Nativity sheep trail

G

race United Church’s annual Journey to the Stable celebration is taking on a different twist this year. A flock of knitted sheep have been made by ladies at the church and will be placed in local businesses to create a Nativity Sheep Trail throughout the village with the hope of building excitement and creating awareness of the Advent season. Twenty-two participating stores and offices will each host their own stuffed sheep and give it a unique name. “As we anticipate the birth of the baby Jesus, we look forward to the celebration of Christmas,” said Rev. Mary Stewart. Beginning Monday, December 2, a “Sheep Trail” pamphlet to show where each sheep is located, will be made available through the local churches and at the participating businesses. Children and adults will be invited to pick up one of the pamphlets and wander through the downtown sometime during the month of December, going into each participating business and learning the name of each sheep. A completed “sheep trail list” can be dropped off at identified locations, and after Christmas, there will be a draw to award prizes to some of those children and adults participating. Twenty-two large sheep have been knitted for this event. “Each

The pamphlet will also include a brief narration of the Christmas Story as well as an outlined picture of the Nativity that can be coloured by the children. The Journey to the Stable will culminate in the staging of the Nativity Story on Christmas Eve beginning at 7:00 pm, and will take place at the new pavilion in Queen’s Park. More information

will be made available closer to the date. “We believe this event will help the community to anticipate the celebration of Christmas, and also offer an opportunity for folks to be reminded of the Christmas story,” said Rev. Mary Stewart. The idea for the “Sheep Trail” came from the "Messy Church Nativity" book. Knitting the sheep was the first project for a newly-formed craft group, called “Sit and Knit, Stay and Crochet"

at Grace United Church. The knitting group meets every other Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. in Knox Parlour at the church. Ladies in the community are welcome to join the group. The next session is November 27th. The group also plans to make afghans, prayer shawls, comfort quilts as well as prayer squares that Mary Lou Ross will be taking on her mission trip to Nicaragua in early 2014.
