-19 Facilities Manager Ken Wettlaufer washes down the floor in the Tavistock arena after the ice was removed

Oxford County Paramedic Services ready to respond Oxford County Paramedic Services is part of the greater healthcare team working on the COVID-19 front-lines in Oxford. Although it is a busy and stressful time for everyone, our paramedics are well-trained and ready to respond to emergencies and the outbreak. Paramedic Services is reminding people through social media to: • Self-isolate if sick and call Teleheath Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 for advice, or Southwestern Public Health if you think you have COVID-19 • Call 9-1-1 if symptoms become severe, for instance, if you are having trouble breathing • Not to call 9-1-1 if your situation is not an emergency: check Ontario’s online screening tool instead at https://covid-19. ontario.ca/self-assessment/#q0

TOWNSHIP SHUTS DOWN RECREATIONAL FACILITIES On March 17th, 2020, in an effort to help prevent or lessen the impact of the community spread of the Coronavirus (COVID 19), the Township of East Zorra-Tavistock decided to close all municipal indoor recreational facilities until further notice. This included the Tavistock Arena, Queen’s Park Pavilion, Tavistock Memorial Hall and the Innerkip Community Centre. At the Tavistock and District Recreation Centre and Memorial Hall, Facilities Manager Ken Wettlaufer stated that their last complete booking was the weekend of March 14 and 15. This year, the ice was scheduled to be taken out on May 7th. However, due to the provincial mandate of physical distancing, the ice surface was removed over the week of March 17th to 21st. “We did a slightly different process this year,” Ken said. With the closing of the facility all staff was laid off including two full-time facility operators, two part-time operators, and five part-time students as support staff. Based on last year’s booking schedule, taking into

account the two months from the start of the COVID-19 restrictions, the Facilities Board has lost approximately $65,000 in revenue. “We have currently cancelled all booking up until the middle of May,” Ken said. “We will be monitoring the COVID-19 guidelines and consulting with South Western Public Health to see how this pandemic unfolds. At this point we anticipate the strong possibility of more cancellations,” he added. On March 23rd, the Township deemed that all playground areas were off limits to the public, however the parks would remain open. The Municipal office in Hickson will remain open during this time of selfisolation and social distancing and they strongly encourage all residents to go to the Township website at ezt.ca to access online services and contact information for each department. “If you are outside it is essential that everyone practice social distancing … walks are to exercise, not socialize,” the Township news release concluded.

Callers to 9-1-1 will undergo a prescreening over the phone to check for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. When they arrive at a call, paramedics will be wearing the right personal protective equipment for the call and will perform a secondary screening with the patient. Oxford County Paramedics are taking all precautionary measures to protect the public and themselves during the COVID-19 outbreak.
