HELLO FRESHERS!

Editors Jake Delaney & Sam Hogton

Your first week at the University of York promises to a calamitous rollercoaster ride – trust us, we’ve been there. The maelstrom of new faces and experiences is a lot to digest; with so much happening in such a small city it’s very easy to lose track. And so it is that we welcome you with open arms to the special freshers’ edition of Bad Taste! Bad Taste is the University of York student magazine, produced by students for students to keep you up to date with all the latest happenings on and around campus. Unlike Nouse and Vision, Bad Taste doesn’t employ staff writers – all of our content is produced by the student populace so that, for better or worse, you are always in touch with the musings of the masses. In this special ‘lite’ issue, we’ve highlighted the events you simply can’t afford to miss, and many of the lesser known gems that will hopefully make your first week at York a defining moment in your university career.

Jake Delaney & Sam Hogton If you’re interested in writing for us or getting involved with the design and lay up of the magazine, please contact us at info@badtastemagazine.co.uk, or come to our mini party on Monday 20th (week2) at Vodka Revolutions from 8pm onwards.

G I Music is provocative, ubiquitous and wicked to dance to - what’s not to love? If you have a passion for music and want to write for the next edition of Bad Taste drop me a line on e.robson@badtastemagazine.co.uk

C  . Whatever your tastes or talents, there’s a society waiting to welcome you with open arms. Visit yusu.org/clubs-and-societies for details on the current offerings.

F. Love your live music? Head to Fibbers for a healthy dose of indie, a smattering of rock, a sprinkling of electro and much more besides. The Yo-Yo indie club-night on Friday is unpretentious wonderfulness, with painfully cheap Sambuca and potential guest DJs… Or, if rock is more your thing, venture there on Saturday night. Check out fibbers.co.uk for all up-and-coming gigs and ticketweb.co.uk to buy tickets.

B B. Low ceilings and fairy lights aplenty make this venue, quite literally underneath the City Screen Cinema, charmingly atmospheric. In addition to comedy nights and performance acts, this is the place to go to see the very best of local talent. myspace.com/basementcityscreen

T D. Newly launched, this venue has two bars, two rooms and two stages. Look forward to indie, rock, pop and guilty pleasures club nights, as well as a variety of gigs. myspace.com/theduchessyork

T J. A little out of the way, but worth the adventure – The Junction is offering an increasingly awesome line-up of live music. junctionmusic.co.uk.

W’   B T 

W’ O Y P William Bowerman, drummer of Brontide and former drummer of I Was A Cub Scout, tells us his Top 3 favourite songs at the moment... 1. ‘Dear Mr. Pearson’ by Jacobs Stories.

1.

The Whip – ‘Trash’

Jacobs Stories is Stuart Lee from Brighton. Live, he plays keyboards over a mini-disc player playing string parts and almost trip-hop-style drum beats. His voice is incredible. This is my favourite song on his album Undisciplined Art.

2.

Bon Iver – ‘Creature Fear’

2. ‘Harper Lewis’ by Russian Circles.

3.

Kids In Glass Houses – ‘Lovely Bones’

4.

Sam Sparro – ‘Black & Gold’

5.

Taio Cruz – ‘Come On Girl’

6.

Tokyo Police Club – ‘Sixties Remake’

7.

The Rakes – ‘We Danced Together’

Russian Circles are an instrumental rock band from Seattle. Their debut release ‘Enter’ was stuck to my CD player for a long time, so I was worried whether or not I would like the new album as much... I do. ‘Harper Lewis’ is very heavy for Russian Circles but still has an epic ending, true Russian Circles-style. The drumming is out of this world!

8.

Eagle Eye Cherry – ‘Save Tonight’

9.

Justice – ‘D.A.N.C.E.’

What we’re all about – pretty diverse, eh?

10.

Mint Royale – ‘Singin’ in the Rain’

3. ‘Lee Tom (live)’ by The F*cking Champs. I don't know much about this band except that they have two guitarists and a drummer who sometimes sings. I heard this song maybe five or six years ago, and managed to find a live recording of it from 1999. It's instrumental and amazing. I swhould probably buy one of their albums soon…

As ever there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, whether it’s hair and make up, modelling, writing, designing, or photography. Drop us a line at fashion@ badtastemagazine.co.uk Last term we invited students to drop in to Vanbrugh College, have their photo taken, and tell us a bit about their favourite places to shop for clothes in York. All the photos from the shoot are available on the Bad Taste website: www.badtastemagazine.co.uk

‘I normally go round charity shops and sales! The best charity shops are on Goodramgate, there are loads down there. I’m from a really little town so shopping in York is great.’

‘What’s the name of that shop…? Expressions! That’s a good one. Sometimes I buy clothes there. I quite like the charity shops too.’
