elcome back to the 2020-21 school year. This welcome-back message is unlike any other, given the unprecedented times we find ourselves navigating. LCUSD opened on Monday, Aug. 17, welcoming back 4,058 students. But, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers and students met for the first time in the virtual classroom instead of on campus at LCE, PCR, PCY, or LCHS 7-12. Despite the challenges, students, teachers, staff and parents were excited to come together and begin the new school year. Throughout the summer months, the LCUSD Elementary and Secondary Reopening Committees had been meeting to determine how LCUSD schools would reopen. However, with Gov. Newsom’s announcement on July 17 requiring that school districts in counties on the monitoring list for COVID-19 open virtually, the planning work shifted to detailing

Secondary Reopening Committee continues to meet to review possible schedules for when on-campus learning is possible given improved COVID-19 conditions. In the meantime LCUSD continues to emphasize its commitment to a world-class educational experience and strong communication throughout the district with all of its stakeholders. We are preparing all of the public health protocols and requirements set forth in order to immediately respond and reopen our campuses as soon as it is safe to do so. Teachers and staff have participated in extensive professional development over the summer and gone to great lengths to prepare to deliver a quality distance instructional program. Our parents are our true educational partners in distance learning. I am so grateful to both groups for their dedication to ensuring student success. We all recognize that 202021 will present many challenges, but we will respond to them as opportunities and stand together to deliver another memorable and rewarding school year. Please join me in wishing our LCUSD students a happy, engaging and successful 2020-21 school year.

t’s hard to believe that the school year has begun. Although I’m grateful for the extra time with my kids, there is a tinge of sadness as my husband and I won’t have the tradition of walking our girls to their 3rd- and 5thgrade classrooms at Palm Crest Elementary on the first day of school. The recent months have been arduous. I was overwhelmed with the responsibility of teaching my kids while concurrently working a demanding full-time job. I remind myself that this is all temporary and that the COVID-19 pandemic will eventually end. Unfortunately, district budgetary issues remain and have been exacerbated by the economic downturn. Our La Cañada Flintridge schools are not immune from budget tightening that would lead to cutbacks of staff, services and programs. This is why we cannot lose sight of our mission at the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation, which exists to help close the

funding gap so that the LCUSD can continue to deliver excellence for our children. This is my fourth year serving on the board of the LCFEF and I continue to be amazed by how this community comes together even in the most dire of times. While driving around town putting up yard signs in June, I was overcome with gratitude for all the generous families who support our mission. Hence, I approach this school year with a positive outlook and a firm belief that the power of community will enable us to meet any challenges that lie ahead.

his school year will be one to remember. All of our PTAs and PTSAs have been hard at work all summer reimagining ways to keep us all connected and moving forward. Together we can make this year productive for our children. Though we face many uncertainties as we head into the new school year, one thing is certain: Our children will learn a whole new set of skills and problem-

solving strategies. We will look back on this year and reflect on how we confronted challenges, rose up and taught our children how to be resilient, persevere and try their best. We — our community — make our schools great and we will continue to do so. We can do this for our children and we will. Please know that as PTA Council president, I am here for anyone who has questions, needs help — or just wants to vent. I see our community as a group of people helping each other with a common goal: our children’s success. Wishing us all a 202021 school year we can all be proud of. Jamie Abrahamian

Flintridge Prep Opens School Year With Optimistic Outlook

A

drive-thru Book Day is not what the Flintridge Prep faculty and administration had hoped for, but even before Gov. Newsom announced in July that private and public schools in L.A. County would not open for hybrid learning, plans were underway to make the day special with gifts and surprises for students and their parents in addition to the usual haul of textbooks. Part of the plan includes the presence of Jim Pickett, who will greet families in his first official appearance as head of school.

“The resiliency of our students is truly remarkable. I’ve heard tremendous stories of students supporting each other through the spring and summer,” he said. “I’ve seen the creativity and academic quality of the work students did in the spring and in our online summer school. The instinct to provide mutual support, the tenacity to do the difficult work — these are signs of a healthy, strong community. To say I’m excited for the year ahead is an understatement.” In his opening letter to families, Pickett reinforced the feeling of

optimism, noting that the administration has been preparing equally for three possible schooling options since the spring. “The quality of the planning the administration has done since March is remarkable,” Pickett noted. “So much care has gone into every detail, including a new school schedule that gives order to each day. The schedule will allow faculty time for collaboration, give students downtime, and integrate time for advising and opportunities for each grade to interact. “Our faculty are creative and smart, and they know how to respond to the challenges of teaching online. But most importantly, they have exceptional hearts, so they can see each student as an individual, even when distance poses obstacles,” said Pickett. “The faculty are ready to move to a hybrid model of learning as soon as officials say we can, and we’re all looking forward to a safe return to school.” In the new school year, faculty will be teaching within the recently completed Bachmann Collaboration Building, which houses an art studio, makerspace, science lab, conference spaces and classrooms for students in all grades, and emphasizes collaborative teaching and interdisciplinary learning. Pickett, who joins Prep from Castilleja in Palo Alto, where he was head of the upper school for eight years, also praised his leadership team, including Sarah Cooper, assis-

tant head for Academic Life, and Vanessa Walker-Oakes, assistant head for Student Life, for provid-

ing him with the foundation and support he needs to lead the school. “With the help of the leadership team, I am looking forward to getting to know the community and building on the success of the school,” Pickett noted.

Golden Opportunity to Flourish at St. Francis

S

t. Francis is thrilled to welcome both new and returning Golden Knights to the 2020-21 school year. We know that this year’s return is anything but normal. Face coverings, physical distancing, limited gatherings and other current health guidelines dictated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have created a “new normal” that is quite different from what all of us have experienced in the past. So many things remain outside of our control. However, our St. Francis family is resilient, creative and adaptable. Together, we will continue to offer the high quality of education that has been our hallmark for the last 75 years. We know that our Golden Knights are up to the task of demonstrating excellent academic performance, reflecting on our Franciscan

virtues, learning Capuchin Franciscan spirituality, and building strong character, compassion and brotherhood. Truth be told, our Golden Knights inspire us by their tenacity, resilience and joyful hearts in the midst of these unprecedented challenges in their young lives. We know that their convictions, desire to succeed and stamina through adversity will help them to grow into great men. During this uncertain time, the health and safety of our students, families and employees remains our top priority. In compliance with state and local mandates, we recently announced our intent to open the school year online through 100% distance learning. Our faculty and staff members have planned and prepared for this method of instruction and

are ready to deliver an exemplary level of education to the students. Simultaneously, we continue to plan and prepare for an eventual pivot to our initial reopening plan and hybrid model of learning. St. Francis’ COVID-19 Compliance Team will determine, in collaboration with state and local health department officials, when and how we can implement our hybrid model of learning to meet the unique needs and circumstances of our school community. This school year, we look forward to celebrating the 75th anniversary of our Capuchin Franciscan approach to education. In the fall of 1946, on the site of the former Flintridge Country Club, Capuchin Franciscan friars from Ireland set out to establish a day school and junior seminary for aspi-

rants to the order. These friars persevered during a difficult time in our nation’s history as they sought to “rebuild” this space into a special place of learning, faith formation and character development for young men.

LCF Community Center Preschool Welcomes New School Year

A

fter a summer of careful planning, the LCFCC Preschool is ready to welcome its students back to school Sept. 9. Things will look different this year, with social distancing and mask requirements in effect for both students and staff, but that won’t take away from the nurturing environment the children are familiar with. After several months away, the children are excited to get back to learning, getting messy, making friends and having fun.

Keep Calm and Welcome Back to School.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Introduces Dynamic Hybrid Learning Program

A

lthough the educational landscape has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has viewed this challenge as an opportunity to refine its current best practices and develop new teaching methods. The school’s new flexible learning program allows teachers and students to switch seamlessly from on-site to online without any disruption to the class schedule. Though the future continues to be uncertain, Flintridge Sacred Heart is well prepared and confident to thrive in any scenario by

offering a hybrid learning program for students to learn on campus, off campus, synchronously and asynchronously. Since the end of the 2019-20 school year, 100% of the school’s faculty has engaged in deeper learning by partnering with OneSchoolhouse to design, build and teach courses that can easily transition to and from on-site and online. In addition, the new school schedule sets aside dedicated time to support the emotional well-being of each student. Each Wednesday, free of scheduled class time,

students will be able to dive more deeply into their own spiritual and personal journeys while developing strong relationships with classmates and mentors. Whether on campus, or learning from a distance, students will be able to participate in Masses, prayer services, retreats, clubs and co-curriculars. As this upcoming school year begins once again from a distance, Flintridge Sacred Heart’s mission of educating young women for a life of faith, integrity and truth will continue as it lives within the hearts of

each talented and dedicated teacher. Regardless of uncertain circumstances, the school will continue to provide an exceptional learning experience, empowering each student to find her voice and make positive change in the world.

ach summer, we prepare Crestview Preparatory School for the school year to come — updating the facility, planning curriculum and counting the days for our students to return. This year, we are doubling these efforts to provide a positive school experience during a very uncertain time. Our campus has been transformed inside and outside: Classrooms have been staged with workspaces physically distant to maximize space, and new structures have been constructed to extend the classroom outdoors. We have developed methods to create an immersive remote learning experience that uses technology

tools to help students feel a part of the classroom. To enhance our world language program, we have partnered with Berlitz to offer six languages in our lower elementary program: Spanish, French, Hindi, Mandarin, Farsi and Korean. We have focused our so-

Stratford School Unveils Its Plans for Fall

tratford School is excited to welcome students back for the upcoming school year with safety in mind and plans for a flexible learning environment. To date, they have established priorities aligned with the school’s mission and goals for students, created a return-to-campus plan, and are building support systems for several contingency plans. Here’s a preview of our plans for fall: and digital experiences.

STAYING TRUE TO STRATFORD’S GUIDING PRINCIPLES SAFETY The commitment to the health and safety of the school community is paramount. Stratford will abide by all state and local statutes, heed the advice of health organizations, notably the CDC, and maintain a clean and healthy environment within the schools. QUALITY ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Depending on the final state and local statutes for this school

year wherein shelter-in-place or reduced-occupancy mandates are imposed, teachers will be ready to transition to one of several teaching and learning models, among them (1) a period of distance learning or (2) a hybrid of distance and on-campus learning (necessary, for example, if classroom capacity limits are imposed).

COMMITMENT TO IMPROVEMENT School year 2020-21 teacher training will focus almost entirely on blended learning techniques — how to develop curriculum and programing with clear throughlines that seamlessly integrate traditional and modern teaching pedagogies, synchronous and asynchronous learning, in-person

ONWARD WITH OPTIMISM! As communities begin to open back up, it is important to be mindful of potential messages around

COVID-19 that may be confusing to children. Introducing proactive, age-appropriate discussions about how school might look different when they start the new school year are important topics in which to engage and develop as information evolves. This continued focus around what we do know about the virus and sharing the things that are within our control can help build confidence, and a level of comfort, in our children. As we begin to plan for this upcoming school year, we are still driven by the mission and vision that attracted us to teaching in the first place, and we are reinvigorated by the creativity and inventiveness unleashed in response to extraordinarily challenging circumstances. We will begin the school year grateful for the opportunity to teach and to learn as we move onward to an excellent future. Sequoyah School: A Community of Learners

S

equoyah School is a coeducational kindergarten-through-12th-grade independent day school in Pasadena where students thrive in an inclusive, diverse community supported by a progressive approach to learning. Offering a college preparatory curriculum in a student-centered, experiential environment, Sequoyah is a school where students are appreciated for their individuality of thought, experience and expression. Attending school in a nurturing, supportive learning environment helps students develop self-confidence and a love of learning. Kindergarten through 8th grade at Sequoyah begin with peer groupings in mixed-age classrooms that

span two years. Each year, new groupings create opportunities for second-year students to learn leadership and incoming students to experience the challenge and excitement of working with older children. This creates lasting relationships across grade levels and fosters academic and personal growth in students as they enter their junior high school years in 7th and 8th grades. At the high school, teachers challenge students to see and make connections, communicate ideas, develop meaningful relationships and become change makers who know how to inspire collaboration and lead innovation. As adolescents, Sequoyah high school students develop initiative and self-direction through college preparatory coursework

that integrates outdoor education and experiential learning through two dynamic four-year programs: Field Studies and Social Innovation Program. At Sequoyah, each child is known. The interaction between teacher and student is as important as the subject matter, reflected in a low student-teacher ratio and a developmentally appropriate program that intertwines social and emotional learning with academic progress. Teachers possess the expertise to develop curriculum and apply strategies that foster critical and creative thinking, problem solving, inquiry and application. Highlighting a place-based approach, Sequoyah utilizes the surrounding community as the context for teaching and learning. Education is regarded as the preparation for active citizenship while reinforcing the skills for continued scholarship. On field trips and camping trips at each grade level, students are immersed in local heritage, culture and landscape. An emphasis on social justice and the application of knowledge and skills to contemporary issues extends from kindergarten to high school. Sequoyah welcomes families who wish to play an active, partnering role with the school and whose children will thrive in a collaborative environment. The school is an intentionally diverse community whose classrooms

include a range of individual experience — race, ethnicity, sexual identity, family background and economic circumstance.

A Sequoyah education challenges the mind, nurtures the heart and celebrates human dignity.

R

eliable. Adaptable. Affordable. After more than 93 years of successfully educating the community, Glendale Community College has proven to be reliable. When COVID-19 forced educators to transition to a remote learning environment, GCC deftly made the move in one week proving the college is adaptable. Through it all, GCC has remained affordable. Whether you are looking to transfer to a four-year university, obtain valuable job skills, or are simply interested in personal enrichment, GCC is ready and able to help you reach your educational goals. The fall semester begins Aug. 31.
