a local Malaysian gang. Like the best debut features (think Pickpocket or As Tears Go By), Jagat has the tang and intensity of personal experience, is saturated with style and charm, and is a little rough around the edges. But those rough edges only heighten the panache and impact of the film, which signals the arrival of a major cinematic talent.

Geethayin Radhai is the next Malaysian Tamil film scheduled to be released this 22 September 2016. The film also stars director Shalini Balasundaram and promising actor G Crak, who made his acting debut through the award-winning shortfilm Kickstart. The leading pair are already creating a wave in social media through their on-screen chemistry as portrayed in the trailers. The film centers around relationship and romance, which is said to be executed in a playful and colourful manner.

Geethayin Radhai The trailer which caught everyone’s attention. Karthik Shamalan’s En Veettu Thottathil is a Tamil slasher thriller film which sees Jaya Ganason donning an important role. Judging from the trailer, we are up for a good Tamil horror film which our industry desperately needs. In the previous years, many horror films have failed due to its poor storyline and fake acting, but EVT is at a different level. From the trailer, Jaya will definitely shine in her role. Not much has been revealed about the film, but the expectations are high for EVT!

Can you tell us the beginning of Click Models/ Agency? Click Models/ Agency started in January 2015 when our company got the contract to source out usherettes & female volunteers for an event in Sunway. After the event, most of the girls kept in touch with the management and scored more corporate jobs for events, conventions and concerts. That’s when we decided to start a company that could manage these talents. We branched out into Click Agency, which we are currently concentrating and working on fully. How has the modelling landscape changed since you started? We’re working on a fashion convention to be scheduled in late 2016 / early 2017. It wont be designed to change the landscape but totally to introduce new faces on a grand runway. As an agency, we havent touched any base to change it but by being involved with other fashion events and designers helps to understand the culture and business further. How did you get the name Click? Click is more like CLIQUE, a family, brotherhood, team, squad thing. w w w. m y t r o o t z . c o m | J U N E 2 0 1 6

Clicks Models/Agency has been branching out to event management and music. How has that been going? The division is headed by my husband, Vikna Raj. We have successfully worked with partners behind both the Anirudh concert in 2015 and 2016, kickstarted Switch LockUp’s debut album, talent managed Balan Kashmir for Hola Anigo from the movie Rum and Hardee Bee for Nee Kathalan from Siva Karthikeyan’s Remo to work with Anirudh. We are also currently working on Click Studio, setting up a dj school and a music academy. In the midst of all this, we’re preparing for Balan Kashmir’s release in late 2016. Click Models/Agency is doing much in the music front. How do you see yourselves? At Click, what we try to do is to pave way for our talented Malaysian musicians to Kollywood. We have successfully debuted Balan Kashmir through Anirudh and Switch through Mervin-Solomon. Our next talent we are introducing is Hardee Bee through Siva Karthikeyan’s Remo. There is a good amount of musicans coming through and we will reveal when the time comes.

Who was your first girl that you signed and how has Clicks grown? We got a pool of talents but we haven’t had the confidence in signing one specific girl under a contract. This is because the industry is unstable here to promise a full length career in fashion and modelling. Most girls slow their career after 25,26. As a talent agency, what do you look for when you spot a girl? What catches your eye or gives you that “ah-ha” moment? Confidence, character, knowledge, manners and then we judge the looks. No point just having the looks right? What makes Click Models/Agency different from any other agencies? Click started as a family-friends thing. Everybody had an interest where the company would branch out with each other’s skills. Now, Click has evolved into a studio, a dj school, a talent agency, production agency and event organizers. Nonetheless, the core idea is to kick start a model school in two years is still very much intact. So much has been planned, executed and delivered as promised to clients and investors. At Click, it’s more like the talents get inducted and that’s what matters. What is the future of that you envision for Click? A home for talents where they’re directed with right attitude, right management and tuned into the right attitude for success. It’s more like a boot camp for stubborn ones but second home for the passionate.

experience with Anirudh

Recently, your company had the opportunity to organize Anirudh’s Live in Concert tour - can you tell us your role and your experience handling such a massive concert? The Anirudh showcase was purely a team effort. There were 8 main key players and I handled the phone/online ticketing dept. Every day I went through reports and had to organize the distribution and delivery schedule with the staffs and volunteers. I had to juggle between my duties as a mom and work but somehow I managed. We live in a condo and my office is few floors below my unit hence making it easier for me to multitask. Big thanks to my husband (Vikna Raj) and Balan Kashmir. Wouldn’t have done it without them. We work closely as a team. The concert was a stepping stones to bigger concerts in the pipe line.Too early to mention but we’ll surely keep you guys in loop.

How would you describe Anirudh personally in 10 words? eclectic. talented. champion. humble. funny. workaholic. loyal. charming. friendly. always wanting the best for his friends and loved ones- That’s Anirudh. It is known that Anirudh is close to your son, Akshay. Is your son influenced by Anirudh’s musical talent by any chance? Akshay has always been around music since Vikna Raj and Balan Kashmir started Click Studio. We bought him a piano at home and he is learning fast. I don’t know whether he was influenced by Anirudh but Akshay surely looks up to him. He enjoys the music with us and sings along as well. Music changes kids and helps with their growing up, so we’re really looking forward to see how Akshay takes up this experience.

Working with international automobile company, Brabus in partnership with Naza World, Candyman showed his visual prowess in the commercial. The young filmmaker who dabbles in both corporate commercial and music videos brought the monster alive by depicting its power. Drawing elements from the nature with a desert setting, the G700 looks menacing yet a subtle touch of sophistication and modernity is highlighted. The 1.58 minutes ad which was released a fortnight ago has already crossed over 6000+ hits and counting. The guy behind hit music videos such as Rockaboy, Kandang Leh Kozhi and Sofia is without a doubt carving a name for himself.
